It’s easy to get focused on our own journey in life, our own goals. But when you help others to win, you set yourself up for success. Think of the mentors you’ve had in your life – what did their guidance help you accomplish? If you want to go far in life, help someone else go far. Sometimes the simplest actions go a long way: Introduce others to helpful people you know. Be quick to share your knowledge and expertise. Put in a good word for someone whenever you can, make a phone call to help them get ahead. Use your influence to help someone else succeed. When you share unselfishly and help others reach your level, you can be sure that somebody will be there to lift you higher too. The idea is to live with integrity (read more on page 17) and inspire it in others. Take a moment to notice the people around you. Who needs what you have to offer? Where can you spark a fire today? You’re building a legacy when you help others become a success. Be a Firelighter. Spark a dream in someone and watch their dreams ignite.

BUSINESS MOMENTUM
We’ve all seen it with sports teams: a team on a winning streak just can’t seem to do anything wrong – they make crazy wild catches, they complete unbelievable over-the-top plays, they have unstoppable energy and enthusiasm. In short, they have great momentum! You can have momentum in business too. Here’s how to get it, and keep it going once you’ve got it. Because if you take off running at warp speed and keep the energy going, you can blast your way to success! Momentum in business is when you rack up a series of successes, one after another – boom, boom, boom – fast and furious like bottle pop fireworks. If you’re an entrepreneur, you’re attaining fast growth and business is booming! If you’re in sales, you’re on a hot streak, closing deal after deal. No matter what line of work you’re in, you create momentum by having a plan, and then riding the resulting wave of success. When you’ve got good mojo, you’re working hard, and you are achieving goals. And that sense of triumph pushes you to continue. But how do you build solid momentum? How do you create a steady stream of success? Here are some tips that can help:
• Make a plan and doggedly pursue it. Before you can take
off on your winning streak, you need to set clear goals. Begin with a vision statement, like, “I will be the top sales person at my company.” Then list the steps to attain your goal: “I’ll make 20 cold calls a day and close 3 sales.” That kind of clear plan will keep you on track, setting you up for future successes.
• Ready, Set, GOOOOO! Now is not the time to be
timid. Take off full throttle if you want to move up in your professional career. You are a missile: nothing can stop you. You’ll reach cruising speed faster and ram through any setbacks if you push off with a blast!
• Leap beyond your comfort zone. Don’t just step out;
jumpstart. Sure, it’s scary. But big rewards depend on big leaps. And if you find yourself screaming, “What was I thinking?” that’s okay; don’t panic. Crush any negative thought that comes into your mind. For you, it’s only full steam ahead.
• Focus on what energizes you. Maybe it’s daily
motivational podcasts, a favorite book, a person who always inspires you. Whatever it takes, turn to the things that keep you positive and that push you to strive for the top. Attend
seminars, make friends with successful people. Find the fun in your work. Relive your last success. Whatever makes you feel good will motivate you to keep going. Find it. Pursue it. Keep focusing on it. You can’t build momentum without enthusiasm, and no one can continually recharge their own batteries; we all need inspiration.
• Always take your mission with you. In the daily grind of
life, it can be hard to keep your goals in mind. But you need to. So leave reminders of your goals everywhere. Jot them down in different colors, leave notes on your desk or write them on your mirror in lipstick. Take your mission with you on the road, too – keep a copy of your goals in your pocket, purse or smart phone. In fact, sleeping with them isn’t a bad idea!
• Jump on opportunities. They are out there, everywhere,
and when you see one, seize it. In fact, why stop with one; seize two opportunities if you can and do your best to juggle both at the same time. If you wait, the opportunity might disappear. Sure, you can always find another opportunity, but why miss out? People with momentum grab opportunities. They don’t hesitate. They act.
• Don’t stop! Momentum breeds momentum. Build on your success. Once you reach one goal, keep going. Other people take breaks between projects to savor their success. Not you. Use the momentum you’ve created and ride the high from achieving that goal to get to the next one. Good energy amplifies!
• Evaluate. Once a month, do a self-check. Are you meeting
your goals? What can you do better? Are there obstacles you can eliminate? Get rid of anything draining, anything that isn’t helping you to get to your destiny.
Once you’ve built momentum, you’ll be like a speeding bullet and nothing will stop you! The hard work, the commitment, the perseverance will all pay off. You will feel invincible. You will accomplish your dreams. And best of all, as you rise higher, you can help others build momentum and reach their goals too. u

