Early Morning Routines of Successful People:
The productive, the inspiring, and the slightly
crazy!
One of my latest goals in personal time management is learning to make the most of my mornings. To get started on The Biz Before Breakfast issue, our team took a look at what some of the world’s most successful people do to start their day. What are their routines? How do they leverage their mornings?
Well-known Early Risers Michelle Obama, First Lady – rises as early as 4:30 AM to exercise Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom – got up at 5:00 AM to listen to a favorite radio show Tim Armstrong, AOL CEO – wakes up at dawn and sends emails or works out
Tony Robbins, self-help author – does “an Hour of Power” every morning, with motivational phrases and visualization exercises
Craig Newmark, founder, Craigslist – starts his day focusing on customer service and answering complaints to keep him grounded
In researching this, we found out some crazy stuff. They’re getting up at the wee hours to do everything from a pre-dawn workout to answering complaints and emails! But no matter what their routines, they all had something in common: they all knew how to leverage their mornings to accomplish more. Experts say early risers are more proactive. They get better grades. They sleep better. They’re more optimistic. And they’re happier. Getting up early is considered a quality of very successful people, and certainly many powerful CEOs are early risers. So far, I’ve discovered that when I wake up and spend just 10 minutes visualizing all the great things I want to have happen today, I seem to experience more of them in my life. What’s YOUR early morning routine?

5 Ways to RETIRE EARLY & Retire RICH!
Smarter saving & quick spending is your ticket to retiring sooner! Here are a few strategies that can help YOU retire early, and possibly retire rich as well…. 1. Cut current spending. Use the money you are spending

People who retire early often use a variety of tactics: dividend stocks, rental properties, bonds.
3. Earn more money. Many retirees retire in steps. Think
about getting a part time job after retirement that you enjoy – it’s a way to add a little more income and generate some extra fun money. Don’t want to work when you retire? Start your own part time business now or find positions that are flexible with your current work schedule. Can you blog or write articles in your industry to earn extra money? of meditation in order to “start each day by nourishing body and soul.” Steve Reinemund, former CEO of Pepsi, woke at 5:00 AM every morning to run 5 miles on the treadmill…and then followed that up by praying, reading, getting the news, and having breakfast with his family!
BIZ Feature The early bird really does get the worm in today’s business market. At BizNOW, we’ve compiled 6 daily habits of highly successful people and how they spend their mornings:
1. Rise and Shine. Getting up a half hour or an hour earlier
than normal really CAN pay off. Waking up earlier means you have time to organize your day and plan ahead. Review your goals, review your to-do list, write in your journal to get a jumpstart on your day.
2. Eat the Frog! Mark Twain once said, “If you eat a
live frog first thing in the morning, you can go through the rest of the day knowing the worst is behind you.” The message: cross off the biggest, hardest, and most important task first, and it will brighten your outlook for the entire day!
3. Attitude Adjustment. The right attitude can make
all the difference. Whether you choose to visualize the day ahead or meditate and enjoy the serenity of a sunrise, setting a positive mindset can help you find success. Early risers are happier, healthier, and more productive, according to a recent study by the American Psychological Association. Morning people also tend to be more proactive – they anticipate problems and solve them.
4. Brush up on Breaking News. Catch the morning headlines, review a briefing from work, get the latest
updates in your industry, even look up last night’s sport scores. All these things help you stay informed and have a good understanding of what’s happening in your field and in the world. Successful people stay up-to-date on current events and their industry – not only will you be informed, but it can inspire you to broaden your perspective and lead to your next great idea.
5. Get Moving. A trip to the gym, an early morning bike
ride, even light stretching can get the blood pumping and the good vibes flowing. A sunrise workout can energize your morning and create an all-day boost in brain-power AND self-confidence.
6. Ask Yourself 3 Questions. Prioritize each project
for the day by asking, Is this something other people want me to do? Something I see someone else doing? Something I know I should be doing? For every block of time, think about how your activities fit those parameters. Bottom line: your time should be spent on things that are necessary, bring a high return, or are highly rewarding, says bestselling author John Maxwell (Leadership Gold).
Forming good morning habits can require discipline; but the effort is worth it. The most successful entrepreneurs a nd leaders know how to utilize all hours of the day. u

