Kootenays, these communities are a blend of worldly cultures that make for a big city feeling, with the quaint charm of a small community. You’ll quickly fall in love with these peaceful yet sophisticated, welcoming towns and soon understand why so many choose the area as their home. From shimmering shores filled with outdoor adventure, to award-winning cuisine, this number one Canadian small arts town is practically paradise… Delve into the following pages to see why!

Baker Street, Nelson You only have to stroll down this historic street once to realize why it draws so many visitors. Whether spring, summer or fall, this bustling area always has something exciting happening, like music buskers and great shops offering everything from handmade soaps and clothing to locally made, high-end fashion. Winter brings a beautiful scene with delicate snow blanketing the city and twinkling lights creating a warm glow. It’s the perfect time to take a break from the slopes and head to one of the top-notch restaurants found here. Baker Street is famous for its amazing food and shopping, as well as the many local cafés housed in antique heritage buildings and designed for people watching, while sipping organic, fairly traded brews. This town takes its coffee—and laidback lifestyle!— seriously! discovernelson.com (Map 3, 4) Photo: Tourism BC / David Gluns

1896:
Evidence reveals the Sinixt and Ktunaxa Nations have lived harmoniously on these lands for centuries.
After stumbling on a copper-silver deposit atop Toad Mountain, American brothers Osner and Winslow Hall set up camp in the Nelson area.
In the midst of a lucrative silver mining rush, a thriving community is officially incorporated as the Village of Kaslo.
Lighting up the city streets, the Nelson Electric Light Company constructs the first-ever hydroelectric plant in BC.
Touchstones Nelson Museum After many years of housing its collection in various buildings, the Nelson and District Museum, Archives, Art Gallery and Historical Society (MAAG), finally found a permanent home. Ironically, it was in their original location! Since 2006 this current incarnation has served the Nelson community by displaying fascinating, timely and thought-provoking exhibits from the incredibly talented collection of local artists. Reasons to visit this beautifully restored space include the carefully curated permanent collections featuring local First Nations, mining, and European explorer history, as well as rotating exhibitions year-round. Unique, historical souvenirs can be found at the stellar gift shop. 502 Vernon Street, Nelson | 250.352.9813 | touchstonesnelson.ca (Map 3, 4) Photo: Touchstones Nelson
Whitewater Ski Resort You may have skied some great terrain, but you’ve probably never seen snow quite like this before. Legendary among serious thrill-seekers who love it for the amazingly deep pow that keeps on coming through the winter months, Whitewater’s recent lift system upgrade opened up a huge portion of the mountain’s beloved back country. The upgrade puts them where they belong in the famous “2000-foot vertical club,” but you’ll love this hill for its astounding 12m (40 foot) annual snowfall. Epic doesn’t even begin to describe it! Cross-country trails also available. Ainsworth Hot Springs
Did you know?
Nelson and Kaslo are home to more than 350 Victorian-style heritage homes and buildings, circa 1900. Check with local Visitor Centres for more details.

The City of Nelson is officially incorporated, bringing “law & order” to its 3,000 industrious citizens.
The Nelson Street Railway is replaced by a regular bus system that operates without the use of train tracks.
With the passing of the last legally recognized member, the government wrongfully declares the Sinixt people an extinct Nation; however, they are still very much alive today.

Two words: natural cave. Being one of those things that you absolutely have to see to believe, the natural horseshoe-shaped cave at Ainsworth Hot Springs will leave your regular hot tub jealous, but will soothe and relax your muscles and mind. The hot water (average cave temperature is 42oC / 114 oF) is about waist high while walking through the cave, and gently drips from stalagmites and stalactites overhead. The larger soaking pool has an average temperature of 35 oC (96 oF) and offers outstanding views of adjacent Kootenay Lake. Let sparkly snowflakes adorn your hair in winter, while crisp air catches your breath, but really Ainsworth is a year-round luxury. For a bracing jolt, take a plunge in the icy creek-water cold pool, with its fluctuating seasonal temperature (read: glacial in winter!). With the pools open 365 days per year and daily passes allowing re-entry for a modest price (about $16.00), it will be difficult to get anything else accomplished on your trip! Ko N ot el The Langham Cultural Centre en so Originally built as a hotel in 1896, this historic building had practically ay n & perished to dust, when a group of Kaslo residents decided to fully restore La iii it. After many incarnations through the years, including a wooden boat factory and bank, the building was officially re-opened in 1978 as a cultural centre to ke i celebrate the past, present and future of Kaslo and its surrounding area. This awardwinning facility now houses the Japanese Canadian Museum, live theatre productions, local events and year-round art gallery exhibits. It’s a thriving part of the local community that you don’t want to miss! 447 A Avenue, Kaslo | 250.353.2661 | thelangham.ca (Map 11, D11)
SS Moyie This lovingly preserved ship has been around since the grand mining days of the Kootenays, circa 1900. At the end of a glorious 59-year career in 1957, it was Canada’s last surviving fully operational passenger sternwheeler and still remains the world’s oldest intact vessel of its kind. Very cool. These days the SS Moyie can be found on the shores of Kaslo, and from mid-May to mid-October visitors can enjoy self-guided tours of the ship’s interior and even a chance to blow the whistle! 324 Front Street, Kaslo | 250.353.2525 | klhs.bc.ca (Map 11, D11) Photo: Time Travel BC

