With our mild, sunny climate and spectacular coastal location, we have something for everyone Mayor Lois E. Jackson to see and do all year round. Just 20 minutes from Vancouver International Airport and the US border and home to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, Delta is easy to reach and convenient for getting to Vancouver, Whistler and beyond. Delta also has its own regional airport at Boundary Bay for private aircraft and several flight schools offering certified training programs. Three urban communities make up Delta – the sunniest region in the Lower Mainland. Go back in time and discover the heritage fishing village of Ladner. Kayak the mighty Fraser River delta and be thrilled by the multitude of migrating birds at Westham Island. In North Delta, the Delta Nature Reserve is a unique opportunity to discover the sights, sounds and smells of Burns Bog – the largest raised bog in North America and a must-see for eco-tourists. The boardwalk takes you through a land that time forgot with a fascinating array of plants, animals and insects. North Delta is also home to a thriving East Indian and South Asian culture which offers fantastic shopping. Visit beautiful Centennial Beach in the garden community of Tsawwassen. The warm, shallow waters and sandy shore are perfect for skim boarding, swimming, windsurfing and kite-flying. Agriculture is our primary industry – come and try the local produce, go berry picking and visit our fabulous wineries. However you choose to spend your time, we welcome you: come out and discover Delta - the natural playground. www.corp.delta.bc.ca

With a gold rush happening across BC, settlers make their way to Delta to search for their fortunes.
Spectacular Golf Six stellar courses await you in Delta, making it the perfect spot for your golf “destination vacation!” Get swept away on the King’s Links by the Sea course (604.952.0999), the only “British-style” fairway in the Lower Mainland; discover the lush greens of Cove Links executive nine hole course (604.946.1839), and find yourself comfortably at home on the Delta Golf Club (604.594.1414) course, boasting a friendly atmosphere and unique design. A visit to the Sunshine Woods Golf Centre (604.596.0533) brings family fun and the nearby Tsawwassen Golf & Country Club (604.943.2288) offers majestic views and lots of wildlife sightings. Also in Tsawwassen is the popular Beach Grove Golf Club (604.943.1155) with its championship course and idyllic gardens. With this many great options, you’ll want to stay and play them all!
Did you know? Delta gets more sun than any other Lower Mainland city, all year-round! Boundary Bay & Centennial Beach Boundary Bay is Delta’s primary waterfront attraction. It’s the perfect place for romantic walks, cycling and running, with large expanses of sand, sea and wetlands on Centennial Beach. Warm shallow waters and the park’s abundant bird life make this a wonderful spot for swimming, picnics, and strolls through the various nature trails. Relax by the water, have lunch at the small beach café and entertain the kids at the playground. The beach is also home to historic Cammidge House and has on-site volleyball and tennis courts, as well as a softball field. (Map 4, G6 – H5)

For the Birds! Situated on the Pacific Flyway, Delta is a bird migration hot spot. Numerous international designations recognize its importance to the shorebirds, ducks, geese, swans and songbirds that stop here to feed and rest on their long journeys. Boundary Bay, Roberts Bank and the Fraser River Estuary rank as the top Important Bird Areas in Canada: a global designation that attracts visitors from around the world. This means seeing up to 100,000 snow geese migrating in from Russia in fall, or flocks of High Arctic brant wintering at Beach Grove lagoon. Hundreds of thousands of western sandpipers pass through the area during migration, while about 50,000 dunlin spend the winter on Boundary Bay, along with blackbellied plover and sanderling. Dikes, marshes and fields around Delta are great places to see birds of prey, including owls, hawks, harriers, falcons and bald eagles, and Boundary Bay is the best place in Canada to see wintering birds of prey. Head to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island or join guided walks led by local experts in the Birds on the Bay Program. Enjoy strolling in Boundary Bay Regional Park or along the 16km (10 mile) dike beside the salt marshes and mud flats. And discover the largest great blue heron colony on the Pacific Northwest coast in a wooded bluff on the Tsawwassen First Nation lands beside the ferry causeway.

