FEARLESS
Do women take as many risks as men?
Studies indicate that women aren’t the risk takers men are. While studies confirm that stronger, taller and more attractive people are perceived to be more risk tolerant, they also show that women lag behind men in risk-taking. "We find that women are indeed more risk averse than men," concluded economists Rachel Croson and Uri Gneezy (2009) in the Journal of Economic Literature.

Are they really? Or are they just more strategic with risktaking? Research finds that under stress, men jump in the risk pool whereas women are more cautious. Doesn’t that mean that men may at times react too quickly, and Just 1.8 percent of women take time to women-owned businesses think it through? in America have revenues above $1 million per year. But the women I meet have ambition for their professions and their life. They have career goals. Their path to achievement may zig-zag a bit, but these women have built successful companies, and not sacrificed a fulfilling life along the way. We need to celebrate them! Those stories need to be told. These are the role models, the mentors, we want to emulate. These women may not be fearless, but they don’t let fear stop them, they move through the fear to get to the life they want. Ambitionless? Hardly.

WHY EMPLOYEES
UNDERPERFORM It might be hard to understand why your troops are not running to the finish line at full speed but once you understand why, you can get them motivated again. Here are top reasons employees underperform, and ways to inspire them once again. 1. Employees feel disengaged with the work they are

b. Learn their strengths and weaknesses and give them work that will allow them to succeed while still feeling challenged. c. They need to understand the importance of their piece and how it contributes to the overall goal and success of the project.

More financial regulations are coming. Fallout from the November 2014 G-20 meeting in Brisbane, Australia could impact your bank account. The G-20 is a group of the 20 richest nations whose combined economies account for about 85 percent of the world’s GDP and 80 percent of global trade. Founded in 1999, its mission is to help the international financial system work through policy agreements and its members include major central banks and the European Union. The G-20's November actions are redefining what bank account “ownership” means. “We took new steps toward strengthening our banks,” said President Obama at the G-20, “...making sure that we've got a financial system that's more stable and that can allow a bank to fail without taxpayers having to bail them out.” New banking laws and policies would mean that our deposits are no longer our’s as reported in Business Week “that bank deposits are just part of a commercial banks' capital structure.” In other words, bank deposits can be used to bail out a failed bank, or now called a “bailin”. Depositor assets along with employee
pensions could be used much like that of a stockholder when an entity files bankruptcy. This is exactly what happened to the depositors in Cyprus in March 2013 when their government, along with European and International Monetary Fund approval, seized bank accounts to pay the Cypriot banks obligations.
What about FDIC insurance covering the first $250,000 of deposits? Created during the Great Depression, the FDIC has roughly $37 billion in reserves funded by bank payments, and access to another half-trillion dollars that the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve might provide in a crisis. However, the FDIC currently claims to insure more than $7 Trillion, and could only restore about $1 of every 14 dollars. If one of the five biggest US banks, which hold approximately half of all U.S. accounts, were to fail, the FDIC might not be able to restore the accounts of that single bank. Going a step further, if the Federal Reserve had to crank up the printing press to allow the FDIC to reimburse all depositors, it would debase the value of the dollar and cause rapid hyperinflation. u Sources: Wall street Journal, Economist.com, USA Today, Business Week, http://www.swissamerica.com/ G20.php

HEARING THE Sweet Sound
OF SUCCESS:
AUDIOLOGY SPECIALTY CLINIC Just a few short years ago, three female audiologists decided to start their own audiology business in Sioux Falls. Melinda Heegel, Dr. Kristen Kaufman and Dr. Lindsey Koch have a combined 53 years of experience in the hearing care field. They talked with Biz about what it takes to run a business with multiple partners, stay on top of rapid advances and compete in a growing industry. Hearing loss does not just affect older people, there are a staggering number of young adults who also experience hearing loss… Research shows that only 20% of people who need hearing aids actually get them. And among those, most live with hearing loss for over 10 YEARS before finally getting a hearing aid! Why do people wait so long?
Kristen: Because hearing loss is often gradual, they may not realize how much they’re missing. Also your brain may compensate by filling in what you perceive the words to be. Some people fear hearing aids will make them look older or unattractive. But actually, we’re finding changes in attitude now -especially among the baby boomers. Their attitude is, “We’re NOT going to let life pass us by!” They want to fix what needs to be fixed, and they want quality. At the same time, technology has improved and hearing aids are getting smaller and less noticeable with digitization.