Capitol Theatre Since 1927, this 426-seat theatre has been entertaining locals and travellers with live performances including music, dance, theatre and practically everything you can imagine. The theatre’s primary function was for movies, but it also housed regular live performances by the Nelson Little Theatre and the Rossland Light Opera Players. Today, this beautiful, art deco building provides an intimate setting for year-round shows ranging from touring ballet companies to comedy troupes. 421 Victoria Street, Nelson | Box Office: 250.352.6363 | capitoltheatre.bc.ca (Map 2 , inset) Photo: Timothy Shafer

Nelson Electric Tramway Travel aboard a part of history on Nelson’s authentic Streetcars #23 and #400, where you’ll have unrivalled views of the city’s lakefront and adjacent shores. These original cars were in service in the early 1900s and have been restored for locals and visitors to enjoy a peaceful journey beside the water. Cottonwood Falls and Market This hidden gem is tucked away on the outskirts of Nelson offering a serene setting for picnic lunches, photo ops and family fun with its cascading waterfall and lush grassy areas. Summer months bring the beloved weekly market with live music, local and regional foods for sale, and handmade clothing, making it the hippest farmers’ market you’ll ever attend. With the gentle rush of the waterfall and the surrounding greenery, it’ll be hard to believe the highway and city streets are just minutes away. Renowned for its unassuming scenic views of the surrounding mountainous shores, this 45-minute ride is also the world’s longest free ferry! Loading from Balfour Terminal (west shore) and Kootenay Bay Terminal (east shore) the route serves as a main highway between Nelson, the East Shore of Kootenay Lake and Creston, and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, calming ferry rides you’ll ever take. Located about 35km (21 miles) northeast of Nelson and 70km (43 miles) northwest of Creston, taking the ferry is a slightly longer trip than crossing the sky-high Kootenay pass, but offers great opportunities to access the wealth of local artisans and attractions along the lakeside highway. A Vibrant Culture Annual Festivals
West Kootenay EcoSociety
Never shy to celebrate, Nelson and Kaslo host a wide array of festivals and markets both in town and in neighbouring communities. Numerous parades, events and live entertainment take place throughout the whole year, making every month a great time to visit the area. The Shambhala Music Festival takes place every August, and after a decade of bringing the best in international and local dj talent, now attracts crowds of over 10,000 enthusiastic music lovers. It’s a three-day journey of 24-hour, non-stop dance, trance and hard-hitting beats in a magical, fairy tale village setting in the secluded Salmo forest. Late summer is also the time for the ever-popular Kaslo Jazz Summer Music Festival, which sees a host of talented musicians descend on the shores of Kootenay Lake to partake in one of the most anticipated summer festivals around. And right in the heart of Nelson’s downtown core there are weekly outdoor summer markets with the finest in local foods, artisan crafts and live music to go along with it, as well as fantastic festivals happening throughout the year.
Mural Art
Nelson & Kootenay Lake 2011 | visitorschoice.com
All around the Nelson and Kootenay Lake area, artists have left their indelible mark through outdoor mural art. These large-scale testaments to the life and times of the people who have come and gone through the area offer a glimpse into local folklore and thriving communities. Impressive to behold, there are murals depicting various aspects of local events and historical milestones. They help to give a visual reference and indeed serve as landmarks to recount the tales of these rich historical communities.
Nelson History The waters of Kootenay Lake were used by Ktunaxa peoples long before the discovery of rich mineral ores in the region. But it wasn’t until the end of 1886, when gold prospectors from Colville, Washington accidentally discovered high-grade ore on Toad Mountain that a nearby settlement sprang up overlooking the shores of the lake. Established and incorporated in 1897, Nelson was named after British Columbia’s former lieutenant governor, Hugh Nelson. >> Auth Ride N eNt ic s elsoN ’ tRe etcA s R # 2

