MEET ME IN ALBERTA

t seems that nothing – not even some of the worst flooding in memory – can stop Alberta’s meetings and events industry from rolling on. In fact, the resilience and can-do attitude of organizers, venue operators and hundreds of volunteers in the face of record rainfalls that triggered catastrophic flooding in June 2013 provided a great deal of inspiration during the production of this magazine. As such, this edition of Meeting Places Alberta offers a glimpse into some of the work that went into ensuring several of the province’s biggest and best events weren’t washed out. As Calgary Stampede president and chair Bob Thompson said just before opening day, “Throughout our entire history we have never cancelled a show, despite two wars and the Great Depression, and 2013 will be no exception. It certainly wasn’t. In addition, as usual, we’re pleased to present the breadth of options that exist across Alberta when it comes to booking space for your next business meeting or corporate event. This year, our writers have uncovered a number of hidden gems you may not know about, including a Banff
barbecue joint, a picturesque bird farm and a lovingly restored redbrick schoolhouse, circa 1913. But one of the best things about meeting in Alberta, in our opinion, is that you don’t necessarily need to think outside the box in order to plan a terrific event. Tried-andtrue venues like Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre, the majestic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and the 60-plus hotel properties that make up the Calgary Hotel Association make it easy to host the kind of shindig that will surely leave a lasting impression on your guests. Other features you’ll find in the following pages include a look at a growing trend of “gamification,â€? which has meeting planners adding elements from the world of gaming to drive home key messages at business events, plus a piece that provides expert tips on engaging introverted attendees. We also ask three Alberta organizers to give their best advice on what can make – or break – a meeting, based on their latest planning experience. Finally, our regional roundups offer a plethora of venue options around the province to suit every type of meeting imaginable. Ă

MPI | GREATER CALGARY: COMMUNITY PRIDE T h e 2 01 3-1 4 Meeting Profess i o n a l s I n t e rnationa l (M PI) Greater Calgary chapter board of directors stepped into leadership at a tenuous time. Having been devastated by the worst floods in our city’s history just 10 days before the Calgary Stampede was scheduled to kick off, we witnessed the local meetings and events community pull together to ensure that the show go on. Hundreds of volunteers put in thousands of hours to clean up. In the end, they delivered one of the most memorable Stampedes of all time. The effort truly showcased the strength and compassion of this city, and Meeting Professionals International is proud to be a part of this amazing and resilient community. Coming off of a tremendous year in 2012-13, during which we saw membership growth, increased
engagement from student members a nd the honou r of being ranked the No. 1 Meeting Professionals International chapter in Canada in terms of member satisfaction, we plan to carry the momentum forward into the coming year. he Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) unveiled its new Business Events Canada (BEC) division with a refreshed agenda for the meetings, conventions and incentive travel (MCIT) sector. MCIT attracts nearly 2 million visitors a year with total spending of $1.7 billion – almost a quarter of all money spent by inbound overnight travellers. Plus, Canada is No. 1 for outbound meetings business from the U.S., totalling about $1.4 billion annually. “We remain firmly committed to working with our partners and clients to bring events of all kinds to
T Canada,” says Greg Klassen, CTC senior vice-president, marketing strategy and communications. He adds, “Conventions and meetings held in Canada can be the first spark that ignites interest in doing business that leads to investment in our country as well as exploration of the unique experiences that Canada offers international travellers.”
he 2013 floods didn’t waterlog Alberta’s meetings and events industry for long. Though heavy June rains caused extensive damage across the province, most hotels, resorts and meeting venues were back in business by Canada Day. The 101st Calgary Stampede proceeded despite wet weather thanks to quick-thinking organizers, who were able to protect the substation that provides electricity to the grounds. “Throughout our entire history we have never cancelled a show, despite two wars and the Great

topics relevant to their sector. “[The] expo has become a hallmark event for both the city of Calgary and the oil and gas industry,” says Wes Scott, EVP of organizers dmg events. “The event has expanded exponentially since last held … and we are currently witnessing a 30 per cent increase in registration of attendees compared to 2011.”

The Calgary Champions initiative aims to encourage meeting and event planners to choose Calgary for their national and international conference needs. Ambassadors include leading local figures in diverse fields – from doctors to celebrities – who highlight the range of expertise available in Calgary. The program also works to shine a light on the city’s diverse meeting facilities. Similar programs are used by the Japan Tourism Agency – a

one poorly, a game at a meeting or conference can seem like something out of a nightmare summer camp. Tahira Endean, a creative director with Cantrav Services Inc., a meeting- and event-planning firm servicing Vancouver, Whistler and Banff, has seen some attempts at engaging delegates with games fall flat.
“Usually it’s, ‘You’re going to do this now, you’re going to be on this team and you’re going to wear a pinny,’” she says. “It can be very regimented.” It’s not that there’s anything wrong with using games at conferences to increase engagement, teach new concepts and get people socializing. On the contrary, Endean says, technology has recently evolved to allow attendees to engage on their own terms. And that can really work to a host’s benefit. As more planners realize the value of incorporating gaming elements into their special events, companies that produce mobile applications for such events have

