How far we’ve come IN THE TECH community we can be accused of sometimes being a bit blasé about the latest gadgets. While some people (my parents included) are just about getting their heads around on-demand TV, we are sat here pontificating about the future of things like virtual personal assistants and augmented reality. Casting an eye back to the first ever Consumer Electronics Show back in 1967 (which took place in New York City in June, rather than the now-standard January in Las Vegas), the 200 exhibitors showed off the latest pocket radios and integrated circuit-equipped TVs. The following year’s highlight was a ‘Portable Executive Telephone’ that costed $2,000 (a little over $14,000 in 2017 with inflation). It weighed 8.6 kg and required an FCC license to operate.

Scanning through the years, CES is full of tech debuts. Some of which stuck around to today, and others which have fallen by the wayside. 1970 saw the VCR; 1985’s show featured a debut for the Nintendo Entertainment system; CES 1996 launched the DVD; and 2010 saw 3D TVs centre stage. All of these different technologies that we view as relics were launched at CES, and there’s no doubt that all the things we see as high-tech at CES 2017 will be looked as cute trinkets from the past 10, 20, or 50 years down the line. I have absolutely no idea what CES 100 will look like in 2067, or if there’ll even be a CES in 50 years time, but people will always innovate and technology will advance as long as there are people who are passionate about creating new and exciting shiny things. So going back to that very first CES in 1967, it’s remarkable to think how far we’ve come… as I type this on a 4k retina display. Jonathan Easton, Editor jeaston@nbmedia.com

Millions and millions of pixels What’s so exciting about the new update to HDMI? Jonathan Easton takes a look at the new tech standard… BACK IN the day we had RGB, then we had SCART, and now we are in the era of HDMI. In order to make sure that it won’t be supplanted, the industry body responsible for HDMI has announced a first draft of the standard’s next set of specifications with the big selling point being support for 8K video. To build on that a bit, the HDMI Forum announced that HDMI 2.1 will support 8K video with HDR at a 60Hz refresh rate, or 4K video at a 120Hz refresh rate. In terms of

products for photo and design professionals that cost far more than any casual consumer could stomach. One of the most interesting aspects of HDMI 2.1 is something called ‘Game Mode VRR’, which supports a variable refresh rate and, according to the group, allows a graphics processor to display an image on screen “the moment it is rendered”. The HDMI Forum has suggested that HDMI 2.1 will see a release in the second quarter of 2017.

raw numbers, 4K resolution is 3,840 x 2,160 or 8.3 million pixels, while 8K is 7680 x 4320 or 33 million pixels. That’s a lot of pixels. However, don’t expect this to lead to the wide release of 8K TVs any time soon. Like all new A/V tech specs, this is very much for the future. 4K has only recently become common, and 8K is a fair few years away from hitting screens. We’ve seen a few 8K TVs and monitors enter the market, but they are either prototypes or specialist

Intel’s tiny IoT platform

Targus’ touching tech MODULAR MOBILE phones might have been all the hype a couple of years ago, but Intel has decided to go one step further by creating its own modular compute platform called the Intel Compute Card. Okay, so out of the box this thing isn’t going to run Doom or, really, be able to do anything, as is the nature of modular things. But what is the credit card-sized platform for? Essentially, the Intel Compute Card has all the elements of a full computer including Intel SoC, memory, storage, wireless connectivity,

up to 7th Gen Intel Core processors and a range of flexible I/O solutions that manufacturers can optimise for their particular solutions – from interactive refrigerators and smart kiosks to security cameras and IoT gateways. The Compute Card will give more manufacturers the freedom to create connected devices without having to think about how to get a computer to fit in their toaster (for example), and should lead to a lot more companies getting into the growing connected devices market.

TOUCHSCREEN TECHNOLOGY has radically altered the way that we interact with devices, but touchscreens have been unable to truly replicate the sense of human touch. Now, Tanvas wants to give users the ability to not just see and manipulate what’s on the screen, but also to feel it. At its CES booth, Tanvas showed off a few sample applications to demonstrate its capabilities. For example, Bonobos, the apparel company which is partnered with Tanvas, showed two pairs of trousers – one cotton and one corduroy. You’d then

rub the screen and feel the fabric. It is admittedly not too precise and doesn’t exactly feel like a textile, but it does give a good sense of how smooth it is. Traditional haptic feedback relies on vibrations, and the company says that TanvasTouch technology uses electromagnetic pulses to send more precise responses to your fingertip. Should this tech take off, haptic feedback could become a vital part of the ever growing online retail space, and give users a more compelling etail experience.

Falling sales for the high street as more shoppers turn online BRITISH HIGH street retailers suffered through a fourth consecutive festive period of falling sales, according to consultancy firm BDO. Sophie Michael, head of retail at BDO, which surveyed more than 70 retailers including several mid-sized chains, said: “December 2015 was the worst trading month since 2008 and anything below that was always going to be a big disappointment.” While the high street dipped 0.1 per cent in December, after a fall of 5.3 per cent 12 months earlier, online retailers saw huge growth of 19 per cent for the month. In the week before Christmas sales shot up a

“December 2015 was the worst trading month since 2008. Anything below that was always going to be a big disappointment.” Sophie Michael, BDO massive 51 per cent year-onyear. BDO puts online trade growth down to an increase in certainty from shoppers that last-minute purchases would be delivered on time.

The growth of online shopping however is down to more than just improved delivery, according to cofounder and CMO at Global-e, Europe’s leading cross-border

eCommerce specialist Nir Debbi: “In the year ahead, British retailers will continue to become more attractive to online buyers. Due to ongoing weakening in the

value of sterling following the Brexit vote, British products have become cheaper to those buying in a different currency.” To harness the online opportunity and increase international revenue postBrexit, retailers will need to consider how they can improve the online experience for overseas customers. Retailers can do this by offering local payment methods, a wider choice of delivery options and local returns, and more transparent pricing, with full delivery costs and tax included. In doing so, they are likely to see an increase in international sales and much more favorable conversion rates.”

