Casey ARBENZ

Hester Law Group

Casey Arbenz says he wishes he had known earlier that “going to the gym, instead of going to lunch” would bring interesting mid-day networking, help him feel better and make for much more productive afternoons. Those are all important to keeping his busy schedule as energetic criminal defense attorney with Tacoma’s Hester Law, past president of Young Lawyers in the bar association, Gig Harbor city councilman, active triathlete and involved dad to almost two (second is on the way) children. “I know I’ve ‘made it’ because I’m so incredibly happy, but I have so many more things I plan to accomplish,” Arbenz says. Two separate nominations pointed to Casey’s active service in community leadership positions, combined with growing professional accomplishments. It all comes together in a well-earned recognition among 40 Under Forty for 2015.

Bobbie BAILEY

Marketing Puget Sound

Tacoman Bobbie Bailey says she started out interested in computer science, but loved working with people, so she shifted to sales in the advertising sector. One of her employees at Marketing Puget Sound describes Bobbie as full of vibrant energy with undeniable confidence that others are drawn to. Another called her “a force of nature,” so it seems following the entrepreneurial instinct into her own small business ownership was a good decision. Six years of success and six employees testify to the firm’s full-service marketing style, which allows Bobbie to also volunteer with Experience Tacoma and as a founder of South Sound 100 Women. She also values the opportunity to “teach my children how to do business and remain your authentic self” as something incredible. Such achievements and initiative make Bobbi Bailey a worthy addition to this year’s classof 40 Under Forty.

Congratulations to

Casey Arbenz

and his success as an aggressive advocate!

4 | 2015 40 Under Forty

Amber BLANKENSHIP

Great Wolf Lodge

Amber Blankenship, retail services director for Great Wolf Lodge in Lewis County, is another 2015 40 Under Forty honoree with an impressive personal story. A few years ago, she became a single mother with her two children and facing financial challenges. Her response was a commitment to complete her college studies full-time, while also holding a full-time job and offering volunteer leadership of an industry association. Career advancement at Olympia’s largest hotel brought a recruitment to become catering sales manager with her current employer, then banquet manager and most recently to her current position. Amber’s college degree was completed in 2014 and she is moving forward in the quest to create a great life for her children. The journey continues for Amber Blankenship, but from here on out, she’ll be able to count herself a member of the 40 Under Forty family along the way.

Ryan CARTER

US Bank

The typical 15-year-old life of Ryan Carter was jolted with a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, but after learning more about the condition, he set out to not let it define who he was or what he could do. And reviewing a resume of climbing and skiing the most prominent peaks in North and South America, solo bicycle ventures from San Francisco to Puget Sound, half-marathons and a trail full marathon and so much more, it is hard to discount his success. Carter began as a business relationship manager for US Bank six years ago, admittedly with very little experience in the field, and has been relentlessly learning ever since. Today, he is proud to be able to offer advice (and products or services) to help business owners be more successful in their ventures. He also volunteers with Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, especially at Camp Leo, and raising funds for children with Cystic Fibrosis. As his nominator wrote, “Ryan does not do anything halfway.” That approach earned Ryan Carter inclusion among 40 Under Forty honoree for 2015.

Christine COOLEY

Pierce Conservation District

Christine Cooley’s passion is sustainability and it’s a field where she has worked now more than a decade. Her present position as coordinator for the agriculture community of interest at Pierce County Conservation District is actually funded by Russell Family Foundation, an organization with many interests, including this initiative to improve the Puyallup River watershed. “I strive to be an agent of change,” Cooley said, “and I want that change to be positive. But it never comes without a price.” Her biggest challenge has often been getting persons from opposite sides of issues to work together for their common good. But with the idea of sustainability as her guiding philosophy, she is always trying to live up to it. Christine Cooley is vicechair of Sustainable Tacoma Commission, a member of the steering committee for Earthship Seattle, primary organizer of Tacoma Green Drinks and, now, a 40 Under Forty honoree for 2015.

Adam CLARK

Choice Construction

Adam Clark, president of Choice Construction in Gig Harbor, is a great example of 40 Under Forty achievements. A sixyear Choice employee, he worked in the field growing up, then came back from college to a position in business development before his recent promotion. Being relatively young in an industry traditionally known by clients for “more seasoned builders,” Adam is feverishly adding continuing education to his calendar. That causes some pressure on finding a work-life balance for him, and for many others on this year’s honoree list. Outdoor recreation is his fix for this. In fact, Clark was once on the Seattle Mariners’ scout team, playing in numerous scouting combines across the United States. He also enjoys golfing, camping and skiing, describing his outlet as being able to “shut off the phone, disconnect and recharge my batteries.” He’s certainly earned such respites as a member of this year’s 40 Under Forty class.