embraced the idea of gamification – a psychological concept that involves building game mechanics into situations that aren’t, strictly speaking, competitive. A little competitive incentive, however, can go a long way for meeting planners who have specific objectives they want to accomplish within a limited timeframe. According to Ryan Bennett, a mobile-gaming veteran, president of Viralogix Media Inc. and owner of Stunt Buxx Viral Media Marketplace, every business owner wants “to engage customers and get them to do what you want them to do.” As such, he says, “Games can increase excitement, participation and loyalty.”

Game on
Technology has evolved to allow attendees to engage at an event on their own terms – and that can really work to a host’s benefit
The games themselves can take on a number of forms. Patrick Payne, CEO of Vancouver-based Quickmobile, which produces mobile apps for events, conferences and trade shows, says, “We ask what they’re trying to achieve at their event, and we’ll create a game that will achieve or accomplish whatever that objective is.” That can mean different things to different event planners. For example, a gaming solution for a company that wants to ensure delegates show up at an opening-night gala (rather than veg out in their hotel rooms) could be a leader board within an event app that awards points for attendance. Another firm that’s had issues around workshop tardiness may include a QR code outside each session room that can be scanned before the scheduled start time to bump an attendee up in the standings. And for event planners who want to encourage out-of-town guests to enjoy the city during down time, Endean suggests an Amazing Race-style social media challenge. She points to Event Camp Vancouver, a 2011 meeting of planning professionals. Organizers, who wished to highlight the city’s eco-conscious vibe and cut down on waste, made a game out of it. Using the event app, attendees were able to check in to record individual “acts of green.” “We wanted to show that it’s really easy to run a sustainable meeting,” Endean explains. “[Attendees] say, ‘Hey, that wasn’t so hard. I can go back to the office and do that.’” Taken collectively, these types of tasks constitute a
PATRICK PAYNE |
game that challenges attendees to step out of their comfort zones. They produce content and can turn the event into a local trend. Attendees who are already familiar with gamification apps like Foursquare and MapMyRun will likely take to these challenges like fish to water. Others, however, may remain aloof. But that, says Endean, is part of the point. “It’s a different way of approaching [engagement] and it can take some getting used to for clients,” she says. “They might think, ‘Oh, what if they don’t do it?’ A lot of people will just go on and see what it’s all about, and that’s OK, too. They’re learning how they want to learn.” Attendees may be a tough sell, but some clients need an even harder pitch. Even proponents like Bennett admit the concept of gamification carries a lot of baggage. Potential clients can be turned off if they think of it as a buzzwordy add-on. “It blows people’s hair back, their eyes dilate,” he says of the G-word. “People either know the concept intimately or they think it’s just incorporating some silly game elements. It’s much more than that.” Endean, however, has seen proof that gamification works – particularly at the end of an event. “If you see someone on the leader board who you don’t know but is close to you in the standings, by the time you get to that closing reception, you’re going to find that person and meet them,” she says. “It leads to different kinds of connections.” Á

ENGAGING THE INTROVERT Expert advice on how to crack the strong, silent types LORNE MALLIN
| NEWS@BIV.COM
J Jocelyn Flanagan, president and CEO of e=mc2 Event Management, says “it’s important to give [introverts] something engaging to see, feel, hear or touch – which also gives them something to talk about with the next person who stands or sits nearby”
When Burnaby psychologist Lorne Prupas runs workshops, he tries to set his introverted guests at ease as soon as they enter the venue
ocelyn Flanagan knows how to create an atmosphere that draws introverts out of their shells at meetings and conferences. She calls them “engagement pockets,” and describes them as areas where guests can comfortably mill around, relax on lounge furniture, have a snack and chat with their peers. The president and CEO of Calgarybased e=mc2 Event Management Inc. also ensures that there’s always something to see or hear – either on a stage or on a screen – in order to prevent attendees from sitting and staring blankly into space or their mobile device. “It’s important to give them something engaging to see, feel, hear or touch – which also gives them something to talk about with the next person who stands or sits nearby,” she explains. While social media platforms and smartphone apps are relevant and necessary, Flanagan says that nontech tools like create-your-own name badges that reveal something about each delegate’s personality can make great conversation starters. She has even set up video speakers’ corners and comment walls – graffiti

