Morning Questions:

© Julie Prairie Photography

A Baker’s Dozen How do you talk to yourself? If the questions you ask yourself are disempowering, like “Why does this always happen to me?” your mind looks for an answer. It might come up with, “Because you’re not lucky.” But if you ask an empowering question, such as, “How can I create what I want to have happen?” your brain looks for answers to that. It stimulates you to think in terms of possibilities and opportunities, setting you on the path to a real solution. So make it a habit to ask yourself questions that empower you. Here are some suggestions: 1. When was the last time you did something new? 2. What are you most proud of right now? 3. What are you most grateful for? 4. What do you do really, really well? 5. What would you like to learn, and what can you do today to bring it to pass? 6. What is your passion? 7. How do you define your purpose in life? 8. What are your top 5 values, and how are you living them on a daily basis? 9. What do you imagine yourself doing 5 or 10 years from now? 10. Who do you need to forgive, what do you need to let go of? 11. W hat one thing do you really want to do? What are you waiting for?

“Ancient Egyptians believed that upon death they would be asked two questions and their answers would determine whether they could continue their journey in the afterlife. The first question was, ‘Did you bring joy?’ The second was, ‘Did you find joy?” – Leo Buscaglia, author

12. W hat is your number one goal in the next 6 months? And for the baker’s dozen - #13 - and my personal favorite – when I’m stumped by a question I don’t know the answer to, I always ask myself, "But if I did know the answer, what would I be doing?” It’s simple, but profound, because I find that immediately answers start coming to mind.

Make empowering questions part of your day. By consistently focusing on positive questions, you’ll begin to bring them to pass, and create more happiness, excitement and joy in your life.

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE 6 QUALITIES OF

What do successful people have that sets them apart? Biz did the research, and here’s what we found.

1. Passion. We all have passions, but the key is to turn passion into action. How do you figure out what you’re passionate about? One way is to ask yourself what you enjoy doing. What makes you happy? Another way is to think of what bothers you and gets you going. What do you want to change? What do you feel that you could do better?

2. Focus. Forget multitasking. While we all value the ability

to multitask, in reality, the most successful people don’t do it. Instead, focus on one thing and do it well. Studies show that it can take a person 23 minutes to get back on track after being distracted from a task. So, if you’re trying to get something done, don’t stray off the focused path.

3. Emotional intelligence. Having emotional intelligence

means having the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions. Emotions can definitely help you succeed – you need passion! But, they can also hinder you. So, in order to be successful you should know how and when to manage your emotions. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “For every minute you remain angry, you give up 60 seconds of peace of mind.” Some super successful people manage their emotions through meditation.

4. Handling failure. Ugh, isn’t failing the worst? Not

according to successful people! They know that you need failure to improve. For example, Thomas Edison failed a thousand times before he finally figured out the light bulb. Even Michael Sarah Sproul of Harrisburg, SD is a Dakota State University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in English for New Media. Whether its reading a great book or paging through articles online, she can’t seem to get enough of literature.

Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, but he didn’t let that stop him. Failure is just a step towards success.

5. Setting goals. Here’s a crazy study that will blow your

mind: A graduating Harvard Business School class was asked if they had goals and if they wrote them down. Only 3 percent of them said they wrote their goals down. Cut to 10 years later when that same class was interviewed, and that same 3 percent that wrote their goals down was making 10 times the money than the other 97 percent of their class was combined! So, write your goals down.

6. Gratitude. Being grateful for things makes you exude

positive energy, and people can tell and want to give you positive energy back. Oprah says, “Be thankful for what you have, you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” More grateful people equal happier people. And happier people equal more successful people. No matter how you define “success,” Biz believes that cultivating these traits will benefit you throughout your life. u

LOVE YOUR JOB:

10 FAST GROWING JOB MARKETS

Thinking about a new career or want to start your own enterprise? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment trends continue to evolve with the economy and changing demographics. While homebuilding and construction jobs took a hit with the housing downturn, the energy sector is bursting with three of the fastest growing jobs. Of the 10 fastest growth positions, eight are forecast to grow by 20% or more over the next decade. Population growth and demographic shifts drive change in fields like education, health care and civil service. With a rapidly aging population, the number of adults needing personal services is expected to double over the next 40 years.

at 53.4% in a current field of 1,600. Using these parameters, the following would be the 10 fastest growing job sectors nationwide.

Entrepreneurs looking to provide services need to look at census data and the BLS’s Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) data to assess local needs and related job skill requirements. Some service professions lend themselves to self-employment while others fare better under the quality controls and accountability of a franchise.

in home nursing and hospice care. Although the highest growth forecast, annual salaries are not expected to improve by much. At $20,440, it is just 17.9% higher than it was in 2005.

