There’s a fascinating character in the Heroes of Olympus adventure series by Rick Riordan. Her name is Piper and she has the superpower of “charmspeak.” It’s a gift of charm that’s so intense she can inspire devotion in others and influence their actions just through her words. In one instance, she fights the deadly monster Medea, shattering a spell the evil monster had put on two best friends to make them turn on each other and try to kill each other. Piper draws on every ounce of her strength to remind them of who they are and their friendship, pouring love and emotion into her words. It breaks the evil spell, and Piper changes destiny. Maybe you’ve known people who have that kind of personal magic. Bill Clinton comes to mind. He could rally a crowd with his charisma and hypnotize an audience, and as one person I know said after hearing him speak, “Every woman in the crowd was mesmerized by him.” Martin Luther King, Jr and his “I have a Dream” speech has resonated through the generations.

Leverage Your Network Things are not going quite as planned and you are not quite sure how to address it. Well, not without breaking the bank. You are not alone, every successful person has faced a similar situation. Henry Ford once said, “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” And Joel Osteen reminds us, “Just because you don’t know the answer doesn’t mean that one does not exist. You simply haven’t discovered it yet.” So how do you move forward? Tell people what you are

doing and what you need – and perhaps how they too could benef it. When you involve others in finding

a solution, not just your immediate team but your larger business network, you will not only find a workable solution but you will build the trust and respect of others. Think of your business network as a bank, you make deposits when you reach out to help others or respond to their requests for help and you can draw out the same favors, just keep a positive balance. Your goodwill is an essential element in your greater success and if your credit is good, you will indeed get timely responses. People feel good when they have helped someone else and you just raised their self-worth, adding dividends to your network account.

Even when you have a solution, you may want to pass it by a trusted associate to help build your inner circle, and who knows, they just might have a better idea. Networking is not a new concept, perhaps a forgotten art, just look to the ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus, “The

Except it’s Tuesday afternoon and you’re at your cubicle and that new co-worker from down the aisle is making eyes at you and it’s a little hard to concentrate on these expense reports that you’ve been staring at for over an hour. Sound familiar? We know it is not easy to climb the corporate ladder when you are weighed down by potential everlasting (probably) love in the office. How do you navigate the workplace environment with all these attractive people around? Well Biz is here to answer all those burning questions for you.

How do you deal with your romantic feelings toward a coworker?

You’ve been with the company for a few years now, you’re great at what you do and you can see this turning into a lifelong career. But out of left field comes a gorgeous colleague in the finance department. It was drool at first sight and you haven’t been able to focus since. What do you do!? If you need a little more help, the best approach is to talk to someone – a close friend, your yoga partner, grandma etc. Really vent about the whole thing (well, maybe skip the intimate details with grandma) and then go home and take a cold shower. Simply talking can release a lot of the tension and make you forget about the situation during work hours. The second best approach is to get a hobby. Yes, a hobby. A healthy distraction of any sort will do – we recommend working out, knitting, baking, etc. Eventually, something in your life will shift and you won’t even remember what’s-their-name and that’s that.

“Elevator Pitch” Sell Yourself in 30 Seconds or less!

Why are we talking about elevators? Well, as any business person, job seeker or entrepreneur knows, marketing yourself is essential to getting ahead. That’s where an “elevator speech” – or 30-second commercial – comes in handy. In short, it’s a blip about who you are, what you do, and why (insert person or company here) needs you, for (an employee, a client, a partner etc.) It seems simple but it can be hard to portray yourself as unique and genuine in just 30 seconds while trying to cram in all the wonderful things you want them to know about you! When planning your elevator speech, here are 3 things to keep in mind so your pitch ends up perfect:

1. Write it down- Scribble down the most important aspects about you and your business or career. Now, edit that list down even further to the absolutely most impressive and unique things about you so that you can stand out more. 2. Create variations- You want to tailor your pitch to the person you’re speaking with, so come up with a few different ways to sell yourself. It’s also a good idea to create shorter and slightly longer variations. For example, sometimes you might have 20 seconds to introduce yourself

and other times several minutes, so be sure to practice with a few variations while still listing your core attributes. (Those you made in step one.) Be sure to listen to the people that you are meeting with and what they seem to value so you can also customize your pitch on the fly.

