Great Setting for Your Simcha Planning a wedding, bar/bat-mitzvah, brit milah, or other event? The first thing many people have to decide is whether to do it outdoors or indoors. An outdoor banquet garden may offer your guests a beautiful view as they mill around under a clear night sky with the smell of flowers wafting through the air. A well-designed and expansive banquet garden can offer guests the opportunity to dance and chat outside in the open air and to enjoy the feeling of nature. The downside is that, depending on the time of year, your guests may have to share this wonderful atmosphere with mosquitoes, fickle weather, or the smells of a nearby dairy farm. On the other hand, a banquet hall offers climate control as well as pest control. And if you want something small and intimate for your simcha, a
banquet hall can be sub-divided to accommodate any party. The downside is that the ambiance depends solely on your creativity and the noise level can sometimes seem excessive. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS There are venues with both an outdoor garden and indoor hall, allowing you to use a combination according to your needs. If you are hosting a wedding, your guests could eat inside and walk outside among the trees, grass, and outdoor décor, often accompanied by beautiful views. Your chuppah will be picture-perfect under the stars and you’ll be able to dance the night away in the air-conditioned inner hall. Many combination halls have different setup options depending on the size and nature of the event, the season and the weather.
At Kedma MIDTOWN you’ll find a magnificent banquet hall and banquet garden- right in the heart of Jerusalem. Kedma MIDTOWN, a new venue by Kedma Neve Ilan, celebrates more than just weddings. Our banquet hall is modular and can accommodate from 200 to 800 guests, helping you create the proper ambiance whether it’s a large wedding, small intimate family gathering or formal corporate event.
Come enjoy the best that Jerusalem has to offer with a menu of fine food, beautiful ambiance
and a lifetime of memories.
Kedma MIDTOWN is centrally located; close to the Begin Highway, the Old City, and the southern entrance to the city; and is easily accessible by public transportation.

DIAMOND AND DIAMOND JEWELRY MANUFACTURERS We are located in the Diamond Exchange and make it possible for the consumer to purchase directly from us without extra brokers’ fees. We believe that an engagement ring or any other piece of diamond jewelry should be available at affordable prices, and the purchasing experience should give the customer a sense of security and calm. At Diamond House Israel, you examine and choose your own diamond, receive a full description of the stone you chose and get an unbeatable price. We offer you genuine, natural, conflict-free diamonds.
INTERESTING DIAMOND FACTS The round cut is by far the most popular diamond shape. This is the shape that best displays the diamond’s brilliance. This round ranks highest in sparkle and creates that WOW effect. The word diamond is derived from the Greek word adamas which means something extremely strong or impenetrable. People believe that diamonds are indestructible. Although diamonds are extremely strong, they are actually quite fragile. Pounding with a hammer is definitely not recommended! The Kimberley Process guarantees that the source of your diamond will not be an area where there is civil war or various conflicts. Less than 1% of diamonds sold have been connected to these areas. After being subject to ultra violet lighting, a genuine diamond will glow in the dark for several seconds. Some people use this to determine a diamond’s authenticity.

THE THIRD
Industrial Revolution IS UPON US! Interview with Benzion Cheirif, the 3D Printing Expert Ever put on those 3D glasses at the movie theater that change the way you see things? Well, now, thanks to 3D printing, you can change the way you see, feel, and create things as well. So, prepare to be amazed. Welcome to the 3rd Industrial Revolution — 3D printing!
How did you get into this exciting industry? I was always a techy, so when I found out about 3D printing I was blown away. My first design was a tefillin box in the shape of the Beit Hamikdash. People found it fascinating and wanted to know where I found such a unique item. After that, I bought my first 3D printer and I haven’t stopped printing since. Today I have five different printers and when they are all running it is quite a sight.
What is 3D printing? This is the most common question people ask me. 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process by which 3-dimensional objects are formed. The reason it is called an “additive process” is because material is being put together in a precise manner in order to create the final object, as opposed to destructive manufacturing whereby an object is created by eliminating or machining material from a block of wood or metal. With 3D printing objects are produced using digital model data from a 3d model designed on a computer. This model makes it possible to create objects in almost any shape - from gadgets to clothing, from jewelry to cars, from airplane parts to body parts. Many experts consider 3D
printing to be the beginning of the third industrial revolution.
What items or services do you offer via 3D printing? If I have an idea, a concept, or a design like a children’s toy or a woman’s necklace, can I just go to you to create it for me? Anything you can think of can be made, within the limits of the material and technology available. I offer a complete 3D printing service. That means I’ll help you with the concept and design of your item. To this end, I offer 3D scanning using photogrammetry, as well as 3D printing and post processing. You’ll be able to see how your idea looks and receive an actual working model. Many of my business clients have ideas for products they want to produce in the Far East. I save them valuable time and money by doing the prototyping locally, and when they’re happy with what I’ve created, they ship the final prototype out to get mass produced. I also produce custom jewelry and Judaica that can be cast in gold and silver. I can use a doctor’s DICOM file to print models of organs for complicated surgeries. Students send me their design files to be printed for their final project. Parents send me files that their kids found online for me to print them. The list goes on and on.
How complex of an item can you print? The beauty of 3D printing is that complexity is, generally, not an issue. In fact, it’s a benefit of 3D printing. Many designs
3D Printing Technology
can only be manufactured economically using 3D printing. That’s not to say there aren’t limits to 3D printers, at least at this point in time. But these limits rarely affect the average individual or company that requires our services.
I specifically deal with include, but are not limited to, hard plastics, rubber-like goods, professional engineering resins, as well as resins that can be sent to a casting house to be melted and turned into silver or gold.
Design limitations vary amongst the different 3D printing processes, but in general limits are more specific to feature size. For instance, if you wanted writing on your 3D printed part, the actual thickness of the letters would need to be at least 300 microns or about a third of a millimeter.
Is the finished product as durable as a product bought in the store?
Does a customer have to have a basic blueprint before coming to you? Not at all. The creative process is one of the joys of 3D printing. Many times I have clients coming to me with a general concept or idea and we work together to create the final product. Clients enjoy seeing their ideas come to life and I am forever amazed at how really creative my clients can become.
What if a customer isn’t happy with the end result? I’m in a customer satisfaction business. My goal is for the customer to be happy. If my customer is not satisfied with the way their design turned out, I will work with them to make sure it’s exactly what they were expecting. Often, when designing a product to be sent to the Far East for production, we have to go through several revisions in order to get it just right. The goal is that with each step in the process, my client is one step closer to making his dream a reality.
What are the most popular usages of 3D printing? 3D printing benefits nearly every industry. In fact, I have yet to find an industry for which 3D printing doesn’t provide cost and time effective savings. But it’s not only helpful for the industry, it’s also a revolution for consumer customizable manufacturing. Today, you can individualize almost everything, from a keychain to a prosthetic arm for an amputee. The possibilities are endless.
If plastic is the primary material used by 3D printers, how can there be such a range of available items? 3D printing today is not limited to plastics but operates with a variety of other materials like metal, resins, food, and even stem cells that can be used to create organs. The materials
Another great advantage to 3D printing is that I can select materials that match and often exceed the durability of the same store-bought product. However, usually 3D printing is used to improve or customize a current product, or manufacture a replacement part that would otherwise be locally unavailable, like parts for a foreign refrigerator or washer/dryer. I myself have repaired many things around the house with a 3D printed part that would have otherwise required me to replace an entire appliance or system.
What about the software? Can it be used by a layman or do you need to have an understanding of the 3D field? Obviously you need to have some knowledge of the 3D printing field to be successful. If you’re looking to design something yourself, I suggest starting with any of a number of free programs like Tinkercad.com or Thingiverse.com. These types of sites will show you numerous designs made by others and you’ll be inspired by the hundreds of thousands of 3D printable files you can choose from.
Do you think 3D printers will become a standard item in homes and offices within the next 10 years? I think the same question was asked when the first sewing machines came out. Technically, people could make and fix their own clothes but we don’t all own a sewing machine. While 3D printing technology is steadily progressing, I doubt it will be as commonplace as the computer. Nevertheless, I can see a time, very soon, when every neighborhood will have their local 3D printing service creating everything from personalized phone cases to 5-speed bicycles, and beyond.
The
Belle of the Hall
Interview with Meni Saado, Manager of La Belle Hall, Jerusalem How long have you been part of the city’s Simcha scene? We’ve been in the events business for twenty years and this hall was previously run as an event venue under the name HaYahalom ShebaKeter. Seven years ago, we rebranded and repositioned the hall as a leading contender in the contemporary, upmarket category of event halls. In addition, we also offer delivery of catering to venues off site. How is this hall different to all other halls? Space, technology and flexibility. The venue itself is spacious and adaptable to the size and nature of the event. We can seat up to 900 guests in total, or split the halls into two separate rooms to seat respectively 750 and 280 guests. Our state-of-the-art technology offers endless possibilities. Built-in sound infrastructure enables quick set-up for your band, and replaceable panels in the ceiling can be changed to compliment the lighting and set the tone of the room. Curtains and other elements can also be matched to a color theme. This enables clients to personalize their event without extra cost. When planning a wedding, clients often book both halls, using the smaller hall for the reception and chuppah and the larger banquet hall for dinner and dancing. We also have an outdoor chuppah space for clients who prefer an open-sky ceremony. Sounds like a great package. What’s on the inside? 12