Liz DAVIS

Northwest Venture Philanthropy

Liz Davis was described by her nominator as “a force in the Olympia community and beyond” with her passionate advocacy for education and the welfare of children and youth that clearly merits inclusion as a 40 Under Forty 2015 honoree. As a firstyear high school English teacher, Liz began to realize that many of her students experienced traumatic events in their lives outside of school that greatly impeded their success in school. She cared so much that, after six years in front of a classroom, a professional crisis of “compassion fatigue” prompted her to move into training at a Fortune 50 insurance firm. She had also joined Junior League of Olympia, a service organization that later elected her as president, with continuing service on the international JL board. Today, Davis leads Northwest Venture Philanthropy, an organization she co-founded to help social-purpose groups build capacity and improve the lives of children. She is also fund-raising chair for United Way of Thurston County, along with service on a number of government, community and non-profit boards.

Matt DEBORD

Timberland Bank

Another homegrown talent, Matt DeBord graduated Olympia High School before attending University of Washington Seattle, where he played varsity football on teams that won the 2001 Rose Bowl. His studies led to a position with the state agency that regulates banks in Washington, where he helped make it through the stresses of financial meltdown from 2007 to 2012. Matt then took a position in commercial banking himself, before being named senior vice president at the Olympia branch of Timberland Bank. “I’m passionate about Olympia,” DeBord told the judging panel. “I’ve lived here most of my life and I think the city has tons of potential.” He is proud of being able to lend money to local businesses, then see them grow to provide new jobs, new development and new investment in his home town. Beyond his position at the bank, he also participates in Olympia Downtown Association and as a member of Olympia Rotary.

Congratulations on being named to the 2015 Class of 40 Under Forty. We’re proud to have you on the Timberland team! Matt DeBord

Voshte DEMMERT-

Color Graphics

GUSTAFSON

Voshte Demmert-Gustafson, president of Color Graphics, a printing and promotional items firm in Tumwater, saw her first exposure to real “work” on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska at age 14. She used those earnings and lessons learned from crewing for her father to succeed as the first generation college graduate in her family. Afterward, she worked for Alaska Airlines, and during the tech boom, she was engaged in technical recruiting before taking an HR post with Seattle’s large children’s hospital. With two children and her husband, Voshte then pivoted toward a long-time dream of entrepreneurship, returning to Olympia to purchase Color Graphics. Without any experience in that industry, the first year-plus was challenging, but it’s been steady growth since. She remains active within the Native American culture of her Tlingit Tribe of Alaska, along with a focus on continuing education for herself and her employees. Another great example of youthful accomplishments that deserve wide recognition.

Joe DUDEK

Amazon

Joe Dudek came to the South Sound a year ago, when Amazon chose him as general manager for its large R&D fulfillment operation in Sumner. Earlier, he graduated U.S. Military Academy at West Point, then was a distinguished leader of soldiers in Iraq, where he brought every member of his unit home safely, and as an officer in charge of the honor guards at Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery. He brings his uniformed experience to the civilian world with a focus on mentorship of veterans, particularly within the Ecommerce world. “There are two things you can control: How hard you try; and How you help others,” Dudek wrote in judging materials. “Everything else is out of your control.” That understanding makes clear Joe Dudek’s approach to others, to life and work, and his passion for leadership development. It also places him within 2015 class for 40 Under Forty.

Reid EKBERG

Pilkey-Hopping & Ekberg, Inc.

As chair of Gig Harbor’s Planning Commission, Reid Ekberg commits hours of service to his hometown’s future. On the job, the vice president of Pilkey-Hopping & Ekberg Inc., a Tacomabased insurance firm, is leading a family-run business that dates back 119 years – clearly his roots are deep in South S o u n d heritage. A fourth-generation insurance agent himself, he chairs the statewide association of independent agents and brokers and will become president of PK&E this fall. Ekberg also actively works on behalf of the Strong Kids campaign at YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties and other causes. Asked in the evaluation process to name a lesson learned that would have helped him earlier in life, he said, “Enjoy the present and find joy in everyday. It’s important to have goals and look to the future, but if one doesn’t appreciate today, (then) tomorrow will not be any better.” Insightful wisdom from another great example of 40 Under Forty that deserves recognition.

