Think beyond the box this month! Be fearless! Be daring! It could lead to new ideas, bold discoveries, brilliant inventions. It could power your business to a whole new level, bring you acclaim and fortune. It all starts with taking a risk and thinking outside the box. This month’s cover model is yoga instructor Braden Bradfield, who was willing to take a risk by holding a yoga pose upside down in a box for nearly an hour! But with grace and good nature and really strong abs, he pulled it off beautifully! Pictured above with Gabbi the Cavalier, Bradfield is also a busy entrepreneur who is launching a new business based on breeding, selling and showing dogs. Find him at braden. bradfield@gmail.com.

The HOT JOBS in 2014!
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, (BLS.gov), total employment is expected to increase by 20.5 million jobs from 2010 to 2020. The top 5 sectors that are predicted to dominate throughout the decade are: Healthcare, Personal Care/Service, Community and Social Service, Computer IT, and Construction. Pushing up job projections is the growing consumer-oriented youth labor force, and the aging baby boomer population that is creating greater demand for health services. According to Robert Half International, a Menlo Park, CA staffing firm, here are some hot opportunities for 2014, their expected starting salaries nationwide (and increase from 2013):
• F inancial analysts with one to four years’ experience, $52,500 to $70,000 (4.3% increase from 2013)
• S enior accountants, $58,750 to $77,000 (4%) •M obile application developers, $100,000 to $144,000 (7.8%)
• S oftware developers, $80,250 to $127,250 (7.7%) • L awyers with four to nine years of experience, $124,750 to $187,500 (4.8 %)
•
E xecutive assistants, $40,500 to $55,250 (4.1%)
•C ustomer service managers, $40,500 to $55,500 (4.1%)
•U ser-experience designers, $78,000 to $120,000 (7.5%)
• F ront-end Web developers with one to three years experience, $47,750 to $68,000 (4.3%)
Jobs requiring a master’s degree will have the fastest growth rate and according to US News those with a doctorate degree will be the most in-demand, with Dentist at the top in terms of job outlook for the coming years.
US News ranked Computer Systems Analyst as the best technology job and expects that to continue beyond 2014. The Joint Institute of Engineering acknowledges that Software Engineer continues to be in high demand in the Engineering sector. Demand is especially strong for mobile app and software developers and financial analysts, says Sharon Black, of Robert Half International in Oakland, CA. In some cases, "we are seeing offers made in the first interview." Across industries everywhere, big data seems to be the rage. Employers are looking for analysts who can crunch numbers and communicate them to top executives for decision making. The "soft skills" are becoming more important, Black says.
In finance and banking, employers are looking for people with compliance backgrounds who can deal with the raft of government regulations. She adds that finance employees are more competitive if they have an MBA, CPA or other certifications such as certified internal auditor. In legal, firms are hiring litigation support people to
deal with growth in insurance, class-action and patentinfringement cases.
In health care, firms are adding staff to keep up with
an aging population and to assist with the transition from manual to electronic record keeping.
For entry-level positions, employers are looking
for people with "customer service, social media, good communication skills and a great attitude," Black says. u