The following list shows job growth by percent for the ten year period from 2005 through 2014. By only including occupations with more than 20,000, we omit the Industrial-organizational psychologists who have the fastest anticipated growth rate

2. Oil and Gas Roustabouts. Machinery – both repair

and construction of new machines – is a major concern for U.S. energy companies looking to maintain profits. Roustabouts are an integral part of any energy company that owns oil fields. Their pay is close to the national median for all occupations.

3. Convention and Event Planners.

As businesses become more global, they will require more meetings and conventions. Already, employment in the field has nearly doubled since 2005.

4. Massage Therapists. The number

of massage clinics has risen in concert with an aging population. At $37,000, their median salary is slightly higher than the national rate of $35,540. Additionally, 46% of massage therapists are self-employed, compared to roughly 6.5% across all occupations.

5. Logisticians and Marketing Specialists. Logistics and marketing is

the art of managing the flow of a products supply chain from raw materials through production, distribution, delivery, sales and service as applicable. The need for logisticians grew from 52,220 in 2005 to 125,670 in 2014 and typically requires a bachelor’s degree. At $74,000, they are paid double the national median salary.

6. Petroleum Engineer. Petroleum

engineers are among the highest paid workers in the nation. They plan drilling operations, and determine the equipment and methods necessary to efficiently extract oil or natural gas. Most positions require a bachelor’s degree and a license. When oil prices rise, there is more exploration and development in difficult areas.

!

7. Oil, Gas and Mining operators.

Higher energy prices often lead to more exploration and innovative ways to extract oil and gas. Operators working in natural resource extraction jumped from 19,530 in 2005 to more than 62,000 in 2014, a phenomenal growth rate, and the fastest for this sector. Median salaries increased by more than 46%, the highest salary growth rate in the country.

8. Residential Advisors. Advisors

organize activities in residential settings such as student dormitories, rehabilitation centers, and retirement homes. Along with health services, demand for RA’s is expected to increase as baby boomers retire.

9. Human Resources Specialist.

The spectacular increase of the past decade is expected to wane, perhaps due to automation that allows companies to conduct interviews online. Additionally, many websites allow companies to post job openings and search for new recruits directly, bypassing recruiters.

10. Music Directors and Composers. More than half of all music

directors and composers employed in the country work for elementary schools and high schools. Although experiencing the second largest growth rate and a 37.4% salary increase, future cuts to school budgets may hinder their employment outlook. u

DON’T LET WINTER BECOME A

PAIN IN THE BACK Winter can be a pain — a pain in the back, that is! Slips on the ice, hanging Christmas lights and shoveling snow from the driveway, sidewalk, porch, front steps (how does this stuff get everywhere?!) can all cause or aggravate back pain.

“About 80 percent of people have some back pain every year,” said Brian Wienk, PT, B ria

ScD, COMT, Avera Physical Therapist. “However, people with chronic back pain — pain that lasts more than three months — tend to have more symptoms or injuries during the winter.”

n W ie n k,

PT

,

Sc

D,

COMT

An injury from shoveling, for example, might be a muscle strain or a slipped disk. The cold can also aggravate the symptoms of sciatica or arthritis. If the pain radiates into the leg, it could be a serious sign of nerve compression. Besides pain, a person may experience numbness or tingling. “In minor instances, pain should subside within a couple of days with light exercise, ice and pain medication,” said Wienk. “If it goes on any longer than that, see a doctor or physical therapist.” Physical therapists use a variety of methods to address pain and tingling. Electrical stimulation, hot and cold treatments, soft tissue mobilization and joint mobilization relieve discomfort and promote healing. Your therapist may also recommend a series of gentle stretching and strengthening exercises to keep the muscles flexible and supportive. Wienk advises a proactive approach to prevent winter-related back pain from occurring in the first place. Here are a few of his tips:

1. Warm up. Shoveling in the morning can be a great “waker-

upper,” but your body isn’t prepared for lifting, bending and twisting. Stretch your side by bending to the left and right. Put your hands on your hips and bend backward several times. Even a quick walk warms your muscles.

2. Take breaks often. Your body is constantly bent forward while shoveling, so putting your hands on your hips and bending backward counteracts that strain.

3. Don’t overload your shovel with snow and keep the

toss close to your body. “Heaving a 10-pound load a distance from your body is like a 100-pound strain on your spine,” said Wienk.

4. Wear appropriate clothing. Dressing in layers will keep

you warm and prevent your joints and muscles from becoming stiff.

