Simcha Planning with Soul and Sanity Rachel Schreiber is a professional simcha coach who has developed a holistic approach to preparing for a wedding
E
By Heidi Tapnack
ach wedding is a world of its own with unique dynamics and details that all have to fall into place when the chosson and kallah finally stand beneath the chupah together. Preparing for a wedding can be very stressful, since the burden of meeting the desires of all parties usually falls on the shoulders of the bride and groom’s parents. The pressure is further compounded when various people offer you contradictory advice, leaving you stressed, confused and losing sleep as you try to keep your balance in the whirlwind of preparations. But what about enjoying the simcha? Living the moment? Appreciating and cherishing the event as a significant milestone and joyous occasion? “There is definitely an alternative,” says Rachel Schreiber. “But it requires you to be proactive and do something for yourself so that you can ultimately give a lot more to all the parties involved.” You may have considered turning to a professional for help, but hesitate when you think about the time you’ll have to set aside for yet more meetings, the additional money you’ll be spending and the energy it will take to discuss the details of the wedding with yet another individual. While some individuals choose to brave it alone, others eventually reach the conclusion that they could really benefit from some assistance. For many people hoping to make it through this rite of passage into shver and shviggerhood in one piece, having an impartial experienced person to support you may be just the solution. Rachel Schreiber is a professional simcha coach who has developed a holistic approach to preparing for a wedding. Rachel’s role isn’t to help choose table cen-

terpieces, but rather to share her secrets of macro-management. And she is always just a phone call or email away to give her clients the practical or emotional support they need throughout the process, particularly when crises arise. Rachel’s clients shed light on how her organized, pragmatic approach is so helpful:
My ultimate goal is to ensure that after all the arrangements and logistics are taken care of, you are still left with enough mental and emotional fortitude to connect with HaShem as well as your family during this special time. Rachel Schreiber Professional Simcha Coach
“Rachel was a calm and sturdy anchor during such an intense time. She let me unload the pressure and navigate the myriad of tasks in an organized way, giving me more time and peace of mind to appreciate the true essence of the occasion,” says one grateful mother. “She not only eases the burden, but also brings joy and meaning to the process,” echoes another. Rachel explains, “The ba’alei simcha do all the work. And although they do get credit for it at the end of the day, they are often lacking a toolbox for formulating a systematic plan, focusing on the details as well as the event as a whole, and feeling grateful for their role. They aren’t relaxed enough to see both the period leading up to the wedding and the wedding day itself as a time of opportunity and blessing, rather than an endless, laborious task list. My method of coaching teaches them how to tackle all the logistics, while processing the magnitude of the occasion and thereby being properly equipped to face everything it entails.” “We break down the event into manageable tasks, learn the mechanics of planning step-by-step, and amass tools for overcom-
ing the emotional challenges that accompany it,” Rachel explains. Her background in parenting, time-management and coaching enables her to offer clients a variety of practical tools, including Torah resources and hashkafic materials. This helps make the period leading up to the wedding an uplifting spiritual journey. For example, one of the exercises she does with clients is called “Expecting the Unexpected”. This focuses on the realization that despite all our planning, ultimately nothing is in our control. By walking clients through some realistic and common scenarios that could create a small hiccup or even spell disaster, she provides the tools to put “surprises” in perspective, let them go, and just get on with enjoying the simcha. Rachel also offers clients tools to find expression for all the emotional demands that arise during the wedding period. How to cope with your feelings when “Rachel was a calm and marrying off a child. How to transition into the new sturdy anchor during such role of being parents-in-law, an intense time. Rachel knows that even with the best planning in the world, and attention to every minor detail, you will never achieve true satisfaction if you don’t have the emotional challenges under control. “The key to success is organization, empowerment and clarity in prioritizing,” Rachel sums up her approach. “If you know how to handle all aspects of the event in a methodical way, the basics will fall into place and you’ll be free to focus on the essence of the occasion. You should always keep in mind the holy aspects of this milestone in your family’s life. My ultimate goal is to ensure that after all the arrangements and logistics are taken care of, you are still left with enough mental and emotional fortitude to connect with HaShem as well as your family during this special time.”

THE ENGAGEMENT PROCESS
Mazal Tov! They're Engaged! Now What?
I
By Bracha Cohen
t’s official! Meet our newest couple; Chaya and Moishy who have been seriously dating for the last short while. At the advice of the veteran shadchan, an expert negotiator between the two sides, Moishy has been prepped to propose. All set with a single red rose, against a scenic country backdrop; he finally musters up the courage to pop the question. Without missing a beat, Chaya immediately agrees, mazel tov – it’s a match! They savor the specialness of the moment together, and ask a bystander to capture a snapshot to show future generations b’ezras Hashem.
L’Chaim
Hot off the press! After spreading the special news to family and friends, the latest couple heads back to Chaya’s house to celebrate a “l’chaim”. L’chaim in Hebrew literally means a toast “to life”. When a couple becomes engaged, they get together with friends and family to celebrate. Since they drink a l’chaim (a wine or whiskey toast), the celebration is formally called a “l’chaim”.
Vort / Engagement
Several days or weeks later, Chaya and Moishy’s families decide to hold a formal engagement party in a small local hall. In Yiddish, this party is called a “vort”, which means a “word.” At the vort, the man and woman traditionally give their “word” and formally commit to marry. In some circumstances, the baalei simcha may combine the l’chaim and vort parties into one, in order to save on expenses or depending on the locality of the families. After several heartwarming speeches and much merriment, often the two future mothers-in-law take hold of either a ceramic plate or china dish and smash it to pieces. Mazel Tov! This is to symbolize Moishy and Chaya’s serious commitment to one another: Just as breaking the plate is final, so too, the engagement is final 16 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
and not easily terminated. The breaking of the plate tempers the intense joy of the occasion, similar to the glass which is broken under the chuppa. It also reminds us that the Beis Hamikdash is not yet rebuilt. Some postpone this custom until the wedding, just before the chuppa (see below).
Tena’im: Conditions of Marriage
After World War Two, it became the custom to make formal “tena’im” (conditions) before the wedding to prevent such difficulties which were commonplace in the post-war confusion. Thus, the tena’im ceremony was shifted to right before the wedding to prevent it being broken. Chaya and Moishy and their families will fulfill this duty right before the chuppa, representing a clear direction of the chosson to carry out his promise to marry the kallah. Although, in some Chassidishe circles, it is still more common to sign the tena’im document at the actual vort. This is because according to tradition, standard tena’im should be spelled out clearly, before the marriage ceremony, in a written document by the groom and bride and their respective parents. Since, even if the chosson and kallah later reconcile, the breaking of a formal tena’im contract is very shameful.
Aufruf
Time flies when you are having fun! Chaya and Moishy’s engagement has simply flown by and it’s already the Shabbos right before the wedding. It is important to note that engagements may be shorter or longer
depending on personal family circumstances. This is known as the “aufruf,” where in Ashkenazic circles, Moishy will be called to the Torah for an aliyah. This impresses upon the couple the importance of looking to the Torah as their guide in married life. The chosson is called upon to read the letters of the Torah, which contain the ten utterances of creation; as the chosson and kallah together will ultimately maintain the world by raising children who will busy themselves in Torah study. After his aliyah, some shul congregations have the custom to shower the chosson with raisins and nuts, symbolic of their wishes for a sweet and fruitful marriage blessed with many children. Meanwhile, on the same Shabbos, the kallah’s family and friends arrange a party (forshpiel or Shabbos Kallah) for her, expressing their same wishes for her. In contrast, a Sephardic groom’s aufruf is held on the Shabbos following the wedding rather than the one preceding it and is known as a Shabbat Chattan or Avram Siz. This is because the passage in Bereishis where Avraham sends his servant, Eliezer, to find a suitable mate for his son, Yitzchak is read. The paragraph starts with the words, Avram Siz, which is Aramaic for “Avram was old.” As is customary, during the week before the wedding, Chaya and Moishy will not see each other until the actual chasuna. Some couples also have the custom not to appear publicly without an escort from a few days before until a week after the wedding, as the couple is considered royalty during this time.

PREPARING FOR YOUR WEDDING
Choosing the Right Kallah Teacher Mazel Tov on your daughter’s engagement! You must be so excited! By Yitti Bisk
Y
our head is awhirl with the million and one details that need to be attended to: the hall, the caterer, the wedding gown, the attire for the rest of the family, the band, the photographer, the invitations... Oh yeah, your daughter needs a kallah teacher. Hmmm... maybe you should just ask a friend who she used (and make sure the teacher’s not too expensive, since you’re probably way over budget for the wedding). There’s no time to deal with everything, right? Well... no. Long after the flowers have wilted and the wedding album is stored, the benefits of proper hadracha become crystal clear. The kallah teacher that you choose will be opening for (perhaps) the first time a new world for your daughter. The investment that you make in finding the right teacher is an investment in the future of your daughter’s married life. Here’s what you need to find out before settling on the right teacher. HALACHA: Who did the kallah teacher learn from? Who does she ask her shailos to? Does she teach the halachos in a way that the kallah can differentiate between an actual issur, a chumra, a mesorah, or just a good idea? Does she encourage the couple to have a relationship with a rav? HASHKAFA: Learning the halachos properly is very important. The halachos are detailed and it’s not always an easy mitzvah to keep. Learning the proper outlook behind the halacha helps the couple understand the importance of what they are keeping. A good kallah teacher will inspire your daughter to become a proud “member of the club.” 18 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
THE MARITAL RELATIONSHIP: Often this is the first (and sometimes the only) time your daughter will be hearing details of married life and almost certainly the first time she is being given the Jewish hashkafa on intimacy. In today’s environment, a typical frum young lady may be exposed to, on one hand, incredible amounts of non-Torah information (and misinformation), and on the other hand, no information on the home front. It is imperative to the future of her relationship and her family that she develop a positive, Torah-based outlook on this most important facet of her relationship with her husband. Even a young woman who was blessedly raised in a bubble of holiness and purity needs the proper Torah hashkafa in this area. Any discomfort or negativity on the part of the teacher in this area will be passed over to her. Make sure the teacher is comfortable and knowledgeable in sharing this information. A competent kallah teacher will also present a clear and practical instruction that will give the kallah confidence and positive anticipation for her marriage. RELATIONSHIP SKILLS: A loving relationship between a husband and wife is a science, not a mystical happenstance. Giving the couple the tools they need to develop healthy relationship habits right from the start will pay far greater dividends than trying to correct bad dynamics later on in the marriage. If the chosson and kallah teachers don’t offer this, encourage your children to take classes, meet with a mentor or a rav, or learn together how to make an already good marriage even better! Some other thoughts on choosing your daughter’s teacher: You want to find your daughter someone
who will keep in touch with the kallah over the shana rishona. A meeting after the wedding (about 6–8 weeks later) to clarify any questions that have come up in any area of the marriage is very important. I always tell my kallahs that it’s as if they’re learning how to drive a car while sitting in a chair. It’s all theoretical. Once it becomes practical, that’s when the questions should be coming up. More importantly, the kallah should have a built-in venue for raising questions or concerns that have arisen over the first weeks of marriage. The teacher should make the kallah feel comfortable to contact her at any time—now or in the future. Your daughter should feel that she has someone to call when she has any questions. And she should feel that all of her questions are taken seriously. Look for a teacher who is experienced enough to pick up on any vibes of negativity or doubt; someone who knows how to ask the right questions and listens with a “third ear”—intuition. A kallah teacher is like a first responder. She is often the first to notice when something is not going well, and to refer the young woman to relevant assistance. You also want a teacher who is secure enough to say, “Great question; I don’t know the answer, but I will find out for you.” Hatzlacha in your quest. May you be blessed with only nachas from your young couple! Mrs. Yitti Bisk has been happily teaching kallahs for over 25 years. She is a Marriage Educator and Relationship Coach and runs workshops that provide practical tools and tips for making your marriage great. Mrs. Bisk lives in Ramat Beit Shemesh with her husband and children. Yitti can be contacted at 052-553-5160 or yittib@gmail.com.