BOLD RESUMES:
How to Stand Out in the Crowd! Whether you’re looking for a new job or just want to keep your resume updated, you need a resume that stands out. To make it easy for you, we’ve listed 5 tips to get your resume to the top of the pile: 1. Brand yourself. One of the
significant changes to the idea of selfpromotion in the past few years is that an individual may need to be able to sell herself as a brand. This means becoming known for your work ethic, personality, volunteer work, and beliefs, not just training and office skills. Cindy Elifrits Peterson, CEO at Maximizing Excellence, a Sioux Falls organization that helps businesses and individuals optimize their effectiveness, says that if you are looking for a job where human interaction is key, people are going to want to do business with you if they like being around you and what you represent. “I think this depends on the kind of job you are looking for,” she adds, “but being a brand that others want to be a part of makes a lot of sense.” To brand yourself, take a cue from the brands you love: read their mission statement and employee profiles, and then consider what you love about them and their employees. Incorporate similar wording into your summary or objectives statment and your online presence. If you’re asking “what online presence?” you need tip No. 2.
2. Learn SEO. The free internet
marketing strategy that calculates search terms and keywords used by a target audience should be working for you, not just targeting you. The idea of promoting yourself is as old as mankind, but now that technologies like Google, LinkedIn and Twitter are available, when you apply for a job you are likely being Googled or searched for online in some way. By using the same Search Engine Optimization techniques that companies use online to get their products in your face, you too, can make sure your best qualifications
8 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2013
show up whenever your name, industry or skill set is Googled. If negative or irrelevant information comes up when you Google yourself, the same will be seen by your prospective employers.
3. Work for free. Adding volunteer experience to your resume not only shows that you are a hard worker; it tells an employer that you have some very specific transferable skills, says Peterson. “If a person can speak to the skills they learned in a volunteering environment, that’s valuable,” she said. Volunteer work is also a great way to network—another increasingly valuable skill set. According to Gary Gregerson, assistant manager at the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation office in Sioux Falls, nearly 70% of jobs available today will never be posted. Instead, businesses will rely on word-ofmouth recommendations. “Networking is the only way you’ll find out about these jobs, whether that’s networking on social media or face to face, or through friends,” Gregerson says. Networking is almost the most important thing here, because it’s the only way to find out [about unposted jobs].” 4. Digitize your skills and resume. As MOOCs, or free online college classes, become more available, the idea of digital badges and certification is gaining momentum. On June 20th of this year, the White House hosted a webinar encouraging citizens to earn digital badges showing that they have certain skills sets and experiences. According to the Office of Science and Technology Policy, digital badges are being used to
“recognize student accomplishments in technical fields” like computer science, and to “help veterans get jobs by demonstrating the valuable real-world skills they’ve acquired in the military,” among other things. If virtual badges aren’t your thing, simply updating your resume or portfolio for an online format shows prospective employers that you do have the technical skills many industries require today, says Janet Blank-Libra, Associate Professor and Director of Journalism at Augustana College. In 2012 Blank-Libra organized online portfoliobuilding sessions for her journalism students. These portfolios allowed them to instantly connect with employers while showcasing their work. “It seems to me that so many employers turn to the web to find information that it’s likely they’ll look to the web for candidates,” she said. “We need to get portfolios online.”
5. Be consistent. Although online
platforms and portfolios are gaining popularity, the resume will never go away, agree Gregerson and Blank-Libra. This means consistency across formats and platforms is crucial. No matter how great your cover letter is, if your LinkedIn page contains spelling errors (or vice versa) or contradicts your physical resume, you’ll sell yourself short. Make sure your references also reflect what you’ve put out there on the web and on your resume. If consistency is not your strong point, or if formatting resumes and writing cover letters is beyond you, visit a career development or resume-writing service for guidance. The Department of Labor offers these and other services free of charge. u

You only get one chance to sell yourself to a prospective employer. Having a resume that SHINES is a must.
Resume-Writing Services Because you only get one chance to sell yourself to a prospective employer, having a resume that shines is a must. If you need help putting one together, of if you are interested in getting some career coaching, considering a resume-writing service isn’t a bad idea, says Erin Cambier, a certified professional resume writer in Sioux Falls. Cambier, who founded Superior Resume and Career Services in 2009, offers her clients everything from resume writing to mock interviews, corporate training assistance and job search education.
Here are two of her tips to help you find the right assistance for your needs.
1. When looking for a resume or career
service to help you with your goals, Cambier says that finding an organization with which you are comfortable is a good way to begin. “It’s important to know how the process works. Are there worksheets you fill out, or is there a phone conversation? It’s not that one is better than the other, but that
the process is one you are comfortable with.” Remember, professionals helping you should be certified by a reputable organization and provide references or samples of past work.
Superior Resume & Career Services www.superiorresume.com
2. Another key facet of a resume writer’s
job is making sure his client’s resume meets current standards for today’s online application process. “One thing that’s important in writing a resume is making sure it’s compatible with applicant tracking systems,” Cambier says. “A professional can help write a resume that is keywordoptimized for these systems.” If you haven’t yet mastered SEO, going to a professional who understands current hiring practices will be beneficial, as this person already speaks the language that recruiters are using as they create their job posts.

