HERE ARE OUR TOP TAKEAWAYS FROM THE DISCUSSION. 1. HAVE YOUR OWN SELLING STYLE.
Recently, Glasgow Caledonian University New York presented ‘A Conversation Discussing Fashioning Neighborhoods, Retail, and Philanthropy’ hosted by Fern Mallis, a discussion with Jeffrey Kalinsky, boutique founder & Nordstrom’s Designer Fashion Director. Go to editshows.com/Jeffrey for five more takeaways from this inspiring discussion.
Jeffrey talked about growing up working in his father’s shoe store, Bob Ellis, in Charleston, S.C. Though he grew to love selling while working retail part-time in college, he dreaded working in his father’s store as a teen. “He wouldn’t let me walk a customer through,” Jeffrey explained. He described a script that he would use that would always lead to him passing the customer off to his father. Jeffrey, of course, grew up to be a great seller — and to love it! Develop your own selling style and don’t over-script your employees.
2. “WHEN YOU GO INTO YOUR STORE, STAY IN YOUR STORE.” Though Jeffrey admitted to selectively following the advice of his retailer father, this quote was a lesson that he called out. He emphasized the importance of focusing on what’s going on inside your business, on what you can control and improve, instead of looking at what’s wrong outside.
3. GIVE BACK. The Jeffrey Fashion Cares events in New York City and Atlanta are among the most anticipated and glamorous fashion fundraiser events in the country. SAVE THE DATE for Jeffrey Fashion Cares in New York City on Monday, April 4th. Visit jeffreyfashioncares.org for more info.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND IN FASHION? In the 80s, I worked for French createurs such as France Andrevie and Jean Paul Gaultier, where I was a sales assistant. I learned the profession and how to watch a collection from a different eye. Then, I joined my mother to work at the Atmosphere tradeshow and I created the FAME area within Who’s Next in 2002. A year ago, I created my own company, So...
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE SO… AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THIS CONCEPT? By launching So…, I wanted to create my own approach to international development and strategies for fashion and art de vivre (lifestyle) designers/ brands. I also wanted to create a dedicated space inside an already existing event, adapting the selection to the market and country to make it different and special every time. It was important for me to be part of a more intimate event, such as EDIT where meeting is easy and comes first.
3 QUESTIONS FOR SOPHIE GUYOT Fashion industry veteran, Sophie Guyot, will be bringing a brand new “shop in show” concept to EDIT in February. Go to editshows.com/soparis to learn more about SO… PARIS AT EDIT.
WHAT DO YOU THINK FRENCH LABELS UNIQUELY OFFER THAT’S SO APPEALING? France has always been a showcase for fashion with its know-how and creativity. I think that French brands have a special concern for the quality when it comes to materials and shapes.
“IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO BE PART OF A MORE INTIMATE EVENT, SUCH AS EDIT, WHERE MEETING IS EASY AND COMES FIRST.”