THE TRADITIONAL JEWISH CHASUNAH
What to Expect at Your Wedding
T
By Bracha Cohen
he big day has arrived! Everyone is excited. For Chaya and Moishy though, this special day has the added dimension of being a private Yom Kippur. They fast until after the chuppah, add Yom Kippur confessions to their afternoon prayers, recite tehillim and ask for forgiveness for their sins, before starting their new life together.
Kabbalat Panim / Badeken
At the wedding, pre-ceremony receptions are held separately since the chosson and kallah do not see each other during the week prior to the wedding. Relatives and friends go to greet Chaya and Moishy individually, offering them their blessings. During the kabbalat panim, the tena’im contract is most commonly signed. This written document, containing all the formal conditions of marriage, is read, reviewed and finalized. A plate is broken unless this has been done previously at the vort (engagement party). Next, before the chuppah, the chosson, escorted by his father and father-in-law, and accompanied by relatives and friends, goes forward to veil the bride. This is called the badeken. With a big grin on his face, Moishy slowly and carefully brings down the veil over Chaya’s face. This act is in remembrance of when Rivka Imeinu veiled her face before marrying Yitzchak. This ancient minhag indicates that the chosson promises to clothe and protect his future wife. The badeken also symbolizes covering a valuable treasure and impresses upon the kallah to value her status as a married woman. 20 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
Chuppah Ceremony
Moishy solemnly puts on a kittel, the traditional Yom Kippur white robe, to remind him of the day’s seriousness and for spiritual purity. Ashes are placed on the chosson’s forehead as a reminder that the Beis Hamikdash is yet to be rebuilt. Moishy is lovingly escorted by his father, father-in-law and others to the chuppah outside. They are followed closely by Chaya who is accompanied by her mother, motherin-law and other women. This procession marks the kallah’s transition from her parents’ home to her husband’s. The chosson waits for the arrival of his kallah to welcome her into their new “home.” It is proper for the guests to rise upon the arrival of both the chosson and kallah, as befits royalty. Moishy and Chaya’s chuppah takes place outside, under the open sky, in order to evoke Hashem’s blessing to Avraham Avinu that his children be as many as the stars. In more Yekkishe circles (Jews of German descent), the chuppah takes place inside the shul. The chuppah represents the fervent desire that their home be under Hashem’s guidance and protection. Under the chuppah, Chaya and the mothers encircle Moishy seven times. Since the world was created in seven days, the kallah is metaphorically creating the walls of their new home. Other reasons for the seven circuits include; the seven-fold bond that will be established between the extended families and the seven times that tefillin straps are wrapped around a man’s arm.
Kiddushin and Nisuin
The chuppah ceremony now proceeds with two intrinsic parts: the kiddushin and nisuin. For the kiddushin, the rabbi recites a blessing over wine and a blessing concerning forbidden and permitted relationships. Then Chaya and Moishy sip from the wine cup. Next, Moishy places the ring on Chaya’s finger and says, “Be sanctified (mekudeshes)
to me with this ring in accordance with the law of Moses and Israel.” The couple is now officially married! Interestingly, a ring is not required for a Jewish wedding. Rather, the chosson must give the kallah an object worth more than one peruta, a small unit of value. However, the custom is to use a ring. After the kiddushin is completed, the kesubah (marriage contract) is read aloud in the Aramaic text. The contract is then signed by two witnesses. The kesubah is Chaya’s property and she must have easy access to it throughout the marriage. For the nisuin, chosen guests are called upon to recite sheva brachos (seven blessings) under the chuppah. A second cup of wine is drunk. Finally, Moishy smashes a glass with his right foot to show that even at this jubilant time, we still mourn the Beis Hamikdash. Mazel tov! The chuppah is over, the music strikes up, hugs and kisses and good wishes to all the family!
Yichud
Chaya and Moishy retire briefly to a completely private room, cheder yichud, and are left alone for the first time. This symbolizes the husband bringing his wife into his home. After Yichud comes a festive meal, followed by another round of the sheva brachos. Exuberant music and dancing traditionally accompany the ceremony, reception and dinner banquet. Chassidishe weddings have a Mitzva Tanz. This dancing and singing with a gartel (belt) ends in the wee hours of the morning.
Sheva Brochos
For seven consecutive evenings following the wedding, friends or relatives host festive meals in Chaya and Moishy’s honor. This mirrors the “seven-day celebration” after Yaakov Avinu married Leah Imeinu. It is now the end of formal marriage celebrations, but for the new couple, Chaya and Moishy, it is only the beginning of the rest of their lives together. May you all merit to build a bayis ne’eman b’yisroel!

MARRIAGE LICENSE
How to Become Officially Married
T
By Batya Shevach
he long-awaited wedding day is drawing closer and the excitement is mounting. The hall has been booked, the best photographer in town has been hired and the beautiful bridal gown is secreted in the closet. All practical errands and arrangements seem to have been taken care of. Everything seems to be under control b”H! The Torah states in Bereishit, 2:24, “Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” In order for this marriage to be considered legally kosher and halachically binding, there is still one crucial element that must be taken care of. Before the marriage ceremony can take place, where an ordained rabbi marries the chosson and kallah in the presence of two kosher witnesses, a special marriage file must be opened at the local Rabbinate. For your convenience, we have detailed below exactly how this procedure must be done.
How to open a tik nisuin (marriage file) at a Rabbinate (local religious council) 1. Get started on the process anywhere between 45 and 90 days before the wedding, to allow enough time for any unexpected problems. 2. Prepare copies and originals (when possible) of the following documents for both the bride and groom: a. Israeli ID card or valid foreign passport for non-citizens. b. Three identical passport photos each. c. Birth certificates d. For non-citizens: Proof of Judaism and proof that you are not married to anyone else. This can be a letter from an ordained rabbi stating you are Jewish and were born to a Jewish mother, and that you are single. e. For converts: Official conversion papers, and a letter from an ordained rabbi if 22 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
you converted abroad. f. The ketubas of both spouses’ parents. g. For divorcees: Get and/or divorce certificates. h. For widows/widowers: Death certificate of former spouse. i. Copy of the kashrut certificate for the wedding hall where the wedding will take place. Israeli citizens will also need to prove they are single by sending two kosher witnesses (men over age 18) to their local religious council to testify in person, and then bring the teudat ravakut certificate to the Rabbinate where they intend to apply for a marriage license. Immediate relatives of the bride or groom cannot serve as witnesses. The bride will need to attend classes about the family purity laws and immerse in a mikva before the wedding, and give the officiating rabbi at the wedding a document signed by the mikva attendant. Within three days after the wedding, the couple must bring their ketubah to the Rabbinate where they registered their marriage, and about two weeks later they will receive their official marriage certificate. Keep in mind that both the chosson and kallah must appear together to register for their marriage, but only one spouse needs to go to deliver the ketubah and then pick up the marriage certificate. From the Rabbinate it’s on to the Minis-
try of Interior to register as a married couple on your identity cards. You must bring both of your identity cards, your Israeli passports or teudat maavar, your marriage certificate, and two identical passport pictures if you plan on changing your last name. You will receive an updated insert with your married status indicated, or a totally new ID card if you change your last name, and a stamp in your Israeli passport indicating the name change. Many chareidi couples in Israel prefer to marry through a Badatz Rabbinate (Beit Din Tzedek), either because they want a rabbi from within their own circles to oversee the process rather than a rabbi they don’t know from the Rabbinate, or they seek a more personable approach than the bureaucratic atmosphere at many local religious councils. The different Badatz courts may have slightly different rules than the Rabbinate, but every marriage certificate issued by a Badatz rabbi must receive final approval from the Rabbinate and then their marriage certificates are acceptable in the Ministry of Interior. The whole process can cost anywhere between 600 and 800 shekels, depending on where you decide to apply. Lastly, hatzlacha rabbah with all the preparations and a huge mazel tov! May you build a bayis ne’eman b’yisrael! Please call your local Rabbinate office to confirm the above details before going.
9
For the past few months your focus was on the chosson-kallah and his or her needs. How did it affect your other children? How can this awareness help you during the week of the wedding?
Points to Ponder
1
As the mother of the chosson or kallah, how would you like to express your feelings to your child (i.e. letter, conversation)? When would be a good time for it?
2 3
What are the challenging parts of this upcoming event for you?
What are your three strongest positive character traits? How will they come to use at the wedding?
4 5 6
Mention a unique quality you have noticed in your future son-in-law or daughter-in-law.
What do you find challenging in dealing with your mechutanim? How can you avoid conflict?
What do you like the most about your mechutanim? How can you benefit from that during the wedding and week of sheva brachot?
7
Are there any guests with a strained or sensitive relationship that will attend the wedding? What tools or resources can you use to empower yourself for this situation? What has worked in the past?
8
How would you like to express your gratitude towards guests that have come from far?
10
Which of your husband’s strong qualities can help you at the simcha? What would you like from him pre-simcha and at the simcha?
11
Practically speaking there will be a mechitsa separating you for most hours of the simcha. When/how will you chose your moments of connection with your spouse?
12
Can you remember a moment that touched you greatly at a wedding you attended? What / how can you channel this moment at your personal simcha?
13
A wedding has its overwhelming moments… which one of your family members or friends can refocus you with a few words?
14
The moments of the chuppah are the peak of the wedding–the shechina is right there, the kedusha is palpable.
15
If possible, write a small list highlighting what/who you want to daven for? You will thereby uplift these moments as everlasting ones… overcome by emotion it might not happen on its own.
16
There is so much to daven and ask for, in order to thank Hashem for His kindness. Make a list of 5-10 things you are especially grateful for at this specific simcha.
17 18
How can you fill the gap of your child leaving your home? What are you gaining from marrying off your child?
After the wedding: Your young couple is building a bayis ne’eman of their own! Some will share more and come more often, while others will spend more time on their own. Processing the new relationship may leave you and your family with a torrent of thoughts, sensations and emotions–be ready to accept it all. The couple is building their home on your foundations, another link in the chain of generations!!! Lists provided by Rachel Schreiber Walking You to Your Simcha 053-315-0982

