: 3FROM STEPS TO GROWTH SETBACK TO COMEBACK! Let’s face it, life always throws a few curveballs. For some of us, it’s more than a few! But the secret is to get back up again. No matter what you’re going through, here are 3 steps that can help you turn that setback around:

1. Don’t panic. No matter what happened, it’s not the

© Hannah Parker Photography

end of the world. If you panic, you can’t make the best decision, you shoot from the hip. When the stock market crashed in 1929, people panicked and some even killed themselves. Yet the market did come back, and in fact, investors have since made money! So the point here is, no matter what’s happened, take a moment, relax, and tell yourself that you’ll get through it. Successful people know that setbacks are a part of business. They don’t focus on the setbacks, they learn from them and figure out the next plan.

2. Find your Vision. What you focus on in life

determines where you’ll go. It charts the course. So if you’ve lost your vision, find it again. Focus your energy on what you want your business to become. Ask yourself, What’s the long term vision I have for my business? Where do I want it to go in the next year, 5 years? And what can I do differently to keep this setback from happening again? What can I learn from this?

3. G et Going. You aren’t responsible for getting knocked down, but you are responsible

for getting back up. So take action. Many business people have great plans, but they never act on them. Only those who make a decision and take action will get to their goals. How badly do you want your business to succeed, and what are you willing to do to get there? Set those goals, and then write down the steps you need to do to make it happen. And then, just do it.

Remember, both success and failure are just decisions. As Tony Robbins puts it, “Successful people choose to be successful.” No matter the setback, they choose to prevail. They get back in the game. If you’re afraid to leave first base, you’ll never get to second! So relax, find your vision, and get moving again. You have a destiny to fulfill.

BIZ Q&A commercial, and residential. I think that two areas have particular significance. First, the new interchange at 85th Street and I-29 opens up approximately 2,000 acres for new commercial, light industrial and residential development. Kudos go to Lincoln County, the South Dakota Department of Transportation, and private landowners and developers for their innovative partnership to construct the interchange. Next, the area surrounding the University Center in northwest Sioux Falls is already seeing substantial interest with a new Walmart, apartments, and the announcement of the USD Discovery District. The entire spectrum of development is represented, ranging from research to residential. This area is destined to see continued growth.

LATE BREAKING NEWS from the Governor:

“Education is an ongoing topic of discussion in our state, as it should be. I believe we have three policy goals for education in South Dakota: First, we want a quality system of schools focused on student achievement. Second, we want a workforce of great educators. Finally, we want an efficient, equitable funding system that supports those goals. That’s why I’m joining with legislative leaders to create a Blue Ribbon Task Force on Teachers and Students. This task force will reevaluate the current education funding formula by collecting and analyzing data, engaging with stakeholders, and seeking public input. The task force will then make recommendations to the 2016 State Legislature for reform. Three years ago, I joined with the Chief Justice and legislative leaders to initiate a year-long review of the criminal justice system. That process took on a difficult issue and resulted in a sweeping reform package that passed with broad support. This year, the Legislature is considering a similar reform package of the juvenile justice system, which is also the product of a year-long process. Now we are bringing that same successful process to the issue of school funding. South Dakotans want a quality education for every student, and we want great teachers to provide that education. Through this process, we can gain confidence that our state funding system is focused on achieving these important goals.”

interview by Charlotte Hofer

Exclusive with the Governor

UNSTOPPABLE SD Gov. Dennis Daugaard talked with Biz Editor Charlotte Hofer about the state’s exciting growth path. Encouraging entrepreneurship is close to his heart. In this exclusive interview, Gov. Daugaard shares what’s ahead for SD to keep entrepreneurs here, and to bring back those who have left. As “South Dakota’s #1 Salesman,” he promotes our state as a great place to expand and to open new businesses. According to the Governor, more exciting growth is just ahead!