5. Wear treaded footwear while outside to prevent falls. 6. Stay active. Walking, swimming and biking are great ways

to build muscles and endurance. Even during episodes of back pain, take a walk to keep muscles warm and ward off stiffness. u Alyssa Kuecker is a writer with Avera Health Marketing. NEED FUNDING? Get Started with Venture Capital

One of the most important things a start-up company must do is to determine its business structure. This is more than just deciding whether an LLC or a C-Corp works best. This means what does the operating agreement look like? What rules will be in place within the company that will govern how the board is elected, how profits are shared, how risks are mitigated, how the company is managed, how capital will be secured, what the idea is worth, what the equity is worth, etc? Every one of these decisions will affect a company’s ability to find capital – both equity and debt. Working with knowledgeable and experienced individuals can help start-ups avoid a number of pitfalls that can kill a new project. The ultimate goal should be to create a win - win situation for founders and investors. Seeking the assistance of a qualified and knowledgeable business partner to help you get started can save money and many headaches, not to mention the legal and financial protections your structure could provide if a problem arises. While a legal firm can help create the corporate structure, private firms that specialize in helping start-ups can increase the odds of success. Look for one that specializes in simplifying the start-up process from initial concept through to full production. Seek a firm with a proven track record working with companies of all sizes and shapes across a variety of disciplines that can help you see your plans and dreams come to fruition. Their expertise in creating a business structure that can protect the interests of the founders while still attracting the capital needed to create a profitable business is an invaluable asset. 10 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2015

In addition to start up assistance, a firm should offer a full range of consulting services from a profitability study all the way through to debt financing.

Profitability Study Every project is feasible, given unlimited time and resources, but only a select few will be profitable. A profitability study is an indepth study of a concept to determine if profitability is feasible. While there is no such thing as a guaranteed success, proper due diligence goes a long way toward eliminating guess work and can help avoid costly mistakes. Some elements of a profitability study include: • Product Market Analysis

• Infrastructure needs

• Inputs Market Analysis

• Industry Trends

• Utility Costs

• Competitive Analysis

•T ransportation Issues (road improvements)

• Financial Analysis

Site Selection It is important to select the location that makes the most sense for your project, this includes both the physical characteristics of the site and the best location based on the potential market. A good consulting firm will make sure there are no unseen stumbling blocks along the way. Equity Fundraising

Raising equity is a challenge with a variety of state and federal agencies and their specific rules and regulations weighing in on every project. Your consulting partner should help develop a program that will allow you to secure investment while still following all of the rules of the Securities and Exchange Commission. They work with your legal firm to write the offering documents and prepare a presentation to take to investors. Ask if they will also conduct training for your board members and work with you while talking to investors to ensure all questions are answered. They should also help to secure advertising for your project.

FOR THE HOLIDAYS

© Julie Prairie Photography

3 Tips from Lisa Soma of Organizing by Lisa in Sioux Falls

1

Best tips on Organizing for the Holidays?

• Keep a calendar. It really works! List holiday events and activities, parties, concerts; if you have kids, write their events, such as church programs and practices, car pool schedules.

• If you’re hosting a party or meal – make a meal plan in advance and write down your menu and timeline for food preparation.

• Always shop your own kitchen first.

Check expiration dates. A lot of people have so much food in their cupboard already, so look at your favorite recipes, then see what you’ve got in your cupboards, then go to the grocery store.

• Assemble all ingredients before you start baking. If you’re making cookies, pull

out every ingredient before you start making it.

12 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2015

2

How to Shop for Gifts?

• M ake a list of everyone you have to buy gifts for. Do you really have to buy for everyone? Maybe other

than the kids, you don’t have to exchange gifts. Or try a “Secret Santa” this year where you exchange names in a hat.

• Write down your budget. Stick to it. Enough said.

3

• When getting out the totes with decorations and knickknacks, make sure to dust surfaces before you display them. • Remember less is more, when decorating.

Put your most cherished decorations in the room where everyone will be spending the most time. Maybe you can get by with a Christmas tree, a 3-foot tall nutcracker, and a few things on the mantle. If you decorate every room in the house, you can end up creating a lot of work for yourself – putting it up and taking it down.

• W hen selecting gifts for the person who has everything, consider a gift card to their favorite venue. If you buy a gift, include the gift receipt

since everyone has a different style or preference. That’s how clutter builds in our homes too – we get something, we don’t want it, but we feel we can’t throw it away as it was a gift. But if you get a gift receipt you can exchange it for something you really do want and will use.

• The Golden Rule - make it easy on yourself for the holidays. They should be fun, not stressful.

Cookie decorating events, seeing Santa, sledding in the park, spending time with people you love – that’s what it’s all about. u

• T ake advantage of sales, too but ONLY if it’s something you really like or need. Remember,

coupons can be a trap. If you get a coupon for 25% off – it’s awesome if you really need the item. Say it was a $100 item, you’re saving $25 dollars. BUT if it isn’t something you really need, you’re SPENDING $75. And that’s a gimmick a lot of people can fall for. Remember, a bargain isn’t a bargain unless you really need it.

