Delta Museum and Archives Located in a stunning heritage building, the Delta Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history of the people and places that made the community what it is today. In addition, the Museum hosts the Delta Archives in a separate facility, which is a collection of records and materials, including over 20,000 photos, 800 maps and local newspapers dating back to 1902. Aboriginal settlers visited these lands on a seasonal basis, and later became permanent inhabitants.

Nicknamed “Isla Capeda” (Capeda Island) by Spanish explorer Lieutenant Francisco Eliza, the future Delta area is discovered by Europeans.

With a gold rush happening across BC, settlers make their way to Delta to search for their fortunes.

Did you know? Delta gets more sun than any other Lower Mainland city, all year-round! Boundary Bay & Centennial Beach Boundary Bay is Delta’s primary waterfront attraction. Warm shallow waters and the park’s abundant bird life make this a wonderful spot for swimming, picnics, and strolls through the various nature trails. Get Outside!

For the Birds! Situated on the Pacific Flyway, Delta is a bird migration hot spot. Numerous international designations recognize its importance to the shorebirds, ducks, geese, swans and songbirds that stop here to feed and rest on their long journeys. Boundary Bay, Roberts Bank and the Fraser River Estuary rank as the top Important Bird Areas in Canada: a global designation that attracts visitors from around the world. This means seeing up to 100,000 snow geese migrating in from Russia in fall, or flocks of High Arctic brant wintering at Beach Grove lagoon. Hundreds of thousands of western sandpipers pass through the area during migration, while about 50,000 dunlin spend the winter on Boundary Bay, along with blackbellied plover and sanderling. Dikes, marshes and fields around Delta are great places to see birds of prey, including owls, hawks, harriers, falcons and bald eagles, and Boundary Bay is the best place in Canada to see wintering birds of prey. Head to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island or join guided walks led by local experts in the Birds on the Bay Program. Enjoy strolling in Boundary Bay Regional Park or along the 16km (10 mile) dike beside the salt marshes and mud flats. And discover the largest great blue heron colony on the Pacific Northwest coast in a wooded bluff on the Tsawwassen First Nation lands beside the ferry causeway.

Wildlife Viewing Trips

Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area in the heart of Delta is a large wetland wilderness area conserved as wildlife habitat and the Delta Nature Reserve is the only location currently open to the public for viewing this specialized bog ecosystem with its unique plants such as Labrador tea and bog rosemary. This exciting event has a 1.2km (0.7 mile) loop around the Social Heart area of North Delta, allowing spectators to see athletes pass by 40-50 times. With a fast downhill section, sliding into a left-hand turn, you’ll see riders hit speeds of more than 70km/hr (44 miles/hr)! At the event’s finish, riders will have less than 100m (328 feet) to sprint across the line. France has nothing on this race!

Sunday, July 10 | 9:00am The grueling White Spot Road Race winds through North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen. This challenging stage incorporates strength, strategy, precision and endurance, as racers corner at high speeds, take turns “pulling” at the front of pace lines and picking a tactical spot to break away from the crowd. The men’s race starts in North Delta and incorporates the flat, windy farmland of the Fraser River Delta before joining the women on the Tsawwassen circuit. Both men’s and women’s races end with a frantic sprint finish at Winskill Park.

The excitement continues to climb as the fast and furious Brenco Criterium takes place in the historic fishing village of Ladner. This race features several laps on a short circuit with city streets closed to traffic. DEAS ISLAND REGIONAL PARK A carefully restored Queen Anne-style house, Burrvilla, built in 1905, and a oneroom schoolhouse from 1909 are part of the attractions of Deas Island Regional Park. Lying between the shores of the Fraser River and Deas Slough, this woodland park is home to eagles, owls and other raptor birds, which can be seen perched in the tall cottonwood trees. A two-storey observation tower provides a panoramic view of the river. A stroll along the island trails leads to a beach near the west end where the Fraser River laps at the shoreline as large, oceangoing freight ships glide past. Map 1

MILLENNIUM TRAIL This walking and cycling trail follows a picturesque route along Deas Slough from Ferry Road to Deas Island. From Captain’s Cove marina, the trail leads along the waterfront, passing under the Deas Slough highway bridge before winding past the Marina Garden Estates. The path offers views of farmland as it heads along a dike to Deas Island Regional Park. Map 3, F13

