10 Time Management Tips:

Go from being one step behind to

two steps ahead! You’re busy. Always busy. The hours in the day seem to slide away from you and you’re left with nothing done and even more to do. We understand you’re in a rush, so Biz put together a quick and tidy list to help you tackle your day in a more effective way and maybe even find that elusive thing called “free time.” So got a spare minute? Ready, Set, Read! 1. Make a to-do list every day before work and carry it with you everywhere. 2. Record your activities, thoughts and ideas for one week. See where you are wasting time and being less productive. 3. Cut bigger jobs into smaller, more manageable tasks. 4. Schedule a time for interruptions, like office hours, when

people can stop in and ask you questions.

5. Take a few minutes before each task to decide what results you want and what absolutely has to be accomplished. 6. Reduce distractions like Facebook and Twitter or

those 15 minute phone calls from your mother. (See #4)

7. Be honest about what’s most important on your list. It might not be fun but it needs to get done. 8. Try to set a time each day for busy work like replying to emails and following up on phone calls.

What do billionaires know that the rest of us don’t?

by Scott Hofer

There are a reported 442 billionaires in the US today. On a global scale, America boasts the lion’s share of billionaires at 35% of the list. To put that in perspective, the US is home to more billionaires than Russia, China, India, Germany, Turkey, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Brazil combined! That’s a lot of billionaires.

8 things successful people do 8 | BizNOWmagazine.com | June 2013

So what separates those with staggering success from the rest of us? What do they know that we don’t? At BizNOW, we’ve done a little research and compiled a list of things that very successful people do – to help YOU achieve your goals and maybe become the next billionaire on the list!

1. They set specific goals: Successful people set SMART goals:

goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. They know what they are looking for and why they are willing to fight for it. Smart goals have a greater chance of achievement because they have defined parameters. Whether it is losing weight, eating better, making millions or getting a new business off the ground – specific goals are vital. You can achieve almost any goal if you plan your steps wisely. Review your commitments and goals. Put first things first.

People. Places. Things. It’s about the reaction, the moment, the angle. It’s about the idea, not the filters used to get there. It’s about seeing things differently. That’s what I do.

~Jayne Erickson

2. They take action: There are a lot of people who dream about success but never find it. Why? Because they just don’t take action. Successful people put aside fear and take the necessary steps to make things happen. They go after what they want. Once the challenge has been sized up there is nothing to fear, only work to finish. 3. They are self-disciplined: Successful people have the selfdiscipline to persevere. They would rather give things up now than face the pain of regret later for living a life that “could have been.” Self-disciplined people motivate themselves to continue their action steps and hang on through adversity by sheer willpower. 4. They focus on improvement, not perfection: Successful

people don’t try to make everything perfect; they just keep moving forward. They take small steps to achieve big goals. They learn from mistakes. They focus on making small, continuous improvements and achieving those benchmarks helps them take on even bigger challenges the next time.

5. They build positive networks: People who are successful associate with others who are likeminded and supportive. They find people who create energy instead of energy-drainers; they reach out and connect with positive people. They put together an “inner circle” of trusted advisors to help them become more capable and successful than they would ever have been alone. 6. They stretch outside the comfort zone: Successful people don’t let a lack of skills or inexperience stop them. Great opportunities in life force people to grow; that means we may not always feel completely ready to take a chance, but if we stretch outside the comfort zone, we can often achieve amazing results. 7. They are self-confident: Successful people believe in

themselves. They know no matter what, they will be able to make the best of any situation. This is why successful people spend their time dealing with the unknown rather than fearing it.

8. They acknowledge risk and its rewards: Successful people recognize great risk as a precursor to great rewards. The bigger the risk, the bigger the potential payoff. They know they may have to sacrifice to get ahead, but successful people do what it takes to build their empire. Calculating the risk, sizing up the task and then relentlessly working toward your goals is the basic equation for success. u

Creating a

VISION BOARD! How to Make One; Why You Should!

How do you push your career or business to the next level? You might try creating a “vision board.” Popularized by Oprah and used by successful entrepreneurs and visionaries everywhere, a vision board is an inspiring tool that can spark your next business move. It works like this: when you start thinking about something, that object or goal is suddenly everywhere. Start obsessing about buying a new Dodge Journey, for example, and it seems like you see one at every intersection! And that’s the idea behind a vision board: you’re envisioning – and manifesting – what you want to have happen in your life. By focusing on your goals, you’ll bring them to fruition. Empowerment Coach Melanie Brown has been utilizing vision boards for over 20 years. She has personally seen goals become a reality for herself, as well as for many of the people she has had the opportunity to coach. So what exactly is a Vision Board? It’s a collage of the items or images that represent the goals you would like to reach. They should be kept in a place where you will see them daily. “We become what we think about – if you can see it in your mind, you can create it,” Brown says. “Open yourself to the opportunity of what could be instead of what is. The power of the dream is limitless.” Vision boards gained popularity in 2006 with the release of the book and movie The Secret. Research shows that if you can see an outcome clearly, you are more likely to achieve it.