DECEMBER 2016
What truly sets us apart is our dedication to superb service standards and our attention to the small details that objectively might not mean anything to us but mean everything to a client, a choson and kallah or their guests. Our service philosophy begins with the way we treat our staff, focuses on the quality of our catering and ability to customize events to suit each client, and above all, rests on our ability to enable our clients to sit back, relax and enjoy their event. What’s makes your staff superb? Most of our staff have been with us since the venue’s inception and are one of our most valuable resources. We continually emphasize that their role as waiter, chef or logistics is integral to the success of an event. We believe that if our staff feels belonging and appreciation, they’ll always be motivated and willing to work hard and give their all to the job. Is every event really unique? We view each client as different and individual. So we custom-tailor every aspect of their event to their specific requests and requirements, in terms of the number of guests, nature of the event, clients’ preferences and other small details. We like to know the exact number of guests and the general demographics so that we can configure the hall accordingly. A younger crowd will spend more time on the dance floor while an older crowd will spend more time seated. A kallah doesn’t want to

feel that no one showed up at her wedding nor does she want people constantly treading on her gown, so for a smaller wedding we move things around as needed in order to create the effect of a smaller dance floor and for a bigger wedding we ensure ample space on and around the dance floor.
clients with technical questions during the event, and instead directs questions to the client representative who can either make a decision themselves or speak to the client when necessary.
Conversely, is there one thing that all events share?
Most of our clientele are from the religious or ultraOrthodox sector and most of our events are weddings. In fact, we have weddings booked for almost every relevant day of the calendar.
While each event is unique there are two common threads that run through each event and determine that final thumbs-up or thumbs-down. I think all events are measured by two main yardsticks – the simcha scale and food score. Most guests can be divided into dancers or diners and their corresponding feedback usually centers around either how fun the dancing was and if there was enough room on the dance floor, or if the food was above average and how it was served. Age and other demographics do affect these but at the end of the day (or event) these are what determine word-of-mouth the morning after. Why is word-of-mouth so important? The best (and lowest cost) advertising is a happy guest and a happy client. Happy clients are our beginning, middle and end. When someone enjoys an event, they’ll talk about it and that’s how we get most of our clients. And clients bring more clients. Over the twenty years we’ve been in the industry, we’ve hosted multiple events for the same clients. We even have one client whose son’s bris, bar mitzvah and wedding were celebrated through us.
Who is your main clientele?
Is it important to book an event way in advance? It might seem important to book in advance to properly plan for your event. But we only meet with clients around three weeks prior to the event, and this apparently late planning has no ill-effect on the quality, food or décor of the event. In fact, it’s generally cheaper with all vendors to book closer to the date of the event, but you would be taking a risk and the vendor might already be booked. What kashrut certification do you offer? All our products are certified under the Yerushalayim Mehadrin Rabbanut and we offer clients the option for meat products under the supervision of Rav Machpud, Rav Rubin or Atara.
How do you take the stress out of planning and execution of an event? We appoint two event managers at the event itself – one who manages the staff during the event and the other who handles all communication with the client. During a preliminary meeting three weeks prior to an event, we request from clients confirmation of all event details including the selection of a client representative who will serve as liaison with the event manager during the event. This way, the manager does not have to bother

Expert
PSYCHOLOGIST
Ask Dr. Genstil By Dr. Sara Genstil
Q1
I work from home for a great company. My job is to call potential clients and set up an appointment for a sales representative to come and show them the product. I get paid a commission for every appointment I set. It’s a relatively easy job as I do not have to sell anything or ask for money. I know that I have to make the calls and I even know that I have to make about ten calls in order to get a prospect to agree to a meeting. My problem is that for some reason I do not make the calls. Every day I say “today I will make 20 calls per hour,” but I end up making only five or six. This story goes on and on every day. I get distracted with reading emails, watching videos, going to the fridge ten times, calling my mother, etc. I’m really scared they will fire me but I still cannot get the job done even though I’m good at it. Why is this happening to me? Is this normal? How can I overcome this?
We have to understand what the source of this negative behavior is by understanding your internal world. There can be normal surface-level reasons for doing this, or there can be deeper reasons. We can approach this from a few angles First, is there a general problem with concentration? Do you notice an inability to concentrate or complete tasks in other situations? If so, I would suggest you explore the possibility of ADHD. If you can generally focus on things, that means it’s not an organic problem but specific to this job and we have to explore why. Some people are afraid of achievement and success. Sometimes people are not sufficiently connected with themselves, their abilities and potential. They may do the bare minimum to get by, therefore not achieving their full potential. You may be lacking this enthusiasm and drive to succeed. Another obstacle may be that with sales you are met with a lot of “nos.” If nine out of every ten callers gives you a no, that would be a decently successful day of sales. So you have to realize that your goal is not to get a yes, your goal is to make the calls. Furthermore, keep in mind that the potential clients are not rejecting you, they are rejecting the product that you are offering. Some people need external boundaries to keep them on track. There are different techniques to keep yourself motivated. One idea is to close your eyes and visualize yourself doing the job without distraction, performing nonstop and crossing those calls off your list. Another idea is to schedule breaks into your work time. You may want to work for 30 minutes, and then take a break for 10 minutes. You should schedule your time in advance, writing down what time you will work, what time you will stop, and plan what you will do during your break. When you know you have the break scheduled, it’ll be easier to make the calls during the scheduled work time. 14
•
DECEMBER 2016
Additionally, some people who need external boundaries require a deadline to keep them on track. Of course, one obvious deadline would be to report (every couple hours or once a day, for example) to your boss how many calls you have made and how many appointments you have successfully set up. Again, if the problem is fear of rejection, then you need to understand your internal structure in order to find out what the rooted causes of this behavior are. This exploration is best done in a therapy setting.
Q2
My question is regarding finding the right job for myself. I’m smart, a fast learner, and have a great personality so I can relate to people very well. I go to interviews and almost always get an offer, even though I don’t have the right background or a formal education. The problem is that the salaries they offer me are not what I want to make. How can I manage to get a job offer that is suitable? You sound like a smart, capable person, but you are placing obstacles in your own way. You want a high salary without an education, so what are you doing about it? Education equals power. You have the potential, you need to prepare the groundwork. If you can manage to go forward with the education, the diplomas and the skills, then you will be on the path to success. On the other hand, even without formal education you have a lot of potential. The jobs that you have been offered that don’t pay enough often have a lot of potential. You may be taking an entrylevel job with an entry-level salary but all your assets will probably help you climb the corporate ladder. There are people that go very far without education, but everyone has to start somewhere. I would ask why you never acquired the kind of education that would lead to the salary level to which you aspire? Did you have learning issues, a problem with delay of gratification, fear of success, or other obstacles that prevented your acquiring the education that would further your career success? Again, if any of these issues have relevance to your situation, it might be worthwhile to look internally with the hope that you could overcome these obstacles, either within a therapy setting or via other support systems. If you would like to send in questions to Dr. Genstil, please send an email to psychologist@biznessmag.com and perhaps your question will be featured in the next issue of Bizness Magazine.

Young Woman & The Sea
Interview with
Avital Gold, &HUWL¿HG 6NLSSHU
Sailing!? Please tell us more. How did a successful religious accountant and mother find herself at sea?
Who is the course for? Any previous criteria or medical prerequisites?
I was contacted by phone and offered to join a course that was opening in Jerusalem (the theory was learned in Jerusalem), with no obligation. I tried it and loved it. Although there were some issues that came up being religious among a predominantly secular group, this didn’t present a problem. During the course, whenever halachic questions arose, our Rav guided me in what to do. Since sailing is so healthy mentally and so exhilarating, and because it’s not easy to undergo training as a religious man or woman under the current framework, I decided to open a religious branch for receiving boat skipper certification.
The course is open to all, men and women, above age 18. You are required to sign a medical waiver, identical to the one submitted to the Ministry of Transport when getting a driver’s license.
How has your additional role of skipper enriched your life?
I have sailed between the Greek islands. It was an extremely amazing experience and you can see the magnificent view through my photos.
The quiet — the sound of the waves is known to be mentally healthy and extremely relaxing. The open air, the beauty of the sky, the water, the sunset and, outside of Israel, the sunrise on the horizon — all these things create a wonderful energy reserve inside us, which helps us cope with everyday life. There’s a spiritual component, too. I was at a shiur once, and the speaker mentioned hisbodedus. That concept resonated with me. You feel so close to Hashem out there on the water.
How exactly is the course run? And so far from the sea too?
Is sailing intended to be a fun pastime or a serious hobby?
The classes consist of theoretical studies accompanied by instructional sailing trips for each of the main topics we learn: seamanship, navigation and mechanics. The duration of the course is about six months, with a weekly class of three hours.
For me it’s really an addiction. A good friend of mine knows if I’ve been to sea by the size of the smile on my face. But each person has a different level of enjoyment. My husband joins the family sea outings, but won’t go out on a two-hour sailing trip just for fun. In contrast, my children and I — we get so excited if we get even an hour of sailing, in any weather condition.
Have you sailed out of Israeli territory?
Are participants given any sort of certificate upon course completion? At the end of the course, participants receive the “Mashit 30” certificate, a skipper license, from the Ministry of Transport - Port Authority. This license allows one to sail or rent boats anywhere in the world.

Question: I am a 28 year old bochur “in the parsha” of dating. When I first started dating around five years ago, I was extremely anxious about going out, but everyone—my parents, my rebbeim and my friends, reassured me that I would relax with time and experience and will soon get engaged. Although I am considered a “good catch”—top yeshiva, good learner, good home, good middos—I am still very anxious when I date (which isn’t too often) and it’s not getting any better. As soon as a date is set up, I start getting headaches and stomachaches, I can’t concentrate on my learning, my chest feels constricted and I can’t sleep. My mind is constantly on the upcoming date and I obsess about it all day long. On the actual date my adrenaline is racing and I can’t focus at all on the girl because I’m too self-conscious about what she is thinking about ME. Of course, the girls usually end the shidduch, and I get so worked up... till the next girl. Then the cycle repeats itself. I want very much to get married, but how can I help myself? Answer: The symptoms that you describe: headaches, stomachaches, obsessive thoughts, lack of sleep, etc. are all classic signs of anxiety. Your friends, rebbeim and parents are correct; the more you date, the easier it generally becomes. That, however, hasn’t happened for you because compounding the issue is your extreme self-consciousness. The solution to your dating dilemma lies in a multi-pronged approach; dealing on a behavioral and cognitive level, as well as learning good communication skills in order to increase your confidence in dating. It would also be worthwhile for you to have real clarity in what you need in a future wife, so that your dates can be meaningful and goal-oriented. Together with this, it would be important to recognize the harmful, maladaptive thoughts that are causing much of your anxiety, and replacing them with healthy, confidence building thoughts. Call me! Perhaps I can help! shaindelcohen@gmail.com

Interview with
Anna Oliel,
Owner of Bamboo Flower Shop
Bamboo Flower 6hop seems like a real treat for all the senses. Can you tell us a bit about all the things you have to offer? Bamboo Flower Shop is a visual and aromatic experience. We have flowers that will enhance any simcha, brighten up any home, and spark any relationship. In addition, we offer quality chocolates, unique wines, and an array of fragrant candles.
Can you provide flowers and centerpieces for events? Bamboo Flower Shop can decorate weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, business celebrations, family events, and much more. We work within our clients’ budget and always set up on time.
What inspired you to open a cafe with a flower store? What’s the advantage of this combination? I’m French, and the French love their cafes, and they love an ambience where they can sit and schmooze and enjoy watching the people go by. That’s what we’ve recreated here. A beautiful terrace garden where people can relax and enjoy their coffee and French pastry.
While we receive fresh flowers every two days, we purchase flowers and plants from the major wholesalers in Israel. We’re always looking for the best quality at the best price.
What accounts for the unique aura in Bamboo? The aura comes, in part, from the beautiful flowers that fill our shop. We pride ourselves on making an art of flower design so that it fits the mood and style of our quaint shop. Who are your customers? All sorts of people come to our flower shop and cafe. They come to rest, to talk, to laugh, to think, but mostly they come to enjoy the smells and tastes of our cafe. Of course, most people find our flower arrangements breathtaking, which is why our clients include the many shops, restaurants, hotels and businesses around us. They realize that well-designed, beautiful flowers can attract people and bring in customers.
Where are your flowers from?
It’s hard to find flowers that last more than a few days, even from proper flower stores. Why is that? The florist has to know how to keep her flowers fresh until customers come to buy. Each type of flower has its own needs and as professionals we make sure our flowers get the attention they need to remain fresh. My clients will tell you that my flowers often last for more than a week. Any tips on how to prolong the life of flowers and plants? If possible, change the water every day. It’s also advisable to cut the ends periodically. And finally, pour a few drops of bleach into the water when you first receive your flowers. That will help keep them fresh. As for plants, they may need to be repotted periodically and you should find out their water needs from your florist.
What types of wines and chocolates do you sell? First of all, all our products are strictly kosher. We offer red wines from French winemaker David Ventura, whose winery is located in Ofra. His wines have received international praise and awards. Our chocolates come from Daskalides, the premier chocolatiers from Belgium.