Take Me Out to the
Ball Game!
Living the Dream!
Matt Tramp Hit a Homerun with a Career in Baseball Think back to your early school days and what you wanted to be when you grew up. I remember looking in the bathroom mirror, holding a bottle of air freshener and reading the descriptive paragraph on the can like a television spokesperson. Now some 35+ years later, I still have the opportunity to do radio and television commercials. It’s amazing how our dreams can become our reality! Matt Tramp’s dream is baseball. The 23-year-old from Sioux Falls says, “Before I could walk, I was always throwing whatever I could find, playing catch with my dad.” Tramp gets to live his dream every day as the Clubhouse Manager for the Sioux Falls Canaries and Owner of South Dakota Baseball Academy. Not only has he played baseball for years, Tramp has been a part of the Canaries since he first served as a bat boy while in middle school in 2001. “I gained a lot of experience being a bat boy. I was at the park for 7 hours a day and saw things that needed to be done, so I did them and I was able to move up from there.” And move up he did to the position of clubhouse manager, a job that keeps him “beyond busy” for 108 days out of the year. His duties include being the bullpen catcher, pitching for batting practice, handling all the food for players in the clubhouse, taking care of all their equipment, uniforms, errands, picking up guests from the airport to attend games, cleaning the clubhouse and doing laundry. Did I say laundry? Because I mean, LOTS of laundry! Tramp does anywhere from 10 to12 loads each night after a game.
Despite the long hours and lack of flexibility for four months of the year, Tramp loves his life! “I once had a college professor tell me that I was living in a dream world in front of the entire class. Later that day, I received an email from the Twins in Ft. Myer’s, FL offering me a job to be the clubhouse manager.” Tramp is proof positive that with hard work, perseverance and a sense of humor – that dreams do come true. “You have to work hard and you have to respect and live the lifestyle of a professional baseball player, and thanks to the loving encouragement and great upbringing from my family, I’m able to do that!” So what’s the next dream for Tramp? He with business partner and former Canaries baseball player, Trevor Lawhorn, own and operate the South Dakota Baseball Academy. It’s their dream to cultivate and showcase talented baseball players in the state, getting them noticed by colleges and universities and of course, the big leagues. “I’ll always be involved some way in baseball. We want to cultivate the amazing athletic talent that’s here and put South Dakota on the map!” Tramp’s had two big dreams in his life: baseball and law enforcement. He’s living one and working on the other by taking classes when possible and tests when offered. Who knows when he’ll trade in his baseball uniform for one with a badge and handcuffs, but we can be certain that he will be in hot pursuit regardless! Even if we never become the racecar driver, the professional athlete or the pop star we so badly wished we were, we can still appreciate the talent and determination it takes others to get there. Regardless of how old we are, there are still many more dreams to turn into reality! u

