Decisions. Decisions. Decisions. When the stakes are high and you’re under pressure, it can be tough to make a decision. While everyone can have trouble deciding things once in awhile, here are some powerful tips to help you make decisions with confidence. 1. F ace Your Fears – Sometimes we can’t make a decision because we’re afraid to make the wrong one. Start thinking of things in a more positive way: think of the situation with curiosity more than fear. Ask yourself, what’s the worst that could happen? Then ask, And then what? The goal is to minimize fear. If the worst happened, would it really be as bad as you imagine? How could you address any repercussions? What steps could you take to cope? By naming your fears and figuring out ways to address them, you will feel more powerful and in control.

2. It’s Ok to Ask for Help – You don’t always have to

make the decision yourself. You can put some faith into other people’s experiences and ask them for insight. If you’re dining out at a new place, you might ask the waiter for a recommendation, right? Business is no different; tap into a colleague’s help and expertise when faced with a tough decision. They may have already faced it and can save you a lot of trouble.

Why is that so hard for people to do? Let’s go back to

the Garden of Eden -- they wanted to be gods. We all have this desire to be the one in charge, the one who gets the recognition. We’re all insecure and looking for our place in the world. The way to get your cup filled is to help someone fill their cup. When you’re mutually building each other up, that’s what counts in a relationship, that’s what is lasting.

Is the old “dog eat dog” mentality passé? No. If you are a firm and you’re going to bid a contract or promote your product, yeah, you’re going to fight that out. And that’s ok. The Bible says, Act justly, love mercifully, walk humbly. What does “act justly” mean? Do the right thing. And what is business but a series of decisions where you have the choice to do the right thing? And when you put all those decisions end to end, you get a reputation for integrity, and that will take you a lot further than ego or promotion. What is the most “defining” moment of your career? What a huge question! In business, I think defining

moments came when I realized that the greatest competition that I had… was me. I’d get up in the morning, look in the mirror and say, “YOU are my greatest competitor.” But if I live and work honestly and with integrity, then I’m not worried about the competition. The defining moment is really when we came to believe that. Before every presentation, I used to find a restroom. I’d go into a stall, get on my knees, and say, God I don’t ask for favor over the competition to get the money and so they don’t get the account, just help me be honest and let people see honesty and integrity come out of me so I’m a good representative of you. The rest is up to you. Help me be a light that people can trust. I didn’t always make the best presentation, but I think people are attracted to integrity,

honesty and humility. People want to do business with people they can trust.

BizNOW has taken a big risk with starting a Spiritual series. Your thoughts? Is the business aspect of our life

intended to be divorced from moral integrity? To not have a healthy discussion on how spiritual principles intersect in the marketplace is mindless. We are creatures of our spiritual natures; we don’t just shut those off when we go to the office. So when I saw the Biz Spiritual series, and a story on the Power of Forgiveness, I thought, wow! You’re talking about things people just aren’t talking about! If we divorce ourselves from this in the marketplace, then what kind of a marketplace do we have? A marketplace devoid of values is crisis.

What do you do when the other guy is not acting with integrity? It’s hard to endure when people do

unscrupulous things to you. But generally if someone is doing bad things, others can see right through it. I was at a prayer breakfast with John Maxwell, one of the world’s foremost authors, and he said something that will stay with me all my life: “When people walk away from your funeral, they will summarize your life in one sentence. And what will they say?” Maxwell continued, “It’s not how high you climb. It’s how many people you take with you.” It’s about values. You don’t have to be the star and have all the credit; if you take the team with you, you’ll be the star. You can’t make a good deal with a bad guy, and conversely, it’s difficult to make a bad deal with a good guy. And that’s true. Most importantly, when you go to bed at night, and the room’s dark and you think about Eternity, you’ll be at peace. u

Key Things to know about “Key Person” Insurance

BIZ Finance Life insurance is essential if you have a family. Key Person Insurance (KPI), or “key-man” insurance, could be critical to you and your family in the event of the sudden death of a key business colleague. That key person could be you, the owner, the founders or one or two key employees where the survival of company could be at risk without them. Key person insurance, aka COLI or Corporate Owned Life Insurance is a worthwhile precaution if such a tragedy could mean the financial demise of your company or family.

Here’s what to consider.

Key Person life insurance will be mandated if you utilize a venture capital (VC) firm or a bank when there is significant risk. BOLI or Bank Owned Life Insurance is the same thing but protects the loan source, not you. As a small business owner, in addition to your own life and disability insurance, you should consider a policy on specific people to cover your debts, daily expenses, investors or primary shareholders. KPI can be used for attracting and retaining key employees, financial management, protecting your business, retirement planning, supplemental income to beneficiaries and succession planning. Proceeds from KPI, which are tax free, can also be used to buy out an investor who is not interested in working with a new team. A term policy will have lower premiums and will get you through a rough spot. Even as your business matures, the need for KPI may persist, so talk to your insurance agent and consider all options. Get quotes on various amounts, $100,000 or a half

million based on what you can afford verses how much the company needs to survive while a replacement is found or if the business is to be liquidated.

