Be(ar) Careful!

W

histler is located in prime black bear country so whether you’re enjoying a walk along a local trail or hiking the backcountry, you may encounter black bears.

Whistler Winter/Spring 2011/12 | visitorschoice.com

Black bears hibernate through the winter and are most active from mid-March to November. When awake, their constant search for food may draw them into unexpected, populated urban areas. Seeing a bear in its natural habitat can be a memorable experience, but please respect and help protect our bears. Being aware of bears and following a few simple guidelines can help ensure that any encounters with bears are positive and conflict free.

4

n Be prepared. Learn as much as you can about bear behaviour before venturing into bear country and remember you might encounter them in unexpected places. n Be aware of your surroundings and scan the area for signs of recent bear activity. If you see tracks, scat, tree markings or a natural food source, be extremely cautious and consider an alternate route or postpone your trip. n Never feed a bear, either intentionally or unintentionally. Properly dispose of garbage, wherever possible, in a bear-proof container and — if camping — ensure that unattended

campsites remain free of bear attractants, such as food. n Respect all bears (and other wildlife!). Give them plenty of space and do not approach them. No one should be encouraged to feed, pet or pose for a photo with a bear. If you want to take pictures, use a telephoto lens from a safe distance. n Never stop on the side of the road to photograph a bear, even if others are doing so. Many bears lose their lives each year as a result of preventable run-ins with people and their vehicles. Call 604.905.BEAR (2327) to report any and all bear conflicts.

The Whistler Get Bear Smart Society (GBS) and Bear Aware BC champion progressive management policies that reduce both the number of human-bear conflicts and the number of bears destroyed. For more information visit bearsmart.com or bearaware.bc.ca, and to report a conflict or bear attractants, such as unsecured garbage, call 604.905.BEAR (2327). Remember to always be alert and “bear smart” in bear country. With your cooperation, bears and people can happily coexist. “The Bears Thank You!”

Vancouver/Garibaldi is nominated for the 1976 Olympic Games, but the IOC won’t let the same country host the Games twice in the same year (Montreal would host the 1976 Summer Games).

The Resort Municipality of Whistler is created (the first of its kind in Canada!) to promote tourism in the area.

After successfully combining Whistler and Blackcomb, the mountain becomes the first North American Ski Resort to host over two million skiers in one season.

From February 12 to March 19, Whistler hosts the world during the XXI Olympic and X Paralympic Winter Games.

Cross-Country Skiing

12

Heli-Skiing Ready to take on something more challenging? Why not head up the hill in your very own helicopter tour! Your friends will definitely be jealous of your amazing personal guided tour through the backcountry terrain, criss-crossing down crystallized snow barely touched by man. Probably a year’s worth of bragging rights.

Looking for a gentler alternative to the vertical drop of the mountains? Try cross-country skiing (also called Nordic skiing) around pristine Lost Lake and the valley country. This graceful activity will have you gliding in the sun through almost 130km (80 miles) of “track-set” trails while you get a great workout. Explore Whistler’s prime crosscountry ski areas: Lost Lake, Valley Trail and Callaghan Valley. Ski rentals and tours available for all skill levels.

Tourism Whistler / Steve Rogers

Whistler Sliding Centre Take a self-guided tour through the official 2010 Winter Olympic venue for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton competitions. See for yourself why this lightning-fast 1450m (0.9 mile) track is one of the world’s best facilities of its kind. Boasting a vertical drop of 152m (499 feet) and no less than 16 corners, the complex was built over a two-year period just in time for the Olympic Games. 4910 Glacier Lane | 604.964.0040 | whistlerslidingcentre.com

This ancient method of travel is tons of fun and allows you easy access to previously unreachable parts of forested areas. With two web-like “shoes” strapped underneath your winter boots, you’ll be trekking over deep pow in no time. You’ll wonder how you ever got along without them!

With varying lessons available, every skill level is covered, from beginner to advanced, child, youth and adult, as well as accessibility-oriented adaptive lessons. Mountain Safety

W

histlerBlackcomb’s Mountain Safety Team has been steadily growing over the years. You can’t miss the full-time and volunteer members in their bright yellow jackets, patrolling the hills to keep you safe. Their overall mission is to ensure all guests and employees are aware of the Alpine Responsibility Code and adhere to its guidelines. Specifically, they are looking out for reckless behaviour such as skiers and boarders travelling too fast. You can help the Mountain Safety Team by understanding the rules and responsibilities attached to being on the hill, like riding in control, travelling at safe speeds in “slow zones” and by using common sense and exercising courtesy. In addition, these tips will help you have a fun, safe experience on the hill: and regulations could result in loss of lift privileges—or worse! n Be aware of the weather. Mountain conditions can change quickly and it’s important to react accordingly. When there is falling snow and/or foggy conditions, reduce your speed or stop altogether. n Always ride in control and yield to others. If you can’t stop or turn quickly to avoid objects and people in your path, you’re probably riding too fast and should reduce your speed. n Dress warmly. Frostbite is a serious condition and can develop quickly. Bring

extra layers and limit your skin exposure when the temperature drops. If your skin begins to turn white, go inside immediately. n Avoid sunburn and stay hydrated. Alpine conditions and physical activity can increase your exposure to dehydration. Remember to always drink lots of water, wear sunscreen and goggles, as well as a hat to avoid burning your skin. n Think visibility—always! When stopping on the hill, make sure you are out of the way of other riders, but still visible to them. Avoid stopping on rollovers and around blind corners.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the Mountain Safety Team and the yellow Alpine Responsibility Code signs. After all, both are there to ensure the safety of you and everyone else on the hill.

Whistler Winter/Spring 2011/12 | visitorschoice.com

n Ski/ride with a buddy and identify meeting points in case you become separated. Make sure your fellow riders know how to find the meeting location. n Carry a whistle and be cautious. n Be extra careful when skiing/riding in treed areas. Tree wells can be very dangerous because of loose-packed snow. n Stay in bounds. No matter how tempting that fresh snow may be, it’s vitally important to stay away from the closed trails. Often these trails are closed for your safety because of potential dangers they pose. Failure to follow signs

Après Whistler

here’s an old saying that once you’ve mastered the Whistler slopes, you’ll never feel the same at any other resort… The same is true of Whistler nightlife.

Picture it: you’ve mastered the backcountry, zip-lined your way through the snowy forest with ease, soared high above the pristine mountains, encased in glass. Now, it’s the end of the day and you’re pumped to recount your glory stories with some good friends in a great atmosphere. It’s Whistler après and you’ve arrived. Luckily, you have definitely come to the right place, because in this town there’s so many nightlife options, fun is limited only by your imagination. With everything almost in walking distance of each other and your hotel, you’re also ensured a safe night out with no chance of a parking ticket! Fabulous!
