Welcome to Delta! Mayor Lois E. Jackson
With our mild, sunny climate and spectacular coastal location, we have something for everyone to see and do all year round. Three urban communities make up Delta – the sunniest region in the Lower Mainland. Go back in time and discover the heritage fishing village of Ladner. Kayak the mighty Fraser River delta and be thrilled by the multitude of migrating birds at Westham Island. In North Delta, the Delta Nature Reserve is a unique opportunity to discover the sights, sounds and smells of Burns Bog – the largest raised bog in North America and a must-see for ecotourists. The boardwalk takes you through a land that time forgot with a fascinating array of plants, animals and insects. North Delta is also home to a thriving Indo-Canadian and South Asian culture which offers fantastic shopping. Visit beautiful Centennial Beach in the garden community of Tsawwassen. The warm, shallow waters and sandy shore are perfect for skim boarding, swimming, windsurfing and kite-flying. Agriculture is our primary industry – come and try the local produce, go berry picking and visit our fabulous wineries. However you choose to spend your time, we welcome you: come out and discover Delta - the natural playground. www.delta.ca

Boundary Bay is Delta’s primary waterfront attraction. It’s the perfect place for romantic walks, cycling and running, with large expanses of sand, sea and wetlands on Centennial Beach. Warm shallow waters and the park’s abundant bird life make this a wonderful spot for swimming, picnics and strolls along various nature trails. Relax by the water, have lunch at the small beach café and let the kids loose at the playground. Ladner Delta and Ladner were settled in the late 19th century by Coast Salish First Nations. Later arrivals, like brothers William and Thomas Ladner, saw sustenance in the soil where the Fraser River meets the sea. William eventually donated property to build a wharf that would help farmers ship their produce to nearby urban centres. Ladner’s Landing grew as a fishing village and service centre for the surrounding farms. Photo: Suzanne Tucker

Point Roberts Immediately south of Tsawwassen is Point Roberts, WA, one of only three areas in the U.S. that, by land, can only be accessed through Canada. Home to about 1,500 year-round residents, Point Roberts was created in 1846 when the international boundary was set, separating the area from the rest of Washington state. The border between Tsawwassen and Point Roberts is open 24-7, and a passport or an enhanced driving licence is required.
Naturally Beautiful Point Roberts is home to a large marina that offers easy access to the Gulf and San Juan islands. If arriving by boat, check out the thousand-slip Point Roberts Marina Resort. Lighthouse Park on the southwest tip offers panoramic views of Georgia Strait and, in summer, some of the best killer whale watching on the mainland. For birdwatchers, the peninsula is known for seabirds, loons, grebes, terns and jaegers. With plenty of trails, the area is also perfect for biking and boasts giant clay cliffs – an impressive sight to say the least! Photo: Monika Wieland

For the Birds
“D
elta is an amazing place for wildlife watching, and birds are especially numerous throughout the whole year. As well, in spring and summer, grey whales, orcas, and other marine mammals are often spotted offshore.” – Anne Murray
Bird’s-eye View Situated on the Pacific Flyway, Delta is a bird migration hot spot. Numerous international designations recognize its importance to the shorebirds, ducks, geese, swans and songbirds that stop to feed and rest on their long journeys. Boundary Bay, Roberts Bank and the Fraser River Estuary rank as the top Important Bird Areas in Canada: a global designation that attracts visitors from around the world. This means seeing up to 100,000 snow geese migrating from Russia in fall, or flocks of High Arctic brant wintering at Beach Grove lagoon. Hundreds of thousands of western sandpipers pass through the area during migration, while 50,000 or so dunlin spend the winter at Boundary Bay with their black-bellied plover and sanderling friends. The dikes, marshes and fields around Delta are great places to see birds of prey, including owls, hawks, harriers, falcons and bald eagles, and Boundary Bay is the best place in the country to spot wintering birds of prey. Head to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island or join guided walks led by local experts through the Birds on the Bay program. Stroll through Boundary Bay Regional Park or along the 16-kilometre (10mile) dike beside the salt marshes and mud flats. Discover the largest great blue heron colony on the Pacific Northwest coast in a wooded bluff on Tsawwassen First Nation lands beside the ferry causeway.

Getting Around
26
D
elta is surrounded by water on three sides. It was formed by silt from the Fraser River building up over hundreds of years, and is therefore a true “delta.” With the river to its north, the U.S. border and Boundary Bay south, the District of Surrey east and the Strait of Georgia west, Delta is bounded by beauty on all sides. Home to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal (the departure point for Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands), Delta is easily accessible by rail, water and major highways in all directions, and is roughly 50 minutes from Vancouver and 20 minutes from the Vancouver International Airport in Richmond. There’s also an airport for small planes near Boundary Bay in South Delta. Photo: Feng Yu
O.W.L. Society The O.W.L. (Orphaned Wildlife) Society in Delta is a nonprofit organization dedicated to public education and the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned birds. Visitors are encouraged to take a guided tour of the society’s permanent birds every Saturday and Sunday from September to the end of June. During the summer months, guided public tours are offered every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. owlcanada.ca
Wildlife Viewing Trips The Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area is a large parcel of wetland wilderness conserved as wildlife habitat; currently, the Delta Nature Reserve is the only spot from which the public may view this specialized bog ecosystem, which includes unique plants like Labrador tea and bog rosemary and diverse animals like Columbian black-tailed deer, sandhill cranes, songbirds, rare shrews and voles and several species of salamander. In addition, whale watching trips in the Georgia Strait leave from Steveston, across the river in Richmond; join one to see seals, sea lions and porpoises. Kayak tours from Ladner Harbour explore the creeks around the South Arm Marshes, where you’ll spot herons, swans, ducks, red-winged blackbirds and other feathered friends.

The flat roads, trails and dykes of Delta offer some of the best biking in the Greater Vancouver region. Here are a few suggestions on how to get your beloved biped to the area: > TransLink makes it easy to take your bike with you, with racks and space on buses, SkyTrain, SeaBus and the West Coast Express rail line. There are even bike lockers available at many convenient locations. 604.953.3333 translink.ca > The Coast Mountain Bus Company operates several bike rack-equipped bus routes in the region, with racks available on a first-come, first-served basis. 604.953.3333 | coastmountainbus.com > The George Massey Tunnel Bike Shuttle offers cyclists and their bikes transportation through the tunnel on Highway 99 south of Vancouver. Trips in both directions are available most days of the year, but call ahead to make sure. 604.575.7020 or 604.271.0337 | th.gov.bc.ca
