Cornerstone Financial Strategies is also involved in health care for our clients — not their physical health, but rather their financial health. The language of medical health care applies to much of the work we do. When we first meet clients, we listen, look for symptoms, take the temperature of their current financial

health, then diagnose any areas of concern.

As “physicians of finance,” the Cornerstone ensemble team of advisors may prescribe actions and possible solutions to stabilize and improve our clients’ overall financial health. Sometimes a healthier lifestyle change is needed — perhaps a “spending diet.” Sometimes we refer to specialists for legal or tax planning. Make the Call

Don't Miss a Beat Team at Franciscan Health System The Make the Call Don’t Miss a Beat team at Franciscan Health System has a simple but important goal.

“Our mission is to spread a two-part message about women and heart attack symptoms to the underserved populations through our own efforts, as well as those of our community partners,” wrote Franciscan nominator Scott Thompson. “Our goal is to share this lifesaving knowledge with women of all demographics throughout the Northwest, including the underserved from a variety of cultural settings, (many of whom) do not speak English.

Indeed, one of the group’s major achievements was to post campaign flyers on the Franciscan website in 12 different languages – English, Spanish, Cambodian, Korean, Russian, Ukrainian, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Chamorro, Samoan, Somali and Simplified Chinese. Again, it may seem like a simple step, but the move is a cost-effective use of grant dollars for reaching low health literacy populations in the Northwest and all over the world.

The cost of translation was a mere $120 per language and, according to the Make the Call Don’t Miss a Beat team, “we now have a sustainable message from which multitudes of people can benefit.”

The flyers have also been shared with the Office of Women’s Health to maximize the resource’s reach — and that’s not the only work within the community that the team has undertaken. The group has made a point to partner with any healthrelated, cultural, religious, community service or religious organization that was willing to assist Franciscan in spreading the message.

To date, the group has 40 community partners, including AHA Go Red Ambassadors, Korean Women’s Association, Samoan National Nurses Association, Molina Health Care, Muckleshoot Indian Tribal Health, Heart Truth Champions, Lakewood Community Center, Buckley Fire Department, Mercy

Housing and WomenHeart, to name several.

Asked about the most rewarding health care successes this group has been involved with, the answer, again, was simple: saving lives.

“An overarching goal of (the translated flyer) campaign was to disseminate information in a way that is long lasting and will make a difference in someone’s life, the results of which are not always immediately measurable,” Thompson said.

And while the ladies of the Make the Call Don’t Miss a Beat team come from diverse backgrounds, they all come together because of the importance of women’s health awareness. As a Health Care Champion for 2013, the team continues to bring its message into a higher profile.

“Thank you,” they said, “for the opportunity to present this amazing project of the heart!”

Dental Award

Puyallup Valley Dental Care By now, it’s a very, very old joke about folks dreading the dentist, but the stigma endures because, well, some folks still dread the dentist.

Puyallup Valley Dental Care’s entire philosophy revolves around knocking that wall down on the very first visit.

“I think the first and foremost thing that comes to mind is that, in our entire practice — whether it be our patients, our vendors, our staff, whoever walks in — our intent and mission is for them to leave feeling better than they did when they came in,” said Heidi Blodgett, the clinic’s marketing manager. “RIght from the top, the doctor is just amazingly genuine in his interest in people and what they do, how they do it, how they’re bettering they’re lives.

“He shares people’s stories,” Blodgett continued.

“Every new patient, he posts a little clip about them on the wall, and every staff member gets to know a little bit about their story. And that level of caring is contagious. Our whole office gets into it. We truly care about the true essence of who people are, what they do, what inspires them, why they’re there. It’s not just about their mouth. It’s about their whole being.”

The focus on personalized care and attention is doubled when it comes to comfort, added Blodgett.

“Instead of calling our rooms ‘operatories,’ we refer to them as ‘suites,’” she said. “We try to create a spa environment, so when patients come in, they’re given a full tour of the office. Everything’s digital.