EVENT PLANNING
Enjoy a Smoothly-Run Simcha By Rabbi Tully Bryks
T
here are many factors that help determine the success of an event. But perhaps the most critical decision, and one that can affect all the other factors, is whether to use an event planner. It’s important to acknowledge why some ba’alei simcha choose not to. For one thing, there’s a real need to keep costs down. Unfortunately, the joy and nachas of having reached a new milestone often involves heartache when costs become prohibitive, which can be exacerbated further by unexpected cost overruns. In addition, there’s the question of control. Everyone has their own unique vision as to how they would like their simcha to be. Involving an event planner would seem to be a way to risk an event that does not match the quality that the ba’al simcha was hoping for. Finally, there is the concern of having to micromanage the event planner and not be able to really enjoy the simcha. Ironically, it is precisely due to these very concerns that an event planner could be the perfect choice for most occasions! Let’s first examine the questions of cost and time-effectiveness. Depending on the nature of the event, you may need to contact many different types of services and vendors. And for each type of vendor, you want to find the right quality, which often involves lots of research. Then you need to get price quotes from at least three different comparable vendors to try to get the best price. The problem with this process is that, aside from being quite time consuming, you may end up paying more than you need to and the quality of service may be lacking. And can you ever really be certain that you’re not being cheated? When you use experienced event planners, they know the industry inside and out. So they can quickly identify the best quality vendors within

your price range. And, since an experienced event planner already has a relationship with many vendors, the vendors will often give them better pricing. In addition, the vendor knows that if something goes wrong at an affair with an event planner, they can lose many future clients. Therefore, they will often go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that they meet or beat your expectations. In fact, the costs saved when using an event planner can often outweigh the actual cost of the planner. Amazingly, many people end up paying less overall for a higher quality event!
throughout the event, making sure everything runs smoothly. Veteran event planning company, Simcha Success, has many amazing stories of how they managed to help their clients deal with unexpected challenges. For example, when the kallah’s shoe suddenly fell apart or the chosson’s kittel was forgotten, last-minute replacements were found. At the outset of a wedding in the heat of the summer, the power suddenly went out. So while the hosts where busy welcoming guests, the dedicated staff at Simcha Success were on the phone to the electric company and the municipality. They also arranged for an outside to bring in portable air When you use experienced event company conditioners with generators. FLOWER POWER
Beautiful Wedding Blooms Without Breaking the Bank Along with the dress and food, flowers are one of the most important elements of beautiful wedding. While there are no hard and fast figures about how much wedding flowers should cost, research suggests the flower budget should amount to around eight percent of the overall wedding costs.
T
By Shana Fein
he final cost depends on your budget, vision and creativity. A Jewish wedding has some extras that could bump up the flower budget. Flowers are often used in the bedeken area—think of a bride sitting on a throne of flowers—and of course at the chuppah, which can be anything from a few simple blooms down the aisle to a veritable bower of flowers. Then there’s the yichud room, which even though the bride and groom will only have eyes for each other, should be beautifully decorated. And, don’t forget the reception area, centerpieces and dance floor. While you can spend a fortune on flowers, there are plenty of ways to keep the cost down, without compromising on the wow factor. KEEP IT SEASONAL The easiest way to keep down the cost is to use whatever flowers and plants are available for the time of year. Seasonal blooms will be in abundance and far cheaper than out-of-season blossoms. STAY LOCAL Keeping your flower choices local can also save money. Using local flowers should also keep them fresher than anything that has to be flown in from abroad. This will help them maintain their just-picked appearance through the whole wedding, so there’s less chance of wilting flowers when it comes to formal photo time. If for you nothing but exotic blooms will do, make sure you book a florist well in advance so there is plenty of time to source any flowers that have to be air freighted. LESS IS MORE Keeping the flower selection for everything from the bouquets to the bou26 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
tonnieres to just a few key blooms will help to keep costs under control. No matter if you have many different varieties or stick to just one or two key choices, opt for unscented blooms. The last thing you want is for any of your guests to have allergy attacks from heavily scented flowers. THINK BIG When it comes to wedding flowers, it often pays to think big. Statement flowers might cost more per stem than more common blooms, but since you need fewer of them to create a sensational look, it might work out cheaper than opting for a lot of lower-priced flowers. GO GREEN Use a lot of greenery to keep costs down. Foliage is cheap compared to flowers and choosing geometric or statement filler can bulk out simpler bouquets into an eye-catching arrangement that looks much more expensive than it really is. KEEP IT EASY The more work involved in prepping the flower, the greater the cost. If a flower needs wiring or taping to get it to sit in a bouquet, it might be worthwhile looking for an alternative that doesn’t need quite as much work. Stick with easy-to-manipulate blooms for maximum effect with minimum fuss. CHOOSE HARDY FLOWERS Opt for more robust blossoms, especially if you are getting married in the summer when the sun and heat plays havoc with cut flowers. From pre-ceremony photos to photos at the reception and beyond, you want to make sure your flowers stay perfect from beginning to end. Shy away from flowers that need plenty of TLC to keep them happy and opt for those
that can take the roughhousing they’ll go through as you enjoy your perfect day. THINK OUT OF THE BOX Giant centerpieces might seem like a great idea, but they have to have function as well as form. Make sure your guests can all easily see each other, without having their view blocked by an oversized arrangement. Think minimal for maximum effect—water bowls filled with floating flowers or candles add a gorgeous effect, while allowing your guests to enjoy the event. If you are willing to take a risk, you can also fill the arrangements with offbeat items, such as vegetables or feathers to create a still life that will be a talking point (while letting your guests talk to each other). RENT, DON’T BUY Find out what extras and accessories you can get for free or for a nominal price. The venue may have candelabras it can lend out, cutting down on the need for a floral centerpiece. Don’t forget to talk to your florist about renting bowls or vases rather than buying everything. You might also be able to rent large tropical plants that can fill spaces and add a dramatic touch for a low cost. DOUBLE DOWN Make sure you get full value from your flowers by reusing them in multiple locations throughout the day or night. Depending on the layout of the hall, flower arrangements can do double (or even triple) duty in different areas. Once the wedding is over, consider spreading the joy, and getting full value, from the wedding by donating the bouquets and arrangements to a local hospital or nursing home.

ACHUZAT WAGSHAL WHERE SUPERB TASTE, HIGH-END DESIGN, PRESTIGE AND THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF KASHRUT MEET

ntil recently, a quiet stroll along Meltzer Street in Bnei Brak, or any of the surrounding streets, was impossible due to the vibrant simcha venue nestled between the buildings. Acoustics, as it turns out, is one of the most important components of a simcha hall, both for the guests celebrating within and for the surrounding neighborhood. Since the renovation of Achuzat Wagshal, bands and orchestras can safely turn up the volume and neighbors can finally get a good night’s sleep. Acoustic engineers were instructed to minimize noise for the surrounding neighborhood, improve the acoustics in each hall to prevent the penetration of sound from one hall to another, and enhance the sound so that it is heard uniformly throughout each hall. Several months have passed since the opening of the newly renovated Achuzat Wagshal, and CEO R’ Eli Haskel is still elated from clients’ and guests’ overwhelmingly positive feedback. Immense resources were invested in the extensive renovation of the event halls, which positioned Achuzat Wagshal as a unique and pioneering simcha venue whose philosophy is to ensure affordability for any pocket. In contrast to most simcha venues which are located in industrial areas or a remote corner of the city, Achuzat Wagshal is uniquely and centrally located in the heart of Bnei Brak, which facilitates easy access. “The fact that we’re located on Harav Meltzer Street and not in the bustling areas that halls usually occupy, means that clients and guests don’t have to weave their way through traffic or struggle to find the address,” says R’ Eli. “However, despite our reputation as one of the most prestigious halls in the city, we still tailor our prices to suit every pocket because we understand what a central element the price of the simcha hall constitutes for clients.” All stops were pulled out when it came to design, with words like opulent and palatial 36 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
best fitting the venue’s new description. “The main halls were fully gutted, pillars removed and high acoustic ceiling installed, with design elements that include a dry-wall drop ceiling with spot lights and wood embellishments. The main halls can accommodate up to a thousand guests around tables with room to spare.” The smaller halls were also partially renovated, particularly with affordability for clients in mind. “These halls are suitable for weddings of up to 450 guests and for smaller simchas such as a brit, bar mitzvah, engagement or shabbat chatan. They of course offer the same gourmet dishes, service standards and superb kashrut certification as the main halls, but at a lower price,” adds R’ Eli.
sitions in hotels, restaurants and corporate events. Achuzat Wagshal is the only hall in Bnei Brak that itself holds a kashrut certificate of the Badatz HaEida HaChareidit, and not through an outsourced catering provider.” Another component of the new Achuzat Wagshal that puts the venue light years ahead of its counterparts in Bnei Brak is the accommodation it offers clients. “We built three luxurious family suites, designed for parents-in-law and the young couple to enjoy on the happiest day of their lives, with our goal being to make the whole event easier for them,” says R’ Eli. “Often, someone from the wedding party is coming from far, and we offer them the option to stay right at the wedding venue making it easier to prepare close to the main event.” The suites are available for the event itself and, whether local or from abroad, “Despite our reputation as guests can even stay for an extra one of the most prestigious night or two. “From our experience on the ground over just the last few halls in the city, we still tailor months, these suites are in high deour prices to suit every pocket.” mand, which shows that they’re a necessary and welcome service.” R’ Eli Haskel R’ Eli also emphasizes the rare CEO personal treatment that every client receives from the management of Achuzat Wagshal invested nearly 15 million Achuzat Wagshal from the moment they conNIS in the renovations and upgrades, and used firm their event reservation and throughout the services of the best architects and profes- the entire planning period up to the event. sionals in the field, headed by architect Rachel “People want a top-tier hall and were asZliwicz, who also designed the new maternity tounded by the results of the renovation. ward at Maayanei HaYeshua Medical Center, But cost is still a determining factor and they and managed by Shmulik Rotenberg, who has demand that we keep Achuzat Wagshal withmany large projects under his belt specifically in most of the population’s financial reach,” in the field of event venues. “The results are affirms R’ Eli just before he leaves to greet breathtaking,” says R. Hometown Wedding By Batya Shevach
B
eitar Illit is home to illustrious Torah scholars, thousands of kollel students, and many men and women who work and study in Beit Shemesh and Jerusalem. With a population of just over 50,000, Beitar is no longer the little “settlement town” it was when the first brave families moved in seventeen years ago. As a predominantly chareidi city, the birth rate is one of the highest in the country. At last count, 63% of the residents of Beitar Illit were under the age of 18. That means thousands of weddings on the horizon, as the children born in Beitar grow up and marry. Beitar has no shortage of makeup artists and sheital machers, and caterers to provide food for an aufruf or Shabbat Chattan. But until recently, the weddings themselves took place “out of town”. While it isn’t uncommon for Israeli couples to choose a wedding hall near the center of Israel to accommodate guests arriving from afar, or in Jerusalem if only for the holy atmosphere, it is often so much simpler to get married in your hometown. Friends and neighbors who don’t own cars can get to the wedding hall without traveling for hours on buses or trains, and the parents and siblings of the bride or groom arrive fresh and energetic to the hall when it’s just a short distance from their home. Elchanan Erental, a longtime resident of Beitar, realized that almost every night at least one child from Beitar gets married. He was distressed by the fact that every single family has to contend with long trips and traffic on a day when peace of mind is of top priority. Determined that something had to be done to rectify the inconvenience suffered by every single family in Beitar, Erental opened a local wedding venue with two different halls, so that two events can take place simultaneously. While Erental acknowledges that the chareidi community has traditionally held weddings in Bnei Brak and Jerusalem, he also believes that there is a general willingness
40 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
to forgo tradition in favor of comfort and convenience. “Jerusalem is indeed a central location–for the inhabitants of Jerusalem. But the residents of Beitar—even the former Jerusalemite—have already, thank G-d, found new friends and acquaintances in our community. They no longer need to rely on their connections out of the city and they deserve a wedding hall of their own, and Heichalei Beitar serves to fulfill this need. Residents of Jerusalem who are invited to a wedding in Beitar can avail themselves of the excellent public transport service, as well as guests from Modi’in Illit and Beit Shemesh.” Heichalei Beitar is a two-story building, with seating for 500 guests in each of the halls. Erental took great pains to plan the layouts of the halls with the needs of the guests in mind. “The hall was deliberately
planned to accommodate ample seating adjacent to the dance floors,” he explains. “Furthermore, careful consideration was given to ensure that the large flow of guests entering and exiting the hall would move easily, alongside the waiters and hall staff.” Erental also gave special attention to choosing the halls’ interior design. The entrance alone is very impressive, and meticulous planning has gone into the courtyards, possible locations for the chuppah, the corridors, the auxiliary rooms, the hand washing sinks and the restrooms. Everything has been constructed with beautiful and luxurious accessories, adhering to state-of-the-art
standards. Even the acoustics were considered when choosing building materials for the halls. The most important aspect of a wedding, after the chuppah and the music, is the food, and skeptics might wonder how a fledgling Beitar hall can compete with the established venues in the big cities. To allay those very fears, Heichalei Beitar has formed a partnership with the renowned catering company, Maadanei Melech. The caterer, with a reputation of preparing dishes truly ‘fit for kings’, will provide food for all of the events held in the hall. Regarding Maadanei Melech, Erental states, “Residents of Beitar are already familiar with their service, and they appreciate the value and significance of our association with them.” Elchanan Erental can be proud of what he has accomplished. The bulk of the construction is behind him, and all that’s left is the finishing touches. The ceiling, plaster designs, lighting and scenery are still in the makings. And the tables, chairs, kallah chair, and bar are yet to be installed. However, once word got out that a wedding hall would finally be opening in Beitar, Erental was swamped with calls and both halls are already nearly fully booked through Rosh Hashana. Erental is both surprised and happy that the hall’s business is booming before it has even opened. “The professional caterers, the perfect environment, the new and modern décor all combine to create an amazing wedding hall. Furthermore, the hall is strategically located between Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh, which also contributed to many of the bookings.” Erental modestly takes little credit for what he has accomplished. When asked what he believes makes an event successful, he says, “Divine Providence. This is the recipe for a successful event! We give a blessing for everyone to enjoy weddings with the help of Hashem.” For more information or to book an event call 02-502-1633.