“Today 1 in 5 teenagers have some type of hearing loss. That’s an increase of about 30 percent in the past two decades.” – Dr. Kristen Kaufman, Audiology Specialty Clinic
What are the most common signs of hearing loss?
Lindsey: The 4 most common signs of hearing loss are 1) other people are always mumbling, 2)
you hear but you don’t understand, 3) ringing in the ears, 4) a plugged sensation in the ear.
Today hearing aids can look like diamond earrings, an earbud, a Bluetooth! Tell us about the advances.
Melinda: Hearing aids come in different styles and colors. We try to match the hearing aid to a person’s taste and physical dexterity. Some people have numbness, arthritis or vision problems, hearing aids can be customized for them. For kids, there are hearing aids with stickers on them – animal prints, sports, just about anything. They can be matched to your hair color – charcoal, gray, silver, beige. And they are now so small they’re almost imperceptible; for many, the bulky tube has been replaced by a small digital wire. Others go directly in the ear.
What are some of the latest breakthroughs?
Lindsey: Most of the newer smart phones are compatible with add-on devices. For example, there is a “Find My Hearing Aid” app, so if you set your hearing aids down, your phone can find them. Customized wireless add-on devices can pair your hearing aid to the TV, that way if you’re in a room full of people watching a show, the sound doesn’t have to be turned up for you. Another device can

ages, we each have specific skills to bring to the table, and can easily bounce ideas off one another. Above all, we respect each other.
How did the 3 of you decide to go into business together?
Kristen: We should have done it sooner! It was scary getting started, it’s a lot of work and you can get discouraged, but I would encourage anyone who’s thinking of starting their own business to give it a try. It helped that we came into this as coworkers – not just friends.
Kristen: We all worked well together at a prior practice and enjoyed each other’s company, so we decided to go out on our own. It’s so different when you do it for yourself. It’s very rewarding. Melinda: We had to learn the business side of things so we each took a piece and learned that aspect. We talk through issues and we all have to be on board, we have made some good decisions, and some not so good, but we made them all together. We also utilize mentors within the industry. Lindsey: Although we come from different walks of life and are different
Best lesson learned from being in business together?
What inspires you?
Lindsey: Sometimes relationships are strained due to hearing loss. It’s great when you can take someone who is isolating themselves from a loved one, and give them their hearing back. Helen Keller said, “Blindness separates us from things, but deafness separates us from people.” u

Prevent Hearing Loss!
• D ementia: People with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease than those who retain their hearing. • C ancer: Many people are unaware that hearing loss can be a side effect of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. • W ork Productivity: Untreated hearing loss is linked to reduced earnings, increased workplace absenteeism, lower workplace productivity, as well as depression, anxiety and cognitive decline. • Y our Brain: Those with hearing loss experience a 30 to 40% greater decline in thinking abilities compared to their peers without hearing loss. Declines in hearing abilities may accelerate gray matter atrophy and increase the effort necessary to listen and comprehend…Hearing aids may not only improve hearing but preserve the brain. • P revention: Wear ear plugs or filters when exposed to loud noises – hunting, machinery, concerts. One blast of sound can damage the hearing permanently. One loud rock concert could result in temporary hearing loss for one person, but permanent damage for another. Sources: Johns Hopkins Medicine, Better Hearing Institute: Impact of untreated hearing loss.
DO YOU KNOW THE 5 WARNING SIGNS OF HEARING LOSS? 1. People mumble when they speak. 2. You hear but do not always understand. 3. You ask people to repeat themselves. 4. Ringing in your ears. 5. Difficulty understanding speech in a noisy background.

