The Life Crisis Panel
According to a poll conducted by the National Institute for Development Administration, most of us have no faith in the government which most of us are going to vote into power when we finally get elections. Therefore, we (or at least 63 percent of us) welcome the CDC’s inclusion of a military-appointed crisis committee in the draft charter that could take over all powers from any elected government. “Not I,” say you, among your circles of liberal friends while chugging down Rogue IPA, bemoaning the plight of the Rohingya and how hard it is to keep a pair of white Supergas clean. You want your elected government to be its own boss. You want to be in control. You can make to your own decisions. And frankly, we get you. It’s not like people don’t know what’s best for them. For example, purchasing that B90,000 bicycle you rode twice, that was a brilliant idea. Or that 3am decision to call in at Wong’s. Or any time you’ve eaten the Carl’s Jr. Double-Western burger. Or heading out to an outdoor craft market made of shipping containers, spending your Saturday in a sweat-drenched shirt with nothing to eat but six variations of grilled-cheese sandwich. Or the text messages you sent at some point between Wong’s and Carl’s Jr. You get our point. It’s not just elected governments that need solid oversight from retired generals and admirals. You do too. That’s why the Ministry of Communications and Magic is rolling out a new 24/7 hotline (4321) called The Life Crisis Panel, where you can get in touch with a retired admiral or army general and get fast answers to difficult questions like: “When is a good time to have sex with your boss?” “Is eating at The Smokin’ Pug a good way to lose weight if you don’t go more than twice a week?” “If I refinance my credit card with another credit card, do I get double the points?” “What kind of porn is it OK to watch during meetings? Is manga OK?” The Life Crisis Panel, because our decisions are our own worst enemy.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Hanging on
Not: Democracy
Over in Myanmar, Thein Sein has ousted his likely presidential successor, Shwe Mann, from the role of prime minister just before the upcoming elections, while here, Gen Prayuth has placed his brother in line for the top army job. Meanwhile, the NRC has proposed a military-dominated crisis panel in its latest draft charter that would have the power to overrule any elected government. So much for those latest gone-by-October-’16 remarks.
FIRST PERSON
Hot: Drinking
Not: Drinking
Drinking’s always getting better and better in this town (see page 6). But for how long? We’re starting to hear back from business owners (and prospective business owners) about suddenly finding out they’re within a 300 meter radius of a school, no matter if it’s actually a 1km hike to get there. As a result, they can’t get new liquor licenses—and you can’t get that cool new bar/cafe in your neighborhood.
Weerachon “Toe” Sattaying, 39, was once the frontman of iconic ’90s rock band, Silly Fools. With his music career behind him, Toe has lived the past six years as a dedicated Muslim, and recently launched a new food business called Company B, selling dry-aged beef under Sharia business principles. He talks to BK about losing millions in “dirty money,” Islamic armed group ISIS, Thailand’s Southern dispute, and why music is a sin. There is no religion in the world but God. Different religions were born because he sent thousands of prophets to the world, including Jesus. Islam is the truth, not religion. It tells 1+1=2. It covers everything in life: family, faith, politics, finance, laws, astronomy and sciences.
Hot: Good design
Not: Lazy design
Here’s a thought: If your brand starts with the letter M, try not using a loopy M in a circle for your logo. Matter socks and Minimore are two of the latest Thai brands who haven’t looked beyond the front cover of Monocle for their design inspiration, but the future of homegrown originality isn’t quite dead yet. The breakthrough furniture brands from this year’s Baan Lae Suan fair (see page 16) prove that there’s still life in thinking for yourself.
Hot: Taiwanese desserts
Not: French bakeries
So far, we’re yet to see any ham, lettuce and cheddar croissants in the windows of Paris’s boulangeries, nor mountainous slices of chocolate fudge cake wrapped in clear sheets of plastic. All this makes us think this city’s young business owners are a whole lot better at doing authentic Taiwanese desserts than they are French. For the latest pastel tofu jelly specialist you’re almost guaranteed not to get a seat at, see bit.ly/1LakvB1.
Muslims these days are brainwashed by secularism in the education system. It separates religion from daily life. Our education system raises sheep. It prevents people from thinking. When people think for themselves, they’re labeled black sheep. I won’t let my children go to school until they are seven. Just look at the best education systems like Finland. I believe that children’s brains should absorb different things in life before memorizing school programs. My parents [a doctor and a businesswoman] raised me to think, question and criticize. By the age of 17 I had a lot of things I wanted to speak out about. I thought music was the best way to spread my views. The more I played music, the more I suffered. It became a routine: write songs for five months, then go to the