WHY CHOOSE A
Banquet Garden
FOR YOUR EVENT VENUE?
B
anquet gardens, or “ganei eiru’im” in Hebrew, are a popular type of venue for special events in Israel. Why do so many Israelis choose them over hotels or event halls?
Natural Beauty—with All the Conveniences Banquet gardens offer all the natural beauty of an outdoor event without any of the headaches of trying to arrange it in your own backyard. No need to arrange catering, figure out a comfortable place to put the guests, or worry about favorable weather conditions—the banquet garden has all that covered. Most banquet gardens offer in-house catering, with high-quality, gourmet dishes akin to any large indoor hall. The food can be served to the table or buffet style, as per the host’s preferences. Many banquet gardens also offer a range of options for kashrut certification.
The Fresh Air As soon as you walk into one of these venues and take a deep breath, you understand
why so many Israelis choose to create their special memories in banquet gardens. Nothing brings more joy and tranquility than the colors and scents of the flowers, grass, and trees of an outdoor garden.
The Open Spaces Even a large hotel or event hall can’t hold a candle to the spaciousness offered by a banquet garden. Many gardens have separate spaces for the various stages of the event, including a reception area, a pre-built chuppah, and a covered, airconditioned space for seating and dancing. This allows guests to move around freely and avoid feeling crowded or cramped.
The Flexibility & Large Capacity The wide open spaces of a banquet garden make it an ideal choice for very large events, especially during the summer; but they are a wonderful setting for smaller, more intimate events as well. During the winter, events are generally held in a covered area that can be closed off for climate control, giving guests a comfortable space to dance and enjoy their meal any time of year.
The Beautiful Photos Any photographer can tell you that the best pictures are taken outside, in the gentle, natural light of late afternoon. This type of lighting brightens your best features, softens harsh lines, and gives your skin a natural glow. The greenery of an outdoor garden also gives a magnificent and colorful background.
A Chuppah Under the Stars In the Ashkenazi world, Jewish weddings have traditionally taken place under the stars. This symbolizes a hope and prayer that the couple will receive the blessing of Avraham Avinu, “And I will multiply your descendants like the stars of the sky” (Bereishit 26:4). Most banquet gardens have a beautifully decorated chuppah built on a raised platform, offering guests a good view of the ceremony. If you want to create your most joyful memories in a place with stunning natural beauty, fresh air, open spaces, and delicious food—without needing to worry about logistics or the comfort of your guests—a banquet garden is a perfect choice.
Betzela Hahar is one such banquet garden, located in the quiet moshav of Machasiya, just outside Beit Shemesh. Shaded by olive and eucalyptus trees by day, and gorgeously lit by night, the beautiful rural setting radiates its enchantment as soon as you walk in. Event capacity ranges from 300 – 1,000 people in the summer and 300 – 600 in the winter. From the exclusively rich menu to the magical table arrangements and professional staff, prepare to dance, eat, and enjoy the night away.

Interview IRIS COHEN OF ANTAKA CATERING
Gourmet Masterpieces to Please any Palate By Daniella Levy
A
ntaka Catering is a gourmet, kosher caterer founded by Itzik and Iris Cohen, a chef and event manager respectively. Combining their skills and expertise, they can create the event of a lifetime, with delicious food and magnificent table design adapted to a wide variety of unique locations. Their clientele has included Jewish communities and distinguished businessmen from all over the world. We met with Iris and learned what to expect when booking catering for an event. What is the standard price range per guest for catering? Prices usually range between 160 NIS and 500 NIS per guest. Another, more economical option is to order the food only, without service or serving utensils, and prices usually start at around 50 NIS per guest for meat catering. Dishes that include more expensive ingredients will cost more. What if more guests show up than were expected? The catering company is obligated to prepare a 10% backup of food, service, and utensils. If you cross the 10% backup, it can create an uncomfortable situation for guests who must wait for a table to be set for them. This would certainly detract from the level of service. What should be served at the reception? It depends on the type of service for the main meal. If you plan to serve the main meal buffet-style, we recommend small hors d’oeuvres served on trays. If the main meal is served to the table, we recommend hors d’oeuvres stations at the reception, with a diverse range of choices. For example, one station for sliced meat with sauces; another with fish (I recommend ceviche—it’s a real hit!); another with a baked item, like a stone oven with focaccia; and another with ready-to-serve dishes that don’t need to be prepared in front of the guests, to prevent crowding. 50 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
How do you ensure that the food is fresh? The food should always be cooked on the day of the event. We achieve this by using large kitchens divided into sections, and appointing a chef who is responsible for a particular section of the menu. The main chef then puts everything together and adds the finishing touches. What are the service options? The most common and fashionable option is table service, where each guest is served a plate that includes the entrée and the sides. The advantages include the beautiful presentation and the personal attention from the waiter. Another fashionable option is buffet-style. One advantage is the wide range of options, since all the entrées and sides are displayed at once, and the guest can choose whatever he likes. It also leaves more time for dancing and more flexibility, since guests don’t have to be sitting at the table all at once. Another option is to place platters with all the entrées, sides, and salads on each table. This is the most economical, but least aesthetic option. Would you recommend that someone with a limited budget focus on higher quality food, or on a wider range of options?
I prefer to invest in fine quality ingredients rather than a wide variety of dishes. Abundant options that look appetizing are often disappointing because they're made of inferior produce and fail the taste test. Itzik Cohen
Antaka Catering chef
Based on many years of professional experience, I prefer to invest in fine quality ingredients rather than a wide variety of dishes. Abundant options that look appetizing are often disappointing because they're made of inferior produce and fail the taste test. Is it possible to skip the first course? It’s possible, but guests are accustomed to a certain standard order for the meal. If you plan to skip the first course, I recommend printing a menu to place at the center of the table so guests know what to expect. How else is it possible to cut expenses? The most expensive component of the meal is beef, so you could leave that out. The level of service also affects the price. Fewer waiters mean lower prices — but it can also mean impatient and frustrated guests, so avoid understaffing. Is it a standard practice to invite families to come to tastings? Absolutely, and it’s important to decide on the dishes and service according to the varied tastes of the family members. In my experience, the tasting creates an opportunity to ensure that the hosts are happy with the service. How can hosts avoid disruption by the event manager during the event? Before the event, designate a family member who will be the “contact person” for the event manager, who he can consult about timing, setting reserve tables, etc. What do you recommend asking a catering company before closing the deal? 1. Do you have a license from the Ministry of Health? When the catering company is bringing food from on off-premises kitchen, they must have a license from the Ministry of Health to serve food away from the place where it was cooked. 2. Do you have insurance to cater large events? 3. Can I get the contact information for some previous customers? It’s a good idea to get recommendations from people who have used the service in the past.

