“The government has asked the US Federation Aviation Administration (FAA) to postpone its July inspection of Thai civil aviation operations,” reports the Bangkok Post. This is just like when you’d ask your teacher, “Teacher, can we postpone the test to next week.” Well, actually, no. Aviation is a bit more important than an exam, given that our lives are at stake. Which makes Thailand’s request more like asking your drunk minivan driver if he’d consider checking into rehab before the end of the rainy season. “Please continue driving at breakneck speeds and swerving through lanes, but really, alcohol dependency isn’t something to be ashamed of. Here, let me jot down the number of Bangkok’s AA chapter. Give them a call.” Speaking of booze, as we continue to fly Thai aviation companies that are deemed so dangerous no first world country wants them in their airports anymore, shouldn’t we at least get some perks to reward our foolhardiness? How about free Xanax? Or at the very least unlimited drinks for economy passengers? “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. This flight has not been approved by the regulatory boards of the US, the EU or Japan. As such, we are happy to announce we will serve double-pour martinis during the entire duration of the flight in order to numb your senses and ease your completely rational fears. Drink up and thank you for flying with us today.” OK, we know, we know. Flying is still a zillion times safer than, say, riding a bicycle. Given the risks we take every day just crossing the street to grab lunch, international aviation regulators should understand that, here in Thailand, we just have different standards. [Insert shirt and button metaphor here.] What really pisses us off is not so much dying, it’s dying in a tragic accident caused by poor people. If the drunken driver is the heir of a beverage empire, or if the pilot is French (so chic!), or if the doctor who botched the anesthesia is, well, a doctor—we’re cool. We know that shit happens. Just give our next of kin B200,000 compensation, or B2 million if you’re feeling really generous, and we’ll quietly go into the night and promise to not haunt you for as long as you give us red Fanta and unripe bananas. Still, it’s hard to be rational about fear of flying. The idea that Thais would voluntarily step into giant aluminum tubes hurtling through the skies at 900km/h, with no cell phone coverage and a pretty dismal on-board shopping experience, is mind blowing. As the risks keep increasing and the rewards dwindling—Harrod’s is now at Paragon, Pierre Herme at Emquartier, Ralph Lauren has a flagship store at Central Embassy—really, the question is no longer, “Why are we not afraid?” It’s why do we even bother flying at all?

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Second lines
Not: Collaborations
Collaborations were getting really lazy: combine some street artist and some mainstream shoe brand, or a high street shop and an haute couture designer and, voila, you’ve got a cash-cow collection. We’re much more excited about affordable second lines from here (see page 6) and abroad, such as T. Wang and PS by Paul Smith.
Hot: Running
Not: Long-haul flights
You probably got way too much traveling done with all the holidays in April and May. It’s time you save up and boost the local economy by swapping your sushi expeditions to Tokyo for runs throughout Thailand. See our roundup (page 12).
STREET TALK The Ministry of Culture has rolled out a campaign encouraging young people to dress in “traditional” Thai clothing. Central Group and The Mall Group are now both offering discounts to people who dress in antiquated Thai costume, and even Burger King is giving out free hamburgers to those wearing national dress. Cheewachon “Naam” Piyason, 34, and Chada “Chancha” Wannapong, 30, belong to Taeng Thai Sabai Ngam Siam Phusa Niyom (Siamese Fashionista), a group dedicated to promoting Thai traditional clothing. We met up with them to see exactly how they interpret “traditional,” and what relationship this clothing bears to modern Bangkok life. How did your group form?
Hot: Alt has-beens
Not: Pop has-beens
We’re finally seeing the end of a wave of ’90s boy bands (Blue [see page 32], Backstreet Boys, Boyzone) that submerged Krungthep for a few weeks. But don’t go thinking they’ll be followed by the latest and edgiest indie bands. Instead, brace yourselves for Muse (Oct 23) and The Prodigy (Aug 11).
Chancha: It began when I started to look around the city and wonder why Thai people no longer wear our traditional outfits. I see so many people in many countries in Asia wearing their traditional outfits so proudly as part of their daily life. What’s missing from Thai people’s hearts? Why are Thais, who are so patriotic, not expressing it by wearing their unique national dress? How do you feel about the Ministry of Culture efforts to promote Thai traditional costumes?
Hot: Food truck restaurants
Not: Street food
By now, you must have heard of Soi 38’s street food stalls’ impending demise (see page 22). Not only are our sidewalks’ cooks moving into malls faster than you can say pad fack, but now the food trucks are packing up too. Formerly mobile kitchens Holy Cheese and Banh Mi Bo are now proper restaurants. We blame global warming.
Chancha: I don’t want people to see it as a trend or something you should wear in order to get the occasional discount at a shopping mall. Our objective is to invite everyone who wants to wear Thai dress in public to not be afraid and join us.
BK iPad app
bkmagazine/bkapp
It has been pointed out in the media that much of Thailand’s population traditionally dressed barechested. Why do you ignore this part of our fashion heritage? Chancha: This is only because the media intend to use bare-chested Thai women to deliver a satirical message to the Ministry of Culture. It was normal for housewives to go bare-chested, indeed, but times have changed and we must consider what’s appropriate for the time we live in. Protecting your private parts is crucial. What’s your favorite period of Thai dress? Chancha: I personally like Thai dress from the early Rattanakosin periods—King Rama 1 to 4; 1782-1851— like colorful sa-bai (a form of backless shirt) and na-nang (a typical Thai wrap skirt).
get in the loop
bkmagazine.com
How much do these outfits cost and where do you get them? Chancha: People often think it’s difficult to buy Thai dress. I bought all the material to make my own dress with a budget of B360. This excludes the accessories like silver necklaces or earrings, of course, but those things are unnecessary. I think simple is best. What do you hope to achieve with your group? Chancha: We would like to preserve how our ancestors dressed. The new generation no longer wears jong kraben or sa-bai—these ancient outfits deserve to be maintained. Naam: Exactly. I want Thai dress to be seen as a normal thing that anyone can wear on any occasion. Interview by Nareerat Yoddamnern www.fb.com/SiameseFashionista