Keeping
Indoor Units Clean
H
ere are three very good reasons to clean your air conditioners regularly:
1. SAVE ON YOUR POWER BILL Cleaning the coils on a dirty air conditioner/heat pump can save you up to 30% power usage for that unit. When dirty, a unit has to work harder to cool or heat the air because it is effectively choking as it tries to draw air through it. The harder a unit has to work in order to get the desired result, the more power it uses! 2. MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION All regularly used air conditioners/heat pumps become infected with “microbial contamination” which includes fungi, mold and bacteria. Air conditioners/heat pumps are the perfect environment for such contaminants and of course, become airborne every time you switch your unit on, which is bad news for asthma and allergy suffers, children and the sick. A cleaning virtually eradicates microbial contamination so you can breathe healthy air again.
3. Y OUR AIR CONDITIONER WILL LAST LONGER A regularly serviced air conditioner will last a lot longer than one that never gets serviced. If you purchase a new car and never service it, you would easily shorten its life expectancy by up to 75%! Your air conditioner is no different. Most consumers are not aware of the above and erroneously believe that cleaning the filters is enough. In truth, cleaning the filters is only “basic maintenance”. With regular usage the entire inside unit also needs to be properly serviced. At TzviAir we can regularly clean your air conditioner units in order to maintain optimal performance.

Understanding the Restless Mind Interview with Dr. Michael E. Portman, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Michael E. Portman is a clinical psychologist with an expertise in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and is an international authority on generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Dr. Portman has worked for over twenty years in diverse settings, from community mental health services to treating military personnel at the Cleveland Veterans Administration. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, and The Ohio State University, supervising advanced students. He also conducts research and trains others in the field. Dr. Portman has authored Generalized Anxiety Disorder Across the Lifespan: An Integrative Approach published by Springer-Science and was a guest editor for a special edition of Psychiatric Annals on GAD and the lead expert author of a chapter for the Elsevier publishing company (also on GAD). Dr. Portman currently resides in Jerusalem where he maintains a private practice treating children, adolescents, adults and couples.
What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and who does it affect? Is there a genetic component? Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by persistent anxiety and/or worry lasting for no less than six months, more days than not, around numerous activities and events. Other symptoms include: being keyed up (restless), sleep disturbance, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, fatigue, and irritability. GAD affects individuals of all ages and cultural backgrounds. A confluence of factors contribute to the onset of GAD and genetics, based on the research, plays a 30% role.
social anxiety disorder and obsessional thinking found in obsessivecompulsive disorder. Plus, individuals with GAD have typically experienced many stressors common to individuals struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. They may also experience panic-like symptoms unique to panic disorder. However, in GAD more global worry and anxiety is the hallmark of the condition. Having said that, GAD often coexists with at least one other ment al health disorder in 90% of cases. It has been called the “co-morbid” anxiety disorder.
Can GAD cause somatic (physical) symptoms or conditions and how does this affect the diagnosis and treatment of the patient? GAD can cause a host of somatic symptoms that can include back or neck pain, gastrointestinal distress, chest pain, rapid pulse, shortness of breath, frequent urination, dizziness, tension headaches, etc. Medical illnesses often co-occur with GAD, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hypertension, and Acid Reflux Disease (GERD). Physicians should work with mental health professionals to try to work out whether GAD is contributing to the physical symptoms and illnesses or not. Often when GAD is properly diagnosed and treated many somatic symptoms and illnesses abate or are much less intense and disabling.
At what age do symptoms of GAD typically appear? GAD can appear at any age. The most common age of onset is in the late teens and in midlife. It is estimated that GAD afflicts around 5-7% of the general population. The symptoms build steadily over time and are often not diagnosed and treated effectively until many years after they first appear.
How is GAD differentiated from other anxiety disorders such as social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, etc.?
Everyone has some anxiety at times, at what point does it need to be treated? How would a parent know when their child needs help?
GAD is more diffuse, in nature, than the other anxiety disorders. The worry is about “everything and nothing.” This does not preclude the fact that GAD sufferers do have relational/social worries like in
Anxiety has been with us since time immemorial and most individuals experience anxiety and worry at some point in their life. However, when anxiety and/or worry is intense, persistent, and
impairs functioning in broad areas of life, treatment is indicated at any age across the lifespan. In regard to children, anxiety, and GAD in particular, presents with more bodily symptoms such as headaches and stomachaches. And, worries in children with GAD are often about school performance, safety of self/others, health, disasters, war, and friends or classmates.
What are the main modalities of treatment for GAD? Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with or without medication(s) is the main treatments for GAD. CBT should be tried first as the initial form of treatment, given its effectiveness, unless symptoms are highly debilitating and/or the patient prefers medication to ameliorate the distress more rapidly.
Can GAD be overcome through treatment or is the goal primarily to improve the quality of life of the sufferer? Many patients can overcome their GAD and become free of symptoms with appropriate treatment. However,a sizable number of individuals with GAD find that their symptoms wax and wane around increased responsibilities and stressors due to change, uncertainty, and life transitions. In these cases treatment and posttreatment outcomes need to be more modest and acceptance is central for the sufferer of GAD in the recovery process.
Do you treat other disorders besides GAD? I have a general psychotherapy practice, so I do treat other anxiety disorders, mood disturbances, interpersonal difficulties, and severe mental illness.
What is your approach to the treatment of GAD and other anxiety- related disorders? My main approach to treating GAD is the use of cognitivebehavioral therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on the present, is structured, often time limited, collaborative, and tools/skills building. However, I do also use evidence-based psychodynamic therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and integrative psychotherapy. Therapy always needs to be tailored to the unique needs and clinical presentation of the person.
How did you initially get involved in GAD and how has this propelled you to become an authority in the field? My interest in GAD started in graduate school with a paper on the subject, followed by a doctoral dissertation. Soon after, in my clinical training and then in private practice, I began to see many patients with GAD. Subsequently, Dr. Aaron Beck (the founder of CBT), Dr. Vladan Starcevic (an expert on anxiety disorders), and Dr. John Riskind (a leading figure in the CBT and anxiety field)
greatly influenced and shaped my thinking on GAD. I also felt GAD was being neglected, even by mental health professionals, and viewed as a highly misunderstood anxiety disorder. My nature is to advocate for the “underdog” and GAD sufferers needed a voice. So, I felt a strong calling to become one of their voices. My status as an authority on GAD continues to be a source of surprise and excitement at the same time.
Tell us a bit about the research you have done on GAD: My research has evolved over time. I have written a full-length book on the subject, been the guest editor for a special issue on GAD, authored a chapter on GAD, and written other publications. The work task force on GAD and other anxiety disorders for DSM V (the most recent diagnostic manual for mental disorders) factored in several recent publications co-authored by myself with Dr. Beck and Dr. Starcevic and retained the name GAD with the same symptom criteria. This felt like a significant moral victory for us as clinicians/ researchers and those that suffer from GAD.
Tell us about your soon-to-be released book, The Restless Mind – Understanding Generalized Anxiety Disorder. How does it differ from your previous book on the topic? The Restless Mind is being written for an intelligent lay readership of potential GAD sufferers and their support systems. They are the primary target audience. Yet, fellow clinicians, researchers, students in mental health and others interested in learning about GAD can also benefit from this new offering. It is less academic, more accessible, practical, and self-help oriented than my first book on GAD. Plus, it will be more affordable in price.
What advice would you give to family members of those suffering from GAD or other anxiety disorders? My recommendation to family members is always be compassionate, accepting and supportive. GAD, not unlike other anxiety disorders, is a genuine, painful malady and an individual with the disorder should not simply be dismissed as “the worried well.” Encourage, in a diplomatic way, the seeking of treatment by a highly experienced mental health professional who is well trained in CBT for GAD or anxiety disorders. Psychiatrists and other physicians versed in GAD or anxiety are the ones responsible for prescribing medication, if necessary. They are important members of the treatment team. Plus, reading my upcoming book on the subject will offer even more practical and hands-on advice!