Joy GIOVANINI

Peninsula School District

By noon of her first day as a teacher, Joy Giovanini was under her desk on the phone, calling her husband to ask whether she had made a huge mistake. Thankfully, he was able to talk her out in time to welcome the 24 five- and six-year-olds excited for their afternoon kindergarten class. And the next 12 school years went much, much better. After teaching each K-8 grade level, she has moved to a district-wide position as curriculum facilitator for college and career readiness, with special emphasis on finding new triggers for students’ passion for learning. Opening up STEM opportunities to all students from preschool to post-secondary, and especially for girls, stimulated a recent Saturday expo where 200 middle school girls heard keynote speakers and got to meet with adults working in science, technology, engineering and math careers. That focus on the future and passion to improve the present has earned Joy Giovanini inclusion among 40 Under Forty honoree for 2015.

Lynda FOSTER

State House of Representatives

Lynda Foster says her first real job was as a Girl Scout Cookie saleswoman and her “pay” was being able to attend summer camp, something really important to her but beyond easy reach of her single mother raising four daughters. ”Resilience leads to success” is one of many lessons learned early, and which apply today as she is leading Young Democrats of Washington to new achievements. This self-described “results-driven, goal-oriented gal who doesn’t like to ‘hurry up and wait’ “ is also learning how to effectively lead through delegation and teamwork, the only way to accomplish the big goals she has. Young Democrats tripled membership, started new chapters and raised $15,000 more than in past years as Lynda was at the helm. The group’s accomplishments brought individual recognition to her as “Rising Star” from the State Democratic Party. And Lynda Foster’s star continues to rise as she joins 40 Under Forty class of 2015.

Pilkey-Hopping & Ekberg Inc. congratulates Reid Ekberg and the 39 other Honorees for the work they are doing to make a difference in the community.

Molly HILL

Summit Financial Group

Clients of a Gig Harbor financial planning office know Molly Hill, VP of operations, as the calming and forthright presence while they make major decisions about retirement financial choices. The firm’s owner wrote in his nomination for this award of Hill’s importance in managing activities efficiently as its revenues grew fourfold, all while he was able to work fewer hours thanks to streamlining measures she created. Among the rewards, she has been invited into ownership. But around her family, Molly and her husband focus on their two month-old daughter, who is the most awesome baby ever, in their views. “I have a job that I love, that I enjoy going to,” Hill wrote to the judging panel. “I feel like my time at work is well spent and that I am making a difference. Then to look at the other side to my life, my husband and I have a home that we love going home to each night.” She feels the combination of both is her definition of success. Molly Hill is enjoying life in all aspects and appreciates being named a 40 Under Forty honoree in the class of 2015.

Jennica HOLMQUIST

Homes by Jennica

Jennica Holmquist is one of the youngest members of the 2015 class, but that’s been the pattern of her life thus far. To wit: high school graduation at 17, assistant manager of a massage studio two years later, real estate license by age 21 and owning her own business, Homes by Jennica, not long thereafter. She says it has often puzzled her to realize that everyone doesn’t want to be motivated or strive to do their best. Young Professional Network of Tacoma-Pierce County captured her enthusiasm, and active participation carried her forward to the orgaization’s 2015 presidency. Jennica is also presidentelect of Pierce County Women’s Council of Realtors, a director with TPC Association of Realtors and holds a number of other leadership positions. All this and more within her first quarter-century of existence marks Jennica Holmquist as a fast-rising 40 Under Forty honoree in the class of 2015.

Values-based leadership + a passion for service Summit Financial Group proudly congratulates Molly Hill on her well-deserved achievement as a recipient of the 40 Under 40 Award. Starting as an intern from Pacific Lutheran University, Molly quickly proved herself invaluable. Eleven years later, she continues to be a passionate advocate for the clients she serves. As a partner in the company and VP of Operations, Molly brings intelligence, compassion, humility and grace to her role. The firm’s tenure of success is directly linked to Molly’s talent, commitment and leadership. On behalf of her work family, her supportive husband Dustin, and her beautiful new daughter, Pepper, we offer our heartfelt love and support!