Secrets for Decorating?

Timewasters!

Americans waste 9 million hours per day searching for misplaced items. - American Demographics Society

Cleaning professionals say that getting rid of excess clutter would eliminate 40% of the housework in an average home. - National Soap and Detergent Association

80% of the clutter in most homes is a result of disorganization, not lack of space. - American Demographics Society

CRAIG Computer Service

LOVING WHAT YOU DO

BIZ Interview

Everyone has their defining moments, the point of no return when you know you are making a life altering decision and you go for it – purely on faith and conviction. For Craig Jurczewsky, that moment came while flipping eggs and burgers… but it took him 17 years to get up the courage to do it. How did you become an entrepreneur?

I picked dandelions and mowed lawns for my Sioux Falls neighbors when I was 8, and at 14 I got my first job as a cook, which lasted until I was 34. I got tired of the long unforgiving hours and missing holidays with my family. I was always working in my head, telling myself I needed to get out of that business no matter what it took.

How did get started in Computers?

They were a hobby of mine – I was passionate about computers and customer service. I’ve been big on customer service since I picked my first dandelion and made sure I got all the roots. I applied for a position as a software trainer with a local nonprofit, and that turned into setup and repair of computers, they had 7 computers when I started and ten years “I learned at a young later when I quit I age that making someone was setting up and maintaining 350 happy – going above and computers almost beyond their expectations – single handedly.

will bring you a customer for life and pay off in the end. – Craig Jurczewsky

At the same time, I was freelancing nights repairing computers and offering tech support to pay bills. On the job training and

self-taught – that’s what prepared me to become an entrepreneur. The hours were crazy but forgiving. By forgiving I mean it was my passion, I loved it.

What traits are helping you succeed? Giving good customer service, attention to detail, being personable. The key is to build trust and confidence so they know they called the right guy. In fact, I called myself “the computer guy” for 11 years before founding CRAIG Computer Service in 2008.

How do you handle a high tech world where everything is always changing?

It’s a challenge – some people are afraid to move to new technology and others sit on the sidelines waiting for the perfect software that never comes and they miss out. When a new problem arises, I have to find a solution quickly. I pride myself on staying up to date.

What’s ahead? The move to cloud based services

and data storage as a norm; security and platform availability are critical. The industry is moving away from locally stored files. continued...

BIZ Interview

How do you set yourself apart from competitors? One of the keys to my success, 18 years in business, is my focus on customer service, especially house calls, including weekends and some holidays. My motto is “fast, fair, and friendly”. High quality and making sure customer expectations are met over and above is really important to me. My employees have to supply the exact same service I do, as there’s no room for errors in this business.

What habits have helped make you successful? I have an incredible dedication to my

customers, people call me a workaholic, but I really WANT to help people make their lives better. It’s not about the paycheck, it’s service and helping to make someone’s life better. I learned at a young age – making someone happy, going above and beyond their expectations – will bring you a customer for life and pay off in the end.

Tips from Craig on Starting a Business • If you know you have a valuable service or idea, jump in head first and don’t hesitate. And don’t quit. As humans, a

bad experience can bother us all week and make us doubt ourselves. Learn from a mistake, don’t let it happen twice, and don’t let it stop you, move on.

• Follow your gut and make the jump. I

wish I would have had the foresight and confidence in myself, but I was afraid to quit the day job with benefits. I was scared and it held me back 17 years too long.

• Build support networks. I tried to do it all How did you raise the money to start your business? I’ve always been self-supporting. I never

bought anything I couldn’t afford, so I had the money saved to start the venture. I didn’t want the risk of a loan.

What is your marketing strategy?

My orange pens, of course! And BizNOW magazine, and a few other forms of advertising. I started giving customers business cards with a few of my now famous orange CRAIG Computer pens as a thank you, and encouraged them to tell their friends and pass out the pens. That strategy has been tremendously successful to the point where the pens now have their own FB page! People post photos of my pens in different places around the world – and in creative ways! Expert ADVICE ...ON TOPICS

Health

Q

Beyond basic coverage, how can value-added services benefit my employees? A key goal for all health insurance carriers is to better understand the needs of members and to make it easier to access health care, particularly since establishing a relationship with a primary care provider is key to longterm wellness. Some providers now offer virtual visits, at no charge to their insured groups or individual plan members. A virtual visit can save an office visit cost and still advise people on remedies they can do at home for simple issues such as colds, flu or pink eye. It saves the clinics valuable resources, and it saves the individual time and money. These services are available 24/7 via laptop, computer or smartphone, and breaks down a huge barrier to health care by providing easy access to medical assistance. Not only is this a cost savings to the individual, but also to the company by providing faster recovery, fewer sick days and it decreases lost productivity.

