Eurobike 2015: ‘Size split’ and 27+ wheels
SIZE SPLIT, flat mount, boost standard and 27+ are the buzzwords at this year’s Eurobike, according to the organisers. As this issue lands, much of the global cycle trade will still be forging new deals, pressing flesh and seeking out hot new product in Friedrichshafen on the shores of Lake Constance in Germany. Aside from e-bikes taking up an ever larger share of the show (again), plus-sized MTB wheel sizes have been dominating the halls, as have direct mount brake calipers that reduce the weight difference between rim and disc brakes to a few hundred grams. ‘Size split’ is a trend that accommodates the broadening church of MTB wheel sizes, with brands equipping more models with several possible wheel formats. So a BIKEBIZ.COM
manufacturer may release a small MTB equipped with 650b wheels alongside a medium sized bike that offers a choice between 650b and 29, then a large version equipped for 29ers. In another MTB-based trend, perhaps indicative of a resurgence in the off-road market, ‘boost standard’ is a wider hub (six mm for back wheels and ten for front wheels) intended to provide broader support to spokes and boost stability. This year Eurobike has featured over 1,300 exhibitors, 46,000 industry visitors from 100 countries and around 2,000 journalists. Last year the show lost Specialized and Kona, the former also pulling out of Interbike. Trek is another big name that doesn’t attend the popular show. www.eurobike-show.com
EDITOR’S COMMENT EMERGING MARKET NO MORE TREK’S PRESIDENT John Burke can usually be relied on to say something interesting. I say this having caught one of his impassioned speeches at an Interbike breakfast conference a few years back, where I heard first hand his passion for getting more of the population on bikes and how the industry needs to support advocacy. More recently he said something very interesting (OK, maybe I’m building it up a bit now) in the also pretty fascinating news that Trek is going to start retailing online in partnership with IBDs in the US. In that story he predicted that sales of women’s bikes would make up half of Trek’s turnover within five years. That’s a heck of a prediction. If you couple that to what BikeBiz heard at Trek World – that in the UK, Trek’s women’s bike sales have grown 14 per cent in the last year, then you’ve a credible picture of a changing market. There aren’t any official market stats on how women’s bike sales have grown (in fact there aren’t any official market stats at all) so we’re left to wonder if Trek has grabbed a huge share of an emerging market (in which case, you should be worried if you aren’t Trek), or in fact that other brands are seeing the same kinds of gains in the women’s market. Logic suggests Trek aren’t the only ones. As one wise sage said to me in the past week – this is one emerging market that you don’t want to be left behind in, seeing as the customer base is in the region of 30million. After all this time talking about it, it seems that the women’s market has well and truly arrived. jharker@nbmedia.com

BICYCLE ASSOCIATION OF GREAT BRITAIN
CYCLING NEEDS
YOU
Now into his second term as the president of the Bicycle Association, Paul Stewart has a three point manifesto to grow cycling and he’s calling for every corner of the trade to get involved… IN WHAT has become an increasingly congested trade calendar, the Bicycle Association’s last AGM slipped under the radar somewhat. Yes, we’ll hold our hand up, even BikeBiz’s reporters were double booked. Therefore, it’s long overdue that we hear what the man at the helm, Paul Stewart, has to say for the future of UK cycling. Where have the industry levy funds ended up? How successful have sport programmes been? And what is going on behind the scenes to grow grass roots cycling, from the schools to the streets? “We came away from the AGM with a three point plan,” says Stewart. “We really need to focus on adding to our membership, which in turn will help with another very key, but long overdue goal of ours, which is to finally be able to offer reliable statistics. Finally, we

“We really need to focus on adding to our membership.” Paul Stewart, BA
want to relaunch Bike Hub. We wish to significantly widen the base of contributors in order to raise around £500,000 annually, as a minimum. When you take a sum of money like that to Government and say we as an industry have raised this, they’re more willing to listen to your ideas for progress and chip in. We’re pushing the DfT, in particular, for up to five per cent of the transport budget, which we realise is perhaps ambitious, but we must increase our pot from current levels.” In the coming years, the goal is to challenge the Government to match what the industry can raise in order to create a fund of over £1 million annually. “Cycling ticks a lot of the Government’s boxes, although it can feel like slow progress,” says Stewart. “But Phillip Darnton is an excellent representative with some
great connections. We’re lobbying hard for cycling infrastructure. The problem we’re experiencing is that ministers want a fast return on investment. The Dutch have had 34 years to be able to show the benefits of high modal share for cycling to health, air quality and liveable cities among other things.” At ten years old, Bike Hub is set for a revamp and a lot more PR to light a fire under the industry funded scheme. Bike Hub cash isn’t just for grassroots programmes like the Big Pedal though. One of the more recent developments has been a free to download mobile application which, as well as helping cyclists program A-to-Z or circular routes, will also automatically list local bike shops en-route. In the past decade, some £4 million in funding has come from numerous avenues in the trade,
BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER 11

much of which has gone on developing the National Cycle Network. Future funds are expected to, in one way or another, be channelled toward upping cycling’s modal share. Retailers willing to chip in a tiny percentage of their profit (just 0.005 per cent per sale) are matched with the same again, equating to £1 in every £1,000 going to Bike Hub’s pot. For those for which the levy is inappropriate, annual lump sum donations are welcomed. The problem is, £4 million in a decade isn’t quite ambitious enough in a time where cycling is in the spotlight and discussed in Westminster with far greater regularity than even five years ago. “We ideally need a greater spread of contributors. Encouragingly, in recent times we’ve seen some diverse sources, like publisher Rouleur, chipping in.
E-BIKE SHARE ON THE WAY SET TO be run by car sharing experts Car Plus, an electric bike share scheme is up for tender for projects at tourism and rural hostspots around England. The Department for Transport has made £700,000 available to drive forward e-bike tourism around the country, as well as give a shot in the arm of the electric bike industry. For more information see carplus.org.uk/projects/shared-e-bikes.
“We must lobby government for safe cycling on all roads.” Paul Stewart, BA But greater funding is needed to drive some excellent work. I’d encourage anyone in the business – be they bike fitters, publishers, manufacturers, anyone in the business – to chip in for the future of cycling. The cash funds projects such as the Sustrans-run Bike It scheme, The Big Pedal, Bike Week, Space for Cycling and much more, all of which are key projects to ensure both growth from the schools up and safe cycling on the roads for all.” So, what’s the long term vision? “I’ve just finished RideLondon,” concludes Stewart. “To ride for hours on end on closed roads was a joy I’ve never felt. We simply can’t continue to fight traffic in the way that we are. Therefore, we must lobby Government to create that space for safe cycling on all roads. We’re making it easier than ever to chip in through BikeHub, so if you share that vision, please contact steve@bicycleassociation. org.uk to offer what you can.”

GoRide, run by British Cycling, is delivering future stars. Over 60 per cent of the riders on the Great Britain Cycling Team came through the ranks with GoRide. The scheme has provided half a million opportunities for kids to engage with cycle sport. The Big Pedal, which runs during March alongside schools nationwide, saw nearly 1.2 million journeys by bike to educational facilities in just ten days. A further 250,000 were added by parents or teachers. 1,282 primary and 55 secondary schools participated.

