MRKET

the exclusive show for the menswear industry: tailored to contemporary

Now IS THE TIME FOR MRKET! Classic, sartorial dressing is trending in menswear and MRket is proud to showcase many of the best brands representing this look. From clothing and jackets to sportswear and accessories, the merchandise mix at MRket is well-edited and trend-right. More than what’s fashionable, MRket fosters a sense of community: a place to do business, exchange ideas and network. Nothing replaces face to face interaction and MRket’s goal is to create a venue that is conducive to this way of doing business. As we apply the finishing touches on the July exhibition, below is a brief “glimpse” of what you can expect at MRket NY…

Vanguards Gallery: Curated and selected by Michael Macko, the Gallery features 12

exciting, new and emerging brands. Vanguards Gallery is an area of MRket NOT to be missed. Located at the entrance to Hall 3B.

Macko’s MRket Picks: Produced

and conceived by Michael Macko and Brooklyn Dry Goods, MMP’s will feature theme-based, trend-driven vignettes that are thought-provoking, exciting and newsworthy.

MRket Bloggers: An invited group of notable fashion bloggers will be combing the aisles

of MRket creating content live from the show floor. From brand interviews, to candid shots of who’s looking good, to documenting the must-have items for S/S 2013, the bloggers will capture the best of MRket for their thousands of followers.

MRKET APP: Know what’s happening on the MRket show floor by downloading the MRket

app to access floorplans, exhibitor listing and exclusive, special show notifications. Even better, show the bartender in the MRket Lounge that you downloaded the app and have a free drink on us. Beer, wine, soda and water available!

MRket DJ Lexey: She is back and spinning our favorite music for all 3 show days, located adjacent to Vanguards Gallery.

MRket Shoe Shine: Compliments of the exclusive Saphir leather care brand from Paris, we invite all attendees to stop by booth 505 for the best shoe shine you will ever have! We look forward to seeing you in July. Lizette Chin, Show Director

DESIGNERSPOTLIGHT

RON RIDER Director, USA

www.alfredsargent.co.uk

BOOTH 505

How would you define your collection? Describe the Alfred Sargent man. Alfred Sargent produces Goodyear welted footwear using the finest calfskins and suedes, built on updated lasts with sophisticated outsole treatments, and hand-burnished finishes. All are made 100% under our own roof in the UK. I’d say the clients we meet more and more are those seeking to combine the quality of the past with the aesthetics of the present. Today’s consumer demands quality for the investment but doesn’t necessarily want to wear his Grandfather’s shoes. It’s critical to offer modern architectural lasts, elegant finishing, classic patterns with a twist and to put a lot of time and effort into the sole finishing, etc. Our guy pays attention to the details.

Which “must-have” item from your Spring/Summer 2013 collection will instantly update a man’s wardrobe? Anything in suede. I think we are finally getting to the point where suede is understood as a year-round material and our Callaghan model is a fantastic suede loafer. We are even going to offer this as a combination with grained calfskin as a USA exclusive for S/S ‘13.

From where do you draw inspiration? Inspiration is drawn from old catalogues between the years of 1935 and 1965. And my bank statements...

What do you consider to be the world’s best fashion city for men and why? It’s hard to argue for any other place than New York. The sheer volume of stores, the availability of brands at every price point, and the magnitude of style options to satisfy any taste always amazes me. Whatever list of conditions you would come up with to determine “best,” New York would tick them all.

What do you think the next major shift in the menswear industry will be? We are on the verge of seeing the rebirth of the small, independent retailer - or, at least, I sure hope so. I think people want to get to know who they are shopping with, whose family they are supporting, and the story behind what they are buying – it all fits to rebuild the small, family-owned retailer. Now, if the banks would just allow it to happen.

What is your favorite New York City hangout? Wherever my wife wants to hang out. When I’m on my own and I have to choose one spot to sit, eat and drink, it’s Kafana in the East Village.

If you were not a designer or principal of this brand, what would you be doing? I would be shining shoes…which I’ll probably be doing at the MRket show anyway. 8

DESIGNERSPOTLIGHT

CATHERINE M. ZADEH President www.catherinemzadeh.com

BOOTH 449

How would you define your collection? Describe the Catherine M. Zadeh man. Catherine M. Zadeh is a collection of contemporary jewelry and accessories for men. Inspired by all my past lives, in Iran and Paris, my pieces are expressions reincarnated as sculptural shapes. I strive to create accessories that add refinement and elegance to a man’s aesthetic by giving an emotional underpinning and an intellectual presence to my designs. A Catherine M. Zadeh man is not about heavy ornamentation, skulls, or cutesy designs like butterflies, dogs, or a golf ball. The Catherine Zadeh man has got to think his way through the pure appeal of the form to the abstraction of beauty. He is refined, elegant, and stylish and sets himself apart by his unique yet discreet accoutrement.