Mary HOLSTE

Side x Side Creative

Mary Holste first came to the South Sound as a student at PLU, subsequently earning her degree in graphic design before working (and teaching) for the university. She then was marketing director at the Grand Cinema and co-organized the first Tacoma Film Festival. She later added her creative touches to a number of community projects and nonprofit organizations before opening her own business, Side x Side Design, eight years ago. “I already feel successful and like I’ve ‘made it’ because I am my own boss. I get to call the shots about my projects and schedule,” Holste said. That helps when she is also a hands-on mom of two toddlers, and it allows her to donate time to creative jobs for nonprofits doing work for causes that she believes in. There is a profound lesson she says she has learned thus far in life: “Go with your gut. It’s often a lot more helpful than your brain.” Mary Holste is another very accomplished member of the Class of 2015 40 Under Forty.

Michael HURST

Moss Adams

Michael Hurst had always expected to be a career military officer, and he had an exemplary start: graduate of The Citadel, commissioned a lieutenant in the infantry to lead a platoon through the Iraqi invasion, qualified as an Army Ranger and served four additional combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, including 40 parachute jumps. But he knew that was over one night in Tacoma – he was assigned to JBLM – when he met a girl. Actually, Michael knew that she was who he wanted to be with forever, but that brought his decision to leave the active military. After struggling to find new occupational purpose, Michael enrolled in UW graduate school and, three years later, brought M.B.A. and C.P.A. credentials to Moss Adams, where today he is tax manager of the Tacoma office. He remains a board member and CFO for Second Ranger Battalion Assistance Foundation, while loving his wife, two “amazingly happy boys” and a vibrant career. And now, Michael Hurst is saluted as one of 40 Under Forty for 2015.

Robert HUMES

Kent School District

Robert Humes, assistant director for human resources with Kent Public Schools, says he made some wrong choices as a child left on his own while his mother worked several jobs in Los Angeles County during the 1980s. Fortunately, none of his mistakes were fatal or lasting, so when she used entrepreneurship to be able to move the family to better neighborhoods, he focused on school as a safe place. Today, his work provides support to a local education system and pro-bono HR and board facilitation services to a number of non-profit organizations. A decade of Army experience was the defining moment for Humes’ career, using training in personnel duties with overseas assignments to Korea, Iraq and the Balkans as the launch pad for civilian work for state government agencies. With B.S. and M.S. degrees in HR, Labor & Industries recruited him from Tumwater WorkSource, where he had a niche coaching others to get jobs in a tough market. Later, OFM, then Department of Revenue sought him out before his current job recruited him.

Judd Johnson

Tacoma Public Utilities

Judd Johnson has been supporting the Tacoma community for over 20 years, according to his nominators. Not bad for someone who just celebrated his 36th birthday, but Point Defiance Zoo Society confirms the record of service. Beginning as a volunteer high school cadet providing security for Zoobilee festival night, he’s gone on to 11 years as a board member and he’ll be Zoo Society president next year. Johnson also actively supports Pierce County Aids Foundation and Sexual Assault Center of Pierce County. His employment as security administrator for Tacoma Public Utilities, following work at Weyerhaeuser until a 2010 layoff, is excellent foundation for doctoral studies in business administration. “My Scoutmaster taught me how to be a gentleman and take care of my mom, sisters (and others),” he says. Now, Johnson is carrying those lessons forward by opening his home to a number of international exchange students. That helps him feel like he “has a family,” as he watches them become community leaders of their own.

2015 40 Under Forty | 9

Mathew JONES

Sunset Air

For Mathew Jones, two broad areas make him most proud: his family and the life they have created, and starting out in a new career field that is already showing success, allowing him to help others as he learns. “I love being around my wife and two young daughters,” he told the judging panel. “They inspire me to work hard, to enjoy being silly and funny, to enjoy the moment and the journey. (They inspire) me to appreciate life.” Now a project manager for Lacey-based Sunset Air, Jone brought limited experience in construction when he joined the HVAC world and building homes five years ago. Already, he’s found places to contribute within Olympia Master Builders and Thurston County Tour of Homes, while earning the respect and support of co-workers. He also spent eight years as a volunteer coach in competitive youth soccer and was nominated for coach of the year statewide. Mathew Jones is accomplished member of the Class of 2015 40 Under Forty.

Whitney KERSHNER

Edward Jones

Whitney Kershner, a financial advisor with Edward Jones’ Olympia office on Littlerock Road, is another young leader who serves in many ways — on the foundation board for Behavioral Health Resources, Women’s Leadership Council, YWCA and Soroptimist International. She is also well-known and respected in the pursuit of equal rights for gay and lesbian couples. “Overcoming the perceptions about being young, female and gay from clients, coworkers and the general public” has been her biggest challenge, wrote a candid Kershner to the judging panel. “To resolve this,” she continued, “I provide impeccable service and maintain my values in every situation.” Her nominator may have had that in mind when he pointed out Whitney Kershner as a great leader and great community asset, which is why she’s been found by our judges to be worthy of selection to this year’s 40 Under Forty class.

