Generating more than power...

Brilliant Dam and Expansion, near Castlegar Columbia Power may be a small local company, but we have lots of experience when it comes to managing the construction of hydro-electric projects. Over the past ten years, we’ve managed construction on behalf of our partner, Columbia Basin Trust, on the 185 MW Arrow Lakes Generating Station and the 120 MW Brilliant Expansion Project, both near Castlegar. Now, along with Columbia Basin Trust and our new

this little city with big heart and abundant community spirit.

From outdoor adventures and family fun, to fine dining and engaging nightlife, Castlegar has a wide variety of attractions to suit every taste, and is rich with cultural history. With so much to explore, you’ll love this great city and soon understand why it all starts here!

Castlegar 2011 | visitorschoice.com

Castlegar SculptureWalk Cruise down Columbia Avenue and you’ll be whisked away in an outdoor art gallery. With 25 original sculptures lining city streets, the 2011 SculptureWalk will be a delight for passersby, and for one lucky sculptor, will mean the purchase of their art by the City of Castlegar, to be displayed in the community. From steel and aluminum to granite and bronze, these artistic monuments are created by local and international artists and are on display throughout the whole year. Vote for your favourite sculpture as part of the People’s Choice Award and be part of history! Did you know? Castlegar is the “greatest dam city in the world,” with at least nine hydro-electric dams nearby.

FYI 6

The original inhabitants of the Castlegar area were the Lakes Indian people, from the Interior Salishan linguistic and cultural group.

1891:

1902:

Edward Mahon buys 129 ha (320 acres) of land, and names his new settlement “Castlegar” after his homestead in Ireland.

After the rail bridge is completed, a new train station is built in Castlegar, making it an important hub of passenger and cargo activity.

Syringa Creek Provincial Park Situated on the sunny north shore of the Lower Arrow Lake, this park is a great place to camp with the whole family for several days or a few weeks! With a wide range of recreational opportunities you’ll enjoy canoeing, cycling, fishing, hiking, swimming, water skiing, and windsurfing. All this excitement is just a short 20-minute drive from downtown Castlegar, in Robson. 2011 is BC Parks’ 100th anniversary, so be sure to make your reservations early. 5570 Broadwater Road, Robson | Reservations: 1.800.689.9025 | env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks | westkootenayparks.com (Map 3, A7) Photo: Wally Soukoroff

Kootenay Gallery of Art, History and Science With a colourfully painted lush floral exterior, the Kootenay Gallery invites visitors to explore their diverse collection of rotating exhibits and carefully curated gift shop items. Even the Gallery grounds are a thing of beauty with a working sundial, butterfly and xeriscape gardens and a habitat restoration project, all overlooking the Columbia River below. From large-scale paintings to beautiful hand-crafted jewellery, and local and international artists from every artistic medium, this gallery is a hidden treasure worth discovering. The Gallery also hosts regular events including music concerts, kids and artist workshops and fundraisers. Definitely worth a visit! 1924:

Arriving from the Canadian prairies, Doukhobor migrants begin to settle in the Castlegar area, bringing their peaceful, agricultural lifestyle.

Built entirely by hand, the Brilliant Suspension Bridge is open to the public. A sign above the bridge reads: “Strictly prohibited: smoking and trespassing with fire arms over this bridge.”

Peter V. Verigin, beloved leader of the Doukhobor people, dies suddenly in a mysterious train explosion.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2011, this expansive village teaches about the rich heritage of the Doukhobor people. These beautifully landscaped grounds and perfectly restored buildings offer a glimpse into a typical day for these peaceful Russian descendants. View over 1,000 authentic artifacts such as the “petch” (bread baking oven) and wood-fired “banya” (sauna) as you tour the village and audio visual room with its exceptional photo and documentary film archive. The on-site gallery has books, crafts, music, films and souvenir items for sale. Open May – September. 112 Heritage Way, Castlegar | 250.365.5327 | doukhobor-museum.org (Map 3, E2)