KNOG Some of the new POS now with Moore Large
NEVER BORING Knog wants your attention. In fact, it wants everybody’s – from cyclists to deep sea divers – nobody can escape the firm’s locked grip or focused beam. Hugo Davidson talks to Mark Sutton about keeping trade exciting… How’s business? Still growing? The last 24 months has been the most exciting period of growth in our history, we’re found in 70 countries now. On the product side, we released the Qudos action video light for GoPro/DSLR and the Expose Smart and Expose Wrap lights for smartphones. People-wise, we have an international team. David Burger, our head of sales resides in Germany and services Europe, along with Sophie and Richard Gros in France. We have consolidated our distribution in the US to Highway Two, with our US sales guy, Brian Mark. In Melbourne we’ve hired a new head of brand and marketing, Sam Moore, who has come over from the dark side (his words) of international creative agencies. So our skillsets and geography have expanded. In recent years you’ve branched beyond cycling – has crossover product raised the brand’s profile? It has. We’ve seen incredible take up from the diving, skating and snow sports consumers. Photographers, film-makers and videographers have given great feedback. GoPro 16 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
themselves have given us incredible – but unfortunately unofficial - feedback. There’s 21 new bike lights this year – why so many and for what purposes are they? We’ve had discussions with retailers and distributors around the world and a one shift became clear, and it applies to all cyclists. It’s a consumer shift across more sectors than just cycling. That is, people want tailored solutions. One size fits all doesn’t work – it’s one size fits me. At the performance end, bikes are built meticulously, part by part. So when we upgraded our Blinder ARC and Road lights, we added more spec, but no more weight. In the mid–range, urban riders are no longer a true category. Each is different and needs different tech. Urban options should tailor to the environment. And at the entry level, it’s often function over form, yet they still carry style. With cheap lighting so readily available, why has Knog gone after the entry-level buyer? Cyclists who have a tight budget are given two options – ugly and uglier. With our engineering hat we’ve made
three light models with more spec – brighter, better runtime, constant bright technology, side illumination. With our design hat we’ve created ten patterns from wild to mild. Are you planning on entering any new categories? We’ve been looking at our expertise, our brand, and our customers and working out where our sweet spot is. Cycling is our priority and we’ve got some really exciting product ideas that we know could explode. I’d be lying if I said we weren’t looking at opportunities in other sectors. I just can’t say too much without killing you. How are you planning to market the brand going into 2016? We have already begun to see the fruits of this when we ran a threemonth global online film competition called No Ordinary Night. We received over 70 entries, of which 15–20 were effectively world class ads, and about half went beyond cycling into surfing, skiing and other storytelling. (As a benchmark, GoPro and the budget that no doubt went with them – recently ran a comp with PinkBike and received 140 entries
over 12 months. This is regarded by PR experts as a great result as video is notoriously difficult to get via competition). We’re also developing a more comprehensive social media strategy, including regular take-overs from those we’re calling “Knog Folk”, plus more thought leadership articles, and of course some trivial stuff because, Facebook! From a retailer’s point of view, why should they stock the Knog line over a competitor’s product? Knog has introduced a MAP policy (minimum advertised price) to prevent products being sold at silly prices on the internet, which affects the brand and sales on an international level. UK distributors Moore Large are offering dealers 15 per cent off-line discount on new Knog lines. If dealers advertise the selling price of one of those ranges at less than 10 per cent off the price Moore Large has the right to withdraw the discount without notice. We’re one of the few cycling businesses that actually has a brand. People find our attitude appealing. We have a passionate following because we believe in being a little bit naughty. www.moorelarge.co.uk BIKEBIZ.COM

They’ll be joining somewhere north of 280 bike companies, including big names and upstarts alike. While new product will likely be the main attraction for the trade (and there’ll be UK and world debuts at NEC) there’ll be plenty of other reasons to make the trip, including chance to try out some of that new product on MTB, kids, e-bike, city and road tracks, plus seminars and big names like Sam Pilgrim and the Big Air Invitational. They were designed to increase visibility for cyclists changing lanes and turning at busy junctions, and do so with bright amber flashing LED lights that can be seen from all angles and in all weather conditions, the brand tells BikeBiz. They’re neatly turned on and off with a simple tap and the WingLights clip off and snap together to form a neat keyring on a carabiner hook after use. There’s a more affordable version that screws directly into the handlebars and don’t feature magnets. You may have already caught them on Kickstarter, where it hit its 20 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER

funding target twice over. But now the brand is at the show, aiming to get the product into major retailers and independently owned shops. Rubena will be heading to NEC with big news. The tyre label is rebranding as Mitas under the guidance of Czech-based holding firm CGS. Mitas is a big name in the motorcycle world, we’re told, and will absorb the Rubena cycle range into its portfolio of products, with more clout promised. There will be no change to manufacturing process, quality control, products, back-up and support but, as would be expected from the large European producer of bicycle tyres, there are plenty of innovative products waiting to be launched, which is where the show comes in. The first out of the Mitas stable is Textra, an all-new dense and extremely strong rubberised fabric applied to the tyre’s sidewall to increase resistance against BIKEBIZ.COM

CSG UK
Cannondale’s SuperSix Evo
Packing them in Product innovation galore and plenty of pre-Eurobike glimpses into the future. Mark Sutton tours the CSG UK 2016 preview… “WE BELIEVE we could be the fastest growing established distributor.” That’s the bold, yet entirely possible, claim from CSG UK, which with its varied stock is riding the BMX rollercoaster, innovating with brands like Fabric and Charge and continuing to impress editors with a Cannondale brand that’s going from strength-to-strength. “Our revenue is up some 38 per cent year-on-year,” says marketing manager Clive Gosling. “The market is reportedly quite flat at present, so we’re pleased with that. Dealers are taking a keen interest in CSG too if registration to our 2016 preview is anything to go by. We’ve had over 40 per cent more pre-register this year. The venue grew slightly 26 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
concerned about numbers!” So, why were so many crammed into the Williams Conference Centre and what were the eye-catchers? Q HOFFMAN With ex-BMX champion and Ride UK founder Mark Noble now in charge of the brand’s product management in the UK, Hoffman’s line hits the most common price points, ranging £199 through £369 for the Ben Hennon signature Lady Luck build. As luck would have it, Hoffman are actually shifting quite a few of the higher-priced models on the back of the success of the frameset. The complete build offers a full cromo frame, removable brake mounts, full cromo tapered forks
and an on trend 8.75” high bar. 2.2” wide tyres, a half link chain and a three-piece crank further cement this as a build that won’t be needed upgrade right away. At the entry end, kids can start with the 18-inch wheeled Imprint. Q FABRIC The talking point before the show centred on Fabric’s new directly mounted bottle, currently available as a 500ml unit, but soon to go big with a 750ml offering, retailing from £9.99. That’s far from all from Fabric, however. Catching the eye of many visitors was the Chamber multi tool. This £35, 13-function unit offers a pocket sized ratcheting wrench that’ll service the majority of your customers nuts and bolts.
On to saddles and triathletes are in for a treat with the addition of the aptly-named Tri saddle at a massively competitive £50 for a steel railed unit or £70 for a titanium rail. Kitted out with a transition area hook and a bottle cage adapter, the package is almost too cheap. What’s more, as is the case throughout Fabric’s saddle line, there’s no stapling or glue, it’s all bonded. Elsewhere, the 155mm wide Cell, also at £49.99, offers similar technology found in the cushioning of some trainers, with multiple shaped and angle air pockets adapting the saddle to the rider’s shape. A great all comfort rounder for the price and with a surface that’ll wipe clean of mud in a mere instant. BIKEBIZ.COM