Phone, tablet and PC shipments to remain flat in 2017, increase in 2018 GLOBAL SHIPMENTS of PCs, tablets, ultramobiles and mobile phones are projected to remain flat in 2017, according to a new report from Gartner. Total shipments are expected to hit 2.3 billion in 2017, the same as 2016. There were a huge number of phones, tablets and PCs in use in the world by the end of 2016 – seven billion to be precise – but the research firm doesn’t expect any growth in shipments of traditional devices until 2018 when a small increase in ultramobiles and mobile phone shipments is expected. “The global devices market is stagnating. Mobile phone shipments are only growing in emerging Asia/Pacific markets, and the PC market is just reaching the bottom of its decline,” said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. “As well as declining shipment growth for

traditional devices, average selling prices are also beginning to stagnate because of market saturation and a slower rate of innovation,” added Atwal. “Consumers have fewer reasons to upgrade or buy traditional devices. They are seeking fresher experiences

and applications in emerging categories such as head mounted displays (HMDs), virtual personal assistant (VPA) speakers and wearables.” This will do nothing to allay the concerns of a PC market that is currently in the longest period of decline in its history. Gartner however notes that

the market will benefit from a replacement cycle toward the end of this forecast period, returning to growth in 2018. The traditional PC’s decline will be complemented by the growth of ultramobile devices that are becoming more functional, affordable and attractive to consumers.

The mobile phone market will also benefit from replacements. The firm notes however that there is a difference in replacement activity between mature and emerging markets. “People in emerging markets still see smartphones as their main computing device and replace them more regularly than mature markets,” said the director. Device vendors are increasingly trying to move into faster-growing and emerging device categories. “This requires a shift from a hardware-focused approach to a richer value-added service approach,” concluded Atwal. “As service-led approaches become even more crucial, hardware providers will have to partner with service providers, as they lack the expertise to deliver the service offerings themselves.”

THE BIG INTERVIEW

Lenovo gets smart 2016 saw the launch of the groundbreaking Lenovo Yoga book among other products for the company. Jonathan Easton speaks to Lenovo’s director of product marketing Philip Oldham about what the company showed off at CES and what it has up its sleeves next…

H

ow was CES? It’s been another great year for us at CES. We are up to 58 awards, so another great awards haul for us this year coming off the back of IFA where we already got a significant amount of awards there. It’s extremely exciting that we’re able to bring new and innovative products to the market that are really capturing people’s attention. All of UK retail still goes, so it’s a great way for us to meet up with a lot of our retail partners over a short few days. I think the new launches we had at CES can be put into five key categories. We launched some new B2B products, some new gaming products, a new detachable product and we, excitingly, launched some smart home devices and VR products. Talk us through Lenovo Legion and the company’s decision to get into gaming. It is a big growth market and it’s a market where the users are particularly discerning about the quality and the level of technology used within the products. It always has to be the latest and best graphics card, the latest and fastest memory, hard drive, SSD – all those kinds of things. I always

14 | PCR February 2017

think of it rather like many other hobbies like golf or photography. Once you get into it, you want to buy the best kit you can afford – even if you’re not that good yourself. If I’d want to go and play golf I’d get the best golf clubs I could afford, even though the level of my golf game does not warrant those clubs whatsoever. I think to a certain extent there’s that in gaming. There’s a real drive towards getting up to date with technology in order to give gamers a better chance of being successful in the games they play. We’ve launched a new brand for our gaming range called Legion by Lenovo. As part of that range, we’ve now got a full range of products

“We’re really excited about the range of gaming products we’re offering.” Phillip Oldham, Lenovo going right the way from the traditional gaming tower to a new gaming Cube product that’s almost like a portable tower for people who want to do a LAN party but still want the flexibility of a desktop chassis. We’ve even brought out a gaming all-in-one product where everything is built into the monitor for people who don’t want the cumbersomeness of a physical tower. What we launched at CES were our new clamshell devices: the Y920, the Y720

and Y520. What’s exciting for us, particularly on the 720 is that we are the first product to market with Dolby Atmos sound. It’s exciting for us to be first to market with Atmos. On the Y920 we go up to 64GB of memory, and we’ve even got internal water cooling. It’s got all the usual stuff like overclockable CPU, intelligent LAN Wi-Fi, backlit keyboards and all that kind of good stuff that the gamers love. A lot of development has gone into our gaming products. We’re really excited about the range we’re offering and the level of power and graphics that is available now because it gives a really awesome experience. You also earlier mentioned smarthome devices which were undoubtedly a big part of CES 2017. Yes, the last few years have seen that part of the market really booming. It’s been a big focus area of consumer electronics for a while and Lenovo has set up a separate business unit that’s all about incubating new technology start ups, new ideas and new innovative products to make sure that we continue to innovate across not just our PC business but also smart home and cloud devices. We are acutely aware that this part of the market is going beyond hardware. It’s all about device and cloud, interactivity, and giving users the best experience. As a result of this, we’re launching our own smart devices. These are being launched in North America to begin with but we are gauging interest in the UK for a potential UK launch later in the year. The two key devices

www.pcr-online.biz

THE BIG INTERVIEW

we launched at CES were the Lenovo Smart Assistant and the Lenovo Smart Storage. The Smart Assistant is a product that is based around the Alexa technology. Essentially it’s a connected device with eight far-field microphones built into it so it can do a 360-degree pickup of a voice up to five metres away. It gives you the opportunity to get info, control devices around the home, order your pizza, order an uber. Whatever you want to do essentially. We’re launching two levels of this device. The standard level, in three separate colours, and a premium Harman Kardon speaker edition as a higherend product. If you look at how these products are built up, a lot of what’s inside is computer based. You’ve got an atom processor in there, you’ve got 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage. It’s practically a small computer and that fits right into Lenovo’s product development and manufacturing strengths. The second smart product we launched was our Smart Storage device which is effectively a NAS drive. It, again, plays into our strengths with the onboard computing power, celeron processor, 2GB of RAM, Wi-FI and 6TB SATA www.pcr-online.biz

HDD, and it has some really cool features. For example, it will automatically organise your photos through face detection so the onboard computing power can sort through the photos and identify the same people in photos and organise them itself. You can remotely access the drive, and there’s autosync facilities so it can actually auto backup data from your phone or tablet and then file that by the type of content within the backup. We’re launching these first in North America and gauging interest for a UK launch. Why is it that, after Siri, Google’s assistant and Cortana amongst others, Alexa has suddenly become the platform that has spread? The key to success to all of these things is the interoperativity with other systems, applications and devices. The reason why we’re working with Alexa is partly down to the number of APIs and agreements they’ve got with other apps and other companies is such that it makes it a very useful device. Being cloud-based, these apps are being added all the time. The breadth of functionality you get is extremely good and that’s what makes or breaks these

types of products. If you’ve got a smart assistant and you find it only works with a small number of devices or a small number of external suppliers that you might use at home then it only has very limited attraction. But as soon as you start to ramp that up and have more companies and

“I think it would be very strange if anybody didn’t expect to see more variations of [Yoga Book] coming out in the next year.” Phillip Oldham, Lenovo devices that are working with your product then you start to get a real breakthrough. Google remains a strong partner with us and you’ll see more Google partnership devices in this smart area over the next year from Lenovo for sure as well. How has the Yoga Book done and has it met your expectations?