According to the National Center For Education Statistics, 21.8 million students enrolled in some form of higher education this fall. That is an increase of more than 6 million from fall of 2000. Although it will take 2-4 (or more) years for these freshmen to hit the job market, these numbers are a good indicator of how many people already hold Bachelor’s Degrees. These are people with whom you might compete anytime you look for a new job.
Also, keep in mind that presentation is an important part of a resume. If you need help designing a resume, a resume service can help. Even if you feel like you’ve already got a sharp, targeted resume, consider working with a design agency to take your resume to the next step. u

MUST HAVE
WHY YOU a Professional Development Plan You may not have thought about personal and career development since “Career Day” in high school. That’s not a good “plan” in an era of constant economic and technological change. As the old adage goes, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Sure, your company might have an employment development plan (EDP) for you that is part of your evaluation process. But that’s something someone else has put in place for you. Separately, you should develop your own plan that meets your own desires, dreams and career aspirations. “Your professional development is not the responsibility of anyone but you,” says Chrissy Scivicque,a contributor to Forbes magazine in a 2011 article. “Not your company, not your boss, not even your coach. Just you.” Scivicque says the company’s plan for you will be primarily in its best interest. She adds that your professional development is much broader than that—what do you want to do with your career, not just your current job? Where do you want to be in 3, 5 and 10 years? If its CEO of the company, then create a strategy to get you there. This will mean frequent job changes so you can learn all aspects of the company. What career path did the current CEO take to get there? Customer relations, finance, marketing, product development? How can you gain the needed skill set that puts you on top? Are you willing to put in the work and do what it takes? Map out your career and personal life strategies so you can accomplsh all your goals and maintain a healthy, balanced

Set a goal for each area, add the actions needed to achieve the goal and create measurable checkpoints or target date. A simple chart will suffice (see sample chart below). Keep your plan flexible to take advantage of opportunities and unexpected change, but stay focused on your goals and take the time to enjoy your successes along the way. Thus, Scivicque notes, your plan is never done. It is a living, breathing document that accounts for your changes and the changes around you. But mostly, she suggests, get something down on paper. How to Write a Professional Development Plan:
7 Key Steps
Now that you’ve decided to plan your own professional development and career, what’s next? Write the plan! Below are seven steps to create a personal Professional Development Plan.
1. Take Stock in Where You Are and What You Have Done. What do you like to do? What are you good at? If you

want to take a more formal approach, set up a SWOTs chart. That’s four boxes in a square where you’ll list your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats in your career. If you really want to get in-depth, the educator site educause.com has a whole set of questions and journaling you can do at http://net. educause.edu/section_params/mentoring/M06_%20PDP.pdf.
5. Evaluate. Personal Productivity Stack Exchange suggests that you do this and reflect on your successes and setbacks as you work your plan on a regular basis. Be adaptable to changing circumstances. And cut yourself some slack: change and improvement are hard! If they weren’t, everyone would do it.
2. Find a Mentor. There’s no need to do this alone. Find a
6. Keep a Journal. Educause.com is big on this. What you
mentor at work or in your field or profession. Ask them to assess your career and SWOTS. Check in with them periodically to see if you’re on the right path and for encouragement.
3. Set Measureable Goals. The AARP suggests scheduling a specific amount of time each day to work on your goals. Also, set measurable goals, not slippery things like “get smarter.” Instead, write “Obtain certification in widgetology by Jan. 1, 2014” if you think you need to increase your knowledge in that area. Then do it. 4. Strategize. The goals and the sub-steps to achieve them are the tactics. The overall approach you take is your strategy. Write a mission statement, strategy statements and goals under the

7. Create a portfolio of your accomplishments. The
Stack Exchange champions this point. Did you get that certificate in widgetology? Great. Put it in your portfolio. Did you always want to give the quarterly PowerPoint profitability briefing at work and it killed? Put it in the portfolio. You can build your portfolio the old school way with an album or use online portfolio builders like pressfolios.com. It might be the ticket to your next job or next career! u

