WORDS FAIL to describe the natural thrill and sheer spectacle of this world-renowned

450-foot cable bridge that swings high above Capilano Canyon. And once you conquer it, there is much, much more to see including the gravity defying Treetops Adventure, a series of suspension bridges and high platforms that stretch into the upper reaches of the living coastal rainforest. Come and experience it all and like the millions from around the globe who have visited since 1889, you’ll swear by it.

Vancouver Spring 2011 | visitorschoice.com

Branded Decadence This city has a growing fashion appetite, and retailers are quickly expanding their businesses to accommodate shoppers’ needs. Vancouver doesn’t have just regular “malls” in the downtown core, these are high-end shopping centres: Pacific Centre and Sinclair Centre have the best in fashion-forward lines, straight from international runways. Further south, visit Vancouver’s first-ever shopping centre, Oakridge Centre for top-notch brands and famous design houses, and in Burnaby, Metropolis at Metrotown is BC’s biggest with over 450 shops and boutiques. With so many exciting retailers and destination shopping spots, it’s easy to see why the Vancouver shopping scene is so hot. International brands such as Chanel, Gucci, Betsey Johnson, Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton are found in favourite shopping neighbourhoods like Heritage District, Yaletown, Gastown and Alberni Street. So take your turn in one of these great retailers’ dressing rooms to fuel your love of shopping and join the many fashionistas who’ve chosen Vancouver as the ultimate fashion destination.

These design-conscious retailers offer the highest in quality and trend-setting fashion, reflecting the city’s unique au courant moods. Check out these hot spots to source original souvenirs to perfect your knockout wardrobe.

Nine O’Clock Gun (various retailers, check web: nineoclockgun.com) gives visitors a fabulous way to capture their “rain city” love and proudly announce it to the world. A local badge of honour, these Vancouverspecific, artistically minimalist t-shirts provide a modern alternative to the “Vancouver teaspoon” souvenir and feature famous locals like David Suzuki, Trevor Linden, and Joe Fortes in technicolour. Echo Rain ECO Apparel (various retailers, check web: ecorain.ca) is not only a leader in Vancouver design, but are also industry front-runners who design, manufacture, and distribute their own fabrics from scratch, all right here in Vancouver to create a clothing line made entirely made of sustainable, eco-friendly dresses and separates.

Downtown / Granville Street Take the SkyTrain to one of six downtown stations, convenient to nearby amenities and shops. It only takes about an hour to walk this core district filled with international restaurants, unique boutiques, and big name retailers. Or head inside to a fabulous shopping mall like Pacific Centre, Sinclair Centre or Royal Centre for superior retailers featuring the most luxurious and trendconscious fashions. On weekends when the sun goes down, the area comes to life, with theatre and concert venues, nightclubs and lounges pulsing with live music and glamorous faces. Granville Street is closed to vehicle traffic making it a pedestrian’s heaven. This is the district where locals and visitors meet up for good times, lots of laughs and memories to last a lifetime. downtownvancouver.net

Carrall Street & Maple Tree Square

26

The literal “birthplace” of Vancouver, Maple Tree Square is where the famous John “Gassy Jack” Deighton opened his illicit whiskey-selling saloon, much to the millworkers’ delight and mill owner’s dismay. Almost like you’ve entered Europe, this appealing district features original 19th Century architecture housing antique shops, art galleries and contemporary retailers. In the evening, the area is alive with pubs and lounges featuring live music and fine spirits. Gassy Jack would approve of the pubs, but maybe not the romantic cobblestone streets…

Foodies Gastown

Tourism British Columbia

Named after John “Gassy Jack” Deighton, Gastown is older than Vancouver itself and was in fact where the city began. The area was declared a proper city named “Granville,” and is still home to the famous Steam Clock. Today Gastown is a vibrant cultural scene with visitors and locals enjoying fashionable boutiques, enticing cafés and cutting-edge galleries. Keep your eyes open for dozens of local shops selling iconic Vancouver souvenirs, fine Native artworks, and designer originals from fresh fashion retailers. Definitely worth visiting, day and night! gastown.org