studio, then go on tour where drunken people would come to watch us and fight. They never listened to my songs. I would sit alone in hotel rooms asking myself whether music was right for me. Should I do sound checks over and over for the next 20 years? God finally answered all my questions. I was never religious. My parents were secular. But when I started reading the Quran, it gave me all the answers I’d wanted in life. Music is a sin. It’s so powerful that it can change how people feel. It induces people to sway from God’s teachings, so I can’t play anymore. I love to eat beef and I wanted to sell it. God sent me a French-Muslim man who knew how to make dryaged beef, so we became business partners. I can’t do business without Sharia (Islamic law). He wanted to buy cheap supplies and sell at a high price but Sharia doesn’t allow that so I couldn’t work with him anymore. I lost millions in savings to my former dry-aged business. I saw it as dirty money which I got from duping people. I knew God had destined for me

to create a pure business, Company B, using money from my fellow Muslims. Islam’s image is tarnished by capitalism. People are afraid of Sharia’s fair-trade rules and rich people will lose their benefits. Campaigns against Islam are orchestrated by the world media owned by a few rich families backed by big companies who make more money. Armed Muslim groups like ISIS are against all Islamic teachings. But those who fight for their country like the Taliban have the right to protect their motherland. The violence in Thailand’s three Southern provinces is not a religious dispute for now. I have visited fellow Muslims there and I can surely say it’s not. Some groups try to paint it that way—mafia benefit from the situation. I like this junta government. I love rules. They’re predictable. The army is good at discipline. I’m not happy with their stance on Muslim migrants like the Rohingya and Uyghur. But I accept that there is more to foreign affairs than what we see. I’m waiting to be in heaven to meet God. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

18 new reasons to drink in Bangkok. by Vasachol Quadri 1. The local craft spirits scene is heating up There’s a whole host of new names on the local white-spirit scene trying their hand at Thailand-distilled new drinks. You’ve probably heard about the decade-old Chiang Mai-based Ma Jai Dum vodka brand by now, but there’s plenty more out there. Chalong Bay, Lamoon and Lamai are all white rums distilled from Lampun to Phuket. Head to Err (394/35 Maharaj Rd.), the Bo.Lan team’s new restaurant, to try some of these drinks mixed into local-leaning cocktails paired with easygoing Thai cuisine. Waan Noi mixes Maa Jai Dam banana spirit with shadegrown coffee and coffee liqueur (B250), while the LTBT (Lamai Takrai Bai Toey) features Lamai sugar cane spirit, lemongrass and pandan essence and lime (B220).
Craft Silom
4. New beer bars are all over town And talking about beer, there’s never been so many craft beer-specializing bars, with at least one in nearly every neighborhood. Craft has branched out from its now-permanent Sukhumvit Soi 23 pop-up to Silom (G/F, Holiday Inn Silom, 981 Silom Rd.), while the giant Brew Beers & Ciders (30 Sukhumvit Soi 11, 02-2555532.) has opened its third branch on Sukhumvit Soi 11. Beer delivery service Wishbeer has also opened a proper space near Ekkamai BTS (The Loft Ekkamai, Sukhumvit Rd., between soi 63 and 65, 02-392-1403). New player Hair of The Dog (2/F, Mahatun Plaza, 888/26 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-650-7589), meanwhile, offers an option for those in Phloen Chit, with 13 selected beers on tap that come from familiar importers like Smiling Mad Dog, Hopsession and Beervana. Make sure you catch their After Work Detox for buy-two-get-one-free from Mon-Thu 5-8pm. Ladies also get 50 percent off all night on Wednesdays.
2. New bars are embracing their Thai roots 5. Chiang Mai’s Mixology has Tapping into Thai culture, the recently opened Tep Bar (69-71, made its way to Bangkok Soi Nana, Charoenkrung Rd., 098-467-2944) has joined Studio Lam to specialize in home-infused ya dong (herb-infused Thai moonshine), whether straight (like Phra Apai Manee, Ratchasri Kamram or Khaiki, B200) or in cocktails (B280). The same bar also features a traditional orchestral band playing luk krung music daily. Unlike the molam sounds that have been popular in Bangkok bars for a while now, luk krung features instruments usually found at khon performances, like ra nad (xylophone), sor au (alto fiddle) and ja kae (similar to a lap guitar).
3. Homebrews are the new craft beer The list of locally brewed beers just keeps getting longer. From last year’s Udomsuk Brewing, Chit Beer, Sandport Brewing and Golden Coins, we’ve now got Pheebok Beer, Jo+ Beer Home Brew, Purr Beer, Triple Pearl and many more. And it’s not even that difficult to hunt down these brews anymore, thanks to events like Brewtopia at the new Silom art bar Whiteline (Silom Soi 8, 087-061-1117). Check out the bar’s event schedule at fb.com/whitelinebangkok.