BIZ Tech Talk
by Alison Peymann
LIBRARIES WITHOUT BOOKS
How technology is changing the local library... and how it will affect the next generation of entrepreneurs Book lovers cringed when the first Nooks®, Kindles and tablet e-readers hit a national market in 2007. Would technology replace bookshelves of cherished page-turners? Could digital publishing provide more access to information for less? Today, some are asking similar questions about libraries.
16 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2013
Once the primary resource for gathering information from print (gasp!) books, libraries are upgrading to meet the demands of a digital world. The focus is still there: providing access to information and education in the community. But to achieve that goal, however, libraries have had to adapt to different medium. The Bexar County Library in San Antonio, TX, is one example of an emerging class of libraries – one without books. According to Time magazine, going 100% digital was the best solution to reach citizens that lived both in and around the city. And it’s working.
Stand Out from the rest The Siouxland and other local libraries have kept their shelves stocked with traditional materials in spite of the popularity of ebooks. Heather Stephenson, an Electronic Resources Librarian at the Siouxland Library system in Sioux Falls, says, “What the ebooks have done is provide another way we can expand our services and bring some people, like kids, back to reading. People can download books in the middle of the night if they want to.”
BizNOW is expanding!
When ebooks first became available in Sioux Falls in February of 2008, she says, there were 187 checkouts that month. Now in 2013, they average 400 checkouts every day!
Are you: Motivated Professional Creative?
With the convenience of at-home, anytime access, why do people still come to the library? With features like public computers, internet access, downloadable books and magazines, multimedia resources and databases, visitors have simply changed how they use the space in Sioux Falls. “Because of the technology, what we’re seeing is that some people will stay all day to use the free wireless internet and public computers. Non-traditional businesses find a resource and can base their business here,” says Stephenson. She also sees job seekers come in to work on their resumes, search for jobs online and take advantage of computer classes to improve their skills. Siouxland Libraries collaborates with the Department of Labor to provide the resource – another way they’re using creative partnerships to find out-of-the-box solutions.

So what will the future hold for books? Will turning pages become a thing of the past? Not likely, Stephenson says, “I don’t think we’ll see the end of books in our lifetime. More flexibility means that overall circulation increase every year – in digital and in print.” u

INNOVATIVE STRIDES IN EDUCATION
Sioux Falls New Technology High School
You don’t have to be an adult to think like one. The students at New Tech high school are proving that. The higher level critical thinking skills and advanced verbal abilities exhibited by New Tech students are traits that differentiate them, says Principal Dolly Ellwein. New Tech uses an innovative curriculum to engage students. Grades are based on factors such as work ethic, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and content knowledge. In this interview Principal Ellwein talks about New Tech’s out-of-the-box education model, which focuses on project-based learning and small group interaction. Do you think that project-based learning (PBL) where students take advantage of digital tools to produce collaborative projects, and where education refocuses on the student, not the curriculum – is a good experience for kids? I think that PBL is great for
thinkers and they know how to seek out and find information. I wish I would have had these skills when I entered college.
Do you think the 21st century skills acquired by the students will be useful in the business world? The 21st
students. Today's student needs to be technologically trained since our world is becoming more and more integrated. Students now crave knowing why the material they are learning is relevant, and they need the hands-on aspect and real world connection to help them engage. I think that the New Tech model is leading the way in education, and that other school districts will follow, as well as colleges.
century skills that we emphasize at New Tech were actually developed by the business community in Napa, California. They were the leaders in telling New Tech schools what they wanted students coming into the business world to be able to achieve, and the skills required.
How do NT high school students stack up against other high school or college students? With all of the

What advantages do you think NT students will have when they go to college? They have the advantage of

Look Fabulous in Photos:
How to Take a Perfect Headshot As Editor for BizNOW and as an on-camera spokesperson for many years, I’m often asked how to take a great photo. Whether you need a headshot for work or you just want to look fabulous on the family Christmas photo, here are 3 tips that can help you look your very best when the cameras roll!
• Bring out your inner superhero (first, be confident;
posture is a must! Then, lower your chin slightly, it creates eye contact with the camera and gives a more flattering look)
• Strike a dynamic pose (look at the camera, then angle your body to the side for a slimmer look)

• Do what the models do: “smize” (smile with your eyes) A half-smile works better than a big grin – and it’s more professional. But let your eyes show energy and light. To get that look, imagine someone special, maybe your first love, walking into the room. Hold it, that’s the look! u

De-clutter the clutter:
Simple Tips to get Organized in 2014! Now before you turn the page in sheer terror of the thought, don’t panic. Biz is here to offer you some methods to organize that will make it a breeze instead of a nightmare. Especially around the holidays, your home, your work and your life can feel a bit...well, cluttered. From family stuffed into that spare bedroom, holiday foods filling the fridge and new toys, gadgets and goods crammed into every available nook in your home, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. But instead of closing the basement door to all that mess, try these tips to tackle it head on and start this New Year out right!
Questionnaire
Old Faithful
Organizing is all about making sure things get done or go into the right spot. One way to do this is grouping things together. Maybe you are just trying to find spots in your home or even work for all the items you need daily. Make categories and fit these items into each; then find the appropriate place. Make a map before you begin so there is an easy guide to follow as you work. u
Make a list of everything you need to do. Now make a second list of all those things from most important to least important or from smallest to largest projects. That way every time you cross something off you can revel in the accomplishment and will be motivated to move forward.
If you are having trouble downsizing try this method. Make a list of three requirements that the object has to meet in order to stay; if it doesn’t pass it’s gone. Examples could be, has it been used in less than six months, does it have sentimental value, would you buy it again, etc.