Yoga Book has probably even surprised us with our expectations in terms of sales, the user feedback and the customer experience that we’ve been witnessing. I think it’s really surpassed all of our expectations. We’ve only been selling this product since September 2016 and we’ve already done over half a million units globally in terms of sales. It won an award at CES – the CES Best of Innovation award this year – and a lot of people are excited because there has been a lack of innovation in the PC/Laptop market and the Yoga Book has really been seen as a groundbreaking device. As a really strong companion device people have found that it’s really flexible and easy to use. I even use one myself for meeting notes and travelling, and I find it a really useful product. Which version – Android or Windows – are people gravitating towards? It’s really interesting because we’ve seen a difference based on the country. Globally it’s 50:50. In the UK to date it’s more like 60:40 towards Windows. People at the start have been associating this device as a Windows laptop for

travelling, and that at the beginning is what has pushed the Windows OS quite strongly. Having said that, I’ve used both devices and the proposition on Android is also very strong, especially for people who use Androidbased phones. The familiarity with Android plus all the apps you’ve got for note taking and productivity, means that it’s a really strong option as well. And, of course, it’s slightly cheaper than the Windowsbased one as well, so I expect it to rebalance in the UK. Can you give us any insight into the future of the Yoga Book? Without going into any secrets, I think it doesn’t take a genius to work out the type of direction we might go in with this product. It’s a very successful form factor and people are really enjoying the fact that it’s very very thin, very light and it has the Yoga hinge that you can flip round into a 360 mode. I think it would be very strange if anybody didn’t expect to see more variations of this product coming out in the next year. And certainly this side of Christmas I think it’s safe to say that we’re going to be launching more developments moving on from our original Yoga Book. PCR February 2017 | 15

CES 2017

CES 2017: r e v o n o i t evolu n o i t u l o v e r CES 2017 saw a whole host of reveals and announcements. PCR sums up some of the key stories that defined the year’s biggest tech show…

I

T ALWAYS SEEMS like CES is too short. After months and months and months of build-up, hype and anticipation, the event came and went in a flash and, in its wake were hundreds of announcements. You can get a closer look at some of the big products that came out of the show on page 41, but there were a few that stole the show which range from ostentatious and outrageous to more subtle. One which was more of the latter in terms of design was Dell’s 32-inch 8K

www.pcr-online.biz

monitor which looks like a normal display on standby, but presents a stunning array of colours and an amazing resolution when turned on. Firmly in the realm of the absurd was Acer’s $8,999 Predator 21 X gaming laptop that weighs in at a whopping 8.8kg. But what were the big themes of this year’s show? Turn the page to get a breakdown of what were, for our money, the biggest trends to come out of the show and where the world of consumer tech is headed for the next few years. PCR February 2017 | 27

CES 2017

THE INVASION OF ALEXA AMAZON DIDN’T have a formal presence at this year’s show, but that didn’t stop Alexa, its virtual personal assistant (VPA), from popping up pretty much everywhere across CES. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll probably be aware of Alexa, the key feature of Amazon’s critically and commercially successful Echo smart speakers. Users can say “Alexa” to wake the device, and then get it to do a wide variety of things ranging from playing music to making purchases from Amazon and interact with a limited array of connected devices. While Amazon had previously kept Alexa in its tightknit bubble of first-party products, CES 2017 saw the VPA pop up all over the show. While a few vendors – namely Omaker, Lenovo and iHome – have made products which take the same form as the Echo, we saw Alexa integrated into some unusual places. LG put Alexa into a refrigerator (which also, of course, has a 29-inch touchscreen) and its smart home robot called Hub (read more about that on page 42); Ford and Volkswagen are chucking Alexa

into their cars; GE has made a circular lamp that looks a bit like a Dyson Airblade which (for some reason) has Alexa built in; and Bluemint Labs has created a successor to its Bixi gesture controller complete with Alexa. Those weren’t the only appearances for Alexa though. The show also saw a bunch of companies reveal ‘complications’ that will see their devices given the ability to be controlled remotely by Alexa. Users will be able to yell at Alexa to get Samsung’s automated vacuum cleaner to hoover around them; Linksys’ Velop router system will support a handful of commands, including one to get Alexa to read your Wi-Fi password aloud; and we’re even seeing a smart lock that can be controlled through Alexa thanks to Array. These join pre-existing complications including the cab hailing app, Uber. That’s a scattering of the ways that Alexa was present through the show but believe us when we say that the VPA was everywhere. The big question now is whether Amazon can keep it all together in a way consumers will continue to respect.

LAPTOPS TAKE CENTRE STAGE WHILE ALEXA might have been the focal point of this year’s show, there were a fair few other devices that made waves, chief among them being outrageous and amazing laptops. There were three outlandish gaming notebooks which caused quite a stir in particular. Firstly is Acer’s Predator 21 X which, as the name suggests, possesses a 21-inch screen with a unique gimmick of being curved.

