fitness for your business, spirit & soul! Photo by Jayne Erickson
It’s a New Year. Only you know what your dreams and hopes are, where you are headed, or what challenges you’ve been working through. But know this: 2014 can be the year you make it happen! Sometimes you don’t see anything changing. Maybe you work 18-hour days just to keep your business running. Maybe you lost a job, or a personal relationship didn’t work out, or maybe it’s taking longer than you thought to get to where you want to be. Don't let the economy or your challenges slow you down or delay your dreams. Find inspiration, get encouraged, realize that you can still make everything happen. Make the changes you need to; let go of what’s not working, and draw in more of what is.
Aff irmations “Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges. So what. Get started now. With each step you will grow stronger.” – Mark Victor Hansen “Miracles start to happen when you give as much energy to your dreams as you do to your fears.” – Richard Wilkins
You may not feel confident. Call yourself confident anyway. You may not feel prosperous. But talk prosperity anyway. You may not feel successful. But know you have everything you need – the talent, the ability, all the gifts – to fulfill your destiny and become everything you were meant to be. You are in the right place, at the right time. Look around, opportunity is everywhere. Help others to achieve their dreams and they will be your supporters. Welcome new people into your life; fabulous breaks are ahead. As Jules Renard said, “Everything you want is out there waiting for you to ask. Everything you want also wants you. But you have to take action to get it.”

Don't Be a
Job Hoarder: Learn to Delegate
General Dwight Eisenhower learned early in his career that he couldn’t get the big tasks done if he did not delegate effectively. A “to do” list is fine—but it’s only a start toward efficiency, management and leadership. So Gen. Eisenhower devised what is now known as the Eisenhower Matrix to help him keep his focus on the big and important tasks, and to reduce or delegate the not-so-important ones. The Eisenhower matrix is deceptively simple, and it can work for you too. It has four boxes or “quadrants.” The beauty of the Eisenhower Matrix is that you can set it up to cull your tasks on paper, sticky notes, computer software and iPhone or Android apps.
However you do it, think in these two steps: 1. I s the task important or urgent? If so, do it or plan it now. 2. I f it isn’t, delegate, decline or delete it. If the Eisenhower Matrix was good enough for the man who helped save the world from the Nazis, it’s good enough for you and me. Ike was a man who knew his priorities. So should you. u

YOU might be a “job hoarder” if.. ... you insist on making every decision, no matter how trivial, including which way the toilet paper hangs on the spindle in the office restroom – over or under!

These are the things that are often more important in the long run than even most “urgent” activities.
SCHEDULE IT. The bottom left box is for “urgent but unimportant” events or tasks.
The f inal quadrant is for “unimportant and not urgent” tasks. They are time wasters or have no discernible deadline or do not contribute to your goals.

Healthy Workers, Better Business As a business owner or manager, you invest in professional development for your team, schedule one-on-one check-ins, and even bring your families together every year for a picnic. Why? Because you care about the well-being of your employees and want them to succeed. Do them – and your bottom line – a favor this year with an employee health program based on disease prevention. Can you afford not to? A smoker costs employers $6,000 per year and is the
single most preventable cause of death in the US. Tobacco use is responsible for 440,000 deaths every year. One out of two smokers dies from a smoking related disease.

An obese employee will cost an extra $2,500 per year.
Bottom line: Having healthier employees not only saves you
These expenses crop up in higher insurance costs and taxes, but they also come from loss of productivity and absenteeism. To combat the growing problem, employers are taking steps to keep their employees fit and healthy. Fortunately, business owners don’t have to go it alone. Debbie Lancto, an Avera Health Plans Health and Wellness Champion with 15 years of experience in corporate wellness, personal and group training says, “I get to help educate members who have our employer coverage right at the workplace. I believe in helping people improve their quality of life with education and resources so they can do it on their own time as well.” Working with companies, and more importantly the individual, gives her the chance to impact larger groups of people and create communities of health conscious professionals.

theINNER CIRCLE:
Should you have an Advisory Board or a formal Board of Directors? Advisers can help with the big ideas and decisions, give direction and provide options to consider. They should be able to give solid advice and tell you things that you may not want to hear. A board of directors can be appointed or elected and is governed by formal bylaws. They meet regularly and often make binding decisions. An advisory board, on the other hand, is less formal. They are under no legal obligation and have no authority over the company. They are simply there to advise.

