On October 13, 2016, Thailand’s revered monarch, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, passed away at Siriraj Hospital at the age of 88. The depth of sorrow felt not just in Thailand but around the world is immense. Thanks to His Majesty’s relentless efforts to improve the livelihoods and security of his people, his 70-year reign was marked by an unprecedented period of prosperity. He was a unifying figure for the Kingdom and will be remembered for his tireless work upcountry, either researching new ways to increase agricultural productivity or cultivate alternative crops to better the lives of farmers. As a lifestyle publication, at BK Magazine we feel a connection to His Majesty as a renaissance man, one with extraordinary gifts for music, painting, poetry, sports and photography. Sometimes his artistic passions would intertwine, such as in the self-portrait His Majesty shot with a fisheye lens of himself playing the trumpet. How could we not instantly connect with the creativity of this pre-selfie selfie? There’s also an extraordinary shot of His Majesty playing the trumpet on a canoe, accompanied by an accordion and a clarinet. As we mourn his passing, we are further encouraged to support Thailand’s creative and artistic community to the best of our ability: the musicians, the dancers, the painters, the photographers, the film directors, the inventors, the designers and the chefs. Thailand will never forget His Majesty King Bhumibol’s creative genius and his tireless dedication to making the Kingdom a happier, more prosperous place. His legacy will be cherished forever.

ATTRACTION

Snakes and Ladders Ophidiophobia sufferers will want to steer clear of Siam Serpentarium, Bangkok’s newest edutainment space dedicated entirely to snakes. Located a little out of the city center in the Lad Krabang area, the space comprises three main attractions: an interactive exhibition about snakes and their life cycle; Snake Planet, a display of over 50 species of real snakes including some rare kinds; and Naka Theatre, which offers live performances featuring snake handlers. It may take you some time to spot the snakes as they are good at hiding—just keep in mind that photography and knocking on the glass are not permitted. Prices are set at B350 for Thai nationals and foreigners with a work permit, and B550 for tourists. 969 Luang Phang Rd., 02-326-5800. Open daily 9am-5:30pm. www.siamserpentarium.com

Bounce Thailand has added a new adventure zone to its Ratchada trampoline park. X-Park is inspired by Ninja Warrior, the internationally-known obstacle-course game show, and incorporates elements of free-running. Be prepared to have your strength, speed, endurance and agility put to the test across 15 progressively harder sections. Choose from standalone challenges like Parkour, Spider Climb, Rollers and Zipline, and Trapeze or tackle the fitness-intensive full circuit. Entry starts at B450 for general access. 5/F, The Street Ratchada, New Ratchadapisek Rd., 02-014-2446. Open daily 10am-10pm. MRT Thailand Cultural Centre. www.bounceinc.co.th

American cosmetics brand Bobbi Brown is rolling out dazzling new products for its fall/winter collection. Get that dewy look minus the oily skin with the Extra Repair Nourishing Milk (B3,650). It’s light enough that you can put other skincare and makeup products over the top and still look natural. Another can’t-miss is the new Long-Wearing Liquid Line (B1,400), which comprises high-intensity liquid eyeliner with shimmer in five colors (our picks: “Forest Sparkle” and “Baltic Blue”). The chrome finish helps the liner last up to 12 hours without turning flaky—so you can have sparkly eyes without the heavy eyelids. Available at Bobbi Brown retailers nationwide.

Bangkok’s latest indoor laser tag venue, Siam Laser Games, can be found in the basement of Novotel Bangkok in Siam Square. At an impressive 1,300 sq meters, the center offers two different courses: Lava-Castle and Ocean-Forest. If you are going in a big group, the two courses can be connected to create one huge venue for up to 56 people. Gather your troops and join an epic battle for B250/person/game until the end of October. After that, the student price is B300/person for the first game (B500/person/2 games) and adult price B350/ person/game (B600/person/2 games). B/F, Novotel Bangkok, Siam Square Soi 6, 02-209-8888. ADVERTORIAL

RATCHADA THE BEST CONNECTED DISTRICT IN BANGKOK

THE CITY’S NEW HUB OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS TO ALL FOUR CORNERS OF BANGKOK. CLOSE YET FREE Getting around Bangkok during rush hour is not always easy. But the Ratchada neighborhood offers a refreshing change from Sukhumvit, despite being only minutes away from Asoke, where the Sukhumvit line of the BTS intersects with the MRT Blue Line. Here, traffic is noticeably smoother and the Srirat Expressway offers direct access to Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