Interview with Paul Incitti, Owner of Building Care Services (BCS) What is BCS Israel? BCS (Building Care Services) Israel is a full-service A-Z construction and cleaning contractor, with over fifty years of experience in a wide variety of services that relate to properties.
How did it all begin? After I made Aliyah, I was doing this kind of work on an odd job basis for a year or so. I found that every customer I had encouraged me to build a company, telling me that they needed to get these services from a reputable, reliable and quality English-speaking provider. I listened to them, and thus my company BCS Israel was formed.
What are some of the services that you offer? • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Post-construction clean up with extreme detailing Certified mold remediation and removal expert Window cleaning of any height through rappelling Carpet, upholstery and drapes cleaning Renovations and new construction Crystal floor polishing/floor refinishing Painting – basic interior/exterior painting Light building repairs, handyman services Heavy garbage removal/sewer spill clean up Deep, thorough residential cleaning (beyond Pesach level) Rental property preparation Property management Vaad Habayit services (public spaces: hallways, lobbies, stairwells, sidewalks)
Who do you service?
Private residences, property managers, building management personnel as well as offices and commercial structures. We also work with architects, designers and other contractors who don’t provide such an extensive suite of services. Our
services are great for anyone who wants a licensed, legal, insured contractor handling their services.
Do you have your own staff or do you hire different companies for different jobs? All jobs are performed by our own people, unless there’s a requirement for a specific licensed subcontractor such as an electrician or plumber. The people we subcontract with have experience working with us on prior projects and have developed great working relationships with us over the years.
What are the advantages of using one company for so many services? Quality, reliability, accountability, knowledge, experience and flexibility. And obviously, it’s so much easier to buy one individually tailored package to meet all of one’s needs than to have to deal with six different companies. Even just keeping track of all their names and phone numbers is one big headache! The myth in Israel is that these services are to be separated for some reason. As a service provider in the U.S. you had to be able to perform all of these services as one company. The people/crews performing the tasks have specific knowledge and experience in these individual areas.
What types of renovations do you do?
We do bathrooms, kitchens, tile floors, parquet floors, plaster walls, windows, stairwells, demolition or new construction. We are widely used in complex retro fits where a unique solution is being sought.
Is your work guaranteed? How? Yes, we offer a monitoring package for any mold problems for which we have provided solutions. When it comes to any of our contracting projects, since we are the ones who built
it, we are always available to come and see if there is an issue. We generally don’t have these kinds of issues, but we certainly are available for our customers.
Do you do only big jobs or can someone call you just to get their couches or carpets cleaned?
dealing with mold problems and the like.
With such serious plumbing problems in many homes in Israel, how are you able to tackle mold effectively?
We are very flexible and can handle anything from large projects to simple ones such as cleaning couches. Whoever wants or needs our services will find their answer with us. We like to work and we give our customers what they want. Can you believe it? It’s true!
It’s true that the diagnosis and discovery process can be complex. The solutions can also be complex. In each scenario we effectively tackle moisture issues and provide a written plan for homeowners to follow after we’ve provided a solution. We generally don’t get called back unless the plan wasn’t followed or a separate moisture issue suddenly developed.
Are there certain upholstery materials that are harder to clean than others?
What has been the most memorable incident from your working career?
Yes, unfortunately certain types of stains on specific materials can be problematic. Stains might have sat over a long period of time and been absorbed into the material; or the spilled substance might contain dyes and chemicals that cause damage to the actual fiber or threading, and therefore the item cannot be cleaned. We try our best, but we do disclose these facts to our customers prior to starting. There are some materials, substances and stains that we cannot attempt unless the customer absolutely understands this. Usually the manufacturer has alternative methods and advice for such cases, but most likely they will say the same thing. We do have access to research tools on the Web, etc. and we use these as much as possible.
What do you do with stubborn stains on furniture?
Well, without giving away our methods and tricks of the trade, I can say that our technique often succeeds very well in stain and spot removing. We identify the stain and use one or more of a variety of cleaners to raise each stain and remove it for good. To tackle the stain effectively we are willing to do everything short of destroy the fabric. Our track record is excellent. That said, it would be best to know in advance that not every stain or spot is fully removable, as mentioned above. Due to a variety of factors, some might have become so embedded in the fabric as to have (a) become part of it, (b) permanently damaged the fabric underneath, or (c) changed the fabric color and integrity. Again, we will do our utmost, utilizing the best stain remedies available, but cannot in good faith promise 100% success. However, we trust our workers and our methods, based on many years of experience and success with some of the toughest stains.
What about painting? Our painting solutions are geared towards fixing up rental apartments or providing a one-color or two-color solution,
I’m saving that for the book! But to name a few memorable clients: In Israel, we have provided services to Sir Martin Gilbert, the great Rav Pearlman and to American Consulate members. In the U.S., various N.Y.-based congressmen, senators and the Marriott Marquis.
Can you provide regular weekly cleaning services? What would be the advantage over hiring someone directly?
We do provide this service to property managers with multiple properties that are rented out to guests and visitors. We have a strategic alliance with ALL THE BEST ISRAEL to provide legal, trained, and insured housekeepers to private residences.
What do you find is the biggest hindrance when your staff comes to clean a home? Generally it’s the preparation that the homeowners said they would do, but didn’t, and that we end up having to working around. These things happens and there’s not much we can do. We strive to give the most excellent service that can be provided under the circumstances.
What changes have you witnessed in the AngloIsraeli population over your years of service? I have seen many more people come into the same space as me and most of them for the same reasons. Opportunity is small here in the Hebrew-speaking world but I have also seen that start to change as well. More and more Israeli-founded companies are expanding their service capabilities and their global reach with their businesses. I believe in a strong Israeli economic base and a smoothly integrated AngloIsraeli population by working towards one goal.

AN AUTHENTIC
Dining Experience Interview with Event Manager, Itamar Lev and Chef, Eli Menachem, of Rodrigeuz Restaurant Please tell us a bit about Rodriguez. What sets it apart from the other meat restaurants in Jerusalem? Rodriguez is really professional, both in the restaurant and for events. We’re a real high-end restaurant. Rodriguez prides itself on its great dining atmosphere, both in the quality and presentation of food and the aura in the restaurant. But above everything else is our emphasis on customer service.
restaurant but the atmosphere is more fast food style. It’s faster and cheaper — great for people on a lunch break, yeshiva bochurim, etc. Our most requested express item is our asado meat sandwhich, served in a warm baguette. We’re the only place around who offers such a sandwhich, and itself greatly enjoyed - we must serve at least twenty a day! What are the benefits of doing events with you?
During the first half year of the restaurant, we learned about the customers and what they want in terms of food and service. Over the past two years since I started working at Rodriguez, I’ve been able to bring up the level of the food significantly.
Usually food at events is of a lower quality. Here it’s the same high quality as the restaurant — not just the food, but the way it is plated. When the event is at the restaurant, there is the benefit of the food being made right here on site. In addition, we provide very personal service; there are a few waiters per table.
Our goal is to make the culinary experience for the kosher diner more modern, up to date, and higher quality. We can find a substitute for everything to make any dish mehadrin.
Family events at our restaurant have the advantage of a more intimate atmosphere than a hall can provide. We invested a lot in the high-quality décor of the restaurant, which also adds to the ambience.
We also have Rodriguez Express attached to the restaurant where the food has all the quality of the

What types of events do you generally do? Birthdays, anniversaries, britot, sheva brachot and bar/ bat mitzvahs are most popular. We also cater events for many corporation such as banks, pharmaceutical companies and financial groups. We have a private room in the restaurant that seats up to 35 people or we work with a small hall for up to 150 people. We can also close the whole restaurant for private events, when needed. What are some Rodriguez favorites? For starters, we offer some delicious appetizers. A few of the top choices are: crispy eggplant, Moroccan cigars, liver pâté, and Kentucky fried chicken. For the main course, we have a wide selection of grilled meats such as asado, lamb chops, and an always-favorite meat platter. Salads are prepared on site and we have different menus for summer and winter. What is the work atmosphere like for you as a manager? Managing a restaurant takes time — it’s like managing a factory. What a customer gets on his plate has gone through so many processes — from ordering from the supplier, delivery, preparation in the kitchen, and then to the waiter until it’s on your table. The main thing is that our staff work together. My job is to work with them and to guide them. Sometimes a boss may just give directions and then leave the employees. Here, through my guidance, my employees learn to
take their own initiative. For example, at events we have different waiters in different areas. I may assign a waiter to one location but in fact there is no need for him there. In other businesses the waiter may just hang out not doing much, but by us he would want to help the team out, and he will look where else he could be useful without my having to tell him. Our staff members are professional and are veterans to the company; they stay with us because of the supportive family atmosphere. Can you give an example of how you go out of your way to please your customers? A few weeks back, some customers requested a whole turkey in honor of Thanksgiving. Although we don’t have this option on either our regular menu or our events menu, we went out of our way and were able to produce a turkey for them to celebrate their American tradition. What’s the best feedback you can get from a customer? We have some clients that consistently come once or twice a year, visiting from overseas. When they tell us the meal was as delicious as the last time, just as they expected, we’re happy. That means we are consistently providing great food, and our clients know Rodriguez is a place they can count on for a rich and pampering dining experience.