BOOST
YOUR ENERGY WITHOUT CAFFEINE
In a fast paced, deadline driven world we need to be alert and on the go. Coffee, soda, energy drinks can be bad for your health, teeth, and cause crashes later in the day. Mental: Take a break from what you are
doing and listen to some upbeat music. Sing out loud in the office, car, outside or wherever you feel comfortable! Singing decreases blood pressure, increases energetic arousal and decreases tension.
Swap out white flour with whole grains. While carbs can give you an initial boost it will leave you feeling drained later on. Whole grains also leave you feeling full longer. Adding fruit can increase your natural sugars and keep your metabolism moving.
Light it up! Find a window to soak in the sun or turn on an extra lamp. Your body naturally gets ready for bed when exposed to darkness. Brighten up your office to help your body stay active and on topic.
Eat smaller meals. Eating large meals takes up all of your energy for digestion. Stay hydrated, drinking water keeps your blood flowing freely. Dehydration slows everything down, including mental stimulation.
Attitude Adjustment. Having a positive outlook on your day can help your brain feel more prepared to handle all of your tasks and increase your energy.
Feeling sluggish? Grab a vitamin-filled booster. Emergent C is a great source of healthy energy.
Sit up straight. Just like mom used to say. Sitting up straight allows for proper blood flow. This is linked to everything from digestion to mental alertness
Other tips: On the go? Pop a piece of gum. Chewing gum stimulates your central nervous system and increases alertness. It can also curb hunger if you have those afternoon cravings. u
Diet: Try these vitamins to boost you
naturally. Ginseng, kelp, licorice root and even cinnamon have all been found to boost energy when used correctly.

Businesses owned by women in smaller metro cities like Monroe, MI, Racine, WI and Lancaster, PA have much higher average income than businesses owned by women in larger cities. with Country Music Star
Dee
MESSINA Superstar Jo Dee Messina has been honored by the Academy of Country Music, sold over 5 million records worldwide, and been nominated for 2 Grammys. She’s also a busy wife and mom of two boys, Noah and Jonah. Now she can add “author” to the list. Here she talks to BizNOW about her busy life and what’s ahead.
Jo Dee, you left home and moved to Nashville at age 19 and worked several jobs while you pursued your music. Talk about those days and what gave you the courage to believe in yourself? I would love to say I came to Nashville a determined warrior. However, I think being naive at that point was working in my favor. I was a singer and wanted a record deal. That's all I knew. I didn't realize the city was loaded with incredible talent. I simply knew I had a dream and that was all I focused on.
You’ve written many songs. Is there one that has special meaning to you?
It depends on the day, Charlotte. If I'm having a great day, it
could be "I'm Alright." If I'm struggling it could be "Bring on the Rain". My newest material is always my fondest because it is reflective of how I am feeling at the moment. A song, yet to be recorded, "Will You Love Me" is leaning towards one of my favorites.
What do you like best about performing?
I love the interaction with the crowd. I've always been a people person and have always entertained. Being out on stage, joking with the audience, sharing stories and being able to do what I love most, sing. It's just part of who I am.

“I can say, God is in charge of my life. He has opened doors and he has for sure closed some. I work really hard. I have a genuine love for what I do. When opportunities come my way, I appreciate every one and give the glory to God for making it possible."
- JoDee
Describe one perfect moment in your life.
There are so many. Just this morning my 3 yr-old little boy woke up at 4:30 and needed to be comforted. When he fell back asleep cuddled up to his monkey, I was overwhelmed with gratitude that I got to have that moment, in the silent dark of the night to watch my son rest peacefully. I literally prayed and thanked God for that moment.
Everyone goes through ups and downs in life. What have you learned from tough times?
You get what you give. It sounds simple. If someone gives all they’ve got to something, expect a great outcome. If you only give a half-hearted effort, that’s what you will get in return. I always try to do the very best I can at whatever I am doing so that I know the outcome will equal the effort.
You are a serial entrepreneur - a musical artist and now you've written a new book! Tell us about the book and what drives you? I love to be creative and inspire. That's what motivates me. My newest project is a book, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Thanks to Mom! It's a compilation of 101 stories of gratitude for people who have played the "Mom" role in someone’s life. I was thrilled when asked to do this book. I have such a great relationship with my Mother and have been striving to get established in the literary arena. This allowed me to embrace both while paying tribute to "Moms" everywhere. I'm thrilled to now be a part of the literary world. 14 | BizNOWmagazine.com | April 2015
In your new book, which is your favorite story and why? Mine! ha ha! It's a tender moment and story between my mother and I, which comes up frequently in my life.
How do you manage multiple businesses?
I will let you know when I figure it out, Charlottte! I can't do anything alone. I try to enlist the help of excellent people to assist me in my endeavors. I'm not a fan of laziness or someone that is not driven. Good help is hard to come by. So when I do find good people, I try to treat them right.
How do you stay fit on a busy schedule? What's your workout routine?
Right now, I am a Beachbody coach. I am doing the 21 Day Fix EXTREME workout and food plan. You can do it anywhere and get results. I'm also a runner and try to get a good run in whenever time allows.