The plus size titanium Cooker
Cannondale’s Synapse Adventure
Q CHARGE Bigger tyres is the trend from Charge, whether it’s the 27 plus 3.8” tyres throughout the Cooker line, or the 42mm tyres now found on the Plug line. Charge’s Nick Larsen spoke enthusiastically about plus size mountain bike tyres, telling gathered dealers that they’ve been trialling the wider platform for longer than almost all other brands, to the point where the tyre manufacturers were using the brand for feedback on their early samples. “We were accidentally beating Strava times with out samples,” said Larsen. “We’re not using Boost tech, just a standard 155 rear end, so they’ll take a 29er wheel if BIKEBIZ.COM

desired. You’ll get all the best features of 26 and 29ers, but with more comfort, grip and suspension and starting at just £699, so we’re very competitive here.” There’s 26 models in this, the tenth year of Charge Bikes. Q CANNONDALE As expected, the Cannondale booth wasn’t short of interest, with the Slate given pride of place. Described by CSG as a very interesting addition to the catalogue, the Slate is branded “the most capable road bike you’ll find”. With a 30mm travel lefty fork and 42c wide tyres adorned to a 650b wheel, the £2,499 Slate is a go off the beaten track build for the curious rider.
Perhaps bigger news, however, is the new SuperSix Evo, which for 2016 has been given a complete overhaul with huge attention to detail on the frame to ensure every ounce of pedal power is maximised. Starting at £2,999 with Ultegra and ranging up to £6,999 for the Black Inc with Dura Ace, the SuperSix can tip the scales at as little as 5.8kg. There’s more, however, as there’s also a ‘Team Edition’ build with Dura Ace Di2 at £7,499 if your customer must go electronic. The off-road warrior is well catered for too, particularly with the Habit and its plus size tyred big brother. The Habit bikes are built around a short chainstay and low slung chassis with a 68 degree head
angle. Cannondale’s light Zero Pivot seatstays and ECS-TC Lockr pivots feature too, giving a stiff and capable all mountain experience on climbs and descents. The Bad Habit is largely the same angles-wise, but both the 1 and 2 models are built to accommodate 27.5+ tyres of up to 3-inches wide. To counter what would otherwise be sluggish handling, Cannondale has given these a 55mm fork rake. A Bad Habit 2 costs £2,000 with a RockShox Reba fork and shock, while the Bad Habit 1 upgrades to a Left 2.0 alloy fork and Monarch RL shock, as well as 1x11 Sram GX. Also designed from scratch to take three-inch wide rubber is the revived Beast of the East hardtails, of which three are now available, BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER 29

each with 120mm up front. Prices for these come in at £1,100, £1,600 and £2,100 for the Beast 1. Another notable addition to the Cannondale stable was the eyecatching Synapse Adventure with its noticeably quieter paint job and mudguards. At £1,299, this aluminium frame and carbon fork build will appeal to the commuter looking for quality or touring cyclist. Q GT GT is now set to offer a 75 bike strong catalogue in the UK. The Zaskar celebrates its 25th anniversary with GT’s designers having dedicated a large chunk of their time to updating the fan favourite. The trail-going hardtail now offers 120mm of travel, with a 30 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
bang on trend shortened cockpit and wider bar, with 1x11 gearing featuring on all builds from £949.99. There’s carbon too, with the £1,699 Elite offering a super slick and flush brake mount that is handily removable from the frame so as to not damage the most costly component during a crash or service. Perhaps most interesting of all the addition of the Verb fullsuspension bike, retailing from just £799.99. Based around GT’s former i-drive floating BB system, the bike offers 120mm of front and rear travel. The well-received Grade is now also available with a women’s geometry and narrower bars priced at £749.99.
For the customer unsure if they want to adopt drop bars, the Grade is now offered in three flat bar builds at £599, £699 and £799. Q SOMBRIO New and debuted in Oxfordshire, Canadian apparel label Sombrio is now in stock with CSG. There’s everything from technical mountain bike shorts, right through to casual jackets for both men and women. Designed to mix and match throughout, the range uses a set colour palate. Every short has a lift pass/key fob retention cord, double bar-tacked seams on stress points and anti-odour lining. Offering four categories – Freeride, Epik, Gravity and Cartel – there’s something for all riders.
Freeride is for everyday overmountain, enduro and trail hucking. Key pieces include the £40 Disciple Jersey and Pinner Shorts at £100. Epik is slightly more technical, tailored in fit, and works great for mixed trail use, with some extra features for those who climb hard before a thrilling descent. Gravity, is as it reads, all about going downhill. It’s bold, technical and built to last. Finally, Cartel is the fashionorientated range, with tees, riding jeans, caps and accessories. Check out the Riff Jeans at just £55 for some casual every day bike wear. Dealers who commit before the end of the year will benefit from what CSG says is a great sign up margin. cyclingsportsgroup.co.uk BIKEBIZ.COM

TREK
A whole new Trek World Boldly going forward where few bike brands have gone before, Trek is recording growth in women’s bike sales numbers, has more e-bikes and also lays claim to the most popular bike bought through Cyclescheme. In fact Jonathon Harker has plenty to report on from Milton Keynes-set Trek World… THIS TIME around, Trek invited the trade to its home town and the MK Dons stadium, which is fast becoming an industry favourite, for its Trek World event. Trek bought Electra back in 2014, so it was also opportunity to see Electra’s latest line-up too. The lifestyle brand’s electric bike – Townie Go – is switching to Bosch and has a revised frame. Like it’s non-electric Townie sister range, it uses flat foot technology – thanks to some unique frame angles, giving the rider an upright posture, wide view of the road and full extension of the leg during pedalling – the fact you can place a foot flat on the ground while in the saddle is a side effect. Another compelling side effect is that shops have fewer sizes to stock. There’s lots of lime green in the new range and more 20-inch bikes, including some designs that echo BIKEBIZ.COM
the full size versions, so parents and children can ride matching bikes. Amsterdam’s fashion-orientated range comes with new designs while the flagship Ticino 20D is one of Electra’s more pricey bikes, a more sporty bike that comes with eye-catching hammered alloy
While the samples didn’t come through early enough to make the show, Electra has a broader clothing line-up on the way, fittingly for a lifestyle brand. While it has run a few t-shirts in the past, this will be a much-expanded line-up, including hoodies, many more
Electra’s Ticino 20D sports smart vintage touches like hammered alloy guards. mudguards. The Loft range is effectively a more affordable version. t-shirts and absolutely no lycra, we are assured. SEASONED TREKKER The female market is big news for Trek. If you’ve been glued to BikeBiz.com you may have seen company boss John Burke recently
predicted that women’s bikes would make up 50 per cent of Trek turnover inside five years. Forecasts aside, Trek’s UK branch has seen 14 per cent growth in women’s bikes this year, which is interesting news for any bike shops out there still wondering if it’s worth tweaking their approach to bring in more female customers. There’s been upsurge in sales of smaller sized men’s models too and the brand is keen to help shops. Encouraging dealers not to pigeon-hole customers, Trek tells BikeBiz it visits dealers and rates how they appeal to the market, then offers help for them to address it. No doubt your Trek rep would happily fill you in on the details. There are new road shoes (Velocis, Meraj, Anara) and MTB footwear alike (Rovv Women’s, Tinari Women’s) and the excellently named OMW, or Old Man Winter. There’s change on the chamois front too, with a completely new development set to arrive spring/ summer 2016. The new tech will actually be largely hidden as there’s a flat top sheet, but we’re assured the new chamois has far less hot spots and has applied saddle thinking to the chamois itself. Style-wise there’s lots that is new too, with fresh styles, colours and designs that take their cue from the wider fashion world, rather than the bike ‘runway’. Trek has identified ‘Focus’ bikes that it predicts will be most popular with consumers with the vast swathes of gleaming new bikes. Fuel EX is Trek’s full sus race platform and a staple for the brand, featuring further trickle-down tech lower in the line-up. Lush is the women’s equivalent. Fast trail range Top Fuel has been reintroduced as