Opened in late July, The Third Pig (Soi Phahon Yothin 20, 098965-4356. www.fb.com/The3rdPig) is a rustic bar and restaurant run by half of the team behind the well-renowned Mixology cocktail bar in Chiang Mai. The bar offers a similar food and drink concept but with a much wider menu, covering everything from spaghetti carbonara to Chinese-style pork knuckle and mussels in kang-som (spicy tamarind paste). To drink, there’s a huge list of signature cocktails like Brick House Cobbler (vodka, blackcurrant liqueur, chocolate liqueur, port wine, mixed berries, cranberry bitters and chocolate stick, B260) and Eden's Apple (Monkey Shoulder blended whiskey, peach schnapps, apple juice, cinnamon syrup, lime, egg white and aromatic bitters, B260).
6. Sunday Brunch with free-flow Mai Tai The Polynesian-themed restaurant Trader Vic’s (Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa, 257/1-3 Charoen Nakhon Rd., 02-4760022) has enlivened its Sunday brunch with free-flow Mai Tai cocktails (see page 22). The Mai Tai here is created by new resident mixologist Ron Ramirez, who bottle ages his drinks with ingredients like peppermint, wild berries and earl grey tea before serving.

7. Thailand’s best bartenders have been crowned Although our local bartenders didn’t make it to the regional round of Diageo World Class bartending competition this year, there were still four winners from the Thailand round: Ton Pongpak from Why 97 (Asiatique The Riverfront, 2194 Charoenkrung Soi 72-74, 081-797-4455), Ball Sarawut from Bamboo Bar (1/F, Mandarin Oriental, 48 Charoen Krung Soi 40, 02-659-9000), Thumb Natakorn from the now-defunct Perfume Fragrance Bar and Milk Pailin from Vesper (10/15 Convent Rd., Silom, 02-235-2777).
8. The new botanical cocktails menu at Vesper Not only has one of its bartenders been named among the best in town, but Vesper also has one of the most original drinks menus right now, focusing on botanically infused cocktails. Try a Doubting Thomas (B480)—a tea cocktail that blends lapsang souchong (a smoky black tea from Foujian province) with Ardberg (an even smokier Scotch whiskey), Aperol, sherry and bay leaf. A Thyme to Kill (B420) is also a great take on the classic negroni, mixing thyme-infused Cointreau with barrel-aged Tanqueray gin and La Quintinye extra dry vermouth. The Campari is served completely separately as jelly.
9. Bamboo Bar now serves the most expensive cocktail in town Another bar manned by one of the Diageo World Class winners has teamed up with French vodka label Grey Goose to create a luxury drink inspired by French nobility during the reign of King Louise XV. The result is called Grey Goose L’Aristocrate, which mixes Grey Goose vodka with Noilly Prat French vermouth and Dashfire bitters, served in a Moser limited-edition Lady Hamilton glass. At B1,200 per glass, it’s also served alongside a mille feuille.

These stem from everything from food producing to exhibition materials, energy consumption and transportation. To help encourage responsible event organizing, TCEB has created the Carbon Offsetting Activities Program, and released a new handbook called How to Organize Carbon Neutral Events. With this, organizers can gain an understanding of the overall

