GETTING POOR RESULTS? TRY THIS MAGIC MARKETING FORMULA
BY PATTY KUTTAI
P
eople go th rough a series of stages when making the decision t o b u y s o m e t h i n g (o r even to call you). If your marketing doesn’t cover each of these stages, your results will suffer. Luckily, there’s t a formula you can fol fo low that w i l l ma ke the process proc clear and simple: AIDA (attention, interest, desire, action). ( tt ti AT TENTION: Noth i ng happens u nti l you attract someone’s attention. Whether it’s a web page, brochure, flyer or email, you have about seven seconds to get their attention and engage them enough so they continue reading. In an article, blog post or web page, attention comes from your headline. With email, it’s the subject line. On a flyer, brochure or print ad, it’s the big, bold text at the top. If the headline doesn’t grab people, the entire message is wasted. You won’t have an opportunity to take people through the rest of the stages. Good headlines should speak to the problem people are struggling with or the results they desire. So, “Suffering from back pain?” is a more attention-grabbing headline than “Bob’s Chiropractic Services.” INTEREST: The next step is to engage interest. You can do this by talking about your prospects’ problem and
~AD Pages 2014_0.indd 6
2014-06-09 9:37 AM
| 7
showing empathy – letting them know you understand where they’re at. People aren’t interested in your solution until they know that you understand their problem. Next, introduce your solution. Talk about the benefits of what you have to offer. For every feature you list, imagine your prospective client or customer asking: “Why should I care? What’s in it for me?” The answers to those questions are the benefits. If you offer 24-hour tech support, that’s a feature. The benefit? “Help when you need it. Never get stuck on a computer problem when you’re working after hours on a deadline.” DESIRE: Interest shifts to desire when the person reading, watching or listening moves from “Hey, that’s kinda cool” to “I want that.” You can fan the flames of desire by talking about results. The word “imagine” can be very powerful. Invite people to imagine a future state when their problems are resolved. Paint the “after” picture. Case studies, client success stories and testimonials can be particularly helpful here. Nothing is more convincing than reading a story about someone who had the exact same problem, solved it and is now enjoying the happy results. This is why you see so many before-and-after pictures for weight-loss companies. They work.
If the headline doesn’t grab people, the entire message is wasted
ACTION: The final stage starts with asking your prospect to take the next step. Make it explicit: Call now. Fill out this form. Click this button. People tend to procrastinate. It’s easier for them to put off a decision than to make one. Use deadlines (“The price goes up at midnight”) or scarcity (“Only three left!”) to overcome this tendency. Or, nudge them into action by removing the risk. Offer a money-back guarantee or spell out your return policy. The key to successfully implementing the AIDA formula is to look at everything from your customers’ point of view: What are they struggling with? What are their desires? What interests them? What do they need to know in order to make a decision? What might be standing in the way? Then grab their attention by addressing their problem. Keep them interested by showing them what’s in it for them. Build desire by painting a clear picture of the results. Finally, ask them to take action. Follow these four steps and you’ll see better results from your marketing. Á Patty Kuttai is a marketing teacher and “coach-sultant,” and founder of HolisticMarketing.ca. Graphic design
WHO CARES WHAT I THINK? DID IT WORK?
BY MARK BUSSE
O
ver the past 20 years that I’ve worked as a graphic and communication designer I’ve frequently been asked by business owners what I think of their new identity, website or marketing campaign design. My answer rarely changes: Who cares what I think? Did it work? Typical answers include “We like it” or “It won an award!” But seldom do responses include any real, measured results, and quickly the conversation turns to how they continue to struggle with the same business challenges they’d hoped their designer would help fix. It’s moments like these when I like to ask about the strategy and process behind the design. Were realistic objectives and measurable goals established at the outset? Was their designer granted access to vital information and stakeholders and allowed to do first-hand research and provide expert input in the creation of a project brief and plan? Or did some marketing plonk write up a generic RFP that included standard demographic and ethnographic information about their audience, thinking it would help a designer make informed decisions? When discussing research and metrics, I’ve often said, “Our clients aren’t really our clients; our clients’ clients are our real clients.” (Say that three times fast!) For example, in a recent meeting with a prospect, a marketing

