Visit the High Line on the Web

The High Life on The High Line They come, they sit, they walk, they stare and gaze; they take pictures, they laugh, they enjoy the sun and the breeze from the river; they enjoy this oasis of greenery and flowers and people. There are no cars, no bikes, no “bladers” or “boarders,” and no pets. In fact they are above it all: This is the High Line! This New York City Park is absolutely incredible. The first phase of the park which runs

from Gansevoort and Washington Streets to 20th Street opened in June. When the second phase is completed next year, the High Line will extend to 30th Street The High Line which is a former freight train service El (elevated train line) is a testament to the fact that adaptive reuse is viable and that it is not necessary to demolish everything old to make way for improvements. A Few Things About Full Screen View

Full Screen View ( FSV) has two covers: call them front and back, fore and aft, or cover one and cover two if you like, but we give equal weight to the images that “wrap” our content. Embedded in the text of the articles and throughout the magazine there are red hyperlinks that allow our readers access to more information on products and services highlighted in the current issue. FSV has a sister site: www.fullscreenview-n-motion.com . The “–n-motion” site is where we make our video content available for viewing. The first video produced for the site is “Walking the High Line.” You can read about the High Line in FSV and then click on the hyperlink to experience it! The “Blog” in which this publication is embedded, will be updated periodically between issues. Our next issue is due for release November 1, 2009. The theme of the next issue is “The Arts,” and our fashion pieces and features will be focused accordingly. ED

On-Line Retail: A Little Gilt Goes a Long Way What do you get when you pair sales at up to 70% off designer wear by invitation only for men, women and children, with on-line only shopping? You get the Gilt Groupe. Founded in 2007 by Alexandra Wilkis Wilson and Alexis Maybank, Gilt is an on-line destination for value. Among the labels included in recent Gilt sales are; Vera Wang Lavender, Peter Som, Vince, James Perse, Valentino Pret-aPorter, John Varvatos, Abaete, A.Testoni, Stella McCartney, Mischen, Benjamin Bixby and Marc Jacobs. You can also find grooming and beauty products available through Gilt, as well as items for home in the “Dwellstudio” on the Gilt site. So how does it work? You sign-up and sale announcements are e-mailed to you in advance. You have the option of marking the sale on your calendar. The sales usually begin at noon and last for 36 hours. You can see what other shoppers are putting in their carts as well as when items are sold out. There is also a friend referral program: Invite friends to join Gilt, and when their first purchase ships, you get a $25 credit placed in your Gilt account. Gilt recently launched Gilt Fuse exclusively for women which features clothing at a lower price-point from current hot labels and emerging designers. Gabby Meriles of Gilt says that “Fuse” is often described as Gilt’s “younger sister.” If you are going to shop Gilt, shop early for the best selection of styles and sizes.

The Standard NY : 337 Rooms with a View From the High Line at 13th Street, one has no clue that the structure they are walking under is a hotel. At the Street level, the scene outside The Standard New York is typical of many a New York City hotel: Bellmen, guests coming and going, luggage carts, cabs, and a restaurant. You walk in to the lobby and the staff is as friendly and attentive as you could want. But once you leave the lobby for the guest floors, and enter the rooms you discover two things: The rooms are impeccably appointed and the views at The Standard are simply extraordinary. The Standard which has been open for several months is technically still in what is called their “soft opening.” For those who are not familiar with hospitality speak, “soft opening” simply means that there is still some construction work going on. But as a guest, you don’t get the sense that the hotel is anything less than 100%. Health and Fitness 411 No matter what hemisphere of the world You live in, September signals a change of season: Summer or winter are about to give way to fall or spring. Seasonal change is a good time to re-evaluate, reinvigorate and yes, even start your fitness routine. Yes, it is time to head to or get back to the gym! Time to figure out group fitness schedules and when your favorite instructor is spinning, body sculpting, or teaching the dreaded abdominal class. It’s time for dumbbells, barbells, cables, and bands and a favorite piece of cardiovascular equipment. Going back to the gym after three months of seasonal indulgence or malaise, can be a very daunting task but with some planning and forethought, it does not have to be. My recommendation is the same for both women and men: Take it slow, real slow You didn’t gain those extra pounds overnight and you can’t expect them to vanish with one or two exercise sessions. Plan on taking one class or undertaking one exercise session for the day; adding a second session or class is generally not going to get you faster results. In fact, overdoing it, especially when you are resuming or just starting a fitness regiment is the quickest way to injure yourself or to tire from your commitment to fitness. Just be patient! Before you begin any physical fitness and exercise program, make sure you consult the requisite healthcare professional. I can’t begin to underscore how important it is for you to do this.

Follow these steps, create a plan, stick to it throughout the year, and maybe, just maybe you can skip trying to do this again with the next seasonal change. SEE YOU IN THE GYM!

Make time to fit exercise in daily Make going to the gym an event which allows you to put home and work aside. Remember “more” and “heavier” is not always better as it relates to exercise: Make your sessions about quality and less about quantity. Weights in conjunction with cardio will burn fat more efficiently than cardio alone. if you need a structured program, try a personal trainer even if just for a short period to get you in gear. Chart your progress. Keep a log of how much you lifted or of your cardio distances/stats. Charting your progress especially early in your program, may be more important than seeing results on the waist and hips. Your cell phone has no place on the exercise floor. Your phone is a distraction. Like driving, cell usage while exercising can be hazardous to your health. Monitor what you are eating and drinking. Think about what foods contributed to your weight gain and make adjustments. Remember when you exercise, you need to make sure you are properly hydrated. Enjoy your journey! It’s hard work, but worth the effort.

Inspect-a-Gadget Small Package, Big Results! If they were re-making the Mae West – W.C. Fields classic “My Little Chickadee” today, Mae would undoubtedly be asking: “Is that a pen in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me big boy?” The “pen” she would be referring to is the Olympus E-P1 camera. Built on the micro 4/3 platform, Olympus promises dslr quality images in a smaller package. The E-P1 is feature rich including: In-body image stabilization; an interchangeable lens system; HD video capture; art filters for creative capture; a digital leveler; and the ability to shoot raw or jpeg among others. The MRP for the camera body and 14-42mm zoom lens kit is $799.99; and $899.99 for the 17mm “pancake” lens and viewfinder kit. Tech Tip: The Frame Up

Now that you’ve taken wonderful images, you need to display them. There are still the traditional prints and frames, but another option which becoming increasingly popular are digital display frames. These are essentially LCDs with memory, that you can download images to via a computer, flash drive and/or digital media. Some run on batteries, while others require AC. Some digital frames are just basic picture displays, while others have more robust features including speakers for audio payback, slide show capability, Wi-Fi connectivity, remote controls and changeable face plates and mattes. They are available in various sizes at most stores that sell consumer electronics.
