Australia Day 2023 Honours List

• The Australia Day 2023 Honours List recognises 1047 outstanding and inspirational Australians. They are awarded in 3 Categories: o Order of Australia honours (General, Military Divisions); o Meritorious awards; and o Distinguished and Conspicuous awards (Military).

• Recipients announced in the list will be invested with their awards in the coming months, either by the Governor-General at Government House in Canberra, or by the State Governors or Administrator of the Northern Territory, where COVID–19 restrictions allow.

Order of Australia Honours List (General Division, including

• A total of 736 people were recognised in the Order of Australia Honours (General Division) in The Queen’s Birthday 2022 list: o 6 appointed Companion of the Order (AC) o 47 appointed Officer of the Order (AO) o 177 appointed Member of the Order (AM) o 506 awarded Medal of the Order (OAM)

• This list includes recipients being recognised (at least in part) for their contribution in support of Australia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A separate Honour Roll for COVID-19 service has been included in this package.

• Women were recognised with 354 awards (48%). This is the highest percentage of female Order of Australia recipients in an honours list

Meritorious awards: Total awards: 217 since the introduction of the Australian honours system in 1975.

• The Governor-General has prioritised ensuring the Order reflects the diversity of our community. Work is underway to increase nominations for outstanding individuals from parts of our community that have been historically underrepresented, including women, people

In addition to the 736 recipients of awards in the General Division of the Order of Australia (6 AC, 47 AO, 177 AM and 506 OAM), today’s Honours list includes:

• 30 recipients of awards in the Military Division of the Order of Australia (2 AO, 17 AM and 11 OAM)

• 217 Meritorious awards

• 64 Distinguished and Conspicuous awards from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This list also includes 77 Australians recognised for their contribution in support of Australia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These individuals will also be included in an ongoing and permanent COVID-19 Honour roll.

• Over 45.4 per cent of awards (334 in total) were for outstanding service or achievement in the community.

• The youngest recipient is 37 years old, the eldest living recipient is 102 years old.