28 | PCR February 2017

The device has been called “most ridiculous gaming laptop ever conceived” by Cnet, thanks in no small part to its $8,999 price tag, 8.8kg weight and dual Nvidia GeForce 1080 graphics card setup. (More details on page 41). Also shown off was Samsung’s gaming notebook debut – the Odyssey. Slightly (but only slightly) less outrageous than the Predator, Odyssey was discussed more for its aesthetic and design

than its specs. With a multicoloured keyboard and a bizarre parallelogram-shaped mouse pad, Samsung has evidently tried to tap into the gaudy look of high-end PC gaming, but some have argued that the vendor has gone a step too far. Lastly as far as the striking laptops go is Razer’s Project Valerie concept, which boasts the title of being the world’s first

triple-screened notebook. That’s right, the device possesses three 17.3-inch 4K IGZO displays, which effectively creates a 12K widescreen experience. The device’s specs weren’t disclosed, but as this was a concept, it was likely packed to the rafters full of high-end components just because Razer could. These weren’t the only laptops on show, but they were certainly among the most eye catching

ones. We also saw a Dell 2-in-1 that can wirelessly charge through its keyboard; LG’s Gram which claims to have 24 hours of battery (based on 10 year old benchmarking tests, more like 17 hours in 2016 usage terms); and Samsung’s sleek Notebook 9 which, contrary to what Apple tried to tell the world with the latest MacBook Pro, shows that slim and lightweight laptops can be replete with I/O ports.

CES 2017

THE HDR STANDARDS HDR BECAME something of a buzzword in 2016, with Sony plastering it all over the advertisements for its PlayStation 4 Pro, and multiple TV vendors boasting HDR capabilities for their screens, but CES 2017 saw that talk step into overdrive with four different HDR standards being presented. It all became a bit confusing and overwhelming. Okay so let’s try and pick this apart a bit. LG promised that its new TV would comply with all four major HDR standards. These standards are HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG and Advanced HDR. While it might seem a bit daunting for companies and consumers to consider all of these, it’s not quite as difficult as it seems at first sight. HDR10 is a more open standard, developed by device manufacturers (including Samsung and Sony) to avoid having to submit their devices to Dolby’s own standard and fees. It is the default standard for 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray disks and has been utilised by Sony and Microsoft for their respective home consoles. Unfortunately, HDR10’s openness means that it holds screens to a lower standard

than Dolby Vision, mastering content at 1,000 nits of brightness compared to Dolby Vision’s theoretical 10,000-nit limit. The former also supports 10-bit colour to Dolby Vision’s 12-bit, which in means a smaller colour range. As previously mentioned, Dolby Vision holds devices to a higher standard and requires TV sets and media devices that have been specifically designed with a Dolby Vision hardware chip. It has a higher barrier of entry and is therefore more futureproof than HDR10, but it also offers the best HDR experience of any of the four standards since it can calibrate the picture for the specific TV hardware, in addition to the high mastering requirements. HLG – or Hybrid-Log Gamma – is newer and was developed by the BBC and NHK broadcasting networks to serve as an HDR format for live video. It is designed to work similar to regular broadcast television, includes additional information regarding the HDR effect that compatible sets can implement, and is backwards compatible with older standard dynamic

“It all became a bit confusing and overwhelming.”

range images should the set not offer HLG compatibility. Advanced HDR is the least established of the four formats, and has the least amount of information about it available online. Basically, this is primarily built for broadcast media and

upscaling SDR video to HDR. With plenty of high-quality TVs, Blu-Ray players and media streaming devices coming out of CES, it will definitely be worth your while to bear all of this HDR info in mind when examining the latest devices.

HIGH-TECH AUTOMOBILES THIS ONE might not be very much in the world of PCR, but we’d be remiss not to mention automated vehicles which were very much a central part of CES in 2017. We don’t have the space to talk about all the offerings from the likes of Hyundai, Audi, Honda and Nissan but what was made clear is that the world of selfdriving cars isn’t limited to the Teslas of the world anymore and is definitely being adopted by the mainstream. Tech and automobiles have become increasingly intertwined, and this looks like a trend that will continue and grow as the year goes on. Expect to see an even bigger showing in Berlin at IFA this September.

NDEPENDENT CAN often be quite a broad term, but in the IT world there is definitely a category of specialised, independent retailers

that celebrate their differences from major High Street stores. Now when it comes to the purposes of this guide, we have

INTERVIEW

The balance of buying DISTREE Events’ Executive Director Christophe Painvin talks to Sophia Murray about the consumer tech channel and which products are proving to be the most successful for retailers throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa…

D

ISTREE EMEA is in its 15th year, how has the event evolved? The principle of the event has always been to gather consumer tech brands to meet with distributors from across the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. By offering an innovative and efficient format based on prescheduled one-on-one meetings between brands and channel partners, DISTREE EMEA enables brands to launch, build or develop their distribution networks and routes-to-market. During the last 15 years, we have constantly improved and refined our knowledge of consumer tech distribution channels in EMEA. This enables us to invite the senior executives and buyers from distributors that are most relevant to our exhibitors. It is an event format where everyone benefits, and it allows us to deliver maximum business benefits to everyone in attendance. We now put a great deal of effort into identifying startups and emerging brands that are ready to build distribution channels in EMEA. We make it simple for them to identify the distributors that are right for them and meet them in one place at one time – that’s a huge advantage and cost saving for them. For the distributors, it is a chance for them to see the latest innovations in consumer tech and identify new brands they wish to add to their portfolio. The event this year will introduce new zones in ICT, gaming, mobile and smart tech. Why these zones? We have created these zones to reflect structural changes occurring in the EMEA distribution landscape. We are seeing an increasing number of consumer tech distributors 36 | PCR February 2017

start to specialise and actively position themselves as country or regional experts in one or more of those four distinct categories. DISTREE EMEA is committed to covering the full range of consumer technology products sold through volume channels. Much of the product innovation that is currently happening is centred around gaming, mobile and smart technology, this is where we are seeing an influx of new brands looking to start building channel reach throughout EMEA. A recent DISTREE survey shows there is a strong interest in gaming products and accessories – why do you think this is the case? The market for gaming products and accessories is growing rapidly and is also a category that has the potential to offer strong margins for distributors. Many gamers have high levels of disposable income and are prepared to pay for premium products. This translates into margin potential for both distributors and retailers. When you consider the excitement that is building around virtual reality (VR), it is no surprise that distributors are looking closely at gaming in 2017. Accessories remains one of the most vibrant and innovative categories. There is huge choice and there are hundreds of brands vying for position. Many accessories have now morphed from functional products to fashion products - and again that can be a boost for margins. The challenge for distributors is to identify accessory brands with real potential, secure the distribution rights and position the brands correctly in their markets.