10. Restaurants and bars are now one and the same
13. Beach clubs have made their way to the city
16. Hitachino’s importer now also brings in spirits
Nearly all the most interesting recent openings have blurred the line between what’s considered a restaurant and a bar. Err (394/35 Maharaj Rd.) makes contemporary Thai tapas served alongside cocktails that are equally local and creative; Viva 21 (387 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 02-712-8184), the latest project from Viva & Aviv’s team, partnered with Eat Me’s Tim Butler for a menu of fusion small plates; and Marcel (Sathorn Soi 10, 02- 635-3533) serves modern and classic French food in a moody bar setting.
Flow House Bangkok (A Square, Sukhumvit Soi 26, 02-108-5210) has now partnered with Chang beer to turn its second floor into the California-beach-themed Chang Surf Bar. Meanwhile, the beach club vibe has even spread to Khaosan with the opening of the new Superflow City Beach Club (Khaosan Rd., 086-0880129). This spacious area has a thatched roof bar in the middle, around which is a sandy dance floor and seating area as well as a concrete zone for those who’d rather keep it clean.
Hitachino is imported by the family-run company Drink Wise Co., Ltd., who previously opened Barley Bistro & Bar in Silom before starting to import booze. Now, after focusing on Hitachino for a couple of years, they’re also bringing in Hanami gin from Japan, Bong vodka and Chocolate wine from Holland. Available at Gourmet Market at The Emporium, The Emquartier and Siam Paragon.
11. You can now get a seat at Junker & Bar
14. There are even more new art bars
This tiny burger and cocktail specialist has finally expanded to occupy the next-door shop-house to double its size with a slightly different theme. The second room mixes the American burger joint vibe with some classic Thai-Chinese influences. Overall, the mood tends towards a restaurant, while the original room is all about drinks and music. The menu goes with the theme by offering dim sum as well as burgers, along with daily steak specials. The new menu won’t be available till September. 454 Suan Phlu Soi 1, 085-100-3608.
The latest on Si Phraya Road is called U Baan, which serves craft beers like Triple Pearl, X Beer and Purr Beer alongside exhibitions like the recently opened Dream On (see BK Now page 38), while round the corner on Silom, Whiteline (Silom Soi 8, 087-061-1117) is an alternative, six-story space tucked among massage parlors. And if you’re more interested in the art than the drink, then there are several less party-focused new spaces as well, among them Schemata Gallery (1/F, Liberty Tower, Thonglor, 088-088-8066) and 56th Studio (9-11 Green Connect, Sukhumvit Soi 31), which tailors its drinks according to the theme of each exhibition.
12. Sathorn Soi 10-12 welcomes a new wave of bars This u-bend of stylish bars and restaurants near Chong Nonsi is finally living up to its reputation thanks to the arrival of three new French-leaning bars. Marcel (Sathorn Soi 10, 02- 635-3533) serves French cuisine into a casual atmosphere; Revolucion Cocktails (50 Sathorn Soi 10, 02-235-4823) is the Bangkok outpost of a Shanghai-born tapas and cocktail bar; and the latest arrival, which just opened in July, is Le Cafe des Stagiaires (142/21 Sathorn Soi 12. 081-207-3077), another bar hailing from Shanghai but with a younger, college vibe.
10
15. Coffee shops where you can get a drink The latest wave of coffee shops aren’t just serving single-origin slow drip; many of them have a good line of beers, too. Australian chain Jones the Grocer (G/F, The Emquartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-261-0382) has partnered with Copenhagen craft brewery Gypsy Inc., while the Dean & Deluca at Mahanakhon Cube (96 Narathiwas Rd., 092-804-5720) now does Japan’s Hitachino beer on tap. You’ll also find it by the bottle at the Emquartier branch.
17. New spirits are coming to town Bootleggers Trading is the latest importer in town, who are not only helping to distribute local spirit Lamoon Thai Rum, but also bringing in new whiskies from the US like 287 Single Malt Whiskey, Westchester Wheat Whiskey and Still House Bourbon Whiskey. You can try all these bottles at the likes of Quince, WTF, Tep Bar, Smokin’ Pug and Junker & Bar.
18. Japanese craft beer is as hot as its whiskey We wrote about how Japanese modern izakaya and single malt whiskies have invaded Bangkok nightlife over the past year. Now there’s even more Japanese beers on offer, courtesy of Beervana, which is bringing in the wallet-friendly Yo-Ho and Baird Beer brands. Yo-ho’s line consists of Yona Yona ale, Tokyo Black, Indo No Aooni and the cutesy cat-labeled Yo-ho Suiyoubi No Neko. Baird’s series includes Teikoku IPA, Suruga Bay Imperial IPA, Rising Sun pale ale, Angry Boy brown ale and the Numazu lager. Try Hanakaruta Sathorn (Sathorn Soi 10, 085-061-7318).