Technology

Q

Do filing cabinets take up too much space in your office? Across almost any industry, the quantity of stored documents is increasing every year. While it is important to be meticulous with business records, the sheer volume of paper can become overwhelming. Document Management Software streamlines the process of filing and retrieving your documents, positively impacting your bottom line. When documents arrive at your office, they can be quickly scanned in using barcode technology. It also improves your customer service by having any document easily accessible when your client calls, whether you are in the office or working remotely. If a vendor can make your document handling more efficient, improve your bottom line and simultaneously enhance document security, what would it save you?

Insurance

Q

What are my commercial casualty insurance options other than traditional insurance?

There are multiple options to finance (insure) your risk other than the traditional insurance methods. One of the fastest growing options is Captive Insurance programs. A captive insurance program is an alternative method to buy your general liability, auto, and workers compensation coverages Captive programs have many benefits which include underwriting income, best practices, and control. While historically captive programs have been for businesses with premiums above 300K, there are now captive programs for businesses in the 100 – 300K premium range. Captive programs allow you the opportunity to lower your costs of insurance well below what the traditional markets can deliver upon good risk management practices. Captive insurance programs can be a perfect solution for the small to medium size business.

S THAT MATTER TO YOU Outdoors

Q

Would you like to make a living doing what you’re passionate about? I believe that anyone can live the American Dream by doing what they love. I’m living my dream as a Hall of Fame professional angler and business consultant. The first step in achieving your dream is to set goals and visualize where you want to be in 1 year, 5 years, and 10 years. Crystalize that vision by writing your goals out and find pictures that depict you achieving them. If we do not know where we are going, we’ll never get there. Secondly, be the best at what you do. Work hard to perfect your skills at your job or your hobby. No one wants to look up to someone who is second best. Third, break your goal down into smaller, achievable steps. Accomplishing those small steps will eventually lead to ultimate happiness and prosperity.

Political

Q

The future of drones for SD: What future legislation do you think is needed? Drones are no longer just for hobbyists. Forward-thinking businesses across the gamut are using the technology to accelerate the speed of commerce, reach even the most remote customers, and capture a bird's eye view of everything from real estate opportunities to crops. Innovation must work hand-in-hand, however, with safety and privacy. With input from the public and private sectors, safety and privacy can be achieved while leaving room for innovation. The FAA, with strong congressional oversight, will need to work quickly and transparently so as not to jeopardize potential growth opportunities, airspace safety or privacy.

Political

Q

The future of drones for SD: What future legislation do you think is needed? The use of drones for agriculture is already here to stay. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International estimated that drones will create more than 34,000 manufacturing jobs and 70,000 new jobs in the United States in the next three years, with an economic impact of more than $13.6 billion, growing to more than 100,000 jobs and $82 billion by 2025. Agriculture is expected to make up 80 percent of the potential market for drones in the near term, according to the report. This growth is most likely to increase once the FAA finalizes regulations, but that ruling is expected late in 2016. As with most technology, as the cycle continues, costs will decrease and usage will increase. The sky’s the limit…in this case that’s both literally and figuratively true.

LEARNING TO

LOVE YOUR LIFE

If you need support or clarity in making your life work, an empowerment coach can help. We are all born to be leaders… whether you’re an executive, an entrepreneur, a teacher, a mom – or any combination of these, whatever you are, you deserve to have a life of passion and fulfillment. Ivanna Kusijanovic, Life and Business Coach at Queen Life by Design, Sioux Falls says that whether it’s through one-on-one mentoring or group sessions, coaching can help you figure out where you’re going, what you need to let go of, and what you need to attract into your life to help you find success.

A Life Coach Talks about Finding your Passion

Why did you want to be a life coach? I was

stuck in a relationship that wasn’t making me happy, and emotionally unable to make the decision to stay or leave. Without any support, it took me 5 years to get the courage to move ahead with the divorce! Women need to talk about situations – and a coach can help them decide if they want to make it work or to end it. continued...

taker at heart; he was not. I wanted to focus on career change and business startup. So I went to a life and business coach. The longer you stay in that type of situation, the smaller you become… it gets to a point where you think, I couldn’t last 20 years like that, but you stay. But you become smaller and smaller as a person, you lose your fire. You settle. But you’re dying inside.

“I can choose either to be a victim of the world or an adventurer in search of treasure. It’s all a question of how I view my life.”