walls, digital smartboards or simple sticky notes – to engage participants at an event. When Burnaby, British Columbia, psychologist Lorne Prupas runs workshops, he tries to set his guests at ease as soon as they enter the venue by introducing himself to each and every attendee personally and doing his best to engage particularly introverted participants right at the door. After that, designated “reflection periods” are executed throughout the session to allow delegates to do some work in writing before sharing their thoughts with the rest of the group. “Having the answers in writing … gives them added courage to offer their contributions to group discussions,” Prupas says. “The act of making a verbal contribution, particularly for the introverted, is an act of courage. Verbal contributions should be acknowledged and something positive about the contribution should be made. This will make it safer for others to contribute.” A bit of humour, he adds, can also work wonders. “People are grateful when we make them laugh,” Prupas explains. “In return they tend to be more generous
of spirit and contribute more to the workshop – even the introverted.” Vancouver-based economic consultant Roslyn Kunin – a self-proclaimed introvert with decades of experience leading and attending events – admits that she often goes into “mother mode” at meetings in order to ensure that “no one is hogging” the conversation. She says that she also tries to make note of “anyone who hasn’t said anything,” and then make a point of asking those people for their opinion. With networking at the heart of most business functions, Kunin says that the challenge for introverts is to say, “OK, the most fun thing that I can think of is definitely not networking – how can I do it?” Her best tried-and-true advice for the shy is as follows: seek out all the people you know and say hello, and be sure to introduce yourself to anyone who appears as or more introverted than you are. Finally, as a host or planner, be sure to collect and review participant evaluations at the end of each event. This, according to Prupas, can help you to determine what can be done differently in the future in order to better engage the “hard to engage.” Á

When floodwaters hit Calgary last June, Arnold and other Global Petroleum Show (GPS) organizers scrambled to ensure the massive conference and trade show at Calgary Stampede Park would be ready to welcome 680 exhibitors and 24,000 registered attendees from 60 different countries. “Many exhibits in Hall F were under water,” she recalls. “Luckily, overnight, we were able to secure an HVAC company, and all hands were on deck to clean up for the following morning.” The experience underscores the importance of having planning and events staff with the smarts to react quickly when the original plan is a washout. “[We] tend to be anal with respect to planning processes because we need to be,” explains Arnold. “When things change rapidly, we must have a plan B or C.” Further, she says, “Always anticipate problems or changes before they occur. Go through every possible scenario in your mind.” The three-day GPS – the largest such event in Canada – generates an estimated $69.4 million in direct economic impact in Calgary and $8.9 billion in business

transactions. The next show will be held in Calgary in June 2014. “Planning GPS is a year-round venture, but we arrive at Stampede Park 10 days prior to mark out the outdoor areas and prepare for the heavy equipment to move in,” she says, adding that dmg also harnesses social media to reach its worldwide audience. “The true buzz begins with the launch of our GPS app, which is about six weeks before the event,” Arnold explains. “We consistently communicate in all of our marketing materials our Twitter handle to spread the word about the show.” As for lessons learned, keeping the people who come to events in mind is key. “Often we’re focused so much on sales and revenue that we forget if we didn’t have the attendee, there would not be an event at all,” she says. “You can sell out a show but, if the experience for the attendee is not a good one, they won’t come back. The attendee is the most important customer an event has.”
MARK STEPHENSON, VP, INFORMA CANADA EVENT | Real Estate Forum TOP TIP | Content is king When your company produces 20 real estate conferences and forums across Canada each year, not to mention dozens of other events and large trade shows, content truly becomes king. Stephenson, who helps Informa Canada produce its highly respected Real Estate Forums at venues like the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton and Telus Convention Centre in Calgary, says these events typically attract between 1,200 and 2,600 delegates. “The most important thing is ensuring we have the most compelling content with the right speakers addressing that content,” he says, noting that the “very fluid” nature of the real estate industry means issues can surface quickly. As such, Informa starts lining up speakers for its events six months in advance, taking care to secure experts who can be objective. As Stephenson explains, “You have to remove the sales pitches.” Planners, too, should never expect to receive big hotel discounts, regardless of how many rooms they book or how long they have been at it. After all, he says, “You’re only as good as your last show.” Despite the fact that “organizers must remain aware that they’re working toward a fixed deadline that cannot be changed,” Stephenson, who is now working with Port Metro Vancouver on a new conference and trade show called Cargo Logistics Canada, says, “The most important thing is to enjoy what you’re doing and to have fun doing it.”

LEE MALLEAU, VP, BUSINESS AND TRADE DEVELOPMENT, CALGARY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT EVENT | CanadaChina City Economic Cooperation Forum TOP TIP | Down to the details Despite helping to organize as many as 50 business events each year, the first Canada-China City Economic Cooperation Forum, held in partnership with the Consider Canada City Alliance, was a challenge even for a seasoned event planner like Malleau. The one-day seminar, held in July 2013 at Calgary’s Hyatt Regency Hotel, was the largest gathering of Chinese and Canadian business leaders of its kind to date, drawing 150 delegates, including government officials and senior business representatives from both countries. Due to billions of dollars invested in Canada by companies in China and the Asia Pacific over the past several years, it was crucial that the seminar go smoothly. According to Malleau, the arrangement of simultaneous translation services and the changing of dinner venues to a larger space proved the importance of “getting every detail right,” and scheduling weekly conference calls with organizers and speakers to fine-tune the event was key. She adds that, when it comes to meetings between delegates from different part of the world, things like body language and cultural etiquette become critically important. At the same time, Malleau says, “Never underestimate the power of humour to open dialogue and present a message.” Á