SD WORKFORCE INITIATIVE Gov. Daugaard, can you give our readers a progress update on the workforce initiative? Charlotte, last month, we awarded nearly $1 million in matching funds to help communities across the state take an active role in addressing their own workforce issues. Those who applied for the grants offered community-specific ideas and innovative plans to meet local workforce needs in areas such as housing, internships, certification and training programs, and English as a Second Language classes. The grants were awarded to 14 different entities. 12 | BizNOWmagazine.com | March 2015

What is the Governor’s office doing to entice new business or encourage expansion of local business? That is the constant and focused effort of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED). South Dakota has the fourth highest percentage of entrepreneurs at 16.14% compared to the national average, 12.69%, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

BIZ Exclusive GOED continues to promote South Dakota to potential new businesses by attending 4 to 5 trade shows a year and the agency offers a flexible loan program, a certified ready sites program and an aggressive retention and expansion program.

GROWTH What are the target industries we’re trying to attract and their impact on the state’s GDP?

reasonable, and people around the nation are beginning to notice. For example, the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council ranks South Dakota as the number 1 business climate for entrepreneurship. In addition to maintaining a business friendly climate, GOED sponsors the Governor’s Giant Business Plan Competition which is conducted annually in collaboration with the SD Chamber of Commerce and is open to any entrepreneurs locating their business in South Dakota. GOED is focused on 6 key industries: Value-Added Ag; Professional Business Services; Financial Services; Bioscience/ Biotechnology; Shooting, Hunting & Outdoors (SHOT); and Oil & Gas. Also, as manufacturing is a mainstay of South Dakota’s economy, we work closely with this industry as well. The financial services industry has been a growth industry for South Dakota since the 1980s. Today it accounts for 24% of South Dakota’s GDP, the largest single industry component of our economy. The manufacturing industry as a whole accounts for 9% of the state’s GDP, with value added ag or food processing being a key component of this industry. And, production ag continues to be a core industry for the state, making up 14% of our GDP.

ENTREPRENEURS Gov. Daugaard, what is the state doing to encourage those who have left South Dakota to come back and bring their business here? South Dakota has a very competitive business climate, Charlotte. Our tax burden is low and our regulations are

A PERSONAL INSIGHT FROM THE GOVERNOR: “I learned many important life lessons from my parents. My parents were both born deaf, but they did not allow that to deter them or define them. They farmed for years, but when things weren’t going well financially, they had to sell the livestock and equipment. My parents didn’t use their deafness as an excuse. They picked themselves up and took jobs as janitors at Augustana, driving fifty miles every day to work. They taught me the meaning of hard work and that all work has dignity.” – Gov. Dennis Daugaard

UNSTOPPABLE FUNDING How does SD government connect entrepreneurs with the funding they need? Whether it’s funding for machinery, land or construction, workforce training or otherwise, we have funds available. For more on our low-interest financing programs, visit sdreadytowork. com/finance. For example, through the SD Business Accelerator program and other assistance programs, GOED introduces and connects entrepreneurs to the network of angel investors and formal venture capital firms in South Dakota to raise capital. In the last 5 years, angel investors have invested $3.1 million and venture capital investors have invested $25 million in early stage and high growth businesses in South Dakota.

Can you comment on the Build Dakota Scholarship program announced in December? It’s a full-tuition scholarship for students entering highneed workforce programs at in-state technical schools. The program is being funded by $25 million of state dollars and another $25 million from T. Denny Sanford. Applicants need to study in a high-need workforce area, and demonstrate financial need and aptitude. After graduation, they commit to work 3 years in their field of study in South Dakota. Students from out-of-state are also eligible to apply. Applications are due April 15. Apply at doe.sd.gov/ builddakota. u

“I appreciate BizNOW Magazine because it’s aimed at the aspiring entrepreneur and the seasoned businessman. It’s a publication for our job creators that tells the stories of success and innovation that are occurring right here in our state.” – SD Governor Dennis Daugaard

Just recently, the state provided a $3 million grant to the Sioux Falls Development Foundation for their investment in a young South Dakota biotech company.

MARKETING How are we marketing SD to businesses and other countries? I’ve led three trade missions to China. Several of the local companies that joined me on those trade missions have entered into contracts with Chinese companies. We are also working with some international companies we connected with at the trade shows we attend. 14 | BizNOWmagazine.com | March 2015

LAWYERS NEEDED! Rural areas in South Dakota are finding themselves without legal assistance as more opportunity exists in the metropolitan areas. Even though law school graduates are without jobs, the demand for services is not enough to entice them into the rural areas.