Sweet Dreams Do Come True HOW TO CHOOSE A WEDDING CAKE By: Haviva Mor of Sugarela Cake Design
In recent years, more and more couples choose to order a custom wedding cake in addition to the standard desserts offered by caterers. Custom-designed multi-layer cakes displaying bride-and-groom figurines or floral fondant decorations are no longer rare at Israeli weddings.
I
n Europe and the USA, wedding cakes are a long-standing tradition and you won’t attend a wedding that doesn’t feature one. They say that the first slice of cake symbolizes the sweetness of the couple’s first taste of life together. For this reason, at the end of the wedding banquet, many couples hold a cake-cutting ceremony where they cut the cake together and give each other a taste of the first piece. Almost every couple wants their cake to be special, delicious and, most importantly, unique. The wedding cake is more than just a dessert; it is an edible work of art that adds interest and elegance to the entire event. Many brides dream of a perfect cake that will make their wedding unforgettable. But when the time comes to choose one, the variety and range of options can make it very difficult to decide. We have collected a few tips to help you choose the perfect cake:
Order Early
l Start researching cake designers as early as possible. The best and most in-demand designers are booked early, and it’s best to get your order placed a month or even a few months ahead of time. A wedding cake is a complex, multi-stage project that requires a great deal of planning, time, and effort. Planning ahead and ordering as early as you can will ensure that the designer you want will be available on the date you need and will have the time to plan and design the cake according to your wishes.
Reliability & Professionalism
l Most cake designers have a website or Facebook page showcasing their work, where you can get a feel for their skill, professionalism, and experience. Don’t order a cake based only on words and promises—rely on photographs and 64 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
recommendations from other websites. Make sure the style and quality of the designer’s work in the photographs is right for you and meets your expectations. Find out if the designer offers meetings with potential customers, where you can sample cakes, consult on the design, and get to know the person who will create the cake of your dreams.
Word of Mouth
l Recommendations from friends and former clients are the most reliable way to find the best cake studio. If you saw and tasted a great cake at a wedding or another event, don’t hesitate to ask the hosts where they got it. They will gladly recommend the designer if they were happy with the cake and the service.
Kashrut
l Most event halls and gardens in Israel serve meals that are under kosher supervision. Any cake brought in from elsewhere will need kashrut certification that matches that of the hall (pareve, regular or mehadrin, etc.). Most event halls request a pareve kashrut certificate, and there’s no need to worry—these days, it’s possible to bake amazing pareve cakes from the best ingredients: Belgian chocolate, non dairy cream, natural fruit purées, and more—no need for industrial ingredients or margarine. Make sure the certificate is valid, and that you’ll be able to show it to the venue’s kosher supervisor before you order the cake.
Budget
l Be open with your designer about your budget. The cost of a wedding cake varies according to size, number of layers, and complexity of design. Note that wedding cakes involve the additional costs of delivery and assembly at the hall. Be realistic and choose a cake
you can pay for. There’s no point in planning a six-tiered cake with cascading flowers if your budget won’t allow it.
Come with a Plan
l Wedding cakes don’t have to be round and white! You can choose a variety of options, colors, and designs. You can match the cake to your color scheme or bridal gown; add your favorite flowers; choose bride and groom figurines to place on top; request sculptures that represent your professions, hobbies, or treasured items; design a cake that matches your invitations, etc. To ensure that your cake will be beautiful and unique, decide ahead of time what elements are most important to you. Search for ideas and photographs of items you want to appear on the cake. This way, your cake will reflect your personalities and styles.
Be Organized and Efficient
l If you plan to have a cake-cutting ceremony, make sure to schedule it into the evening. It would be a shame for the ceremony to be forgotten or postponed until the end of the event when only the last of the family members are still present, and for the rest of the guests to be unable to enjoy the cake in which you invested so much. It’s best to hold the ceremony relatively early on in the evening, immediately after the entrées. That way, it can be sliced and served right after the meal.
Save Some Cake for You!
l Ask a friend or family member to save a piece for you. Brides and grooms are usually busy during the event and often don’t get to taste the cake. This is your special event that you will always remember; you should enjoy every “bite”! Mazal tov and enjoy! www.sugarela.com

GETTING THE PERFECT SHOT
TeknoArt Photography Dream Team By Batya Shevach
W
hen the last guests have gone and the chosson and kallah leave with their gifts, all we have left of the wedding are the memories; a gift from Hashem. But memories can lose their luster over time, and the best way to keep them alive is to have something timeless and tangible to represent them. Ariel Ravinsky established TeknoArt Ltd, a photography dream team that preserves those memories. His team comprises a group of hand-picked photographers, lighting assistants and a design department. TeknoArt integrates high-end photographic equipment with superb photography skills and constant innovation. Their work takes them around Israel and across the world and they produce their albums at top-of-the-line print laboratories in Israel. We enjoyed discussing wedding photography with Ariel Ravinsky, CEO and founder of TeknoArt. Everyone has cameras on their phones now and anyone with a good camera can take pictures. So why do I need to hire a professional photographer? In the past, when photography involved using film, there was no room for mistakes. A photographer’s technical skills were paramount to his success. Cameras today are extremely sophisticated, but they are only our tools. If you bought a shiny trumpet that wouldn’t mean you could play jazz. Photographers have it easier today in terms of technical issues, and so are evaluated based mostly upon the artistic qualities of their work. My modern “trumpet” knows how to play notes by itself. But it’s the photographer who determines whether the “music” sounds pleasant. Today there are a lot of ways to design your own album. Why can’t I just take my photos from the wedding and make an album myself? When people try to do things on their own, irreversible mistakes can occur. Working with a studio ensures that every step of the process is completed with care and expertise,
72 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
while still giving the client the opportunity to make style and design choices. All photos in the album we produce are retouched, and undergo advanced digital processing. There are so many event photographers out there. Where do we start? What should we look for when we choose a photographer? You should be impressed by a photographer’s portfolio, and relate to the photography style. No less important than photography skills are the photographer’s or the business’s
reliability and reputation. One of our advantages at TeknoArt is that we have a group of nine superb photographers, and a client can choose the photographer he best relates to with regard to style and personality. How far in advance should we book a photographer? I recommend asking the hall for several different open dates, and then checking when the desired vendors (photographer, band, hairdresser, etc.) are available. That way the couple doesn’t have to forgo what they really want. Do photographers specialize in specific sectors of the population and should I look for someone from mine? Sure. It’s important for a photographer to be very familiar and experienced with your type of event, and to understand all the nuances of every sector of the population he works with. How many hours do we need to have a
photographer at our event? An average event lasts for five hours. Add to that a photo session of about two hours outside the hall before the event, and another hour and a half for shooting pictures of the families. We suggest to the chosson and kallah a photo session at night after the event, when everyone is a little more relaxed. Those last photos greatly enrich the album, as well as the couple’s memories of such a special night. How can photographers balance their role of capturing every moment but not getting in the way or making the hosts feel they’re intruding on private moments? A photographer must be sensitive enough to know where and when he can get close and when he needs to take a step back. The sophisticated equipment used today enables a photographer to capture feelings at the right moment, even from a distance. Who are your clients? We have a large variety of clients from the whole spectrum of the religious population in Israel, as well as in Europe, the Ukraine, and the United States. What is preferable – to hire an independent photographer or to work with a big studio? With teams from large studios like TeknoArt, the photographers have known each other for years, are experienced at working together, and coordinate their schedules. An independent photographer has to assemble a makeshift team for any specific evening, and the success of the team is not guaranteed. With very large events, or when extremely important guests have been invited, it’s best to have two or more teams working together. It is important to make sure the photography teams coordinate what they will each be doing, and are experienced at working together. What is the secret to creating an excellent album with great photographs? All you need is cooperation, sticking to a set schedule, and a good atmosphere. From there on, the sky’s the limit.
EXPERIENCE PHOTOGRAPHY AT A WHOLE NEW LEVEL TeknoArt is an elite photography team comprised of 9 leading photographers with international experience. Our English-speaking staff is ready to turn your event into a lifetime of memories.
Let TeknoArt tell the story of your wedding. The best pictures from your event will go through advanced digital processing and design, leaving you with an elegant album to cherish for years to come.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT
Wedding Videography That Tells a Story Yoni Zur is a videographer specializing in religious and charedi weddings. Boasting 15 years of experience, he has filmed weddings throughout Israel and even in Switzerland, Belgium, and France. We were fortunate to be able to speak with Yoni and he shared some tips and insights about the trade.

ow far in advance should a couple book a wedding videographer and photographer? As soon as they can. In general, the most convenient days are taken quickly. Especially in the charedi circles, people usually prefer to hold events between Mondays and Wednesdays because Thursday and Sunday are too close to Shabbat. Also, the well-known photographers and videographers are booked very fast. I am very busy, so I suggest people call to book right when they have a wedding date. There are people who plan the wedding date based on my availability! What’s important to know before choosing a videographer? First, make sure you see their work and get a sense of who you’re working with. Sometimes you’ll get a recommendation but that videographer’s style won’t speak to you. Second, it’s important to make sure that the videographer is familiar with the particular sensitivities of the family. For example, it’s not always suitable to place the groom’s brother next to the bride. Not everyone knows this. Generally, a good, well-known videographer will be able to tell you what kinds of people he’s worked with, and you can get a sense that he knows what to do to avoid awkward situations. What are the advantages of working with a photographer and videographer separately? When you hire a photographer and a videographer separately, you can ensure
74 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
that each of them is an expert in their own specific field. If you hire a professional videographer who brings along photographers, you don’t know who he’s bringing or how good they are at their jobs. My specialty is video. I have a whole studio just for video, with other professional videographers and a whole editing crew. We take the time to make sure that every video captures the feel and the atmosphere of the wedding. Why is it important to hire an experienced videographer? Weddings are stressful. The bride might be very emotional, and the family is often stressed — especially if it’s one of the first weddings in the family. A videographer with experience knows how to calm everybody down and get everyone smiling and relaxed. A professional will know how
to make the most out of the time they have, even if things are running late. It’s not only about knowing how to video, but knowing how to approach the family and the event. An experienced videographer plays the role of a psychologist: he knows how to facilitate calm and effective communication between himself and the two families. Moreover, weddings can differ greatly from one to the next. Sometimes the hall isn’t full or the dancing isn’t interesting. Some weddings are nice and happy and easy to video but not every wedding is like that, therefore you have to know what to focus on to get a good video. For example, if the father is a politician or a Rosh Yeshiva, the crowd might be so big the videographer will forget there’s a couple getting married! He could end up with a nice video
of a big crowd, but it’ll be missing the point. I see videography as an art of telling a story and make sure the final product reflects the specialness of the day for the young couple. With my expertise, you feel that I’m there, but you don’t notice that I’m there. I give people their space, but confidence that their precious moments are being captured. How do you choose what to include and what to omit from the video? This is what distinguishes a good videographer from a bad one. Anyone can stand there with a video camera and film the whole thing. A good videographer will know what to focus on and what to leave out, taking into account the client’s sensitivities and priorities. It is important to let the photographer and videographer know more or less how many people you want in the family portraits. We have to know the size of the family so that we know when to come. Everything takes time. You should also let us know if the bride is going to want to take photos in different places like outdoors, on a tour, on the kallah chair, etc. We film while all these photos are being taken. It’s nice to see afterwards who was there and how the photoshoot progressed. How do you make sure you are always in just the right place at just the right time, so you don’t miss anything important? If it’s important to you not to miss a single moment, you will want to consider hiring two videographers. Not every event needs two; a single videographer should be able to capture all the important moments, too. It depends on the size of the event and your budget. So you offer the option of hiring a second videographer? We offer the option of two full-time cameras, and an option of one full-time camera, supplemented with an additional parttime camera. We have different packages and combinations so that the price won’t be too high. The second camera is generally for the chuppah and for the dancing, but some request a full-time backup, so the video features shots from both cameras. The main difference is in the end result. It’s important to remember that in the end, after the wedding, the video is what you have left from the whole night. Some photographers offer a photoshoot after the wedding. Do you offer such an option? We do, and although it comes out nice,
I don’t think it is necessary. After the wedding, we video the family getting their portraits taken. We don’t have a time limit. When we’re done, we’re done. Any tips for ensuring a great wedding video? Come as relaxed and as calm as possible. Rest assured that we care about everyone— not only the family that booked us—and we want to capture everyone at the event with no preferences! Don’t look at the camera unless you’re asked to; this helps the video look more natural. Sometimes I just film what’s happening. Other times I’m asked to give people instructions. It depends on the family and what they want. Can the couple choose the background music for the video? The couple can choose music for the highlight video clip. For the actual video we combine the audio from the event with the music that was played at the wedding. How does the family receive the final video? We provide a disc on key with the video file. You can pass it on to the rest of the family members who want it and download it to wherever you like. And don’t worry if you lose it: I think I’m the only videographer who keeps old videos and materials for 7-8 years. Did you learn your craft through classes or through experience? Both, but mainly experience. Today I teach videography, I create video clips and music videos for artists and musicians, and edit videos for institutions. How can one get an impression of your work? One of the special things we offer is our highlight video clips of around 7-9 minutes. These help viewers get a taste of the entire wedding without watching hours of footage. We are highly experienced in putting together these clips and create them very carefully, so that every time you watch one, you discover something new and interesting. Yoni can be contacted at 052-458-8631 or www.yonizur.co.il.