Affordable

On average, the cost for KPI is generally about $1,000 to $2,000 a year for every $1 million worth of coverage, says Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures in New York City. "Considering how critical a founder [or key person] can be, it is really not that expensive to have the protection in place." To determine coverage, most insurers will use a system based on the salary of the key person, generally capping off at about 10 times the executive's annual compensation.

Every company is different, so while considering options, here are some key questions to ask yourself: • What would happen if you lost a key person? • How much income or revenue could you lose in the time it would take to replace them? • How long would it take to replace them? What expenses would be incurred in the search for a replacement? u

What are the different types of life insurance solutions that can help your business? 1. C orporate- and Bank-Owned Life Insurance (COLI/BOLI). COLI/BOLI is life insurance owned by a company/ bank to insure the lives of key employees. COLI/BOLI can be used to help support deferred compensation and other postretirement employee benefit programs. 2. E xecutive Group Life Insurance (EGL). Executive Group Life Insurance is employer-sponsored group life insurance designed with the specific needs of executives and professionals in mind. 3. Whole Life Insurance. Whole life insurance provides protection for a lifetime. It offers guarantees that you can’t find in other forms of life insurance, including guaranteed premiums that will not increase, a guaranteed death benefit and guaranteed cash value that can be borrowed against. 4. Term Life Insurance. Term life insurance can be your gateway to permanent insurance, providing the amount of protection you need today at a lower cost than a comparable permanent policy. 5. U niversal Life Insurance. Universal life insurance provides lifetime death benefit protection along with some flexibility as your needs change. Coverage amounts may be increased or decreased, and premiums can vary based on your finances as long as there is enough money in the account to pay for the insurance and administrative fees. 6. Variable Universal Life Insurance. Variable universal life insurance is a flexible premium, permanent insurance product combining death benefit protection with other options.

MOVING UP THE LADDER? HOW TO NAIL THAT NEXT GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

You’ve been searching for the right move and found something exciting. Now it’s time to interview for the position, what do you do? Interviews can be nerve racking and intimidating. Here are a few tips that can help you stand out on your way to the executive suite. Do your homework.

When you apply for a new position and get a call back for an interview, do some research. Find out where the company is going to expand, their current market share and how you can contribute to that, identify a weakness and offer a solution. Set yourself apart from other candidates by knowing more than superficial facts. Anybody can read the mission statement on a web site; dig deeper.

Be punctual.

This should be a no-brainer. In fact, arrive 5 minutes early. It’s a great way to impress an employer. If you have an unavoidable conflict and you’re going to be late, call in advance and offer to re-schedule.

Be yourself.

Let them see your enthusiasm for the job and that you’re excited for the challenge. Show them your strengths; go in armed with examples on how you’ve accomplished goals in the past; ask questions to show you’re interested in them. This might be a growth opportunity for you, but let them see how your past experience and background has prepared you to excel in this new opportunity.

Listen.

We’ve all been there. You’re listening to someone talk and your mind drifts and you’ve missed what they just said. Force yourself to focus. Make sure you’re actively listening. This will also help when it comes time to asking questions later. Be sure to make eye contact and remember to project warmth.

Ask questions.

Asking questions shows that you are truly interested in the position and that you’ve done your research. This is one of the great ways you can show a potential employer that you are prepared and an independent thinker. For example, if they want to get a new division up and running in a 3-year period, you might ask if there’s an incentive on the table to getting it done in 2-and-a-half! For example, one can handle the business and marketing and the other the implementation and service team. It’s critical to respect each other’s domain. However, couples are more likely to succeed when one spouse simply pitches in and helps the other rather than when they have equal roles in the business. 6. Learn to work through disagreements. Married people fight. Married people in business sometimes fight even more. 7. Marriage comes first. No matter what’s going on in your business, your marriage must come first.

WILL RENTERS EVER BECOME BUYERS? Homeownership has fallen from 69 percent in 2005 to 65 percent in the first quarter of 2014. A 2014 Survey of Consumer Expectations conducted by The New York Federal Reserve, sheds new light on why the expected housing recovery has not blossomed. The next generation of home buyers, the millennials, seem to have no desire to pursue the American Dream of home ownership or have no clue of their buying potential. Young adults carry an average of $33,000 in college debt and one in four live with their parents. While many renters have a desire to own, they don’t feel they can get credit or seem to grasp how to go about it or have misinformation about the process. The very real concerns of those surveyed showed:

• 5 5.7% simply have not saved enough money and have too much debt

• 5 2.7% feel they do not make enough to purchase a home

• 4 1.4% report they have a poor credit score • 3 5% assume they have poor credit, but have not actually checked

Ironically, many do not perform any real research before coming to the conclusion that ownership is not for them. A mere 5% thought it would be easy to get a mortgage, while two-thirds of renters think it will be somewhat or very difficult for them to get a mortgage.