backed, with Trek singing the praises of Bosch’s service, dealer training and backup. Jack-of-all-trades Dual Sport is happy on the road and trail, and the most searched for bike on the Trek site, we’re told. Speaking of which, FX is one of Trek’s most popular ranges (the 7.1 is Cyclescheme’s most popular bike) and it has been revamped for 2016 with tube shapes borrowed from Trek’s road rides. The Fuel EX Jr is a new mountain bike for the junior market, the Domane 6.5 is now available with Project One customisation and the Lexa is available in a second colour – Miami Green – which is said to be a bit of a Marmite colour (though BikeBiz approves, you’ll doubtless be pleased to hear). CORE BIKE LIVE
Mondraker now offers plus size and three e-bikes
A summer core-ker Just shy of 350 retailers made it along to the debut summer CoreBike Live, with 70 per cent of those hitting the test tracks. Mark Sutton hit the show floor and has these highlights… Q ISON Introducing a number of new labels to its trade customers, Ison had plenty to shout about. First of all, Morgaw saddles brings three saddles in various iterations to the table, with options for XC, enduro and road now in stock. With each the customer can choose from soft, medium or hard elastomers to suit their preferred ride feel, while rails are changeable. An alloy railed saddle will come in at £90 and a carbon £120. There’s two new lighting labels within the stable too, each with its own USP. Orp is a USB rechargeable unit that pairs both a light and a safety horn with various sounds for a £50 price tag. A handlebar remote is available as an add on for £15. 36 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
Then there’s OwlEye, whose forte is solar energy. With the light charged during the day, this might be one for the all year round commuter. The smallest of the units comes in at £18 and has a 15-lumen output, as well as a swivel mounting bracket that can be applied to chainstays among other things. Also of interest on the lighting front is the SP dynamo hub at £90. Claiming to be the world’s smallest and lightest of its kind, it’s a no brainer for wheelbuilds. Disc versions are also available.

With cable routing slipping inside the frame, it’s very clean looking and, if desired, can still accommodate a double ring up front. There’s no eyelets, so this one’s designed with just one thing in mind, speed. Another nice feature comes in the form of a down tube that’s shaped to make it easier to shoulder up and over obstacles.

bar and stem combination. All bikes are supplied with two pairs of tyres to allow the bikes to be tailored to the customer’s intended use. Sticking with children’s bikes, Bobbin Bicycles has introduced some very attractive balance and younger kids’ bikes in soft blue and pink pastel colours. To make the balance bike even more child-friendly the top tube has a low step over, so there’ll be no accidents stepping on and off the bike. Last of all, highlights from Forme’s catalogue include two new gravel builds under the Hooklow banner, a heavy revamp to the popular £2,700 Stretto and fresh track and time trial builds hitting some very competitive price points given the spec. BIKEBIZ.COM
Q SILVERFISH Mondraker has made some big introductions for 2016, most notably, Silverfish will now have three off-road going electric bikes within its stable – the E-panzer fatbike, E-Vantage hardtail and E-Crafty full suspension. All in all, there’s a whopping 49 models in 63 derivatives for model year 2016 and if Core’s showing is anything to go by, they’re all very nicely finished. For those who had a soft spot for the Foxy, the 2016 Dune will be this year’s highlight. This now flagship 27.5 enduro rig will land in three builds – XR, RR and R – as well as a frameset. The DNA blends the Foxy and Summum downhill rigs, giving it big hit absorption, as well as the pedalling efficiency of the Foxy Carbon, delivered by a 1x11
drivetrain. Those attending Core Bike Live would have seen a cutaway of the frame, which looks as perfectly smooth on the inside as it does the outer. Plus size makes an appearance more than once in the range, but it’s the Vantage RR and 140mm full suspension Crafty that will be top of wish lists. Both sport a 3-inch tyre. The women’s line expands too, with three performance hardtails, alongside the £1,599 Factor Go. Sticking with very desirable bikes for women, the Yeti Beti ASRc is the firm’s lightest build, sporting handpicked components and custom tuned suspension with the female form in mind. Small and extra small builds will carry 27.5 wheels, while 29-inch wheels are suited to medium and large frames.
Q KONA Exploring deeper into nontraditional territory than ever before, Kona’s road offering is turning lots of heads. The £1,699 Reynolds 853 steel Roadhouse is one such drop bar build that’s delving into gravel road territory with its thicker tyre, carbon fork, flat mounted discs and beefed up frame. The 2016 Hei Hei is one of the more notable off-road builds, available in four 6061 aluminium builds, two of which jump down to 1x11 gearing. There’s the choice of Race or Trail setups, all rolling on 29-inch wheels and offering 100 (Race) and 120mm (Trail) of travel front and rear. A basic build will come in at £2,099, while the premium DL finish will cost £2,799. “Our factory think this is the BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER 39

Q CHICKEN CYCLEKIT Though the new Tifosi builds hadn’t quite made the Core show, 2016 bikes should now be in stock with Chicken CycleKit. As such the distributor used Core to show both the autumn/winter clothing, which many stockists will already have ordered, as well as the spring/summer collection for 2016. A key item for those who have yet to take winter stock is the Black X Warm, a £149.99 fully waterproof jacket that’ll cope with the worst of British weather. It’s perfect for before the real cold sets in, pitched as a lightweight ‘warm winter’ garment. There’s three large rear pockets, elastic cuffs and lots of 40 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
comfort built in around the neck and waist. Reflective detailing further adds to what is a solid value rainy day jacket. For ladies, the summer collection introduces the new £73.99 Agua bib that’s designed as a halterneck. Also worth a mention and necessary for the rainy season is the incoming Flinger reflective full coverage mudguards, costing £35 for the pair. Q WINDWAVE Heavily sampled by Core’s visitors was Windwave’s new over 35s dedicated nutrition label Elivar. Founded by two competitive runners, Elivar’s USP is tailored nutrition for the slightly older athlete, in particular the company has eyes on the typical sportive rider. The product itself has less
sugars than you’ll find in most nutrition product, instead concentrating on the slow release of proteins and carbohydrates, as well as electrolyte delivery with the Hydrate Plus product. What’s more, the product is all gluten and caffeine free. Point of sale material is supplied with a full stock up and Windwave is currently running an early stock up promotion. On to Transition and Windwave continues to do well with the UK favourite. From 2016 all will include a dropper post, adding value at the budget end, while cheaper complete builds will be offered across the board. Colnago’s CLX returns to the portfolio for MY16 and is now considered a top-choice, building in tech from the top-end V1-R. With