Can you give an example of a success story? Sure, one woman I’ve been coaching through

Skype – our sessions are in Spanish - she wanted to start a business and ended up taking advantage of an opportunity teaching in a university. It took her awhile to see that it was actually a great opportunity for her; she’s been very successful in a short time, and now she has the confidence necessary to move forward and is working to launch her business.

What are some reasons someone might use a life coach? Leaving a marriage,

increasing your self-confidence, establishing work/life balance, because you feel stuck in a rut or you want to start a business. A big one is career change; you might be well-established in your career but want to leave, and it’s scary.

What kind of training does a life coach need? As

of now, coaching is not regulated, but the International Coaching Association is advocating for certification. Coaching is the 2nd fastest growing industry in the US, after technology! I’d say the most important thing to look for in a coach is someone that has been through what you’re going through – if you’re starting a business, you want to find a coach who started a business. If you’re looking to leave a marriage, you want to find someone who did that. I work in the areas of helping with divorce, single-parenting, career change or major life move – such as moving out of the country, which I did.

Do a lot of women get paralyzed when making the decision to divorce? Yes, often women feel guilty.

Maybe there wasn’t anything specific that went wrong – no abuse, no cheating – but they just weren’t fulfilled. So there can be guilt about going forward to follow your heart.

What was your defining moment when you knew for sure your marriage was over? We were arguing

and screaming one night, and I remember a neighbor actually called the police. Then I realized the effect that this was having on my children. We had stopped bringing out the best in each other.

What made you finally able to leave, after 5 years of waffling? It started with me taking a step of faith trying to invest in myself and my future. I wanted to buy a house for us to live in instead of renting, and I wanted to buy rental property – and he wasn’t on board. I was a risk22 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2015

Do our beliefs really create the conditions of our life? Yes. But the good thing is, it’s never too late to change your beliefs, and you’re never too old to change.

What kind of coaching sessions are available?

Coaches offer different programs to fit different needs and budgets, so check around when you’re consider hiring a coach. I do 3-month packages via phone or Skype which includes a weekly call for an hour, email support, plus access to our Facebook group. The FB group offers unique perspectives on problem solving, and many of the universal challenges we experience– love that ends, a job that’s unfulfilling, balancing family and career. I also offer a much more focused workshop – “1 Day Intensives” – which are luxury 1-day retreats in exotic locales. I create a program specifically tailored to the client. Then we do a very intensive retreat, but in a luxury setting. It’s one-on-one personalized coaching. After the weekend, they get a follow-up call to hold them accountable to their commitments.

Why do you go to an exotic location? It gets you

out of your everyday habitat and routine, allowing you to see possibilities and grow. I want my clients to “up level” their lives. That’s why they are staying at luxurious retreats – so they know they can accomplish anything on their own. They can create a new life that includes abundance and fulfillment.

How does the Facebook group complement your coaching? I’ve started “theme days” for the FB group, like ‘Diversity Monday --where we talk about what you’re doing to understand other’s perspectives; Evolution Tuesdays – what are you doing to evolve? Books your reading, classes you’re attending; Empowerment Wednesdays – for that, I ask the group to share “wins” and celebrate triumphs; Physical Thursdays – we focus on well-being, what are you doing to achieve that goal?; Gratitude Fridays – what are we thankful for; Trivia Saturday and Family Fun Sunday. I have clients

store; now I won’t have food spoiling. (laughs) That’s a positive mindset.

Why can’t family or friends fulf ill the role of a ‘coach’? Friends and family will usually let you sit and

I use mantras to help train my mind – you take your negative sentences ‘I always, I never’ and you take that same sentence and turn it into a positive. Before you go to bed, put post-its of affirmations all over your mirror. Visualize what you want to come true, and post it where you can see it. Gratefulness and being positive will train your mind to attract more positive experiences. If you focus on the negative, your mind goes out and actively seeks that. There’s always challenges in life; everyone can benefit from coaching at some point in their lives. u

whine, they won’t hold you accountable. A coach will hold you accountable.

Can’t people get coaching through the church?

The church has support but it might not be as customized to an individual; also there can be pressure in a religious setting to conform to certain behaviors, and sometimes you don’t want the church or your friends and family knowing what you’re really struggling with– you can be more honest in talking to a third party like a coach.

Quotes can be a powerful tool in a coaching toolkit. What’s your favorite quote? ‘It’s not

the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It’s the one that is most adaptable to change.’ – Charles Darwin.

How important is self-talk? You can train your mind to focus on the positive in any situation. For example, when the power went out in my neighborhood, some people focused on the negative, thinking, why does this happen to me? I thought, I’m so lucky that I didn’t get to the grocery

EMPLOYEE OR A CONTRACTOR?