Career Fitness: Advice from a Recruiter Finding the Right Fit There is more than one reason to be fit after the holidays, and we’re not talking about hitting the gym or going on that proteinshake only diet. If this is the year you have decided to find a new position, there are a lot of questions you need to ask yourself and have answered by the hiring managers you are meeting with for interviews. To “fit” into a position, you need to consider more than just the technical skills. Career fitness includes pay, title, commute, company culture, revenue, benefits, and company size. Similar to physical fitness, you need to address where the problem areas are currently. Pay and title are two of the most common reasons people give for looking for a new position. If pay or titles are important to you, before applying elsewhere, ASK your boss for a raise or gotohP yregamI ,er r a p h y ieV f advanced title. You need to present your feJ yb position well enough so there is no oto hP reason to reject your request. Put together a presentation about why you believe you deserve a raise/ title change. Answer questions such as: what did I bring to the table this year? How Career fitness is did I save the company BOTH how you fit money? How did I make within the company, the company money? How did I improve processes to and how the decrease workflow? Ask company fits you. your boss for a meeting and stun them with how you improved the company last year. IF that doesn’t work, then you know it may be time to start looking. Company culture is becoming more and more of a hot button when it comes to where you want to work. Dig for information regarding how the employer retains employees, why the position is currently open, and what a “day in the life of” the role would look like. These questions can give a lot of insight into how involved managers may be, how happy employees are, and management styles.
12 | BizNOWmagazine.com | January 2014
Research company revenues and targets and the company size by employees. Revenue and size trends could mean additional growth and opportunity in the future as far as your position is concerned. Think big picture. But also, figure out which fits you better: small family-owned companies, or large and everexpanding companies. Everyone is different. Career fitness is BOTH how you fit within the company, and how the company fits you. Once you know your own career fitness goals, target the companies that can help you improve.
Career Stamina: 4 Tips for Keeping that Fit Now that you’ve found the perfect position and you start on Monday, there are bound to be a few nervous jitters. Here are four tips that can help you fit in quickly to a new work culture. 1. W hen meeting new people, be friendly and personable. This should go without saying, but some of us are shy, and you absolutely need to break out of your shell; at least for the first few days. But, I’m not saying walk right into the CEO’s office and shake his hand. Understand your place, but also know you are welcome. 2. C atch on as quickly as possible. If it is new software, don’t be afraid to google tutorials after work. Once you understand the basics you can tackle tasks that have to do with your actual position. 3. I f the position is a step up, you may need additional help. Find a mentor within the company and ask them if they would be open to helping you along for the first few weeks as you settle in. 4. R equest additional responsibilities once you have a handle on things and be open to cross-train in different roles. It’s not only about the first few weeks, but continually evaluating how you are doing in the role and how you fit into place with the rest of the team. Constant awareness of this will not only help you do the job you were hired for, but it will guide you to the top! u

Forgiveness: Why it’s Good Business.
Whether it’s a relationship with a client who did us wrong, a co-worker or a friend, this is the year to let it go and move on. It not only helps your emotional well-being, but it's good business. Forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation. When we confuse the two, sometimes we are slow to forgive. But you can provide forgiveness even when all is still not right, or even when the other person does not offer it to you. The good news is, forgiveness has tremendous positive health benefits for the forgiver. When we forgive someone in our heart and mind, a tremendous stress is released from our soul and we become a calmer, more positive and productive otohP yregamI ,e rieV person. Need Forgiveness? Here are 7 steps that can get you moving toward conflict resolution, and help create new life in a relationship. They’re called the “Seven A’s of Reconciliation.”
otohP yregamI ,e rieV yhparg
ffeJ yb oto hP
Asking for forgiveness – even when the other person does not offer it - means you will have made a life-giving move that reverses the power in your favor. It frees you.
But we can also make clear to someone that in order for the relationship to be restored there must be accountable changes in behavior, restitution if possible, and a “new normal” in how you relate to each other. This can open the door for the other person to ask for forgiveness and complete the circle.
You regain your personal power by releasing someone from your judgment. In forgiving you are no longer allowing them to hold your emotions hostage. This is often more than a onetime thing. You may have to say to yourself “I release x or this circumstance” more than once. Specifically the act of giving forgiveness involves separating the offending person’s worth as a human being from their actions. At its core, the forgiveness you give or ask for is about you. It’s about your health, reclaiming your personal power, and if you are a person of faith, your relationship with God. u
1. Address everyone involved (All those whom you affected) 2. Avoid “if”, “but”, and “maybe” (Do not try to excuse your wrongs – for example, no “IF I offended…” sentences). 3. Admit specifically (Both attitudes and actions) 4. Acknowledge the hurt (Express sorrow for hurting someone) 5. Accept the consequences (Such as making restitution) 6. Alter your behavior (Change your attitudes and actions) 7. Ask for forgiveness
No one wants to live or work in a war zone. Give forgiveness a shot; it is healthy for you and will make you a better person, friend and co-worker. January 2014 | BizNOWmagazine.com | 15