Sherrana KILDUN

Greater Tacoma Community Foundation

Unlike many in her generation – and other 40 honorees – Sherrana Kildun has been with the same employer for 10 years, although in increasingly responsible positions. She joined The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation as office manager before moving into community programs and now is Director of Donor Engagement. All of her career has been dedicated to building relationships that strengthen the community. Spark Grants, Youth Philanthropy Board and other programs benefited directly from her work. “My biggest challenge is one many working moms face and that is finding Work, Family and Self balance,” Kildun told program judges. Even with a supportive workplace, she admits feeling a little guilty about not being home with her children more. “On the other hand, I feel that I am a better mom because I am doing something that I love and that benefits the community we live in.” Judges for this recognition agreed, adding Sherrrana Kildun to the 2015 class for 40 Under Forty.

Adam LANEER

Adam Laneer Construction

Adam Laneer, owner and operator of a self-named construction firm in Lacey, also believes a sense of community is the right focus around which to build his business. But this is not his first vocation: The Evergreen State College awarded him a bachelor’s degree in computer science, which brought Adam an IT job with one of the local credit unions. Feeling a need for more growth opportunity, Adam got into home mortgage lending with a national bank firm and became a preferred construction loan provider to a large scale builder before moving to the “other side” of real estate as a licensed residential broker. Joining a single-trade builder in partnership, he moved it to being a full general contractor, then started his own company three years ago with two employees. There are now 15 workers and volume has gone “through the roof,” all while, in the words of his nomination, maintaining exceptional customer service and investing in his employees. The Capital communities will continue to see Adam Laneer building into the future as a member of 40 Under Forty class of 2015.

Lizz LEWIS

Joe LeROY

HopeSparks

Joe LeRoy has been CEO of HopeSparks, a nonprofit social service and counseling agency in Tacoma, for a year, and he believes he is successful because the people surrounding him are successful and receiving accolades. As for his own role, his goal each day is to be better than the day before, learning from mistakes and making new ones, but always learning something new. Among his new knowledge is how to advocate for his disabled son in the world of kindergarten, which hasn’t been easy, but does bring deep pride in watching his boy play soccer, take piano lessons and learn to play golf. LeRoy says his biggest personal challenge was to shed weight seven years ago. He lost 105 pounds that year, and he has kept all of it off since by dumping old habits and forming new, healthier ones. It’s that kind of vision, resolve and accomplishment that earned Joe LeRoy his place among 40 Under Forty honorees in the class of 2015.

Farelli’s Wood Fire Pizza

Lizz Lewis grew up in her famed family’s restaurants, starting at age 10 by clearing tables and refilling water glasses at the Hob Nob near Wright Park in Tacoma. After high school, she went off on her own career path, but was drawn back to join Farrelli’s Wood Fire Pizza in 2001 and now owns two locations. What is remarkable about Lizz, however, is how her personal lifestyle impact changes have spread to the whole company. Over the past two years, she found a passion for fitness and health, losing 120 pounds herself, then sharing what she had learned and starting a companywide program of wellness. There are voluntary Sunday workouts, traveling with a nurse to each store location to meet with crew members interested to improve their own health, and adding new under 500 calories menu items. Expanding good health to a whole employer group, while volunteering with Run to Remember, JBLM Fisher House and AUSA easily place Lizz Lewis among 40 Under Forty honorees in the class of 2015.

Matt LEVI

CHI Franciscan

Matt Levi is unquestionably at the forefront of advancing health care trends, yet his professional medical training topped out as a basic level EMT. Instead, his work has focused on bringing strategic planning and modern technology tools to the delivery of quality care: As strategic planning director for Franciscan Medical Group, he helped expand seven clinics with a hundred physicians into more than 100 locations and 600 doctors from Port Orchard to Auburn. More recently, Levi is the leader of CHI Franciscan’s pioneering Virtual Health Services, through which patients can consult real-time by phone or video with a health care provider without leaving their own home. United Way of Pierce County has also benefited from Levi’s talents for the past six years, and he is current secretary of the agency’s board. He also volunteers with Tacoma Walforf School at Voyager Elementary School. Helping to educate the next generation as well as forming new models for delivery of affordable medical care mark Matt Levi as an outstanding member of 2015 40 Un-