Many startups use independent contractors instead of employees, but courts are starting to say they are indeed employees. Is the work cental to your operation, assigned and expected to be completed on-demand and with quality controls, or do you negotiate each project with your contractor? Do the people you need require training ‘in a particular method or manner’ or can you rely on them to perform their professional service without guidance? Who supplies the tools and equipment? The IRS considers teaching and assignments as signs that you have a W-2 employee, not a 1099 independent contractor. Homejoy, an on-demand home cleaning service in California was forced to reclassify its ‘freelance’ cleaners as employees. The lawsuit shut down the $40 million enterprise. Employees will cost a company an additional 20 to 30% in Social Security and Medicare deductions, workers comp, vacation, sick pay, and insurance alone. Add in the new Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), retirement, and other benefits, and it is easy to see why more and more companies are looking to move toward independent contractors. Uber, the on-demand taxi dispatcher, is currently the world’s most valuable startup at $50 billion and relies on independent contractors. Lyft,a rival to Uber, and TaskRabbit which dispatches people to run errands and perform odd jobs along with $2 billion grocery delivery service Instacart each is built on the contractor model and are under scrutiny. Criticism comes from labor unions who want to see lifelong guarantees and pensions for these workers. Business entrepreneurs say they are taking a huge risk with their startups and simply could not afford the overhead of employees. They also feel they are providing opportunity and options where there was none. Given the low or no skill required of on demand and part time work, contractor status should be permissible, they argue. In July, the Department of Labor issued guidelines to clarify the differences between employee and freelancer, and they are not favorable toward the new digital economic model of independent freelancer’s. As a result, Zirtual, a startup providing virtual online assistants, was forced out of business.

Seek legal counsel and professional advice with your business model to see which is right for your startup. Contact your state representative to voice your opinion on contingent labor laws and encourage a middle ground so our workforce can choose for themselves.

• By 2020, the number of on-demand jobs is projected to reach 7.6 million. • W orkers like flexible hours and the ‘gig’ economy is attracting highly skilled and highly paid professionals such as programmers, physicians and lawyers.

FINDING

Smart BIZ

by Biz Staff

AFTER 35

Dating is a different game as you move through the thirties and beyond. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind … and to help you find love at any age, and every age. Where can I meet people in their 40s and 50s?

Everyone assumes that it’s difficult to meet people because they don’t know where to look, but after 35, it comes down to this – you just have to use a few different strategies. For example, try online dating, ask friends who they know, go to new groups and clubs that interest you, spend time in bookstores or coffee shops, attend community and sports events.

How can I make sure I don’t come across as desperate? People can smell desperation, so tone it down

a bit. Ask a friend what you do that appears needy – such as talking too much about being lonely or needing a parent for the kids. Remember to relax and enjoy the search for a date. Just get to know people. Not everyone will be your true love, but they might end up being a true friend.

What are the chances of finding love in my 40s or 50s? Your chances are as good as the effort you put into

meeting someone. If you put 100 percent effort in, then your chances will be 100 percent. But many people only put in a 25 percent effort. While we all have commitments and busy lives, make room in your life for dating and make it a priority, focus on every activity you can think of to bring new friends and love into your life.

How can we compete with younger people in the dating scene? No need to! Your goal is to be the

best YOU that you can be, whatever age you are. Sure, that has to do somewhat with looks – you may want to freshen up your hairstyle, tone up and lose a few pounds, or toss the old baggy jeans. But it really has more to do with attitude. A person with positive energy and passion for life draws others to them. Make a list of all your fabulous traits – what makes you special? What do you do well? Celebrate who you are. If you feel great about yourself, you’ll project a confident and happy image. And that attracts people wherever you go, at any stage of your life.

Smart BIZ And now, a few golden rules for searches online:

Broaden your age and location limits. It may seem

important to pick someone who is close in age to you and lives nearby, but when you think about it, does it really matter if they’re 45 or 47? Adding just a year lots of ideal-mate criteria in the hope of finding your or two extra on that criteria search can perfect soulmate, but it’s a better plan to establish give you access to people who often get just a few absolutes – like you want a man who overlooked. As far as location, will you likes kids or a woman who doesn’t smoke, and Your goal is to be really pass up all those fabulous people leave the other categories blank. You’ll get a who live a few miles outside your 50broader range of people, without having to the best YOU that you mile radius? Or someone who may compromise on the big stuff. Remember, can be, whatever age you are.... be perfect for you but lives just over most happy couples don’t exactly fit their a person with positive energy the state border? Your best strategy partner’s mold perfectly. After all, if you’re is to keep a wide range of options. both exactly alike, one of you is redundant. and passion for life draws

dates by demanding they be slender, you are automatically rejecting 60% of the American population! And when it comes to height, many women want a man who’s 6 foot tall, but that limits you to about 15% of guys in the US! Flex a little – and you might meet someone who measures up in every other way – and who you grow to be attracted to.