How can you grow your faith if you aren’t naturally optimistic or positive? Start by changing
the way you look at things, and the things you look at will change. Instead of seeing something as a challenge, look at the challenge as a vehicle to create powerful change. Always look for the good in people, and in life.
How has faith been important in your own career? I love the movie, Pursuit of Happiness with actor
Will Smith. When he was in the bathroom, crying with his son, he kept telling himself, “I am going to be great!”, even when the conditions around him were horrible and he didn't have a dime in his pocket, he kept his BELIEF that he was going to be the BEST! Then later on in the show he told his son, "Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do something...If you have a Dream, Go Get It!" After my husband suffered a stroke in October, my own motto of "when life seems at its worst is when you become your best," was put to the test. When we worry instead of believe for the best, we doubt what can be done.

Our Faith is tested every day. It's in the time of weakness that we become strong, but only through faith.
How can a person strengthen their faith and inspire better leadership? Start every day by giving
thanks: gratitude unlocks the fullness of life and gives us a vision for tomorrow! John Maxwell books are a big part of my life. I also like Joel Osteen’s biblical messages.
Favorite quote on faith? “You are never given a dream, without also being given the power to make it come true!” So ignite the power in you. u

How to REDUCE YOUR CHANCES FOR A
TAX AUDIT
Let’s take a minute and talk about filing your taxes. That and death are the two inescapable realities of life, and small business owners have a greater probability than others of making a mistake that will flag the attention of the IRS. While everyone fears an audit, your chances can be reduced from last year’s one in 154 if you just take a few precautions and pay attention to detail. According to the Tax Club, many tax returns are subject to a computer selection process that works by assigning a number value to certain key items on your return. If the total number score exceeds the minimum set by the IRS, the computer will single out the return. They specif ically suggest small business owners pay attention to: 1. Self-Employment
The IRS is more likely to audit your return if you own a business and you reported little taxes compared to your peers. The IRS very carefully scrutinizes complicated structures designed to reduce income, especially those that are set up offshore.
2. Filing Late
If you can't file on time, then you should file an automatic extension request, or you risk attracting the attention of the IRS.
must meet in order to deduct this expense. Your home office must be used exclusively as your principal place of business or where you meet with customers in the ordinary course of your business. Your home office qualifies as your principal place of business if you use it for administrative and/or management activities and you have nowhere else to do those activities.
6. Report All Income
It is important that you report all Form 1099 and Form W-2 income, no matter how small an amount that might be, and that the figures on your return match those on the Forms W-2 and 1099 that were received by the IRS. For more tax related information, check out the small business section of //www.irs. gov. u
3. Shoddy Filings
The IRS doesn't like sloppy returns. Fill out your return in a neat and organized fashion.
4. Mistakes
If you fill in the wrong social security number or make a mathematical error on your return, it might not result in an audit, but the IRS will pull it. About 20% of all manually filed returns have at least one error, compared with an error rate of 0.5% for returns filed online according to Yahoo! Finance. Of course, if an error results in an underpayment of taxes, you may face a penalty.
5. A Home Office
People who work out of a home office and claim it as a business expense are more likely to trigger an IRS audit. "This will raise a pink flag, rather than a red flag," says Martin Nissenbaum, National Director of Personal Income Tax Planning at Ernst & Young. "It obviously does heighten the profile of your return." There are certain requirements you