>> But the town has known a number of monikers. Originally named Salisbury, it was subsequently renamed Stanley prior to receiving its current designation. Because of its location close to both water and rail transportation routes, the “Queen City” prospered and grew as a government and commercial centre with its own streetcar system. The city’s first mayor, John Houston, was the editor of Nelson’s newspaper, The Miner. Houston also built the province’s first hydroelectric plant at Cottonwood Falls and went on to serve as a controversial member of the BC legislature. Nelson offers something for every visitor, especially those interested in heritage, the arts or outdoor recreation. The imposing structures of brick and stone in the city centre and houses of late Victorian design have been beautifully maintained, making Nelson a historic site that offers all the modern amenities visitors require. While in Nelson, be sure to visit the local museum, and then ride Streetcar No. 23, the last survivor of Nelson’s original transit system. – Courtesy Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art & History

Northwest of Kootenay Lake and along Highway 31A, the early mining days of the West Kootenay region come vividly to life. Through preserved artifacts and historical heritage buildings, you’ll be amazed by the area’s rough and tumble past. Like a Hollywood movie, this region was once home to bustling communities thriving from an economic boom, but when the rush wore off, so did the town’s luster and eventually these towns subsided. Remnants of their glory days can still be seen today in these well-preserved “ghost towns” dotted along the highway. Here’s a few worth exploring. Sandon Once the heart of the “Slivery Slocan” mining region in the early 1900s, complete with 29 hotels, many theatres and even a soft drink factory, the town of Sandon is a fascinating journey into the lives and history of local pioneers. Located halfway between Kaslo and New Denver along Highway 31A, the remote town is home to hundreds of period artifacts, stored in their original buildings and offers guided tours explaining the area’s eventual demise. Cody Just minutes from Sandon, lies another forgotten mining town that at one time was a village of 150 residents and served as the “end-of-the-line” for the important K&S Railway line. Today, the abandoned concentrator mill and the K&S Railway station house mark the site of this once thriving community. Retallack What was once a bustling sawmill and mining town is now the home of the year-round operational, full-service Retallack Lodge, offering hiking in the summer and cat-skiing in winter.

ith summers hot enough for lake swimming and winters mild but overflowing with light, fluffy snow, Nelson and Kootenay Lake are year-round outdoor adventure playgrounds! There’s no shortage of exciting activities to keep you and the whole family thrilled and engaged. Among the area’s greatest riches are the thousands of square kilometres of surrounding backcountry, making it a virtual haven for hiking, mountain biking, golfing, kayaking, climbing, and winter sports like snowboarding, cross-country and downhill skiing. Locals love to stay fit and their ambitious attitude is contagious, so get ready for amazing experiences in some of BC’s most beautiful landscapes. You’ll wish you had way more time to explore everything there is to do here!
Swimming If you ask a local, they might reluctantly tell you about all the secret swimming spots in the area, but it’s not hard to find great beaches within city limits in both Nelson and Kaslo. Just head to the water’s edge when the temperature hits those high degrees in the summer, and you’re set. Specifically, Kootenay Lake spans the distance between these two popular destinations and sandy beaches can be found at Lakeside Park in Nelson and along the city shore in Kaslo. The glacier-fed lake can definitely be brisk if you’re used to tropical waters, but during the scorching West Kootenay summers, it’s a welcome refresher.