Strategic planning for 2014:
How to make it your Best Year YET! Ideas to make you money and grow your business!
With a new year ahead, it’s time to wrap up your 2013 business cycle and lay the tracks for 2014. First, let’s consider any tax deductions that may have been missed. Did you maximize your 401(k) employer contribution and Health Savings Account (HSA) plans? Every dollar you contribute to these plans, especially where you and your family members are the beneficiary, is money back into your pocket over the long run. The current tax code provides incentives for you to reinvest into your business and your employees to maximize your future earnings and production potential. The more you reinvest, the more you save in taxes. Be sure to consult your tax accountant and business lawyer. Perhaps 2014 is the year to make that big purchase to improve productivity or expand your R&D or physical plant space, taking advantage of the equipment and real estate depreciation schedules. Take a look at your business plan and evaluate how you are doing against your short and long term plans. Are you on target? Did your mission and plans change but are not reflected in The Plan? Does your Executive Summary still reflect your vision and goals? Review these with your Board of Directors to solicit buy in and encourage new ideas that could propel you into growth areas you had not considered. Maybe its time to buy out a competitor, or sell a product line to an upstart because it no longer enhances your growth potential. Are all your missions providing the returns you expect or could your time and efforts be better spent? Why invest $1 to make $1.10 when that same resource could produce $1.20? That said, protect your core business as you expand into 22 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2013
riskier and perhaps more profitable areas; don't over expose or over leverage your resources. On the flip side, if your ambition or goal (not to be confused with your dream) is too risky, these talented folks on your Board can help you customize and frame your vision into a tangible, workable plan and scope that will match your resources. Discuss what new actions need to be taken and don't hesitate to discard that which does not work. December is National Write a Business Plan Month, so if you have not already created a written business plan, this is a good month to do so. And you will need one if you plan to borrow money from a bank or utilize sophisticated investors to raise capital. Visit visit ehow.com or onlineforms.lawdepot.com for a free template download or professional help in creating your business plan. Seek advice from the SBA, SCORE, or a bank consultant from whom you plan to partner with for financing. Create 1, 3 and 5 year growth forecasts. Describe your vision, business model, financial predictions, benefits to your clients, marketing plan and of course the expected return on investment (ROI). Use the new year to expand your marketing strategies. Sure, you are doing great, but could you do better? For example, you may want to incorporate freebies and promotional items into your sales and marketing plan. According to the Promotional Products Association International, 70% of online shoppers will
add items to their cart in order to receive free shipping. And the cost of shipping is more important to shoppers than speed or flexibility in delivery method. Do you need to expand your advertising? How about a direct mailing campaign, or newspaper, radio or TV to help get your message out? (Of course a premier magazine like BizNOW with a readership of business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals in the Sioux Falls area should already be a part of your marketing plan!) Is it time to expand into new markets? Go international or just into a new neighborhood or state? Should you franchise your operation or lease it to other entrepreneurs? How will you control the product quality, distribution and revenues? For help on how to brand your business or finance and market your product, seek advice from your local Chamber of Commerce, SCORE office, SBA, Community college or from an organization like the South Dakota Business and Technology Center (SDBTC) in Sioux Falls that incorporates most of the above services. Created in 1999 as part of the Forward Sioux Falls Technology Program, the Center seeks to help local entrepreneurs and business people grow their products and services. What are the demographics of your target market? The Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) and the US Census (www.census.gov), both federal agencies, track the movement of people and jobs, disposable income, family
makeup, trade indices, dependency ratios and other vital statistics that may impact your sales and marketing plan. Baby boomers, still the largest sector, are retiring by the tens of thousands and creating new opportunities in health and human services, recreation and travel on a daily basis. Gen x and gen y are struggling with jobs, families, and finding their niche in society. Military personnel are returning from overseas and need job opportunities so the government has programs to help them get a job; perhaps your firm could use a vet or someone with special needs -- and get a tax credit for doing so. Cash flow. Everyone needs it. Your budget and finance plan may rely on credit so use it wisely. Credit should only be used if it will provide you a measurable return in a specified time frame. That is, use it to create assets that will give you a return in either immediate cash or asset appreciation that can be converted into cash when needed. The goal here is to create a pipeline of cash
producing assets that will create an income stream greater than your expenses. You want to create a business model that will work for you, not one where you have to work for it. With the ultimate goal of every business being 'to make money' you need to fine tune your vehicle into a cash flowing machine. Again, your business plan needs to address how and when this will happen. If you only have one product line or service, maybe this is the year to expand, avoiding the same fate of the buggy whip and top hat. Look for venues that compliment your key business and create another or multiple sources of income. If you just make eggs, maybe it’s time to produce some bacon too. If you have a loyal following, your customers will be receptive to a new product line. They already like and trust your product or service, so leverage that into a new income stream of repeat business with current clients. They will tell their friends and the referrals could be priceless. u