The Busy Person’s Guide to Fitness: at the Office, on the Road, while at Home
By day, Leah Simmons is a marketing and training coordinator at Johnstone Supply in Sioux Falls. By night, when the cardigan comes off and the roller skates go on, she morphs into Julia Wild, a powerhouse jammer for the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz. Although Simmons doesn’t have the kind of superhuman powers found in Marvel comic books, she does have the very supernatural ability to pull double duty as a businesswoman during the day and a bonebruising derby doll at night. For Simmons, who spends a lot of time on the road, maintaining a fit physique and a healthy lifestyle off the track and away from her training routine can be a challenge. Her guidelines for staying slim and sane while at work or play can help the less physically aggressive stay in shape in 2014. Simmons’ first tip to keep your body in prime condition is pay attention to nutrition. “When you travel for work you’re often going out with clients for lunch every day, and that means dessert, drinks, the whole thing. I try to pack healthy snacks, and if I know I’m going to have drinks later on, I eat less early in the day.” Simmons recommends getting a bottle of water at evening mixers, instead of loading up on mixed drinks or beer. This is a great rule of thumb for people who travel, says Ryan Burggraff, a personal trainer at 24/7 Fitness. “Good nutrition is just as important as physical activity, and drinking too much while on the road can add a lot of empty calories.” Simmons’ next travel fitness tip is make time for exercise. “I can’t control whether or not my hotel will have a gym, but I can control how early I get up,” she says. “If I know I’ll be busy all day, I try to get up early enough to jump rope or do pushups or burpees. Ten minutes of jumping rope is like 20 minutes on the treadmill, and a jump rope doesn’t take up much space in my bag.” Packing a jump rope or even a set of resistance bands is an optimal idea for anyone who travels, Burggraff says, noting that for anyone who is serious about staying fit on the road a little bit of this kind of planning is all it takes. “More and more hotels have gyms or fitness centers now, so people can plan ahead before they book a hotel,” he says. “I like to recommend taking a set of resistance bands because they usually come with 3 levels and you can get them for around fifteen dollars.” Along with staying active while on the road, both Burgraff and Simmons say that good nutrition habits and regular physical activity are important parts of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Remember to consult your physician before you begin any rigorous exercise routine. u
How to Stay Fit at Work: Desk yoga is a great way to relieve tension in your back and neck. 1. T o do the neck roll, close your eyes and gently roll your head from side to side on your neck. Envision the stress melting away. 2. S eated bend. While sitting in your chair, bend over at the waist, stretching your arms up and out behind you. 3. S eated spinal twist. Also while sitting in your chair, turn your body to the right or left with feet on the floor. Grasp arm rest and feel the stretch in your back.
Stay Fit while Traveling: The burpee push-up. Stand with your feet hip width apart, lower into a squat and drop down with your hands in front of you, then into the pushup position. Complete one pushup, then jump back to your feet and repeat or include an alternating hand kick. Holding your hand out in front of you, palm down, do a high-knee raise until your knee connects with your hand. Alternate with jumping rope for a cardio boost. Run through these steps for 20 minutes a day while you are away from home and you’re sure to get your heart rate up.
Stay Fit at Home: Walk off last year’s weight. All you need is one mile a day to drop 10 pounds in a year. Focus on adding whole grains to your diet, try cutting out red meat one day a week and double your veggie intake with each meal. Although these suggestions don’t come with a fancy new gym T-shirt, with just a few adjustments to your work and travel routine you’ll be able to button that dress jacket once again!

Get your brand in shape for 2014
One of the most effective ways to grow your business is to create and support a strong brand image. A brand isn’t a logo or a sign, but what your business stands for in the mind of the consumer. In other words, a promise of what your customers can expect to experience when they choose you. Brands that become stagnant risk losing relevancy with their customer base. Times change, your customers change, your competitive environment changes and your brand message needs to keep pace with all those factors. Keeping your brand relevant over the years means asking yourself a few key questions about your brand.
1. Does my message and visual brand appear dated? 2. H as my target market changed? Have they become younger? Older? More wired? Etc. 3. D oes my brand lack relevancy today? Is what my brand offers still what people want? 4. D oes my brand promise fail to differentiate me from my competitors?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is probably time to update your brand or risk diminishing returns on your marketing investment. The easiest way to revamp a brand is to contact a professional marketing firm. An advertising or marketing agency will most likely propose a brand audit. This process reviews the “health of your brand through internal and external research to identify your strengths, weakness, industry shifts and market differentiators. This information will then be used to leverage any existing brand equity while redefining your brand messaging to better position your company to align with your customers wants and needs. A relevant brand provides consumers a compelling reason to choose you over your competition, which is why keeping your brand in top shape may be the most important business investment you can make this year. u January 2014 | BizNOWmagazine.com | 27

DEEP conditioning treatment you can MAKE AT HOME: Mix coconut milk with four tablespoons of lime juice (fresh limes work best), and apply all over hair. Put a plastic cap on..let sit 30 minutes, applying heat with blow dryer every so often. Shampoo and condition, then style as usual. This treatment puts protein back into the hair and adds shine. *Added bonus: you can refrigerate any left-overs from the mask and re-use once a week until hair is silky smooth.
