Changing & Saving Lives Through Timeless Giving
Message From the Chairman I have just completed one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, serving as Chairman of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Overall, I have dedicated more than 10 years serving on this distinguished Board and during my tenure, I witnessed first-hand how philanthropy shapes and changes lives. It is amazing! I also had the privilege to serve on Scottsdale Healthcare’s Board of Directors for the past 15 years. As an organization, Scottsdale Healthcare has experienced tremendous growth thanks to the generosity of our patients, friends and neighbors. Through your gifts, and the talents of dedicated physicians and nurses, as well as our entire staff, Scottsdale Healthcare is now a leader in state-of-the-art medical technology and world-class patient care. I have left my post knowing that it is in good hands; Keith Withycombe has succeeded me as Chairman of the Foundation Board of Trustees. Keith has served on the Foundation Board for the past seven years and is a dedicated leader. In addition, he will serve as an ex-officio member of the Scottsdale Healthcare Board of Directors. Keith and his wife Patty have lived in Arizona for the past 37 years. Keith is a graduate of the US Air Force Academy and served as an officer in the United States Air Force for six years. A former Sun Devil, Keith received his master’s degree in Engineering from Arizona State University. Currently, Keith is President of Western Heritage Investment Corporation, which specializes in the development of upscale homes and residential communities. Keith’s wife, Patty, has also been instrumental in supporting the Foundation through her leadership as co-chairman of The Honor Ball in 2005. Keith is a highly respected community leader and I know with his leadership and your generous support, we can look forward to even greater advancements in the future! I am also thankful that my wife, Tina, joined me on this wonderful journey of community service. She served on the Community Cancer Advisory Council which helped in the development and launch of the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea. She is especially proud of “Tina’s Treasures,” a long-time dream of hers. The time that Tina and I have given through Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation has truly been a labor of love.

Celebrating 25Years of Service This year marks the 25th anniversary of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. For the last quarter century, individuals, civic leaders and businesses have partnered with the Foundation to help Scottsdale Healthcare change and save lives.
1982 – The prelude to Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation began long before 1982 when the Scottsdale Memorial Hospital Development Office launched a capital campaign for construction of Scottsdale Memorial Hospital – North. Community leaders, service-minded individuals and businesses embraced the opportunity to become involved in the growing community. Through their efforts, almost $6 million was raised, which was the largest and most successful capital campaign in the Valley, and also laid the groundwork for the formation of Scottsdale Memorial Health Foundation. Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-North, now Scottsdale Healthcare Shea, opened on January 3. First Lady Nancy Reagan, joined Scottsdale Memorial President and CEO Arthur D. Nelson, M.D., for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Scottsdale Memorial Health Foundation was launched and its board of trustees was formed. Philanthropist and hospital board member Herbert K. Cummings was selected as the first Chairman.
1985 – The Foundation launched a fundraising drive for the expansion of the Emergency Department at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-Osborn. The small department was enlarged and the Trauma Center grew both in size and stature. The drive was another success and $2.3 million was raised. The first annual Scottsdale Memorial Golf Classic made its debut in 1985. Since its inception, the Golf Classic has raised more than $2.8 million.
1988 – The “Close to Your Heart” campaign was launched to create a Center for Cardiovascular Medicine at the Osborn hospital. More than $2.3 million was raised to provide the first cardiac catheter labs, and dedicated cardiac surgical services.
1994 – To celebrate a decade of service, the Foundation launched its “Community Covenant” campaign. Gifts and pledges would take the endowment to the $10 million threshold. The Foundation hosted the first Playing for T.I.M.E. (Technology, Imaging, Mammography and Education) women’s golf tournament to benefit Scottsdale Memorial’s BreastHealth Center.
1995 – Philanthropy played a key role in the major expansion of the Piper Outpatient Surgery Center at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-North through a $2 million gift from Virginia G. Piper. When completed in 1996, the center included four additional operating suites and nine patient rooms.