Home to a wide array of authentic Asian restaurants, shopping malls and attractions, Richmond is renowned for its cultural significance and beauty. This is where you’ll find some of the best Asian culinary markets and retail shops in the Lower Mainland, offering genuine imported specialities from the Pacific region. In addition, the area boasts one of the largest Buddhist temples in North America. With a diverse selection of international restaurants, Richmond is famous for its Asian cuisine with options ranging from Northern Chinese and Taiwanese, to Japanese and Southeast Asian. tourismrichmond.com

Spectacular scenery and great courses guarantee a memorable outing for every golf enthusiast visiting Vancouver. The City of Vancouver has three outstanding municipal courses, all located within a reasonable distance of downtown. Fraserview, McCleery and Langara each have a rich golf history. Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Stan Leonard perfected his craft on the fairways of Fraserview. Green fees are moderate and the experience is outstanding, as all three courses were recently remodeled, are well maintained, and are Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries, recognizing their high environmental standards. University Golf Course located close to Shaughnessy on the UBC Endowment Lands is strictly a public play course and features the same magnificent tree lined fairways as the private clubs. This course has an impressive practice area and full academy as well as a great clubhouse with first-rate food and beverage outlets. The course itself is fair, fun and a real challenge. Take note of

the building immediately behind the 17th tee to see the stories of BC golf at the British Columbia Golf Museum. If time is an issue, consider Musqueam Golf and Learning Academy. This facility has good practice areas and offers league play for both women and men on its executive length course. Even a simple evening stroll can be enhanced by bringing a wedge, putter and ball to one of Vancouver’s most famous tourist attractions. Both Queen Elizabeth Park and Stanley Park offer fun little pitch and putts in spectacular settings. - Kris Jonasson

Get Outside!

V

ancouver in spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit this great city. With cherry blossoms blooming everywhere, the weather getting warmer and gentle sun shining down, you’ll definitely want to be outside. Whale Watching Few experiences compare to the exhilaration of being close enough to whales to see their signature markings and hear them splash in the water. Luckily, Vancouver tour operators give you a chance to do just that! You can start your journey from the historic Steveston fishing village, at the heart of the Fraser River, or from downtown Vancouver to spot these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Within minutes of leaving the city skyline behind, you’ll be exploring the Strait of Georgia, Fraser River Delta, and Gulf Islands territory, home to over 80 Orca whales with their striking black and white tones. These mighty creatures love to frolic in the water to the delight of curious on-lookers. You’ll also get a chance to see harbour seals, sea lions, porpoises and a variety of local marine wildlife who call the coastal Vancouver waters home, as well as birds such as bald eagles flying overhead. Definitely a camera-ready experience! - with files from Graeme McRanor

Family Fun

Get in touch with nature by renting bikes. Downtown rental shops offer a great way to explore Coal Harbour, English Bay, and Stanley Park’s 22km (13.7 mile) seawall. Plus riding is a breeze thanks to downtown’s new bike lanes. Rent a speedboat, charter a fishing tour, kayak around False Creek or watch whales frolic, right from Granville Island! Head up the hill, literally, with the famous Grouse Grind 2.9km (1.8 mile) hike up Grouse Mountain to an elevation of 853m (2,800 feet), or visit vancouvertrails.com for a list of local hikes.

pa-tourism has become a very hot trend, and in a city that’s both an amazing vacation destination and an impressive international business hub, wise travellers make regular expeditions into the blissful realm of spa treatments. And the fine art of balancing an urban lifestyle, as any savvy metropolitan Vancouverite can tell you, begins with the big three: Rest, Relaxation and Rejuvenation. This is the portal to tranquility of the city’s thriving spa culture. Lucky for you, this info will let you be privy to the pampering, too! - Danielle Prokop