Which “must-have” item from your Spring/Summer 2013 collection will instantly update a man’s wardrobe? Whether in jeans and a sport coat, a suit or a tuxedo, the well-dressed man is defined by the details. A signature brushed and satin finish cuff link peeking out from underneath a jacket sleeve or a sleek belt buckle is the ultimate accessory that defines the gentlemen of today. However, I see men expressing themselves in a more confident way through their wrist wear. A chic Zadeh Macramé bracelet with a sterling silver design will instantly update a man’s wardrobe and convey who he is as a person; he doesn’t want to make a bold statement with his jewelry but rather maintain a preppy casual style that is as refined and unique as he is.

From where do you draw inspiration? I draw my inspiration from contemporary art, furniture and architecture, but also from my travels. People from different cultures inspire me - their way of life, and the way they dress and accessorize. I especially love how Italian men dress so effortlessly. How they carry themselves, the way they mix and match, and the confidence they emanate is very inspiring.

What do you think the next major shift in the menswear industry will be? Accessories are no longer just for rock stars and surfer dudes; men of all stripes are finally experiencing a Spring awakening. There is a significant movement of guys, even the conservative ones, being interested in expressing their individuality through a bracelet. From a preppy pop of color or a discretely tone-on-tone number tucked under a line suit, bracelets are the coolest accessory.

What is your favorite New York City hangout? My favorite New York City hangout is Central Park. I love to stroll and take in the majestic beauty of the park. My work reflects how I feel emotionally so I make sure to surround myself with nature and a serene environment to reflect and gain perspective.

If you were not a designer or principal of this brand, what would you be doing? If I was not a designer or principal of this brand, I would love to travel and collaborate with different designers/architects to implement my aesthetic to a chain of ecofriendly hotels in all the cities that inspire me. I would also love to learn more about the world of contemporary art and possibly collaborate with emerging artists to create art that could positively impact the world. There are actually so many things I would like to do - too many to name. 9

DESIGNERSPOTLIGHT

LEE ALLISON President

BOOTH 640

How would you define your collection? Describe the Lee Allison man.

The Lee Allison Man can be anyone from a 17-year-old preppy guy with fine taste for his age to an 85-yearold dapper gentleman. What they all have in common is an appreciation for fine fabrics, clever designs, craftsmanship, and irreverent humor. If I had to pick one archetype though, it’s the 40-year-old finance guy or lawyer. Overall, our collection is updated traditional with a bold yet tasteful sense of color.

Which “must-have” item from your Spring/Summer 2013 collection will instantly update a man’s wardrobe?

We have some killer Summer plaid ties. The designs are classic (variations on Glen plaids) but the colors are soft and perfect for warm weather and cocktails. My favorite is one we call “Double Over” in pink and gray with a double windowpane overlay in ivory. The same design is also great in a narrow, pointed bow tie.

From where do you draw inspiration?

It’s cliché but I draw inpiration from everything I see around me. I once heard someone talk about an “in the clouds” effect (and this has nothing to do with storing data remotely). This person was referring to the time-honored tradition of lying around on a lazy day, looking up at the clouds and seeing animals in them. Of course, those rabbits are not really there; you just see things that look like rabbits. I find myself constantly looking at things (buildings, wallpaper, carpets etc.) and seeing things that aren’t actually there. Typography is another source of inspiration. I love fonts.

What do you consider to be the world’s best fashion city for men and why?

I think most designers I know would say Milan, or some other Italian city and a hipster designer would likely pick an unusual place that few Americans have visited like Stavanger, Norway or Riga, Latvia. However, I’m going to be boring and practical and say Chicago. Do I really think it’s “the world’s best fashion city?” No, not really, but it is where I live, and where I get the vast majority of my ideas and inspiration. So for me, and probably only me, it is the best fashion city in the world.

What do you think the next major shift in the menswear industry will be? I think we’re seeing it right now. Rules for men are breaking down and men are increasingly being allowed to show a truly personal sense of style. Jeans can be worn with just about anything now, and with this shift, men are more interested in buying separates. In a sense, menswear is becoming more like womenswear, which is both good and bad. The good news is that young men, more confident and adventurous, are mixing things both high and low. Therefore, clothing is getting easier to wear and more comfortable. The bad news, as we witnessed with “Casual Friday,” is that many men are not always great dressers so those “rules” are useful for many men.

What is your favorite New York City hangout?

Living in Chicago, I don’t have a favorite per se. However, The Beagle on the Lower East Side has a cool atmosphere, great cocktails, and interesting food. Apoteke in Chinatown is a hip and truly hidden speakeasy. For a classic bar, the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel is pretty fantastic. And lastly, on a cold winter’s night, it’s hard to beat the drama of The Campbell Apartment, right in Grand Central. But who said a favorite hangout had to include cocktails? So let me conclude by recommending a walk along either the High Line or the Brooklyn Promenade - both are wonderful ways to spend a lazy morning or late afternoon…before cocktails. 10

DESIGNERSPOTLIGHT

BARBARA NAST SALETAN President & Co Founder www.natnast.com

BOOTH 336

How would you define your collection? Describe the Nat Nast Creation man. A Nat Nast Creation’s man is a rebel without a cause and doesn’t follow rules while creating his own individual look.