This serene riverside path is part of a larger network of paved trails along the Columbia River. With mostly flat stretches and the occasional incline, this beautiful treelined walkway is a local favourite for early morning jogs, romantic moonlight strolls and lazy days on the beach. Located just minutes from downtown, the walkway has two baseball diamonds and a playground, and is close to Zuckerberg Island. 100 5th Street, Castlegar | castlegar.ca (Map 3, B3) Photo: Wally Soukoroff

Zuckerberg Island This enchanted island is a tranquil oasis, just minutes from downtown Castlegar. Walk across the award-winning 144-metre (473-foot) suspension bridge to explore forested pathways leading to idyllic riverside picnic spots on the Columbia River. Several plaques detail local history including the Lakes Salish people who fished and built their winter pit houses here, thousands of years ago. In summer, tour the Island’s Russian Orthodox style Chapel House centerpiece, the former home of Alexander Zuckerberg and his family. 901 7th Avenue, Castlegar | 250.365.6440 | stationmuseum.ca (Map 3, C3) Photo: Castlegar Chamber of Commerce

Columbia & Western Railway Trail This diverse terrain trail system travels for 168km (104 miles) from Castlegar to Midway, BC where it catches up with the Kettle Valley Rail Trail. Following the original railway line, you’ll be delighted with spectacular mountain vistas from high altitude forested peaks and have your bravery tested by trestle bridges and tunnels. Total travel time from Castlegar to Midway is approximately 8 hours (cycling), with amenities along the way at various town sites. The trail is open to pedestrian, bicycle, horseback and cross-country ski traffic and can be accessed just west of Castlegar, past the Hugh Keenleyside Dam. 1967:

With the completion of a road to the City of Trail, Castlegar’s population increases to 10,000 residents.

With the Columbia River Treaty in place, construction of the Hugh Keenleyside dam begins. This same year, Selkirk College is built.

Castlegar gets an “upgrade” and is incorporated as a “town.”

The Village of Kinnaird is incorporated into a town.

Brilliant Suspension Bridge In May 2010, this National Historic Site of Canada was once again opened for non-motorized traffic. Built entirely by hand in 1913, the bridge was part of the main highway between Castlegar and Nelson, as well as the crossing between the Doukhobor homesteads in Ootischenia and their productive agricultural lands in Brilliant. With a towering height of 15m (49 feet) and a length of 100m (328 feet), the bridge majestically spans the Kootenay River below and is a proud testament of Doukhobor craftsmanship. The bridge can be accessed at the east end of Brilliant Road, from the Robson Access Road. brilliant-bridge.ca (Map 3, C1) Photo: Castlegar Chamber of Commerce

Did you know? Castlegar is known as the “crossroads of the Kootenays.” Located at the confluence of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers, it’s exactly halfway between Vancouver and Calgary.

Element Club Bar Grill This multi-purpose, two level facility is one of the largest of its kind in BC. With a 600-person capacity and award-winning sound and lighting design, you’ll be tempted to come for the party, but you’ll also be pleased with the food. Listed as a “club, bar and grill,” the Element has some of the best cuisine in town and a stellar wine list to match. 292 Columbia Avenue, Castlegar | 250.365.8066 | clubelement.ca (Map 4) Photo: Matt Tidball

After initial construction in 1950, the West Kootenay Regional Airport begins its first regular jet airplane flight service.

The two communities of Castlegar and Kinnaird are officially incorporated into the larger “City of Castlegar,” making it one of the youngest cities in BC!