BUILD Alberta’s range of team-building programs has something to offer everyone CURT CHEREWAYKO

H
osted in boardrooms, on mountainsides and even in the kitchen, team-building programs offered throughout Alberta are
as diverse as their settings. The objectives of these activities range widely, too. While some help shape business leaders, others aim to teach co-workers to communicate more effectively or develop their problem-solving skills. Some, believe it or not, are simply designed to get staff out of the office for a day and boost their spirits.
Power play “We’re such a ‘put your nose to the grindstone’ kind of province,” says Robert Manolson. “We have a ‘work first’ attitude.” This observation is, in part, what drives the founder of Powerful Play Experiences in Edmonton to help businesses and organizations “embrace the value of fun at work.” His team-building workshops, which include high-energy, co-operative activities largely shaped around the use of props and games, take place right in the office, sparing staff the time and trouble of having to travel off-site for the day.
ROBERT MANOLSON |
For Manolson, the success of a team-building workworrkshop can be measured by participants’ icipants’ reaction reactions, n s,, which often include clapping, cheering, laughing laughin ng and dancing. However, when it comes to chalchaa llenging teams to work together more effectively, effectively ly, he takes his work seriously. “People go back to the workplace place and they the hey ns – they imim mfall back into their old patterns he way,” he he mediately let work get in the says. “Staff need to see team-building uilding as a human-resources process that’ss built into in nto the work culture 24-7. Team-building building g needs nurturing and ongoing attention tention throughout the year.” Sink or swim Bill Nutter and two partners launched aunched Deltaa SynS nSyn ergy Group two decades ago to provide experiential rovide experienti tiall nd team-building team-buildin ng and learning-based training and

Zest Corporate Adventures’ “Titanium Chef” program challenges teams to show off their collective culinary prowess
response to clients who wanted lighter, less-intense programs. Today, Zest’s most popular team-building activities are inspired by reality television, with a “Titanium Chef” exercise that tests teams’ collective culinary prowess in the kitchen and an “Amazing Race” course peppered with physical and cognitive hurdles.
Inside Out Experience offers programs that teach team survival skills that can be applied in the workplace to make co-workers collaborate more effectively
for groups that require more fundamental or comprehensive changes. “We start a conversation around who the client is, what their industry is and what their particular learning objectives are,” says Nutter, explaining that this can lead to the creation of a tailored program that includes improvisation, role-playing, leadership-building and team problem-solving exercises. In one activity, a team member guides a blindfolded coworker through the necessary steps to build an object out of Lego. To add a layer of complexity, some of the blocks are discreetly removed from the set beforehand, challenging both teammates to solve the dilemma together. The company also offers outdoor activities involving ropes courses and water-based activities like canoe races or building a seaworthy raft. “It’s not just the experience,” he says. “It’s learning from the experience and being able to apply it back to the workplace.” In 2006, Delta created Zest Corporate Adventures in

Great outdoors According to Andrew Pratt, water-based activities are among the best to help navigate the complexities of the workplace. In fact, the owner of Inside Out Experience in Bragg Creek has written a book about it. Rafting in the Workplace, co-authored by Pratt and two colleagues, is a collection of analogies on how success in the workplace and success on the rapids are alike. As expected, Inside Out’s team-building programs include a rafting exercise that sees teams work their way through a river obstacle course dotted with a number of problem-solving activities. The company also offers various programs on dry land, including a GPS-based scavenger hunt. The Delta Lodge at Kananaskis has a similar scavenger hunt, which can be tailored to suit each client, as well as a slew of other outdoor team-building offerings. Erin Sokoloski, spa and guest activities manager at the lodge, says, “The main focus for us is to get teams outside enjoying what the area has to offer and to get them to learn about the area, its history and its wildlife.” Finally, for outdoor activities high above the ground, Yamnuska Mountain Adventures offers hikes, easy rock climbs and games aimed at heightening participants’ risk-management, decision-making and general team skills. The Canmore company also manages a ropes course featuring a series of obstacles and challenges that “becomes even more fun and challenging when you ‘cross paths’ with other participants on a section.” Á

How to use Meeting Places’ region-by-region directories of venues and services
Meeting Places at a Glance
Regional Directories
Company Index
If you’re looking for details of specific venues, start below. First check the Alberta map on page 19 to confirm what region your event is in, then browse the listings under that region.
Refer to the Alberta map on page 19 for the page numbers of individual regional directories. The introductory pages will update you on the latest news: new conference or convention facilities that have come online in the past year or significant meeting-venue renovations. The directories that ensue list the services available in each of the region’s towns and cities.
If you already know the company you want for the job, simply turn to the company index at the back of the regional directories. You’ll find an alphabetized listing of every company, referring you to the page that includes a description of the company and contact information.