an oblique, oversized down tube, pairing a large bottom bracket area, power transfer is said to be incredible. Internal cable routing keeps the aesthetics very clean, while frame weight is kept down to a very respectable 950 grams. Q EXTRA Extra’s big news is that it has lured Maxxis back to UK shores with a new distribution link up. Stock is largely available now, with a few stragglers, including the Chronicle and Griffin 27.5+ tyres, on the way now. Hard packed mud season might be disappearing right now, but the Griffin 27.5, 2.4” wide has been a top seller on the downhill circuit in recent times. With travel adjustable between 8.5 and 9.5-inches and two levels of adjustable shock progression, the M16 is a versatile beast. Based around a Virtual Pivot Point platform, the US-made aluminium frame weighs in at 11.5 pounds for a large. Q VAARU Describing business as ‘flat out’ since we last laid eyes on a prototype in January, Vaaru was using Core Bike Live solely to recruit fresh stockists. Designed by James Beresford, formerly of USE/Exposure, the titanium specialist has each made in one of Taiwan’s experts in the precious metal, before custom 42 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
finishing here in the UK, offering anything from bead blasting to custom paintwork. Though Vaaru is currently selling around five mountain bikes to one road, the bikes added for the 2016 model year are tarmac goers, while a cyclocross build and a touring bike are on the drawing board at present. A 130/140 mm full suspension bike is also planned for the future. Vaaru’s Octane 6-4 frame, retailing at £2,199, is now the range topper for road goers. Made for the racing traditionalist, the 3AL/2.5V tubes have high stiffness and excellent resistance to fatigue, while the paired 6AL/4V tubing reduces the weight. A cheaper alternative is available in the V:8 at £1,699, which is designed to accommodate Di2
and perhaps better suited to the sportive rider than the racer. Beresford tells BikeBiz: “Though it’d be nice, I’m not asking dealers to carry stock, the margins are competitive and I’ll soon be able to offer a lighting brand too, so please get in touch if you’re interested in more information.” Q EBCO “We’re finally seeing signs that the market is going to be all that we predicted it would be, year-on-year we’re up 70 per cent in turnover,” says EBCO co-found Paul Stanforth. And with that in mind, house brand EBC is set to dramatically grow, with a whole new range set for launch in October. A taste of what’s to come was on show in the form of a Shimano Steps clad
build at £1,999, just shy of the £2,300 ceiling the brand will hit when the new builds come to the market. “Off road has been really driving interest in e-bikes,” added Stanforth. “They’re bringing an much younger and tech savvy demographic and in turn have got a whole range of people discussing e-bikes. It’s good for the market as a whole.” AVE highlights include the XH5 at £2,299. This 27.5 off road rig will easily clock a 40 to 50 mile off road range on average. Having just been bought out by Scott, Bergamont’s future distribution isn’t set in concrete, though Stanforth remains hopeful that the brand will remain within the electric specialist’s stable for the long-term future. CATEYE
Eyes to see you: CatEye says there is more to lights than simply measuring lumen
More than meets the Eye Think lumen is the be-all and end-all when it comes to cycle lights? CatEye believes that there’s much more to the bike illumination game than quoting numbers. The brand explains all to Jonathon Harker… CATEYE HAS long been educating the trade on the dangers of relying on quoted lumen when it comes to bike lights. While brands typically use lumen to get across how powerful their lights are, there are significant shortcomings with the system, CatEye is keen to point out. Simply quoting lumen fails to take into account that use of technology and quality of components and manufacture all help to determine light output quality, rather than a quoted lumen figure. A subtle point maybe, but CatEye believes that it produces lights that stand out from the competition and are visibly superior thanks to the components it sources and the tech it uses, so is understandly keen to keep shedding light on the topic. In-house, CatEye uses a Lumen Sphere to test lights and accurately measure output. It says: “Two different brands measuring the same lumen in a sphere can look very different ten metres out in front. This is where optics and reflective tech play a big role in actual quality of light for the rider.” Measuring light performance is also carried out by CatEye’s Photometric machines – the firm says it is the only bike light 44 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
manufacturer to posses such machinery, which accurately measure every tiny output of light at every angle, helping in-house boffins develop specific reflectors and outputs for specific lights and their intended use. Beam patterns are factored into making riders visible in low light. Rear lights are designed for 180-degree visibility and circumventing a narrow beam
Based in Osaka, Japan, the firm has its own manufacturing facilities in which to hone its craft and work on essentials like output regulation, essentially making sure lights don’t dramatically drop off in performance and plunge riders into darkness when the battery is nearing the end of its runtime, as with its Volt 6000. Other CatEye lights use tech to have a regulated drop off, meaning there is a gradual
“Two lights measuring the same lumen can look very different.” CatEye pattern accommodates for the fact that the majority of bike related incidents involving vehicles from the side on. The Rapid X series demonstrates this with a multimount fitting system and near 360-degree visibility that uses COB LED tech and advanced plastic moulding. BARE NAKED BATTERIES Founded in the ‘50s, CatEye has been in the LED bicycle light game since the 2001 and created its first flashing bicycle lamp in 1964.
drop in lumen over time rather than a maximum lumen for the first three minutes with a steep drop after this. By avoiding LED overdrive and heat issues, the firm’s lights side-step intense burn, hot spots or output drop offs, it adds. “CatEye manages risks better through clever circuitry that protects the battery and LED during charge and discharge, ensuring safety and longevity of components,” a spokesperson for the brand explains. When it comes to the Volt range, the brand uses
enclosed replaceable and interchangeable Li-ion batteries, so you can swap and interchange different batteries from a Volt 400 to a Volt 800, extending runtime for night time endurance cycling. And, handily for the UK, batteries are safely tucked away – obviously naked li-ion batteries can be dangerous, particularly in wet conditions. Waterproofing testing in-house is rigorous, BikeBiz is told, ensuring there’s no water ingress through switches and welds. Not surprisingly, the brand has channelled all this tech into its latest ranges. CatEye concludes: “Our 2015 lights incorporate this technology, research and understanding of varying consumer needs in our most comprehensive range yet. The Volt Series of front rechargeable lights now ranges from the Volt 100 up to the Volt 6000, representing great design and great value at every level, whether you want to see or be seen in the dark. “The Rapid Series of forward thinking rear lights has been further added to for 2015, providing a range of lights with unparalleled visibility.” CatEye is brought to the trade via distributor Zyro. www.zyrob2b.co.uk BIKEBIZ.COM