How to Deal with Anger at Work
by Scott Hofer
Summer is a time for sparks to fly and passions to flare. Unfortunately, sometimes this means confrontations at work. Whether you’re dealing with a volatile colleague, or it’s you trying to hold your temper in check, BizNOW has you covered on effective ways to deal with anger issues – from personality conflicts to arguments in the workplace. • Take a step back: Conflict at work is inevitable. Rather
than viewing it as dysfunction or something to avoid at all costs, remember, even reasonable people disagree from time to time. Take a deep breath and evaluate the situation. Confrontation is a normal interaction; but don’t go into it while you’re still seeing red. Instead, focus on building a solid argument for what you believe in.
• Evaluate the issue. Fighting for a business practice or
decision that you believe will make your whole organization better is important for maintaining a strong ethic in your industry. But when conflict arises over petty or personal issues, ask yourself, is this worth it? So before you choose to confront someone, size-up the situation; often it’s not worthy of conflict in the first place. And since workplace confrontations can involve the risk of harming your career, pick your battles carefully!
• Keep it classy: Workplace disagreements should be civil.
After all, both parties are on the same team and financially tied to the success of the company. As tempers flare don’t forget that how you deal with conflict says a lot about your character. Use professional language and professional tactics to handle a confrontation and reach a resolution. When unprofessionalism prevails, the individuals involved end up feeling frustrated and the company suffers.
• Assess the other point of view: Have you tried to
worth your time? Often people enter into confrontations at work with the same end goal in mind, and only different methods to attain those goals. Be sure each point of view is addressing the same issue, otherwise reaching a resolution will be impossible.
• Illustrate your understanding: When in conflict with a
coworker, let them know you want to understand their point of view. Letting the other person know you are considering their ideas will help diffuse the situation and give your own arguments credibility. Understanding other points of view will also help you to be open to compromise – an essential for positive conflict resolution. Of course you may encounter people who refuse to compromise or who reason irrationally during times of confrontation, and resolving the issue one-on-one is unrealistic. When confrontation has become personal or unproductive, don’t be afraid to ask a trusted mediator to step into the situation. If you have built a strong argument and been professional in your disagreement, odds are you will have the strong case from an outsider’s perspective, too.
Whatever the resolution, take a step back and a deep breath one more time. Now that the disagreement has been settled, it’s time to move forward – don’t hold a grudge. Coworkers are teammates and any dispute between them shouldn’t take precedence over the future of the business. Put your problems aside and work to normalize the relationship, this will help make the workplace a more effective workspace for all employees. u

Before you Wave a White Flag, Try these Tips to
In today’s hectic and competitive marketplace, good leadership skills are more valuable than ever. The best leaders are always improving their leadership skills; it’s a life-long process.
WHITE
Turn a Failing Business Around by Scott Hofer
Competition in business can be fierce and often involves considerable ups and downs for a company. If tough times have left your business struggling and you’re ready to put up the white flag, consider these options to turn things around. At BizNOW we hope to be your white knight, so we researched successful methods to improve a struggling business. Now, we’re bringing the best of these ideas to you. First of all, if you believe your business is falling behind, congratulations, you’ve taken the most important step to fix it. Before any attempt at improvement can be made you have to recognize that there’s a problem. This should be done in the most brutally honest way possible, since time is of the essence to figure out where the weaknesses are. Once the problems are realized, don’t let them intimidate you! Chances are you still have time to turn it around and improve business performance. Once you have examined the flaws in your current business, try these techniques to push your business forward.
• Back to basics: You know the problems at hand, but have you discovered the successful parts of your business? Identify what is working now and what has worked well in the past. These are the ideas which have brought in revenue – and will likely continue to make your company profitable. And focusing on your strengths will also help you get the energy to face the challenges ahead.
• Weigh your options: Determining what would work to
improve your business starts with compiling all of the options
available. Be honest and thorough. Brainstorm some new ideas. Then consider the options and the best/worst case scenarios for implementation. Once you have created a list, ask an expert or trusted observer for their opinion. Don’t be afraid to get help!
• Create a list: With trusted counsel and opinions on your
situation, it is time for action. The simplest way to make sure you get done everything you want to accomplish is to make a list and check off tasks as you complete them. Stay focused on making the improvements into reality by taking action and continually assessing progress.
When times are tough, business professionals often look upon their work as failure, so let past successes be your inspiration. Tough times are nothing new and chances are your business has what it takes to weather the storm. Remember, most of the time struggling businesses do not need a dramatic turnaround. Usually, the best solution is to focus on small changes that make a big difference. Finally, realize it doesn’t happen overnight; so make patience your secret to perseverance.