Talking for a Living:
Profile of an out-of-the-box Radio Host! “People ask me what I do for a living and I say ‘I shoot my mouth off!’” Talk Radio host Rick Knobe has been “shooting his mouth off” for 30 years. Beginning his career as a disc jockey, a colleague in talk radio took him under his wing and talk radio in Sioux Falls hasn’t been the same since. “Talk radio is about being up-to-date, topical and relevant. With updated technology and 24 hour news, you have to be on top of everything,” Knobe says. In 2002, Rick Knobe received the South Dakota Broadcaster of the Year award, but his career didn’t begin with awards. The transition from playing in a band and working as a disc jockey came naturally, but the move to talk radio was another story. “The equipment is the same, but what you do and how you do it is completely different. I wasn’t very good at first! I’ve gotten better, but I don’t have it mastered yet.” Every day is a new opportunity for Knobe to practice his craft. And in the business of talk radio every day offers news and events to cover. Beginning his day at 11 am , Knobe arrives at the KSOO station, catches up on news and world events, then he begins preparing for the 4pm talk show. “People want to know what’s going on in their town.” 24 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2013
Nationwide and worldwide events impact local communities – topics like the Affordable Care Act and the conflict in Egypt are covered as well as snow gates and new Walmart developments. “We interview primarily local folks for local news. We keep people connected to what’s going on around them.” Knobe has firsthand knowledge of the importance of public policy and community involvement. Knobe served as Mayor of Sioux Falls from 1974 – 1984. “Talk radio had a big impact for me. But that is a story for another day,” he laughs. In 30 years, he has also had the privilege of interviewing national political figures like then-candidates Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush. Local congressional delegates, mayors, and governors also frequent the studio of KSOO. “We deal with issues and public policy. Those people have an impact on your life and my life. It’s a really stimulating thing to do every day. We invite callers to react and offer opinions. That gets a lot of dialogue going,” Knobe says. “I’m fortunate to have people listen to the program.” View Point University plays on 1140 KSOO from 4pm to 7pm weekdays. Next time you see Rick Knobe around town, make sure to tell him what you think. Open dialog and the sharing of opinions is the innovation of talk radio, he believes. “I really love what I do.” u

Starting a Business with a Proven Track Record:
Is a franchise right for you? If you are looking for a pre-made opportunity, one where most of the hard work has been done, then consider a franchise or license opportunity where you can literally open the box and follow the directions (some assembly required). Some well-known licensee businesses are home based, such as Mary Kay, Shaklee, Tupperware, Amway and Avon – all of which can be started for a few hundred dollars. They come with complete marketing plans and support to help you get going. You must provide the essential ingredients of time, effort and action. Other pre-made opportunities have larger start-up costs and carry more risk, so do your due diligence when researching a franchise. For example, the I9 Sports franchise requires an investment of $44,000 to $69,000 to get started and LearningRx will run about $200,000 while a McDonald's can be $1 million or more. You are paying for name-brand recognition and earning opportunity.
Where can you find a list of franchises to invest in?
One option is globalbx.com, where franchises and investment opportunities are listed for sale. You may find a ground floor opportunity where you are on your own, or a start-up that needs help with its expansion. You can even become the sole owner of an existing business. Be sure to find out if it is currently profitable or is in trouble, buyer beware! Check with a local commercial realtor or Craigslist for more business opportunities. See the Franchisee Business Review at franchisebusinessreview.com for independent ratings and reviews of franchise opportunities of all kinds and costs. Business owner and franchise reviews can help you make an educated investment decision if this route is for you. u Note - All businesses mentioned here are for example only and does not constitute an endorsement of their business or marketing plan.