How is the consumer market across EMEA channels driving demand for ICT products? Technology is becoming more widespread in our everyday lives and we’re now talking about personal devices such as smartphones that many consumers view as essential. With the emergence of smart technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) we’re seeing thousands of new use case scenarios for technology – in many cases for devices that didn’t exist just a few years ago.

“There has always been a delicate balance of power in the consumer channel between the vendor and the distributor.” Christophe Painvin, DISTREE However, it is important to understand that even as demand for ICT and consumer technology products grows, the price points will continue to fall – that’s the nature of the industry. Product lifecycles are shortening and that means that building effective channels quickly and efficiently for new products is more important than ever.

power in the consumer tech channel between the vendor and the distributor. If you’re a vendor with a hugely popular product that has massive consumer demand and offers a decent channel margin, you’re going to be inundated with distributors wanting to work with you. If you’re a major distributor with huge channel reach, you will have many brands wanting to tap into that and may hold the upper hand. This is why the consumer tech channel is so exciting right now. A company that is a consumer tech start-up today could have the next ‘must have’ product and become a unicorn in a few years’ time. The trick for distributors is spotting these companies early, picking up the channel rights and realising their potential. That’s something that emerging distributors can be particularly good at because they are agile and can make decisions quickly.

Another issue to consider is the rise of crowdfunding and global e-tailers, meaning that consumers can access and purchase new products very early on – even before a distributor has been appointed in their market. The rules are changing in the consumer tech channel. The traditional vendordistributor-retailer-consumer channel is constantly being reworked and re-engineered. Everyone needs to adapt and find their perfect role in this very exciting and rapidly evolving environment.

Are buyers in the channel in a stronger position than they were five years ago? There has always been a delicate balance of www.pcr-online.biz

RESELLER PROFILE

RESELLER PROFILE: INSIGHT Emma de Sousa, vice president and managing Director at Insight UK & Ireland talks to Sophia Murray about delivering solutions and services to its customers… How did Insight get started? Like many great technology companies, Insight was actually started in a garage. It began as Hard Drives International in 1988, founded by Tim and Eric Crown, using the advance from a credit card. Since then it has grown into a global organisation. in 1995 it IPO’d and today it is a Fortune 500 company with more than 5,400 teammates across the globe. What can you tell us about the ways in which education institutions use Insight’s services? The rate at which technology evolves has made it difficult for many educational institutions to keep pace, which is why many are looking to third party experts for their help and support. From advice on the best tools to improving the learning experience for pupils, through to educating staff and pupils on device safety, the role of tech experts in the educational sector is wide and varied. In today’s digital-first world, where pupils are ‘digital natives’, we are seeing the demand for technological change increase dramatically. Students want access to the same digital tools they have in their personal lives – for the education sector this has meant looking to how they can harness the power of digital to create immersive classrooms, where interactive devices and teaching methods are the norm.

By working with leading technology partners, we are able to create bespoke packages for each of our clients, ensuring they not only have the best of breed technology, but a solution that has been created to fulfil their needs. Insight is very well placed in this field to support the education sector with the frameworks we have in place. Are there any common elements of services that all of your customers need? The recent explosion of data is an ongoing and difficult challenge for companies of all shapes and sizes. in turn, we find this is what an increasing amount of clients look to us to support with. Clients – including those in education - need to invest in developing the right expertise internally, as well as working with the best partners to help them interpret the data available. As organisations do this, the adoption of cloud solutions increases and we’re beginning to see a huge growth in this area. With this deployment will come another challenge for organisations as they unlock hidden layers, such as licensing, which need to be considered to ensure they are compliant. Cloud delivery in general provides a higher level of agility and speed to service deployment, however it must be considered carefully as commercially this may not always be the best option when considered over time.

“Like many great technology companies, Insight was actually started in a garage.” Emma de Sousa, Insight UK & Ireland

Tell about Insight’s data storage solutions One of the most important capabilities we offer at Insight is our ability to bring leading providers together to offer an effective end-toend solution. This is particularly true in our data storage division. We have very strong solutions around data storage, back up and disaster recovery that are based on a range of leading technologies. As a HPE Platinum Partner, and one of only a handful of DellEMC Titanium Black partners, Insight demonstrates a higher level of capability to deliver high quality solutions to our clients. Insight’s expertise in these solutions ensures we are able to help our clients achieve a number of

business outcomes through the correct use of data storage solutions. We also offer a variety of services that deliver a multitude of benefits to organisations that are looking to address challenges around data sprawling. These benefits include increased productivity, reduced downtime, improved cost control and increased data protection. Our understanding and expertise allows us to deploy storage solutions that are tailored to each organisation’s specific requirements and business goals, while holding a deep understanding of the technical nuisances required to plan, build and manage these platforms in line with the initial expectations set.

RETAILER OF THE MONTH

FACT FILE Year established: 2002 Members of staff: 14 Address: Dephna House, 24-26 Arcadia Avenue, London N3 2JU

COMPUTER DOCTOR Sophia Murray talks to Computer Doctor managing director Joseph Nathdi about custombuilt data recovery stations, the dangers of ransomware and the popularity of gaming PCs… How did Computer Doctor get started? I just qualified as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) in 2002, got a £1000 loan from a friend and started trading as Computer Doctor in Barnet. At the time, the internet was in its early days and Google had only been about for four years at the time, but I decided to register a domain, create a website and started trading as a computer specialist. In a short period of time, the website was indexed by Google and as a result of that online exposure, service and solution inquiries started to come in. A year later, Computer Doctor – which started life as a oneman show – had become a company of five highly motivated and highly skilled businesses that had several SMB IT service contracts built around supporting and maintaining computer networks of various sizes. From the very start, we knew that the main ingredient of success in the business of information 38 | PCR February 2017

technology was providing solutions coupled with high quality IT support, and not just resolving computer problems after they have happened. A pro-active approach in IT helped us continue maintaining quite a few small business networks and learn from our experience and growth at the same time. What can you tell us about your laptop repair and system building services? We primarily provide services, but do have a fully equipped workshop for computer hardware repairs. The most requests we get are about data recovery, and as a result of overwhelming demand from our clients - we invested in a data recovery lab with 16 custom-built data recovery stations. This has enabled us to conduct data recovery from faulty hard drives, RAID arrays, servers and laptop computers. We have had a specialist data recovery team since 2009 with its own dedicated website (www. datarecovery.london) which

has been very successful. Another popular service we provide is gaming laptop and PC repair and upgrade services. We have built ourselves a very good reputation in service and repair. We also upgrade four to five gaming computers each week.