Anna MILLER

Federal Way Symphony

Anna James Miller, executive director of Federal Way Symphony — the daughter of a Grammy award-winning musician and raised by a single mother of three girls — began studying ballet at age 4. With obvious talent, she left home and school when 17 to pursue a professional dance career, taking her GED. After several national and an international tour, she retired to focus on a more collaborative, less competitive career in arts administration. Starting at a number of well-known Puget Sound area organizations, Anna’s first “solo” was as executive director for the community arts unit in Leavenworth for “four challenging years of immense learning, as well as completion of a BA” degree. All of her talents and experience are now being shared with South Sound arts supporters for the past two years through the Symphony, FW Chamber of Commerce, South King County Cultural Coalition and State Arts Alliance. Her nominator called her “a selfstarter … goal-driven … (with) a high degree of motivation and energy … and passion.” All of these talents and attributes mark Miller as one to watch within 40 Under Forty class of 2015.

12 | 2015 40 Under Forty

Ryan MANDELL

B&R Auto Wrecking

Ryan Mandell, a regional manager for B&R Auto Wrecking serving all of Washington and Portland, is also in the “people business,” and does very well, according to his company owner, whose nomination pointed to recent awards as Manager of the Year and Most Valuable Team Member. Ryan “has produced a work environment (for 66 employees) where ‘family first’ and ‘giving back’ are a common thread, with recent examples at Puyallup Food Bank. He also helps his employer to aid local public safety agencies in vehicle extrication training, supports DUI efforts at JBLM and his family’s church parish and school. “I have found that devoting more time and effort to my children has made me a better team member to my company,” Ryan explained. “I have (also) found that listening is the most powerful tool to build relationships and to increase sales in my organization.” Excellent lessons learned and demonstrated by Ryan that warrant his selection to this year’s 40 Under Forty class.

Phil OWEN

SideWalk Olympia

Though he never planned a career in homeless services, Phil Owen has been making great strides for the greater Olympia area in this area since being involved in the start up of SideWalk, an agency that seeks to solve homelessness through a program of Rapid Rehousing. The data-driven association has used lean principles and strong connections with the business community to assist more than 430 individuals escape the streets and move into permanent, privatemarket housing in under three years. Outside of his job at SideWalk, Owen is also a live-in volunteer at Bread & Roses, an emergency shelter, something he began a dozen years ago. “I just volunteered one day at a local soup kitchen and was compelled by the experience,” he said. “I’ve been volunteering and working in homeless services” ever since. From the success of his own program, clearly there is a worthwhile future for Owen as the SideWalk program could address needs in so many communities.

Devin PAGE

The Rush Companies

Gayle SELDEN

Ed Selden Carpet One

Devin Page carried his freshly-earned physiology degree into a workforce decimated by the first dot-com burst in 2001, so a temp agency found him placement with a biotech company – in facilities management. Four years later, he switched to Construction Management, which opened a whole new career that two years ago saw Gig Harbor’s The Rush Companies name him vice president of construction. Clearly, it’s been a good fit as his nominator described Page growing that team from 8 to 23 employees and revenues up to a projected $60 million this year from $23 million in 2013. The group also tripled third-party work contracts, extending beyond solely Rush projects. It recently opened a Seattle office to manage projects in King County, including a large multifamily one there and another in Bremerton. All worthy accomplishments that usher Devin Page into the 40 Under Forty class of 2015.

Gayle Selden also makes her customers comfortable in their new or remodeled homes as president of a third-generation family carpet and flooring supplier in Lakewood. Her nominator called her “wise beyond her years and (she) innately understands the needs of others.” That could be the motivation behind her being a philanthropist, in addition to company leadership, largely learning on-the-job. A focus on sustainable flooring and a high level of customer service are key for her. “In a year I planned to take off between undergrad and law school, the company needed a warehouse worker, so I started driving truck,” Selden explained. “That developed into full-time selling (and) my ‘one year off’ job had really turned into a career.” She continues community service as a past president of Junior League, supporter of Fund for Women and Girls, Rotary Club of Lakewood and her local chamber of commerce. Those are experiences that make her a solid addition to this youthful recogni-

Zach POWERS

Pacific Lutheran University

Zach Powers has proven to be a “powerful” force for good in many areas in greater Tacoma during his first 30 years here, and that’s why he joins the 2015 roster of 40 Under Forty honorees. His passions for communication, outreach and creative programming combine to an “all-in” engagement with local politics and government, arts and culture, athletics and education that mean Zach is a busy fellow, in addition to his work as media & content manager for Pacific Lutheran University. “At the core of what I do,” Powers says, “both professionally and in service to my community, is communicating information about opportunities, services and resources.” Coaching of youth basketball teams and steering committee roles with a number of political campaigns also connect him to others to benefit the greater South Sound neighborhoods. All around, Zach Powers is a stellar choice to be in “40 Under Forty” recognition.