escapes TAIWAN
On Your Bike Known as one of the most bicycle-friendly destinations in the world, Taiwan’s eastern coast is full of scenic routes, suitable for both advanced cyclists and interested beginners. By Lily Kittisrikangwan Taitung Seaside Park
East Coastal Line
Kaohsiung With its own international airport and a growing cycling scene, this city in the southwest makes a great choice for beginners looking to try out an urban city route. There are many designated paths just for cyclists, plus fewer cars than bustling Taipei. There are also public bikes for rent at stands throughout the city under the City-Bike Program. See more at khh.travel/en/default1.asp.
CITY TOUR Difficulty: HHHHH We really like the Star of Cianjen Bike Bridge for its intricate design, built to accommodate cyclists. It’s also lined with two small pedestrian lanes on both sides for those who would rather walk and take in the scenery. The bridge connects to three different cycling routes: Formosa Boulevard Bike Path, West Side Harbor Line Bike Path and Cianjhen River Bike Path. It’s even more striking after dark, once it’s lit up against the night sky. Another surprising highlight is the city’s MRT station. Largely considered one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world, Formosa Boulevard Station is best known for its “Dome of Light,” a massive colored glass installation designed by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata. Near the station lies the Liohe Night Market, a well-known night market catering to tourists (which means local products, seafood and other goods are a bit on the pricey side). You can also cycle or take a stroll along the picturesque Ai River (Love River), which is peaceful during the day and colorful at night with neon lights reflecting in the water. For more information, check out the Tourism Bureau of Kaohsiung at tourism.kcg.gov.tw/en.
Taitung Cycling between cities is time-consuming, but well worth the effort. Along the East Coast, you’ll be greeted by deep blue ocean views and other cool sights.
Toroko National Park
with the mountains as backdrop. The best time to visit is just before the sun sets. A trip to Taitung would not be complete without a visit to Sanxiantai Island, located off the coast of Chenggong township. It’s known for its eightarch-footbridge, which offers a unique view of the pebble beach by the peaceful Pacific Ocean.
ALONG THE COAST Difficulty: HHHHH A cycle up north takes you to Shihyusan scenic area, with its impressive views of ocean-facing rocky outcrops and routes suitable for intermediate/advanced cyclists. Many cyclists stop at Hualien, a quaint foodie town, before continuing to Taroko National Park, famous for its natural marble gorge. It’s possible to cycle along the road shared with other vehicles throughout the park. The spectacular views of the mountains, valleys, the Shakahtang Ho and Leewoo rivers, and the suspension footbridge definitely make this challenging, hilly ride worth it.
Heaven Road
Taipei There’s plenty to keep you busy in the lively capital of Taiwan. The usual tourist stops include Chiang Kai-Shek memorial hall, Taipei 101, Sun Yat-Sen memorial hall and Shilin Night Market, the latter of which is one of the busiest spots in the city once night falls.
INNER CITY Difficulty: HHHHH Cycling around the city, though, is not advisable for beginners. Despite the growing number of cyclists, the traffic can be quite intimidating, especially if you’re not used to the layout of the city. Nevertheless, there are well-maintained public bikes available for hire throughout the city (for where to get them, see travel.taipei/en). There are separate bike lanes and official cycling routes through many parts of the city, and you’ll come face to face with interesting graffiti, too, especially around Ximenting.
SEASIDE PARK
RIVERSIDE RIDE
Difficulty: HHHHH Taitung Seaside Park is a great stop for cyclists, being the biggest public park by the sea, where you can easily cycle or walk down the nicely paved trails. It’s also connected to Taitung Forest Park, which takes you one step closer to nature. Both are located on flat land, making cycling through the trees a real breeze. Another iconic spot lies by the East Rift Valley in Taitung. Known as “Heaven Road,” the Chihshang Rice Field offers a scenic cycling route through green fields
Difficulty: HHHHH We would highly recommend a trip down the riverside bikeways in Taipei, where you’ll be completely shielded from the congestion outside the grounds. Roads inside are well maintained, and stretch over a distance of 40km. Riding all the way to Tamsui is popular among locals and tourists alike, as it’s an ideal stop for sunset-watching at the end of the day.