The Sister Line _____________________________________________
Can’t afford Thai designer fashion? From Milin to Vickteerut, some of Bangkok’s biggest names have released more affordable second (and third) lines. Here are the best. By Vasachol Quadri

has taken over the scene

Q&A: Milin Yuvacharuskul
Milin S/S 2015: Morning After
Mimi by Milin The buzz: After celebrating her fifth anniversary on the Thai fashion scene, designer Milin Yuvacharuskul, of the brand Milin, has launched a second fashion brand, Mimi, focusing on daily wear with a more energetic and younger look. The designer says Mimi is the kind of clothing a Milin girl would wear on vacation (see interview, right). In the Fuel-Fill collection for Spring/Summer 2015 you can expect to see lots of a basic pieces like sweatshirts, crop tops, denim shorts and mini-skirts in keeping with Milin’s ultra-sexy style.
Mimi S/S 2015: Fuel-Fill
Our picks:
What differentiates a second line from a separate brand? Personally, I don’t mind how people see it, but I’d call it another brand. I see the potential in this brand to reach a wider audience beyond Milin customers. The character of the brand leaves more room to play around with. There’s also more room for collaboration.
Available at Mimi Pop-up Store, 1/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 02-610-8000. BTS Siam. www.milin.com
Metallic crop top, Mimi, B1,650 Sleeveless crop top with sequin details, Mimi, B1,450
Mimi reminds us of your A .B.C. collection from Summer 2014 with its street-glam theme. Why launch a whole new brand? Both Mimi and the A.B.C. collection touch on street style, but they’re actually quite different. With Milin, we blend elements of street style into our cuts and pattern, which stick to the concept of something you’d wear to a party, not on a daily basis. As for Mimi, I wanted easy-to-wear pieces that Milin girls would choose on their vacation. It’s true that sometimes in Milin, there are pieces like crop tops and jerseys, but these only appear in some collections. Fast fashion has taken over the scene thanks to pocket-friendly prices, so I decided to create Mimi, not as a second line, but as another brand altogether.
Denim shorts, Mimi, B2,250
Sleeveless jumpsuit, Mimi, B3,250
How has launching Mimi affected your workload? It’s double the amount of work. Mimi is still young. The brand needs a close analysis of customer behavior. But in terms of inspiration and design, each brand is independent of one other—there’s no overlap. If there’s a new technique that doesn’t fit with Milin, I know I can use it in Mimi.

cover story Q&A: Teerut “Vick” Wongwatanasin
___________________
How did Vick’s Weekend start? After working on Vickteerut for a while, I noticed that my brand wasn’t really tailored to working women. The elegant pieces are the sort of thing you’d wear on a night out, not day to day. I wanted to do something that would appeal to active women. For me, Vick’s Weekend is not a second line; it’s not something similar but more affordable. It’s a whole different concept. The things that both brands have in common: clean and simple design pieces that you can actually wear.

Vick’s Weekend by Vickteerut
Our picks:
The buzz: After six years honing his womenswear brand Vickteerut, designer Teerut “Vick” Wongwatanasin rolled out his second line in mid2014. Vick’s Weekend offers casual-yet-stylish items for women, along with more affordable prices. Inspired by Teerut’s and Pang Sudhinaraset’s (brand director) passion for traveling, the new brand comprises basic, mostly linen pieces for the modern-day active woman, while retaining Vickteerut’s minimal style and earth-tone color scheme. Available at Ari Soi 2, 02-279-1260. www.vicksweekend.com
Crop shirt, Vick’s, B3,450
Khaki A-Line skirt, Vick’s, B2,800
Checked cigarette trousers, Vick’s, B3,900
How has launching Vick’s Weekend affected your workload? Vick’s is easier than Vickteerut; it’s not a brand that needs a lot of detail. There are no abstract inspirations. We play around with new fabrics and new colors to go with basic forms, while with Vickteerut there’s a lot of attention to technique. What makes a good second line? I personally like T-Wang by Alexander Wang because both lines look the same but come in different fabrics. All items from T-Wang can be mixed with the first line perfectly. A good second line needs to reflect the main line’s identity so that the two can be mixed together. Why do you think more Thai designers are coming out with second lines? I think Thai people are still confused with the idea of what a second line is. A second line keeps the main one’s identity with more affordable prices and easier-to-wear designs. I wouldn’t say mine fits this, as it’s something completely different. For me, the main thing is not that more Thai designers are doing second lines; the simple fact is new brands are popping up every other day. One or two collections won’t guarantee your position in the scene. You can’t just follow the trends; you need to create your own identity in order to survive.
____________________________________________________________________ ASV by Asava The buzz: Designer Polpat Asavaprapha founded Asava in 2008, putting the focus on elegant womenswear with timeless designs. Two years later he launched ASV featuring the same sophisticated fabrics and techniques but with more casual patterns and lower prices. Asava’s latest spring/ summer collection, The State of Mind, goes down the sophisticated, red carpet route, while ASV’s, The Hippie Ingenue, takes inspiration from the 1970s with items like doubled-breasted blazers and flared pants that you can actually wear to the office. Available at 1/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 080-049-1335. BTS Siam

