Highlights

in your schedule to stop in at these awesome sites. You definitely don’t want to miss a single one! PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola Rising to a thrilling height of 436m (1427 feet) above the valley floor, this 11-minute ride spanning the mountaintops from Blackcomb to Whistler will leave you breathless. Whether you’re heading to a mountaintop meal, starting out on a wilderness hike or just want to marvel at the spectacular view, this world record-breaking trip is sure to inspire. The PEAK 2 PEAK currently holds records for: longest unsupported span (3.024 km / 1.88 miles); highest vertical lift (436m / 1427 feet) and world’s longest continuous lift system. Yeah, it’s pretty impressive alright! 4545 Blackcomb Way | 1.800.766.0449 | whistlerblackcomb.com (Map 10) Photo: Whistler Blackcomb / Paul Morrison

Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre

10

Perched proud and tall on a gentle rock rise in Whistler, BC sits the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, the end result of years of planning culminating in a beautiful site where “mountains, rivers and people” can meet and learn about the rich histories and cultures of both the Lil’wat and Squamish First Nations. Wander through the great hall to recapture the spirit of traditional practices still being used today, including canoe building, cedar basket weaving, storytelling and narrative art. The Centre features guided tours, regular workshops, performance events as well as a thoughtfully curated gift shop. 4584 Blackcomb Way | 1.866.441.SLCC (7522) | slcc.ca (Map 7, location 75) Photo: SLCC / Gary Fiegehen

Creekside & Franz’s Trail Just a short five-minute drive from Whistler Village south on the Sea to Sky highway, you’ll find Creekside. Dubbed the “original Whistler,” the area is a favourite with locals and those looking to find an alternative to the busy main Village area. Having recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation, the historic community is now a vibrant and enriched area boasting modern facilities and amenities, as well as exceptional shopping. Creekside also has an abundance of parking spaces and most importantly, the only gas station in the immediate area. See Map 8. Photo: Tourism Whistler / Steve Rogers

FYI Squamish & Lil’wat First Nations were the first inhabitants of Whistler.

1860s: British Naval Officers arrive and name the area “London Mountain.”

1900s: Resident trappers, loggers and miners dub the area “Whistler” after the Hoary Marmots’ shrill cry.

1914: Myrtle and Alex Philip build Rainbow Lodge where tourists can fish for trout.

1960: Several Vancouver businessmen create the Garibaldi Olympic Development Association to make Whistler a future Winter Olympic Games site.

1962: Franz Wilhelmsen, president of Garibaldi Lifts Limited, endeavours to build and operate the first ski lifts on Whistler. But the area did not yet have electricity, roads or sewers!

1966: On February 15, Whistler Mountain officially opens for skiing! Visitors got to the mountaintop via a four-person gondola, double chairlift and two T-bars.

1968: Vancouver/Garibaldi is nominated for the 1976 Olympic Games, but the IOC won’t let the same country host the Games twice in the same year (Montreal would host the 1976 Summer Games).

1975: The Resort Municipality of Whistler is created (the first of its kind in Canada!) to promote tourism in the area.

1978: Construction begins on the 53 acres of land that will eventually become the current Whistler Village.

1980:

1999: After successfully combining Whistler and Blackcomb, the mountain becomes the first North American Ski Resort to host over two million skiers in one season.

2003: Whistler/Vancouver wins the 2010 Winter Olympic Games bid, and begins preparations to host the events.

2008: Whistler’s Peak 2 Peak gondola opens. It boasts the world’s largest unsupported lift span, measuring about 3 km (1.8 miles) long.

Get Outside! Whistler

Cross-Country Skiing

Whistler Winter 2010/11 | visitorschoice.com

Looking for a gentler alternative to the vertical drop of the mountains? Try cross-country skiing (also called Nordic skiing) around the pristine Whistler lake and valley country. This graceful activity will have you gliding in the sun through almost 130km (80 miles) of “track-set” trails while you get a great workout. Explore Whistler’s prime cross country ski areas: Lost Lake, Valley Trail and Callaghan Valley. Ski rentals and tours available for all skill levels. See chart on page 18 for tour operators.

now falling from above and landing underfoot is the perfect time to be outdoors. And of course, after the world watched in 2010 everyone knows there’s practically no better place to be during winter than in the heart of the Whistler Mountains. So grab your board, skis, tubes, sleds and everything else you need for winter sports, cause this town is ready to get you moving!