Literally the birthplace of Castlegar, this authentic Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) station was once a bustling hub of activity, with trains carrying passengers and cargo between Nelson and Castlegar. Almost a century old, the building is now a remarkable museum, complete with perfectly preserved caboose car open for tours, and original second storey living quarters filled with antique treasures and local memorabilia. The museum also houses Castlegar news archives and has an on-site gift shop. 400 13th Avenue, Castlegar | 250.365.6440 | stationmuseum.ca (Map 3, B4; Map 4) Photo: Wally Soukoroff

Worldly Cultures

With year-round festivals and special events, including the annual Home and Lifestyle Expo, Sunfest, Fall Fair and Equestrian Show, SculptureWalk, Highland Games and the Winterfest tree lighting festivities, there’s always something exciting to do here. In between festivals, there’s plenty of opportunities to learn about the cultural histories of Castlegar’s early settlers and present communities at any of the many local attractions. Year-round, you’ll enjoy galleries, museums, and craft stores where local artists can be seen creating works of beauty that reflect the beauty of the Castlegar area, and summer brings the annual ArtWalk exhibition, when the works of dozens of local artists transform businesses into mini-galleries. See What’s Happening on page 10 for a list of local events.

Verigin Memorial Park: Located just off Hwy 3A (on the Robson Access Road) and surrounded by lush foliage and dazzling flowers, this historic monument offers unparalleled vistas of Castlegar’s expanse, including the Brilliant Suspension Bridge, the Brilliant Dam, and the magnificent confluence of the Columbia and Kootenay rivers. This breathtaking monument overlooks the original Doukhobor agricultural lands in Brilliant, and houses the Verigin Tomb: the final resting place of Peter V. Verigin, his son Peter P. Verigin and their wives, who all served as leaders of the Doukhobor community in Castlegar. The park is best enjoyed in summer when the beloved rose gardens are in full bloom and volunteer staff are available to provide tours and historical information. Cultural Confluence

Message from the Beetle: Claire Kujundzic explores nature and how the pine beetle impacts our forests. Showing July 29 September 11 at the Kootenay Gallery of Art.

Museums, Galleries, Theatre Castlegar is widely recognized for its strong support and celebration of its vibrant arts, heritage and cultural events. Check out the CPR Station Museum, a historic train station complete with authentic caboose and awesome gift shop for a taste of local history and artistic culture. Or visit the Kootenay Gallery of Art for a taste of local and international artists, crafters and artisans. As one of the original 28 government-funded exhibition centres built in the 1970s, the Kootenay Gallery has remained a vital part of the Castlegar artistic and cultural community, providing a spectacular, professional venue for local and regional artists to exhibit and sell their work. In addition, Castlegar is home to a multiplex cinema facility with five separate screens, perfect for spending rainy days indoors or cooling off with some air-conditioning during the steamy summer months. And you’ll want to bring the whole family to the Brilliant Cultural Centre during any one of their great local shows and performances, including live theatre, dance recitals and traditional Doukhobor ceremonies and services.

Castlegar 2011 | visitorschoice.com

Castlegar is home to a mosaic of citizens from around the country and indeed, all over the world. Initially used as a trading and fishing area for First Nations residents, the area soon attracted European trappers and fur traders. In 1888, Sproat’s Landing, located on the north shore of the Columbia River, was the first proposed townsite for the area. A railway bridge was built across the Columbia in 1902, spurring the construction of a railway station, a hotel, and other buildings in Castlegar. Beginning in 1908, more than 5,000 Doukhobors migrated here and acquired land on which to live their traditional communal lifestyle in peace. Today Castlegar flourishes through the important cultural contributions of these societies and their dynamic community spirit. Visit the Doukhobor Discovery Centre, Verigin Memorial Park, the Brilliant Suspension Bridge, Zuckerberg Island and the MIR Centre for Peace, which honours the traditions of the Sinixt, Ktunaxa and Doukhobors, to learn more.

Worldly Cultures MIR Centre for Peace

Wally Soukoroff

With a mandate to understand and build cultures of peace through learning, this important building is both an educational facility and a gathering place for local events, such as the “Peace Café” and various lecture series. Situated on traditional Sinixt / Ktunaxa lands and housed in a fully-restored, original Doukhobor homestead, this beautiful centre overlooks the Columbia River and the city of Castlegar, and is located on the Selkirk College campus. The MIR Centre for Peace is seen as an important building block for discussions and forward movement on the fundamental idea of peace and what it stands for, not only in the community of Castlegar, but also for our world today and tomorrow. 301 Frank Beinder Way, Castlegar | 250.365.7292 | selkirk.ca

