Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre

Perched proud and tall on a gentle rock rise in Whistler, BC sits the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, the end result of years of planning culminating in a beautiful site where “mountains, rivers and people” can meet and learn about the rich histories and cultures of both the Lil’wat and Squamish First Nations. Wander through the great hall to recapture the spirit of traditional practices still being used today, including canoe building, cedar basket weaving, storytelling and narrative art. Creekside & Franz’s Trail Just a short five-minute drive from Whistler Village south on the Sea to Sky highway, you’ll find Creekside. Dubbed the “original Whistler,” the area is a favourite with locals and those looking to find an alternative to the busy main Village area. Having recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation, the historic community is now a vibrant and enriched area boasting modern facilities and amenities, as well as exceptional shopping. FYI Squamish & Lil’wat First Nations were the first inhabitants of Whistler.
1860s: British Naval Officers arrive and name the area “London Mountain.”
1900s: Resident trappers, loggers and miners dub the area “Whistler” after the Hoary Marmots’ shrill cry.
1914: Myrtle and Alex Philip build Rainbow Lodge where tourists can fish for trout.
1960: Several Vancouver businessmen create the Garibaldi Olympic Development Association to make Whistler a future Winter Olympic Games site.
1962: Franz Wilhelmsen, president of Garibaldi Lifts Limited, endeavours to build and operate the first ski lifts on Whistler. But the area did not yet have electricity, roads or sewers!
1966: On February 15, Whistler Mountain officially opens for skiing! Visitors got to the mountaintop via a four-person gondola, double chairlift and two T-bars.
1968: Vancouver/Garibaldi is nominated for the 1976 Olympic Games, but the IOC won’t let the same country host the Games twice in the same year (Montreal would host the 1976 Summer Games).
1975: The Resort Municipality of Whistler is created (the first of its kind in Canada!) to promote tourism in the area.
1978: Construction begins on the 53 acres of land that will eventually become the current Whistler Village.
1980:
1999: After successfully combining Whistler and Blackcomb, the mountain becomes the first North American Ski Resort to host over two million skiers in one season.
2003: Whistler/Vancouver wins the 2010 Winter Olympic Games bid, and begins preparations to host the events.

Looking for a gentler alternative to the vertical drop of the mountains? Try cross-country skiing (also called Nordic skiing) around the pristine Whistler lake and valley country. This graceful activity will have you gliding in the sun through almost 130km (80 miles) of “track-set” trails while you get a great workout. histler is located in prime black bear country so whether you’re enjoying a walk along a local trail or hiking the backcountry, you may encounter black bears. Black bears hibernate through the winter and are most active from mid-March to November. When awake, their constant search for food may draw them into unexpected, populated urban areas. Seeing a bear in its natural habitat can be a memorable experience, but please respect and help protect our bears. Being aware of bears and following a few simple guidelines can help ensure that any encounters with bears are positive and conflict free. campsites remain free of bear attractants, such as food. n Respect all bears (and other wildlife!). Give them plenty of space and do not approach them. No one should be encouraged to feed, pet or pose for a photo with a bear. If you want to take pictures, use a telephoto lens from a safe distance. n Never stop on the side of the road to photograph a bear, even if others are doing so. Many bears lose their lives each year as a result of preventable run-ins with people and their vehicles. Call 604.905.BEAR (2327) to report any and all bear conflicts.

n Be aware of the weather. Mountain conditions can change quickly and it’s important to react accordingly. When there is falling snow and/or foggy conditions, reduce your speed or stop altogether. n Always ride in control and yield to others. If you can’t stop or turn quickly to avoid objects and people in your path, you’re probably riding too fast and should reduce your speed. n Dress warmly. Frostbite is a serious condition and can develop quickly. Bring extra layers and limit your skin exposure when the temperature drops. If your skin begins to turn white, go inside immediately. n Avoid sunburn and stay hydrated. Alpine conditions

Often these trails are closed for your safety because of potential dangers they pose. Failure to follow signs and regulations could result in loss of lift privileges—or worse!

You can’t miss the full-time and volunteer members in their bright yellow jackets patrolling the hills to keep them safe. Their overall mission is to ensure all guests and employees are aware of the Alpine Responsibility Code and adhere to its guidelines. Specifically, they are looking out for reckless behaviour such as skiers and boarders travelling too fast. You can help the Mountain Safety Team by understanding the rules and responsibilities attached to being on the hill, like riding in control, travelling at safe speeds in “slow zones” and by using common sense and exercising courtesy.