Heli-Skiing

Dog Sledding Can you say “mush?” For a fun activity the whole family will enjoy, try the proud Canadian tradition of dog sledding. Even better, there’s no experience required! You only need the desire to be outdoors gliding through the snowy forest, led by expert guides. Enjoy brisk air rushing past as you experience one of the oldest travel methods around with well-trained Alaskan Huskies. Now that’s an awesome winter activity, not to mention tons of fun and of course, you get to spend some time with friendly puppies! Very cute. See chart on page 18 for tour operators.

Zoom Ziplines

Whistler’s only side by side zipline!

Ready to take on the backcountry? Why not head up the hill in your very own helicopter tour! Your friends back home will definitely be jealous when you tell them about your amazing personal guided tour through the backcountry terrain, criss-crossing down crystallized snow barely touched by man. Probably worth about a year of bragging rights. See chart on page 18 for tour operators.

Get Outside! Whistler Snowmobiling Canadian Snowmobile Adventures

If you’re seeking adventure in the snow, look no further than the lightning-fast speed of snowmobiling. With no driver’s licence required, this outdoor sport is suitable for the whole family! The only experience you need is the desire to ride through snowy forests and enjoy lots of laughs with good friends. Take a guided tour (beginner to advanced levels available) with one of several local tour operators, some even include mountainside dining. See chart on page 18 for tour operators.

Snowshoeing Tired of sinking in the deep winter snow? Well, snowshoeing is the perfect answer! With two web-like “shoes” strapped underneath your winter boots, you’ll be trekking over deep pow in no time. This ancient method of travel is tons of fun and allows you easy access to previously unreachable parts of forested areas. You’ll wonder how you ever got along without them! Take a self-guided tour through the official 2010 Winter Olympic venue for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton competitions. Boasting a vertical drop of 152m (499 feet) and no less than 16 corners, the complex was built over a two-year period just in time for the Olympic Games and will soon feature a Public Sport Experience Program through the winter months. 4910 Glacier Lane | 604.964.0040 | whistlerslidingcentre.com

Being surrounded by superb scenery does wonders for the soul and it’s easy to see this influence by stepping into any one of Whistler’s surprisingly many art galleries. What was once a souvenir affair has now turned into a serious movement, bringing international attention to the area as a place for both artists to thrive and aficionados to complement their collections. In addition to timeless, traditional landscapes, is a mix of edgy, contemporary subject matter and fresh mixed-media concepts, courtesy of the growing modern scene on the Sea to Sky highway. Keep an eye out for internationally sought-after artists living and working in Whistler and find some of the area’s best artistic treasures at the wealth of photography studios and art galleries around.

BE(AR) careful!

W

histler is located in prime black bear country so whether you’re enjoying a walk along a local trail or hiking the backcountry, you may encounter black bears. Black bears hibernate through the winter and are most active from mid-March to November. When awake, their constant search for food may draw them into unexpected, populated urban areas. Seeing a bear in its natural habitat can be a memorable experience, but please respect and help protect our bears. Being aware of bears and following a few simple guidelines can help ensure that any encounters with bears are positive and conflict free. campsites remain free of bear attractants, such as food. n Respect all bears (and other wildlife!). Give them plenty of space and do not approach them. No one should be encouraged to feed, pet or pose for a photo with a bear. If you want to take pictures, use a telephoto lens from a safe distance. n Never stop on the side of the road to photograph a bear, even if others are doing so. Many bears lose their lives each year as a result of preventable run-ins with people and their vehicles. Call 604.905.BEAR (2327) to report any and all bear conflicts.

The Whistler Get Bear Smart Society (GBS) and Bear Aware BC, champion progressive management policies that reduce both the number of human-bear conflicts and the number of bears destroyed. For more information visit bearsmart.com or bearaware.bc.ca, and to report a conflict or bear attractants, such as unsecured garbage, call 604.905.BEAR (2327). Remember to always be alert and “bear smart” in bear country. With your cooperation, bears and people can happily coexist. “The Bears Thank You!”