Get out of a Slump & Stop Singin’ the Blues:
How to Re-Inspire Staff
Everybody knows work isn’t always fun and games. In fact, sometimes it can get downright boring. If you’ve ever felt disconnected from the work you do, you are not alone. A new Gallup poll says that 70% of employees say they’re not “engaged” at work.* If you or your employees have found yourself in a slump lately, chances are you need to look for little ways to brighten up the day. BizNOW compiled a list of helpful hints for you and your office so you can stop singing the workplace blues and rediscover that happy place to get work done:
1. D rinks- Why not rejuvenate the office with an array of drinks… no, not alcoholic drinks! Instead focus on productive drinks, like fancy coffee or nutritious smoothies. Both will provide workers with a slight boost both physically and mentally.
2. O utdoor Meetings- Chances are if you work in an office
you may miss out on some beautiful summer days. So why not try moving one meeting a week outside? With a change of pace and surroundings, who knows what inspiration might strike!
3. C reate a Company Sports Team- When workers
interact only in a business setting they often don’t build fulfilling friendships. Try organizing outside events and give the office a way to interact, laugh and connect over something other than work.
4. S ummer Dress Code- Maybe you’ve already implemented “casual Fridays” at your office (because everyone loves an office that lets them wear jeans on Fridays!), so why not extend the idea? Start a casual dress policy on days without important meetings or new client visits. During the summer this will be sure to be a big hit! (Biz tip: keep a blazer in the car for impromptu meetings or interviews that crop up; you can throw it on and you’re good to go!)
*“State of the American Workplace Poll”
5. I nnovation Days- Employees everywhere have good ideas,
but these are often pushed aside because of a heavy workload. Now companies like 3M and Google are giving their employees one day a month to focus on what they would like to improve. Its success so far has prompted more companies, big or small, to look into this option.
6. D iscounted Tickets- Not everybody in the office is going
to share the same interests, but almost everybody will appreciate the option of corporate discounts. Whether it’s discounted sports tickets, amusement park passes or museums discounts, providing a more economical means to summer fun is sure to boost company morale.
7. J ust-for-Fun Classes- Allow your workers paid time off
to take a class or workshop in any area of interest. Pursuing personal interests will provide a benefit to the company and employees will appreciate the freedom. Plus, just-for-fun classes are likely to encourage creativity and inspiration that will boost productivity back on the job.
8. O ffice Makeovers- People can tire of the same
surroundings, so rearranging the office from time to time can be a great way to motivate the team AND get rid of excessive clutter. Try changing the office scenery with suggestions from the entire office, the end result will be a rejuvenated workspace. u July 2013 | BizNOWmagazine.com | 13

The Results are in and it just may Surprise you!
Business has gone viral, and who would have thought that the fastest growing demographic on Twitter is now the 55-64 age group? With 79% expansion since 2012, these experienced professionals are becoming just as connected as their younger counterparts. According to smallbusiness. yahoo.com, it’s not just Twitter that’s seeing growth in the upper age brackets. It’s also Facebook and Google+; both have seen the most growth in the 45-54 age group, increasing by 46% and 56% respectively. The trend makes it even more important for businesses to evaluate online presence. With a widening market, the products, services and branding offered online should consider the potential to reach consumers of any age. As the world uses these free, go-anywhere networking sites to promote their products and services, keep in touch and get the latest news, your online marketing strategy for your business should include the 45 and older age demographic. They’re important, they’re connected, and they’re going online in record numbers! Market research shows that it isn’t just the internet that boasts these numbers. Older adults are also accessing their social networking sites via their smart phones. With simplified versions of social media apps available, its easier than ever to get connected on the go.