The Chiang Mai-based wooden furniture brand was founded back in 2007 by designer Suthi Payothonsiri, whose showroom has joined the Baan Tawai handcraft village. The brand actually started off making carved-teak furniture before turning to industrial design. It uses old wood, scrap wood and tree stumps mixed with steel and leather details to create rugged and manly pieces like the low coffee table (B18,000), New York Sofa (B20,000) and chest of drawers (B15,000).
Debuted at TIFF earlier in March, this brand specializes in minimal wooden and cushion furniture with Scandinavian touches. Despite being labeled as new, the brand is actually a collaboration between the decade-old ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) furniture exporters, and the young Dots Design Studio, which takes care of the creative side. The result is the Macaron collection (ashwood with green and red cushion, B3,300/stool, B4,200/bar-stool and B7,400/bench), which was quickly featured in Wallpaper* magazine, and the Whipcream Sofa (oakwood with duck feather cushion, B16,900 for one seat and B28,900 for two seats), which won the DITP’s Design Excellence Award 2015.

Egg White Design Studio Founded in January 2014 by designers Kittima “Joy” Chatchaleomwit and Sirinut “Pop” Keetanitinun, who both graduated from Chanapattana International Design Institute. Pop comes from a family of carpenters, and the studio extends its reach into both the wholesale market for high-end wooden furniture as well as the more design-savvy market for minimal-yet-functional pieces. The para-wood furniture ranges from the Matchbox working desk (B9,300) and Perd cabinet (B6,200) to smaller pieces like the Curve wall decor (B120/piece) and Eggstand (B150). M/O/M and Thxful for Small Mercies Inthanu Faromkao is a designer and furniture maker who’s worked in Thailand’s home decor scene for almost a decade. This year, he finally put his own brand together, M/O/M, for which he partnered up with his two friends, Piti Kuptawatin and Adiwis Wittaya, to specialize in basic home furniture that can be used both outdoors and indoors. Their designs pretty much stick to the Scandinavian style, but also use a lot of bowed techniques both with steel, like the Ging Kaew chair (bowed steel topped with woven faux rattan, B4,500) and wood like the R&R stool (B3,800). Inthanu, alone, also introduced a second brand at the Baan Lae Suan Fair called Thxful for Small Mercies. This one specializes in home decoration, featuring unique designs that blend Thai wood carving and weaving techniques. Highlights include the beechwood-carved pendant light (B1,650, there’s also an option for walnut wood at the same price), woven tray (B1,150 for beechwood to B1,550 for walnut) and wooden box carved with a lotus pattern (B650-2,150). Timmer Furniture Run by the giant furniture importer Champaca Wood, which also collaborates with Studio 248 designers Purim Kraiya and Sukalaphan Suwansomboon, Timmer is a new brand specializing in small and medium-sized home decor made from oak, maple and teak. The design sticks to a minimal-yet-functional style, while the bright shade of wood makes for a clean look that’s easy to mix with any room. Cyclists should check out the Shift side table; a trolley-like low table that allows you to park your bike at one end (Price TBA). Capsule (Price TBA) is a wall decor piece with storage room for books and hangers, while the Robin Hook (Price TBA) is a single hanger that allows you to be creative with how you position it on the wall.

OPEN DOOR
Cafe Parisien Classic French fare from the chef behind Le Beaulieu—without the lofty price tags. The buzz: This casual French restaurant is one of five outlets inside the new Glasshouse restaurant complex on Wireless Road. The menu has been put together in consultation with Bangkok’s favorite French chef, Herve Frerard (formerly of Le Beaulieu, #12 in Top Tables 2015). The decor: As the building’s name suggests, the restaurant’s dining room sees plenty of natural light stream in during the day. While the place is actually quite small, the light tones of mint green and white add to the open, spacious feel. The small mezzanine is home to a chef’s table. The food and drinks: Though the restaurant is not aimed at being fine-dining, the food is still refined. Expect traditional French flavors

in dishes like bouillabaisse fish soup with rouille sauce (B420), slowcooked coq au vin with potato gratin (B590) and sauteed frog legs, garlic butter with lemon and parsley (B650). The compact menu also includes chef signatures like USA scallops served with celeriac puree and nantua sauce (B590) and classic bistro fare such as the beef tartare with homemade French fries (B850). Sweets are just as classic, including apple tart with vanilla ice cream (B220) and flambeed crepes Suzette with Grand Marnier liquor (B260). If you’re looking for something extra special, book a chef’s table one week in advance and you’ll get chef Frerard cooking up a special one-ofa-kind menu. Naturally, the restaurant also has a very Gallic wine list focusing on Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire, Alsace and the Rhone Valley. House wine starts at B250 by the glass.
Why you should care: Still grieving the closure of Le Beaulieu? This spot does similarly traditional French food at more reasonable prices and in a more casual setting. The three-course set lunch at B690 is a real winner, too. Glasshouse at Sindhorn, 130-132 Wireless Rd., 02-650-9993. Open daily 11:30am-2pm, 6-10pm