Graphic design Too many businesses and designers get caught up in visuals and don’t spend enough time collaborating on a smart creative brief and project plan informed by as much data as possible
manager started sharing visual styles she liked and asked what direction I thought would work best to solve their problem. My answer was: “I don’t know your business or your clients yet, so I honestly don’t know.” I explained how our process, through surveying, audit and analysis, will inform the way real data and a strategy will make visual decisions easier and more effective. Not all business executives might appreciate my frank approach, but she saw the value and immediately engaged us. Had she refused to allow us to do this initial research phase, we would have politely declined the project. Too many businesses and designers get caught up in visuals and don’t spend enough time collaborating on a smart creative brief and project plan informed by as much data as possible. Some argue that the success of communication design projects can’t always be measured. I understand this perspective, but I disagree. It’s great if a client “likes” a design solution – in fact, that in and of itself is an important outcome – but the subjective nature of visual design makes strategy, objective and audience needs more important. Ideally, you’re searching for both. Crucial to business success is hiring the right people, so, if you’re serious about solving business problems and need to hire a communication designer or firm, make sure to hire an experienced professional who is serious about results, not pretty pictures. One of the best sources to find such a professional is the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC), online at www.gdc.net and with a vibrant chapter and community in B.C. GDC-certified designers are well trained in the best practices of design research and strategy and, if you give them the access, time and support they need to understand your audience, purpose and context before starting a design project, they’ll create a solution you like and help you solve your business problem. I understand why people want my opinion about their company’s new logo, mobile app or advertisements but, in the end, if you haven’t taken the time to hire a professional designer and collaborated on creating an informed strategy, direction and rationale, don’t be surprised if your use of design for your business proves ineffective. If a project fails, it matters little whether you, I or anyone else liked the visual design. Social media
TAP THE POWER OF ONE TO PLUG INTO THE POWER OF MANY
BY MARY CHARLESON
A
t the end of 2013, in honour of Nelson Mandela’s passing, I watched The Power of One, a movie about racial injustice. The “power of one” theme seemed a fitting start for 2014, with the promise of the Internet as a marketing tool available to the masses enabling that power of one to connect with the power of many. But for many marketers there is a missing step in reaching the masses. To reach the many, they first have to reach out to one and give that one person a reason to share, thereby achieving the many. It’s a three-step process of one to one to many, rather than a two-step process of one to many. When we frame it from this perspective, it becomes about others, not about you or your business. If you can provide content that allows your readers to appear smart, connected, funny or insightful, the chances of it getting shared go up. When you’re motivating others to share your content, it becomes prudent to give them

something that makes them look good. W hile this is a subtle shift in thinking, it’s an important one in harnessing the power of one. A nother key to getti ng content spread: hav i ng something that lends itself to a great headline people will want to open, link to and share. Yet good headlines are often overlooked in social media. Writing compelling and short headlines becomes even more important on Twitter, where you’re limited to 140 characters. So, what are some ways to boost the sharing of your content? L ists. I n a n a b b re v i a te d wo rl d of s o u n d-b i te communication, lists seem to resonate. Headline: Ten ways to grow your Twitter following in 2014. How-tos. The world loves a teacher, especially if there is a willing pupil. Headline: Five sure fire ways to get publicity. Facts and stats. Generally, statistics get people excited only if they’re proving something unexpected. Graphic presentations work best. Headline: Social media metric shows huge mobile-user growth during 2013. Negative spin. In a world of “how to” advice, “how not to” can cut through the clutter. Headline: Five reasons people are not reading your blog. Research. Quote research from respected sources and all parties instantly appear smarter. Headline: Yale University study on why women CEOs fail. Case study. Nothing’s better than real-life application when it comes to learning. Headline: Social media disasters of 2013. News story. Put your own spin on a news item or break news yourself. I did this last year when online sources reported a man named Sam Sung was working for Apple in Vancouver. His business card had gone viral and, since I live locally, I was able to add my own spin to the story through my own journalistic investigation. Headline: Does Sam Sung really work for Apple? (Though he’s since left the company for Halloway Schultz, he’ll always be able to introduce himself as, “Hello. I’m Sam Sung. I was a product specialist for Apple.” What a great way to make his personal brand memorable.) So yes, framing your content from a one-to-one-tomany perspective is critical. Remember the reasons why people share and give each one you reach out to motivation to share with the power of their many, making it about them, not about you. Á

very company has a story. Some are exciting, like Virgin’s, some tug at your heart, like Toms Shoes’, and others are more utilitarian (confusing “utilitarian” for “boring” is usually a mistake). The most successful companies spend time finding their niche in our world – following market trends while looking beneath the surface of their product/ service to uncover the true value of what they offer and why consumers should care. If you’ve been in business for more than a year, then people already care about you for some reason. But what is that reason? How do you discover your company’s story? Where should you start looking? Let’s look at some useful tools. I recently worked with Alyn Edwards of Peak Communicators to lead a Fortune 500 company through a half-day session on discovering its story. This company, which makes hardware and software, is relatively unknown because it’s been content to be “the guy behind the guy.” Now it’s considering changing its approach with the realization that people want to work for companies that are exciting or accomplishing something important. Take glassware company Corning. When you think of glass, do you see windshields, windows and drinking tumblers? If so, watch Corning’s A Day Made of Glass video. If I worked for the company, I’d be showing this video off to everyone I know. continued on page 16 Ä