What do you want your legacy to be?
That I made a difference in this world while I was here and after I'm gone.
Jo Dee, when will you be back in the Midwest? Are you thinking of doing a Sioux Falls concert?
We are heading to the Midwest this spring. I would LOVE to make it to Sioux Falls if there was a fair or festival willing to have me. I love touring that area. People are "real" and down to earth.
Your philosophy on work?
If you do a job, do a GOOD job! If you want something you've never had, you have to do something you've never done. Don't let fear direct you.

Q
hat can I do to engage W employees with a healthier lifestyle?
Employee wellness has become a cliché. Employers are struggling to see a real return on investment for wellness programs because their premiums continue to rise and engagement for most individuals is lackluster. Employees struggle with these programs because they lack a true sense of workplace improvement and wellness. It’s time for a new perspective — one that focuses on staying healthy through long-term lifestyle changes. Companies can garner health insurance savings by promoting healthier lifestyles for their employees which reduces the cost of benefits, absenteeism, and the number of people coming to work while sick. One strategy is to combine occupational safety with wellness programs that prevent injuries and promote healthier lifestyles.

Q
What is the last unaudited IT expense for most companies?
For most commercial businesses and nonprofits printing is the last un-audited IT expense and there are sizeable cost savings available if minor changes are made. 90% of companies have no idea how much they spend on document output. By completing a thorough print audit and then implementing a Managed Print Solution, most companies realize: • Monthly Savings of 10-40%. • I nsight into who is printing, as well as what, where and why they are printing. • Budgetary Control • Decrease Demands on IT Staff

Q
What are the Governor’s Giant Vision Awards and why are they important to entrepreneurs?
The Giant Vision Awards Program recognizes entrepreneurs who have created business plans with a strong potential for success. In addition to the business plan competition winners, we also recognize an entrepreneur of the year. Entrepreneurship is a key element of our economic development strategy. The success of start-up businesses is critical to the continued growth of South Dakota’s economy. The Open Governor’s Giant Vision competition awards the following $20,000 First, $10,000 Second, $5,000 Third, $3,000 Fourth and $2,000 Fifth. The student competition awards $5,000 First, $3,500 Second, $2,500, Third and $2,000 Fourth. All finalists in both competitions receive $500. In 2015 there are 9 finalists in the open competition and 10 in the student competition. All entrepreneurs with ideas for their own business or recently started businesses that have significant growth potential in South Dakota are encouraged to apply. Existing companies may only have been in business three years or less and have annual sales revenue not to exceed $300,000. Entrepreneurs not currently living in South Dakota are eligible to participate in the competition, but they need to be committed to starting and operating their business in South Dakota. To get assistance in reviewing and developing their business plan, entrepreneurs considering entering the Giant Vision competition should contact the Small Business Development Center in their area or one of the business incubators located in several communities. These organization provide these services free of charge.

What I personally like best about the awards is seeing how the competitors benefit from the advice, guidance and sometimes investments of the judges and how other participants in the event have helped entrepreneurs and businesses succeed. Many of the most successful entrepreneurs in the competition who did not win made connections with mentors at the event that resulted in them perhaps modifying their plan and ultimately achieving great success in business. DocuTap, a very successful business in Sioux Falls, is an example of this.