“We have seen people going to outrageous extremes in building their dream gaming powerhouse” Joseph Nathdi, Computer Doctor

Why do you think gaming laptops have become so popular? The trend for gaming laptops has increased, but hardcore gamers do seem to prefer custom-built gaming PCs because it gives them full control in customising and upgrading at relatively lower costs when compared with pre-built systems. We have serviced and optimised gaming PCs starting from £2,500 to £25,000 with massive cooling units that require a van to collect them from clients, and returning them with a lot of care. For those gamers where money is less of a consideration, we have seen people going to outrageous extremes in building their dream gaming powerhouse with 4 x 12 core CPUs, 4 SLR expensive GPUs and 4x1TB RAID0 solid state hard drives that are cooled by massive water-cooling systems with all the cool flashing lights that are powered by a 2000W Platinum PSU.

Telephone: 0207 516 1077 Email: info@computerdoctor.co.uk Websites: www.computerdoctor.co.uk, www.datarecovery.london

Customers are becoming more concerned about security and falling victim to hackers. Data or server recovery must also be another popular request for you. In fact, one of the most important and frequent requests from our existing and prospective clients are about email security and what measures need to be taken to initiate or enhance security in wired, wireless networks and the computers connected to them. Ramsonware has become a particularly thorny issue. We have received quite a few inquiries from clients whose computers have been infected with ramsomware and who have had their data encrypted behind a paywall. Most of these infections come through unsolicited emails, or deceptively familiar recipients whose own mailboxes have been compromised. Email security is a major concern nowadays and we offer solutions to address the issues that our customers have with them. www.pcr-online.biz

The Predator 21 X features the world’s first curved screen on a notebook

The Predator’s mechanical keyboard uses Cherry MX Brown switches and has built-in RGB backlighting

The inside of the Predator features dual Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics cards and 64GB of RAM

New gaming laptop ain’t got time to bleed CES IS NEVER short of a few outrageous products, and none sum that up more than Acer’s Predator 21 X gaming notebook. Just how mad is this thing? Well, let’s start with the price: $8,999. UK pricing hasn’t been announced, but with our poor rate of exchange that roughly converts to about £8,250. Now that we’ve got the elephant out of the room, let’s talk turkey. And by turkey I mean specs. The Predator’s big selling feature is its display: a 21-inch

curved 4K screen, a first for a laptop. Luckily though what you’re seeing on the screen when gaming will be of a great quality thanks to not one, but two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards. Also on the inside is Intel’s new 7th-generation Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7820HK processor, in addition to 64GB of DDR4-2400 system memory, and up to four 512GB SSDs in RAID 0. The Predator 21 X is powerful. So powerful that it requires two power supplies to keep the thing going.

“Will it replace your favourite gaming desktop? Probably not. Does it show what a gaming laptop is capable of? Absolutely.”

Safe to say then that the Predator can take whatever is thrown at it, but what about its looks? Well, it’s a gaming laptop. Which is to say that it is big, brash, angular and full of multi-coloured LED lights. Keeping on the theme of lights, sat above the keyboard is a glowing triangular window that looks more like it belongs on Iron Man than it does on a Laptop. That window gives users a peek into the insides at one of the machine’s three cooling fans.

The mechanical keyboard that uses Cherry MX Brown switches has RGB backlighting built in, and it feels as satisfying to use as any solid gaming keyboard on the market. One last gimmick that the Predator has up its sleeves is its removable side-panel that instantly converts from a number pad to a track pad. Will it replace your favourite gaming desktop? Probably not. But does it show the potential of what a gaming laptop is capable of? Absolutely.

The robots are taking over AMAZON’S ALEXA virtual personal assistant (VPA) was all over CES like a rash and nowhere was that more evident than in the LG Hub robot. The Hub isn’t a robot in the conventional sense of the word, mainly because it is stationary and solely controlled by your voice, but what it provides that is lacking in other Alexaequipped products is a whole load of personality. You wouldn’t think it, but simply adding a screen and a face to it makes the device feel much more lifelike. That, and its somewhat unnerving ability to swivel around on the spot and look at whoever is talking to it. Visually it looks pretty similar to the Jibo robot that was unveiled back in 2015. But there’s more to the Hub than just swivelling around on the spot, playing

music and looking up the weather; as you’d expect from something called a Hub, it also acts as a command and control unit for a variety of different LG appliances. Demonstrating it on stage, LG

showed off the Hub preheating a connected oven turning on a robotic vacuum and controlling an autonomous lawnmower. The Hub comes in two versions – a larger bot which

would be your primary point of interaction, and a miniature sized hub that, like the Amazon Dot, can be placed in different rooms around the house to enable voice control from anywhere.

The Hub bot is consumer facing, but LG showed off a larger version that it hopes will be deployed in airports and hotels. Unlike it’s housebound siblings, this Hub can move around.

A bit more than bling CES WOULDN’T be complete without something truly outrageous, and while many will point to various flashy laptops or TVs, Onkyo stole the show in terms of ostentation with its Diamond Headphones which do what they say on the tin. No, literally. These are headphones that are covered with diamonds. And these are real diamonds, not Swarovski crystal or glass. Each pair is built by hand with the specific buyer in mind, ranging from $80,000 to $200,000 depending on customisation

choices (including, of course, the size of the individual diamonds used). Each pair contains 20 karats of diamonds, which are rated between G-H on GIA’s colour scale (nearly colourless) and between VVS-VS for clarity. Even the red ring that marks the right ear is made with rubies. Onkyo wouldn’t disclose information like driver size, sound tuning, or impedance levels because, as one representative put it, “the specs don’t matter”. Talk about making a statement.

Luckily though, while the bass is very prevalent it doesn’t interfere with the M5’s presentation of mids and high notes. If you want to

customise the balance, B&O offers a smartphone app which lets you tune the speaker’s sound. The app even gives you positioning presets: whether it’s free-standing, in the corner, or up against a wall. In terms of aesthetic, the M5 is minimal and sleek, which is exactly what we’ve come to expect from Bang & Olufsen. While the whole thing might be on the pricier side, you can definitely see that the Beoplay M5 is a premium device in every sense of the word.