Branding
The complement to branding and PR storytelling is advertising, which has a distinct purpose – noise and conversion
What’s your story? From a branding viewpoint there are several questions that lead to a company’s core story: 1. Why did you start the company? You must have seen a need in the market – a cheaper version of something (Ikea), a better version of something (Virgin), a brandnew idea (Google). 2. What drives you? Building a company is difficult. We’ve all heard the “80% of businesses fail in the first year” mantra. Why take the risk? 3. Where are you going? Do you see something others don’t? Are you interested in creating a good work environment or community? Sharing your story through advertising Watching Edwards help firms discover and articulate their stories has been enlightening. Where my brandingoriented approach focuses on a company’s single, key story (see the three points above), his PR-centric method delves into any and all stories that provide further insight into a person, company, innovation, etc. The complement to branding and PR storytelling is advertising, which has a distinct purpose – noise and conversion. Grab your audience’s attention, then ask its members to do something, make a purchase, sign up, share, etc. Advertising messages can differ greatly from those of branding and PR. The story might be told in a few seconds or over multiple ads, and the truth isn’t even necessarily required. The 2013 campaign for Magnum Gold icecream bar was built on a story about two art thieves finding love by stealing a gold crown, which they value as much as the ice cream. Not realistic, but Magnum Gold seems to be doing just fine. So where do you begin with your company? Try following the order of this article. Branding is the foundation and establishes the core values that you want people to associate with your company. PR adds life, depth and authenticity. Advertising starts making noise and fighting for attention in crowded marketplaces. HOW TO COMPLY WITH THE NEW ANTI-SPAM LAW BY MARK FANCOURT-SMITH
A
ABIMAGES/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
Review your customer database and ensure people have consented to receive communication from you
new anti-spam law, CASL, is changing how some business activities, like distributing commercial electronic messages (CEM) to customers, are done. Before July 1, 2014, many companies relied on implied consent in sending CEM. CASL marks Canada’s move from an opt-out to an opt-in system. You can start ensuring compliance with the new law by understanding how it impacts your business’ e-communications, including how customers consent to receiving CEM and how they can contact you to unsubscribe. First, review your customer database to ensure people have consented to receive communication from you. Seek express consent, written or oral, from those who haven’t; keep a record of this, including the date and time consent was given. If you use a pre-checked box on your website to gain customer consent to receive CEM, this box must now be unchecked by default so consumers can actively choose to subscribe. Next, ensure your customer communication by email, text message and social media complies with CASL form and content requirements. The unsubscribe mechanism for one must be “clearly and prominently” displayed in the CEM and quick and easy to use. There are exceptions to the requirement. You can send CEM without express consent if you have a family/personal relationship with a recipient, if you are responding to an inquiry or if the recipient’s email address is openly available. CASL also allows for third-party referrals, letting companies grow their contacts without having to seek additional consents. Nevertheless, with administrative fines of up to $10 million, businesses must ensure all outgoing communications continue to comply. Remember, it’s not just the CRTC that will be able to enforce the law, but recipients of unwanted emails themselves have standing to bring an action. Dr. Paul Hasselback, Central Vancouver Island medical health officer, said parents should check children’s immunized records as part of the effort to reduce its spread and associated risk of complications. “We are conducting an investigation into the measles case in the Nanaimo area and implementing control measures,” Hasselback said. Gilfoy, a nurse, gave birth to Matteo, a boy, five weeks ago. “It’s concerning because it starts so quickly and . . . it can really spread like wildfire,” Gilfoy said. Locals react after St. Albert tops magazine’s best places list
BY VICTORIA PATERSON Staff Writer
North Island female team takes B.C. title
Being ranked the best place to live in Canada by MoneySense magazine can be good for business and St. Albert’s brand, say local leaders. “I think that we all know that we live in the best city in Canada and that’s why we do what we do and why we do it here,” said Lynda Moffat, CEO of the St. Albert and District Chamber
Winning strategy helped the North Island midget female hockey team, including five Nanaimo athletes, win this year’s B.C. Midget Female Championships. » Sports, B1

Moffat said there’s a healthy business community here that’s well-positioned to take advantage of Alberta’s booming economy. MoneySense released its annual community rankings earlier this week. St. Albert narrowly edged Calgary as the best overall city in which to live.
The rankings, especially the number one spot, does help raise awareness of St. Albert, Moffat said. “They’re a boost to the whole community. They’re especially a boost for us in attracting new business to come here,” she said. Ian Robertson, a local Remax realtor, said this kind of ranking has the potential to help attract new residents, but it’s often enthused St. Albertans spreading the word to others about St. Albert’s amenities that brings people to this community. “I think the word-of-mouth is what gets it,” he said. The majority of people relocating to this region are interested in St. Albert or nearby Sturgeon County, Robertson said. The one knock? Property tax, he said. But Robertson said the housing
prices here are lower than other popular areas like south Edmonton. St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse said continuing to do well on the annual MoneySense rankings and other polls can help build the city’s brand. “I think you continue to do these on a regular basis, it draws people in,” Crouse said. “You brand yourself as a great place to be.” Last year, St. Albert came second to Calgary. “St. Albert is kind of part of a really interesting phenomenon,” said MoneySense senior editor David Hodges. Hodges explained that smaller cities that exist on the fringes of large ones have been rising in the rankings. St. Albert is benefiting from that trend and from the rise of the West. Canadian astronaut and author Chris Hadfield was in Prince George on Saturday signing copies of his autobiographical book and giving the keynote address at the Dr. Bob Ewert Memorial Lecture and Dinner. Hundreds of people lined up at The Exploration Place to meet Hadfield, take pictures with him and get copies of An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth signed. Shari Wallace brought her seven-year-old daughter Meeya Wallace-Sparview and her friend Matiya Chouinard, 6, to meet Hadfield and be inspired.