Brown suggests 6 simple steps in creating a vision board: 1. Prepare your Mind. Choose images for your vision board that are personally inspiring. You can’t cheat off your neighbor! Their dream isn’t yours. You can only dream something into reality if you truly want it. 2. Create the right atmosphere. To open the door to creativity, put yourself into the right environment: play music that makes you happy, find quotes which inspire you. These tricks help to bring your mind to a place where creative magic happens. 3. Let go of the past. Forget about all of the negativity. Forget about all of the times someone said you couldn’t, forget about the times you failed. This is a new beginning, a new chapter with an entirely new outlook and perspective.

4. Let go of limits! Imagine: what would you do with all of

5. Find pictures or visual representations that match your thoughts. Magazines, books or the internet are great locations to find the images, but they need to be truly inspired.

6. The 6th step is by far the most critical. You have to BELIEVE. You have to believe that what you want CAN happen to you – believe that through drive, determination and collaboration, you will be able to see your vision board dreams become a reality.

Is it possible you really will receive that big promotion? Or have the kind of life you’ve been dreaming about? Yes! Will it only become a reality if you rip it out of a magazine and glue it to your mirror or vision board? Not necessarily. But you never know. A vision board isn’t magical, but it can help you define what you want in life and achieve it. Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” What do you think? What do you visualize for your life? Where could a vision board take you? u

How can a Vision Board help a business or individual become more successful? Creating a vision board can help a company or person become more successful by helping them focus on their dreams, goals and plans. It’s a sort of “blue print” for success. It’s what author Deepak Chopra calls the “law of intention and desire,” which states that whatever energy we send into the Universe will be reflected back to us. In other words, what we think about, we attract into our lives. That’s good news because it means that we can manifest our visions and goals by visualizing things just as we want them to be. The vision board helps us to visualize our success in a very concrete way.

5 Tools Be a better leader:

12 | BizNOWmagazine.com | June 2013

to Improve your Leadership Skills In today’s hectic and competitive marketplace, good leadership skills are more valuable than ever. From a committee chair to the CEO, leadership is valuable to anyone looking to get the most from their team -- and businesses looking to improve the bottom line. The best leaders are always improving their leadership skills; it’s a life-long process.

Here are some tips to becoming a more effective leader: Illustrate: One perk of being a leader is that it gives you

the power to move a team toward the dream you envision. The tough part is communicating that vision to everyone on your team. Leaders must be able to illustrate their vision in such a way that followers can see a crystal clear image of the goal in their mind; they can feel it, hear it, smell it, and really understand the vision.

Motivate: Now that the vision has been laid out,

make sure to get everybody on board with it. Emphasize the tactics that will be used to achieve this goal and the benefits it will provide to everybody. Motivating involves selling the argument to those who will be working toward it and inspiring them to work as hard as possible to fulfill their role in the vision.

Take this Quiz to Rate Your Leadership Skills! Leadership Quiz 1. O thers have a clear vision of my plans and ideas. Never Sometimes Often Always

2. I inspire others to maximize their efforts. Never Sometimes Often Always

their all hinges upon the image you portray to your team. Hypocrites are not good leaders because they fail to hold the standards they have set for others, and this is usually apparent to their team. Instead, leaders need to lead from the front and use their behavior as an example. Being a role model for the type of behavior you expect is a key part of good leadership.

Be clear: Write down guidelines that clearly and concisely convey your expectations. List how the group will accomplish the objectives you want and explain why they are important. In turn others will take your rules more seriously, giving you more power as a leader. Best idea: have the group help in the goal-setting process, when possible. You will create more ownership and buy-in that way, and your team will be more willing to work toward a goal if they’ve helped in the process. Stimulate: People often think of new problems as

a bad thing; however, in the workplace things can get monotonous without some challenges. A good leader knows the abilities of others and then pushes them to take their skills to the next level. Provide your team with new challenges to overcome and ample support to achieve those goals. Inviting people to work on tasks based on their interests or allowing them to specialize in a field where they show promise will yield best results and help ensure your team is moving toward your vision effectively.

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” -- John F. Kennedy

3. I lead by example with high visibility. Never Sometimes Often Always

4. I use persuasion and efficient communication to get others to agree with me. Never Sometimes Often Always

5. I challenge others to try new things and invite them to explore their own ideas. Never Sometimes Often Always

6. I carefully match others to tasks based on their talents and interests. Never Sometimes Often Always

Never– 0 Sometimes– 1 Often– 2 Always– 3

Exemplify: Be a role model. Inspiring others to give it

15-18: Excellent. You are maximizing the abilities and resources around you through good leadership.