Failure
by Bruce Watley, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship and Marketing
Smart BIZ
is an entrepreneur’s best friend What comes to mind when you hear the word failure? Some people might think of bad decisionmaking, a company going out of business, or even personal bankruptcy; but is that really the right perspective? When you embrace those failures and learn from your mistakes, you become stronger and smarter in the long run. Failure really can be an entrepreneur’s best friend.
Just consider some of these failures: W alt Disney had numerous failures and
was fired because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas”; yet he had one of the most successful animation companies and entertainment parks in the world. Steven Spielberg was rejected three times from the University of Southern California before enrolling at another school. He then dropped out and began directing films; some of his work includes Jaws, E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I t took Sir James Dyson 5,126 failed prototypes and 15 years worth of savings before he finally developed the Dyson Vacuum, the most innovative and best selling vacuum cleaner in the United States.
So what do these individuals all have in common? They learned from their failures, showed perseverance, were able to find new ways toward success and embraced failure. Dale Carnegie once said “Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are the surest stepping stones to success.” So what do we learn from failure? A lot.
Failure teaches us about ourselves. When we fail
at something, we discover hidden characteristics in ourselves. You are resourceful enough to pull yourself out of an unpleasant situation. You can find initiative to do something in a different way. You will uncover a new direction and a new dream because you are persistent enough to break through the barriers in your way.
Failure gives us a new perspective and knowledge.
Troubleshooting a failure gives us valuable insight into where our efforts need to be redirected. At one point or another we have all learned how NOT to interact with a customer, how NOT to interview for a job or how NOT to treat the people around us because of failure. When we do make a mistake, we can ask ‘what went wrong?’ and ‘how can I deliver a different result next time?’ then look ahead to trying again.
Failure allows you to learn and create something new. Thomas Edison tried over 9,000 different ways to make
a light bulb before he succeeded. Each attempt was unique, but they all provided him with a new problem to solve. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, Edison’s response was “I didn’t fail 9,000 times – I learned 9,000 ways not to make a light bulb.” Failure spurs creativity and gives room for innovation. The next time you see someone fail, just remember they could be on the verge of a significant break through. Give them encouragement, support, and a listening ear. Who knows, you just might be rubbing shoulders with the next Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, or J.K. Rowling! u

5 TIPS On HOW TO BECOME A Morning Person by Tessa Audet
This article is for all you night owls out there. You know who are. The ones who find a sudden burst of energy at 10 o’clock at night or feel the need to consistently stay up ‘til two in the morning ‘cause –let’s face it– that Netflix isn’t going to watch itself. It’s a fact– most of us have to be up early for work. Being a major night owl can get in the way of that, leaving you tired and frankly, a bit grumpy. So how do you become one of those annoyingly peppy morning people with the bright smiles and jaunty strides? Well, Biz dragged ourselves out of bed at the crack of dawn to discover the ways of the elusive and mysterious “morning person,” and here’s what we found:
• Take some time to wind down: It’s important to get
your brain into sleep mode at night. One way to do this is to wind down before bedtime and reduce all the stimuli that might cause your brain to still think its day. For instance, shut off the TV; dim the lights a couple hours before snooze time; or put your phone away once your head hits the pillow. This will help your brain and body understand it’s time to rest and will reduce the staring-at-the-ceiling time.
• Eat breakfast: We all know that breakfast is the most
important meal of the day, but how many of us can actually say we always eat it? (No, two cups of black coffee doesn’t count.) Try to give yourself enough time in the morning to eat a substantial breakfast with protein in it-- like eggs, yogurt and granola, and so on. This will rev your metabolism and boost your energy for the day.
• Start slow: Maybe you usually climb out of your cave
around 8am but you really need to be getting up around 7am. Start setting your alarm back 15 minutes every couple days until you reach your goal. It will give you time to adjust to the new schedule and make it easier to actually wake up.
• Wake up happy: Think of yourself as a Disney princess or
prince that wakes refreshed to the merry sounds of little birds chirping and woodland creatures singing you a jolly tune. You would be practically forced into happiness and to start singing along as you got ready. Ok, maybe life is not a Disney movie and that alarm you’re using sounds more like a fog horn then an adorable chipmunk’s melody. Try changing your wake-up sound to something more soothing and pleasant. Pick anything that will put a smile on your face. u
Smart BIZ Sponsored by:
• Let some light in: It’s tempting to keep those curtains
closed all morning while you snooze, but just say no. It will be a lot easier to roll out of bed if there’s sunlight filtering in to wake your brain up. Try keeping your curtains cracked so some sun can peak through…or leave just the sheer curtains drawn… or nothing at all. (Go big or go back to sleep, right?)