“We are profoundly grateful to the individuals, businesses and companies who along the way, have made a difference through their support. Thank you for your enormous efforts to make such a big difference in the lives of so many people.” n
Mike Greenbaum was introduced to Scottsdale Healthcare through a medical emergency. More than 25 years later, Mike vividly recalls the day his son fell and broke his thighbone. He remembers the feeling of relief and comfort that he felt after his son received outstanding care at then Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. It was the relief that quality medical care was close by that led Mike and his wife, Heather, to become long-standing friends and staunch supporters of Scottsdale Healthcare. “We had just moved here, we had been in the community for just two weeks when the accident occurred. That really inspired us to get involved.” Mike jumped in and found himself campaigning for the new hospital which was planned for “north Scottsdale” or as he describes it “the middle of nowhere. No people, no houses, not even animals nearby!”
With his bright smile and expanding community ties, Mike became entrenched in the growing medical center and the birth of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. “I think one of the most significant developments during that time was the launch of the Foundation,” he continues. “I was at the second Board of Trustees meeting and I’ve been involved ever since. I had the opportunity to lead some of the key fundraising initiatives and was fortunate to also develop great friendships along the way.” Mike continued his good work with the hospital and the Foundation; he served as Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees from 1994-1999. He expanded his leadership role and served on the Scottsdale Healthcare Board of Directors from 1996-2005, serving as its Chairman in 1999 and 2000. In addition, he was the first Chairman of the Foundation’s Investment Committee. Along the way, he encouraged and promoted the Foundation and Scottsdale Healthcare to his family and friends.
During the past two-plus decades, the couple has opened their hearts and their homes to share their spirit of giving. The result of Mike and Heather’s exceptional generosity is the addition of many services and medical technology, which have benefited patients, their families and the community. That’s why it was so fitting that the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation Board of Trustees appointed Mike with its highest honor as a Trustee for Life. This is only the second time in the history of the Foundation that this honor has been bestowed upon an individual. Mike proudly joins the late Virginia G. Piper in this recognition. “I am very humbled and was very surprised,” Mike admits. Mike adds, “I believe that everyone should have the best healthcare close at hand. That’s why we have to join in and help; we can’t leave it to others. In your time of need, Scottsdale Healthcare is there. That’s why I was here 25 plus years ago and why I continue to this day.” n
One supporter who joined in the ranks early on and has made her mark as well, is Mike’s wife, Heather. “She cofounded the Playing for T.I.M.E. golf and bridge tournaments,” he proudly says. “Scottsdale Healthcare has been an important part of both of our lives.”