Prezi vs. PowerPoint:
WAR
The of Presentation Software! Here are some things to consider that will help you determine which software to use for your next presentation:
1. F unctionality: Do you need text, graphics, or
both? If you need more text, choose PowerPoint; its linear layout may help in the progression of your text-based presentation. You can insert photos in PowerPoint of course, but they aren’t flashy and you don’t have a lot of options with layout to add some pizazz. If it’s graphics you need, Prezi may be your best choice. Graphics express a new look on Prezi that can incorporate all of your text in addition to an interactive presentation, which gives you more razzledazzle and may help the audience remember the presentation better.
2. A ccess: One program you have to email as an attachment, whereas the other can be accessed online. I’m sure you guessed it—Prezi is easier to access because it’s online and doesn’t require any additional work from you except internet. Plus, Prezi is free! We do have to give kudos to
Microsoft, though -- they released a PowerPoint app for smart phones which lets a person access their own presentations when needed on the go. Also, PowerPoint doesn’t need internet connection – which can be a big advantage if you are traveling to do a presentation and aren’t able to connect to the internet.
3. A uthenticity: PowerPoint has been around
much longer, and in being around longer, has dealt with most of its growing pains. Prezi is still in the beginning stages of its existence, and is still battling questions about usability and possible glitches. Prezi, although well developed, will have a few years before it fully catches on based on technology learning curves and popularity.
Bottom line: Whichever program you choose
to use, we suggest you try both at least once for the same type of presentation, and test it out to get feedback. Overall, Prezi vs. PowerPoint will simply depend on the type of message you are giving, so discover which works best for your audience. u

ETHICS INTEGRITY AMBITIONS
Integrity: It Matters One of the most valuable tools for a professional is having personal integrity. Employers intuitively and intentionally seek out workers who demonstrate integrity. It’s a proven business asset according to a study of 500,000 employees in 85 countries conducted by the Corporate Executive Board in Arlington, Virginia. They found that companies with high integrity cultures are 67% less likely to see significant incidents of misconduct like accounting irregularities or insider trading. One legendary investor and philanthropist, Warren Buffet, ranked integrity his number one hiring priority. And many employers screen job applicants using integrity tests that assess a candidate’s potential for honesty in regards to theft and counterproductive behavior.
Why does integrity matter? Your marketability and career depends on it! Honest people draw out the best in others and inspire a great work ethic, at any level of a corporate ladder. Transparency is always a better way to establish your credibility and maintain relationships throughout your career. When you consistently practice integrity, it becomes natural. People with integrity are more trusted and relied upon in the workplace, and they encourage others to act with integrity too. Here are some ideas to help demonstrate your honesty while on the job.
Be trustworthy- Seems obvious but it’s so important – when you demonstrate that you follow through on your promises, honor workplace policies and speak with sincerity. Others will learn that you’ll make the right choices and you can trust your co-workers to do the same. Know your values- Know who you are and what you
decisions you have made and feel right about them. Know where your line is and be cautious of when you’re nearing it. Say what you believe and, more importantly, act accordingly.
Admit your mistakes- Even the most practiced
professionals make mistakes. The best of these will acknowledge their shortcomings, learn from their mistakes and help others avoid the same pitfalls. When you’re upfront about a weakness, those around you will recognize your honesty and be encouraged to follow suit.
Say no- Don’t be afraid to stand up for your values and say no to a situation that violates them. You might have to say no even to your boss, but don’t let that stop you, your values must come first. Take the high road. You’ll sleep better at night! u

Read On: Learn More, Faster
Good leaders are always learning. Not only is it important to select great reading material, but it’s also important to consider how you fit reading into your life. Sometimes good intentions can be pushed aside to make room for another lunch meeting or put off for a less hectic evening. Chairman and CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishing and author of a New York Times bestseller Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, Michael Hyatt observes that digesting books can a business leader's greatest tool because they can stretch your brain and generate knowledge.
With these tips for reading well and reading more, you'll make the most of your time investment, maximize your learning capacity and easily incorporate new books into your already loaded schedule.
• Read multiple books at any given time.
Why read just one book when you can read two at a time? Learn more, faster, by reading several books at once. Rotate subjects or genres to stay engaged – especially if one of the subjects you're reading is less appealing.
• Set reading goals. Assign chapter or page number
goals to accomplish each day or week to motivate yourself to move through the material. (This tip only works if you set excuses aside and dive on in!)
• Read in more than one place. Stow the books
on your list in convenient places – your briefcase, purse, gym bag or different places in your home so picking one up is always convenient.
• Take a book break. Just 10 or 15 minutes of a reading break during the workday helps you reach your reading goals and recharges your mind.
• Make use of latest technologies.
“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” – Sir Richard Steele
E-books have adjustable font sizes, vision-friendly screens and make it easy to carrying thousands of books wherever you go. Or, try audio book apps for “reading” on the go. u