Playhound and Play Too by Greyhound The buzz: One of Thailand’s longest standing designer brands, Greyhound continues to enjoy a huge following to this day. The brand started out in 1980 as purely menswear, before launching women’s items and building up a reputation for stylish, minimal-boyish casual wear. In 2002, the second line Playhound was born, taking Greyhound’s concept more towards the street with playful and outgoing styles, and cheaper prices. Play II is the latest addition to the ‘Hound family, running under the Playhound brand. For spring/summer 2015, both Playhound and Play II have both unveiled collections titled The Art School, but the latter is even more colorful, with plenty of prints. Perhaps the best thing is that all three brands can be mixed and matched effortlessly. Available at 3/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd.,02-252-3861. BTS Siam

____________________________________________________________________ Garden and Flynow III by Flynow The buzz: Garden is the latest member of the Flynow family founded by Somchai Songwattana in 1983. Known for its sophisticated cuts and unusual patterns, as well as lots of prints, the main line rules Thailand’s runways these days. Flynow III sticks to the unique prints but has a greater focus on daily wear and collaborations with artists like Chira “Gui” Chirapravati Na Ayudhya, guitarist of Samurai Loud, and Jeep Kongdechakul, owner of the Ballet Shoes brand. As for Garden, it was launched in 2013 and, similar to Flynow III, puts heavy emphasis on prints. The items are casual in nature, ready-to-wear and can easily be mixed with the other lines. Roll Out the Matte
Set to open this Jul 1, Snow Town looms as a new way to escape the heat without flying to Japan. Located on the fifth floor of the Gateway Ekamai mall, it claims to be the largest indoor snow shopping mall in Southeast Asia, covering an area of over 3,000 sq meters. The themed village will comprise restaurants from Hokkaido, such as Steak no Don, and Hanabatake Bokujo alongside shops and attractions. The artificial snow is said to be 30-40cm deep, allowing such activities as skiing (apparently lessons will be offered), snowboarding and snowball fights. Other attractions include an igloo-like Kamakura snow house and Oekaki interactive zone. There’s no word on pricing yet. 5/F, Gateway Ekamai, 982/22 Sukhumvit Rd., 095-547-6870. BTS Ekkamai

The total matte makeup look is still going strong this summer. In keeping with the trend, German makeup brand Make Up Factory has launched its new Mat Wanted Collection. The highlight is the Eye Colors Quattro (B1,300) palette, which comes with four earth-tone eyeshadow shades that suit both a day and night look. The Mat Blusher (B1,100) is available in two colors, offering a natural blush look with no glowing glitter. The long-lasting Mat Lip Stylo (B995) gives a rich color and matte finish, while the Mat Fluid, a matte-finish lip gloss with a creamier texture to the stick, gives similar results. Every weekend from Jun 5-Jul 19, the Sheraton Grande’s Orchid Cafe features a buffet of freshly-caught and shipped, sustainable seafood, which they claim is served hours after its arrival on Thai shores. On Saturdays, these fresh delicacies are served in a dedicated new buffet called the American Sustainable Seafood Weekend Feast (B1,950 for adults; B1,000 for children), while on Sundays the seafood dishes are added to the hotel’s Jazzy Sunday Brunch (B2,500 per head including free-flow drinks). The renowned teppanyaki restaurant Mikaku from Gion district in Kyoto has just opened its first branch outside Japan, here in Bangkok. Operated by a family for more than 80 years, the restaurant is known for its expert selection and preparation of premium beef teppanyaki. At this branch, Kenji, the family’s third-generation owner and chef mans the grill himself. Selecting only A4-5 graded wagyu from Kobe, he guarantees that the hand-sliced tenderloin and sirloin are at the perfect thickness, cooked using the family’s signature technique. Don’t miss the melt-in-your-mouth oilyaki teppanyaki (thinly sliced tenderloin, B2,800/100g). 2/F, above Maison Eric Kayser, 103/1 Thonglor Between Soi 3-5, 02-7129080. There’s a new food truck in town, anchored mainly to the freshly-opened Wishbeer Home Bar (see above) but also roaming around the city’s various markets and food events. Deli-Q specializes in Southern-style barbecue meats, which are then stuffed in options such as the pulled pork sandwich (B190) with choices of slaw and sauces. The old-fashioned grilled cheese (B150) is made Wisconsin-style from a recipe that the owner says has been passed down through generations. t’s the end of an era. One of Bangkok’s most iconic street food destinations, Sukhumvit Soi 38, looks set to make way for a new property development. The owners of the land on which the vendors are staying have given them until next February to leave the premises, but the end might actually be far nearer if BMA officials have their way. Now, it’s time to bid these cheap eats a fond farewell. 1
Congee
6
Looking down Soi 38 from BTS Thonglor, the brightlit sign for Joke Moo (Jao Gao Thonglor) may be the first thing you spot. Run by second-generation owners, this spot specializes in delicious, silky pork congee starting at a humble B35. We recommend you add B5 for a soft-boiled egg. 2
Khao Man Gai
Pad Thai
In the same courtyard you’ll find the long-standing Pad Thai Fai Look (translated to Pad Thai on Fire) stall which claims to have won the Sood Yod Jan Aroi cooking contest a few years ago. The pad Thai (B50) is made with good al dente noodles, which are a bit rounder than the ordinary flat sen jan. Have it with shrimp.
10
Pork Satay
With its heady aroma, it’s no easy task walking past Nong Pon pork satay shop on the right hand side of the soi. At B5/skewer, the pork alone is a tasty treat; even better when paired with the crispy toasted bread (B5/slice), peanut sauce and sharp arjard (shallots, cucumber, chili pepper in vinegar syrup).