THE NEW CBD Ratchada Road itself exemplifies how wide and open the area is. The eight-lane avenue is a far-cry from the winding, narrow sois of older neighborhoods. In fact, Ratchada’s transportation options are so plentiful and so efficient, it has eclipsed traditional centers of business like Sathorn and Asoke, emerging as the city’s new central business district. The reason the Stock Exchange of Thailand, alongside major regional headquarters like Unilever and AIA, has chosen Ratchada is because of its unparalleled transportation options, allowing employees to zip to work in the morning, quickly pop out for a meeting, and be home early.

RAIL EXPRESS The MRT Blue Line runs right under Ratchada, with five stations dotting its length between Asoke (to the South) and Lad Prao (to the North). It seamlessly connects with the Sukhumvit Line at MRT Sukhumvit and the Silom line at MRT Silom. At the MRT Phetburi, the Airport Rail Link (ARL) allows travelers to reach Suvarnabhumi International Airport in 30 minutes

regardless of traffic. In fact, the ARL Makkasan station even offers early check-in counters to send your luggage to the airport early.

A BRIGHT FUTURE The future is equally exciting. In 2020, the MRT Orange Line will run from MRT Thailand Cultural Centre, through ARL Makkasan, and to the BTS Sukhumvit line’s Ratchatewi station, a single stop away from Siam (and the BTS Silom Line). Investors have taken note and Ratchada’s value as a solid property investment keeps on growing. Returns are much greater for developments near BTS and MRT stations, and growth shows no sign of slowing down due the limited number of available properties in those highly desirable areas. Noble is one of the developers that has been instrumental in shaping the neighborhood in its new image. Its skyscrapers’ edgy decor is the perfect fit for the neighborhood’s fresh-faced crowd. With its second development, Noble Ratchada 2, the

developer has proven its commitment to the area as one of the most high-potential neighborhoods in Bangkok right now. The 42-story building boasts all the modern amenities including a particularly large saltwater swimming pool and roof gardens on the 6th and 42d floors. Located right by MRT Thailand Cultural Centre. Fully furnished units start from B3.9 million. MRT THAILAND CULTURAL CENTRE IS: • On the MRT Blue Line (18 stations from MRT Hua Lamphong to MRT Bang Sue) • On the MRT Orange Line (opening 2020)

• 2 stops to the Airport Rail Link (ARL Makkasan)

• 3 stops to the BTS Sukhumvit Line (change at MRT Silom to BTS Asoke) • Direct to BTS Silom Line (change at MRT Silom)

• Direct to BTS Sukhumvit Line terminal station at MRT Mo Chit

The Trapeze Swingers Store

MACHINE AGE WORKSHOP

The only place in Bangkok doing American industrial age statement pieces. This old favorite hides down a small alley that connects Phra Athit and Ram Butri roads. Inside you’ll find a treasure trove of both men’s and women’s pieces, from lace dresses (prices usually sit around B2,000-B3,000) to graphic tees (starting at B400) and all kinds of shoes. Not into fashion? Also drop by to check out the collections of old books, cassettes and vinyl—best browsed with a beer in hand, which you can also buy on-site.

Unlike other ragged-looking vintage stores, this It shop hooks its customers up with heaps of in-vogue items. Feminine, long dresses that look like they are from a Jane Austen novel sit alongside other cool designs with a hint more modernism. The thrift shop vibe is strong, but these items are of high quality, meaning prices can also be steep (B4,280 for a maxi dress). Alongside the lacey and glittery womenswear, you’ll also find some pieces for guys.

Run by celebrity and vintage collector Nita Tejapaibul, the store focuses mainly on elegant luxury nightwear. Nita says that every item is one of a kind, mostly sourced from the UK, France and Italy, while they also offer a tailoring service to ensure the perfect fit. Expect lots of handcrafted details like sequins, embroidery and lace. And it’s not just women’s jackets and gowns; guys will find some nice shirts and blazers too.

I go for outfits from the 1940s-60s, because the cut of the waist is higher. I find that, for my body shape, modern-day clothes with low waistlines are not very flattering. Higher-cut clothes make your waist look smaller and your legs longer.

