DOWNTOWN core
W
CELEBRATE ALL THINGS MERRY AND BRIGHT IN THE HEART OF VANCOUVER
hether gathering with friends for a cup of good cheer, perusing boutique-lined streets in search of that perfect gift or delighting in festive markets and events, immerse yourself in the heart of Vancouver –and its many merry-making districts – this holiday season.
Starting with the city’s very own Rodeo Drive, Alberni Street dazzles with shops baring some of fashion’s most iconic names. Grab a cuppa from JJ Bean Coffee Roasters and saunter through Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Prada and Tiffany & Co. for presents to please the most discerning style-seekers on your list, or support local at Vancouver-based Blubird, brimming with the season’s trendiest fashions. Craving some seasonal self-care? Check in to Chi, The Spa at the Shangri-La Hotel for some serious pampering before feasting on sustainable seafood at Coast – one of many world-class restaurants sprinkled along the street.
Next, shop till you drop on Robson Street – a three-block district boasting 150 shops, including well-loved Canadian brands Lululemon, Aritzia and Roots alongside Japanese minimalist retailers like Muji and Miniso. Sephora, for beautiful stocking stuffers, lives here, too, as does a brand-new Indigo store stocked with gifts galore. Once you’ve finished playing Santa and your list is complete, head over to Robson Square for ice skating and Starbucks for hot cocoa, or take a culture break and explore international exhibits at the Vancouver Art Gallery. A neighbourhood in which to see and be seen, enjoy an extra dose of holiday cheer in historic Yaletown, easily accessed by SkyTrain and steps from stunning wintery views along the seawall. Browse exquisite décor at The Cross Design or prep for a merry night out at Pink Lime Salon or the Glamoury – and, with the city’s major stadiums only blocks away (the sites of many a can’t-miss Christmas concert), head to one of several trendy restaurants in the area for your pre-show meal. (Also, be sure to visit during Yaletown’s free outdoor Christmas festival, CandyTown, to really get in the holiday spirit!) Speaking of spirit, it doesn’t get more romantic than a holiday meander along Gastown’s cobblestoned streets.
Flanked by twinkling light-adorned trees and stunning brick architecture, this bustling area is packed with local artists, designers and some of the city’s best eateries. After checking out perfect-for-gifting footwear at John Fluevog’s and Native Shoes’ flagships, as well as accessories at the Herschel store, join tourists surrounding the famous whistling steam clock and Gassy Jack statue or linger with the locals at Milano Coffee Roasters. Steps from the cruise-ship terminal and Waterfront Station, bustling Hastings West is home to upscale boutiques (think Palladio, Birks and Cartier for sparkling jewelry, and House of Villeroy & Boch and Roche Bobois for designer décor), crave-filling cafés (Mink Chocolate, Caffe Artigiano and Murchie’s) and plenty of public artworks. Find perfect-for-holiday-party fashions at Leone and the beautiful boutiques inside Sinclair Centre, and explore unique gift possibilities at Simon Fraser University’s bookstore – or simply saunter through the twinkling lights strewn across Lot 19. Get your dancing shoes on! From jazz and salsa to top 40 and country, Granville Street has a holiday venue to suit, with iconic concert halls like the Commodore Ballroom, Orpheum and Vogue Theatre playing host to festive shows and acts throughout the season (tip: Tom Lee Music has perfect gifts for the performers in your life). Positioned as a transit hub, all three SkyTrain lines meet up here, making Granville easily accessed from anywhere in the city. Check your list twice at Pacific Centre and Vancouver Centre malls, boasting hundreds of retailers between them, or, for a more intimate experience, stroll down the strip to trendy boutiques and funky vintage shops. The holidays mark the perfect time to connect and make memories with those we care about, whether family, friends or colleagues. This year, downtown Vancouver has a festive event for everyone, be it the Santa Claus Parade on December 2 for the little ones, the Vancouver Christmas Market bursting with German treats from November 21 to December 24 or caroling in Gastown at the annual Yule Duel on December 6. For a full list of festivities, check out our events calendar, page 36.

GRANVILLE
CELEBRATE THE BEST OF THE SEASON IN SOUTH GRANVILLE
W
hen it’s time to make merry, set your bright eyes on South Granville – stretching from the south end of Vancouver’s Granville Street Bridge to 16th Avenue – for some of the best seasonal shopping, dining and holiday experiences in the city. This charming Vancouver neighbourhood boasts a wide variety of unique gift choices that everyone on your list will truly love, including local and international offerings stocked by elegant and friendly independent retailers. Among the one-of-a-kind shops you’ll find on South Granville: Diane’s Lingerie, with gorgeous goods any gal would love to find under the tree; Lord’s Shoes & Apparel, which has long been a local favourite for fabulous footwear and fashion; and Lolë, which recently opened its first Vancouver bricks-and-mortar store, bursting with incredible activewear, right on South Granville. And the list goes on. Shopping for a fashionista? Head to Bacci’s for Dries Van Noten shoes and Chloé coats, Boboli for Stella McCartney, Missoni and elegant Italian cashmere by Loro Piani, and James Perse or Eileen Fisher for effortless separates. The street is also home to sporty TNA, boho-chic Free People and Grail (for the most-stylish sneakers). Locally owned, Hill’s Dry Goods has got pretty dresses, and it’s hard, gift-wise, to beat a coveted, iconic teddy-bear coat from Max Mara!
If your gift-giving includes items in the home category (or you’re looking to dress up your own abode for the holidays), you’re in luck. Boasting the largest concentration of décor stores in the city, South Granville is home to British Columbia’s only West Elm outpost, offering stylish, on-point furnishings and accessories, as well as Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, EQ3 and Industrial Revolution (all the only such stores in B.C., and the latter two being Canadian owned, to boot). Williams Sonoma provides high-quality cookware, while
Atkinson’s, at the street’s north end, is incredible for its curation of unique tableware, bed linens, objets d’art and gifts. Even the Indigo bookstore, situated where Broadway intersects Granville, boasts a décor section that could easily constitute a one-stop shop for spatial sprucing up this season. For the little ones on your list, there’s no shortage of children’s boutiques on South Granville. From Adore Fashions to Igloo Baby, Leuie, Lussobaby and Pottery Barn Kids, you’ll find designer duds, carefully crafted toys, furnishings, textiles and accessories to delight kiddies of every age. Brand new to the street is Bonpoint, with full newborn, girl, boy, skin-care and fragrance collections, all with the French label’s signature chic, playful esthetic. Feeling holiday peckish? South Granville caters to every Christmastime craving with everything from upscale dining to more relaxed options. West Restaurant and Vij’s Rangoli provide some of the city’s most mouthwatering meals, while foodies love the fusion-modern fare of The Rise Eatery, Stable House Bistro and Jamjar. For a caffeine boost to fuel your shopping day (and for the kind of gifts any caffeine-lover will appreciate) head to local gems like Bean Around The World, which sources and roasts its own Fair Trade java, and recently opened Small Victory, which is famous for its fresh-baked bread and outstanding coffee. Entertainment wise, be sure to stick around after shopping to catch the live, show-stopping production of Beauty And The Beast at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, presented by the Arts Club Theatre Company and running from December 1 to January 6. For more information about What’s On during the holiday season – and for a curated gift guide of recommendations – visit www.southgranville.org, and follow @southgranville for the most up-to-date highlights all season long!