Weather you’re a first-timer or a veteran spa-goer, Vancouver’s spa scene is diverse and vast enough to make for an incredible journey. Discovery can begin in the downtown core; a hotspot for stand-alone boutique spas and deluxe day-spas nestled within the city’s world-class hotels. Visit the Willow Stream Spa, located on the Fairmont Pacific Rim’s 5th floor (pictured), where a panoramic view of Vancouver is the backdrop of a true West Coast retreat. Nine treatment rooms, deep Japanese Zen tub, couples rooms and lounges are a few of many luxurious on-site facilities. Immerse yourself in a fitness program with a personal trainer, or simply indulge with exclusive spa services such as the “Coastal Mountain Body Wrap.” At Shangri-La Vancouver’s Chi luxury spa, you’ll find personalized signature body therapies and spa treatments based around the Chinese Philosophy of the “Five Elements.” Ancient Himalayan rituals inspire the “Healing Stone Massage” using stones heated in oils and herbs, while the “Jade Jewel Facial” draws upon the energetic properties of jade gemstones for facial massage. Your sanctuary is assured with private amenities including shower, bath, fireplace and lounge area in each individual treatment room and the private couple’s suite. In Vancouver, you’re sure to end up in a piece of heaven on earth. - Danielle Prokop

Soothing Spa Trends The diversity of the Vancouver spa scene reflects the unique personal experience of you, the client, with each city neighbourhood revealing a myriad of spas catering to current trends, weather it’s increasingly popular treatments for the male spa-goer, or state-of-the-art treatments such as infrared saunas. Look to Kitsilano and Gastown for au-courant eco-spas offering “green” services for an experience with personal, environmental and ethical serenity. A devoted yoga scene and numerous Ayurvedic spas that use traditional Indian methods will bring balance, centre the spirit, and stimulate the senses. For when you need to look as good outside as you feel inside, pop into a salon/day spa—they’re plentiful in major Vancouver malls and shopping districts. And to take polish and shine to the next level visit a medical spa for the latest in laser treatment and anti-aging dermatological skin-care. Yaletown and False Creek are noted to have these in abundance, along with countless other spa facilities! All that’s left to do is sit back, relax and get pampered. - Danielle Prokop

Dining

Canadian Tourism Commission

V

ancouver prides itself on the abundance of delicious dining options and amazingly satisfying cuisine. One thing is for certain: this town loves to eat, and they do it well.

Ranging from laid-back casual to fine linen napkins and five-course meals, this city is fully equipped to handle every discerning palate. Whether you’re looking for fresh-caught seafood or trendy tapas plates, you’ll find it all within easy reach. Of particular note are the city’s favourite culinary niches, including the downtown core, Yaletown, Kitsilano, Coal Harbour, Denman and Robson Streets. In addition, some of the best views can be found in restaurants lining the city’s shoreline from downtown to West Point Grey and everywhere in between. Your taste buds will never be the same and you’ll want to return again and again to this city where foodies rule.

68

Fresh, local and sustainable are three words taken very seriously in Vancouver. In a city surrounded by lush agricultural lands and seafood-rich waters, it’s no surprise that fresh cuisine is a huge selling point. For diners, Vancouver offers some of the most diverse culinary creations using locally-sourced ingredients. Indeed, the term local applies to more than just food around here, as the city has a bevy of talented chefs who grew up right here, and have made a name for themselves with high-end restaurants and delicious menus. In fact, some of these amazing chefs and entrepreneurs have been so successful they now operate satellite restaurants in other parts of the country. A perfect example of this trend is The Keg Steakhouse & Bar, which opened its doors in North Vancouver in 1971 and now has locations all across Canada and in the United States. In addition, the 100-Mile Diet and Ocean Wise were both born here, as was Green Table, a network of sustainable restaurants and foodservice outlets. Participating members pledge to reduce their environmental footprint by serving sustainable local foods, creating less waste, reducing water usage, and supporting like-minded local suppliers. Participants in the 100-Mile Diet pledge to consume foods that have travelled fewer than “100 miles” from where they live. There’s no shortage of creativity here, to the great benefit of hungry restaurant-goers. And when the food is this good, it’s hard to resist going out every night of the week.