Route 38 Professional Services Ltd
Why do Self-employed and US-employed Olim
Need Payroll Consulting? Interview with Baruch Swinkin Co-Founder of Route 38
Baruch, you’re an established US corporate accountant who made aliyah 9.5 years ago. What led you to open ROUTE 38? When I moved my family from Bergenfield, NJ, to Ramat Beit Shemesh in 2007, I met a very warm, welcoming community that eased many of the stresses that accompany the transition to the land of milk and honey. Living in the relative comfort of the Ramat Beit Shemesh “bubble” still required a culture adjustment, for sure. But I really felt lost staring at the forms in the Bituach Leumi office. I struggled to carry on technical conversations, especially when they involved legalese. Even financial terms in Hebrew were foreign – and I work with numbers for a living! Route 38 is my response to address, ease, and relieve the anxiety olim can still experience when they need to deal with government bureaucracy more complex than the customer service counter in Best Market. Additionally, recent changes in operations at the tax authorities have made “living in the grey” and not reporting income quite dangerous. Nothing would make us happier than to make financial life easier for olim, so that they can keep the focus on building their businesses and careers, not on paperwork and red tape. That’s really nice. So, is ROUTE 38 an accounting firm? A manpower company? We are “payroll consultants.” Our accountants and lawyers are on retainer to advise and consult. But our niche is to provide support in our client’s native tongue. We’ve developed a unique employment structure that helps our clients minimize tax exposure, reduces the headache of paperwork and bureaucracy, and increases the amount of “take-home” salary wherever possible. In addition, we encourage our clients to take advantage of the many savings vehicles available to them, and navigate them through the legal requirements of retirement planning. 26
•
DECEMBER 2016
Do you actually set up pension plans? We work together with licensed insurance agents to help our clients open pension accounts. Once they’re in place, we deposit their funds monthly. In fact, we also directly remit funds to Bituach Leumi, Mas Hachnasah, severance accounts, and kupot gemel on behalf of our clients. That’s very convenient. Who would get the maximum benefit from your services? • Olim working in Israel for US entities • Atzmaim making 5,000 NIS or more a month who would prefer to relieve the pain of Bituach Leumi and Mas Hachnasahpaperwork • Anyone who is under the misconception that during the first ten years of aliyah they don’t have to pay tax in Israel on any money made overseas. Are you currently the only employee? Absolutely not. There is a great deal of work that goes into operations, and that’s handled deftly by a team working under the skilled leadership of Yael Frydman. She is an all-star manager who is extremely well organized, exceptionally thorough, and exemplifies the culture of high level customer service we have set as our standard. I handle the sales and marketing, and, together with Mike Kashnow, a local veteran entrepreneur, manage all of our other corporate obligations. All of us are professional payroll consultants, and we’re currently looking to hire a few high energy teammates to join us as we grow to the next level. Haven’t other companies done this and gotten in trouble? The situations are similar, but not the same. We’ve done our homework. We’ve learned from their failures, and we toe a very precise legal line. Everything we do is above-board and has solid legal footing. Our legal counsel and accounting advisors have helped us map out a strategy for a successful implementation of our dream. Mind you, not all of our competitors are facing legal issues. But we offer a comprehensive service that we’ve developed from the point of view and hard-knock experiences of olim. And our stellar customer service catapults us into a different league entirely; our native tongue is customer care. What’s the connection to the Highway 38? We are going to be the conduit for connecting the talented work force in the greater Beit Shemesh area with the rest of the world, much like the way Route 38 is the physical conduit for getting from Beit Shemesh to the rest of the world. And hey, it’s a conversation starter... why would you name your company after that disaster??? So your clients are mostly in Beit Shemesh? No. Our offices are in Ramat Beit Shemesh, but we service the entire country. We are currently assisting people from as far north as Zichron Yaakov and Tsfat, and in the south in Ashdod and Be’er Sheva. How can I sign up for your services? DENTAL CENTER
I NEED A ROOT CANAL? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? By Dr. David Schlussel, DDS
L
et’s get to the root of the matter. Little strikes more fear into the heart of a patient than the thought of having a root canal treatment. The effort and thought put into trying to get out of having the treatment never ceases to amaze me. “Do I really need to have it done?” “Isn’t it easier to take the tooth out?” “The tooth isn’t bothering me right now; can’t we just leave it alone?” “Why do I need to have it done?” The truth is, these are all valid questions, even if they might be driven by fear. To answer these questions, we must first understand what a root canal treatment (RCT) is, why it’s needed, and what the goals are of the treatment. The goals of root canal treatment I always tell my patients, “root canal treatment is your friend.” Why? Because this treatment can save your tooth, help prevent an extraction, and prevent replacement of a tooth. Once an RCT is required, there is no turning back and the only other option is to extract the tooth. Now I know none of my patients want that. Why do teeth need a root canal treatment? A little understanding of dental anatomy is required before I answer this question. When you smile, the white teeth that you see are attached to one or multiple roots that go below the gums and into the bone. These roots act as an anchor to hold your teeth in your bone. Those roots are like little pipes that have “canals” in them and they house the nerves and blood vessels that come from the bone. When the nerve is irreversibly damaged, the dying nerve can lead to pain and infection. This damage may come from a very deep, bacteria-infected cavity. The bacteria could infiltrate the root and thus damage the nerve. The damage can also come from a crack in the tooth, or the tooth may have had a lot of work done to it, such as multiple fillings. Because the root is a hard structure, once the nerve is injured, there is no room for it to heal. Once the nerve is dead or dying, then a root canal is required. So, what actually is an RCT? To rid the tooth of the dying nerve and any bacteria that might have infiltrated the canal, special instruments are inserted into the canal to clean the roots. Antibacterial irrigants are used to disinfect the canal and a sealer is placed in the canal to seal off any bacteria from re-infecting the canal. Sounds simple, right? For the patient, it is. Local anesthesia is administered with a painless
injection. Yes, I said painless. All the patient needs to do is to keep his mouth open and most RCTs can be performed in an hour and a half or less. There is no pain during the procedure and in almost all RCTs there is almost no pain afterwards either. Today’s root canal treatment is light years ahead of what our parents had to endure. Today we have electronic measuring devices that measure the length of the canal more accurately than x-rays ever did in the past. We have instruments that draw the infected material in the canal up and out of the tooth instead of pushing it into the bone. These instruments allow us to work faster and more safely and at the same time reduce the time in the chair for the patient. We also have newer irrigating tips that prevent pushing irrigants out of the roots and into the bone. These improvements and others make the treatment safer and more comfortable for the patient, which leads to greater comfort after the treatment. So now that you are well-informed about root canal treatment—and please don’t read about it online, the internet is full of misinformation that prevents people from receiving proper treatment—I know that, should you need one, you will be looking forward to having your next root canal treatment. If you have any questions or would like to book a consultation or an appointment for treatment please contact our offices. 15 Ibn Gevirol Street, Jerusalem 02-561-9770, 02-561-9780 www.rechaviadental.co.il

Around the World with Moishy’s Travel We had the pleasure of speaking with Benjy Isenberg, CEO and lead travel manager for Moishy’s Travel, to find out what services they offer for the Jewish traveler: Tell us about Moishy’s Travel. We launched in 2015 with two core business areas. We’re a hotel-focused international travel agency providing expert travel services for Jewish travelers worldwide. We specialize in family and group travel. So whenever (and wherever) your family and friends are planning a kosher vacation we can help: Pesach, Succos, summer vacation, winter break. Our other core area is of course Israel, where as an incoming tour operator we offer custom tour planning, bar/bat mitzvah, shul and community missions, wedding and event planning. We’re proud to be a member of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) — and one of the few members in Israel.
I thought the Internet had travel agents on their way out? The internet did have an impact on the industry as a whole, but agents have adapted and become a new breed of travel consultant. Our niche is Jewish travelers. Along with personal service, our clients often want us to consider Shabbos, kashrus, location near shuls, mehadrin hescherim and more when planning their travel. We’re dealing with more complex family and group hotel and travel arrangements that just can’t be done online.
What are the main advantages a client has when booking through you? SERVICE •Attentive customer service for the best travel solutions. •A travel consultant able to offer expert advice on hotels and vacation planning. In Israel, our team regularly visits many of the hotels our clients want in order to get first-hand knowledge of the hotels, make a personal connection with management, and are very familiar with the hotel. •A one-stop shop that can offer a range of options for hotels, flights, travel insurance or other travel arrangements in Israel or worldwide. PRICE Many people don’t realize that the rates travel agents can access are usually better than the general public can get.
Do local Anglos use your services or do you cater primarily to tourists and visiting family? Can you give us some examples of clients you’ve worked with? Both — local Anglos looking to travel either within Israel or abroad, be it for vacation or back to the “old country” to visit family and friends — as well as

tourists. Here are a few examples: We assisted a family (some based in the US, some here) who came to us with a challenge to create a vacation that allowed them to come together. The US-family wanted a more luxury high-end experience, while for the Israel-based family kashrus and shabbos arrangements were paramount. We found a villa with a private pool, but there were safety considerations with young children so we managed to negotiate to get the owner to put in a safety fence. Another family we assisted (again some US visitors, some here) wanted a family reunion and celebration for their grandparents at a hotel with facilities and reliable kashrus. We took the initiative to get the hotel to give a free upgrade for the grandparents. Another, more simple example is a family from Ramat Beit Shemesh. They went back to the US for summer vacation and we assisted with flights and car rental.
How did you get started in the travel sector? My degree is actually in Hotel Management and I worked for Marriott Hotels in Chicago. After working in other sectors and then on returning to Israel, I worked for two wholesale travel companies. I felt I could do a better job of providing American-style customer service. Ever since my experience at the Marriott and experiencing American customer service first-hand, I was passionate about it.
I understand Moishy’s Travel is organizing a Pesach program with Rabbi Yaacov Haber at Nir Etzion Resort Hotel, Israel – please tell us more! Your readers may be familiar with our own recently launched PesachIsrael.com brand. We’re very excited about our first Pesach with Rav Yaacov Haber at the Nir Etzion Resort Hotel, just south of Haifa, where we have found an excellent “home.” We’re one of the few programs able to offer a very high-level hechsher, heated indoor pool with separate swimming, plus family/kids program and gourmet cuisine. We still have some rooms available and partial-stay packages. See www.pesachisrael.com for more info.

Wooden Renewal
n our previous articles in this series, we discussed the wide range of choices for upholstery design and fabrics. This month, we would like to talk about the range of approaches that exist to renew the appearance of your wooden furniture. When dealing with blemishes such as scratches, dents, or faded and worn finish, you want a professional that can assess your piece of furniture and decide upon the right technique and materials. Here’s an inside look into the way a restoration professional would go about deciding how to renew your furniture. Cleaning: Wood furniture, especially chairs, can develop a thick coating over time. Chairs are commonly waxed to protect them and give them a sheen. However, if the old coating is not removed before the chair is re-waxed, a buildup of wax will inevitably develop on the surface. Dirt buildup can also come from hands as well as fats in the air in a kitchen environment. (The other day, as we were regluing chairs that were brought in to be strengthened, we noticed a thick black buildup on the back of a chair. As a complimentary service, we took turpentine and cleaned the wax buildup. It was amazing to see what a difference it made. The once opaque finish became translucent and clear.) The cleaning process is not always easy. It can sometimes take an hour to scrub a chair to remove the buildup, especially if there are carvings and crevices that require small brushes. However, it is well worth the investment to renew your quality furniture. The thick buildup is also completely avoidable by regularly cleaning your furniture, preferably with a damp cloth and nothing more unless needed. It is a good thing to remember that wood is a living thing and the finish on high-end and old furniture is often organic too. It is not plastic and it is not glass. While it doesn’t demand constant attention, it will be much happier if cared for from time to time.
Traditional finishes: With modern finishes, there is very little that can be done to renew the finish itself. As stated above, light sanding, staining and a new top coat are often good enough to get good results. In contrast, the traditional organic finishes such as French polish or shellac, hardening oils such as linseed and tung oils, as well as wax finishes, lend themselves to repair far more readily. Shellac in particular lets the new coats melt and bond with the original shellac, allowing a competent worker to renew and repair damage to a shellac finish effectively. It was once common practice to repolish the furniture with shellac. We stock over 12 types of different shellacs, four types of oils and various waxes to allow us to appropriately tackle the finish on antique furniture. We choose between these and other tools to create a touched-up effect. As opposed to refinishing furniture by stripping it down to the wood and making it new, touching up can refresh and revive the furniture less expensively, and it can be done in our workshop or in the customer’s home. While refinishing gives you ultimate control, the touch-up technique is often more practical and economical. It is commonly done for larger pieces of furniture like buffets, breakfronts, or antiques and is considered very appropriate as the need for cosmetic work is there but not the need for total refinishing. In the end the work is noninvasive and the overall appearance of the piece will be corrected and enhanced. The professional staff at Restorno will be happy to answer any questions that you have in the areas of upholstery, furniture repairs, custom-made furniture, and restoration. Your questions can be submitted to office@restorno.com, and may be published in an upcoming issue of Bizness Magazine.
Light Sanding and Staining: In order to restore your furniture’s surface and color, we can employ light sanding and light staining. Light sanding removes residue and dirt, helps to level out surface texture, and prepares the surface for an even application of the stain. The stain color should match the color of the furniture to add richness and vitality without altering the original color. We use many different stain types to suit varied finishes. When applied properly, the staining blends in seamlessly, resulting in a fresher look with new vitality. Often a top coat of finish is applied as well; we decide on which type in accordance with the type of finish on the piece. Local Touch-up: Most people are unaware that surface scratches, holes, dents, missing wood and an array of other cosmetic damage can be touched up so that it almost disappears, using high-end techniques that can often be employed in the customer’s home. We recently saved a beautiful wall-length built-in bookcase by using a special colored filler and top coat to repair scratches and dents caused by someone leaning back in a recliner chair, thus providing a visually beautiful bookcase and peace of mind to our client. Other times it might be better to accept the damage as part of the personality of the piece. Either way, it’s important to know that almost all cosmetic blemishes are curable.