Misokatsu Yabaton HHHH Japanese. J Avenue, Thonglor Soi 15, 061-4497783. Open daily 11:30am-10pm. No outside drinks allowed
Misokatsu Yabaton is another venerable Japanese franchise (founded 1947) that has spawned a branch in Bangkok. Its hometown, Nagoya, is famous for misokatsu, a pork cutlet drenched in thick miso sauce. Even back home, Yabaton’s is a classic. Tucked down a soi, the Bangkok venue’s barebones decor and lack of options beyond its star dish make it a very niche destination, though. You’re really meant to order a katsu, but they do have similarly breaded shrimp, croquettes and even asparagus. Of the half-dozen katsu options, the classics would have to be the teppan misokatsu (pork loin cutlet served on a hot plate, B400 for a la carte or B480 for a set with refillable rice, sliced cabbage, pickled turnip and soup) and the waraji misokatsu, explained on the menu as jumbo pork loin cutlet, and served on a normal plate (B390 or B470 with the set). Though they are both made

As its name implies, Jasmin Hong Kong Restaurant boasts that its expertise lies in Chinese-Hong Kong-style dishes. Though hidden on the fourth floor of Time Square Building in Asoke, it’s no secret to Chinese food-loving businessmen, who pack the dining room at lunch hour, and Thai-Chinese families in the evening. Nearly everything in the modestly-sized room is mismatched, from the contemporary chandeliers to the classic red curtains and graphic-print wallpaper. But you don’t need to worry about that, because the food is so consistently

from the same cut of pork, the teppan cutlet served atop a bed of sliced cabbage on a sizzling hot plate is thicker, with a superior texture, not to mention a pleasantly smoky aroma from the burnt miso sauce poured onto the pan upon serving. The waraji version is good, too. The breaded pork is nicely deep-fried, resulting in a crispy and non-greasy crust. You can choose to have it with classic Worcestershire sauce, which is very tasty, or go half-half with the miso sauce, which is a bit too sweet for our taste. Either way, the trimmings are spot on. Japanese mustard, chili powder and chopped roasted peanuts are provided on the table and the refillable tonjiru soup, made with cabbage and carrot slices, is more flavorful than the miso soup you’re served at most places. Like other tonkatsu restaurants, Misokatsu Yabaton also serves a curry option (B295), which is creamy and mellow but rather too mild for us. We’d also avoid the yakibuta (B180), rolled pork-belly with a chashulike look: very fat, not tender, tasting of little else other than soy sauce. Finally, the only dessert available is mango pudding (B85); eggy and buttery topped with concentrated syrup-like mango sauce, it’s not exactly a refreshing postk a t s u p a l a t e c l e a n s e r. I f y o u ’ r e maintaining a bucket list of regional Japanese specialties, Yabaton does make a great katsu—particularly the teppan option. Whether you actually like the sweet, dense miso sauce accompaniment is a question of taste.
perfect—and priced pretty much like any other Chinese restaurant. We simply love the Hong Hao hors d’oeuvres (six Chinese cold cuts, B500-850), which, from the five-spice pig’s ear and barbecue pork to the sesame-marinated jellyfish, are packed with flavor. The skin to the roasted Peking duck (B970) is trimmed from the meat perfectly, without a trace of fat, while the sweet dipping sauce is just right. The duck meat itself can be ordered in six different ways—we recommend having it stir-fried in sweet and sour sauce. Other standout dishes include the dry, aromatic and pleasinglyburned-tasting stir-fried fish maw (B320, B480, B650) and the salted egg yolk and barbecue meat-packed four-seasons fried rice in lotus leaf (B390-530). The fried goby fish in soy sauce (market price; on our last visit B840) is also divine. The highlights carry on to dessert, with a bua loy hima (B90) that features super-soft flour sheets stuffed with sweet black sesame in a piquant ginger soup, and pae guay puek bod (mashed taro with coconut milk and gingko nuts, B80) that proves simplicity is best. If you’re after a convenient, no-frills space to enjoy Chinese delicacies at a decent price, we can think of very few places better in Bangkok.