Welcome to the meeting planners’ resource section of Meeting Places, including directories of all the resources you’ll need for planning meetings, conferences, conventions and trade shows throughout Alberta. Start by using the colour-coded map of Alberta on page 19 to identify the region of your intended event. Then use the two main sections of the Meeting Places resource guide, “Meeting Places at a Glance,” which offers details of meeting venues in each region, and regional directories, which guide you to all the services you’ll need wherever you are holding your event.

AFTER THE FLOOD Torrential downpours could not dampen Calgary’s meeting and event industry
CURT CHEREWAYKO
| NEWS@BIV.COM
F
or many Calgarians the 2013 flood was a hugely disruptive event. Now that much of the damage has been repaired, it’s back to business in Cowtown. Even the city’s signature event didn’t succumb to the disaster. Thanks to event staff and volunteers, the 2013 Calgary Stampede was a hit. Calgary’s can-do attitude is reflected in a marketing initiative launched by Meetings & Conventions Calgary (MCC) back in March 2013, several months prior to the flood. Featuring prominent Calgarians, including University of Calgary president Elizabeth Cannon and Dragons’ Den dealmaker W. Brett Wilson, the campaign serves as testament to the strong work ethic that makes this city tick. MCC also kicked off its “Calgary Champions” program last May, selecting leaders in various fields to act as ambassadors in promoting the city abroad. The aim, according to MCC director of marketing and communications Heather Lundy, is to draw more national and international events and meetings to town, as “many international groups will only consider a destination if they have a local support ambassador.” Among the biggest supporters of MCC’s efforts is the Calgary Hotel Association (CHA). Executive director Jon Jackson describes his city as “very vibrant,” with “a very safe and walkable downtown,” and calls the local restaurant scene “one of the best if not the best in Canada.” That’s not all. With so many “pre- and post-event activities you can do within the city or within a short drive away in places like Banff, Kananaskis and Fort Macleod,” Jackson says Calgary is a truly special place to hold business meetings and conventions. An abundance of accommodation doesn’t hurt, either. The CHA’s 61 member hotel properties – located in four primary quadrants across the city: downtown, south, northeast and northwest – boast a combined total of 10,500-plus rooms to meet the needs of a wide range of visitors. CHA members are working hard to do just that. The Delta Calgary South Hotel, for instance, recently opened a new lounge that offers concierge service and complimentary goodies like breakfast, evening appetizers and all-day café service. Rooms in the hotel have also been renovated to include fully wired “smart desks,” which provide connectivity to the web and to each suite’s flat-panel TV. The chain’s “Meeting Maestro” concept provides event planners with the ultimate flexibility in scheduling events. “Meeting planners want to access someone right away; they don’t want to be hunting around for help,” says Grant Erickson, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. “We

are positioning ourselves as the best destination for meetings of 20 to 50 people.” Another CHA property in the city’s south is the Deerfoot Inn & Casino, offering approximately 20,000 square feet of meeting space divided into 14 versatile rooms – enough room for up to 500 guests. The inn also provides premium catering options, including a traditional grill, a South Pacific-themed bar, a sushi bar and a Friday-night buffet, and free shuttle service to its sister property – 2013 Calgary White Hat Award Accommodation of the Year finalist Service Plus Inns & Suites, with meeting space for 50. With a pool, whirlpool, fitness facilities, 24-hour Denny’s Restaurant, Moxie’s Grill and Shark Club sports bar, as well as excellent meeting and banquet facilities, the Sandman Hotel & Suites Calgary South can host 320 delegates. larger events, the Glenmore Inn & Convention Centre – also a CHA member – has more than 15,000 square feet of adaptable function space that can accommodate business gatherings with as many as 1,400 attendees. The boutique Hotel Blackfoot features a unique combination of modern luxury accented by an Old West vibe. With 21,000-plus square feet of event space, up to 350 guests can meet here. Beyond its healthy hotel stock, Calgary offers a variety of venues to suit varied needs. The Telus Convention Centre, for one, can hold 4,000 people and boasts direct connections to three four-star hotels with a total of 1,100 suites. The centre’s also upped its green efforts in recent years, installing solar panels that generate enough energy to support two average households for a year. Not only does the new WestJet Campus venue on Aerial Place NE include meeting rooms small (16 guests) and large (900), each of its three conference centres contains projector screens with full audiovisual capability and wireless connectivity. Another unique venue can be found in Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame – a Calgary facility that offers attendees a glimpse into the country’s sports history. With six meeting rooms and 50 hands-on interactive exhibits (including sport challenges, touchscreen sports lessons and 3-D simulations) the hall makes for a memorable meeting space. Ă
Unique. Creative. Inspiring.