Although nearly a fifth of South Dakota’s population lives in rural areas, they are served by just 2% of law firms.

Iowa showed interest in the SD model because 33 of its counties have fewer than 4% of the state’s lawyers.

When Fredric Cozad retired in 2013, he was the last working lawyer in Bennett County, SD. There used to be half a dozen, now there is not a working attorney for 120 miles.

In 2012, the Iowa State Bar Association began encouraging law students to spend summers in rural areas, hoping they might put down roots and in 2013 the Nebraska bar organized rural bus tours for law students. Aside from deeds, wills, sales and disputes, other legal matters require legal aid, such as drugs, divorce, and crime.

South Dakota’s chief justice, David E. Gilbertson noted in a NY Times article that “we face the very real possibility of whole sections of this state being without access to legal services.” In South Dakota, 65% of lawyers live in four urban areas. Iowa, Nebraska, Georgia, Arizona and Texas face similar situations. The American Bar Association has called on Federal, state and local governments to help in rural areas. South Dakota was the first to respond by offering lawyers an annual subsidy to live and work in rural areas, much like the national program that has subsidized doctors, nurses and dentists for decades. They will set up lawyers with mentors and even help spouses find work.

Launched the summer of 2013, the new law requires a 5-year commitment from the applicant who will receive an annual subsidy and reduction of tuition from a qualifying SD law school – for example, a student attending USD Law School will get a subsidy of $12,000 and a 90% reduction in the cost of a year's tuition. Research had shown that medical residents who trained in rural settings were two to three times more likely than urban graduates to practice in rural areas. The hope is that lawyers will follow suit. u

! South Dakota: a Paralegal’s paradise? Five hundred paralegals work in South Dakota, according to the 2011 employment survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Paralegals represent nearly 1/3rd of all legal professionals in the state. In South Dakota, paralegals must work under the direct supervision of an attorney who also accepts responsibility for their professional conduct. A recent survey showed Paralegal salaries in SD ranged from $17,000 to $52,000 depending on the type of law practiced. Aspiring paralegals may earn certificates or degrees in paralegal studies. Currently, there are associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs available in paralegal studies. Degree programs offer a mix of specialized coursework in paralegal studies and general education classes.

Health

Q

hat can I do to lower W my group’s health insurance costs?

In an environment of increased healthcare costs, wellness programs are a key solution to not only manage costs, but lower overall insurance premiums. Nearly 70-90% of healthcare spending is caused by health issues that are modifiable and preventable, and because most adults spend more of their waking hours at work than anywhere else, implementing programs to improve overall well-being will enable employees to become healthier. As a result of healthier employees, overall healthcare costs are reduced.

Finance

Q

How do you create financial wealth?

Compound interest. Albert Einstein called it “the most powerful force in the universe”. It’s the antithesis of “get rich quick”. It requires time, patience, and discipline. Most importantly, it requires the avoidance of permanent loss of capital.

In addition to lowered costs, employee wellness programs also:

Many think wealth is generated by hitting homeruns but forget the cost of striking out. Most wealth is generated by years of compounding and the execution of a disciplined investment program driven by fundamental analysis, not emotion.

• • • • • •

It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, “It requires a great deal of boldness and a great deal of caution to make a great fortune, and when you have it, it requires ten times as much skill to keep it.”

Decreased rates of illness and injuries Reduced employee absenteeism Improved employee relations and morale Increased productivity Increased overall well-being E nhanced recruitment and retention of healthy employees

Consider implementing a disease prevention and wellness program to lower your healthcare costs.

Q

How do you view committing to and achieving goals?

The truth is, our life is a culmination of our habits, both good and bad. It is the habit that helps us succeed or fail. Some people say it takes 21 days to create or change a habit; others think it takes longer before it’s solidified. Actually, one can change their habit immediately if they commit to it and remind themselves of it daily. It’s important to have a clear idea of the outcome, a plan to act on it, and keen awareness of both action and progress.