Some people have already offered us spaces, like Gateway Ekkamai, in front of Bangkok University and somewhere between Asoke Soi 12-16. For me, at my age, 60, I may just stop. It’s too tiring to start again in a whole new place.
Pailin Jamsai, Pa Laem We want a place that will allow us to still be ourselves. Moving into a mall, for example, means opening times and conditions will change dramatically. It also depends on rent. If we don’t all move together, it’ll be hard for each of us to start all over again from zero. Building customers is not easy.

Mook Tao Tueng
The guay jub (wide noodles soup) stall on the right before you reach popular food truck Daniel Thaiger serves a super-satisfying soup (B50) ideal for after a tiring day. The wide noodles are well-cooked and thus retain their shape in the clear and mildly-flavored soup, while the crispy pork is to-die-for.

Icy sweets
After a big meal, we’re fans of tucking into some sweet treats from Mook Tao Tueng. Apart from its recommended tao tueng (mixed grains and jelly in longan syrup, B25) and coconut ice cream (B30), they also have warm bua loy khai wan (dumplings in coconut milk with egg, B30).
Lee Meae, Korean Stall Actually, the stalls in this area [in front of Sutti Mansion] aren’t being forced to leave at this stage. But without all the other stalls, there’ll be much less foot traffic. We may have to close down.

The Overground Bar & Cafe
The guy behind Bar 23, the legendary dive bar on Sukhumvit Soi 16, sold up and opened this slightly more arty yet equally barebones affair near Chinatown. Set in an old shop-house on the burgeoning Soi Nana (Cho Why, El Chiringuito, Tep Bar), 23 Bar & Gallery keeps the same focus on cold local beers, basic house pours and a soundtrack that flits between 90s Britpop and Rastafarian sounds. The walls are lined with the owner’s own art with more exhibitions happening upstairs, and while the seating is basic, that just means you can turn your attention to the intriguing hustle and bustle of the street.
OK, it’s not hard finding a dive bar on Sukhumvit Soi 22. But for a place with a little more character than the surrounding sexpat haunts, we suggest this music-focused hideaway run by Australian Grahame Lynch, who is also a member of the electro band Wasabi Bytes. Not only can you expect a diverse lineup of gigs and DJ sets (goth and punk to hip-hop and indie-rock) as well as comedy events (Bangkok Lyrical Lunacy), but their cocktails pack some punch; try the Trans-Siberian Express (vodka, Bols Blue curacao, pineapple, lemon and syrup, B200) or Southern Aurora (Bundaberg rum, grenadine, egg, syrup, pineapple and orange, B200). Of course, you can also slum it with a Singha, Chang, Beerlao or Asahi (B100).

Bangkok Dry When Witch’s Tavern, the popular watering hole on Thonglor, shut down a couple of years ago, the owners turned their attention to their cafe, Witch’s Pie Factory, first located on Ekkamai and now on Sukhumvit Soi 65. Now they’re back in the booze business with this pokey little joint right next to the pie shop. You can still expect a semi-haunted-house vibe thanks to decorations kept from the old bar, as well as some huge liquor shelves. One of the owners is a big fan of gin, which you can tell not only from all the bottles of Hendrick’s and Tanqueray, but also from his homemade spirits (there’s a little distilling machine out the back). Take a spot at the counter and try his gin with tonic and a slice of mango and black pepper (B240) or in the Bangkok Dry Negroni (B280). It’s seemingly always filled with locals chewing the fat with the talkative owners, making it just the kind of bar you’d like on your own soi. Bob Harley Bar Run by British writer Kristy Turner and her Thai partner who previously operated a beachside bar on Koh Samed, Bob Harley brings a ramshackle reggae-indebted flavor to Udomsuk. Yod’s dreadlocks alone foretell a soundtrack of Bob Marley and Thailand’s T-Bone, along with glow in the dark wall paint and lots of red, green and yellow. Here, you’ll also find some of the cheapest cocktails and beer along Sukhumvit with concoctions like Malibu Beach (Malibu rum, orange juice, pineapple juice and grenadine syrup) starting at B100 and Black Magic Women (blue curacao, tequila, vodka, grenadine syrup, lime and pineapple juice) going for a mere B150. (Leo and Singha are B50, while San Miguel Light is B70). It’s also the setting for occasional events like Bangkok Lyrical Lunacy and Wednesday writer meet-ups. Udomsuk Soi 56 (two doors away from the front of the soi), 085-804-0451. Open daily 5pm-1am. www.fb.com/ bobharleybarbangkok

