The project brief was to design a rowing boathouse for South Dakota State University. This boathouse would be located at Lake Poinsett, 25 miles from Brookings, SD. Water, motion, and storage were the three areas of focus for the concept design. This project pays the most attention to storage as its mediating device.

This building shop introduces basic structural and geometric concepts and related tensile and lightweight material choices through texts, design, and hands-on construction of full-size mock ups and test structures. The first half of the semester was a model intensive project where we learned by making many models to understand structural behaviors. The second half of the semester included full scale mock-ups. This is a full scale mock-up of one of two projects that were designed and fabricated between two people in two weeks.

F E D E R I C O GARCIA.LAMMERS

I began my graduate studies in the summer of 2014, as a participant in Cities on the Water, a study abroad program based in Montevideo, Uruguay. This study abroad program was a chance to broaden my understating of coastal urbanism and local material practices used to construct cities on the water. The three areas of focus for the study abroad trip were to understand the Waters Edge, Public Spaces, and Material Practices. My interest in the local material practices led to helping my professor Federico Garcia Lammers with his research of the reinforced brickwork of Eladio Dieste.