Cherry makes noise with silent keyboard Improving the best-in-clas WHAT’S THE biggest problem with keyboards? Simple. Noise. In a busy office space, the clattering of people on their computers can sound like a hailstorm. Luckily, renowned keyboard maker Cherry has a solution with the new MX Board Silent. The MX Board Silent is, in effect, an updated version of the classic G803000. It uses MX Red Silent and MX Black Silent switches that the company claims will offer the same

satisfying tactile resistance (45 cN of force for the Red, 60 cN for the Black) as its other boards, but with a dramatic reduction in noise. Cherry quietly released these silent keys in 2016, but they were limited to a timed exclusivity deal with gaming keyboard and mouse maker Corsair. However, that deal expired at the end of the year, and now Cherry can shout to the rooftops about its own silent keys.

THE XPS 13 has been one of the most celebrated laptops for the past couple of years, and now Dell is taking it to a new level by turning it into a convertible. Like the regular XPS 13, Dell’s 2-in-1 version uses an InfinityEdge display with just a 5.2mm border. The company claims this makes its 2-in-1 the smallest 13-inch model in the world, as everything is squeezed into an 11-inch form factor. The biggest change is in – of all places – the hinge which gives the XPS 13 the ability to rotate its display into four modes, like Lenovo’s Yoga

Book. Basically, it is a smaller and lighter XPS 13 that also converts into a tablet. Dell is using Intel’s latest mobile Kaby Lake Core i5 and Core i7 processors on this new 2-in-1, which means slightly decreased performance but the benefit of having no fan. The biggest standout feature is the oddly placed webcam at the bottom of the screen, but that is all in effort of making the device as compact as possible. If it’s anything like the XPS 13 laptop, this 2-in-1 could be what we’ve all been waiting for.

Samsung and Google are making Chromebooks sexy again WE HAD known about development for months, but after countless leaks Samsung has officially launched its new Chromebooks – the Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro. These are the first Chromebooks built from the ground up with support for Android apps and the first to come with a stylus, and they have the iPad Pro and Surface Pro in their sights. Google and Samsung have collaborated on the new device which features a Google and Samsung collaborated on the new device, which features a 12.3inch, 2400 x 1600 pixel LED display; 4GB of RAM; two USB Type-C ports, which support charging and 4K video output; a MicroSD card slot; and 32GB of internal storage all packed

in its just-over 0.5-inch allmetal chassis. The only difference between the two models is the processor – the Plus runs on an ARM-based chip while the Pro uses an Intel Core M3.

“These Chromebooks have the iPad Pro and Surface Pro in their sights.” Chromebooks have seemed a bit dated in comparison to the sleek and powerful iPads and Surfaces of this world, but Samsung and Google will hope that these new models can set the market alight.

Smart glasses for smart people

LENOVO HAS taken one big step into the emerging market of augmented reality with the launch of its New Glass C200 smart glasses. Powered by Linux, the C200 have been designed for business and enterprise purposes with the company claiming that they have enhanced artificial intelligence and augmented reality-based features. They also come with a nifty LTE connection which means that users aren’t bound to Wi-Fi spots. C200 comes after Microsoft’s big push of its Windows Holographic

platform, and Lenovo’s headset takes full advantage of that as its base. In terms of design, the C200s come in at a tidy 60g and are visibly smaller than products like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, sharing more in common with the aesthetics of Sony’s sci-fi-looking PlayStation VR. The headset shown off at a preCES event is a prototype and not much is known about the way it works. Lenovo says that C200 uses six degrees-of-freedom tracking which means that no extra camera is required.

Virtually wireless

ONE OF THE biggest complaints that people have had of the HTC Vive VR headset is that a whole bunch of cables are dangling down behind you and are a definite trip hazard. This is an issue that the company is all-too aware of which is why it has created the TPCast which brings wireless functionality to the headset. A little box that sits atop the user’s head (don’t try and pretend that this ruins the aesthetic of the Vive, it already looks stupid enough) transmits all the data to the PC and – remarkably – the thing works. This is especially surprising considering that wireless

monitors aren’t a practical option, yet here we are with HTC creating a solid wireless function for its top-of-the-line VR headset which presents next to no lag that simply works. There are a few issues though. The 6,000mAh battery only lasts for two hours and the battery is attached via a cable that sits in the user’s pocket. On top of that is the price of $249 which is a bit steep to go on top of the Vive’s already lofty price tag. Regardless, while we’re waiting for a truly wireless Vive headset, this is definitely the best option available for avid VR fans.

Hearing is believing Ultra-ultra HD

GAME ACCESSORY maker Hyper X has launched what it calls “the most advanced HyperX headset to date”, with the claim of being the world’s first gaming headset with Plug-andPlay Dolby Surround Sound: the Cloud Revolver S. Now it should be said that this isn’t entirely built into the headset, but the Dolby Technology is packed into a new USB dongle that delivers highend audio at the touch of a button. The headphones which come with a wider headband and HyperX’s

Signature Memory Foam, also feature three pre-set equaliser settings, independent volume and microphone mute buttons, and backlit LED to quickly check active modes. Another positive is that the rather dramatically named Revolver doesn’t require the installation of any software that could potentially slow a PC down. As a result, the new headphones can be used with Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, if you are that way inclined, thanks to a 1m-long 1.3mm headphone jack.

CES IS nothing if it is not a look at the shiny things of tomorrow, and while there may be self-driving cars and robots around the place, there are few things as exciting as Dell’s monstrous 8K desktop monitor. Yes, you read that right. To make you salivate a bit more, let us give you a bit more detail. This particular monitor packs in 1.07 billion colours and a resolution of 7680 x 4320 in a 32-inch screen. As a result, the UP3218K (a title that rolls

straight off the tongue) has as many pixels as four 4K displays or 16 Full HD panels. While its wallet-draining $4,999 price tag puts it well out of the realm of an average consumer, it could potentially become an essential purchase for graphics, design, and photo professionals. The only thing more frightening than the cost of the display is considering how many graphics cards we’ll need to run the thing.