Very few were concerned about another downturn in housing prices and over 18% did not want to tie up their money in a house. u

By the Numbers: Renter Confidence The New York Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Expectations solicited responses from 867 homeowners and 344 renters.

When asked if they were likely to move in the next three years:

• R enters reported a 63 percent chance, but only a 44 percent chance of buying. • O wners reported a 22 percent chance of moving and a 75 percent chance of buying. The renter to owner transition rate has historically been in the 30 to 50 percent range of all home sales and usually leads the business cycle and housing price growth curve. If renting becomes the socially acceptable norm, the pressure to own will diminish, thereby causing the housing recovery to elongate, and creating a steady demand for rental units.

The Fed researchers explain that “potential buyers who think their credit score is below 680 are convinced that they would not be granted credit and thus may fail to apply for a mortgage even after an easing in standards.” The report also warned that “relaxing Sources: realtor.org; libertystreeteconomics.

The challenge is thus two-fold: To develop a sense of confidence to carry us through the tough times; and to be able to check yourself when that confidence spills over into arrogance.

I have a friend whose passion is to develop antimicrobial surfaces to help third world countries control raging diseases like Ebola. In response to that passion he got degrees in microbial science. He was affirmed by his ability to grasp the science of it and created concepts for new antimicrobial products.

Confidence emanates from 3 factors working together in your life: passion, affirmation, and opportunity. It’s an “I know I can do it” attitude, based not just on hopes or dreams but upon real life experience.

Do you have a passion?

Something you just know that you’re supposed to do? Think about this in terms greater than just “make a lot of money.” Money is fine, but it should be the by-product of your passion, not your goal.

Find your passion. Pursue it. Seek the affirmation that will lead to opportunity.

Not long ago I was honored to head an organization that raised $1.2 billion for charity. I got to know fabulously wealthy people from across the nation. To them, it wasn’t about the money. They spoke with me about finding meaning in life beyond finances. And I would ask them, “What is your passion?” What’s yours? I believe we have purpose on this earth and I believe our Creator wants us to find it. And when we get in tune with our passion, our life sings with meaning and fulfillment.

The second step is affirmation. And that’s when

people say to you, “You know, you’re really good at that.” Or when you find that you just naturally excel at something.

I was mentored for several years by Dr. Bill Bright, one of the towering Christian leaders of the 20th century. He said that pride is the most destructive force in the universe and offered this advice: When you enter a room full of people, your natural tendency is to think immediately that you’re higher up than one of them, lower than another, you immediately try to work out a mental pecking order.”

“Instead,” he said, “think of yourself more lowly than any of those in the room. This is the way to be a leader, to first be a servant of them all.” Try it. The next time you walk into a meeting, think of yourself that way. It’ll change what you say and how you act. Remember: your confidence comes from knowing your passion, the affirmation that you can excel at your passion, and then living in the joy of finding the opportunity to do it. u

LifeScape is a local nonprofit organization that will work with a business to find opportunities for people with disabilities. LifeScape specialists team up with a business to see what their needs are, and if there is a match for a job-seeker to fill the need. Deidrea Peabody is an employment specialist with LifeScape and works to place candidates in the workforce.

“We assist the person on their job search, creating exposure and education on jobs that are in the community,” says Peabody. “During this time, the individual can try out a job, like an internship, to see if it is a good fit for the person and employer.” Once the person is hired, the employment specialist stays on as a “job coach,” providing assistance and acting as a liaison between employees and employers. For example, ensuring they have reliable transportation to and from their job, or that they have the infrastructure they need to function effectively. The employment specialist stays on for about the first three months, eventually fading out. Since the start of this program over 25 years ago, many people with disabilities have had the opportunity to achieve

their dreams by becoming employed in the community. “Last year 35 people started new careers and 49 people had the opportunity to complete internships,” says Peabody. “We have helped people find new jobs, build their network, and develop collaborative relationships with community business members.”

Manager at Hy-Vee, works with LifeScape to bring people with disabilities onto their staff. “We started working with LifeScape four years ago here at Hy-Vee,” says Zingmark. “We found that we were able to meet some really great adults, helping them to perform job-related tasks, with the end result being a great employee. In an age where just about all of us are online, it’s important to know how to protect yourself from fraud. Here are a few ways to avoid identity theft and feel confident about conducting business online . Change default passwords. Hackers have recently been stealing voicemail passwords by guessing the typical or default combinations like 1-1-1-1, 1-2-3-4, or the last 4 digits of your phone number. They can then use the phone to make international and long distance calls, racking up your bill. Make more complex passwords and change them frequently, it will help deter hackers. Don’t click “remember password” function.