Which “must-have” item from your Spring/Summer 2013 collection will instantly update a man’s wardrobe? This unique collection of individual pieces represents an iconic piece of American history. Any of the items will instantly update a man’s wardrobe.

From where do you draw inspiration? Stop the clock at 1946…Think about what was happening in the world at that time and that is where the inspiration comes from.

What do you consider to be the world’s best fashion city for men and why? In Brooklyn, men express their individual style and in Milan men combine tailored and casual clothes; each creating an impeccable style statement.

What do you think the next major shift in the menswear industry will be? I believe the next major shift in menswear will be detailed, vintage, American styling.

What is your favorite New York City hangout? My favorite New York hangout is Roman’s in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

If you were not a designer or principal of this brand, what would you be doing? I cannot imagine doing anything else, it’s our heritage!

DESIGNERSPOTLIGHT

MICHAEL TOPLISS General Manager www.saxxunderwear.com

BOOTH 851

How would you define your collection? Describe the Saxx Underwear man. Our collection is designed for the man who cares about how he looks and feels from a comfort/support perspective.

Which “must-have” item from your Spring/Summer 2013 collection will instantly update a man’s wardrobe? The new “Kinetic” from our spring collection is the Saxx must-have piece. Made with 4-way stretch microfiber mesh, it promotes airflow and moisture transfer providing a more comfortable underwear for those hot, humid days or any athletic activity.

From where do you draw inspiration? Our inspiration comes from asking the question, “What helps make a guy feel good about himself and will help make him confident and comfortable?”

What do you consider to be the world’s best fashion city for men and why? The world’s best fashion city is San Francisco. From beach casual to business, fashion and style cut across all men.

What do you think the next major shift in the menswear industry will be? We don’t know if it will be a shift but certainly garments that are comfortable and relaxed play a major role and a growing importance in a man’s wardrobe.

What is your favorite New York City hangout? My favorite New York City hangout is Havana Central. There is interesting food and great live music!

If you were not a designer or principal of this brand, what would you be doing? If I didn’t work at Saxx, I’d be running a winter business and taking summers off to go boating on the West Coast.

DESIGNERSPOTLIGHT

EMMIE HOWARD Chief Executive Belle www.southernproper.com

BOOTH 914

How would you define your collection? Describe the Southern Proper man. Style, tradition and authenticity are the Southern pillars that inspired the creation of Southern Proper, “Haberdashery for the Southern Gentleman.” By combining an appreciation for heritage and fashion, Southern Proper infuses adoration for the Southern lifestyle into a men’s accessory and clothing line that is much deeper than a Southern accent. Although neckwear is the best way for a man to add a splash of color to his suitings, the Southern Proper line has expanded beyond the necktie to include boxer shorts, belts, hats, polos, swimwear, blazers, t-shirts and pocket squares. You can find these fancies in over 250 men’s specialty retail shops around the United States.

Which “must-have” item from your Spring/Summer 2013 collection will instantly update a man’s wardrobe? Our classic throwback “Country Club” collection for Spring 2013 is the perfect mix of the cool Caddyshack style from the 1980s blended with a modern preppy look. The shorts are a bit shorter and the shirts a bit smarter. Be sure to check out the bright colors that reflect the fun Summer club cocktails along with the sophisticated detailing that certainly portrays a society look.

From where do you draw inspiration? We draw our inspiration from many years of traditional Southern style along with the intertwining of politeness, hospitality, and bona fide Southern roots. The South might be seen as a very conservative and old-fashioned place, but no where else on earth will you find a man who is dressed to the nines, yet isn’t afraid of hard work and grit!

What do you consider to be the world’s best fashion city for men and why? Oxford, Mississippi and Atlanta, Georgia have to be our favorite cities for menswear. In one, we find gentleman wearing the finest brands with a pair of worn out cowboy boots that only look better with wear, and in the other, we find a refreshed sense of old-fashioned style with contemporary courtesy.

What do you think the next major shift in the menswear industry will be? Bright is right! On a recent trend shopping trip to Milan, we saw that color was everywhere. It’s typically not a new thing for Southern Proper, but in the market we feel like the brighter the better! Look for great colors in accessories for the seasons ahead...

What is your favorite New York City hangout? Our “Southern & Proper” New York hangout has to be The Lion. It has a delightfully casual atmosphere, great food, but at any moment you feel as if Ralph Lauren might pop in the door!

If you were not a designer or principal of this brand, what would you be doing? I would certainly be doing something colorful and creative. Maybe developing another brand or just living a wonderful, Southern life!