10-14: Great. There is little doubt you are a quality leader, but there is always room for improvement! 6-9: Good. While there are areas for improvement, your leadership skills make you an efficient, effective leader. 0-5: Needs Improvement. Leadership takes practice,

read the article and think about areas where your leadership skills are lacking. Start making small changes and see where they take you. June 2013 | BizNOWmagazine.com | 13

on the Go! Executive group lends a leg up for outstanding students and tomorrow’s business leaders. Some of today’s top South Dakota business executives are helping to inspire the next generation of business leaders. Sales and Marketing Executives, Inc. (SME) in Sioux Falls recently awarded scholarships to four outstanding SD college students who represent the future of business. SME is dedicated to building and supporting business leaders in the Sioux Empire. Sue Ford, Executive Director, says that in order to achieve the group’s goal of “promoting the future of business in SD, we want to support up and coming entrepreneurs.” Chair of the scholarship committee, Paul Krueger says, “There were 28 applications received for the scholarships which were narrowed to the four finalists who competed for the high money awards.” Each finalist proved their sales and marketing prowess in a 15-minute role-playing presentation where they promoted a product or service.

Meet this year’s scholarship winners and tomorrow’s bright business leaders:

Kelli Bones (of Henderson, MN and from the University

of Sioux Falls) received the top scholarship amount ($3,000) with her sales pitch for a third party e-commerce provider selling university merchandise.

Emily Murtha (of Sioux Falls and from South Dakota State University) was awarded $1,500 after presenting a sales pitch to a company to research and invest in a self-serve paint station to be placed in Wal-Mart Stores.

Erin Williams (of Watertown and from Augustana College) received $1,000 for her space-travel product that gave guests three destination options – including the moon! Working out

While you’re Working: the busy person’s guide to getting exercise on the job

It’s no secret, exercise and eating right will have a body feeling better, warding off disease, and looking great. What you might not know is that a quick workout can even help boost productivity in the workplace, says UCLA Health. Busy professionals – from CEOs to owners to employees – face the challenge of finding time for fitness in an already packed schedule. But the bottom line is that healthy employees are good for business. Increased productivity, lower healthcare costs, and happier workers mean you can’t afford not to make it a priority.

Fitting a workout into a busy schedule can be like fitting into your favorite jeans – it’s easier than you think! Take 5 minutes to take care of yourself – anywhere, anytime. You’ll be reenergized, feeling good about yourself and back to work in no time.

Take a stand: Instead of sitting while you make phone calls, try standing up. Take short breaks and walk around when you can. Something to think about: obese people sit 2.5 hours more per day than thin people, and people who sit all day have twice the rate of cardiovascular disease than people who stand.

Jump Rope: Fun for your kids, and a great exercise for you. Just 5 minutes will burn up to 68 calories.

Dance: Reenergize to your favorite throwback tunes or try something new like Zumba.

Meet on the go: Take your

next one-on-one to the trails, down the block, or even around your office building and let the movement fuel discussion and better brainstorming.

Plan ahead: Like any project or meeting,

it’s best to be prepared. Schedule time into your day – no meetings or interruptions allowed! Pack a bag the night before or lay out your gear ahead of time so you can’t give up your commitment.

Travel fit: Find hotels with fitness centers or make a point to take a walking or biking tour of your destination. Recreational opportunities abound in most communities.

Lunges: At the office, down the hallway or around the block, you’ll burn 45 calories in the time it takes to reheat your coffee. Stretch: Spending hours in a chair at the office or on the road can take a toll on your muscles, bring a yoga mat for a few minutes of flexibility. Run: Not everyone is a marathoner, but in 5 minutes, you burn 62 calories. Try a hilly route or interval running for variety and start to increase time or intensity as you build endurance. u

Quick Meals for Busy People On the Go It’s been a long day. You come home and the kids are hungry and cranky and maybe you are too. There seems to be nothing edible in the fridge and only crumbs in the cupboard. The last thing you feel like doing is slaving away in the kitchen for hours making a meal. You’re tempted to grab your phone and call the pizza place you have on speed dial, for the third time this week… We’ve all been there. Instead of retreating to the convenience of take out, again, Biz is here to provide you with some quick and delicious meals you can make that take just 25 minutes or less to prepare.

Fashion on the Go:

Shoes! Shoes! Shoes!

Review by Tessa Audet Fashion photos by Jayne Erickson Fashion provided by Shoe Carnival, Sioux Falls Model: Hope Store, Assistant Manager at Scooters Coffee As every woman knows, you can never have too many pairs of shoes, and every business woman knows your shoes are an important part of your professional look. That’s why for this issue, Biz is focusing on this season’s fashionable footwear for the busy woman on the go! Since its summer time, sandals can be an appropriate office look for those extra hot days, just make sure you aren’t breaking any office dress codes by wearing them. If sandals are a no-go, try adding a fun splash of color like the gorgeous red heels Hope is modeling. Metallic and metal studs are also a fun way to spice up a look like the black flats or the white sandals shown here – perfect for an outdoor meeting. Summer is a time for fun colors and showing your personality, so don’t be afraid to experiment a little and put your best foot forward!