Websites and mobile apps often require a password, and may offer you the option of clicking “remember me” or “keep me logged in.” Avoid these options and you help protect yourself from fraud. Log out each time you’re done. If someone were to gain access to your computer or you left your phone at the grocery store, they would have a harder time accessing your accounts and stealing your information.

Encrypt your data. Download and use encryption

software that will scramble the information you send over the Internet. Encryption is online shredding except it can be decoded by the intended recipient. There are numerous affordable and reliable encryption software packages you can purchase that electronically “shred” your documents. Folder Lock and SensiGuard are two popular encryption software packages you may want to consider.

Shop wisely. When shopping online, avoid scams by becoming familiar with the website before you make your purchase. It’s easy to click a few times and be somewhere with an amazing deal that looks too good to be true. Chances are that it is. Also, make sure you’re shopping

from a website with an “S” after the HTTP so it looks like this (HTTPS://url) and then look for the small lock which usually appears on the bottom right of the checkout screen. This ensures that the website has SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption software installed.

Keep an audit trail. Allowing certain members of your

staff to have access to bills and other financial information is crucial in today’s world, but make sure you have an audit trail so you can track your finances and ensure nothing will fall through the cracks. What is an audit trail? It’s a record listing what transactions take place and who made them. It will also record invalid attempts to access your business records. It’s important to keep a record of these transactions in the event of an audit, dispute, or fraudulent situation.

Avoid sharing too much on social networks. Just about anyone on the Internet can view what you’re doing through social media websites. Lock down your account by making your profile available only to your friends and be careful about accepting friend requests from just anyone. Hackers use social networking sites to get valuable information about you that could then be used to access your identity or reset your passwords by selecting the ‘password reset’ option and answering those privacy questions. And again, never give out sensitive information over the Internet. You can never be too safe on the Internet. Ever had a dream to do something special? Maybe to compete as a bodybuilder, or run a marathon? Two women in the local market are doing just that -- making their dreams come true. Even more amazing, both women are over 49! Which just goes to show that the right time to try for any dream is right now.

The unstoppably slow yet rapid demise and death of her sister Lynn in 2012 of pancreatic cancer, caused Lori Kading, already in her late 40’s, to re-evaluate her life. She looked at herself in the mirror and knew she needed to change. She immediately challenged herself to step out of her comfort zone, begin a grueling training regimen, and resolved to do everything she could to change her life. It starts with believing in yourself and visualizing what you want to accomplish. Lori wanted to see a fit, confident woman. Visualizing a sculpted and toned body was an important factor driving her success. It does not happen overnight or without help. She hired a personal trainer to guide her physical routine, diet and to keep her accountable. Training for a competition requires time management. One needs to schedule time not only for workouts, but to prepare your food. Nutrition is 80% of your training, according to Lori. Her workouts consist of weight training 5 times a week, cardio 7 times a week (sometimes twice daily), and eating 6 small healthy meals per day. Supplements help with muscle recovery. Training the mind is just as critical as the body. Lori says, “Enter a show to compete against yourself. While it may be disappointing to not place, knowing you gave everything you have is very rewarding. Be the best ‘you’ can be!”

What surprised her the most was how competitive she became with herself, and once she started seeing changes in her body – it became exciting! When a competition looms, she questions her confidence, “Can I compete against the other athletes?”

She prays daily for guidance, dedication, and the willpower to complete another day. There is also the promise of a blue Tiffany box at the other end! Lori will soon be competing in Omaha at the NANBF Buffs Classic, an allnatural (no steroids or other banned substances) bodybuilding and fitness competition for both women and men.

Cindee Evenson is not just Assistant Track Coach of the Year in SD and a Menno High School teacher, she's now busy training for the Chicago marathon! Talk about a full schedule! Cindee reveals what it's like to train for a marathon, and gives her best tips below for becoming a long-distance runner.

Another part of training is the equipment, or shoes in this case, which she replaces about every 500 miles.

“I think I had a moment of insanity,” Cindee says when asked why she decided to run a marathon, “and after I paid the entry fee I couldn’t back out!” Chicago won’t be her first marathon, but it will be her biggest. She had always thought about participating in a marathon, and after a few false starts and nagging injuries, she saw the “big 5-0” on the horizon and decided to get serious about her dream. After completing the Minneapolis Marathon – not just once, but twice-she set her eye on the huge Chicago Marathon this fall. Some marathons require qualifying times, like Boston, but most will allow anyone to run. Chicago had so many people signed up last year -- 39,000 -- that they limited it this year via a lottery system. Both she and her daughter got lucky. Cindee runs 5 times a week with a long run on the weekend, adding a mile every week.