OUT OF OFFICE

IN THE

HOT SEAT Ed Baily

GET WELL SOON JOANNE! ANYTHING CAN happen when you’re on holiday. You can explore a new place, try exciting food, fall in love with someone you can’t understand a word of and, in the unfortunate case of Synology UK’s marketing manager Joanne Plummer, crack your head open. Stopping off in Dubai for a

few hours after a trip to Australia, Joanne went for a swim and slipped over, cracking her head in the process. As a result, she ended up coming back from her holiday three weeks later than planned and with seven stitches in the back of her head to boot. Joanne however is in good

spirits and said that it’s not all bad: “I got to ride in an ambulance though with flashing lights and sirens. That’s one ticked off the bucket list!” I hope you will join us in wishing Joanne the best and sending her positive messages for a full and speedy recovery.

Hyper X’s EMEA business manager Ed Baily takes to the hot seat and talks about roadtrips, sports and aviation ambitions… What was your first job? When I was 13 years old I would spend my Saturday mornings grafting at a local timber yard. What’s your favourite TV show? I love Game of Thrones, but whilst waiting for the next season I have been hooked on Sky’s WestWorld. Anthony Hopkins is superb in it! Do you have any hobbies? I’m quite sporty so play football, golf and enjoy a good run down beside the river Thames. I also try to be cultural, so visit some of London’s great exhibitions at the Tate Britain and Victoria and Albert museum in my spare time. Last but not least I enjoy a cheeky gaming session either on my PC playing Overwatch or my PS4 playing some Battlefield or FIFA online!

KINGSFIELD COMPUTER PRODUCTS CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY BY DONATING A LOAD OF DOSH TO CHARITY

If you could go back in time what would you do? I would be an airline pilot, as a kid I always had visions of flying around the world. What is your biggest pet peeve? Chelsea tractors...so unnecessary in London. Tell us something that not many people know... I learnt to fence at university. I can fence all three weapons. What’s the funniest or most memorable experience you’ve had in your career? Cruising down Pacific Coast Highway in John Tu’s Porsche 918 Spyder. What’s going to be the next big thing in tech? Two areas: first, we are going to see a lot more smart home products. Both Apple and Microsoft have been rumoured to be developing very clever smart speakers to the market this year. Personally I would like to see an all in one ‘Tony Stark’ (Iron Man) style voice controlled device which can open your curtains (Amazon is close with Alexa)! Secondly, after Pokemon Go’s phenomenal success we are going to see many more augmented reality games and apps coming to market in 2017. Tell us your favourite cheesy joke? What cheese is not yours? Nacho cheese!

MOST COMPANIES might be content with celebrating a milestone with a pat on the back, but some, like Northampton-based reseller Kingsfield Computer Products, decide to use that added bit of exposure to give back. Kingsfield Computer Products, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, has announced that it will pledge a per cent of its end of year net profit to two charities: Macmillan and The

Christie Charitable Fund. Speaking of the later organisation, director Nitesh said: “The reason we are supporting The Christie is they have been our customers since 2012 and we felt only right to give back to them for all of their support.” Both Macmillan and The Christie are charities focused on cancer care. Macmillan is one of the country’s largest charities and provides support for patients going

through cancer treatment while The Christie provides services that go above and beyond standard NHS care, including the development of the UK’s first NHS high energy proton beam therapy service for cancer patients. Kingsfield Computer Products has kicked off the year by donating £250 to each, and hopefully the company will see a successful financial year so that these very deserving charities can benefit.

UK VENDOR HAS EGG-XCITING CES THERE WERE loads of awards dished out at CES 2017 (probably as many as there were products), but we wanted to give a particular shout out to UK tech brand Veho which walked away with a prestigious Golden Egg award. Proudly British, Veho is headquarters in Southampton and has been partnered with US retailer Newegg for the past year. The multi-billion dollar online retailer hosted its 13th annual ‘Eggies’ awards ceremony at the famous Caesers Palace hotel in Las Vegas, and Veho was lucky enough to collect the gong for ‘2016 Best Global Seller”. Collecting the award and expressing his excitement, Veho commercial director Ben Vallance said: “We launched our partnership with New Egg in 2016 and have had amazing support. We are excited for the opportunities that our partnership brings for 2017.” Congratulations to all at Veho and well done to all of you who were out at CES whether as exhibitors or delegates.

THE CHANNEL GETS FESTIVE WE MIGHT be a couple of months removed from all of the Christmas celebrations, but we thought that now would be the perfect time to take a look at what you lot got up to with your office parties. We had a lot of submissions, but as space is limited we’ll just print a few of our favourites from Utopia Computers, Mad Catz and ESL. If you’ve got any fun inter-company events coming up let us know and you could see yourself in the next issue of PCR. Email jeaston@ nbmedia.com.

In our Team of the Month section, we highlight some of the important faces from across the industry who perhaps aren’t always in the public eye. This month, we speak to Ebuyer…

Who’s in your team? Matt Cornall – Server Stuart Bell – Software Guy Drury – Network and Storage Nathanial Alabaster – A/V Solutions

working in your team? There’s so many to choose from, but I recall spending half an hour explaining to an irate customer why his “wireless router” did, in fact, have wires.

What have been your biggest successes of the past 12 months? Continuing to grow our enterprise offering and raising brand awareness in tandem with some large successes involving network and server deployments for a wellknown kitchen manufacture and installation company and an international supermarket chain.

What’s the best part of working in your team? Being in a techie environment, a collection of geeks, if we didn’t congregate for work I’m not sure any of us would ever actually see sunlight.

What’s the funniest or most memorable experience of

B

What’s the hardest part of working in the tech industry? Keeping up to date with the latest technologies both current and forthcoming, the dollar rate post-

Brexit has also made things more expensive than they should be. What is the team working on at the moment? We are currently working on multiple large-scale deployments involving network and server solutions for a well-known retail chain due to open a further 26 stores this year, and another involving an video advertising campaign for a prominent UKbased E-Liquid manufacturing company. What are your thoughts on the current state of the UK tech retail space right now? We’re in a unique spot currently

where Brexit has made IT equipment more expensive and at the same time hybrid solutions uptake is growing in the SMB market, so we’re having more dialogue with our customers to ensure that they get the right solution for them, as opposed to simply buying them and working out how to integrate it into their system later, as getting things wrong right now is very costly! That’s a good thing for us, we’re readily available and happy to help – most companies try to focus on price or service, we try not to compromise. Who makes the best cuppa? The coffee machine