Get out there and meet people. Don’t get discouraged. Try

churches, charities, volunteering, theatre, seminars, network events, online dating sites, classes in everything from cooking to jazz dance to social media. It’s a big playground out there. Go out and enjoy life. That’s the best way to meet Mr. or Ms. Right. u

Compassion CHILD CARE Every parent dreams of providing a stable, positive environment for their children to learn and grow. Unfortunately, for many working families the cost of quality childcare, or any childcare for that matter, can cause significant financial hardship with negative short term and long-term consequences. This challenge is what has motivated the creators of Compassion Child Care (CCC) to offer an innovative new daycare opportunity. Compassion Child Care provides a licensed childcare program in Sioux Falls. They encourage the children's holistic growth through play-based and child-centered activities. They also aim to develop the children's social skills, emotional growth, and physical coordination in a Christian environment. CCC offers part and full-time programs and is the childcare ministry of the Ministry Center located downtown. Partnering with low-income working families, CCC is able to offer sliding-scale fees for working families that are struggling to make ends meet.

Rooted in Christianity, their spirit of innovation is seen through their efforts to address the needs of families in a variety of ways. CCC recognizes the need to end the cycle of poverty. Childcare can cost up to 40% of a family’s take-home pay. For many working families this is an unaffordable expense, and they do not qualify for government-assisted childcare. To close this gap CCC supports these families by relieving the financial burden of childcare and assisting those who want to move towards self-sufficiency. Barry Termaat, who has been on the Board of Directors since the program’s inception, says, “Our system is a lot different from [other systems]. It’s a graduated system. We have seen families who have started in what the government would consider poverty move up and out of that situation.” CCC gives families the ability to dream about something bigger. “We want anyone who comes into our daycare, whether they make $500 a year, or $500,000, to think, ‘Wow, I would really love for my kids to be here,’” says Dawson Muska, Director of Development at Compassion Child Care. “I feel like when I drop my baby off here that I am dropping my baby off at my mother’s house,” says Freedom, a parent of a child at Compassion Child Care. “I love this place.” CCC offers a housing program for single mothers. takes a holistic approach to helping families. This program provides affordable housing to single mothers who use the daycare. It promotes stability and consistency in the lives of families. “The heart behind this program is to allow for a year of rejuvenation,” Muska says. “For mothers who are burned out and tired, this is a place to feel safe and secure.” Resident assistants live on site and provide social reinforcement through mentorship, bible studies and support during difficult times. CCC places a high priority on these mentor relationships. When parents qualify for the daycare, they are required take resource classes to develop a customized financial plan, promote autonomy and take a step forward in their life. CCC is one of many ministries housed within the same building. This set-up promotes collaboration between likeminded non-profits. The tenants of the Ministry Center operate individually but offer support for each other by sharing referrals and resources. CCC is able to refer families to housing assistance, counseling, a clothing bank, and an after-hours medical clinic, all within one location. “If we learn there is substance abuse, we can hold their hand and take them to a location where they can get help” Muska says. That location just happens to be upstairs. The close proximity of services, along with CCC’s heart for collaboration, helps with the follow-through process, allowing families the ability to receive help immediately. LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE

NOW!

When we think about living our best life, it comes down to living a “fruitful” life. One of the greatest challenges we face as leaders is the ability to stay focused on life’s priorities. For most, taking care of our mental, spiritual and physical health tends to be put on hold. Daily behaviors will eventually affect our quality of life. When we set goals we look into the future (the unknown). When we fail we tend to look at our past. Both can create a feeling of anxiety. But being present is living in faith. And when we are truly present we become clear on our priorities. So how can we change our behavior to being present? First, we need to know our opponent. The enemy has plenty of tools in his box like envy, greed, control. But the Bible provides “the antidote” -- described as: truth, wisdom, grace, love, and life. When you’re in His presence, there is no fear! And when you choose to spend time in prayer you feel this sense of renewal and peace. Most of the time our goals are focused on external things: such as having more money, being in a loving relationship or desiring to be in better physical shape. You may think if you reach one or all of these goals you will find happiness. But lasting happiness only comes from within by seeking love, joy, and peace, known as fruits of the Holy Spirit. Think about a time when you experienced Joy. Maybe you held your child for the first time and you were so overwhelmed with joy, that you had a smile

and a tear at the same time. Well, in that moment of joy nothing else exists. We can harness more of these “fruitful” moments by spending consistent time with God. Who doesn’t want to experience more love, joy and peace in their life? Live your best life NOW and in turn, your fruits will radiate into the lives of others! u