Jing Jok Bar Since J. Boroski Mixology is not so secret anymore, this tiny bar is arguably Thonglor’s most under-the-radar hidey-hole. The name, Jing Jok, translates to gecko, which the Japanese believe brings charm, happiness and safety. The decor hardly screams Thonglor: brick walls, a long white bar and a few stools. Here, as if the cocktails aren’t potent enough, you can opt for the all-you-can-drink promotion (women B400/hour, men B600/hour) covering whiskey (including Black Label, Chivas Regal, Jameson), beers (Singha, Heineken), wine, shots and assorted cocktails. While you drink, you can indulge in some billiards, darts and karaoke (not to mention in-house drinking games). They are currently in soft opening, but will have new promotions for the official opening in June, including Tuesday ladies’ night and come-four-pay-three every Saturday. Be warned: The owner may ply you with shots. 2/F, Top Charoen Optics, Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), between soi 14 and 16, 099-953-7973. Open daily 4pm-2am. www.fb.com/ jingjokbar

The menu starts with the chef's selection of three petit amuse-bouche (such as coconut marshmallow and contrieu chocolate truffle), followed by fresh granita in flavors like watermelon. Finish with a signature main dessert such as chocolate tart or pink peppercorn ice cream and red wine sauce.

Cupcake Love
This cafe celebrates the Peanuts gang through its decor and cake decorations. The menu covers a range of choux cream (chocolate, green tea, caramel, vanilla) as well as ice-cream sandwiches. Another favorite is the "Chocolate Together" (a round brownie topped with a doughnut shaped chunk of ice cream). It's all very cute and you can wash it down with sodas, smoothies, tea or coffee.
Like its name suggests, Cup Cake Love specializes in cupcakes and has five branches citywide. We recommend their signature cupcakes: red velvet and ulimate chocolate. For bite-size lovers, they offer a set of four mini cupcakes. The place also serves blue apple soda, lemonade and Dilmah tea. Custom-made cupcakes for special occasions can also be ordered five days in advance with a mininum of 12 cupcakes.

CHIANG MAI
This iconic dessert cafe started off serving Thai desserts more than 10 years ago. The owner's daughter, who's also behind the famous cakes at Let Them Eat Cake, added French pastries to the shop and turned it into a veritable one-stop destination for sweets. Recommended Thai desserts are the tua paeb (rice crepe filled with mung beans) and kanom sod sai (coconut milk custard filled with coconuts) while popular French options include the rose St.Honore and the Thai tea tart.
Chiang Mai sure loves its desserts. But Gelabar stands out from other places in this densely-packed cafe neighborhood by offering up delicious Italian-style gelato. Many of the icy selections are made from fresh fruit, but more indulgent fare comes in the form of full desserts like the hot cake with Ferrero ice-cream, strawberry cheese pie with ice-cream and yogurt and crepe chocolate lava creme brulee.
Opened by the second generation of owners from Chiang Mai’s old favorite, Puengnoi Bakery, Mont Blanc offers delicious Japanese-style French cakes and pastries, which combine the refinement of viennoiseries with the colorful and creative style and garnishing of the Japanese—best paired with tea or fruit juice. Don’t limit yourself to the cute cupcakes, though, as the sorbet ice cream is very refreshing. Of Mont Blanc’s four branches, the outlet on Nimmanhaemin Soi 2, a 70’s-style house, is the cutest and most private. The chef here also organizes baking classes for groups of four to eight people.

A doctor and his wife have turned their house into a homey cafe with tables scattered among lush green trees and huge ferns, so it’s easy to relax as you sip a cup of tea or their unique Sylvanian coffee. This place promises strong, bitter brews that go well with their sweet homemade pastries, which range from fruit mousses to fluffy carrot or macadamia cakes. If he’s in a good mood, the owner will even give you a guided tour of the fern garden.
With outdoor seating in the garden and plenty of shade, this vintage-style cafe is a welcome respite in the achingly hip Nimmanhaemin neighborhoood. Indulge yourself with the honey toast waffle topped with fresh fruits, the coconut pie, or a slice of Thai tea crepe cake.

Late last year, Dean & Deluca launched its first proper table-service restaurant, The Mezzanine, at its mothership branch in Mahanakhon Cube. Tucked up among the building’s ventilation pipes, above the stone-blanketed deli below, is a small and far more moodily-lit space with a few tables and chairs, faux-brick walls and a proper bar. The best part about sitting up here is not the different menu—it’s mostly comprised of the deli’s favorites—but the fact that you’re removed from downstairs’ confusing array of service methods, food counters and tills. In addition to D&D staples like sandwiches, salads and reheated favorites from all over the world, the menu