CAPITAL CITY New and renovated venues in Edmonton up the ante when it comes to state-of-the-art meeting space
CURT CHEREWAYKO
| NEWS@BIV.COM
E
dmonton’s meeting and events sector is getting treated to a major makeover, with millions of dollars being poured into renovations, expansions and new builds by hoteliers, property managers and government, reflecting a confident bet that Alberta’s capital will continue to be a key destination for corporate rendezvous for years to come. The city’s international airport recently completed a glittering $670 million expansion that includes a new U.S. departures area, additional retailers and improved checkin gates. A second pay-for-use Plaza Premium Lounge offering free Wi-Fi and refreshments means more space for business travellers to rest their feet – and check their meeting agendas – in YEG. Local accommodation is also being revamped, including the 213-suite Renaissance Edmonton Airport Hotel. With 20,000 square feet of varied meeting space – the largest of which can host banquets for 564 attendees – the property plans to hire a number of “navigators” dedicated to guiding guests toward hot spots for food and entertainment. The 41-year-old Mayfield Inn and Suites, too, is being updated ahead of its relaunch as the DoubleTree by Hilton West Edmonton in early 2014. The property boasts ballroom space to host 900 attendees and, on completion, will include a state-of-the-art conference centre with seven stunning meeting spaces that developer SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts is billing as distraction free, ergonomically advanced and fully wired. Best of all, the facilities can be leased via a number of all-inclusive packages that include access to the centre’s Connections Cafe, which offers a full menu of fresh food all day. For meeting planners, that means not having to schedule meals for attendees. SilverBirch has been particularly busy in Edmonton, recently completing construction of a conference centre at its Radisson Edmonton South Hotel and making plans for its Home2 Suites by Hilton project, which will include extended-stay amenities that will be particularly appealing to business travellers. Meantime, updates to the Delta Edmonton South Hotel & Conference Centre have introduced fully wired “smart desks” to each guest suite. Part of the hotelier’s ModeRoom concept, these provide business travellers with connectivity to the web and to the flat-panel TV in their room. Also worth noting is Delta’s recent renovation of its 30,000 square-foot conference centre.

Situated in downtown Edmonton, the Union Bank Inn is a one-of-a-kind venue housed in the former – and historic – Union Bank of Canada Building. This stunning venue offers three unique banquet facilities able to accommodate numerous types of events and up to 130 guests. From the grand Giverny Ballroom to the distinguished Vintage Room, this city inn boasts full audiovisual capabilities, complimentary Internet access, a catering team and architectural interest to boot. Also at Edmonton’s core, the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald offers convention facilities for 10 to 350 delegates. Featuring 10,000 square feet of space, from stylish boardrooms to magnificent ballrooms, this elegant venue boasts state-ofthe-art and on-the-spot office amenities, plus a full-time events team to plan every detail, every step of the way. Among Edmonton’s many other incredible meeting and conference venues: the enormous EXPO Centre, with more than 500,000 square feet of space; the busy Shaw Conference Centre, which puts on hundreds of events each year; and the sophisticated Oasis Centre in close proximity to West Edmonton Mall. Ă
The Renaissance Edmonton Airport Hotel is connected directly to YEG by a heated skybridge

Alberta Rockies
MEETINGS MAGNET Raw beauty, a range of recreational activities and world-class event space make an alluring draw LORNE MALLIN
| NEWS@BIV.COM
N
o wonder Alberta’s majestic Rocky Mountains attract visitors from around the world – this is where sheer natural beauty combines with world-class facilities and recreational resources to create event magic. Less than two hours by car from the Calgary International Airport, Banff National Park could be called the region’s crown jewel, with a mindblowing 25 meeting and convention properties that welcome virtually any size group (up to a whopping 2,000 guests) with any type of need. One venue that simply cannot be overlooked is the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, boasting more than 76,000 square feet of event and exhibit space. In 2013, seven meeting rooms in the hotel were given makeovers, deepening the hotel’s draw. Nearby, the Banff Park Lodge conference centre has 19 meeting rooms, the largest of which can accommodate 500 people. With 60 meeting rooms, the Banff Centre is billed as the largest arts and creativity incubator on the planet. The Kinnear Centre for Creativity & Innovation opened its doors a few summers ago to show off its 17 meeting rooms of various sizes and flexibility. Baker Creek Mountain Resort features cosy log chalets and suites to stay in, plus an executive conference centre that’s ideal for small group meetings (up to 30 delegates) and special events. Brewster’s MountView Barbecue, 10 minutes from downtown Banff, is another one-of-a-kind corporate event and reception facility that gives guests a dose of Alberta’s country-western pride. Catering to groups of 50 or more year-round, the venue serves up hearty, buffetstyle meals of its famous barbecue hip of beef. After a two-year renewal project, Parks Canada’s Cave and Basin National Historic Site opened in the summer of 2013. Besides the naturally occurring warm mineral springs that pool in an underground cavern and an outdoor emerald-coloured basin, the site now features catering and special events facilities and a 40-seat theatre. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise recently renovated some of its event space, too, and still features unprecedented access to the turquoise gem that is its namesake. Less than 300 kilometres north of Banff is Jasper National Park, one of the world’s largest protected natural areas. Here, the famed Columbia Icefield – an ancient remnant of the icy mass that once covered most of the mountains in Western Canada – and the world’s biggest Dark Sky Preserve help elevate the enjoyment of any conference or meeting.