or three hot days in July, pro cycling racers from around the world gather in Delta for a chance to win the richest prize in Canadian cycling: $25,000! Occurring annually for the last 11 years, the Tour de Delta is a great weekend of fun and includes free entertainment and activities for the whole family. It’s an awesome three days of “leg-shaking” good times you won’t want to miss! Tour de Delta was introduced to the cycling community in 2001 with the inaugural event attracting more than 200 professional cyclists from across Canada, the U.S. and New Zealand. Since that time, with great weather, challenging courses and enthusiastic spectators, Tour de Delta has been a continued success. Tour de Delta is a member of BC Superweek: seven races in ten days of excellent cycling action! bcsuperweek.ca Tour de Delta Headquarters: Ladner Leisure Centre, 4600 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta 604.952.3545 | tourdedelta.com
Friday, July 8 | 5:00pm Have fun with the whole family at the brand new MK Delta Lands. This exciting event has a 1.2km (0.7 mile) loop around the Social Heart area of North Delta, allowing spectators to see athletes pass by 40-50 times. With a fast downhill section, sliding into a left-hand turn, you’ll see riders hit speeds of more than 70km/hr (44 miles/hr)! At the event’s finish, riders will have less than 100m (328 feet) to sprint across the line. France has nothing on this race!
Saturday, July 9 | 5:15pm
Sunday, July 10 | 9:00am The grueling White Spot Road Race winds through North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen. This challenging stage incorporates strength, strategy, precision and endurance, as racers corner at high speeds, take turns “pulling” at the front of pace lines and picking a tactical spot to break away from the crowd. The men’s race starts in North Delta and incorporates the flat, windy farmland of the Fraser River Delta before joining the women on the Tsawwassen circuit. Both men’s and women’s races end with a frantic sprint finish at Winskill Park.
Delta 2011 | visitorschoice.com
The excitement continues to climb as the fast and furious Brenco Criterium takes place in the historic fishing village of Ladner. This race features several laps on a short circuit with city streets closed to traffic. With high-speed cornering, straightaway sprints and dozens of sidewalk restaurants and cafés perfect for viewing, this race is a spectator-favourite.
Friday, July 8 & Saturday, July 9 Kids age 6 – 11 can “warm up” the Criterium course tracks for the pros in the North Delta and Ladner Kids Crits races.

DEAS ISLAND REGIONAL PARK A carefully restored Queen Anne-style house, Burrvilla, built in 1905, and a oneroom schoolhouse from 1909 are part of the attractions of Deas Island Regional Park. Lying between the shores of the Fraser River and Deas Slough, this woodland park is home to eagles, owls and other raptor birds, which can be seen perched in the tall cottonwood trees. A two-storey observation tower provides a panoramic view of the river. A stroll along the island trails leads to a beach near the west end where the Fraser River laps at the shoreline as large, oceangoing freight ships glide past. Map 1

MILLENNIUM TRAIL This walking and cycling trail follows a picturesque route along Deas Slough from Ferry Road to Deas Island. From Captain’s Cove marina, the trail leads along the waterfront, passing under the Deas Slough highway bridge before winding past the Marina Garden Estates. The path offers views of farmland as it heads along a dike to Deas Island Regional Park. Map 3, F13
NORTH DELTA WATERSHED PARK Watershed Park is Delta’s largest parcel of park reserve, and with 11km (7 miles) of forested trails and access to old service roads, the park is a daily highlight for local mountain bike enthusiasts, horseback riders and leisurely walkers. Part of this park’s ecotourism draw is the presence of artesian wells, which provide residents with a dependable water supply. Recent improvements to the park include the development of gravel trails, footbridge
Visit our cozy neighbourhood pub or beautiful, casual fine dining restaurant For a great time where we have a PASSION for GREAT FOOD and GREAT SERVICE. All meals prepared from scratch with freshest, finest, seasonal ingredients available. May-September: two heated patios overlooking the Marina.

crossings, interpretive signs and a promontory lookout with a clear view of Mud Bay, making this a perfect picnic spot. 11600 Kittson Parkway, North Delta. Map 1 BURNS BOG & THE DELTA NATURE RESERVE Covering nearly 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres), nearly 10 times the size of Vancouver’s Stanley Park, Burns Bog is the largest undeveloped urban wilderness in Canada. It is an Ecological Conservancy Area and is home to a number of
unique wildlife species, including the southern red-backed vole and the Pacific water shrew. There are also many unusual plants, including the flesh-eating sundew that feeds on insects, and a profusion of blueberries. Over 150 different species of birds and 28 species of animals have been recorded living in Burns Bog. Please note that the majority of Burns Bog is closed to the public, however the Delta Nature Reserve in North Delta covers a large portion of the bog and welcomes visitors for viewing and tours and has three loops of boardwalks and trails. A 90-minute hike takes you past a beaver dam and through a spirea meadow and a cedar grove. Delta Nature Reserve: 10388 Nordel Court, North Delta | 604.572.0373 | burnsbog.org Map 1
Tips & Tricks Follow these guidelines for great wildlife viewing: n Check the tide, as low tides take birds far from sight n Explore during quieter times, like early morning or late afternoon n Never let your dog chase birds or animals; for group trips leave Fido at home n Best of all, get out and enjoy Delta’s wealth of wildlife!

Get Outside! Getting Around in Delta Visitors’ Choice Delta maps cover the communities within Delta, plus nearby destinations that make Delta a convenient hub for visitors to British Columbia’s Lower Mainland and nearby points in the USA. Many visitors know that Delta is home to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, departure point for Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands (schedule information on page 17). But stop a while in Delta to see its distinct communities: Ladner (page 26) and Tsawwassen (page 25). Nearby Point Roberts, WA, (page 27) is on a point of land directly south of Tsawwassen. The area is accessible by rail, water and major highways in all directions, and is roughly 50 minutes from Vancouver and 20 minutes from the Vancouver International Airport. There is an airport for small planes near Boundary Bay in South Delta. Delta is surrounded by water on three sides. It was formed by silt from the Fraser River building up over hundreds of years, and is therefore a true “delta,” from which the community takes its name. It’s bounded by the Fraser River on the north, the US border and Boundary Bay on the south, the District of Surrey on the east, and the Strait of Georgia on the west, and by beauty all around.