Biz Staff Reports interview by Jessica Newell

OBSESSIONS OF THE WEALTHY:

HOW THE GREAT INVESTORS MADE THEIR FORTUNES The great Investors. What are their secrets? How do they do it? By learning their traits and emulating their behavior, perhaps you can become one of the greats too!

The ability to make a decision without all the facts.

This trait is developed over time by understanding the market of interest and its interrelationship with related market forces. Here, knowledge truly is power. Once all the facts are known, you missed the opportunity.

To have confidence in your ability to assess a buy or sell and then act on it is critical. Most investors take aim but never pull the trigger.

Don’t lose your money.

In essence, don’t let a small loss turn into a major loss. Billionaire and hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones has made money for 28 consecutive years. He states: “The most important thing for me is that my defense is 10 times more important than offense. You have to be very focused on the downside at all times.” In practical terms, this means to set trialing stops and follow them. Consult with your financial advisor, but a 10% downslide might be a reasonable place to start based on your portfolio and personal risk tolerance.

22 | BizNOWmagazine.com | March 2015

Why Real Estate? Why NOW? Risk a little bit to make a profit.

Most investors think you have to make a “home run” risk to reap the big rewards. They look for the next “10 bagger” and ignore the lesser opportunities that will propel them forward at a slower but less risky pace. One investment strategy the wealthy use is to make asymmetric bets. Use your knowledge to make the best bet possible, then take a contrarian view and make a minor investment of 10%. Hedging your potential winner with an opposing investment will help to minimize your downside risk.

UNDER CONTRACT IN 20 DAYS! Let me show you how I can get your home SOLD!

There’s never been a better time to buy than now. I work with phenomenal people with an attitude of gratitude, who share each other’s knowledge. That’s why Keller Williams is No. 1 in the industry.

Why me?

• Professionalism – My clients come first in every transaction. • Sioux Falls Native – I know what Sioux Falls has to offer, and I will match that with the needs of you and your family. •W ork ethic – I have a true Midwestern work ethic. My day doesn’t end until you are happy. • Ambition – I won't stop until your goal is met. • Environment – Keller Williams gives me a distinct advantage in working with you through state of the art technology.

Preserve and Grow Your Gains

Once an investment has gained 50%, cash out your initial investment and let the balance work for you if all signs remain positive. Reinvest your base in another venture and repeat. At some point you will want to move some money to a safer, high quality, value income portfolio.

• Long-term – I want my clients to be forever clients. I will be working for you from the day we begin until the day we close, providing the best marketing and advice possible.

Buying, selling, moving? I can help. Let’s talk.

”Remain diversified with a long-term view by buying income investments when they trade for unquestionably low valuations. From time to time, you're able to scoop up productive assets for prices that can't be passed up” says Dr. David Eifrig, editor, Income Intelligence.

Never Rest

One must stay diligent and informed. Pay attention to market forces and make appropriate adjustments. Tony Robbins, author of Money: Mastering the Game, interviewed the legends and offered this insight: “This group of achievers is never done. They are never done learning, earning, growing or giving.”

Biz adds: Do not invest more than you can afford to lose and consult with your financial advisor. u

GROUND BREAKING RESEARCH CENTER AT SDSU This past fall South Dakota State University decided to take the lead with a new Swine Education and Research Facility (SERF) in Brookings, SD. Governor Daugaard and the legislature allocated $2.03 million to the project and the board of regents committed another million. With ever growing food demands coupled with the need for clean production and efficiency, this is a multistate and interdisciplinary effort with collaborators from Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and Kansas. Research projects are expected to pull in additional grant money from soy and corn councils as well as private industry such as Ralco who donated $100,000, acknowledging the facility will help Ralco achieve its goal of providing a safe and abundant global food supply. “Pork production is the biggest consumer of soybeans in SD. About 4.2 million pigs are finished annually, consuming 275,000 tons of soybean meal” says Marc Reiner, chairman of SD Soybean Research and Promotion Council, who pledged $1 million. From 2011 to 2013 the SD swine industry grew by 12 percent. A mere 10%

additional increase in swine production will create a demand for 672,000 bushels of soybeans and 2.32 million bushels of corn annually. The research will focus on many challenges facing the industry such as feed and energy costs, animal medical and welfare trends and ways to minimize the hog aroma. With these types of improvements and the growth demand for pork products, the facility hopes to create opportunities for sustainable high technology production and for communities to welcome the industry to their communities. The swine research will also expand into related disciplines such as nutrition, reproduction physiology, engineering, herd health, plant science and nutrient management, all leading to better human health. Further expansion at SDSU will bring about a cow-calf research center, with ground breaking perhaps as early as this summer. u

And we’d like to share more about how we raise our food. Pull up a chair and visit with us. We’ll put everything on the table about how we raise healthy food.