A Heart Warming Story
Cory Schoonover’s Amazing Recovery Cory Schoonover loves to play football. The 20-year-old Gilbert resident is a wide receiver for the Tempe Predators. When he’s not on the field, Cory works at his family’s business, FNF Construction.
While Dr. Riley prepared for the one-of-a-kind-surgery, Cory’s friends and family kept a close vigil at the hospital. “It was nerve wracking,” says his mom, Julie. “We were in shock; one minute you have this healthy, strong young man and the next, he’s fighting for his life.”
Cory’s family serves as his cheering squad – now and during his amazing recovery from a near-fatal accident two years ago.
“I went into surgery with the intent of replacing his valve; then I discovered three additional conditions,” says Dr. Riley. Cory had suffered massive trauma - his heart had been crushed by the accident and had ruptured causing the tricuspid valve to tear away creating a hole in his heart. In addition, an artery had literally ripped off the aorta.
In the summer of 2007, Cory was hard at work when a freak accident left him crushed between two conveyor belts. He was transported via rescue helicopter to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center. At first, physicians determined that he had suffered a cardiac contusion – a bruise to the heart. However, after a day in the hospital for observation and testing, his condition rapidly deteriorated. He experienced increased breathing problems and his kidneys and liver started to shut down. Cory’s physician, cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Robert Riley explains, “On the outside, everything looked ‘normal.’ There was a small bruise to the chest. This was a perplexing case – we could not determine why his condition was worsening. We knew that his tricuspid valve had sustained some injury, other than that there was no explanation for his condition. It was a dire situation – we knew that we had to perform surgery in order to save his life. Nothing prepared us for what we found once we were in the Operating Room (OR).
HeartbeatPagePage10 I10www.shc.org/foundation I www.shc.org/foundation
“I was amazed at how much of the heart was destroyed,” comments Dr. Riley. “Each time I found one condition and repaired it, something else popped up, we went in for one operation and ended up doing four!”
Cory on the field.
Before I went into the OR, I did some quick research and found that there were only 13 reported cases similar to Cory’s with this extent of trauma to the valve; little did I know then, that Cory was about to make medical history!”
Fast-forward to today and Cory has few memories of the accident and the surgery. “The doctor told me that my heart exploded, it looked like someone had stomped on it! I realize how lucky I am.” After leaving the hospital, Cory received cardiac rehabilitation for two months and came to terms with the after effects of the accident. Thanks to his heart wrenching experience, Cory and his family have a new outlook on life. “We don’t take anything for granted,” says Kevin, Cory’s dad. “Each day is a blessing and we are thankful.”
Dr. Robert Riley, Cory and Sarah O’Brien celebrate at the Galleria of Fine Hearts.
“Everything has changed for me,” Cory says, “My family and I are closer now, I play football which is something I wasn’t able to do before. I realize that through this experience, I really want to help other people. I’ve never been through anything like this, I took things for granted. Not any more!” Cory and Dr. Riley were recognized at Scottsdale Healthcare’s Galleria of Fine Hearts an annual program designed to highlight the amazing stories of heart
patients and recognize the work of their physicians and the nursing staff. Awards were presented in several different categories. Cory has the distinction of being the most decorated of all the heart patients, receiving awards in four categories - “Youngest Patient,” “Most Surgeries in One Case,” “Least Likely to Survive,” and “Patient Story Which Reminds Us Why We Come to Work Every Day.”
Wise beyond his years, Cory looks ahead to a bright future,“I tell everyone, never give up, if I can make it through this, you can too; there is always hope.” n To learn more about Scottsdale Healthcare’s cardiovascular services, visit www.shc.org.

One key recruit was his daughter, Mary Ann Winter. “Scottsdale Healthcare is something that was an important part of my life, and now it is part of Mary Ann’s as well,” adds Dave.
Betsy Scrivner and her daughter Barbara, have a special love for family and that affection extends to two new additions to their family. The motherdaughter team are the proud sponsors of Scottsdale Healthcare University’s advanced patient simulators, otherwise known as SimMan and SimBaby. The simulator mannequins are vital teaching tools for nursing students at the University. The simulators give the students the chance to practice their bedside clinical skills with the realistic mannequins standing in as patients. Nursing students from Scottsdale Community College, Arizona State University and Paradise Valley Community College use SimMan and SimBaby in a variety of scenarios to practice their skills in a safe, non-threatening environment.
The Scrivners are delighted that they are able to bring these special resources to the students. “This is just terrific,” Betsy said as she observed the students communicating with SimMan. “I’ve always had a fondness for Scottsdale Healthcare. I wanted to do something

learning about giving through the examples of her grandparents and parents. Even today, Betsy lends her support through volunteer work at Westminster Village and to charities throughout the U.S., while Barbara volunteers for The Salvation Army.
“This has been a wonderful partnership between the Scrivners and Scottsdale Healthcare University,” says Minnie Brown, Scottsdale Healthcare supervisor training and development “These special resources really prepare the students for their medical careers.”
The Scrivners have supported Scottsdale Healthcare in a number of ways, so when the idea of sponsoring the Sim duo came along, it seemed a natural fit. “We thought this was a neat idea and a great link to education,”