INSURANCE
A Week in the Life of an Insurance Agent By Shimon Cohen
Problem / Challenge #1: Sunday A young driver, who is insured with us, was involved in an accident with another vehicle. The second driver, who was slightly injured, had no insurance. To make matters even more complex, the T-junction where this took place has no traffic sign at all. To do: Arrange insurance assessors, discuss the status of an “unmarked” junction with a traffic court lawyer, and advise our young client what to tell the police. Problem / Challenge #2: Sunday afternoon A complex travel insurance claim arises of over $80,000 in the United States. Turns out that if the client himself pays the hospital, the bill is only $13,000, whereas if the insurance company is billed – it’s $80,000! To do: Arrange for the insurance company to deposit the $13,000 into our client’s account to enable her to pay the hospital, thus saving the insurance company $67,000!!
Problem / Challenge #5: Wednesday How about this for a question? Our client who has a major medical problem applied for life insurance. He submitted all medical information and most recent results. We were sure that he would be either rejected or heavily loaded (charged more). The policy came back without any conditions and with normal rates. Are we liable to point out to the insurance company that “someone made a mistake”? To do: We asked the Rav to whom we submit all our business– related questions. His reply? If our client submitted everything and did not hide any information, we can rely on the insurance company’s decision. Interesting!
Problem / Challenge #3: Monday
Problem / Challenge #6: Late Wednesday night
Met with a retired couple who have just made Aliyah. We go over their U.S. savings and pension plans and then try and build a reasonable plan for life in Israel: supplementary health insurance, nursing care, travel insurance and cover for their new home. To do: Send a welcome package with our New Oleh Guide and plan a follow-up meeting.
I receive a call on my cell phone from a “desperate” mom in America. Her daughter is insured through us at one of the seminaries in Jerusalem. Apparently she hasn’t been feeling well for a few days and her mother is distraught. To do: Call the madricha at the seminary to check if she’s been to the doctor. (She has!) The doctor recommended a medicine, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Arrange to set up a gastroenterologist consultation as soon as possible. Get back to mother and calm her down.
Problem / Challenge #4: Tuesday Our client had an accident with a commercial van. The van struck his car while he was parked! Sounds simple, but no! The Third Party refused to pay and claimed that our client had reversed into him! We were eventually forced to sue in small claims court. Today is the day. To do: We accompany our client to the court — translate and explain where necessary, and generally “hold our client’s hand”. The result: The judge throws out the “reverse” claim and awards full payment to our client. We celebrate with coffee! 34

As a musician, my role is to enhance your event. And that means knowing how to seamlessly incorporate music into your simcha so that the event and the music become one. It’s all about knowing how to cater the music to you and your guests’ ages and tastes. Knowing how to hand-pick the soft, slow songs that serve as a pleasant accompaniment to the meal. Knowing the feisty, fun music that will have guests dashing in seconds to the dance floor. And knowing how to tie it all together without stealing the show. I’d love to play at your next event and enhance your simcha with a soundtrack you’ll never forget.

Yeshivas Arzei Levanon
An interview with the Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Simcha Sussman
Tell us how the Yeshiva started and how it fulfills a need in the community. As the Ramat Beit Shemesh community grew, many “Yeshivish Anglo” families were looking for a place for their sons to study in a healthy, warm yeshiva environment. Many of these boys could not necessarily handle the stress of learning all day or tackling a high pressure, dual-curriculum. These boys need a softer platform; a yeshiva that offered a more personal experience and closer connection with the rebbeim. Under the encouragement and guidance of Rav Chaim Zev Malinowitz, shlit”a, and Rav Elimelech Kornfeld shlit”a, the Yeshiva was founded three years ago and currently has well over 30 talmidim. What’s the Yeshiva’s mission and philosophy? Every single boy has unique talents, kochos, that Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave him. Often, the educational system is geared to educate the masses, and all bochurim are put into one big box. Unless a talmid is in the top 5% of their class, they are often left behind and not given the opportunity to realize their full potential. This leads to a warped and tragic perception that they are “just ok” and “able to get by” in life. In truth, each talmid has the innate potential to grow in Limud Hatorah, become significant members of Klal Yisrael, and to become a true super star! The Yeshiva’s mission and philosophy is to provide the environment and structure where each boy will grow in self-confidence and the belief that he has a real potential for greatness. 36

DECEMBER 2016
Can you expand on the Limudei Kodesh program? With small class sizes, we provide warm and personalized attention with the goal of providing the talmidim the right tools and skills so that they can be talmidei chachamim throughout their lives. For us, a Rebbe is not just a medium for giving over information and feeling proud of a well-taught shiur; rather, he is there to empower each talmid to actualize his own innate kochos. And through these close relationships, each talmid genuinely feels that the rebbe is looking out for his best interests. Like every yeshiva ketana, we learn Gemara, Rashi, Tosfos, Rishonim and Achronim, focusing both on pshat and lomdus. We utilize various study aids such as a white board and interactive learning to ensure that every bochur knows how to focus on punctuation, and read inside the Gemara - the tools for future hatzlacha in Limud Hatorah. Our kodesh program also includes sufficient breaks so that students can take a breather and return with renewed energy. What is the typical talmid profile of boys who attend Yeshivas Arzei Levanon? An Arzei Levanon talmid is a solid yeshiva bochur and mensch who did well in cheder or elementary-school, but, with a little more attention, encouragement or motivation, could have done even better. Our talmidim also often have unique interests or talents which we nurture and encourage, which helps develop their self-confidence in their learning and Avodas HaShem. Can you describe the Lifeskills and Electives Program in more detail? Our job in chinuch isn’t to just mass produce talmidei chachamim. Rather, it is to make sure that each boy feels that he’s been given a chance to unearth the unique talents given him by Hakadosh Baruch Hu. The Elective Program is a unique opportunity for the talmidim to develop these personal skills and talents within the framework of the Yeshiva. By engaging in a range of physical and educational activities and classes (such as English language, Math, Carpentry, Music, Computers, Sports, and Art) the boys have the opportunity to experience successes in areas

they are passionate about. We are not necessarily teaching them a profession, but rather making sure they tap into their potential. This in turn promotes self-confidence and develops success in all areas of life, including learning, middos, as well as important life skills and the basic tools they need for life. We’re always looking for new ideas and areas that can bring out talent in the boys. For example, there is currently construction at the Yeshiva, so, under the close supervision of an instructor, the students were taught basic skills and participated in the construction. This was a special and exciting task because it instilled in them not only real-life skills, but also a sense of pride in having taken an active role in building their own facilities. Where does this idea come from? Is it a new concept in education? Rav Yisrael Salanter, zt”l writes in Ohr Yisrael: “A person is an indivisible unit and all of his kochos are intertwined; success in one area will bring success to others.” HaShem gave each individual a talent for a reason and it’s each one’s obligation to use it to become closer to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. If we can bring out the unique strengths of an individual and show them that they are uniquely talented in one area, that feeling of success will make its way into Limud Torah as well. Rabbi Shlomo Freifeld, zt”l, founder of the famous Sh’or Yoshuv Yeshivah in Far Rockaway, NY, constantly used this concept to motivate and to advance the growth of his talmidim. Arzei Levanon incorporates many of these concepts in Yeshiva Ketana in Eretz Yisroel. Are you offering Bagruyot? Arzei Levanon is a Yeshiva Ketana and not a high school, and

as such, follows the directives of the Gedolim in Eretz Yisroel who request Bagruyot not be offered in the framework of the Yeshiva. However, for those individuals who are interested, external Bagruyot are an option. Would this school be appropriate for students with learning disabilities or “special educational needs?” No. Arzei Levanon is not a special-needs school. It is geared towards the average talmid who is looking for more encouragement and excitement in his learning and his life. While the Yeshiva will have educational consultants, it will not employ special-ed staff or therapists to cater for talmidim with learning disabilities. Will classes be in English or Hebrew? All classes and shiurim will be taught in Hebrew. However, the Yeshiva recognizes the unique qualities and interests of ‘Anglo’ families and students, and as such will employ rebbeim who are sensitive to these needs. The avira of the Yeshiva is mostly in Hebrew but it has an English flare. From which communities will you be drawing talmidim? Most talmidim are from Ramat Beit Shemesh, but we have students from Yerushalayim, Matisyahu, Telstone and other neighboring communities. Where do you envision boys going after Arzei Levanon? The mission of the Yeshiva is to develop confident, successful young men, who are able to pursue any path in life they wish. Through the high-level Torah skills they develop, we envision them continuing on to Yeshivah Gedolah. However, with the life skills and educational background provided in the Yeshiva, the talmidim will be empowered to pursue their individual talents and abilities. Do you have the haskama of the local Ramat Beit Shemesh rabbonim? Yes. We have guidance, support, brochos and tefillos from Rav Chaim Zev Malinowitz and Rav Elimelech Kornfeld, who together spearheaded the development of Arzei Levanon, and are very supportive and involved with the Yeshiva. Any final comment? The boys are learning and thriving, and giving their all to their limud. Boys who previously studied in chadorim or yeshivos which did not offer an Arzei-style environment, are now scoring 100% on their tests because they are finally in a yeshiva that has enabled them to tap into their own kochos and talents. Alef Alef Car Garage
Under the Management of Avner and Benny Michaeli
Winter Car Maintenance How does winter affect my car? Winter weather is much harsher on your car. Your car generally lives outdoors and is exposed almost 24/7 to the elements – even when you’re not out on the roads. The temperature drop, winds and frost that winter brings all affect the working order of various car components, so it’s always a good idea to have them checked out and ensure they’re in tip-top form. What do I need to check? It’s common sense to check and change your windscreen wipers. But it’s equally important to check under the hood and the parts that aren’t outwardly visible. The battery, brakes, tires, lights and car fluids are all essential for safe, reliable winter driving. How can I improve my car’s road handling on wet, slippery roads? Road handling is largely determined by the state of the parts that come into contact with the road. Slippery driving can spell disaster for brakes that are problematic (even if they haven’t shown any sign of a problem). Don’t take the chance of losing control of your car and make sure you ask for a brake check. The condition of the tread on your tires also affects how well your car holds the road. With decreased traction comes decreased control. We also recommend that you have your tires aligned and possibly rotated. If your tires are fairly new, you can skip this one, but if they’ve covered a lot of ground you should have them checked. When all four tires have been turning the same way for a period of time, they all develop the same wear and tear in the same places, making them more susceptible to diminished performance. If they can be rotated such that the tread wears differently on each tire, it keeps them fresher and helps avoid wayward behavior. With short winter days that bring less hours of light, as well as many potential days of rain and low visibility, it’s crucial to be visible to other drivers under all driving conditions. So make sure your front and back lights are working and clean. It doesn’t really snow here. Do I still have to worry about frost and freeze? Yes. Remember that your car spends a lot of time in direct contact with the elements and even if the temperatures aren’t cold
enough to drop snow, they can still affect the fluids in your car. Make sure that your car has sufficient anti-freeze. If your antifreeze is low, it could freeze fairly quickly and won’t be able to flow through and cool off the engine, which in turn could overheat and cause major problems that compromise your safety. Your windshield wiper fluid is also susceptible to freezing. Summer blends contain mostly water, but you might want to get an alcohol-based blend that helps prevent the fluid from freezing. Check what other winter fluids are available by your car service shop as well. What contingency items should I have in the car for winter? At the beginning of the season, put emergency items in your trunk and glove compartment. These can include blankets, boots, gloves and other winter accessories, such as an umbrella, in case you have a breakdown. Keep a gasoline keg in the trunk as well. Water is always a good idea in any weather, as are jumper cables, which are even more crucial for potential winter hazards. Before you set out on a trip, make sure you’re fueled up. You don’t want to run out of gas in the rain or freezing cold in the middle of nowhere. Keep that keg of gasoline in your car, literally for a rainy day – although if you’re careful to fuel up before you set out, you should never need it. One smart system is to never let your car go below half full. What other winter hazards should I be aware of? Slow starts, subpar performance and other issues should be dealt with in advance since winter weather can make any problem worse. A general service can make the difference between efficient winter driving and headaches that can put you in the shop when you need your car most or just don’t have the time for hiccups. Carbon monoxide leaks can be particularly dangerous during winter when windows are mostly closed. We often hear unfortunate stories that could have been avoided had leaks been detected earlier. Don’t wait; get your car checked right away. Avoid keeping your car running for long periods of time while stationary, which could cause carbon monoxide buildup in the car. If for some reason you must keep it idling, keep the windows open; you can always take out some of those blankets and warm items you stored in the trunk if it’s too cold.

