It’s an appropriate tagline for a large-scale gathering of supply chain organizations, experts and executives. CN’s involvement in Cargo Logistics Canada extends past our sponsorship. We’re here to meet and share insights with North America’s transportation and logistics leaders. Already a leader in the North American transportation services industry, CN is focused on supply chain innovation and collaboration. We offer integrated shipping solutions, including rail, intermodal, trucking, freight forwarding, warehousing and distribution. Whether our customers are shipping across CN’s rail network of more than 32,000 kilometers, shipping globally through the many ports we service on three coasts, or leveraging well over 20 strategically located intermodal terminals across our network, we connect them with the people that matter most: customers. CN has the only rail network that touches three coasts in North America, accessing the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. Our strategically placed intermodal terminals make 75 per cent of the U.S.

market and all Canadian markets easily accessible. CN plays a key role in fostering the prosperity of the North American markets we serve. We’re a true backbone of the economy, transporting approximately C250 billion worth of goods annually. Our top priority is running a safe operation – and the evidence is in our infrastructure. We have invested over 50 million to open two training centers in Winnipeg and Chicago, cutting both ribbons last fall. In addition to an enhanced training curriculum that promotes CN’s safety culture, the centres feature ultra-modern indoor laboratories with key railroad equipment for hands on learning. CN expects more than 3,000 employees per year to receive training in these new facilities. I hope you get the most out of Cargo Logistics Canada. This packed itinerary and impressive showing of supply chain leaders offer opportunities to inform and learn, bringing best practices home.

O
n behalf of the board of directors, as well as the entire team at Port Metro Vancouver, I extend a warm welcom e to all at tende es of th e Cargo Logistics Canada Expo & Conference, held for the second time in Vancouver. We are excited to have such a large and diverse gathering of stakeholders from across Canada’s supply chain assembled here in our spectacular port city. Port Metro Vancouver is at the heart of one of the most important economic corridors on the continent. Every year, 184 billion in goods
– or 500 million a day – travel through the port. That figure accounts for 20 per cent of Canada’s total trade in goods, and generates nearly 100,000 jobs in the nationwide supply chain – 76,800 of those right here in British Columbia. Over the past year, the scale of port activity has surpassed expectations. Once our 2014 results are finalized in coming weeks, we will likely see record volumes in several business sectors, contributing to another record year overall, and reconfirming Port Metro Vancouver as the largest export port on the continent. The movement of goods is at the heart of our business. To secure our future, we have spent the past decade enhancing critical

connections to overseas markets for export products, improving rail, port and trucking operations, and, in turn, easing congestion in our communities. Along with the leadership of the federal and provincial governments, and working together with the port and our supply-chain partners and customers, the last ten years have been a time of extraordinary progress for British Columbia’s gateway. Since 2005, an unprecedented 22 billion of public and private-sector funds have been committed in our region to support projects designed to move people and cargo faster and more efficiently, with 9 billion spent in the Vancouver gateway alone. As Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently stated to a Canadian trade delegation in Asia, these projects have been instrumental in creating “a new Silk Road” between North America and Asia through Canada’s west coast. Perhaps more importantly for you, these investments have a direct and positive impact on your ability to improve your supply chain logistics and grow your businesses. The success of the port is a collaboration of many players and thanks are due to our terminal operators, workers, customers, all levels of government and all our other partners for their continued investments,
Robin Silvester
commitment, collaboration and support. I am certain that, by working together as strategic partners, we can achieve continued supply chain excellence and fulfill the gateway’s tremendous potential. I hope you enjoy your time in Vancouver, build upon old friendships, create new connections, gain some insights relevant to your business, and take pride in knowing you are an integral part of Canada’s success in the global economy.

Wednesday January 28 • 10:30am – 12:00pm | Room 109 The field of logistics/supply chain is fast paced and greatly influenced by the economy, geopolitical disturbances, and other emerging issues. In fact, 77 of companies are blind-sided by such disruptions to their supply chains. Some business decision makers believe a stable supply chain is a matter Warren Sarafinchan Perry Lo of luck, and that times of unpredictability are simply “the cost of doing business”. But research from MIT on 209 companies across sectors showed that business’ most important metrics hinge on the expertise of people who are able to run flexible, mature supply chains – not on the less controllable issues that often get the bulk of attention. Jacquie Meyers Ginnie Venslovaitis While creating a mature supply chain has a variety of components, this session will examine how these four points Presented by are critical to success for any organization. 1. The challenges of working with teams that include many different generations. How must management and leadership adapt? 2. Cultural issues that can affect supply chains. Between language barriers, cultural customs, and national regulations, how do logistics professionals deal with the increasing globalization of the business? 3. Emerging issues. What are the hot-button issues that will be facing the sector in the next few years? 4. PD and certification. Using Schedule Reliability for Negotiations and Beyond Wednesday January 28 • 3:00pm – 4:00pm | Show Floor - Free with Exhibition Badge Port congestion, labor disruptions, and extreme winter weather have all contributed to uncertainty about carrier performance, making schedule reliability an even more important differentiator. As shippers and logistics service providers (LSPs) prepare for their 2015 contract negotiations, they will review the performance of their ocean carriers. It can be challenging to determine whether delays are James Stewart happening across the board or are affecting some carriers and routes more than others. This year, what metrics should shippers and LSPs use to gauge how their carriers performed? What criteria should they use to measure their carriers and make booking decisions? How will this impact their carrier selections in 2015? This session will provide insight about how schedule reliability is evolving and new ways to use the information throughout the year to make smarter decisions.

Culture – Coming Out Of The Dark Ages Thursday January 29 • 10:30am – 11:30am | Show Floor - Free with Exhibition Badge While many companies track their productivity and accuracy by the day, (and in some cases by the hour), the same cannot be said for safety. They continue to use the decades-old method of displaying “Days Without A Time Loss Accident” or they set their safety goals using broad timelines that often span the entire year. In addition many try to measure their safety culture through opinion based John Gilder surveys which attempt to quantify how workers feel about safety. In this seminar you will learn how to objectively measure your organizations commitment to safety on a daily basis by sampling the behavioral inputs that lead towards, or away from, a safer workplace. Attendees will leave the seminar with a series of practical tools they can implement in their workplace in short order. Speaker: John Gilder, General Manager, Canadian Material Handling & Distribution Society (CMHDS)