The 446-room Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge provides 18 meeting spaces, while the Sawridge hotel and conference centre can accommodate up to 250 delegates. For a more intimate Jasper setting, the Pyramid Lake Resort has one meeting space to suit 80 guests. Closer to Calgary, on the eastern slopes of the mountains, Kananaskis Country and the alpine town of Canmore include a number of facilities to host conferences, meetings and other corporate events. The largest capacity facility in the area is the Delta Lodge at Kananaskis, with 21 meeting rooms covering 22,000 square feet of space. In Canmore, the Radisson Hotel and Conference Centre has 10 meeting spaces for up to 800 people. On a smaller scale, the town’s Civic Centre includes an atrium that can seat 100 for special events. Best of all, local tour operators can easily arrange unique team-building experiences thanks to excellent recreational infrastructure like Nakiska Mountain Resort and the Silvertip Resort golf course. rom sweeping grasslands to some of the biggest – and quirkiest – roadside attractions in Western Canada (giant perogy, anyone?), Central Alberta really does have it all – including a range of options for your next meeting or conference. Located just over an hour from both the Edmonton and Calgary airports, Red Deer is Alberta’s “happy medium,” boasting some of the region’s most state-of-the-art event facilities. Take Westerner Park, for one. With 1.5 million visitors a year this multi-use facility spread over 300-plus acres is a hub for meetings,

An easy drive from Edmonton and Fort McMurray, Lac La Biche is a growing tourism area ready for your next meeting. Abundant lakes, forest and wildlife make the area ideal for groups seeking outdoor recreation
The Forest Interpretive Centre in Whitecourt has three separate meeting spaces and can seat up to 76
with space to host as many as 700 guests, as well as onsite catering and professional audiovisual assistance. If you’re looking for luxury, the Sheraton Red Deer Hotel is a best bet for top-of-the-line amenities, featuring plush meeting spaces that can handle up to 2,000 attendees. On the other end of the spectrum, Ellis Bird Farm just south of Lacombe offers space for small events as well as an opportunity to take a group tour and learn more about the staff’s efforts to conserve and propagate mountain bluebirds and tree swallows. Alberta’s self-branded “Snowmobile Capital,” Whitecourt, is situated approximately 170 miles northwest of
Edmonton. Here, the Forest Interpretive Centre has three separate meeting spaces and can seat up to 76. For guests who are feeling lucky, the nearby Eagle River Casino & Travel Plaza, run by the Alexis First Nation, can accommodate between 50 and 80 people. A little over 190 kilometres west of Edmonton on the Yellowhead Highway, Edson has many amenities, including ace meeting space at the Best Western High Road Inn and the 500-capacity Edson Recreation Complex. Additionally, the Red Brick Arts Centre – a former (circa 1913) schoolhouse – has been lovingly restored and renovated as a 30-seat theatre. Situated along Highway 40, Grande Cache is an offthe-beaten-track gem, where the local Best Western makes an affordable option for accommodation and has a business centre that can host up to 70. If you wish to hold your meeting greenside, try the Grand Cache Golf and Country Club. Back in 2003, Lloydminster, straddling the AlbertaSaskatchewan border, erected four 100-foot-high survey markers along the boundary. Billed as the tallest border markers in the world, these structures help ensure delegates don’t miss the turnoff for the city, where meetingfriendly facilities include the 13,000-plus-square-foot Stockade Convention Centre and a dozen hotels with special event space. hile Southern Alberta represents a large portion of Canada’s economic future, the region’s breathtaking topography of mountains, canyons, lakes and prairies lets visitors literally touch the dawn of time. Dinosaur Provincial Park is situated a short drive south of the bustling oil-fired city of Calgary, near the town of Brooks. One of three UNESCO World Heritage sites in the area, the park lets visitors look at one of the largest concentrations of complete dinosaur skeletons on earth.
In fact, tourists to this attraction often unearth ancient fossils themselves. You can’t take the small bones home with you, but you can handle them before a paleontologist retrieves them for possible display in the exhibit gallery. Tour groups, welcome at Dinosaur Provincial Park, can book into as many as seven spacious, safari-like tents, each appointed with a queen bed, electric fireplace and compact kitchen. Combined with guided treks into protected areas of the park, this site makes a unique venue for a corporate getaway. Brooks offers more-conventional meeting space at its Heritage Inn Hotel & Convention Centre, with facilities that can seat up to 600. Like many hotels in Alberta’s south, guests at the inn can ask about discounted – or