DMR
MODERN MACHINE: Threaded BB, more clearance and integrated dropper cabling
An icon returns They call it the ‘Grandfather of dirt’ and it was undisputedly a game changer for mountain bikers when launched in 1997. Mark Sutton talks to the DMR team about reviving the Trailstar for the modern day… TO THIS day they’ll surface on eBay. The launch of the Trailstar was, after all, a landmark moment for mountain bikers in the ‘90s. Before the brave revision of what a mountain bike’s geometry could look like, off-road hardtails were cross country hogs. Forget leaving the ground, riding like a grinning hooligan, or popping a half-decent wheelie. Prior to the Trailstar fun was earned, not guaranteed. Built to withstand the abuse that a lower standover positively encourages, the Trailstar became an instant favourite and in the very same year that the first v8s and V12 pedals came to fruition. Suddenly, DMR had the attention of the off-road world and plenty of eager-to-copy rivals. Roll forwards to 2015 and the Trailstar is set for another roll out, this time as a 27.5-wheeled beast, as well as a 2.8 (possibly 3”) plus size tyre capable version. Brand manager and team rider Olly Wilkins tells BikeBiz: “This is very much in the spirit of the 46 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
original, but with a modern twist. Originally we hadn’t banked on plus size tyres becoming a thing, but with a few revisions we’ve been able to accommodate the wider platform, should the customer want it – the only compromise being that
its design, but fun remains the priority. We’ve integrated cabling for a dropper, it’s ready for a 140/150mm fork, the clearance is obviously much wider too. We’ve opted for a threaded BB which is, in our opinion, a tried and tested
“We spent a long time perfecting it. Fun remain the priority.” Olly Wilkins, DMR it’s 1x11 only, but that seems to be the way things are going anyway.” 20 years on from launching its first product – a simple, yet effective chain tug that would have fitted a horizontal dropout mark one Trailstar – Wilkins says that the brand’s audience is now maturing. There’s more than just a nod to the past, however. “We spent a long time perfecting the finish, which on the blue frame will resemble our first production run’s graphics. It’s very different in
answer and it’s a very affordable, yet durable frame at £499.99,” says Wilkins. The most noticeable change over the original is a standoverboosting swooping top tube, which on larger sizes carries a brace to keep things robust. The rear end remains short and responsive, even with plus size tyre accommodation, though a +8 adapter is available separately, if so desired. “Being a steel bike, lightness hasn’t been a priority, but it’s still
very respectable. Like the original it’s built to be handed down the generations, or to be a backup for riders who don’t want to go out and wreck their super pricey carbon bike in winter. Interestingly, while at Upgrade Bikes HQ the topic of sales direct to consumer came up, the retailer remains key for the brand, explains Damian Mason. “We have in the past tabled it for discussion, but you cannot underestimate the importance of a retailer, we can see the value, despite pressure from competitors. With that in mind we’ve just upgraded our B2B to make it a lot easier to sell frames like the Trailstar as complete builds, or at least 80 per cent of one. “Our customers can now log on and produce a custom build in front of the customer, with or without prices shown. With the likes of X-Fusion, TRP, Praxis and many others we can offer some excellent build options.” dmrbikes.com BIKEBIZ.COM

It’s hard not to think of cycling’s glorious 2012 Olympics when you visit the Lee Valley Velodrome. Feeding off that warm glow, i-ride chose the venue for its latest Velodrome Tour. Jonathon Harker reports from Stratford... I-RIDE’S THREE-date Velodrome Trade Tour reached the auspicious surroundings of 2012 Olympics venue Lee Valley Velopark last month, sandwiched between showings around the nation at Manchester and then Newport. First up, in-house brand Orro has launched the custom Signature series. As the name suggests, customers can literally get their signatures plastered to the frame (a new take on security bike marking, maybe) and the team can colour match virtually anything – but ideally with a splash of gold to keep it consistent with the Orro range. The team told BikeBiz that Signature bikes are hand painted at the Sussex HQ and are “something special and something that we are proud of”, pointing out that Orro delivers branded components at a reasonable price point. Orro’s new Terra Gravel range includes a model which may come in at the cycle to work threshold (TBC). There are three main models including two alloys and one BIKEBIZ.COM

BikeBiz first came across Pioneer in a cycle context at Interbike in 2012. It’s not been the most visible brand in the UK cycle market, but now the household name’s foray into cycling will get a boost thanks to a new distribution deal with
Michelin-designed soles, a grippy option that helps stop riders slipping off pedals, even if they aren’t clipped in. There are new colours throughout the range and more of those micro-release dials that allow for minimal adjustments, particularly for when feet swell during long rides. The shoe range
makes use of proprietary tech, including Northwave’s own closure system, and the range is still made in Italy with, it says, reliable sizing. Ventilation holes are now laser cut, so NW’s squeezed more of them in. And it’s worth watching out for super reflective materials that show up in the range, especially under headlights, using the logic that a moving reflective object is especially visible. Speedplay soles are used in the range too, helping pedalling efficiency thanks to keeping the foot closer to the axle. On the Fulcrum stand were the first UK showing of the new carbon clinchers, the latest edition of the Racing 5 disc. You thought judging for the BikeBiz Awards all happened behind closed doors and you had to be a close personal friend of the BikeBiz team to be involved? Absolutely not. If you’re in the bicycle industry then you’re eligible to be a judge for the BikeBiz Awards. All you have to do is let us know you are up for it at BikeBiz@nbmedia. com and we’ll send you an email with the choices. Then all you do is reply to the email with your choices and that’s it. NB: Failure to volunteer as a judge means you are officially unable to groan/eye roll at any of the winners when they are announced on the night. It’s like complaining about the government without using your vote, only possibly less serious. Platinum Sponsor for the 2015 BikeBiz Awards is Cycleguard. Both Rozone and Cycle Republic are individual award sponsors. Contact Richard Setters at rsetters@nbmedia.com or on 01992 535647 for more details. BIKEBIZ.COM

HOW DO YOU MEASURE RETURN ON INVESTMENT?
OPINION TAKE A LOOK at the above image, snapped at the August Boyley Jam (held in memory of former local rider Richard Ball) at White Rock skatepark in Hastings. It’s one taken totally at random, in fact, the focal point would have been the sea, cropped out at the top. It’s a bit Where’s Wally-esque, in that there’s a really quite random selection of characters – from a chap in the foreground with an excellently groomed mohawk, to a child who appears to be wearing some kind of psychedelic melon stunt jersey. And no, I’m not about to spend 450 words taking the piss, variety is the spice of life, as they say. It’s the BIKEBIZ.COM
evidence within the image that’s intriguing. Evidence that BMX riders often also grow to own and ride road bikes. Evidence that scooter riders, skateboarders and indeed anyone watching will be influenced by and often subsequently embrace bike culture. There’s two media types in the pic too. Three if you count me. This multi-distributor and retailer sponsored event will be seen far and wide in pictures and video, reaching an even broader audience.
“Grassroots events contribute more than we can put a value on.” Cycling is a broad church and it’s getting broader thanks to grassroots events and facilities like these. Which leads me in a roundabout way to my point – have you campaigned for the cause lately? Perhaps you’ve spoken with the local MP or town councillor about what they’re doing to combat obesity in the local area?
Cycle to school rates have doubled in some London boroughs with a little help from Bikeability training. Is there scope for a series of bike doctor events with your local schools to encourage kids to use their bikes? Is there a skate park or racetrack that’s too small for its audience in town? Make a solid case for an expansion and hold a jam alongside other local businesses to push awareness and funding. As shown in Hastings, the sky is the limit, with diverse funding sources gathered from the Government’s Play Pathfinder scheme, the fundraising efforts of the Boyley Trust Fund and council contributions. At the Boyley Jam there were countless families from around town watching both locals and shipped in pros perform in a series of competitions. The noise of the crowd and smiles on young faces suggest to me that such events contribute more than we’ll ever be able to put a value on when it comes to shoring up the future of the cycling business. msutton@nbmedia.com