How to Select a Washing Machine
he first rule for selecting a washing machine is to match the machine to the customer’s needs in terms of amount of laundry and frequency of use. For example, a family doing laundry almost every day shouldn’t buy the most simple and inexpensive machine. Problems will arise right away: heavy loads in a simple machine would destroy the bearings usually during the first year. But a single person doing laundry once every week or two probably doesn’t need the biggest, most technologically advanced machine. Other important parameters to consider: 1. The RPM (rotations per minute) of the spin cycle affects the amount of water that can be “squeezed” out of your clothes at the end of the wash cycle. Effective squeezing shortens the time your dryer will need to finish the job, and thus will save you electricity. 2. Capacity: Using the weight of the laundry that the machine can hold, calculate the number of loads you will need to wash based on the amount of laundry you typically do. A family would prefer a large capacity washing machine to do fewer, bigger loads, while a single person could easily use a machine with a significantly smaller capacity.
3. Level of energy or consumption: It’s always good to save energy, but it’s especially important if laundry gets done at least once per day. 4. Cycles: Availability of short cycles saves time and electricity. This is where an analysis of features would be helpful. For instance, an economy cycle could shorten the wash time for clothes that are not very dirty. A cold water wash option would save electricity. 5. Timer: Machines equipped with timers to start at a later time allow you to program your washer to start late at night when electricity is cheaper. Along with these considerations, determine if you prefer a top-loading washing machine or a front-loading machine. Each has pros and cons, but ultimately, it has to be comfortable to use. It’s important to ensure that the machine fits in the space (and can be brought in through the door); this is especially important if you choose to purchase an extra large capacity machine. Check to be sure that the machine can be firmly anchored so that the vibrations during the wash and spin cycles don’t cause annoyances. Good luck with your washing machine purchase!

ONE BRAIN THERAPY
A Total Willingness By Shlomo Perkins
I
n a previous article, I discussed the importance of restoring responsibility, or ownership, at the beginning of every Perkins One Brain session. Now I am going to explain the step right before this. We need to make sure that you have “100% willingness to derive welfare from the session in all Five Bodies.” But what does this mean? Total willingness to derive welfare from the session is your desire to actually benefit from the work that we do together. Whenever you come to a session, you have to want to come. It’s fine if someone recommends it, as long as you agree on your own. Even after you are already here, there are sometimes subconscious blockages that stop you from wanting to change, and consequently feeling better. This is a logical way of trying to protect yourself, but in order to get the results that you consciously came for, we will release the subconscious blockages in order to make sure you are completely ready to benefit from our time together. These subconscious blockages can take place in one or more of the five “Bodies” we have, which is now referring to the second part of the sentence. One Brain works with the understanding that we are made up of Five Bodies: the Physical Body, the Mental Body, the Emotional Body, the Essential Body, and the “X-Factor” Body. In order to want to get better, we have to be at peace with all five of these bodies and to want to derive benefit in each one. The Physical Body is the visible and material self. It is our responsibility to care for our physical needs and not to neglect ourselves. In order to be in a state of good health and choice, we have to first make sure that we are paying attention to the various needs of our physical body. If muscle checking reveals in your session that you don’t have 100% willingness to derive welfare in the Physical Body, you could be denying various needs, from food and sleep to physical affection, or even limiting right brain “female” energy or left brain “male” energy. The Mental Body is your deep subconscious belief system. These “shoulds” or “have tos” are not always in congruence with who we truly are. If you don’t have 100% readiness to derive welfare in your Mental Body, it means that you are conflicted in your mind because your thoughts of who you should be are based on who you were taught to be, not on who you in fact are. The Emotional Body is a guide for who we truly are. It coincides with my second article about each person’s unique structure and function. We all have different emotions and different needs. If you don’t have 100% willingness to derive welfare from this 40

DECEMBER 2016
session in the Emotional Body, it means that in order to get better, you have to trust your instincts more. The Essential Body is a different way of saying the spiritual body. “Essential” is used because in too many different cultures the word “spiritual” comes with different baggage. The question is if you are expressing yourself completely in the present in the way you would like. If you don’t have 100% willingness to derive welfare in the Essential Body, then you need to work on being aware in the present moment of the choices and options that you have. The “X-Factor” Body has to do with the things that we show people about ourselves, which aren’t actually our true selves, in order to shield or protect ourselves from negative experiences. Everyone has a different source, or combination of sources, they use as shields, from pets to television to mythology to other people. When people meet us they meet these energies, thinking that these energies reflect who we actually are, but this reflection is not who we truly are. If you don’t have 100% willingness to derive welfare in the “X-Factor” Body it is time to show your true self. During a session, when the muscle shows a blockage in at least one of these five “Bodies,” an energy exercise will be used in order to reach total willingness to benefit from the session. Once we establish this, you are ready to move toward making a change and we will proceed.

MORTGAGE
Things are Looking Up! By Moshe Wilshinsky, CEO, Moville Mortgage and Finance Ltd.
I
have written a number of times this year about the longawaited rise in mortgage interest rates that is now upon us. This rise is not just a result of the increases in the underlying interest rate markets that directly affect Israeli mortgage interest rates, but it was also due to fundamental shifts in the way Israeli mortgage banks are funding mortgages and, more importantly, their approach to the Israeli consumer. What the mortgage banks are doing is increasing their margin, i.e. the amount of interest they charge over their own costs of purchasing money. Since my last article, this has all come about and has been commented on by the media in Israel, both in Hebrew and in English. 2016 saw Brexit and the election of a new US administration with a different direction and a renewed confidence. The capital markets have concurred that there is renewed hope since the US elections. The US stock market indexes are all up measurably. As I write this article the interest rate on the 10- year Treasury bond is the highest it has been since 2014. This rise is significant because the bond is the leading index for pricing mortgages in the US as well as for long-term interest rates the world over. Again this can be attributed to the attitude that has emerged post election, that the US economy will grow, thereby forcing the hand of the Federal Reserve to make interest rate increases. The US elections were not the only political show that everyone was watching; the other political arena was in the oil producing countries, both members and non-members of OPEC. Oil has risen well above its lows of 2016 and, at the time of writing, seems to be going anywhere but down. All of these factors I have mentioned, as well as many more, are creating an environment for mortgage interest rates to keep increasing. So where does this leave anyone contemplating buying a property in Israel or taking a mortgage on an existing property in 2017? You should keep all this in mind and, when budgeting, make your calculations about what mortgage interest rates you will pay when you eventually buy the property. For example, budget a monthly payment that is higher by one half of one percent more than what you are told is the going market rate. As previously explained, the interest rate you will pay will only be finalized when you actually take the money from the bank. So if you are thinking about it now, by the time you have found the property, have paid your entire down payment to the sellers and are in a position to have the bank fund the mortgage and pay, the balance may be six months, nine months or more away. While no one can be certain what Israeli mortgage interest rates will be at that time, you need to consider the possibility that, as Israeli mortgage interest rates have increased as significantly 42
•
DECEMBER 2016
as they have in 2016, this may continue in 2017. Every borrower who has an approval, called in Hebrew an “Ishur Ekroni,” or has even signed loan documentation should keep in mind that the probability is that, by the time the bank funds the mortgage (i.e. pays it to the seller’s or to the borrower’s account), the mortgage interest rate will increase — unless of course it was done within a few days of the signing. But don’t let higher interest rates get you down! The mortgage market changes we are going through are cyclical — not on a seasonal basis — but across a decade or so. This is reflected both in the rise and fall of interest rates as well as the lenders’ behavior. One moment they seem to be pushing money out the door (think of pre 2008!) whilst at another time they are pushing people out the door. (Tried to apply lately?) Fear not! In the scope of things, we are still within healthy historic norms. It is always important to remember the difference between the Israeli mortgage marketplace to that of the US, UK or almost anywhere else. It is like comparing the experience of someone just starting in their career to a seasoned professional. The Israeli mortgage banks have only been lending from their own funds since 1990 (previously they administered government-funded mortgages), whereas the US and UK have markets that, whilst they have significantly evolved in the past 40 to 50 years, go back more than a century. This is not to say the banks and professionals are not experienced, but to point out that the regulatory framework, industry practices and products in these other countries took many decades to evolve — we are only in the middle of our third decade. Over the 25 years that I have had the privilege to watch this market develop, there is real movement in government initiatives. Now they are concentrated on first-time buyers, combined with a realization that there is a need for change. This article will be published during Chanukah, an event which, I was taught, was the result of developments over centuries in our national identity and the fight for what it meant to be ourselves. We shone as a nation and, with the help from the One from above, we were victorious. My hope and prayer is that the regulatory focus will shift from solely protecting the Israeli banking system from systemic risk (e.g. a “2008” type event) to finding ways to enable Israeli mortgage borrowers to responsibly finance the purchase of their primary residence, easily and effectively. I wish all of our readers a Chanukah Sameach.