3. Practice and be confident- Try practicing your

pitch out loud and in front of someone else for feedback. You want to sound relaxed and intelligent, with no stuttering or muttering! It’s also important to not sound like a robot repeating some lines, so be sure to add your personality in there! u

The L-Factor!

The Likeability Factor – it’s charisma, it’s charm and it’s oh-so-attractive! You know the people that I’m talking about - when they enter a room, all eyes are on them; you hang on their every word because they have that ability to draw you in, building an immediate connection. From national talk show host Kelly Rippa to Sioux Falls’ very own Sylvia Henkin – they both have that little extra something that puts you immediately at ease when you meet them, establishing instant trust and the L-Factor. Yes, you like them, admit it! So what are the secret skills to getting the L-Factor in your life? First, understand that likeability goes beyond looks. It’s about self-confidence that comes out in your sense of humor and intellect. Some say that you’re either born with charisma or you’re not. We disagree. It’s like any skill that can be cultivated. Sure some may have natural ability, but you can do anything with practice. Retired High School Forensics Coach, Pat Pins said to a student before a competition, “I don’t care if you’re sweating so much it looks like you have a vest on, you stand up there and demand attention…and don’t begin speaking until every eye in the room is on you and there is silence.” Now that shows confidence and presence! Confession time: that student was me, and that was great life advice. Insight and passion are also part of the L-Factor. Telling great stories puts people at ease and draws others in. The fact is, we like people that we can relate to and when someone makes us laugh, that builds a connection. Being interested in others is also a big part of the L-Factor. How often do you say, “How are you?” Come on, do you really care how they are? If you cared, you’d be specific…”How are things going with that big project at work, how’s Brianna doing in basketball?” We had a German Exchange student this fall and her comment about Americans is that they ask how I am, but they don’t want to know. It was that conversation that made me think about that simple question of “How are you?” People that have the L-Factor want to know how you are and they put you at ease by asking that simple question because you know they truly care. The final piece of the L-Factor puzzle is body language. Be open and approachable through your smile, eye contact and your voice. When you are smiling, your voice has the tone of openness and it’s smiling too. We all have certain body language we don’t like. Do you ever exhibit those traits? I’m talking about the person you meet at the Chamber Mixer who is happy to talk to you… until they see someone else whom they deem more important. That person does not have the L-Factor. Body language can be a very powerful way to demonstrate that the person you are talking to is the most important person on the 12 | BizNOWmagazine.com | February 2014

planet. Nothing sums up that feeling better than this quote from Maya Angelou: “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” When you have the ability to make others feel good, that’s the L-Factor! u

How to Be Likeable History tells the tale of likeable, charismatic (but malicious) people like Adolf Hitler or Jim Jones who could get whole crowds – sometimes nations! – to follow them. But when people use their skills and talents for the betterment of society…amazing things happen. So whether you were born with the L-Factor and charisma or you have to practice it – how do you keep it going? Again, remember the steps:

1. B e Self-Conf ident – When you like who you are, others will too. Be optimistic and authentic.

2. Show Insight and Passion – Truth is, loving what you do builds excitement and makes others want to know more.

3. Tell Stories – Make sure the story fits the occasion to put people at ease and draw them in. Use humor where appropriate and be relevant.

4. Express Genuine Interest in Others – Did you

know that the words silent and listen are made of the same letters? When you silence the voice in your head, you can truly listen, pay attention, focus and ask questions in an empathetic manner.

5. B e Aware of Body Language – Pay attention to

how you carry yourself. Be open, approachable and smile. Maintain eye contact and keep your focus on the person you are talking to.

In real estate, it’s always about Location! Location! Location! But in the L-Factor and many other great life skills, it’s all about Practice! Practice! Practice!

Acing the Job Interview

How to Come Across Polished & Confident I interview several people per day. I have seen it all -interview blunders that range from cell phone use to burping and spitting on the table! I’m going to assume everyone knows that these things are not appropriate, so let’s get to the facts. What do most job candidates need to know to appear polished and confident? Appearance is only half the equation.