After operating Prung as a food delivery and catering service for several years, Aphichana Sartwaha, the wife of singer Po Yokee Playboy, has now moved her business into a proper home in the Prachachuen district, a little outside central Bangkok. The menu mainly focuses on Southern Thai recipes, with plenty of tangy and spicy flavors. Prachachuen has a reputation for being a great area for foodies—it’s where Southern Thai specialist Baan Ice first started—and Prung is no exception. Unlike its homey-looking neighbors, this two story shop-house is decked out minimally with a black ceiling and gray brick walls, while a bright red facade and golden sign help attract customers. also contains a lengthy list of Mezzaninespecific a la carte dishes like fish and chips and striploin steak. Some of the food, for the price, is excellent. The clam chowder (B225), for instance, is thick, creamy and well-seasoned, with plenty of clams floating around. The hand-cut fries (B45), too, are deliciously crisp, with fluffy, flaky edges. They taste as good as they look, cut from potatoes which are sweet and just a little waxy. But in other ways, the restaurant falls flat. Clearly, they’re running a tight ship in the kitchen, with dishes flying out within five minutes of us being seated, but we worry it’s at the expense of quality. The 180g New York striploin steak (B495), for example, comes cooked medium-to-well or nothing. And anyone could tell our shepherd’s pie (B495) needed to gratinate for longer, the shards of totally colorless cheese still holding their shape under an oily film. They no longer use fresh pasta from beloved Italian restaurant Appia, and our taglioni with walnut and pistachio pesto (B190) certainly didn’t taste like it. When dessert comes around, you’re also asked to head back downstairs and pick for yourself, though the lemon meringue pie and plain cheesecake (both B225) are worth getting up for. So deli or Mezzanine? When you stick to the dishes you can get downstairs anyway, then sitting in The Mezzanine makes life a whole lot simpler. But it’s a dark world up there compared to the pristine-white space below. catering expertise is reflected in the long menu of dishes, though not all are as good as the Southern specialties. We highly recommend the kua kling moo (stir-fried pork with chili, turmeric and herbs, B130), which is full of flavor and spices, though the seasonal vegetables served alongside it don’t quite have the variety we’ve found in other places. The kanomjeen nam ya tai (rice vermicelli with Southern coconut curry, B100) is brilliantly aromatic and has plenty of texture from the mashed fish curry. Prung’s other dishes are still pleasant enough, but less so. The gaeng lueang koon krapong (yellow spicy soup with giant elephant ear plants and seabass, B150), for instance, comes in a pallidlooking broth that lacks depth, though the flavor is still sour and spicy, while the cherng pla grai tod (deep-fried clown knife fish belly, B120 per piece) is a bit of a disaster, with a bland flavour profile and very fatty fish. Other Central dishes are pretty unorthodox, like the khamoo nam daeng boran (traditional braised pork knuckle in red soup, B150), which is cooked in a salty sauce at odds with the normally sweet dish (not to mention the sad, reheated boiled eggs at an extra B20 each). The taste, however, is surprisingly pleasant, and goes well with their nicely textured Chinese bun (B40). For those who love Southern food but not Baan Ice’s prices, we’re happy to recommend Prung.

Kom-Ba-Wa Kitsch and colorful, this Japanese restaurant in Suan Phlu shakes up the genre. The buzz: The new project from restaurateur Fred Meyer (Issaya Siamese Club, Namsaah Bottling Trust and Pizza Massilia) resides in a cutely-decorated shop-house in the rising Suan Phlu neighborhood and serves Japanese dishes with premium ingredients. The decor: Every inch of this single shop-house is stylishly fitted out with European and Oriental touches. Red and floral wallpaper dominates the front of house, where a high ceiling ensures the space feels airy rather than cramped. Things are more intimate at the back of the room where the sushi bar sits. Antiques like French Empire brass chandeliers and candelabras complement the kitschy Japanese ceramic tableware. Upstairs there’s an even more colorful private room.
28
The food and drinks: Internationally-trained Japanese chef Goro Takatsu (Japan, Peru, Mexico, Spain) integrates modern cooking methods and presentation with traditional Japanese flavors. On top of premium sushi like scallops (B790) and uni (B960), appetizers include the Rosebeef (240-day aged Black Angus with yuzu ponzu dressing, B390) and black cod miso gyoza with chili soy sauce (B410). Main dishes showcase even more of his creativity. The squid ink ramen with fresh Maine lobster and Japanese uni sauce (B1,500) is not to be missed, boasting a surprising yet satisfying pasta-like quality, as is the flavor-packed 60-day aged Tajima wagyu steak served with ponzu jelly (B1,750). Desserts are even cuter than the crockery, especially the moji with red bean mousse and strawberry jelly (B250). For drinks, there’s a
selection of premium sakes like Dassai (from B1,900/720ml), Kizakara (B950/720ml) and Garanryu (from B1,550/720ml), as well as Japanese whiskey from both well-known distilleries like Nikka (B220) and artisanal producers like Eigashima (from B490). Can’t decide? Try the signature Hokkaido bellini (Nagono peach sake and Prosecco, B390). Why you should care: The small joint pairs innovative food with well-considered decor. Kom-Ba-Wa dares to be different, a rare occurence when it comes to Japanese food in Bangkok. Natcha Sanguankiattichai.