BEWARE OF THE
PRICEBERG! Four ways your technology purchases may cost you more than you think – and what to do about it
No one wants to overspend on new technology. But choosing what seems like the least expensive option without doing your due diligence could end up costing a lot more in the long run. This is what I like to call the “priceberg”: Costs look small on the surface, but large expenses lie below the waterline. Here are a few ideas to help keep your budget above water.
Maintain Your Dignity
Many manufacturers require that buyers keep their products under some sort of maintenance agreement in order to receive updates and support. Or, they will charge for software updates that are needed to keep the product working properly. These requirements can result in considerable costs which sometimes amount to more than the original purchase price of the product. If you choose not play along, you may face substantial reinstatement fees when support or updates are eventually needed. Service charges can be another significant cost factor. If the products you’re evaluating require installation, updates, or repairs to be performed by a trained technician, take time to understand those costs as well. This can also be a factor when considering managed services, as the fees often don’t include adds, moves, or changes. Making sense of maintenance and service charges is an important part of considering the total cost of owning, and using, any technology.
Free Like a Puppy
Be wary of “free” licenses or products. Sometimes venders offer bundles or promotions that may give you additional items or upgrade you to a higher end model. Usually, these are well intentioned attempts to create more value and earn your business. However, these deals are often accompanied by increased costs related to the aforementioned maintenance and service fees. Even if you plan on expanding, don’t buy more than you need if the ownership costs of unused products or features outweigh the initial savings.
Growing Pains
Your technology must be able to grow with your business. Sometimes companies purchase smaller and cheaper devices, only to find themselves needing more capability or capacity a
short time later. Finding yourself in this scenario may result in hearing the dreaded, and expensive, phrase “forklift upgrade”. Basically, this means the money you initially invested is gone, and you now have to spend even more on a larger or more capable product. If you expect something to last you five years, make sure it has the ability to support what your needs will be in five years.
Failure to Adopt
The venders you’re purchasing products from can only provide them and help keep them operational. Getting the full value by using them to improve your business is your responsibility. Your implementation plan, and following through with it, can sometime be the most important part of a technology purchase. Change can be hard and some employees won’t happily embrace a new device or process, even if it makes them more efficient. When you make a technology purchase, be sure employees understand the vision for adopting it and then give them some accountability for actualizing the benefits. Technologies you use to be productive are tools and those that do not are just toys. The difference between the products you buy being tools or toys will often depend on your ability to make sure they are properly adopted. Technology can be a game-changer in business. But it can change the game in the wrong direction if a priceberg goes unseen while making a purchasing decision. Understanding the total cost of ownership is an important step in keeping your budget afloat. u Justyn Hauck is a sales engineer with CenturyLink Business. Empowering
Someone once said, “If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito.”
THROUGH RECOGNITION: The EmBe (Empowering You to Be) program works to facilitate the development of female leaders, and the Tribute to Women awards recognizes outstanding leaders in the community. This year the awards are on April 30 at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls where over 90 female leaders will be recognized at the 42nd annual event.
“Research shows that the number of women graduating from colleges with advanced degrees, the number of women starting businesses, and the number of women with wealth – all continue to increase. However, the number of women in top leadership roles in major organizations has not increased... continued recognition around the contributions of women is still necessary. We look forward to the day when it is not,” says Laurie Knutson, CEO of EmBe.
Biz talked with past EmBe winner Roxie Loftesness, who owns AvailAbility Employment Services in Sioux Falls. Roxie, how has the award opened new doors for you? Did the recognition help move your business forward? I am thankful for the many relationships that I have been able to build through EmBe. Working with these amazing leaders you become “successful by association” and work harder to live up to the standards set by these role models.
Roxie Loftesness
Tell us how you got started as an entrepreneur & some of the hurdles you had to overcome.
The opportunity to buy AvailAbility came when I was completing my degree in Organizational Development and it allowed me to work with my passion – human resources and staffing. Hurdles are inherent with every business and they build character. I had to balance home and work, keep up with technology, predict the economy and be there for my team. I am proof that you can make it over those hurdles with a great support system!
Best advice for young women starting a business?
“While the number of women graduating with advanced degrees and starting their own businesses has increased, the number of women in top leadership roles has not. Tribute to Women is one way to recognize the value that women bring to their communities.” – Laurie Knutson, CEO of EmBe 24 | BizNOWmagazine.com | April 2015
Build your business plan on paper with the advice of professionals and mentors. A great banker, CPA, attorney, and technology experts are important to your future success. Sioux Falls offers access to these professionals through many venues, and at no cost via SCORE, the Small Business Development Center and the SBA. These experts can help serve as quality control before you ever spend a dime.
BIZ Feature “This year for the very first time, we will recognize some of the men who have gone above and beyond to make our community one that empowers women and families.
!
– Ashley Thompson, EmBe Development Officer
Always build your compensation into the plan, and your expectations for the peaks and valleys of business. Build an informal “board of directors” or trusted advisors you can call on. Above all, give back to your community and plan time out for yourself.
How important is it for women to encourage other women in business? There have been many women – and
men – who have made a difference in my professional and personal life. I think I’m a “serial mentor.” I’m proud to step up and mentor others with whom I can share advice and and experiences that might help them become more successful or guide them around the “puddles” of life. To me, success is when I can help someone else be more successful! Knowledge and wisdom are meant to be shared. u