Whistler Winter 2010/11 | visitorschoice.com

n Be prepared. Learn as much as you can about bear behaviour before venturing into bear country and remember you might encounter them in unexpected places. n Be aware of your surroundings and scan the area for signs of recent bear activity. If you see tracks, scat, tree markings or a natural food source, be extremely cautious and consider an alternate route or postpone your trip. n Never feed a bear, either intentionally or unintentionally. Properly dispose of garbage, wherever possible, in a bear-proof container and — if camping — ensure that unattended

Mountain Safety

n Be aware of the weather. Mountain conditions can change quickly and it’s important to react accordingly. When there is falling snow and/or foggy conditions, reduce your speed or stop altogether. n Always ride in control and yield to others. If you can’t stop or turn quickly to avoid objects and people in your path, you’re probably riding too fast and should reduce your speed. n Dress warmly. Frostbite is a serious condition and can develop quickly. Bring extra layers and limit your skin exposure when the temperature drops. If your skin begins to turn white, go inside immediately. n Avoid sunburn and stay hydrated. Alpine conditions

Be sure to keep an eye out for the Mountain Safety Team and the yellow Alpine Responsibility Code signs. After all, both are there to ensure the safety of you and everyone else on the hill.

and physical activity can increase your exposure to dehydration. Remember to always drink lots of water, wear sunscreen a and goggles, as well as a hat to avoid burning your skin. n Think visibility—always! When stopping on the hill, make sure you are out of the way of other riders, but still visible to them. Avoid stopping on rollovers and around blind corners.

Whistler Winter 2010/11 | visitorschoice.com

n Ski/ride with a buddy and identify meeting points in case you become separated. Make sure your fellow riders know how to find the meeting location. n Carry a whistle and be cautious. n Be extra careful when skiing/riding in treed areas. Tree wells can be very dangerous because of loose-packed snow. n Stay in bounds. No matter how tempting that fresh snow may be, it’s vitally important to stay away from the closed trails. Often these trails are closed for your safety because of potential dangers they pose. Failure to follow signs and regulations could result in loss of lift privileges—or worse!

histler-Blackcomb’s Mountain Safety Team has been steadily growing for the past ten years. You can’t miss the full-time and volunteer members in their bright yellow jackets patrolling the hills to keep them safe. Their overall mission is to ensure all guests and employees are aware of the Alpine Responsibility Code and adhere to its guidelines. Specifically, they are looking out for reckless behaviour such as skiers and boarders travelling too fast. You can help the Mountain Safety Team by understanding the rules and responsibilities attached to being on the hill, like riding in control, travelling at safe speeds in “slow zones” and by using common sense and exercising courtesy. In addition, these tips will help you have a fun, safe experience on the hill:

here’s an old saying that once you’ve mastered the Whistler slopes, you’ll never feel the same skiing anywhere else again… The same is true of Whistler nightlife. Picture it: you’ve mastered the backcountry, ziplined your way through the snowy forest with ease, soared high above the pristine mountains, encased in glass. Now, it’s the end of the day and you’re pumped to recount your glory stories with some good friends in a great atmosphere. It’s Whistler at night and you’ve arrived. Luckily, you have definitely come to the right place, because in this town there’s so many nightlife options, fun is limited only by your imagination. With everything almost in walking distance of each other and your hotel, you’re also ensured a safe night out with no chance of a parking ticket! Fabulous! Attracting international talent has never been a problem for Whistler and with the global

community visiting the region in increasing numbers every season, the nightlife scene has only gotten hotter. Every week hosts a different set of live bands and DJ’s ready to take on the energy and vibe of the ever-growing party crowds. One thing that’s true about Whistler is that this town knows how to party and they do it with style. The cosy town features almost a dozen proper nightclubs, at least two dozen lounge/ pub style establishments and a ton of restaurants open late into the evening, the après options are never-ending. So grab your friends and head out for an unforgettable night, whether it’s Friday, Saturday or any day of the week, really, cause there’s always a party waiting to happen and you’re the perfect person to get it started.