Castlegar 2011 | visitorschoice.com

Doukhobor History Between 1908 and 1913 the largest internal migration in Canada took place when 5,000 Doukhobor migrants moved from the prairies to the West Kootenay area. As the site of the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers, an historic transportation route, the arrival of the Doukhobors and their original purchase of 5,666 ha (14,000 acres) of land led to major agrarian settlements. By 1913, 5,000 Doukhobors had arrived; developing basic agriculture, orchards, lumber mills, irrigation projects, brick yards, roads, bridges, apiaries and the construction of over 90 communal villages. The spacious, beautiful valley of Castlegar would become a new place of refuge and was named Dolina Ootishenie, the “Valley of Consolation,” by Peter V. Verigin, their leader at the time. By the time Verigin suffered an untimely tragic death in 1924, the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood operated 28,975 ha (71,600 acres) in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. In addition, the migration was assisted by Leo Tolstoy, through his negotiation and fundraising efforts. Tolstoy is fondly remembered by the Doukhobors as their saviour in a time of dire need. To learn more about Doukhobor culture and lifestyle, and view over 1,000 artifacts representing their pioneering arts, crafts, customs and religion, visit the Doukhobor Discovery Centre.

Castlegar Communities in Bloom

Wally Soukoroff

Castlegar 2011 | visitorschoice.com

Wally Soukoroff

All over the city gardens and landscaping proudly bloom in Castlegar. As part of their rewarding contribution to the national Communities in Bloom program, Castlegar has been designated a “5 Bloom” community, one of the highest honours granted by the program, for their hard work and dedication to beautifying their city. Whether it’s colourful hanging baskets lining Columbia Avenue, bright red tulips blossoming outside local retailers or the wide variety of floral and rock gardens, as well as outdoor sculpture adorning local homes and public spaces, this town is blooming and it shows. For over eight years now, Castlegar has been participating in this brilliant program that brings communities together in spirit and hard work, as they lovingly tend local gardens. Citizens are inspired with civic pride, the city is revitalized with a renewed direction, and visitors love the beauty and vibrancy of the area. Communities in Bloom is a Canadian not-for-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a national program, with a focus on the promotion and value of green spaces in urban settings. communitiesinbloom.ca

Winter Wonderland

astlegar’s winter months provide endless outdoor adventure opportunities. Snowmobile and snowshoe through forested trails, try your hand at ice fishing or hit the slopes for some snow-capped Nordic fun. Whatever your winter pleasure, it starts here!

Cross-country Skiing Cross country ski enthusiasts will find countless trails leading through pristine winter fields and forested areas, like the popular Paulson Cross-Country Ski Trails and adjacent Nancy Greene Provincial Park. The Castlegar Nordic Ski Club provides approximately 40km (28 miles) of well-maintained cross-country ski trails, plus another 8.5km (5 miles) left untracked, that range in levels suitable for the beginner or the advanced. With various terrain and vegetation types and four warming shelters distributed through the area, it’s no wonder over 15,000 skiers visit these trails every year! Cross-country ski gear rentals are also available locally. Trail maps: castlegarnordic.ca.

Lucas Jmieff

Snowmobiling Join the fun of one of the fastest growing outdoor recreation pursuits in BC: snowmobiling! The Castlegar Snowmobile Association grooms over 70km (43 miles) of phenomenal trails throughout the area to suit the pleasure of every snowmobile enthusiast in search of unique terrain and natural beauty. 250.365.7087 | castlegarsnowmobile association.com

With tons of open terrain and a variety of trails to choose from, snowshoeing in Castlegar is a true winter treat. With two web-like “shoes” strapped beneath your boots, you’ll be trekking over deep drifts in no time. Check out the hiking chart on page 30 to see a list of local trails and also venture around town to find some sweet spots of your own.