OVER EXTENDED BOOMERS FACE
FORECLOSURE Don’t let it happen to YOU! Millions of older Americans may be living in their dream home but have put their retirement security at risk with mortgage obligations being a major contributor. The average debt among the 55 and older crowd is $73,211. In 2013 the percentage of Americans age 55 and older with debt payments greater than 40 percent of their income, a benchmark of excess liability, rose to 9.2, up from the 2010 percentage of 8.5 according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute in Washington, D.C. Even more disturbing is the gradual re-inflation of the debt bubble that added to the 2008 tailspin with the percent of families whose debt payments are excessive relative to their incomes being at or near their highest levels since 1992. The aftermath of the 2008 recession also saw 1 in 10 declare bankruptcy. Significant debt levels among the over 55 group continues to rise, which could put millions of baby boomers’ homes at risk. Their debt increased to 65.4% in 2013, up from 53.8% in 1992. These record-setting levels of senior debt have placed nearly 10 percent at the doorstep of foreclosure or bankruptcy. In the past, the senior crowd learned from the Great Depression and did not accumulate as much debt and typically has had less debt than other population segments. They also
planned better for fixed income living. With many boomers still employed to sustain their lifestyle and debt at this time an unexpected change of circumstances such as loss of job, illness, death of a spouse, a major asset loss or significant home or auto repair could put them in jeopardy. “More near-elderly and elderly families are likely to find themselves at risk for severe changes in lifestyle than past generations,” wrote the researchers at the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Being the largest demographic, the number of heads of household who are over 55 is up 24 percent since 1992. The Employee Research Benefit report also brings to light that forty-two percent of households aged 65 to 74 had mortgage debt in 2013 compared to only 18 percent in 1992. And for households aged 75 and older, twenty percent had housing debt in 2013 compared to ten percent in 1992. This could create a serious problem for seniors the researchers warned. “This level of debt along with asset values still recovering from the 2008 recession will add to the difficulty for many people of this age to save for a retirement that will not run short of money.” On the positive side, total debt payments as a percentage of income among the elderly dropped from 11.4% in 2010 to 10% in 2013, and decreased their average debt from $80,465 to $73,211. Some can still take advantage of low rates and refinance to cut mortgage payments, increasing their equity for retirement. u Sources: http://realtormag.realtor.org/daily-news/2015/02/12/seniors-mayface-increasing-foreclosure-risk, The Bryan Ellis Investing Letter, Report, “Debt of the Elderly and Near Elderly, 1992-2013,” from the Employee Benefit Research Institute in Washington, D.C., “Why Mortgage Debt Threatens Boomers’ Retirements,” MarketWatch (Feb. 2, 2015)