“Polished” interviewers are those who are not only dressed in a pressed suit, have perfect hair, great smile and handshake; they are those who are intellectually sound in how they deliver the entire presentation of themselves. Be prepared and sharp, positive, and yourself. It’s not always the most qualified candidate who gets the job, but the one that is most prepared.

Here are 5 tips that can help you nail the interview:

The Question that Stumps Most Job Candidates

1. Know about the company. Do your research. It

doesn’t matter if you are applying for accounting and accounting is exactly the same everywhere. If they are taking the time to learn about you, give them the same courtesy. Plus, you will stand out if they ask you what you know about the company – it shows you took the time to learn who they are.

2. B e honest, but not brutally honest. For example: If you don’t like your current boss, say something like “tensions in the office seem to be taking away from my position and I would like to be in a more positive work environment.” Put a positive spin on it.

3. P repare by reviewing common questions interviewers ask. It’s noticeable when you do.

Common questions include: “What are your strengths?” “What are your weaknesses?” “Why do you want to work for us?”

4. M ake sure you come up with a list of questions for the interviewer. Never say you

don’t have any, even if they already answered your prepared questions. Rack your brain for something. Once again, you need to do your due diligence on this and not ask publically known questions that could be found on their website.

5. S end a thank-you note. No one does this anymore. It will set you apart. (But, be careful: make sure there are no spelling / grammar errors – I have seen this blunder knock people out of the running.)

“Tell me about yourself.” If you are asked an open-ended question like this, it may not be clear what response they are looking for. So instead of wondering if they want you to start with your childhood pet rock or your last big promotion, just ASK. The answer to this question is simple. “Where you would like me to start?” This way, it makes them clarify exactly what THEY want to hear, and gives you more of a otohP yregamI ,e direction to go. What do you expect me to accomplish in the first 60 to 90 days?

What does charisma mean to you and why is it important in leadership? In a simplistic way

it’s about your style when interacting with others and how they then perceive you. You will find that charisma or style can play a large part in how successful you – or your organization– ultimately becomes.

Are you born with charisma or do you develop it? It’s a combination. I have traits from

both my mom and dad. So that gene pool had a role in terms of my personality. But life experiences, your environment, corporate culture and people you associate with can certainly have an impact as well.

How does one become more charismatic?

Put yourself in situations that allow you to grow and flourish. Surround yourself with dynamic, confident and positive people. Join organizations that test the boundaries of your personality and test the limits of your capabilities.

How can you stay a likeable person and stay true to your mission? There is

a misconception that competitive people – those really striving to accomplish incredible feats – are not likeable. I don’t think that’s fair. They are focused leaders trying to motivate others to accomplish great things. Some people find that uncomfortable. Many likeable people are in situations where they are required to push others, getting them out of their comfort zone and all the while encouraging them to succeed.

What are some tips on how to survive as a public celebrity? Be yourself, be comfortable and

confident and the main thing is to have fun with it. I am blessed because I do something ‘brand-spanking new’ every day and meet interesting folks every day as Mayor. on Being in the Public Eye (cont.) How can you differ with someone but remain on good terms? When

I ran for Mayor, there was one promise I made to the people of this town. I would listen and learn from them. We would have to agree to disagree at times, but the people I served would know where I stood on a particular issue and why. Finding common ground, using compromise, and oh my, throwing in some common sense works wonders.

How can you deal with criticism in the public eye? It comes with the

territory. You have to realize that every single time you make a decision, there are always going to be a certain percentage of people that are going to disagree with you.

Can you tell me a story of a situation that inspired you? Sure.