Ditch the GPS

Real exploration begins the moment you turn off your GPS. Use those first few weekends to get lost. Make it your mission to find lunch without using Yelp! Your favorite burger joint, gift shop, or park could be one you’d never have found otherwise.

Sound like a broken record

Start saying “hi” everywhere you go. Use “I’m new in town, what do you recommend…” as frequently as possible. Everyone you meet while running errands knows more about your city than you do – let them be an expert! You’d be surprised how interested people will be in learning more about you, why you moved, and connecting you with resources. Just remember, the “I’m new in town… last year” introduction has less sparkle, so don’t hold off on chatting up the locals.

SIOUX FALLS YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS GROUP

Chelsea Tracy, owner of Chelsea’s Boutique, knew there were several networking groups in the area but saw a need to encourage young entrepreneurs. In February she founded the Sioux Falls Young Entrepreneurs Meetup group.

“I know that if I am having a problem as a business owner, that five other people have gone through the same thing,” Tracy explains. “This new group is more than just a networking meetup – it’s aimed at making friendships and creating a support system for all the members.” The group is intended for young entrepreneurs under 40 who want to connect with other entrepreneurs on a social level. They meet every two weeks on Wednesday nights at 5 pm for either a Social Hour or Breakout Session. “We’re hoping to bring in people from different industries to give presentations that will help grow our businesses,” says Tracy. The meetings give them an opportunity to network, share ideas, and even challenges. “While we are still ramping up, our first meeting was a social hour and a huge hit with 40 people attending. We have now grown to over 70 members,” says Tracy. 28 | BizNOWmagazine.com | March 2015

Chelsea started her business at the age of 20 in Chamberlain, South Dakota. Fresh from college and with the help of her parents she was ready to take on the world. “I think I would be more afraid to start a business now that I am older,” she says. Her advice to anyone on the border of entrepreneurship is “Just go for it. Take the rest and give it all you have.” For more information, visit meetup.com/Sioux-Falls-YoungEntrepreneur-Meetup/ or connect with them on Facebook. u

PROFILE OF AN ENTREPRENEUR:

3 Must-Have Traits!

If you’re dreaming of starting your own business, great! To see how you fit the profile of an entrepreneur, here are 3 traits exhibited by successful moguls: They don’t see Defeat.

Successful entrepreneurs don’t see defeat; they see the opportunity for success. Starting and running a business takes gumption, it takes perseverance; sometimes it just takes blind faith. You know there will be bumps in the road, so plan on it. That can include anything from finding a loan to finding the right team to work with you. But know too that there will be joys that are in direct proportion to the challenges – the excitement of running your own business; the thrill of that first sale; the satisfaction of seeing your idea pay off! When tough times come, refining your business plan can help; seeking a mentor can help too. And sometimes, just hanging in there when times are tough can make all the difference between the business that stays around and the one that could have made it.

In the end remember, many new businesses fail, and the best lessons are often learned from failure. So don’t lose faith. Just get back up and try again. Your next idea may be the one that changes the world! Stephanie Laska is a Graduate Student Teaching Assistant at the University of South Dakota. She is working on a Master's Degree in English Literature.

They are Flexible.

Everything changes. Business policies change, technology changes, markets change, and in a start-up your team often changes. In order to succeed, it helps to find ways for your business to adapt to change, and even embrace it.

The trait that may be the most valuable to have is passion. Successful entrepreneurs believe in what they are doing, and communicate that passion to everyone else about why their business is such a terrific business. If you don’t, who will?