NORTH DELTA WATERSHED PARK Watershed Park is Delta’s largest parcel of park reserve, and with 11km (7 miles) of forested trails and access to old service roads, the park is a daily highlight for local mountain bike enthusiasts, horseback riders and leisurely walkers. Part of this park’s ecotourism draw is the presence of artesian wells, which provide residents with a dependable water supply. Map 1 BURNS BOG & THE DELTA NATURE RESERVE Covering nearly 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres), nearly 10 times the size of Vancouverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Stanley Park, Burns Bog is the largest undeveloped urban wilderness in Canada. It is an Ecological Conservancy Area and is home to a number of

unique wildlife species, including the southern red-backed vole and the Pacific water shrew. There are also many unusual plants, including the flesh-eating sundew that feeds on insects, and a profusion of blueberries. Over 150 different species of birds and 28 species of animals have been recorded living in Burns Bog. Please note that the majority of Burns Bog is closed to the public, however the Delta Nature Reserve in North Delta covers a large portion of the bog and welcomes visitors for viewing and tours and has three loops of boardwalks and trails. Get Outside! Getting Around in Delta Visitors’ Choice Delta maps cover the communities within Delta, plus nearby destinations that make Delta a convenient hub for visitors to British Columbia’s Lower Mainland and nearby points in the USA. Many visitors know that Delta is home to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, departure point for Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands (schedule information on page 17). But stop a while in Delta to see its distinct communities: Ladner (page 26) and Tsawwassen (page 25). Nearby Point Roberts, WA, (page 27) is on a point of land directly south of Tsawwassen. The area is accessible by rail, water and major highways in all directions, and is roughly 50 minutes from Vancouver and 20 minutes from the Vancouver International Airport. There is an airport for small planes near Boundary Bay in South Delta. Delta is surrounded by water on three sides. It was formed by silt from the Fraser River building up over hundreds of years, and is therefore a true “delta,” from which the community takes its name. It’s bounded by the Fraser River on the north, the US border and Boundary Bay on the south, the District of Surrey on the east, and the Strait of Georgia on the west, and by beauty all around.

The flat roads, trails and dykes of Delta offer some of the best biking in the Greater Vancouver region. Here’s a few suggestions on how to get your beloved bi-ped to this great terrain. TransLink makes it easy to take your bike with you by offering racks and space on the bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus and their West Coast Express rail line and even have bike lockers at many convenient locations. Mountain Biking It’s not just the Tour de Delta that brings in the masses—Delta has an excellent park, perfect for getting your “fitness on!” With its various sloping grades and diverse terrain, Delta’s Watershed Park is a great place to learn new skills and brush up on techniques to improve your downhill riding. Living on the rich land and sea resources of the area, Delta and Ladner were settled in the late 19th century by Coast Salish First Nations. Much later arrivals, like the pioneer brothers William and Thomas Ladner, saw sustenance in the soil where the Fraser River meets the sea. In 1873, on their return from the Cariboo gold rush, the Ladner brothers claimed 64 hectares (160 acres) each. William Ladner later donated property to build a wharf for farmers to ship their produce to nearby urban centres. Farmers loaded their agricultural produce and livestock onto steamboats for sale at markets in Victoria, Nanaimo, New Westminster, and eventually Vancouver. Over the years, Ladnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Landing grew as a fishing village and service centre for the surrounding farms.

Point Roberts

Point Roberts Immediately south of Tsawwassen is the geographical anomaly of Point Roberts, Washington – one of only three areas in the US that, by land, can only be accessed through Canada. Open 24 hours a day, the border between Tsawwassen and Point Roberts is an international one, which means a passport or enhanced driving license is required. Identification for minor children will also be needed, plus proof that they are travelling with their parents’ consent if they are not your children. Be sure as well to check in with US border officials. Home to about 1500 year-round residents, Point Roberts was created in 1846 when the international boundary was set, separating the area from the rest of Washington state.

Naturally Beautiful Point Roberts is home to a large marina that offers easy access to the Gulf and San Juan Islands. If arriving by boat, be sure to check out the thousand-slip Point Roberts Marina Resort, central to Puget Sound and the Georgia Strait. Lighthouse Park, located on the southwest tip, offers panoramic views of the Georgia Strait and some of the best killer whale watching on the mainland in the summer. For birdwatchers, the peninsula is known for seabirds, loons, grebes, terns and jaegers. A moderate year-round climate with an abundance of sunshine is good for the garden, as anyone who has attended the Annual Point Roberts Garden Tour can attest.