n Ride Open Trails: Respect trail and road closures — ask a land manager for clarification if you are uncertain about the status of a trail. Do not trespass on private land. Obtain permits or other authorization as required. Be aware that bicycles are not permitted in areas protected as state or federal Wilderness. n Leave No Trace: Be sensitive to the dirt beneath you. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage than dry ones. When the trail is soft, consider other riding options. This also means staying on existing trails and not creating new ones. Don’t cut switchbacks. Be sure to pack out at least as much as you pack in. n Control Your Bicycle: Inattention for even a moment could put yourself and others at risk. Obey all bicycle speed regulations and recommendations, and ride within your limits. n Yield Appropriately: Do your utmost to let your fellow trail users know you’re coming — a friendly greeting or bell ring are good methods. Try to anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to other nonmotorized trail users, unless the trail is clearly signed for bike-only travel. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill, unless the trail is clearly signed for oneway or downhill-only traffic. In general, strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one. n Never Scare Animals: Animals are easily startled by an unannounced approach, a sudden movement or a loud noise. Give animals enough room and time to adjust to you. When passing horses, use special care and follow directions from the horseback riders (ask if uncertain). Running cattle and disturbing wildlife are serious offenses. n Plan Ahead: Know your equipment, your ability and the area in which you are riding and prepare accordingly. Strive to be self-sufficient: keep your equipment in good repair and carry necessary supplies for changes in weather or other conditions. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.

ince 1976 when the first chair took eager riders up the hill, Whitewater Ski Resort has been capturing the hearts and spirit of adventure of the local community. Thought to be “avant-garde” for its time, the hill was designed with trees intact, rather than wide open runs, making for great terrain and challenging runs. Add that together with the sweet, sweet “pow” that riders love and you have a perfect recipe for some awesome sessions. Of course, everyone knows that the only way to make a perfect ride even better is to go where no one else would think to, and that’s part of what makes Whitewater so alluring. Miles upon miles of fresh, untouched secret stashes, have lined the backside of the Whitewater hill, tempting snow-lovers for decades, but now with the new Whitewater expansion lift system, riders won’t run the risk of getting lost in the backcountry. But don’t worry, there will be lots of untouched backcountry still available for those die-hard adventurers. Opening up an additional 3km2 (749 acres) of pure, deep Kootenay snow means fewer line-ups with better access to more steeps, deeps and glades on powder days. This hill is legendary for its powdery soft snow and amazing terrain, which the new expansion has now doubled in size and now riders can bask in the view of gorgeous mountains from the brand new 623m (2044-foot) lift system, that puts Whitewater in the illustrious “over 2000-foot vertical club.” With one triple, two double chair lifts and one handle tow, Whitewater’s new lift system brings opportunities for awesome snow fun, for every experience level. The drive is popular with travellers of all kinds, and is particularly great fun on a motorcycle. If you cross the international border into the U.S., be prepared to show proper identification, such as a valid passport. Refer to Canada Border Services Agency (cbsa.gc.ca) for more information and visit selkirkloop.org to learn more about this scenic journey.

The sweeping ranges of the 2400m (8000-foot) ice-capped peaks of the majestic Valhalla Mountains, with their razor-straight angles and exposed rock faces, tower above the roadside. These steep summits can seem daunting, but venturing further brings a playground of largely untouched wilderness, ideal for hiking and camping in summer and world-class backcountry snow adventures, like snowcat- and heli-skiing in winter. Locals also love the panoramic vistas seen from the soaring top of Idaho Peak. Accessed from Highway 31A at the power plant station in the ghost town of Sandon, this easy hiking trail is one of the best places to view alpine wildflowers in late July and early August. Bring your camera for some amazing 360o panoramic photo opportunities. The area is also rich with the cultural histories of the Sinixt First Nations, Canadian Japanese, Russian Doukhobors and “Silvery Slocan” mining days. Museums throughout the Valley, like the Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre and Sandon Museum pay homage to these important stories and keep their legacies alive today.

Nelson After Dark Pub Crawl
Lucas Jmieff
Play pool, foosball (table soccer), enjoy startlingly great food and sip pints of Nelson Brewing Company beer at Mike’s Place Pub in the Hume Hotel. Locals love it, and you will too for their three-tiered, open concept layout and awesome extreme adventure movies on the big screens. Retro styling and an authentic HarleyDavidson motorcycle (inside the bar!) lend an art deco flare to the Uptown Sportsbar in downtown Nelson. It’s a great place to watch the big game with friends, sip tantalizing cocktails and munch on some impressive pub fare. After dark and well into the late hours of the night, local dj’s pump out beats for hypnotized crowds. Spirit Bar is one of Nelson’s favourite hot spots with regular live musical acts and international, regional and local dj’s mixing sets. The pulsing vibe and ultra-modern underground atmosphere are sure to get you through the night.