last word
brought to you by
FREEWILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): English author Barbara Cartland published her first novel at age 21. By the time she died 77 years later, she had written more than 700 other books. Some sources say she sold 750 million copies, while others estimate two billion. In 1983 alone, she churned out 23 novels. I foresee a Barbara Cartland-type period for you in the coming months, Leo. Between now and your birthday in 2016, I expect you to be as fruitful in your own field as you have ever been. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): ‘’On or about December 1910, human character changed,’’ wrote English author Virginia Woolf in 1924. What prompted her to draw that conclusion? The rapidly increasing availability of electricity, cars and indoor plumbing? The rise of the women’s suffrage movement? Labor unrest and the death of the King? The answer might be all of the above, plus the beginning of a breakdown in the British class system. During the last 19 weeks of 2015, the destiny of the Virgo tribe will undergo a fundamental shift. Ten years from now, I bet you will look back at this time and say, “That was when everything got realigned, redeemed and renewed.” LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): “The greatest and most important problems of life are all in a certain sense insoluble,” said psychologist Carl Jung. “They can never be solved, but only outgrown.” I subscribe to that model, and I hope you will consider it, too—especially in light of the fact that from now until July 2016 you will have more power than ever to outgrow two of your biggest problems. I don’t guarantee that you will transcend them completely, but I’m confident you can render them at least 60 percent less pressing. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): Hundreds of years ago, Hawaiians celebrated an annual holiday called Makahiki. It began in early November and lasted four months. No one worked very much for the duration. There were nonstop feasts and games and religious ceremonies. Community-building was a featured theme, and one taboo was strictly enforced: no war or bloodshed. I encourage you to enjoy a similar break from your daily fuss. Now is an especially propitious time to ban conflict, revenge and sabotage as you cultivate solidarity. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Museum of Failed Products is a warehouse full of consumer goods that companies created but no one wanted to buy. It includes caffeinated beer, fortune cookies for dogs, and breath mints that resemble vials of crack cocaine. The most frequent visitors to the museum are executives seeking to educate themselves about what errors to avoid. I encourage you to be inspired by this place. Take an inventory of the wrong turns you’ve made in the past. Use what you learn to create a revised master plan. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” Virtually all of us have been guilty of embodying that well-worn adage. And according to the astrological omens, quite a few of you Capricorns are currently embroiled in it. But I am happy to report that the coming weeks will be a favorable time to quit your insanity cold turkey. Here’s a good way to begin: Undo your perverse attraction to the stressful provocation that has such a seductive hold on your imagination.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): “Everything I’ve ever let go of has claw marks on it,” confessed the late, great author David Foster Wallace. Does that describe your experience, too? If so, events in the coming months will help you break the pattern. More than at any other time in the last ten years, you will have the power to liberate yourself through surrender. You will understand how to release yourself from overwrought attachment through love and grace. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): “Most people love in order to lose themselves,” wrote Hermann Hesse in his novel Demian. But there are a few, he implied, who actually find themselves through love. In the coming months, Pisces, you are more likely to be one of those rare ones. You won’t allow love to sap your power or make you forget who you are. That’s good news, right? Here’s the caveat: You must be ready and willing to discover much more about the true nature of your deepest desires.
Bangkok’s casual dining guide To everyone’s favorite restaurants. Best Pizza, Best Mexican, Best Burgers, Best Yakiniku and much more.
ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’d probably prefer to stay in the romantic, carefree state of mind. But from what I can tell, you’re ripe for a new phase of your longterm cycle. Your freestyle rambles should now make way for careful introspection and thoughtful adjustments. Despite how it may initially appear, it’s not a comedown. I see it as an unusual reward that will satisfy you in unexpected ways. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): In accordance with the current astrological omens, I recommend the following activities: Sing a love song at least once a day. Seek a message from an ancestor in a reverie or dream. Revisit your three favorite childhood memories. Swim naked in a river, stream or lake. Change something about your home to make it more sacred and mysterious. Obtain a symbolic object or work of art that stimulates your courage to be true to yourself. Find relaxation and renewal in the deep darkness.

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): The ancient Greek epic poem the Iliad is one of the foundation works of Western literature. Written in the eighth century BCE, it tells the story of the ten-year-long Trojan War. The cause of the conflict was the kidnap of Helen of Troy, reputed to be the world’s most beautiful woman. And yet nowhere in the Iliad is there a description of Helen’s beauty. Don’t be like the Iliad in the coming weeks, Gemini. Know everything you can about the goal at the center of your life.