It’s just really high tech, state-of-the-art, and when they go to their suite, they are really just made comfortable. There’s a massage pad. They’re offered a hot towel. They look out to a garden that (CEO) Dr. (Steven) Urback tends to personally. It’s really kind of a serene environment. The comfort is ultimate. We want them to forget they’re at a dental appointment, because that’s no one’s favorite thing.”

a back seat, of course. Perhaps nowhere is that more visible than in the clinic’s participation in the Puyallup Dental Van project. The clinic, using a fully equipped two-chair dental van, made its first visit to Firgrove Elementary in 2003; at the time, no dental care was available at free or reduced fees anywhere east of Tacoma.

Puyallup Valley Dental provided six days of dental care at Firgrove Elementary that year for students who would otherwise have not had it. The second year, the program was expanded to include Stewart Elementary School, and Hunt Elementary

was added in the fourth. Now, in the project’s 10th year, students are being transported in from other schools, extending the positive impact districtwide. Each year, the clinic has provided over $50,000 worth of dental care at no charge to Puyallup School District students.

Puyallup Valley Dental’s philanthropy isn’t restricted to the Dental Van project, either. The office has an annual budget for providing dental treatment in the office for those who cannot afford all or part of their care. In 2012 alone, for example, the clinic donated $13, 333.37 in dental services.

Emergency Services Award

Yolanda Duralde, M.D.,

Medical director of CAID – Child Abuse Intervention Department, MultiCare Health System Yolanda Duralde, the medical director of MultiCare Health System’s Child Abuse Intervention Department, comes from a family of physicians.

Duralde said that her role in helping treat the unfortunate victims of child abuse is nothing more than community service.

With a father and three brothers who are doctors and a mother who’s a nurse, it’s no wonder that she grew up with the desire and resolve to help those in medical need.

“I think it’s part of being an aid or helper to the greater community,” she said. “The effects of child abuse are felt by the whole community, and it takes the whole community to respond.

That’s always what’s attracted me to this kind of work.”

Years of training and experience — including three years in Oregon at a clinic for migrant workers, where her Spanish speaking skills were key — helped shape Duralde into the awardwinning, multifaceted physician she is today.

And Duralde wields all the skills in her repertoire every day while working to help children who have been the victims of abuse. Duralde and the CAID staff work to reduce the traumatization of these potentially fragile, at-risk children and their families, facilitating a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to prevention, investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse.

“What we feel like is that it’s very important to intervene at an early stage and try to prevent child abuse,” Duralde said. “But if child abuse occurs, we need to catch it early and help all the people involved, because we know it has long-term effects well into adulthood. It makes a huge difference in terms of people’s wellbeing and their medical problems, so we’d have much healthier citizens, if we didn’t have to deal with the effects (of child abuse).”

To that end, Duralde lists the formation of Childrens Advocacy Center of Pierce County, located on the Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Health Center campus, as both one of her greatest achievements and one of the greatest achievements of the MultiCare organization as a whole.

The center offers not only medical treatment, but also psychosocial support, legal advocacy and crisis intervention services for victims and their families. The facility also works closely with law enforcement and other investigative agencies to help bring perpetrators of abuse to justice, while simultaneously providing a safe and protective environment for the children who are victims.

“Being from a family of physicians deinitely impacted how I think about giving back and wanting to help as much as possible,” Duralde said. “That has been basically how I grew up and how my family has always thought. To me, it seems normal to interact with a bigger team and try to make your community as good as it can possibly be.”

Military Service Award

Madigan Puyallup

Community Medical Home Francis Bannister, group practice manager of Madigan Puyallup Community Medical Home, wasn’t one to hide his excitement about his team being named a 2013 Health Care Champion.

“It’s an honor,” he said. “We’re a small team that’s making a big impact in the military community, so it’s very exciting.”

And why were they able to earn the distinction? For one thing, by trying something new. As part of an Army Surgeon General transformational initiative to refocus care given to military families, Madigan Puyallup Community Medical Home is constantly striving to improve the way its patients’ medical needs are met.