Downhill Skiing The ideal location for those lusting after true north ski and snowboard adventure, Castlegar is centrally located between Whitewater Winter Resort’s deep snow, varied terrain and authentic character and Red Mountain Resort’s world-class steep and deep tree skiing. Can’t decide where to go? With both accessible within an hour’s drive, one weekend in Castlegar lets you try both! skiwhitewater.com | redresort.com

L

ocated on the southern tip of the Arrow Lakes chain, at the convergence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers, Castlegar is a perfect base for a whole range of outdoor activities. With stunning mountain peaks and gorgeous river valleys, it’s an amazing place for admiring nature and all its accompanying adventures. Fishing

Wally Soukoroff

An angler’s paradise, the spectacular waterways surrounding Castlegar are noted for some of the best fly fishing in North America; just ask any of the local experienced guides and they will lead you to the secret spots that fishermen only dream of. Like the popular Columbia River and Lower Arrow Lake, where exceptional Bull and Rainbow Trout are regularly caught, as well as Walleye and Kokanee salmon. Other great spots nearby include the Kootenay River between Castlegar and Nelson, with catches ranging from Bull Trout and Kokanee to Whitefish and Rainbow Trout up to 2kg (4 pounds) in size, in addition to Nancy Greene Lake 29km (18 miles) west of Castlegar on Hwy 3, which is a great spot for children, with its easily accessible and relatively safe shoreline.

28

With so many waterways right within city limits and close by, its no wonder this town loves to boat! Whether it’s a simple canoe, or a full-power speedboat, there’s a perfect spot to set your vessel in the water. Paved boat launches can be found in Robson, Syringa Creek Provincial Park and Scotties Marina, which also has moorage available.

Swimming Whether you like to relax in the sun on warm sandy beaches or discover unique gems on rocky shores, Castlegar has a beach for you. From right within town, beaches like Millennium Walkway and Zuckerberg Island offer perfect spots for impromptu picnics, and just minutes outside the city limits, you’ll find Syringa Creek Provincial Park with its large sandy beach, hugging the relatively calm Lower Arrow Lake, ideal for long days in the sun. Looking for a quick dip on the way to Nelson? Plan a stop at Shore Acres or Crescent Valley beach. These river-fed waterways have swift currents and brisk temperatures, so be sure to keep your wits about you.

Boating

With a championship 18-hole course, a 9-hole par-3 course, and many more courses virtually at its doorstep, Castlegar has something for every golfer. Castlegar Golf Club (18-hole) This beautiful course perched on a hill overlooking the city offers outstanding value for golfers. With a par-72 championship course, great aftergame amenities and friendly staff, it’s no wonder this venue regularly hosts prestigious events and tournaments. (Map 3, D1) 1602 Aaron Road, Ootischenia | 250.365.5006 | golfcastlegar.com Little Bear Golf (9-hole) Although Little Bear Golf Resort has only nine greens, it creates the illusion of 18 holes by having 18 separate tee boxes. The course is well-suited for beginners and attracts lots of families, but can also challenge the most seasoned golfer. (Map 3, G2) 872 Waterloo Road, Castlegar | littlebeargolf.net

Rock Climbing

The Castlegar area is quickly becoming known as one of the best rock climbing locations in the province. With stellar sites available all around the city, here are just a few bouldering options to get you started: Bird’s Nest Boulder, Robson (base of Lion’s Head mountain), the Brilliant Overlook, Syringa Provincial Park and Kinnard/ Waterline. castlegar.ca | rockclimbing.com If you’re looking to test your “spidey senses” in a safer environment, head to the Selkirk College indoor climbing facility. With walls of varying difficulty, padded floor and tons of holds, it’s an impressive bouldering cave facility that won’t let you down. 301 Frank Beinder Way, Castlegar | 250.365.1292 | selkirk.ca

Looking to entertain the whole family on a hot summer’s day or a brisk winter afternoon? Check out these great activities. In the city’s south end, you will find the Castlegar & District Recreation Centre, which features a 25m (27 yard) indoor pool, children’s pool, steam room, whirlpool, and fitness room. Just outside you’ll find a soccer field, baseball in a Championship Setting diamond and Rotary Skateboard Park.
