israel- tourism, pilgrimage, and arms sales

Raj, An Indian Christian friend from Brisbane, excitedly told me about his recent pilgrimage to Israel, where he had visited places associated with the life of Jesus Christ, like Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee. In the Bible, Israel was seen to be a "light to the nations”, which was then fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Some have always seen Israel as a noble, unique, and democratic country, birthed in 1948 by the survivors of the Holocaust, which saw six million Jews murdered by the Nazis.

GOLD COAST, a dinner function to celebrate Pushpinder Oberois’ recent Hind Rattan (Jewel of India) award, was held at Tandoori Palace restaurant in the presence of His Excellency Manpreet Vohra, who lauded Pushpinder Oberois’ contribution to the Indian Community Leadership Excellence across Australia and Cultural Diplomacy between Australia and India.

Pushpinder Oberoi responded to his accolade by saying, "Honoured and grateful. Thank you so much. Indian Non-resident Society, India, awarded Hind Rattan Award for acknowledging my contributions, life, passion, and purpose - my people, the important causes, and my wife Karla, which allowed me to contribute to the community and beyond. I thank all those who have trusted me through this journey - all those who held my hand through it and all those who watched me from their place above. I owe this to my parents."

Akashika Mohla added, "Pushpinder Ji’s passion for people and his contribution to people-to-people ties across Australia and India speak for themselves. We hope he now runs for politics and brings in his transformational energy to advance Australia and the people of Gold Coast".

Tourists like Raj bring millions of dollars to the Israeli economy. Yet, according to bestselling journalist Antony

Loewenstein who grew up in a liberal Zionist home in Melbourne, wrote in his unsettling book "The Palestine Laboratory."

"There is a dark side to Israel, with its economy historically directly linked to arms sales to some of the most oppressive regimes in the world, such as Myanmar, South Sudan and Iran (now Israel's primary enemy).

The testing of these arms and surveillance technology has also been on the Palestinians in the 'laboratories of the occupied territories of West Bank and Gaza “where Palestinians (who are not all terrorists) are harshly treated.

In fact, Lowenstein sees Israel as an oppressive military regime to be likened to the former apartheid South Africa as Israel's policies are always based on "what is best for the Jews".

Lowenstein concludes, " The future looks bleak for Israel if it continues on the road of violence against Palestinians and amoral arms sales to oppressive regimes. Israel is, therefore, not exactly the light to the nations the Bible would have it be."

Of course, Raj knows nothing about Israeli arms sales to oppressive regimes or ill-treatment of Palestinians, for, after all, he was only a pilgrim and a tourist to Israel.

But as per a report in PinkVilla, the film has been put up on hold for now. The publication has quoted a source revealing the latest update in detail. The source asserted, “Siddharth Anand has also refunded the amount he got as an advance for the film. Mythri and Siddharth Anand have now decided to collaborate on another project in the near future.”

Additionally, it was stated that the reason for the stakeholders to end their collaboration was due to the unavailability of matching dates between Siddharth Anand and Prabhas.