PERSONAL CONCIERGE

(PERSONALLY, IT COULD BE A GREAT CAREER!) Looking to be your own boss? Want to work from home and make your own hours? Consider the growing need for personal services. With 6,000 baby boomers reaching retirement age on a daily basis, the need for personal help is booming. These aging seniors represent 13% of the population and will need help getting through their day. With few barriers to entry, this growing field could work into a busy schedule -- either on a part or full time basis. Concierge services include: Meals: This could simply be cooking for seniors and

providing home delivery or working up a nutritional meal plan based on doctors’ orders. Senior meals are also subsidized by the Feds, so you could apply with them to be a provider on a large scale.

Shopping: Some people in need of concierge services simply can’t or don’t want to get out and do their own shopping. Whether it’s for groceries or general sundries and clothing, they are not excited about going out in inclement weather or battling traffic and crowds. If you like to shop, this is a shoe-in! Cleaning: Laundry, vacuum and windows. These chores become more difficult as arthritis sets in, and many Baby Boomers are looking to hire this out. As a young entrep, you have the energy and physical stamina to do the chores. Transportation: Trips to the doctor become more frequent and more complex as people age. Driving Miss Daisy could be fun and it will be greatly appreciated.

Medical help: Many seniors need help understanding their meds and when to take them. If you are not well versed in medical issues and uncomfortable with helping them to understand physician orders or reach decisions, then enlist the services of a Healthcare Advocate – another growing profession. Finances: Keeping the checkbook balanced and ensuring bills are paid are tasks that become tougher as people get older. In addition, scammers frequently target seniors, so you could potentially save them from losing their nest egg. As a personal concierge, you can take on as many clients as your time allows Subcontracting some services will free you up as your clients come to trust you, and you can maximize your time by bundling the shopping for several at once. Charging for your services could be on a contractual basis with duties clearly enumerated, or on a part time, as needed basis with flexibility in rates and time allocated to each client. Sometimes they just need to talk to someone or feel they are being cared for – allowing them to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. It takes a special person to provide personal care, but it can be very rewarding on all levels. u

TAKE CONTROL DO SOMETHING BOLD,

RISKY & LIFE-CHANGING! After six years of business travel almost every week, it was time for a change. Each Sunday night, my job took me away to opaque places, and rendered me a stranger to my family by Friday. We had a nice home, new cars, and savings. But I didn’t have autonomy over most of my life and I felt helpless to alter this cycle. That changed quickly when I was fired in 2006. As I searched for my next job, I also considered owning a franchise. However, most of my friends were skeptical, they felt that it was too risky and wanted me to just ‘find another job’. I became frozen with fear and indecision. It took a solitary weekend to make the terrifying decision – envisioning a future where I was happy in my life, with a vibrant marriage, and successful in my own business. I struggled with the spiritual question, what does God want us to do when confronted with the complex decisions, and resulting fears, that life presents? Out of work, and with a faltering marriage, it seemed that my courage and faith were being tested. During my sabbatical, I felt a spiritual energy compelling me to step up and lead my family on a new adventure, to be more available to them, to live transparently in front of them. It made me feel alive again to imagine doing something noble, risky, and dangerous. Win or lose, I couldn’t abdicate the decision to anyone else, so I determined to step boldly into the arena and purchase a franchise. I became a humbled new business owner, and somewhere during the journey, it became our family’s shared adventure, and my wife and I found each other again as we faced the dangers together. There are precious few

opportunities for a man to provide for his family, from his heart, mind, and soul. My wife and children were able to really get to know me, as I navigated business and family decisions from my home office. They saw me grow as a business owner, a father, and husband. This past October, we proudly “Out of work, and watched our with a faltering son become a United States marriage, it seemed Marine. I that my courage wonder and faith were being what would tested.” have resulted if I hadn’t - Scott Brennan been given the spiritual vision to make a dangerous decision and rescue my family and career? Running my business from my home allowed me to be available for my family and help raise our children as they navigated those last few critical years. I truly felt saved -- that’s how it feels to look back on my decision to start a business. We have since profitably sold our business, the children are on their own adventures, and my goal now is to help others achieve success in their lives. u Scott Brennan is a Sioux Falls Resident and Entrepreneur, with a book coming out this year, Is Your Job Killing You?