What makes the Caramelicious different from any other caramel latte? Assistant Manager Hope Store says the secret is in the caramel sauce, which gives it a fuller f lavor.
Greg Leonard: “I’m not a real traditional coffee drinker; however, the Caramelicious is a different story. I don’t have one every day, but it’s not like I wouldn’t like to. My favorite is the semi-frozen blended.”
Charlotte Hofer: “Wow! This is indulgence, this is dessert.”

puccino p a r F t s e B ’ s Sioux Fall The Peanutbutter ‘Zapped’ Frap
from Josiah’s Coffeehouse The Peanutbutter Frap originated with a customer request, says Josiah’s owner Steve Hildebrand. When the staff at Josiah’s tasted the drink, it landed a spot on their menu and quickly became a customer favorite. Our drinks were ‘zapped’ with a base of cold press coffee and disappeared before we knew what was happening!
Bruce Watley: “Wow, wow, wow! Frappuccinos on the patio, this is what summer is about.”
Alison Peymann: “What seems like an odd f lavor combination really marries well – I know so many peanut butter lovers that would slurp the PB frap right up.”
uccino p p a C t s e B ’ Sioux Falls A traditional Italian Cappuccino from Coffea Roasterie
With 2 shots of espresso, locally produced milk, and a process that steams milk 30 degrees cooler than many coffee shops, Coffea’s Italian Cappuccino is a staff favorite – and one of ours, too! Coffea’s baristas also participate in latte art competitions, so each drink is also visually beautiful.
Sue Ford: “The f lavor in the creamy, frothy milk combined with the rich coffee espresso made this drink as sweet and pleasing as the picture perfect way the baristas made it. You deserve a treat like this in the morning, afternoon or evening!”
Charlotte Hofer: “It’s a superb balance of espresso; rich, sweet milk and delicate foam.” Alison Peymann : “Every sip is delicious.”
**Roast Master Andrew Fritz guided us through a tasting, or ‘cupping ’, of 3 coffees roasted at Coffea. Owner Jennifer Swanson taught us how to evaluate a coffee for its attributes: flavor, body, acidity, aroma and aftertaste.

While most people are fast asleep, the bakers at Great Harvest Bread Company in Sioux Falls are just beginning their day. “Baking bread is very scientific. It is all based on temperatures. If the yeast isn’t the right temp, then it won’t bake right.” The science behind the bread at Great Harvest Bread Company has more to do with the employees than it does their 5 basic ingredients.

“We’re not doing brain surgery here. We’re baking bread! We’re fun, loud, crazy, and we love to give back to the community.” The head baker comes in at midnight to begin the 8-hour baking process. The secret of the bread at Great Harvest is the 5 ingredients at the heart of every recipe. “We use local as much as possible.” After hours of checking temperatures and baking, the bread hits the tables at 6:30 AM. “It’s all hands on deck at 6:30.” It’s when staff gathers around the table to knead. Loaves are separated evenly by weight, and because each loaf is handmade, no two are alike. Great Harvest corporate offices help franchisees with support and recipes, but local stores still have the freedom to develop their own unique breads and sweets. “When your mother made things years ago and you loved it . . . we just up the batch size. We’re not reinventing the wheel; we’re just adding new flavors.”