He earned his degree in photography from Hadassah College in Jerusalem. “Photography is a great passion of mine, and I thank Hashem every day that it is also my career,” he says. Thanks to his many years of experience, he can provide the full range of services for events, from still photos to videography, live webcasts, and even aerial photography. “It’s a one-stop shop,” he explains. “The customer gets an all-inclusive photography and videography package for his event or campaign, and this makes everything so much more convenient for all parties.” He has a great deal of experience with all kinds of private and commercial projects, including events such as bar mitzvahs, weddings, and conventions, as well as media campaigns or promotional videos for businesses. “I adapt my service to my client,” he says. “I don’t tell him ‘This is what I offer’ and that’s it. Instead, I listen to what he wants, and plan my service accordingly.” It is rare to find this combination of expertise in a photographer. Nachshon explains that videography and photography require entirely different skillsets. Videography requires more of a “bird’s eye view,” whereas photography requires a more focused eye to capture key moments and poignant candid shots. “Baruch Hashem, I have the eye for both, and this is apparent in the results with the videos I make as well as the digital albums I produce for clients.” To provide all these services at a single event, Nachshon collaborates with a team of professionals who meet his strict standards. In a recent significant event at Binyanei
78 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
Ha’uma, he employed a large team of photographers and videographers to provide an impressive range of media services, from stills to live video screening to broadcasting the event live to the US. The staff included a director while Nachshon took on the role of producer. “My client was very calm throughout the event, because he knew he was getting the full package from me and didn’t need to bother coordinating with other professionals. After the event, he thanked me sincerely: ‘This would not have been such a successful event without you.’” What does Nachshon recommend looking for in a photographer? Firstly, he advises finding someone you like: someone who is calm, pleasant, and easy to deal with. Large events can be very stressful, and the last thing you need is a photographer who is adding to the stress. You want everyone to look relaxed and happy in the photos, and only a photographer with a pleasant personality can achieve this. The second priority, Nachshon continues, is equipment. Everyone has a smartphone nowadays and often people feel that their tech-savvy cousin or friend can replace the need for a professional photographer. The truth is that the more modern and high-quality the equipment, the better the results.
Beyond the level of the equipment is the training of the photographer. Nachshon recommends looking for someone who learned photography at an academic institution. Academic photography programs offer a broad, comprehensive, and intensive training that can’t be matched by a mere course or two. Lastly, a truly skilled photographer, Nachshon concludes, knows exactly where to be in order to capture all the best moments and be sure he doesn’t miss anything significant. Contrary to common perception, the real work of a photographer only begins after the event has ended. Nachshon invests countless hours of work in the editing process. The process of editing a film requires a great deal of skill and creativity; on the one hand, the film should give the viewers a good sense of the progression of events, and on the other, it must be concise enough to keep viewers interested and engaged. Photos must be edited as well, and digital albums are a work of art in their own right. For this reason Nachshon employs his own graphic artist to focus on photo editing and producing a perfect end result. Nachshon’s biggest pride is seeing his clients displaying the pictures he has taken. Nachshon once went to the home of an old client and was pleased to see his album on their coffee table. “When they told me they take the album out to look at every Shabbat, it really made my day and gave me a deep sense of satisfaction.” Similarly, he enjoys spotting his work on his client’s social media profile pictures. Nachshon also loves meeting people during the most significant moments of their lives—especially when those clients return to have him capture more milestone events. “Twenty years ago, I photographed the wedding of a lovely couple, and this year I had the privilege of photographing their daughter’s wedding!” Nachshon Philipson can be reached at 054-668-0200 and nachshonp@gmail.com.

Never Miss a Beat A scrumptious seudah, leibedik dancing and a view of the Old City–every chosson and kallah’s dream for their wedding. But in Jerusalem, a centuries-old minhag makes the mitzvah of being mesameach chatan v’kallah quite challenging.
T
By Heidi Tapnack
he mitzvah of being mesameach chatan v'kallah is paramount at all weddings. In addition to meat, wine and shtik, simcha is best accomplished through music and dancing. But this mitzvah always comes hand in hand with the minhag of keeping alive the memory of the Beis HaMikdash. In Jerusalem proper, in addition to the usual minhagim of placing ash on a chosson’s head, smashing a glass and reciting “Im Eshkacheich,” Minhag Yerushalayim prohibits instrumental music at weddings. According to this custom, only drums and percussion accessories may be used. Rabbi Auerbach (the Imrei Binah) disseminated this Ashkenazic wedding custom 150 years ago not only to perpetuate the remembrance of churban Beis HaMikdash but also to prevent full rejoicing within the city at whose heart lie the ruins of Har HaBayis. Rabbi Auerbach’s decision was accepted by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld, Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin and later Rabbanim of Jerusalem, and today remains accepted practice by both the Chassidishe and Litvishe Ashkenazic communities. Moti Hecht, experienced wedding entertainer and poiker (drummer in Yiddish), rises to the challenge: “We proudly uphold this special local minhag but still provide musical accompaniment that is unique, leibedik and even groovier than some conventional bands!” The minhag permits the use of drums because unlike most instruments, drums don’t play the melody of a song but rather provide a beat or serve as an accompaniment. “Rav Elyashiv z’tzl explains that since drums are only there to keep the beat and thereby are not considered actual instruments, it is permissible to use as 86 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
many sets of drums as we’d like,” adds Moti. His solo repertoire comprises of one set of drums but he also teams up with a fellow percussionist offering a two-man band. His fellow musician has a unique set of drums and other percussion accessories that enhance the sound and liven up the vibe. Moti is extremely musically talented. His unique understanding of how drums produce sound enables him to produce not only a beat but also “play” the song itself. His drum set includes transparent drums with colored LED lighting that add an innovative and unique visual element to the music. Keeping with the tradition of Minhag Yerushalayim bands, Moti is accompanied by at least two acapella singers (which can be upgraded to five), including a bass vocalist whose ability to mimic the sounds of accompaniment musical instruments adds a unique element to the performance and takes the sound to a different level.
“Harmonizing is the key to achieving the right sound, and the combination of voices in harmony with the beat of a drum have the power to penetrate hearts and open sha’arei shamayim.” Moti is uncompromising when it comes to the quality of vocalists he hires to accompany him. All weddings in the Minhag Yerushalayim tradition include a bass singer accompaniment. In Moti’s experience, bass singers must have a strong background in playing an instrument. Without that, they will not have the proper technique to mimic the sounds of the instrument, and really fill their role as an accompaniment to the rest of the singers. Unlike regular singers, Minhag Yerushalayim music means little rest for the musicians. They can’t rely on background music for a break, have to know how to open songs without the usual instrumental opening, and how to vocally work the playlist so that one song flows smoothly into the next. Moti only works with vocalists who have experience in Minhag Yerushalayim weddings and in whom he can trust to produce the high-quality experience and performance his clients expect and deserve. As he assembles the ensemble for a simcha, Moti knows full well which musicians and singers blend seamlessly with one another. This is a hallmark of his service and is unique amongst other Minhag Yerushalayim bands. Moti is attentive to the requests of each client, and meets ahead of time with the families of the chosson and kallah to ensure he knows exactly what they want. Within the seemingly limited realm of drumming, he offers a vast number of options to personalize the music. Options include determining sound volume for each stage of the event, a Litvishe or Chassidishe pronunciation in songs, and more. “Our goal is to entertain even the most discerning of guests and produce music that could be mistaken for a full band. Sometimes people aren’t even aware that the music is being produced without the aid of musical instruments!” Moti can be reached at 052-717-0004 and motiht@gmail.com.

Saying Yes to the Dress While a wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, finding the perfect dress—at the perfect price—can be stressful. If you can’t find the dress of your dreams, consider having one made to measure. If buying a brand-new dress is not in your budget, consider either borrowing or renting a gown. By Shana Fein
T
here’s something very special about wearing the dress of another happy kallah. Perhaps you are lucky enough to have the dress that your mother or even grandmother wore at her wedding, which could be updated with some clever alterations for a beautiful modern-vintage look. Or, you could ask a friend or relative to borrow their wedding dress with the promise to return it in pristine condition. Many of them would be glad to see their much-loved dress bring happiness to another bride, especially if their dress has sat in a wardrobe for years. However, make sure they are on board with you making alterations to make it fit you. After all, if they’ve kept the dress for so long, it’s likely to have a lot of meaning for them and they might find it hard to let you change it. If you don’t have a go-to friend or relative to borrow from, don’t discount wedding dress gemachim. They offer a wide variety of gowns, some for free or for a nominal donation. Since they are set up for the religious community, the dresses will usually all be fully tznius, so you don’t have to worry about the extra expense of alterations to make a dress modest enough for your requirements. Many gemachim also offer additional items such as shoes, headpieces, veils and accessories, so you can get the complete outfit without having to shop around. If a gemach isn’t for you, but you don’t want to buy a dress, consider renting a dress from one of the increasing number of dressmakers that are cornering the rental market. boutique, there are high-end rental companies that specialize in offering brides their dream dresses at more affordable prices, so you can wear a designer gown at a less-than-designer price. If you decide to rent, make sure you consider all the practicalities. Will you need to clean the gown before you can wear it, or will

If you receive it in the mail, you might need to pay for steaming or pressing before you can wear it, which adds to the cost. Remember, in some bridal salons the selection of modest dresses may be limited, so make sure to check each site or store’s
alteration policy to see what you can and can’t do. Many will allow alterations that do not affect the dress in any way, but this will vary from vendor to vendor, so be sure to read the fine print. Many brides choose to have a specialist dressmaker create a dress just for them. Not only will it be unique, it will also be designed to fit perfectly. However, although it initially seems like a cheaper option than buying, the costs can add up quickly, especially if you opt for an elaborate dress and expensive material such as beading and silk. If you go down this route, make sure the dressmaker can create what you want. Speak to previous clients, ask to see actual dresses to make sure the finish is in line with your expectations and, most importantly, make sure the price is worked out in advance so there are no last minute surprises. If you want a new dress, but don’t have the money for a bespoke gown (and if you are willing to take a gamble) you can order a beautiful “made-to-measure” dress from China for a rock-bottom price. But be prepared that the dress might not be quite as wonderful in reality and it could require considerable alterations, at a considerable cost, for it to become the dress of your dreams. On the other hand, it could be absolutely perfect, so if you have the time and the guts – take a chance! No matter what you end up wearing, nobody needs to know if you spent a small fortune on a couture gown or borrowed it from a local gemach. So, enjoy the special day among family and friends, and know that whatever you wear, you’ll look perfect.