Grandpa would be proud! Congratulations to Gayle from your staff. 3901 Steilacoom Blvd SW, Lakewood, WA 98499 (253) 588-2104 www.edseldencarpetonelakewood.com

Kristine REEVES

Washington Department of Commerce

Kristiné Reeves enjoyed early success engaged in public service as a regional aide to Sen. Patty Murray, then becoming a leader in veterans and military affairs. That path continued into her current role as the governor’s lead for Military & Defense Sector under the state Department of Commerce. A self-described “small town girl from Moses Lake” who grew up in poverty, sometimes hungry and without a home, Reeves is most passionate about opportunity. She works to ensure that every child has the opportunity for education and community support. Kristiné also remembers her first real mentor, a high school English and Journalism teacher who made sure that she understood integrity and character, by modeling it every day. Veterans, retirees and their families in Washington are benefiting from her focus, which brought a $4.8 million grant to their programs in her first year on the job. Kristiné Reeves stands tall within this year’s ranks of 40 Under Forty.

Jamilia SHERLS

MultiCare

Jamilia Sherls was reading medical self-help books for fun in the third grade and resolved two years later to become a pediatrician. As life has turned out thus far, she learned she could have a greater impact of more lives through a focus on public health, which is a position as MultiCare Health’s community outreach program manager and registered nurse. Her current continuing studies are leading to a doctorate in nursing practice, while continuing a full-time job with many facets. A Wilson High School (Tacoma) and University of Puget Sound graduate, Sherls demonstrates her passion for care by encouraging young students to consider a nursing career. “I feel it’s important for me to serve as a role model to students of color, to show them that it is possible to become a nurse or other health professional,” she explains. She has also directed the annual Nurse Camp for high school students and occasionally volunteers in local classrooms. Jamilia Sherls’ accomplishments already earn her inclusion in the Class of 2015 40 Under Forty, and it seems she’s only just begun making an impact.

Congratulations Jamilia Sherls, RN MultiCare Health System is proud to celebrate Jamilia Sherls, a registered nurse and MultiCare Community Outreach Program Manager, for her incredible contribution to our community. She truly deserves to be named among the 40 under Forty. Jamilia’s focus on health equity and community health improves our region and supports MultiCare’s mission of partnering for healing and a healthy future. She’s a champion for those who otherwise wouldn’t have access to health care and works with the Ebony Nurses Association of Tacoma to provide health screenings at community events, targeting low-income and minority populations. Congratulations to Jamilia and all the honorees.

Matt SIMON

Edward Jones

Andrea TULL

Coordinated Care

Matthew Simon is with Edward Jones in Tacoma, but you’re as likely to find him in a Little League dugout, or with his wife and four kids, as holding the chair’s gavel at Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber’s South County branch. Following P.L.U. graduation, he tried banking, then volunteered to be stay-at-home dad to their first son, during which he discovered financial planning. He joined the national investment advisory firm in 2008 and says he learned a great deal about dealing with stress those early years; remember, the financial meltdown began that same year. Coping skills were invaluable in 2010 when his wife’s ultrasound showed that their new daughter would require a heart transplant shortly after birth. The little girl is now a 5-year-old bouncing off to kindergarten this fall with no rejection or complications. The Soundview Little League board of directors’ coach coordinator and manager/coach of the 9/10 All-Star team, Matthew Simon is right at home along the baseline.

Karissa THOMPSON

Heritage Bank

Karissa Thompson, manager of downtown Puyallup’s Heritage Bank branch, is only the third woman president of that community’s 67-year-old Rotary Club, where she is engaging members to a passion for Youth Advocacy. This year, they plan to form a partnership with the school district to bring mentors, advocates and resources to kids. High school students will be paired up with adults, then take their learned skills to middle school mentorships, so those kids can connect to some in elementary grades. “My mission is to create partnerships in the community,” Thompson said, “and help others get plugged in.” Her record demonstrates that she’s good at it, having volunteered with AUSA, Puyallup Food Bank and Helping Hand House, in addition to Rotary. Karissa says her biggest challenge is trying to balance her family – she’s a single mother of two – with work and community service, all while remaining healthy by managing a chronic health condition.