People. Places. Things. It’s about the reaction, the moment, the angle. It’s about the idea, not the filters used to get there. It’s about seeing things differently. That’s what I do.
~Jayne Erickson
The characteristics which make Great Harvest so… well, Great, are paramount in their business operations and motto:
Be loose and have fun – When owner and manager Cari Synder was first brought to the corporate offices in California, she wasn’t sure what to expect. “At my first meeting, the first question that asked me was ‘What kind of music do you like?’ I was not prepared for that!” She brings the same lighthearted attitude to her store. Bake phenomenal bread – “We bake with whole grains – fresh, healthy, real bread!” Many of the 5 basic ingredients in the Great Harvest recipes are from local distributors. The honey, one of their most important ingredients, is from a farm outside Madison. Run fast to help customers – Everything is open. The baking area and the kneading table are easily visible. “We have everything open so the staff can talk to the customers.” And give generously to others – “If it isn’t sold, then we
donate it to people in need.”
While many of us are sleeping, the Great Harvest Bread Company has been at work for many hours, preparing sweets and bread for the community. “We always have something new. Come here, eat of piece of bread. It will all make sense!” u

Career Spotlight
Q&A
with Shannon Barnes
interview by Charlotte Hofer
Q: Shannon, you’ve done a lot of work for TV and magazines making people look great! In fact, you’ve done my make-up on several modeling jobs. What’s the #1 thing women just don’t know about applying makeup? That less is more. Also, the right colors to wear.
Hold a color up next to your face and rather than looking at the color, look at how it affects your skin tone and eye brightness. It will help you determine what colors work for you.
Q: B iggest makeup mistake women make?
Wearing the wrong color foundation. Sephora now has a great tool that reads your skin tone and can exactly match it to a foundation color.
Q: Any tips for looking awake after a long night of working? Fatigue can make the skin look dull, so a really good BB or CC cream and a great concealer with brightener, like YSL Touche Eclat, are a good way to fake a good night's sleep. Wear sheer bright color on the cheek and lip and keep eyes neutral.
Q: P rofessional women often lack the time required to maintain healthy skin. And the office environment – air conditioning, stale air – can leave skin looking dull. What do women need to know about skin care? Exfoliation is the best thing you can do for your skin. A good manual, chemical or enzymatic exfoliant is a great investment, along with a good eye cream and serum for your skin type. Sunscreen is a must to protect skin and prevent aging.
Q: Best skin care product for people on a budget?
Q
BB or CC creams, because they do multiple things: hydration, oil control, primer, sunscreen and evening of the skin tone. They are available at drug stores, specialty stores and department stores.
Most famous person you’ve ever worked with on a shoot? “President Obama for a campaign commercial. I even had my own Secret Service guy for the day! A close second was a music video for Black Sabbath in the 90's.”
24 | BizNOWmagazine.com | September 2013
Q: B est luxury makeup line? Best affordable makeup line? And is name brand makeup actually better than drugstore brands? The best drugstore makeup line I think
is probably L'Oreal Paris, but in the luxury category it’s almost impossible to name just one as they all use very good technology. Every brand has its strengths. Consult with a makeup artist about your options. Luxury brands really are often better than drugstore brands – that’s why they are more expensive. The research, technology and acquisition of ingredients make a difference in the performance of the product.
Shannon’s 5 Fave Makeup Products
“These are a few things I use every day, though it's hard to limit it to five!"
1. Lancome Genefique Q: What’s your “can’t-live-without” make up tool? A Clarisonic (deep cleansing tool) and an eyelash curler. You won't find me on ANY deserted island without them!
Q: You’ve done makeup for rock stars and the President! What was it like to work with President Obama? Amazing. He is genuinely charismatic, warm and funny. It was also fascinating to watch how his Secret Service team functioned and how calm he stayed even when things were chaotic around him. He wanted every detail to be right because he was speaking in Spanish and hadn't since 5th grade. Even though he was exhausted, he did every take until he got it absolutely right.
Q: What makeup did he need?! Just some concealer to even out the skin tone and powder for the camera.
activates a youth protein in the skin which makes it smooth, even toned and supple
2. P eter Thomas Roth Peeling Gel exfoliates without drying out the skin, leaving it fresh and smooth
3. Laura Mercier Oil-Free Supreme Foundation natural finish that looks like skin and wears well
4. YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lip Stain very long wearing lip stain that stays glossy looking and doesn't dry out lips, all in one step
5. M ake Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara big lashes, fast - doesn't f lake, smudge or smear

Q: Best career advice for an aspiring makeup artist? The best thing you can do when starting out is to assist a really experienced makeup artist -- ask questions and learn techniques. u