Silverfish is soon to have stock of a Yeti Beti range, designed for women who don’t mind an off-road tear up. The Yeti Beti range includes a version of the media awardwinning SB5c (27.5) and the widely acclaimed ASRc (27.5 and 29). All “touch-points” on the bikes have been tweaked
such as WTB Diva saddle, smaller diameter grips, and narrower handlebars (although, in the spectrum of handlebar widths, they are still relatively wide at 720mm). Yeti also reduced the crank length from 175mm to 170mm. Prices are £5799 for the SB5c and £5199 SRP for the ASRc.
RENTHAL INTEGRA STEM Ison Distribution course a full sublimation print in the strong, refined and premium Glengoyne style. Best of all, the Whisky makers are just a few miles away from a new Endurafunded mountain bike hub that will teach underpriviledged kids the joys of cycling.
Renthal has introduced an updated version of the Integra stem, which retains the lightweight six-bolt design and handlebar cradle of the original, in a new stiffer package. Demand from World Cup teams and from consumers was to offer rise options. Modification of the original Integra to add
height was not effective, so the stem had a from the ground up revamp. The design process also proved that dedicated sizes resulted in a far superior product. The new Integra has been designed in four dedicated sizes, to offer 45mm and 50mm lengths, both available with either zero or +10mm rise. BIKEBIZ.COM

ELECTRIC BIKES
Leicester City bids for electric City aims to use central government cash to set up e-bike hubs and boost electric bike usage amongst locals LEICESTER CITY Council and the city’s own sustainable travel specialist Go Travel Solutions have teamed up to bid for DfT cash to develop e-bike hubs. Aiming to attract some of the £500,000 funds the Department for Transport has made available to areas outside London for such transport schemes, the bid has been backed by the University of Leicester, Leicester College, Highcross Leicester and East Midland Trains – e-bike hubs would be set up in those locations should it be successful. Aiming to overcome the relatively high cost of e-bikes (the average price of a bike in the UK is circa £230), a hire system will make them available to more of the population and speed up their adoption, it is hoped. The shared EAPC (Electronically Assisted Pedal Cycles) programme is managed by Carplus – an organisation that supports sustainable travel. Carplus will allocate funding for the DfT.
“If we are successful with the bid, Leicester will be able to demonstrate how electric bikes could be used to help business travel, travel to work and travel from the railway station,” commented Andrew Smith, director of planning, transportation and economic development at Leicester City Council.
“We’ve already completed a lot of work to make getting around our city easier by joining up pedestrian networks and cycle ways as part of our Connecting Leicester programme. “Electric bikes represent another option for sustainable transport to help people get around the city, and it’s an option this bid could
help us to explore much more thoroughly.” Robin Pointon, Go Travel Solutions MD, added: “The benefits of electrically assisted pedal cycles are manifold but the purchase price has traditionally proven to be a real barrier to growth. A successful bid for the shared EAPC programme will help Leicester to speed up the adoption of electric bikes as a viable and effective mode of sustainable travel. “Being invited to apply for this funding is a demonstration of the value of the Smartgo business network and the strengths of the strong public-private sector partnership in place,” he added. Go Travel Solutions is a specialist sustainable transport consultancy serving businesses, public bodies and transport operators. Should the bid be successful, local electric bike specialist retailers could be in line to benefit from a heightened awareness and adoption of electric bikes. www.go-travel-solutions.com
‘No more commercial MTBs without electric motors’ MARC FAUDE, manager of the Focus brand for huge German bike firm Derby Cycles has made the bold claim that the commercial MTB market will move away from non-electric models within a decade. While electric bikes are taking an ever larger share of the European cycle market, the claim still sounds like a big one. Faude said: “In ten years, there will no more commercial mountain bikes without electric motors.” Focus’ latest e-MTB, the Jarifa i29, is ‘barely distinguishable from a sleek racing hardtail’, according to the brand, with the battery integrated into the downtube. Retailing at £109.99, Bob Elliot’s recommendation for the months ahead is Funkier’s WJ-1322 Soft Shell. Available in an obviously reflective silver and black design, this one’s designed to strike a balance between windproofing, water resistance and breathability. It’ll not keep you absolutely dry in the worst of downpours, but it will at least deflect the cold and keep out the average shower.

Santini has a number of garments that’ll work excellently when paired with others in the line or just as good on their own. The Beta line is one such example, with Gore Windstopper fabric employed on both the jersey, jacket and armwarmers. The jacket is designed to combat winter’s worst, deflecting rain and claiming to offer two times more breathability than its closest competitor’s garment. The four-way stretch thermo fleece regulates temperature.
Proviz has made quite a name for itself in recent times with the unmissable in headlights Reflect360 products. New for winter, the Reflect360+ jackets and gilets are a more technical version of the highly popular 100 per cent reflective original best sellers. Increased attention to detail on the tailoring and fit, along with a new material that gives a higher breathability rate, are just some of the new features.