Joan Hohag & Lynn Gleason
Lynn Gleason and her mom Joan Hohag were close. The two shared a family resemblance in their smiles and also in the similarities in their lifestyles in helping others. Joan recently passed away, yet her legacy of giving will continue through Lynn and the programs and services that she supported through Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. Lynn and Joan were members of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Circle of Distinction. In addition, they

contributed to the Foundation in support of home health services. “We knew the need for home health services in caring for someone who is ill and home-bound,” says Lynn. “Several years ago, my father was diagnosed with cancer. After his initial diagnosis and treatment, it was too much for us to care for him at home. Fortunately, we were able to receive help through Scottsdale Home Health.” Afterwards, Joan and Lynn became home health champions. “There is help out there… there are people who care about the quality of life for home bound and critically ill patients,” Lynn states. “So many times, from a donor perspective people only focus on inpatient care,” Lynn continues, “We know what’s it like when all you can give is just not enough, that’s why my mother and I joined together to help those who need care after they leave the hospital. ” While she is still mourning the loss of her mother and closest friend, Lynn has vowed to continue her work and her passion to help others. “She really was one of a kind,” Lynn said at Joan’s memorial. “I am so happy that we had the chance to help others through the Foundation.” n
Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation celebrates the Circle of Distinction (COD) family of donors. We salute them, and offer our sincere appreciation for their generous hearts and their quest to help others.
In Celebration of Joan Hohag 1922-2009 Daring, spunky, and adventuresome are just a few ways that friends remembered Joan Hohag who passed away on July 9. Those who knew and called Joan “friend” would describe her as a special lady, young beyond her years, with the spirit of a teenager. She loved to golf and amused her family and friends with her favorite saying, “age is a number and mine’s unlisted!” She left this world unexpectedly and far too soon; however, her legacy of love, laughter and compassion will continue through her beloved daughter, Lynn. She will be deeply missed by all for

“I want to express our heartfelt appreciation to the H.N. and Frances C. Guests enjoyed camaraderie, lovely music and a sumptuous buffet of Asian delights. The lobby and adjacent areas of the hospital proved to be a pictureperfect setting for this annual event, which honored Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Lifetime Circle of Distinction members. “Over the years, and through your generosity, you have helped Scottsdale Healthcare become a worldclass healthcare system,” said John Ferree, president of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. “Your loyalty and enthusiastic support have enabled Scottsdale Healthcare to become a destination of hope and outstanding care.”
The evening was highlighted with the dedication and opening of the 5,000 square foot H.N. and Frances C. Berger, Thomas and Joan Kalimanis Healing Garden. The courtyard garden with its floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors literally flows into the Family and Patient Waiting Area. The garden oasis includes close to 500 plants, two fountains and a series of connected patios with seating for patients, visitors and employees. The Zen-like atmosphere of the garden offered a calming background for the event, which included tours and oneon-one informational discussions with
The new addition is actually the second garden to open at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak thanks to generous gifts from our friends and neighbors. Earlier in the year, the Thompson Peak Community Garden in honor of Mary Alice Sheely, opened and now serves as a scenic outdoor waiting area for visitors and staff. n Pictured on opposite page, Joan and Tom Kalimanis celebrate the opening of the Healing Garden. Portraits of Philanthropy Bob Duffy
is a great communicator. In fact, you could say that communications was key to his success in sports, business and philanthropy. Bob’s journey has taken him to many places, yet the consummate businessman has reached out along the way to help others. Originally from New York, Bob attended Colgate University on a basketball scholarship. He had a three-year career in the NBA with the St. Louis Hawks and Detroit Pistons. Then, at age 24, he returned to Colgate to serve as Head Coach for the men’s basketball team. It was during that time that Bob made two key decisions –he realized that even though he enjoyed his time as a coach, he wanted to work in the business field and decided that he wanted to share his “good luck” with others. That’s when Bob set
a goal to one-day establish a scholarship program at Colgate to benefit a deserving student, someone “young and ambitious,” someone a little like Bob Duffy. Bob quickly realized his goal of moving into the business world and discovered his talent for sales and communications. He joined Eastman Radio as a sales representative and quickly advanced his way up to Sales Manager. From Eastman, he joined a company owned by Cox Broadcasting where he became President. Throughout his career, Bob took notice and honed his entrepreneurial skills. Soon, he got the hang of the radio business and set out to establish his own companies – Duffy Broadcasting Corporation and Christal Radio Rep Firm. “I put a lot of energy into my work,” Bob explains. “I was always looking forward, setting new goals, looking at new ways to do things.”
sit still.” So, Bob devoted his time to philanthropy. He joined the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation Board of Trustees in 1998. He went on to serve as Board Chairman for four years and at the same time was appointed to Scottsdale Healthcare’s Board of Directors. “Healthcare is an important part of our community. I became inspired by the wonderful Foundation staff as well as my work on the Board,” Bob says. “I jumped right into my role and I learned so much. I appreciate the energy and commitment of the physicians and the nurses to their patients. It made me want to do more.” Bob’s quest to help spanned across Scottsdale Healthcare – his generosity benefited the building of Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak, the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, the acquisition of the daVinci Robotic System, the Trauma Center at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center and many other key services.
Jen Redman
has many roles – wife, mother, employee; however, since the birth of her daughters four years ago, she has a new one, crusader. In 2005, Jen and her husband Brent were anxiously awaiting the birth of their twins. Back then, words like neonatal, C-Pap and blood transfusion were foreign and had no meaning. Times have changed. Little Callie and Brooke Redman entered the world on Dec. 10, 2005, three months before their due date. Callie weighed 2 lbs 6 ounces and Brooke weighed a mere 1 pound, 15 ounces. Jen had what is called twin-to-twin transfusion where one twin robs the other of fluids while still in the mother’s womb. Even though the Redmans knew that it was possible this condition could affect them, they weren’t prepared for the premature birth and prolonged hospital stay they experienced. “The first few weeks following their births were very scary,” says Jen. Callie, even though she weighed more at birth, was much sicker than Brooke and we were afraid that at any minute we would lose her.” The Redmans spent nine weeks in the Bowe Special Care Nursery Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
NICU reunion. The reunion is a yearly event which celebrates the “graduation” and milestones of the Bowe Special Care Nursery NICU babies. A very grateful Jen and Brent attended along with Callie and Brooke. It was at the reunion that a nurse approached Jen about beginning a parents group that could help raise money for the unit.