now HIGHLIGHT Les Pecheurs des Perles Director and choreographer Jitti Chompee's latest production looks to be the most unique performance at this year’s French-Thai Festival. By Natchaya Angsatitanan
HUNGRY?
For this year’s Le Fete festival, celebrated Thai dance choreographer Jitti Chompee returns to Bangkok with his latest performance, a contemporary re-imagining of Georges Bizet’s lesser-known opera Les Pecheurs des Perles (The Pearl Fishers). Inspired by Picasso’s cubism, an avant-garde visual art style of the early-20th century, Jitti completely reworked the story of two fishermen who turn against one another when they both fall in love with the same woman. Though the original opera is best known for its duet, "Au fond du temple saint" (The Pearl Fishers Duet), Jitti says his production has shifted focus from the music to the use of space. “I don’t expect the audience in general to fully understand everything,” he says. “What I really want is to give them a chance to use their imagination freely to interpret this new kind of stage art and to broaden their knowledge on minimalist and site-specific performances.” Like Jitti’s previous work with the 18 Monkeys dance company, the performance is tailored around the site, in this case the Rose Hotel, all of which is going to serve as a stage. Jitti has also arranged the original operatic score into minimal piano pieces. The casting is similarly unconventional, drawn from Jitti’s chance encounters with people while traveling around Eastern Europe. “I’m working with unique people who view performing arts with an eye unyielding to the conservative traditions of opera,” he explains. “The fun part of this production is blending all the performers—photographer, dancer, singer, actress—and the space at the venue into one harmonic rhythm.” Among the performers is the Spanish photographer Juan Carlos Toledo from the Nationale Reisopera dance company. “Working with Jitti is a shock,” says Toledo. “He did crazy things like having me take photos of him half-naked in the snow or in the forest. Jitti broke all the rules and created new visual culture and customs.” Thai performers are taking part as well: one is dancer Klittin Kiatmetha, and the other actress Pattarasuda Anuman Rajdhon. For the roles of the two fishermen, Jitti cast two French dancers-turned-opera singers, Yannick Badier and Yannis Francois, whom he met at Greifswald Dance Festival, Germany. “People shook their heads when they heard about my idea, labeling me a weirdo,” he says. “But these guys, maybe because they are weird too, lent me their talents.”

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): Nobel Prize-winning physicists Wolfgang Pauli and Niels Bohr were both amused at how counterintuitive their innovative theories seemed. Once Pauli was lecturing a group of eminent scientists about a radical new hypothesis. Bohr got out of his seat in the audience and walked up to the front to interrupt his colleague. “We all agree that your theory is crazy,” Bohr told Pauli. “The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct. My own feeling is that it is not crazy enough.” Pauli defended himself. “It is crazy enough!” he said. But Bohr was insistent. Gemini, are your new ideas and possibilities crazy enough to be true? SPECIAL SCREENING
BANGKOK GAY & LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2015
Futuro Beach
Quick Change
Attitude Magazine Thailand in association with Film Archive presents screenings of uplifting and inspiring LGBT films. Highlights include:
HOW TO WIN AT CHECKERS (EVERY TIME) (THAI) Comedy. Korean-American director Josh Kim’s debut film is a gay adaptation of two stories by Thai writer Rattawut Lapcharoensan, in which a Thai boy who idolizes his older brother gets a sharp introduction to the realities of life.
QUICK CHANGE (THE PHILIPPINES) Drama. Director Eduardo W. Roy Jr. explores the hidden transsexual community in Manila in this documentary-like production.
FUTURO BEACH (BRAZIL/GERMANY) Drama. Handsome lifeguard Donato is haunted by memories of a guy he failed to save. Then he meets Konrad, a friend of the deceased, and they fall in love.
THE BLUE HOUR (THAI) Drama. Selected for the 65th Berlin International Film Festival; a bullied teenager (Atthaphan Poonsawas) befriends and has a sexual relationship with a mysterious gay boy (Oabnithi Wiwattanawarang) at a haunted abandoned pool, before dark events take place. This screening is invite-only.
CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): You’ve wandered into an awkward phase of your cycle. Missed connections have aroused confusion. Disjointed events have led to weirdness. I’ve got a suggestion for how you might be able to restore clarity: Make a foray into a borderland and risk imaginative acts of heroism. Does that sound too cryptic or spooky? How about if I say it like this: Go on an unpredictable quest that will free your trapped vitality, or try a mysterious experiment that will awaken your sleeping magic. P.S. For best results, ask for help every step of the way. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Gesamtkunstwerk is a German word that can be translated as “total art work” or “all-embracing art form.” It refers to a creative masterpiece that makes use of several genres. The 19th-century composer Richard Wagner had this in mind when he produced his opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung, which included orchestral music, singing, theater and literature. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to synthesize and coordinate all the things you do best, and express them with a flourish. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Defender was a popular video game that young people played in video arcades during the 1980s. Fifteen-year-old Steve Juraszek was profiled in Time magazine after he racked up a record-breaking 16 million points while playing the game for 16 hours straight. But when his high school principal found out that Juraszek had skipped classes to be at the arcade, he was suspended. I’m wondering if there may soon be a similar development in your own life, Virgo. Will you have to pay a small price for your success? You should at least be prepared to risk an acceptable loss in order to accomplish an important goal. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): People I meet are sometimes taken aback by the probing questions I ask them. Recently an acquaintance said to me, “Why don’t you feel driven to talk about yourself all the time, like everyone else?” I told him the truth: “Being curious is just the way I was made. Maybe it’s because of my Mercury in Gemini, or my seventh-house sun, or my three planets in Libra.” I suspect that you are due to go through a phase similar to the mode I’m so familiar with. You need to be extra inquisitive. You’ll benefit from digging as deeply as you dare. The more information you uncover, the better your decisions will be. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): I love to watch an evolved Scorpio get his or her needs met by helping other people get their needs met. It’s thrilling to behold the paradoxical Scorpio assets in action: the combination of manipulativeness and generosity; the animal magnetism working in service to the greater good; the resourceful willpower that carries out hidden agendas and complex strategies designed to make the world a better place. I expect to see a lot of this idiosyncratic wisdom from you in the coming weeks. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): “Would that life were like the shadow cast by a wall or a tree,” says the Talmud. “But it is like the shadow of a bird in flight.” That’s a lyrical sentiment, but I don’t agree with it. I’ve come to prefer the shimmering dance over the static stance. The ever-shifting play of light and dark is more interesting to me than the illusion of stability. What
about you, Sagittarius? I suggest that in the immediate future you cultivate an appreciation for the joys and challenges of the shimmering dance. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The core of your horoscope comes from the poem “A Color of the Sky” by Tony Hoagland. Imagine that you are the “I” who is saying the following: “What I thought was an end turned out to be a middle. What I thought was a brick wall turned out to be a tunnel. What I thought was an injustice turned out to be a color of the sky.” Please understand that speaking these words might not make total sense to you yet. But I urge you to speak them anyway. Doing so will help generate the transformations you need in order to make them come true. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Lessons in luck are coming your way. Will they help you attract more luck? Maybe. Will they show you how to make better use of your luck? Maybe. I’ve assembled a few enigmatic teachings to prepare you. 1. “Luck is believing you’re lucky.” - Tennessee Williams. 2. “It is a great piece of skill to know how to guide your luck even while waiting for it.” - Baltasar Gracián. 3. “Sometimes not getting what you want is a brilliant stroke of luck.” - Lorii Myers. 4. “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” - Samuel Goldwyn. 5. “You’ve got to try your luck at least once a day, because you could be going around lucky all day and not even know it.” Jimmy Dean. 6. “Go and wake up your luck.” Persian proverb. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The word “boudoir” means a woman’s bedroom. But hundreds of years ago, it had a more specific definition. It was a room where a well-bred girl was sent when she was pouting. “Boudoir” is derived from the French verb bouder, which means “to sulk.” If it were in my power, Pisces, I would send you to the sulking room right now. In my opinion, a good long sulk would be just the right prescription for you. It would trigger brainstorms about how to change the soggy, foggy conditions that warranted your sulking in the first place. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The Persian scholar Avicenna was so well-rounded in his knowledge that he wrote two different encyclopedias. Even as a teenager he was obsessed with learning. He got especially consumed with trying to master Aristotle’s Metaphysics, which did not easily yield its secrets to him. He read it 40 times, memorizing every word. When he finally understood it, he was so excited he celebrated by giving out money and gifts to destitute strangers. I suspect you will soon be having an equivalent breakthrough, Aries. Congratulations in advance! TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): When it’s rush hour in Tokyo, unwieldy crowds of commuters board the trains and subways. They often need help at squeezing in. Railway workers known as oshiya, or pushers, provide the necessary force. Wearing crisp uniforms, white gloves, and neat hats, they cram the last stragglers into each car. I foresee the possibility of you being called on to perform a metaphorical version of the service these pushers provide. Is there a polite and respectful way for you to be indelicate in a worthy cause?