Furniture for the Young Couple “Mazal Tov to a new Bayit Ne’eman B’Yisrael! And of course, much nachas to your parents!” Every year, during wedding season, many young couples visit our store for a pre-wedding consultation and advice on how to furnish their new home. Young couples need to live near their places of study but there is an acute lack of adequate housing for sale, which has led to a steady rise in property prices especially in religious and ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods throughout Israel. Today, in contrast to a couple of years ago, the large majority of young couples can only afford to rent an apartment. The parents of these couples often walk into our store, clearly already overburdened with the yoke of paying for a wedding and supporting their children, while the young couple, on the very cusp of beginning a life together, sit beside their parents wearing rose-tinted glasses. Our job is to give them a reality check. The best advice we and all the furniture professionals can give is to invest in good quality above all else. Healthy sleep and carefree years of enjoyment rest on the quality of the raw materials and workmanship (and siyata dishmaya, of course). Of course this doesn’t mean you need to break the bank, and if you plan to live in an apartment for a short three to four year period from the time of the wedding, here are some sound options for purchasing your first furniture. If you’ve beat the odds and you own your own apartment, these options are no less relevant!
1. Sleep Quality – This is determined by the quality of your mattress and the ambience in the room. We recommend not investing in solid wood which is unnecessary, and not worth the risk of damage when moved. However, never underestimate the quality of a mattress and always invest in a good mattress from a good manufacturer with a good warranty. A good manufacturer is a brand that is at least wellknown in the Israeli market, such as local brand Aminach, or high quality mattresses imported from the United States such as Sealy Posturepedic, Simmons or King Coil. We also recommend buying basic bed bases with internal storage for linen and other items, which will turn out to be a great space saver in those tiny rental apartments typically rented by young couples. We discourage customers from buying furniture to

fit the dimensions of a particular room in a rental apartment or irregular or custom dimensions. Rather use common sense and purchase a standard size that will be able to fit any room, but wide and comfortable enough to serve your current needs and go the distance (at least 10-15 years).
2. Beds and Bases – High-riser beds currently available on the market are practical because that they don’t take up space, can be moved easily from here to there, and serve as a neutral piece of furniture in any type of bedroom layout you might have now or in the future. Of course, their low price tag makes them worthwhile and cost-effective which can leave you with enough cash in your pocket to invest in good quality mattresses.
3. Closets – If you own your apartment, we would recommend buying a closet made of plywood from a good manufacturer with a good warrantee, who can offer assemble-dismantle services and supply spare or replacement parts. But if you plan on living in a rental, our recommendation is to either buy a very cheap closet and know that this apartment will be its first and final resting place, or buy a good quality plywood closet that one day can be dismantled carefully and correctly and reassembled in your next home. We still maintain that you should not buy a closet to fit the specific dimensions of the rental apartment.
4. Other Items of Furniture – Investing in dressers, chests-of-drawers or any other bedroom furniture is not recommended when moving into a rental apartment. Any time they move across a room, their sturdiness and quality are compromised and even if they’re good quality, there’s no guarantee they’ll stay in good shape if they’re transported or moved. In many cases, once a nail or screw comes undone, it will never hold the same.
Olam HaMizronim is always happy to provide you with more tips, advice or ideas. We’re watching not only your back, but your quality of life and pocket too.

Micro and Macro The
By Meryl Cohen
W
hen I observe the world around me, I cannot help but intuitively understand that the variations of nature reflect G-d’s ability to create an infinitely varied world, where no design is repeated exactly. The concept of an infinite G-d creating an infinite number of ways to see beauty in the world animates my art. In particular, the fusion of fabric and paint in my art allows me to see the world in patterns as well as in a textured and multidimensional way; my work is not flat but round. Seeing is not our only way to capture the beauty of trees. I remember visiting the giant sequoias in California. Highdefinition television cannot capture the awe that I felt. We can feel trees and smell them. Did you know the sequoia has spongy bark? Oh, and we can taste trees, too: lemons, mangoes and tangerines. Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree is exactly right: Trees give shade and lumber and fruit and beauty. I paint pictures of parts of objects: trees, flowers and even cars. The micro view fascinates me because it reflects the macro world. Indeed, texture and pattern are visible in all of Hashem’s creations. It is my hope that the viewer will see both the micro and macro view of the world, observing nature in all of its divine beauty and detail.

FIRST RESPONSE
Hypothermia and Preserving Body Heat
Part 1
By United Hatzalah
B
ody heat is in effect the balance between the heat we produce and the heat we emit in various ways. The body’s temperature is on average 37 degrees Celsius. The human body constantly produces heat and usually the temperature exceeds 37 degrees, but we nevertheless retain a balanced body heat. On the other hand, even when the outdoor environment is colder than usual, we still manage to maintain the basic body temperature of 37 degrees. All this is a result of special body heat balancing mechanisms located in the hypothalamus (a part of the brain) whose function is to maintain the balance between excess heat (hyperthermia) and lack of heat (hypothermia). There are several types of mechanisms which produce body heat. These systems will produce and maintain a balanced body temperature. When functioning excessively, they are liable to cause heat stroke (hyperthermia) and when they fail to function, they may cause frostbite (hypothermia). • The muscular-skeletal system produces the most body heat via energy production and constant activity. The hypothalamus recognizes when we get cold and activates the muscles’ heating system in the form of vibrations and movements in order to balance the body’s temperature. On the other side, strenuous exercise — or excess activity of the muscular-skeletal system — can cause hyperthermia, as can be seen during trips, exercise, and various sports competitions. In addition, even after routine exercise, the body reaches very high temperatures after muscle activity and it takes a long time to return to the normal range. • Another organ that produces a large amount of heat is the liver. The liver is a large metabolic organ in the abdominal cavity and its main function is to allow enormous amounts of blood to undergo various metabolic processes. These processes require energy which produces a great amount of heat. In addition, the large amounts of warm blood flowing through it make it the hottest organ in the human body. Therefore, a decrease in liver function will cause the body temperature to drop, as in patients suffering from cirrhosis or viral hepatitis. • The blood system has an important function in maintaining body heat. In cases of hypothermia, the blood vessels contract, which causes heat to be maintained deep down within the skin and fat tissue, thereby less blood is exposed to the outside temperature and this preserves the body heat so it won’t be emitted. This is 46

why we may turn pale in cold weather. In cases of hyperthermia, (excess heat), the blood vessels expand in order to move as much blood as possible to peripheral areas and transfer heat out of the body. And that is why we may turn red in the cold. • There are many additional mechanisms which can affect the level of heat preservation, production and heat loss, such as: age, physical structure, muscle mass, fat percentage, hormone levels, changes in the biological clock, stressful situations and more…. Why is heat preservation so important? When the body reaches a state of hyperthermia— extreme temperature elevation, by definition above 40 degrees Celsius — proteins in the body are exposed to heat and undergo a process known as denaturation. This is a process by which the protein changes its spatial structure; it hardens and disintegrates until it is no longer active. Since proteins are an integral part of normal body function, any damage to them constitutes an immediate threat to life. When the body reaches a state of hypothermia — extreme temperature reduction, by definition below 35 degrees Celsius — body processes begin to slow down. To be more specific: bradycardia (slow heart rate) to the point of asystole (flatline, or no heart activity), bradypnea (abnormally slow breathing), decrease in metabolic processes, decrease in various hormonal and enzyme activity and, in fact, all functioning of vital body organs such as the pancreas, liver, kidneys and spleen. This slowing down of functioning may result in a deep coma, or worse, death. We will resume our discussion of hypothermia next month with a discussion on what sectors of the population are at a higher risk.

Orly Friedman:"I fully guarantee results"
Because saying something like this requires complete confidence in one’s path, technique, approach and results
This is the answer I receive from Orly Friedman, of the clinics bearing her name, when I ask her, "Why choose you?" When I ask her to explain this very binding sentence, she is already prepared and she emphasizes each of the justified reasons why her clients are satisfied. Here I present to you the principles in which Orly believes: The use of advanced technology - The equipment at the clinic is of the best available; this equipment helps clients to achieve exceptional results and therefore lessens the amount of treatments needed. The use of the finest and highest quality materials - The products at the institute and my precise matching ability guarantee effective results. Individualized work method with each client Each client receives personal treatment in order to provide an accurate response to her needs and desires. Uncompromising professionalism - Our team of cosmeticians are highly knowledgeable and experienced. The equipment and products are the most advanced available and suit our clients’ contemporary requirements. All this is in order to provide our clients with the best treatment and to fully guarantee results. Thirty years of experience - My many years of working in this field mean that I’m thoroughly acquainted with all skin types, possible issues, the types of treatments available and I am able to provide accurate and individual feedback to each client. Fair and objective information - Each client can make her own informed choice that fits her personal budget and also resolves the issue. Guidance and support for leveraging results Instruction for home maintenance, so you’ll
always look your best. That certainly sounds good. But does it look good?
To this end, we came to the clinic for a visit. We were warmly received with a hot drink and were given a seat in the luxurious waiting area. We peeked in Orly’s guest book, in which clients (by choice) thank her for her dedicated and professional treatment. And we even spoke with a few of them. This is what they had to say: B.R.: "Orly has what all cosmeticians need to have - lots of experience, warmheartedness and, above it all, professionalism." A.M.: "She treats me like a loving mother and never experiments on me." Y.M.: "Orly is humane, genuine and friendly. But, most importantly, she’s a professional." P.B.: "I’ve recommended her many times and even gave my friend a gift certificate for a facial with Orly. My personal experience and the fact that I keep coming back to her speak for themselves — the results are amazing!” R.R.: “Incredible amount of attention. Homey-feeling, High-level products and very clean. Above all — professional!” D.R.: “Orly has many years of experience. I don’t trust anyone else.” In conclusion, Orly, do you have anything else to add? “I’m here to give my clients the best there is: professional treatment, attention to detail and, more than anything else, my client’s best interest. Because everyone deserves to look her best.” Orly Friedman, experienced cosmetician of over 30 years, successfully operates two branches, one in Jerusalem and the other in Beitar Illit. She offers cosmetic treatment to help solve skin problems and personal care with real professionalism, excellent service and fully guaranteed results.