Four-inch thick award book owning X-Bionic has plenty to offer the cyclist with a budget for the best. A highlight of this year’s range is the improved Energizer MK2 long sleeve jersey. With an enlarged 3D-BionicSphere system (an area that makes the rider sweat in order to cool the body faster), this jersey offers compression and is suitable for a wide temperature range. “WHY ARE
THINGS SO QUIET?”
STAR COMMENT This month the lucky winner will receive a Commuter X4 personal illumination system…
@bikebizonline Last month we ran a straw poll to see how independent bike dealer business has been so far in 2015. Of the respondents, 32 per cent said they were significantly down on sales, with some saying they’d had lower footfall in the first half of the year. We received a letter through the post from a reader who found the figures troubling… Sir, The recent ‘Straw Poll’ figures (BikeBiz August, issue 115) may appear to give some satisfaction to a certain proportion of the trade reporting an increase in bike sales. But what should give cause for concern is that over half of those polled (56 per cent) claim no increase at all. Considering a huge number (32 per cent) of those polled report a serious downturn in sales, then surely that must stand closer scrutiny as to the possible reasons. Being a very friendly, wide contact trade, personal experiences and situations are easily shared and the talking point this year is “why are things so quiet?” And, no conclusive answers. As with many outdoor activities, the weather does play a major part, and many cold, wet weekends this year have not helped. That apart led many to observe the increasing number of our own suppliers and importers that are selling direct to the public via their ‘own
brand’ outlets or at least some having seasonal direct sales. Does that indicate over production and supply of bicycles chasing fewer customers? For many IBDs, there may or may not be the resultant serving and aftermarket gains, as many purchasers feel obliged to return to the original point of sale. ‘Bikes for work’ have helped a certain segment of the trade, but allegations of abuse abound. Is a £1,000 carbon fibre product really for travelling to work? And there are claims that children’s bikes are being bought this way too. Surely this is not within the spirit in which it was meant. Maybe there should be a more sensible limit? Some IBDs have ceased selling new bikes and turned to second hand and/or components only. The numbers game leaves many wanting. Leon Stimpson, brand manager, Moore Large What bikes do you own? I own a road bike, mountain bike and a BMX. I try and divide my time equally, but at the moment my road bike seems to be getting the most attention. I like to ride in places as remote as possible, whether it be the sweeping lanes of the Peak District, the dusty/muddy (depending on the time of the year) tracks in south Derbyshire, or a set of trails in the woods.
CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN (FOR 12 HOURS) Ever wondered what it feels like to climb a mountain for 12 hours? Look no further than the expression on the faces of Steve and Tony Collins, owners of Athlon Sport. The duo broke the World Record for most feet climbed in 12 hours, all while raising money for Alex Dowsett’s ‘Little Bleeders’ – a charity supporting sufferers of haemophilia. Backed by Fondriest, Rotor, Continental and Campag, they broke the world record by 100metres (9,382.5m to be precise). You can find the Just Giving page at http://t.co/EfDWtjRlAk
DEDICATION’S WHAT YOU NEED
How did you get into the cycling trade? I was 15 years old, sat in school with my careers adviser and she said: “Sorry, I can’t find you a work experience placement with a carpenter what else are you interested in?” Bikes, I said, and it all started from there. Shortly after I got offered a Saturday job, which turned to full time when I left school. I did this for 16 years until starting as a product manager at Moore Large in January 2014. Describe your role at Moore Large: I look after many different brands here at Moore Large from Onguard locks to Polisport child seats and mudguards to BMX components from Haro, Premium, Social, Box and Promax. This means my job can be varied day-to-day. What projects are keeping you busy at present? We have various projects at the moment, but one in particular is the development of Onza MTB product. We have recently launched Onza into the MTB sector with two steel hardtails, two frames and a range of finishing kit accessories. I have been solely responsible for the development of the accessories and produced a range of bars, stems, seat posts and pedals that offer highest quality at the right price. I have also brought back the classic Onza Ules and Porcipaw grip using the same original mould, but now in a lock on design. Any standout goods from Box this year? Box is well known for BMX race components, but this year also launched a MTB range, including a unique pair of 35mm carbon handlebars, unlike anything else and, with weights starting from 165 grams, they are also some of the lightest. Look out for MTB rear derailleurs and shifters early 2016.

What is that new record, we hear you cry? Why it is 4,821.40 watt hours, equal to 646 miles – cycling more than the equivalent straight line distance from Land’s End to John O’ Groats. In one hour. Breeze organised the attempt with Matrix Fitness Bikes. Breeze says it has helped 254,000 more women cycling regularly on Britain’s roads. www.goskyride.com/Breeze

’S INSIGHT CYCLE TRADER
WINTER IS COMING IT IS hard to believe, but summer is almost over and the colder commuting season is looming. Now is the time to make the most of that seasonal shift with cycle to work’s allowable accessories. Our data shows that the average value of an accessory package – without a bike – purchased at one time is around £500. Safety equipment, defined as equipment that assists you to cycle to work safely is all allowable through cycle to work, but not items such as a GPSenabled cycling computer. Nearly half of adults have access to a bike, and there are three key opportunities you can make the most of. Firstly, there are over half a million Cycleschemers who have already taken part in the scheme, and can return for
accessory packages. Secondly, there are people with perfectly good bikes who may have thought the cycle to work scheme was not for them, but would be interested in updating some accessories. Finally, cycle to work is also ideal for up-selling to someone interested in accessories, but worried about the cost, e.g. when someone is planning to spend about £100 on a light, you can show them how to get a light worth around £150. Don’t take just our word for it about accessories though. Luke Ludwell at Avon Valley Cyclery said: “Over the past decade we’ve sold tonnes of Cyclescheme bikes. The next big opportunity is clearly in accessories, as we work to keep those riders in the saddle.”

Let them eat e-bikes “I-don’t-want-to-ride-up-hills” objection has been solved – “just buy an electric bike.” Carlton Reid is far from convinced. I LIVE in Newcastle but I write about London lots, and that’s because a lot goes on there, especially now and especially concerning bicycling. It’s inspiring to see London’s new cycle infrastructure taking shape. Folks I follow on Twitter post regular updates of the building work going on, sharing smartphone photographs of the latest developments. Yes, this is #kerbnerdery but it’s also an appreciation that, at long last, cyclists are being catered for in the UK with very wide and direct cycleways. The protected infrastructure being built on the Embankment, close to the Houses of Parliament, is the most inspiring of all of the capital’s cycleways because this will be seen every day by the powers-that-be. Such in-yer-face infrastructure may lead to copycat cycleways in other parts of the UK: “if even motor-choked London can do it, we can do it.” Of course, this one of the key reasons why London is getting £1 billion worth of cycle infrastructure over the next ten years – without it London will grind to a halt. In many other British cities congestion may be bad at times but it’s not – yet – at London levels of perma-gridlock. Newcastle, for instance, gums up on certain roads at certain times of the day but the extensive (and ugly and disfiguring) urban motorway network means that during the rest of the day it’s quick and easy to nip around in a car. When it’s this easy (and convenient and comfortable) there’s little incentive to use other transport modes. Newcastle’s

urban rail network – the Metro – is wonderful but, still, many people prefer to duke it out in their cars on the free-flowing roads. It’s important to stress not everybody has access to a car. A third of British adults (and 100 percent of British kids) don’t have driving licences. Many people rely on either public transport, or on bikes. For all of the talk about MAMILs and hipsters on fixies, there are an awful lot of lowincome people who, invisibly, use bikes for everyday transport. They may buy and ride BSOs, bicycle-

shaped objects, but they’re riding nevertheless, although often not out of choice. Chances are they would be the most to benefit from extensive networks of cycleways but impoverished areas won’t get cycle infrastructure as quickly as gentrified areas. To certain social groups travelling by bicycle is seen as low status. Supermarket BSOs are cheap and often nasty, but they are bought in huge numbers, bringing the average price of a UK bicycle down to £233. In the Netherlands the average price is three times this, which is one of the key reasons why electric bikes sell in the Netherlands but don’t sell in huge numbers in the UK. But according to some bicycle advocates electric bikes eliminate a key British objection to cycling: hills. On Twitter, I was told in all seriousness by a number of advocates, that electric bikes will get the masses into cycling because people can now ride up hills sweatfree. As most electric bikes cost £1000+ – four times the average cost of a bike, and five or six times the cost of a supermarket BSO – this is let-them-eat-cake thinking. It would be great for bike shops if Brits did spend more on bikes but there’s a cultural antipathy to such spending as evidenced by the often-heard phrase “you spent how much on a bike? I could buy a second-hand car for that.” Cycling’s cultural cache is definitely on the up and up in the UK but telling a BSO buyer that their hilly commute to work would be eased by the purchase of an electric bike isn’t going to fly for a few years yet.