Philanthropy “He was also very generous,” says Bob’s mother, Marian Duffy. “He shared his good fortune with his father and me. He did set up that scholarship at Colgate University, in fact, it like Bob, is still going strong!”
Bob Duffy receives the Spirit of Philanthropy award.

At age 43, Bob decided to take a rest from the hustle and bustle of the communications world. He retired to Arizona, but “didn’t want to just
Last fall, before a standing room only crowd, he was recognized by Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation at the Association of Fundraising Professionals awards dinner and received the 2008 Spirit of Philanthropy award. “Giving is in my genes,” Bob says. “I consider my work in nonprofit as a career; I put my heart and soul into it. I don’t know who benefits the most…me or them. Somehow I think I came out ahead!”
As Jen adjusted to motherhood and the unique demands of two preemies, she also developed a bond with the nurses and the other NICU parents. Jen soon found a family in the Bowe Special Care Nursery NICU staff and parents. “I spent so much time at the unit; the staff around me were the ones who offered me hope, encouragement and a much needed helping hand.” After the girls were discharged and life returned to a new normal, the Redmans attended the Bowe Special Care Nursery
“When I heard about the opportunity, I thought ‘why not, I have experience?’ I jumped in and helped organize a fund raising event,” comments Jen. “I discovered that the more we reached out with our message to help these babies, the more people listened and responded and ‘needed’ us; along the way, we grew closer as a group. We all share this wonderful, common bond as parents of these great children.” The first fundraiser proved so successful that Jen took the lead as co-chair of the group now named Little Legends. And from there as the saying goes, the rest is history. With Jen’s leadership and passion for philanthropy, Little Legends has raised more than $100,000 to benefit the Bowe Special Care Nursery NICU. In addition to the annual graduation and reunion, fun events like Photos With Santa, “Scoops of Love” and an Easter Egg Hunt have been added to the calendar of yearly activities.
Through it all, Jen has not lost sight of the most important, or make that the two most important reasons for it all... her children. “I feel a real sense of purpose with Little Legends,” Jen continues. “I want Callie and Brooke to know and understand how everyone came together to help us so that someday they too can help others.” Being a Bowe Special Care Nursery NICU parent can be trying, so Jen along with her dedicated team from Little Legends is now forming a mentor program. “Our goal is to provide helpful tips from someone who has been there, done that,” Jen says. n

