100 Prints Celebrating 100 Years A Selection of Student Work from the Print Department Archive of The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University

As The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University celebrates its Centennial we are pleased to showcase the accomplishments of our Printmaking Department. The works exhibited here have been selected from the vast archive of student prints made at AIB over the past twenty-five years. This collection serves as a key educational tool, allowing faculty to show students first-hand examples of printmaking techniques and printing options with a wide range of approaches to both concepts and imagery. These prints are invaluable for Instructing and inspiring new students year after year, and the quality of these works sets the standards of excellence and professionalism expected by the faculty. Strong drawing and design skills with a high level of technical confidence and flexibility are consistent attributes of the Fine Arts Department at AIB. Regardless of the approach or medium, the imagery in this exhibit reflects our department’s emphasis on developing each student’s individual artistic vision. We wish to congratulate the artists whose work was selected for this exhibit and to thank the hundreds of others whose prints continue to be an equally vital part of the Print Department Archive. Michael David Professor and Chair of Fine Arts Liza Folman Professor of Fine Arts

Printmaking at AIB Printmaking is one of several departments housed within the Fine Arts Department. Classes are structured by medium (eg. intaglio, lithography, woodcut, etc.) and offered at multiple levels. The Advanced Printmaking class brings together upper level students from these various print courses to further explore, and often combine techniques, with an emphasis on conceptual development and creating a cohesive, personal body of work. A highlight of all printmaking classes is a visit to view selections from the print collections at the Boston Public Library or at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Faculty and students are extremely grateful for these intimate and inspiring experiences. In 1988 The Art Institute of Boston received accreditation to grant BFA degrees and new faculty were hired. Michael David and Liza Folman began teaching at AIB in the late 1980s, with Constance Jacobson joining the faculty in 1998. A new printmaking department was developed that focused primarily on intaglio (etching) techniques. In the following years additional faculty, Renee Covalucci and Carolyn Muskat, have contributed their expertise in relief printmaking and lithography respectively.

Monotype, collagraph, digital and photo-based printmaking are also part of our current curriculum, with plans to add silkscreen. Among other faculty who have recently taught or are presently teaching printmaking at AIB are Gretchen Ewert. Judith Brown, Catherine Kernan, James Stroud, Clara Lieu, Tim Peck, Dasha Petrov, James Mustin, Joel Janowitz, and Alex Gerasev. The printmaking facilities are presently located in two large, sunlit rooms on the fourth floor of 700 Beacon Street, and house five presses and a state-of-the-art ventilation system. A larger, more fully equipped printmaking studio will built at AIB’s future home on the Lesley University North Campus in Porter Square, Cambridge. The successful day-to-day operation of the print studio would not be possible without the assistance of our student print studio monitors. They are selected by the print faculty to help keep the print shop orderly and assist their fellow print students during non-class hours. Their presence sets the tone for a serious work ethic. continued on back inside cover

The AIB Printmaking Department has a history of engaging students in dialogue with contemporary printmakers. In 2003 AIB was one of several co-hosts for the annual Southern Graphics Council printmaking conference, held for the first time in Boston. This international event introduced AIB students to the global print community. AIB students continue to attend this event in other U.S. cities, as well as the annual Print and Artist’s Books Fairs in NYC. Since AIB students are required to complete an internship during their studies, printmaking students get the chance to have professional experiences at galleries, public institutions or in the studios of master printers. These opportunities have greatly increased since 2010, when a special alliance was created between Lesley University and the Boston Printmakers, an international artists’ organization. The relocation of their headquarters to our campus opened a direct link for our students to its vast network of artists, exhibitions and internship possibilities. Throughout the academic year printmakers of local, national and international renown are invited to AIB for presentations and critiques. These artists share personal techniques and experiences that inform and inspire students in intimate classroom settings or at the annual final department critique, Print Talk.The AIB Printmaking Department had a particularly rewarding relationship with artist Michael Mazur (1935-2009). He was the recipient of a Lesley University honorary degree in 2001 and filled many invaluable roles, including visiting artist, mentor, seminar professor, internship supervisor, and most importantly as a passionately admired artist. Our students, faculty and administration feel very privileged and thankful for this special relationship, and are exceedingly grateful to Gail Mazur for the donation of his etching press to AIB. Contemporary and past printmakers have been showcased in several outstanding print exhibits in the AIB main gallery. Individual shows have been dedicated to the prints of Käthe Kollwitz, Chuck Close, Sue Coe and Leonard Baskin. Additional exhibitions have included: Double Identities; Master Printmakers/Master Teachers (1997), organized by Michael David, which highlighted several of the Boston area’s leading artists/teachers;

Realized in Wood: Contemporary Prints from China (2003), curated by Renee Covalucci, that introduced Boston to four contemporary master Chinese woodblock artists; A Century of Photogravure (2011), presented by Bonnell Robinson and Andrew Mroczek; Ink Wipe Roll Print (2008), an exhibition of work by the AIB print faculty. Off campus, print exhibitions specifically dedicated to AIB students have taken place at Mt. Wachusett Community College (1988), the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1995) and Mourlot Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston (1993 and 1994). Additionally, our students participate in the biennial Arches Student Print Exhibition, a juried show of work from numerous regional print departments, hosted by the Boston Printmakers.

. . .

Each spring the Advanced Printmaking class creates an exchange portfolio based on a theme chosen by the class. This project, initiated by Liza Folman in 1992, culminates in each student’s building a portfolio box and trading prints with their classmates so every student and AIB get a complete edition. Two of these portfolios have entered the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and seventeen are in the permanent collection of the Boston Public Library in Copley Square. Advanced printmaking students have participated in exchange portfolios with students at other local institutions, including the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. They have also participated internationally with the China Art Academy, Hangzhou, the DeKooning Art Academy, Rotterdam, and the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, Paris. Along with the new art building and print studios planned for the Cambridge campus, new programs are presently being developed for an undergraduate major and a Master of Fine Arts degree, specifically in printmaking. Additional print media, faculty, visiting artists, exhibitions, internships and opportunities will continue to strengthen and expand our offerings for AIB students in printmaking over the next 100 years.