At Demiss
the exclusive designer hat store, the mantra is, “everything starts at the top.” Using only quality fabrics and seasonal, up-to-date colors, Esti Holzberg, Demiss’s chief designer, invests her best into every single hat design. Inspired by chic European style, all fashion products are exclusive to Demiss stores. With its meticulous production process, Demiss is bound to have the perfect hat for every occasion. Guaranteed down to the finishing touches, Esti wants Demiss customers to feel enveloped by love, care, and attention. Esti began the Demiss line of hats when many of her regular customers, who had bought hats from her for years, were looking for something new and fresh. Stemming from the belief that women value looking
unique, she created the perfect accessory to make them stand out from the crowd. Indeed, the Demiss Company makes many hat styles to suit each woman’s vibrant personality and with the value of each customer’s distinct individuality. At the forefront of fashion, Demiss hats are extra special as they labor over every intricate detail, and thus, have developed a name for dictating the latest in headwear fashion. Demiss also limits the production of each exclusive hat style to prevent other women showing up at an event with the same one! Many women, especially brides, have a hard time choosing headwear such as scarves and hats. Esti specifically enjoys assisting brides as they begin this special new phase of life. She and her assistants help these women to decide exactly what suits them best. There is also a special bridal service, where brides can rent unique headwear for their wedding day. The rental service is also available for other women who have the custom to top their wig with a hat.
The team at Demiss also provides bespoke consulting services and extra assistance for brides who need significant quantities with various styles and are available to help you coordinate headwear to your wardrobe. They also advise and assist them in buying the items they need, and show them different ways to wear the headwear so that they will always look great. Demiss wants their brides to sail through their married lives feeling and looking their best every day.
T
he newest Demiss product items include a recently launched line of girl’s hats and sophisticated hair accessories for celebrations and special events. The staff at Demiss invites the public to visit anytime during store opening hours, and be impressed by their unique variety of accessories and hats to complement any occasion. INTERVIEW ELIANNA GASNER MAKEUP ARTIST & HAIR STYLIST
The Art and Magic of Bridal Makeup By Heidi Tapnack
I
t was my first wedding. I mean, not MY wedding. But my first opportunity to meet and shadow a professional makeup and hair artist on a bride’s actual wedding day. Few little girls’ dreams surpass the desire to be a fly on the wall of a bride’s dressing room and here I was. Living the dream. As I stepped onto the curb, I caught sight of Elianna Gasner unloading her gear from her car including big black boxes on wheels that make her look more like the audio-visual team coming to set up the sound system than a professional makeup artist. “It’s a sort of Mary Poppins bag,” laughs Elianna, stopping to shake my hand warmly. “It holds loads of interesting stuff. And with hard work, nurtured talent and a little magic, it makes anything possible.” Elianna Gasner travels around the country to make up brides from all over the globe, and works closely with numerous wedding planners. But she’s not your average cosmetics professional. After studying cutting-edge makeup techniques in Hollywood, she launched her career by being the first to introduce airbrush technology to the Israeli makeup industry. Not only her unique talent and pioneering spirit make her one of the most sought-after artists in her field but her ability to see each client as a person, and not just a human canvas. “No matter how many times I come to make up a bride on her wedding day, I’m still as excited as I was when I did it for the first time. There’s an electricity in the air and it’s contagious. I feel like my job is to look into her soul and use my techniques and tools to reflect it on the surface. It’s a huge responsibility and I truly feel privileged to be part of the most special day in women’s lives.” 120 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
As we walk through the front door of the bride’s house, Elianna greets today’s kallah, Chani, with a friendly smile and gets straight to work setting up her mobile salon. “It’s warmer today than the day we met for our trial consultation,” she says to the young bride, “So one of the most important things we need to decide is what will work best in this weather.” Is the climate a big factor in choosing makeup? “Israeli summers are hot and humid,” she says, unclipping the hinge on her box and revealing the kaleidoscope of colors, powders and jars. “I usually recommend brides wear their hair in an up-do for summer weddings. They’ll feel cooler and it will help their makeup last through all the dancing and, um, perspiration. And if you do decide to use hair extensions, I recommend using two different shades to create a little more depth.”
I truly feel privileged to be part of the most special day in women’s lives Elianna Gasner
Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist
She starts to dab here and brush there, chatting amiably with the bride as if they’re long-standing friends. “But I try to tread carefully when it comes to hair advice for brides in frum circles. Because for most, it’s the last time they’ll be showing their hair in public and it wouldn’t be fair to expect them to hide it all away in an up-do because of seasonal considerations. Being sensitive to their
needs is an essential part of my job and it won’t affect me working my magic, no matter what they choose.” She also recommends paying attention to how a day-time wedding would affect makeup decisions. “Friday morning weddings are gaining popularity in summer, partly because caterers charge less for day events. But this means that the wedding will take place in broad daylight, when light is harsher and skin tone is accentuated.” She suggests a lighter, softer look for summer day weddings to avoid harsh lines and maintain a natural glow. When is the best time to book a hair and makeup artist? “The sooner the better! The closer you get to your event, the less availability artists will have. So don’t wait for the last minute.” Elianna reaches into her bag of tricks and produces her magic wand—the famous airbrush—and I have to admit I’m fascinated by how effortless she makes it look. Cosmetic innovation is one thing, but the level she’s mastered is another! “You want your makeup to stay put for the entire evening so the products I use are premium quality, waterproof and specifically suited to the Israeli climate. In Hollywood, I trained on airbrush, which affords a flawless look that doesn’t ‘cake’ or wear off as the evening wears on.” What makeup styles do you offer? “The sky is the limit! From Fresh and Natural, to Sun-Kissed and Glowing, or Glitzy and Glam. There’s no right or wrong. It all depends on what best suits a bride’s features and personality.” “I thought I’d feel uncomfortable with so much makeup on,” Chani glances up at me from below her matte eye shadow. “But
when I showed Elianna a picture of the makeup style I like, she told me that to get that model’s look, brides need a little more makeup than they’d usually wear.” “It means stepping outside your comfort zone,” says Elianna. “And I understand that can be hard. Makeup is a very intimate and personal thing for women and it’s important they feel comfortable with what I’m doing. Some women don’t wear makeup on a regular basis and even those who do are used to applying it themselves. Brides literally have to put their face in someone else’s hands and trust that they’ll be happy with the results.” “In any case, after about twenty minutes the makeup will settle into the skin and look more natural. You’ll thank me after you see the pictures!” “And while we’re on the subject, even the most beautiful bride in the world can look mediocre if photographed by a mediocre photographer! So don’t skimp on a photographer. Pictures are the only way to preserve the memory of everything you invested in the wedding (including your makeup and hair!), and they’re the only thing that remains after it’s over.” How can you make sure a bride’s
makeup won’t smudge or come off? “First of all, I use waterproof makeup that is very durable. Tears (of joy!) or sweat can be dabbed at with a tissue until dry. That way, the water is absorbed and not the makeup. Avoid rubbing but don’t worry if you forget to dab or if something goes awry. I provide each bride with a touch-up kit that includes lipstick, powder, foundation and whatever else they might need.” Elianna’s experience has taught her how to keep to tight schedules and ward off the pressure that could filter down to her client. “One week before the wedding, I build the wedding schedule together with the kallah and I’m always prepared for any possible scenario. There have even been times when I’ve had to improvise a quick fix for another professional’s mistake! For example, when one bride’s bouquet arrived wilted, and the florist claimed it was absolutely fine, I called them and demanded a new bouquet, which they eventually did provide. “We repaired a client’s torn wedding slipper moments before her wedding ceremony was scheduled to begin, painted a soiled wedding dress with white-out to conceal a soiled area of fabric and even saved the day when a restored vintage
wedding dress fell apart at the seams on the bride’s body. There’s no point in saying, ‘It’s not my job,’ so I just work out a solution and get on with it. The main thing is to make our client happy.” How do you manage hair and makeup for the whole wedding party? “I have a support team of assistants for events with large families or multiple bridesmaids with a long list of makeup and hair requests. My standards are uncompromising when it comes to employees, so I review them thoroughly before handpicking the best candidates and personally training them. My assistants are highly talented, patient and just plain lovely. They all speak excellent English and as a team we’re happy to work wherever you feel most comfortable.” At the end of a long day, just before Chani was whisked off to the bedeken, she showered Elianna with thank yous: “You’re a wizard. I never thought I could look this beautiful. Can I shrink you to pocket-size and take you everywhere I go?” Sounds like another satisfied client, on her way to begin a new life. And Elianna? She’s already on her way to her next lucky bride.

P
rincess Spa & Cosmetics is not your run-of-the-mill cosmetics center. Everyone needs some nurturing and self-love sometimes, and many women choose to get a mani-pedi, a massage, or a facial to pamper themselves. At Princess Spa you’ll find every kind of cosmetics treatment you can imagine, from laser hair removal to aromatherapy massages to professional makeup to Botox treatments; but you will also find much, much more. That’s why they offer a wide range of unique, all-inclusive packages that leave clients feeling beautiful, relaxed, and rejuvenated inside out. The personal attention and flexibility they offer—running events and providing treatments even into the small hours of the night—is unmatched in the industry. The most exhilarating events in our lives can be taxing on our bodies. New mothers, especially, sometimes feel that they’ve “let themselves go” during the pregnancy. Between caring for the baby 24/7, the lack of sleep, and recovering from the birth, so many women find themselves in the postpartum months yearning to regain a sense of control over their bodies and feel beautiful again. Princess Spa offers a “birth package” that includes a mani-pedi, body waxing, eyebrow and lip waxing, and a
deep facial. This package is the perfect gift that will remind a new mother that she deserves to be taken care of, too. Every bride wants to look beautiful on her wedding day; the services offered at Princess Spa help brides not only look their best, but feel their best. Their one-of-a-kind package that includes every kind of beauty care you could hope for—and then some. The package includes not only a full beauty treatment, but also professional hair and makeup for the wedding, five tanning treatments, a heavenly hourlong full-body massage, and a free luxury hotel suite for the night! There is no better way to ensure that you will walk down the aisle looking breathtaking and feeling fantastic. But why wait until the wedding? You can throw a bachelorette party with Princess, too! Their “bachelorette package” includes mani-pedis, MicroZone facials, drinks, refreshments, bathrobes, and slippers for everybody, plus a luxurious massage for the bride. This gives the bride an opportunity to enjoy some low-pressure, quality time with her friends and family, and relax and pamper herself before the big day. If you’re celebrating a birthday, you can enjoy a birthday package just for yourself, choosing between a MicroZone facial, a moisturizing facial, or an hour-long massage to accompany your mani-pedi. Or, you can bring some friends along, and add the full range of beauty treatments to enjoy together, including a massage and refreshments.
You can even arrange to add a sumptuous breakfast from a nearby café. Princess Spa also offers bat mitzvah girls an opportunity to celebrate their approaching womanhood with a highly original bat mitzvah party! This event for up to 12 participants includes a spectacular fashion show starring the bat mitzvah girl and her friends, plus age-appropriate beauty treatments and activities. The girls can try on makeup, enjoy a mani-pedi, paint their nails, and more. The party is run by an on-staff event manager, and the bat mitzvah girl gets an edited DVD video of her special day at the end. If you’ve been looking for a creative idea for a bat mitzvah party that everyone will be talking about for years, look no further. But you don’t need an excuse to gift yourself (or a friend) a blissful day of self-love. Princess offers two levels of “pampering packages” which include a facial, a full-body massage with warm stones, a mani-pedi—and a free coffee and pastry to top it off. The deluxe “Princess” package also includes a foot massage and a free bottle of paraffin to moisturize and rejuvenate the skin on your hands. Princess Spa is a first-class cosmetics center that offers not only a full range of luxurious, state-of-the-art beauty treatments, but a wide selection of packages to suit any of the momentous events in a woman’s life. Their team of cosmeticians, beauty experts, and massage therapists is dedicated to helping every woman discover her inner princess.