My folks were divorced when I was in the fifth grade. My mom and four kids – of which I was the oldest – ended up moving out. There were times when I was mad, scared, and questioning ‘why is this happening to me or my family, why didn’t we have any money, why is my situation so different?’ Ultimately it made me study more, work harder, strive for something better and toughen me up big time. That drive lives within me today. The blessing – also the curse – is that my ultra-competitive nature will be with me for the rest of my life. I take each day that I have been given, and ultimately want to make something positive with it. Surrounding myself with can-do people is a key ingredient to ensure that happens. u

How did you get involved in the Mrs. South Dakota pageant? I am

a native Sioux Falls girl, with a passion for making a difference. A few years ago, I made some pretty basic changes in my life – how I ate, moved, thought and talked – which enabled me to truly blossom into the leader I’ve aspired to become. I started my own health coaching business to do just that – and then this past year decided to take a risk by joining the pageant, which allowed me to reach more people with my message of self-care and holistic health.

What does charisma mean to you? Charisma is a genuine smile,

intentional eye contact, listening with your body and ears, and picking up on what makes another person special and unique. The most charismatic quality is the ability to bring out the best in others.

Are you born with charisma or do you develop it? I believe having

charisma is closely tied to self-confidence, which will enable you to uplift and inspire others. I think you can become more charismatic by practicing listening skills, engaging with others, and doing what you can to boost your own confidence.

How can a person stay likeable but stay true to your mission?

I think staying true to your mission – whatever it may be—is what makes a person likeable. Authenticity is attractive.

What are some tips on how to survive as a public celebrity?

Maintaining a professional image is important, but people want to know that you are a “real person” with real challenges, faults, and mistakes.


How can you differ with someone but remain on good terms? When it comes to conflicting perspectives,

I think it’s important to recognize the difference between congenially disagreeing with someone, and disrespecting the person. Respecting another person’s right to feel and believe as they do is fundamental to keeping peace despite disagreement. I tend to focus more on listening and learning about the other perspective, rather than sharing and educating about mine.

How can you handle tough situations with class? Just let it go. My mom always told me “calm is in control.” If the criticism is constructive, then it’s best to respond by acknowledging where I may have gone wrong and making a change.

Who do you think is the most charismatic person in history? Martin Luther King, Jr. His passion for change and equal rights commanded attention and respect from others. He could connect with everyone on an authentic level and speak to their innermost needs without compromising his mission.

BizNOW is all about inspiring people to become the best they can be. Tell me a story about someone who inspired you? My parents are two of

the more inspirational people I have ever known. My mother is a well-respected principal and leader, and my father has committed himself to his business, which he transformed from the ground up. Their work ethic, people-skills, and dedication to what they love inspires me daily as an entrepreneur and leader.

When did you start seeing yourself as a leader? I always felt like I had a lot of potential, but never really had the confidence until high school where I pushed myself into new opportunities. My senior year, I was chosen as a drum major for the LHS marching band, and had the chance to march at the front of the band in the Rose Bowl Parade! I remember feeling very proud and like a real leader by that point. What is one thing you want to accomplish this year? As Mrs. South Dakota International, I’d like to create a community support group for women seeking holistic healthy lifestyle changes.

What do you like best about BizNOW? It always packs a big punch! Lots of great articles pertinent to being a business leader.

How will the Dodd-Frank bill impact the business lending market? Dodd-Frank will restrict some

of the products and services that financial institutions can deliver to the business lending market. While the intent of Dodd-Frank was to help protect the consumer; the unintended consequence will be less flexibility and choices for consumers when it comes to products and services. It will create longer lead times for customers to receive their loans and there will also be increased costs because of the new regulations and oversight.

How are you helping your clients understand the new regulations? We are proactively

starts are taking off again. Demand for health, travel and auto leasing services is increasing. Agriculture continues to have a bright future and we are really seeing the start of growth in all sectors.

How important do you think charisma is to being a good leader? It is very important but there

is a fine line between charisma and arrogance. Employees will rally behind a leader that they believe in, trust and has confidence to make decisions.

What’s ahead for you in your career? I started 23 years ago in

banking as a Teller. I am still here today because I enjoy working with and helping people. I will continue down

this path as long as I feel I am helping customers and employees.

Who inspires you? My wife Kay who’s philosophy is” if you touch something always leave it a little better than you found it”, My late father who taught me to stand up for what you

believe in and my grandfather who believed in “keep it simple and always work on the fundamentals”.

What is one thing people don’t know about you? I attended a one

room county school through the 8th grade and boarded in town during the week my first two years of high school. u