However, racks are only available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so riders are reminded to be courteous and plan ahead when travelling with bikes. Call 604.953.3333 or visit coastmountainbus. com for more details. The George Massey Tunnel Bike Shuttle offers cyclists and their bikes transportation through the Massey Tunnel on Highway 99 south of Vancouver. Daily trips in both directions are available most days of the year, but call ahead to make sure. Shuttle 24-hour Information: 604.575.7020 & 604.271.0337 | th.gov.bc.ca

More to Explore Sunny Cultures
Tsawwassen
If you’re stopping by Tsawwassen for a few days, plan on being truly entertained with a host of arts and cultural events, from musical concerts to live theatre and everything in between. The area is the cultural centre and ancestral home of the Tsawwassen First Nation, a self-governing Coast Salish nation. This vibrant community thrives on these beautiful lands and brings a wealth of energetic enthusiasm, through arts and cultural, educational and economic initiatives. Tsawwassen is also known as the land of the sun and gets three days of sunshine for every one in Vancouver. To celebrate this sunny gift, the Tsawwassen Sun Festival is held annually on the first weekend in August during the BC Day long weekend. It’s great fun for the whole family, and includes a parade, children’s midway, antique fair, slow pitch tournament, BMX bike air show, main stage entertainment, fireworks, food vendors and much more! See page 8. And when the sun goes down you can enjoy free nights of fun and entertainment during Tsawwassen Outdoor Movie Nights. For more details, go to tsawwassenfirstnation.com and shoptsawwassen.com.

Tsawwassen, which means “land facing the sea” in Coast Salish, is appropriately named since it is also the BC Ferries Terminal for Vancouver Island. Located at the terminal’s entry point for travellers heading from the Lower Mainland to Victoria, Nanaimo, and the Southern Gulf Islands, is the stunning Tsawwassen Quay Market. The outdoors are brought inside with full-height windows, exposed wood beams, and a painted nautical chart of the BC coastline decorating the floor, making Tsawwassen Quay Market a truly West Coast experience and the perfect starting point for your journey. Walk aboard or drive your car onto the Greco-Roman Cuisine ferry – getting to the islands is half the fun, as the route offers a spectacular journey over clear water and “Serving Great Food Since 1979” through beautiful Open for Dinner Daily islands. On a sunny day, Licensed Premises take a walk on the deck Eat In or Take Out – you might see seals, Free Local Delivery killer whales or bald www.alfapizza.ca eagles.

Living on the rich land and sea resources of the area, Delta and Ladner were settled in the late 19th century by Coast Salish First Nations. Much later arrivals, like the pioneer brothers William and Thomas Ladner, saw sustenance in the soil where the Fraser River meets the sea. In 1873, on their return from the Cariboo gold rush, the Ladner brothers claimed 64 hectares (160 acres) each. William Ladner later donated property to build a wharf for farmers to ship their produce to nearby urban centres. Farmers loaded their agricultural produce and livestock onto steamboats for sale at markets in Victoria, Nanaimo, New Westminster, and eventually Vancouver. Over the years, Ladner’s Landing grew as a fishing village and service centre for the surrounding farms.

Point Roberts
Point Roberts Immediately south of Tsawwassen is the geographical anomaly of Point Roberts, Washington – one of only three areas in the US that, by land, can only be accessed through Canada. Open 24 hours a day, the border between Tsawwassen and Point Roberts is an international one, which means a passport or enhanced driving license is required. Identification for minor children will also be needed, plus proof that they are travelling with their parents’ consent if they are not your children. Be sure as well to check in with US border officials. Home to about 1500 year-round residents, Point Roberts was created in 1846 when the international boundary was set, separating the area from the rest of Washington state.
Naturally Beautiful Point Roberts is home to a large marina that offers easy access to the Gulf and San Juan Islands. If arriving by boat, be sure to check out the thousand-slip Point Roberts Marina Resort, central to Puget Sound and the Georgia Strait. Lighthouse Park, located on the southwest tip, offers panoramic views of the Georgia Strait and some of the best killer whale watching on the mainland in the summer. For birdwatchers, the peninsula is known for seabirds, loons, grebes, terns and jaegers. A moderate year-round climate with an abundance of sunshine is good for the garden, as anyone who has attended the Annual Point Roberts Garden Tour can attest. In addition, the area is perfect for biking, with plenty of trails to keep you busy, and has stunning giant clay cliffs—an impressive sight to say the least! Delta 2011 | visitorschoice.com