2009 Scottsdale Healthcare
G lf Classic The Scottsdale Healthcare Golf Classic is just that… a classic pro-am tournament set among a beautiful course. And, the setting was just right for this year’s 2009 Golf Classic held at McCormick Ranch Golf Club. Participants enjoyed two days of golf and an exciting gala reception, silent/live auction at the Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center. Longtime Golf Classic supporters Cathy and Drue Engels were recognized (and surprised) at the dinner and gala. “Cathy and Drue have given tremendously of their time, energy and resources for more than eight years to make the Golf Classic so successful,” said John Ferree, president of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. The Engels were honored with a crystal pineapple, the symbol of hospitality.
Each year, NOAH clinics provide dental and medical care for thousands of children and their families. Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Golf Classic sponsors, participants and volunteers for their generous support. A special thank you goes out to the Golf Classic committee, who give their time, talents and resources each year to ensure the success of the event and the NOAH clinics. n
“We want to thank all of our sponsors and everyone who participated in the 2009 Golf Classic,” adds Marty Wegner, Ken’s co-chairman. “The Golf Classic is one of the Valley’s premier charity golf tournaments. Golfers had a great time and helped local families. All proceeds benefit the Neighborhood Outreach Action for Health (NOAH) program.”

Back at the links, the Classic proved to be a winning event for some lucky golfers. “This year, excitement was the key element,” says Ken Gordon, co-chairman of the event. “We had not one, but two hole-in-one winners!”

Gift of Life Lodging Provides
Home-Away-From-Home for Cancer Patients Can anything good come from cancer? For Delores “Del” Lofton a Florida Keys resident, the answer is a resounding “yes!” That response would probably surprise most people that is until you meet Del. Her story, like her outlook on life is amazing. Del was first diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer) some twenty years ago. The mother of four has fought hard all these years undergoing chemotherapy and a multitude of treatments. The cancer has taken her eyesight, yet she continues her quest to find her cure. A little over a year ago, Del received a phone call from her physician that would change the course in her fight. “He was so excited,” she says. “He had just come back from a conference where he heard about a clinical trial for basal cell carcinoma. I figured ‘why not?’ We’ve tried everything and I have nowhere else to go for treatment.” She soon found herself at Scottsdale Healthcare’s Clinical Research Institute (SCRI) at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center. An eager clinical trial participant, Del quickly discovered that she would need to make frequent visits to SCRI. The traveling took a toll on her; however,
Del found that the comforts of home were not that far away. Thanks to generous donors, she had help along the way through the Gift of Life Lodging program. Created by Country Inn & Suites and the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, the Gift of Life Lodging provides a complimentary stay for patients in need. Many like Del travel long distances to receive treatment at SCRI.
Del admits she has learned a lot in her journey. Through her strong faith, and circle of family and friends, she is an inspiration to many. “In these hard times, people are looking for hope and love. I am blessed, that through my suffering I have found both.” n
In essence, Del has found that the program has been a lifeline. “Being able to stay at Country Inn & Suites just across the street from the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center has been wonderful,” she says. “It is so convenient and the people treat you like family. This means a lot when you’re far from home and participating in a clinical trial.” “Gift of Life Lodging is a tremendous way to help those in their fight against cancer. Before we were able to offer this program, many of our patients had a difficult time finding accommodations to meet their needs,” said Joanne Gain, vice president of major gifts for Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation.
Linda Britton an d Del Lofton receiv Scottsdale Country e a warm welcome at the Inn & Suites.