Tacoma Public Utilities

Andrea Tull has a strong professional record of accomplishments, but maintains that her job does not define her. “Though I love what I do for a living” — government relations director for Coordinated Care — “I find what I do in my personal time probably more defines me as a person,” she described to this program’s judging panel. You might find her as a reading tutor and board member for Communities in School Tacoma, where she also chaired Stuff the Bus campaign, fundraising auction, golf tournament and luncheon. Andrea is an ambassador board member for Emergency Food Network and active with the alumni council at University of Puget Sound. Many of these engagement activities surround her passion for social justice and education. As a first-generation college graduate in her family, she realizes the importance of offering all young persons the chance to exceed their roots. Andrea Tull clearly belongs in the 2015 Class of 40 Under Forty.

Jamie VOGT

Travel Tacoma

Jamie Vogt has only been on the job for a year, but what a year it has been for the VP-Marketing at Travel Tacoma-Pierce County. This is a regional tourism promotion agency and it spearheaded efforts to serve the national and global interest in June’s U.S. Open golf championship – the 115th annual event, but first ever to be staged in the Pacific Northwest. Moving to the travel group from a prior position handling digital marketing and social media for Sound Transit’s Tacoma projects, Jamie actually has much deeper roots in the local area. A graduate of Peninsula High School at Gig Harbor, she first wrote for that school’s awardwinning newspaper, then moved up to freelance for Mother Jones magazine and the Peninsula Gateway weekly paper. Great experience, but nothing to compare with the astounding challenge when international TV crews and hundreds of press reporters converged on Chambers Bay for the golf event. All in a day’s work for Jamie Vogt, one of the newest members of the 40 Under Forty family.

Rachel YOUNG

Cascade Regional Blood Services

Rachel Young has been supervising marketing communications for Cascade Regional Blood Services for three-and-a-half years, but she’s been a giver to the community her whole life. One nominator described her a a true servant leader, noting her work with United Way of Pierce County’s Project U along with chairing the associate board for YWCA. In addition, she successfully completed an M.B.A. degree at P.L.U. while dealing with a personal tragedy, working full-time and volunteering. From her late husband’s military-related PTSD struggle, Rachel leaned forward to help other families that were rallying around their soldiers coming to grips with wartime aftermath. She has become an advocate for more support to these folks, not a victim of the current insufficient support. That is typical of how she uses her skills to engage other individuals to further causes important to her as Rachel Young rightfully joins 40 Under Forty in the class of 2015.

Rachel YOUNG

Miss Moffett’s Mystical Cupcakes

Rachel Young has ridden a whirlwind the past few years, going from a self-described “sad” accountant to an empowered cupcake shop owner – definitely an entrepreneur who now has two retail locations in Olympia. An education in bookkeeping and finance brought her an accounting position in Seattle, with a commute from Olympia. When her second son arrived, she chose to be a stay-at-home mom, then dabbled in the kitchen releasing tremendous excitement. Young’s business name – Miss Moffett’s Mystical Cupcakes – recognizes her great-grandmother, who was a wonderful cook. Rachel’s mother rallied in support of the new business idea and today manages the Capital Mall retail store. She also served as kitchen assistant for the breakout appearance on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars TV show, where she was runner-up. United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council, a local women’s shelter and Union Gospel Mission are frequent recipients of this honoree’s charitable attention.

The

Judging Process

Business Examiner’s 40 Under Forty program recognizes outstanding South Sound business and community leaders under the age of 40. Each class of 40 Under Forty represents the diversity of the South Sound, including those who have had great accomplishments and made significant contributions to their businesses, industries and communities. To select the 2015 honorees, a volunteer alumni panel independently reviewed hundreds of pages of nomination and information materials outlining all the potential honorees. Each panel member

submitted their top 10 choices (ranked #1 to #10) from the nominee pool. Those recommendations were compiled to create the weighted-basis for selection of the 40. The process of selecting a new class of 40 Under Forty is significant. A tremendous amount of thought and work goes in to the nomination, information questionnaire and judging process to highlight bright talent in our communities. Congratulations to all those nominated and selected, and thank you to those alumni who dedicated their time to ensure the program’s success.