Pratarn Teeratada Pratarn Teeratada, 51, is one of the most influential figures in Thailand’s architecture and design community. In 1995, he was part of the team that founded Art4D, a pioneering art and design publication aimed squarely at creative professionals—and has been its editor-inchief ever since. Here, we talk to him about how the magazine, which just turned 20, and Thailand’s design industry, has evolved.
My magazine has changed a lot in 20 years. We thought up the original idea in an S&P cafe, just me and a couple of friends who wanted to pull off the kind of magazine that didn’t exist in Thailand. It was like drafting a constitution: celebrate young designers and respect the masters. Our first issue came out in March 1995, two years before the economic crisis hit. It had a mad, youthful energy, much inspired by David Carson’s grungy graphic style. Now it’s directed specifically at designers working in Thailand. We want to inspire those who are responsible for changing the dynamic of Bangkok.
Before Thailand’s economic crisis in 1997, there was so much advertising budget for the media. I heard one story of a buyer being fired for not using his whole budget.
sonally appreciate the subtle beauty in the work of local artists—people who know their craft and have signature touches to their work.
Thailand Architect Expo is one of the most extravagant exhibitions in Thailand. What began as a small get-together of people in the profession has turned into a massive trade fair and exhibition. I’m pleased to see that this year they tried to bring back the original spirit.
I was supposed to study an MBA at New York Institute of Technology, but I spent most of my t i m e o u tside. I left my textbooks untouched and rarely stepped foot in the library. Instead, I browsed the theaters, art galleries and old record stores.
When you have too much money, it’s easy to lose your spirit as an artist. I may run an art magazine and feature a whole lot of futuristic architecture and designers in the international spotlight, but I per-
I loved rock ’n’ roll music. I hung out in one record store so often that people mistook me for a shop clerk. In New York, I got to know Thais who later thrived in their professions: P e n - E k Ratanaruang and a bunch of guys who founded their own movie production company—GTH.
You mustn’t reject crazy ideas.
I’m a listener. When I meet someone who can potentially enhance my knowledge, I listen. Peo ple admire me for it. My job is to interpret what I’ve heard into great ideas for the magazine. Interview by Sam Nathapong