“We’re one of the Army’s first teams to try to change the way health care is provided,” Bannister said. “The basic premise of that is by using a patient-centered approach, and that changes the entire paradigm of how you look at health care.

“You try to look at it through the patient’s eyes.

What do they think adds value? It just changes the whole way you do business. It makes health care easier for the patient. It makes navigation easier. Better access. An example: 60 percent of our appointments are available on the same day. The motto for us is that we want to see the patients when they want to be seen.”

If you’re looking for evidence that this line of thinking works, just consider the numbers: The clinic enjoys 95 percent average patient satisfaction with visits over the past year, and continuity of care with patients assigned a primary care manager is better than 81 percent. Also, the clinic recently received the highest level recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance for systematic use of patientcentered, coordinated care management processes.

Location plays a large part in the Home’s mission, as well; as a Puyallup-based satellite of Madigan Army Medical Center, Bannister said that one of the Home’s key accomplishments is bringing military health care closer to military families outside the gates of Joint

Base Lewis McChord. Since opening its doors, the clinic has played a significant role in helping Madigan Army Medical Center improve its primary care market share for military beneficiaries by 23 percent over the past two years.

For Bannister and the Community Medical Home Team, it’s all done because of the people they serve.

“It’s not just important, it’s a privilege,” said Bannister. “These young families are so vital.

“I’ve had opportunities to do things at some higher levels, but I’ve been with the Army now for 35 years. I’ve taken care of Army families for about 31 of those years.

Army families are so unique. There’s nothing they can’t do or won’t do, no sacrifice they won’t make. They’re the most caring, understanding patient, and they just deserve the very best.

“These young moms are many times away from their support systems,” Bannister continued. “They’re out here in Washington state and their families may be back there on the East Coast. They’re totally dependent on our health care facility, so we do what we can to make their experience better. We’re called a home, because we treat our patients like family.”

Distinguished Service Award

Mimi Pattison, M.D.,

medical director of Franciscan Hospice & Palliative Care As the first physician in Washington state to incorporate palliative care into her practice almost a decade and a half ago, Marilyn Pattison said she faced “great stigma” and “a lack of understanding from my colleagues.”

Fast forward to 2013, when her colleagues among the South Sound medical community come together to laud her as a Health Care Champion.

“I was fortunate enough to be working at Franciscan in 1997, when they asked me to help launch the Pacific Northwest’s first palliative care program,” recalled Pattison, now the medical director of Franciscan Health System’s hospice and palliative care department. “I started asking the question of health care providers, ‘Would you be surprised if the patient you are examining died in the next year?’”

It’s a simple, though uncomfortable, question, but it’s one that helped launch Franciscan’s immensely successful hospital-based palliative medical care unit, one that includes the promotion of community outreach and the formation of inhouse hospice services in Pierce, King and Kitsap Counties.

Today, not only is Franciscan’s palliative unit the largest endof-life provider in Washington – serving thousands of patients

and their families each year – but Franciscan’s Hospice House is the only freestanding inpatient hospice facility in the area. In 2008, Franciscan, with Pattison’s guidance, began an initiative called “Closing the Disparity Gap” to make sure families from all minority populations have access to high quality, culturally sensitive endof-life services.

“Our hospice program,” Pattison added, “is one of the few with ‘open access’ admission, which allows patients to continue treatments like chemotherapy that may ease a person’s symptoms.”

And while Pattison counts her hand in all of these initiatives as some of her foremost achievements, she continues to remain active in reaching out.

“My greatest achievement was starting the first communitybased palliative care orogram in the Northwest and in the country at Franciscan,” she said. “Today, I spend a great deal of my time training and advising other providers and organizations on how to implement end-of-life services (for) their patients.

“I take great pride in being able to support patients and their families at the end stages of their life,” she added. “I’m grateful that Franciscan continues to support this endeavor and its growth in our community.”
