FASHION SCHOOL:

5 Lessons From pr guru Bonnie Morrison

An early street style darling with an inimitable work ethic and a PR client list that includes the biggest global fashion brands, Bonnie Morrison embodies the Insider “It” Girl the one running the show, instead of sitting in the front row. Our Manager of Retail & Press Relations, Liz Clark, recently caught up with her longtime friend about her career, her st yle and a lit tle PR advice for brands and retailers AND her # walkofshamestreetst yleposts.

Here’s what we learned: 1. WHEN YOUR DREAM FALLS APART, YOU’LL HAVE YOUR TRANSFERABLE SKILLS AND RELATIONSHIPS.

I started as a “rover,” which is an in-house temp at Conde Nast. I had wanted to work at magazines since I was a kid — I read over a dozen of them cover to cover each month — it drove my parents crazy because I never wanted to throw any of them out. But that’s how I learned about fashion and culture, and those are the only things I ever really cared about or even considered. From there I worked at various jobs within the company until I finally made it to assistant editor at Mademoiselle. My first month in that position was September 2001, and it folded shortly thereafter. I went into working at a PR agency after that — I had carried that early knowledge of fashion with me and had worked on the other side long enough that I understood how the job worked: traf ficking samples, maintaining a collection, establishing relationships in the market. 2. BE EASY TO WORK WITH.

I at tribute any longevit y I have had to really trying my best to be useful to my clients. Public relations is a service industry in many ways — we work at the pleasure of both designers and editors. So being flexible, trying to help solve problems and maximize ef ficiency and always trying to keep my ego out of any interaction or decision has been at the core of how I try to conduct myself in business. So much of it is about being easy to work with, essentially.

3. DESIGNERS, FOCUS.

I think all of the best, most successful designers have a specific vision — both for their product and for their business. Your aesthetic is important, but so is how you grow. The people I admire the most make it a priorit y to work with the best people and give them the freedom and support to do what they are good at. Everything is collaboration in the end. 4. HAVING A SHOW DURING NYFW DOESN’T GUARANTEE ANYTHING.

I think so much emphasis is placed on the runway (especially in New York) and in truth not all designers have the volume or representation yet, or are prepared to spend the money. With all the competition for locations, time slots and audience, having a show at New York fashion week doesn’t guarantee anything, and entering that fray too soon can really disable a business that isn’t ready. Trade shows give designers terrific exposure and also help them to really understand the business side by get ting to really know the stores, the buyers and the market. That knowledge is so important. 5. RETAILERS, ARTICULATE YOUR EXPERTISE.

I think that anything that helps define your voice and makes you stand out is going to at tract the press to you. The curation and pointof-view is important these days because the internet and social media have made our culture so visual. People want experts, data, and unique points of view. If you can distill what sets you apart, the press starts to see you as an authorit y. Looking for more? Four more lessons at editshows.com/3393 @edit_ shows / #wearthefuture / #EDITFW15