BRAZIL MATTERS HOW SOUTH DAKOTA BENEFITS FROM TRADE WITH BRAZIL
• In 2013, Brazil consumed $150 million in goods and services originating from South Dakota. • International trade supports more than 124,000 jobs in South Dakota. With 80% of the world’s purchasing power outside the U.S., it is imperative for South Dakota’s future economic growth to expand trade and investment opportunities globally. In 2013, South Dakota customers spanned 184 countries generating $3.7 billion in exported goods and $1.3 billion in services, according to the U.S. Department of State. International trade supports more than 124,000 jobs in South Dakota, and Brazil is one of our biggest partners in crop production.
its research and development expenditures, cross pollinating the long-term economic growth for both countries supported by enhanced trade, education, and work study programs. Latin America R&D jumped 33% in 2010, led by Brazilian interest in transportation equipment manufacturing and the development of flexible fuel vehicles, which accounted for more than 90 percent of all new cars and light vehicles sold in Brazil according to a UN report on ethanol fuels.
Brazil, the 9th largest export market for the U.S., consumed $42.8 billion of U.S. goods in 2014 with $150 million of those goods and services originating in SD. The main products exported by Brazil to North Americans are mineral fuel, oil, iron, steel, machinery and beverages for a total $30.3 billion.
Brazil has the 7th largest GDP and the U.S. is their 2nd largest trading partner. Brazil competes with the U.S.A as the largest exporter of soybean and soybean oil to China, and they also export iron ore to China for steel production. u
The Brazilian government and private sector sponsor Brazilian university students who pursue studies in science, technology, engineering, and math abroad. The U.S. is a prime destination for these scholarship recipients, and 13 Brazilian students studied at Augustana College, Northern State University and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology through the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program. TO PRENUP OR NOT TO PRENUP? THAT IS THE QUESTION.
Wedding bells are in your future, and the blissful thoughts of life ever after with the one you love may cause your eyes to glaze over and your heart to beat faster. Forget the reality of a near 50% divorce rate, where we now know the number one cause of divorce is marriage. Seriously though, money matters rank among the top 5 reasons couples split up on any list. So what to do? a) Throw caution to the wind and follow the advice of musical group Abba with their hit “Take A Chance on Me!” or b) sit down with a lawyer and grind out a novel to cover every possible reason for a split and the consequences of each action on the offending party. Not very romantic, but might be appropriate in a few rare cases.
A business or businesses can also be identified in the Prenup as far as whom retains major ownership; acknowledging the skills required to run the company and the performance of the entity prior to the nuptials. For example, Joe owns a bakery and Mary runs a flower shop prior to tying the knot, so they would retain ownership of each in the event of a split. Growth or demise of either business during marriage is considered a shared event. Specific stock ownership or control will be honored but the court will attempt to counter the value with other assets.
Biz did some informal research, and a second-time around Connecticut couple summed up the dilemma this way: “As a young first timer, I would not insist on a Prenup, it would cloud the trust and commitment associated with getting started in life.” They quickly added “unless there were substantial assets on one side.” There were as many opinions as people interviewed, with most agreeing in concept that what a person brings to the marriage should exit with them as well – which is what a court will attempt to uphold anyway.
The real value of a Prenup comes in handy when either or both parties have substantial assets or liabilities and they want them enumerated so there is no question later on. Also, when two families merge, a Prenup and a Will can help to sort out which heirs get what in the unfortunate event of simultaneous deaths. u
Each state has its own laws when it comes to working out a property settlement agreement, and most will favor the welfare of minor children over you or any Prenup if challenged. Also, any property or assets that were acquired during marriage are generally split 50/50, again challenging any Prenup agreement. For example, you can’t expect to take the yacht if it was acquired during marriage with marital assets, even if it came from your paycheck. However, if you had agreed in advance that the marital home was to be ‘hers’ and the future hunting lodge on a secluded lake was to be ‘his’, the court would honor that, as long as the values were commensurate.