Books We've [Red]
The best leaders are life-long learners. They're curious observers, good listeners and most importantly, avid readers. Reading is the quickest way to a trove of knowledge and expertise that has the capacity to give you a leg up in business, says Chairman and CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishing, Michael Hyatt. Staying up-to-date is as important to your career as other professional development opportunities, so to get library started, Biz asked some friends about the business books they found most helpful. And be sure to tell us about your favorite book, series or author on Twitter @BizNowMagazine or our Facebook page!
The Wizard of Ads Trilogy by Roy Williams • The Wizard of Ads: Turning Words into Magic and Dreamers into Millionaires • S ecret Formulas of the Wizard of Ads: Turning Paupers into Princes and Lead into Gold • M agical Worlds of the Wizard of Ads: Tools and Techniques for Prof itable Persuasion “My favorite books about marketing are from Roy Williams. He has three awesome books – I actually read one of these books on my honeymoon.” - John Small, Sunny Radio
Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel H. Pink "Drive is a fantastic book on human motivation that dispels the myth that carrots and sticks (rewards and punishment) are the only way to motivate individuals. True motivation comes from focusing on creating an environment where individuals can experience autonomy, mastery and purpose. People have an embedded drive where they want to be in control over their own lives, to create new knowledge and to have a sense of purpose in life. This book has become one of my favorites and has changed how I view interacting and motivating people to get higher levels of performance." - Bruce Watley, MBA, Assistant Professor, Entrepreneurial Studies, University of Sioux Falls 22 | BizNOWmagazine.com | July 2013
Like a Virgin by Richard Branson “My favorite book about business, it chronicles Branson's life as he quit school to start a magazine, added a records by mail business and eventually started Virgin Records (and many other businesses). If you're a business owner, you need to read this book. It was amazing to hear how he does some of the things that have made him a billionaire.” - John Small, Sunny Radio
Marketing Lessons From The Grateful Dead by David Meerman Scott and Brian Halligan
The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You
“I bought it because the title made me smile. I was certainly impressed by the content. I had never considered myself a “dead head” but I can see why so many people loved them. As marketers they were amazing too!”
“Smart leaders learn from others. This is a book that will change how you look at leadership. It’s got pearls of wisdom about both success and failure. And I really like the theme of spirituality woven into the book; good leadership is also about being a good steward."

Review by Tessa Audet Fashion photos by Jayne Erickson Fashion provided by the Buckle, Empire Mall Models: Michelle Daggett Assistant Manager, Dress Barn Chad Pederson Sales Manager, Holiday Inn City Centre
Our models Michelle Daggett and Chad Pederson are rocking the jeans Biz chose at the Buckle in the Empire Mall. Pairing jeans with a blouse or tailored top adds a bit of sophistication to the look. For women, a bit of bling on the back pocket is always a fun away to dress up jeans. For men, the Buckle offers jeans with a slimmer fit for a cleaner look. Jeans can look professional and be officeappropriate depending on your company. Pair them with a black blazer and you’re good to go: stylish and professional!

Just JEANS Maybe you have casual Fridays at your company, maybe you are lucky enough to be able to wear jeans at work every day, or maybe you just slip on a pair of your faves when you get home. But no matter what; jeans are a part of our culture. They are an American wardrobe staple, and the best part is you can dress them up or down. They’re just as perfect for special occasions as they are for an easy, casual event.

TRIVIA
Blue jeans were invented in 1873 by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss. Originally designed for cowboys, they caught on in the 1950s when teens started wearing them (especially as part of Greaser subculture). Today jeans come in many styles and f its, including skinny, tapered, slim, straight, boot cut, flare, low waist, ultra-low waist – and they are worn the world over.