even free – golf with their room booking, usually between the months of July and September. More-recent history looms in Lethbridge, Alberta’s third-largest city and a crossroads for the agriculture and oil industry two hours south of Calgary. Completed in 1909, the High Level Bridge over the Oldman River remains the largest such railway structure of its kind in the world and is worth a visit. Nearby, the 60-year-old Coast Lethbridge Hotel & Conference Centre includes a 9,000-square-foot banquet ballroom and a series of meeting rooms that can hold up to 800 guests. Daytime excursions in and around Lethbridge are numerous and varied. The serene Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden offers tours that can be customized to meet a group’s needs, while the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation, which rescues raptors, welcomes larger groups with guided tours that can include a private flying demonstration and photo opportunities with the birds. Finally, the Rocky Mountain Turf Club features fine thoroughbred horse racing and plays host to many large events in its five meeting rooms, the largest of which covers 10,466 square feet. Suitable for business seminars, workshops and trade fairs, some rooms offer views of the track. Moving along to Medicine Hat, where plans are nearing completion on a $64 million replacement for the 4,000seat Medicine Hat Arena that could host crowds of up to 7,000. In the meantime, the city’s Exhibition & Stampede grounds can accommodate 1,700 guests and boasts 10 separate meeting rooms. Of hotel-style venues in the Hat, the Medicine Hat Lodge is the largest in the city, with a grand ballroom for 600 guests, nine meeting rooms, a casino and a water park. Nearby, the beautiful Elkwater Lake Lodge & Resort in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park provides easy access to a golf course and six pristine lakes and offers 31 suites and six cabins and meeting rooms for as many as 225 conference delegates. hile Calgary and Edmonton headquarter much of Alberta’s resource sector, a need to gather and conduct business in the province’s north persists. Fortunately, this vast region filled with rushing rivers, pristine lakes and wide-open skies makes a terrific place for industry players – and others – to meet. Fort McMurray has been a town of dreams for more than a quarter-century, and the past decade in particular has seen demand for hotel space skyrocket as investment dollars continue to pour in. Local properties like the Radisson and Quality hotels provide excellent meeting rooms and business amenities, while smaller operators like Platinum Hotels offer boutique conference facilities with space for up to 650. For even more meeting space, Fort McMurray’s MacDonald Island Park and Suncor Community Leisure Centre regularly host trade shows and exhibitions that welcome throngs of visitors. The centre’s curling arena alone has banquet seating to suit more than 1,000 people. One nearby community that’s experienced similar development is Athabasca, which serves both as a northern outpost for Edmonton and the first major stop south of Fort McMurray. Here, the Athabasca Regional Multiplex has meeting room for groups as large as 1,000, while smaller spaces exist at the Days Inn and other hotels. The town’s midway position has also seen adventure tourism flourish, opening up trail networks for snowmobiling and skiing and waterways for boating and fishing. The Alberta Junior Forest Wardens Association’s Long Lake Outdoor Education Centre is available for groups seeking rustic surroundings, while the Winefred Lake Lodge, situated close to Conklin, has room for up to 50 guests and can co-ordinate a variety of backcountry outings. To the northwest, Grande Prairie – considered the hub of Peace River Country – is bustling thanks to the growth of next-door-neighbour British Columbia’s gas sector. Accommodations here have grown in tandem with the exploration activity and include the Pomeroy Hotel & Conference Centre (with 11,000 square feet of event space and room for up to 500 delegates) and a 132-room Motel 6. Non-hotel venues in Grande Prairie include the Eastlink Centre, one of Canada’s largest multiplex recreation facilities, and Centre 2000, with a boardroom, theatre and main foyer, as well as a cupola at the top of the building, which can host an intimate gathering of eight. Evergreen Park, also in town, provides extensive exhibition, entertainment and agricultural facilities with spaces of various sizes and

suited to various uses, from an enormous stadium to a unique log cabin. Last but not least, Grande Prairie Regional College features unique architecture and several halls and theatres to accommodate corporate gatherings. The smaller community of Peace River has, happily, retained some of the character of its rural past. With just 500 rooms at local hotels and motels, the town prides itself on its proximity to its namesake river – ideal for canoeing and fishing – as well as numerous golf courses and trails. Civilization drops away north of Peace River, and wilderness takes over. The vast expanse of land and sky is stunning, with Route 35 – the Mackenzie Highway, which runs to Hay River and, ultimately, Yellowknife – interrupted only by a handful of small farming towns. High Level is the region’s hub and the last major community in Alberta before entering the Northwest Territories. While older lodgings like the Flamingo Inn continue to play up the town’s frontier vibe, a wave of investment