Amir Moyal A CUT ABOVE THE REST
How a Hair Salon in a Quaint Jerusalem Neighborhood Takes Wigs to Another Level Amir Moyal is an established hairstylist with over a decade of experience. He has picked up tricks of the trade all over the world and garnered experience and inspiration in the most highly-rated European hair salons, working alongside their topnotch stylists.
T
here are four elements of Amir’s work on which he prides himself and which are the bedrock for making his trademark wigs. Sensational designs, ensuring compatibility between wearer and wig, creativity and personal attention. Amir is extremely meticulous with regard to the quality of the hair used for his wigs and makes sure
132 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
By Batya Shevach
the color, thickness and texture is suitable for the specific customer. Before a wig is even planned, Moyal consults with the customer to get a sense of her personality
and style preferences. His fashion-conscious clientele value his ability to match a wig to its wearer while focusing on comfort, giving each woman a good feeling about how she looks. We were fortunate to catch Amir for a few minutes during his busy workday.
How long have you been working in the hair and wig business?
At age 16 I first began working in a barber shop and now I’m 32, so I’ve been dealing with hair for sixteen years. I started in wigs eight years ago. Today I offer my services all over the
world, selling in different locales each time I travel. Afterwards, clients from those places continue to order more wigs and even come to my salon here in Israel.
What type of hair do you use?
I work with Brazilian and European hair. I use Brazilian hair for clients who want a silkier, full, thick wig with a natural look and feel. European and Russian hair is best for those who want light and comfortable wigs. You can also tell by a woman’s skin tone whether she naturally has thicker or thinner hair. But of course if a client wants something different from her natural look, we will fulfill her request.
The big difference between me and other sheital machers is that I give a twoyear warranty on all my wigs. Most of the others give only a one-year warranty or none at all. I truly believe in the quality of my products. Amir Moyal
established hairstylist
How do you prepare a wig for a customer?
I try to naturally air dry and set all my wigs. It gives them a more natural look, and it is easier to create something closer to the client’s natural hair. The style of a wig is defined by the color, highlights and cut, rather than in the type of hair drying technique used. I suggest a wig to the client according to her personality. If I see she’s the type who will want to set and style it herself, I’ll suggest a wig that needs to be blow-dried and set. If the client is more casual and sporty, and wants an easy-care wig, I’ll suggest an air-dry model. I have lots of different types of comfortable and stretchy caps, and together with the customer we choose a cap that will fit her well without losing the shape of the cut.
What is your approach to customer service?
The big difference between me and other sheital machers is that I give a two-year war-
ranty on all my wigs. Most of the others give only a oneyear warranty or none at all. I truly believe in the quality of my products. I know my wigs are made very well, so I’m willing to stand behind my product and am happy to give customers this option. Many women buy wigs with lots of hair—which is uncomfortable—just because they’re scared the hair will fall out. Here we make wigs with the right amount of hair and give clients the opportunity of coming back to fill in and add hair for up to two years from the purchase date.
What if a client orders a custom wig and is not satisfied in the end?
His fashion-conscious clientele value his ability to match a wig to its wearer, giving each woman a good feeling about how she looks as well as focusing on comfort.
First of all, when we prepare the order I try to make it 100% right. After considering the client’s taste and expectations there’s hardly room for error. But like in any other business, sometimes there are mistakes and things we fail to take into account. In such situations I take the responsibility and am willing to make repairs and changes, or even exchange the wig. In rare cases the money is returned to the client. My years of experience in hair styling have brought me to a place where I try to make the client happy not only with the hair but also with the way the wig looks on her. Amir sums up his feelings about his work. “This profession is almost therapeutic for me and fills me with enthusiasm to continue creating. I am energized by my happy clients, and the work gives me a great sense of satisfaction.” Amir Moyal's salon is located at Echad Haam 2 corner of Keren Hayesod, Jerusalem. Amir can be reached at 02-999-4829, 054666-1826 and amirmoyal2011@gmail.com. www.simchas.biz I 133

DIAMONDS
Beyond the Sparkle By Rabbi Tully Bryks
B
uying diamonds for that special someone (even yourself), requires a much different approach than most purchases. Unlike buying groceries or clothing, purchasing diamond jewelry tends to be a less frequent occurrence. As such, most buyers lack the expertise or experience to ensure that they are getting the right diamond for the right price. In addition, not all diamonds are created equal; there are many variables that can affect the price, quality and longevity of the diamond. And finally, being that diamond jewelry is often bought for those who are nearest and dearest to us, such a purchase may be worth a little extra effort. So how does a diamond shopper know what to look for? What are the tricks of the trade? How can you get the best bang for your buck? The keys to evaluating diamonds are the 4 C’s: Cut, Carat, Color and Clarity. Here’s a brief summary of what they are: • CUT – “Well-cut” diamonds can make a diamond look more brilliant, improve its color and mask imperfections. • CARAT – Carat weight is how the weight of a diamond (and its resulting size) is measured. As a general rule, the heavier the weight, the larger the stone, although its corresponding size changes in relatively small increments. • COLOR – The color of a diamond determines its sparkle and reflectiveness. Colors range from D (superior) to Z (inferior). It is worth noting that color differences are harder to notice in smaller diamonds. 140 I Simchas Guide 2017-2018
There is a price premium for white as opposed to yellow. • CLARITY – Diamond clarity depicts the quality of a diamond, along with any internal or external blemishes. Clarity can also affect durability. Slight changes in quality can offer significant financial savings, but these differences are usually not noticeable to the naked eye. Beyond the 4 C’s, there are other factors to consider, especially for those living in Israel. Here are some of the key ones: • SETTINGS – Settings made in some countries, such as Turkey or Hong Kong, tend to be of lower quality than those made here in Israel. • CLARITY ENHANCED – Modern technologies, such as laser treatment, enable diamonds to be “clarity enhanced” in order to remove inclusions. The result is a diamond that is essentially identical to one that hasn’t been enhanced, but with a 30-40% lower price. • BUYING DIRECT – Shoppers can often save a whopping 60-70% when buying directly from a reputable manufacturer. Retail stores tend to have high overhead costs, which are passed on to the consumer. Saving money? Ultimately, diamond shopping boils down to personal preference. When budget-conscious, some
would choose a larger diamond with lower quality, while others would prefer a smaller diamond of higher quality. And just as with diamond clarity, even minor differences in color and carat weight, although not noticeable to the naked eye, can offer significant savings. What if a shopper sees the perfect piece of jewelry in an expensive retail store, but it is beyond their budget? Can he go directly to a manufacturer and save money? To find the answer, we consulted with Zvi Hager, partner and founder of EBS Diamond and Jewelry Manufacturers, based here in Israel. He explained, “Sophisticated manufacturers offer customized ring design, computerized simulation of the final product and a 3-D printed prototype before it is manufactured. We can actually recreate any ring you see in a store or magazine, with your specifications and budget in mind.” With proper research and direction, diamond shopping does not have to be a complicated or frustrating experience and it certainly doesn’t need to break anyone’s budget. On the contrary, by turning to a reputable manufacturer, you can show your loved ones how much you value them by finding that “diamond in the rough” and still have some money left over for groceries and clothing.

ucked away in a historic building at the heart of Jerusalem, you will find Aria: an extraordinary gallery of high-end jewelry specializing in diamonds, precious stones and gold. Aria Diamonds and Jewelry was established in 2015 by gemologist, diamond manufacturer and dealer Tommy Baruch. Tommy has been cutting and selling diamonds at Israel’s Diamond Exchange in Ramat Gan, one of the world’s leading diamond districts, for 17 years. His diamonds are bought by top dealers in the USA, who distribute them to some of the greatest jewelers in the world. Aria is Tommy’s labor of love: a highstandard concept gallery offering highend, affordable jewelry that is crafted by Israeli designers and jewelers at Aria’s workshop. Here Tommy concentrates all the skills he has mastered throughout his years of experience: designing spectacular
jewelry by selecting stones, setting, polishing and finishing each piece to perfection. Each piece at Aria is his creation, from rough stone to sparkling final product. Tommy developed this business model as a response to a growing demand for customized diamond jewelry. Throughout his years of experience, Tommy noted that his clients prefer to choose their own diamonds, and request rings, earrings and bracelets designed specially to match their unique taste and style. For this reason, alongside his impressive display of exquisite, pre-designed jewelry, Tommy and his team of talented and creative designers create personalized pieces for customers. They encourage clients to bring photographs of pieces they like, and, working with photographs and sketches, create a blueprint for the piece of each client’s dreams.

A FAMILY TRADITION OF CREATING TEFILLIN
W
hile the mitzvah of tefillin is found in the written Torah, the majority of the laws of tefillin are actually found in the oral Torah, and have been passed down from generation to generation, from father to son, for thousands of years, from the moment a Jewish boy arrives at the age of his Bar Mitzvah. Similarly, in some families, all of the holy work of preparing and making the tefillin itself is also a family tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Meet the holy Eisenbach family, rooted in the Old City of Jerusalem, who has toiled in the work of tefillin making for almost 100 years. Eisenbach Tefillin actually first become famous in Europe with Rav Shalom Lev Eisenbach, who was known for his unmatched expertise in tefillin preparation specifically, and religious articles in general. His son, Rav Avraham Eisenbach, immigrated to Israel from Hungary during WW1, bringing along his father’s craft, and to this day their descendents continue the family tradition of making tefillin known for
their pristine beauty. Eisenbach Tefillin’s top-quality is a result of combining technical expertise of the highest order with a strict safeguarding of halacha, as well as all the unique beautifications that pertain to this special mitzvah. Rav Avraham Simcha Eisenbach z"l
Today, at the state of the art Eisenbach Tefillin factory near Beit Shemesh, Jewish boys that are approaching the age of Bar Mitzvah are invited to come and experience firsthand the numerous preparations that go into making their tefillin. They will even be able to contribute to the process of creating their own Eisenbach Tefillin, by tasks such as putting the parshiot into the batim of the tefillin. This offers Jewish boys a unique and fascinating learning experience to help connect them to the mitzvah of tefillin before they become a Bar Mitzvah when they will fulfill this mitzvah each day—thus becoming themselves a link in the chain of Jewish tradition.
Come enjoy an interactive experience when purchasing your tefillin at the Eisenbach family factory!