Right now I like military-style clothes, like U.S. Army pants and World War II-era jackets, as well as denim pants from the ‘50s. Military-style clothes use a unique type of herringbone fabric, and I really like that they have big pockets that can hold a lot of things.

For me a scarf and a hat, or some flower for hair-styling. I really love pearl necklaces, too. I like colors, kept within a classic look.

Traveling to Myanmar has never been cheaper—and nor have there ever been so many luxurious places to stay. The latest, Sanctum Inle Resort (sanctum-inle-resort.com), sits on a quiet little nook of Inle Lake, half above water on stilts and half on dry land. The 94 rooms (going up to 150 sq meters for the Sanctuary Suite) balance colonial elegance with a modern edge, while an Olympic-sized saltwater swimming pool brings a touch of glamour to the tucked-away location (the best way to get there is by boat). The Refectory restaurant provides guests with authentic Shan cuisine, while Cloister Bar boasts a selection of Myanmar-brewed beers and Cuban and Dominican cigars. Room rates usually start from US$284 (B10,080), but they’re right now offering two nights in a Cloister Deluxe room for US$372 (B13,203), inclusive of one-way airport transfer from Heho Airport plus a half-day tour for two to Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda.

Book a stay at the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo (www.mandarinoriental.com/tokyo) any time before Oct 2017 and you could leave Japan with a wearable piece of artwork—if you’ve got a spare B1.2 million lying around. The Premium Kimono Stay package gets you two nights at the hotel plus a made-to-order kimono created by Chiso, the legendary kimono shop dating back to 1555. It’s hard to dig out retail prices for these highly treasured, indigo-dyed garments, but the NY Times put the price at anything from ¥380,000-10 million (B137,618-3.63 million) back in 2013. We recommend booking your stay after Oct 23, when the hotel will also be hosting its own Kimono Week (ends Nov 15). Other perks of this decadent package include a personal photo album of your trip and two dinners.

RESTAURANT

Our House It’s not all about the charming wood-dominated house and its relaxing outdoor terrace (complete with petanque court) at La Casa Nostra. Tucked in Sathorn Soi 1, the place joins two strong forces from the food and wine world: Italian chef Alessandro Frau (of Acqua in Phuket) and boutique wine importer Global Vineyards. Instead of going down the same modern Italian route as Acqua, chef Frau offers something simpler here, yet with quality ingredients and high attention to details, like the fried Sicilian red prawn (B350) and fish fingers (B180) made from whole deboned sillago fish. Head chef Nino Scognamillo takes care of the kitchen, also rolling out various pastas, risottos and mains like veal Milanese (breaded veal cutlet, B950) and roast cod fish on Italian clam stew (B790). Be sure not to miss the fresh ricotta cheese and spinach gnocchi (B580) inspired by Frau’s grandma. The wine cellar stocks more than 200 labels of Italian and French wine, including some small-batch bottles, all priced very reasonably from B1,100. They also sell some upscale wines by the glass on a rotating basis, using a tool that lets them serve wines without popping the cork to preserve quality. Matcha starts from B120, while he also serves the scrumptious koicha cream (milk ice cream in a well of thick matcha, B285) along with other tea desserts. Sit at the bar and talk with the tea master, or take up a seat on the floor at one of the peaceful, low tables. Sukhumvit Soi 49, 097-267-2626. Open Mon-Fri 7am-9pm; Sat-Sun 10am-9pm

For almost a year, Thonglor's Rabbit Hole has staked a claim as one of the city's most exciting cocktail bars. There's been something missing, though: food. But that's all changed thanks to Texas-hailing chef Riley Sanders, who’s created small plates that are big on flavors and complexity. His uni toast (B300), for example, combines a crispy crust with creamy filling and uni on top. The refreshing yellowtail crudo (B450), too, comes with colorful sauces made from butterfly pea, roselle and cilantro. Chef Sanders will also helm the kitchen at Canvas, a fine-dining restaurant by the same owners as Rabbit Hole that's set to open by the end of the year. 125 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 081-822-3392, 098969-1335. French for “house of the truffle,” Maison de la Truffe in Paris has over 80 years of history behind it and a menu that revolves around one highly-priced ingredient: truffle. Step inside the Bangkok restaurant and you’ll see a shop showcasing truffle products, from truffle paste and truffle-infused olive oil to truffle slicers and chocolate truffles. As for the restaurant, you can watch kitchen staff in action through a large window while they cook Western classics like pumpkin soup (B200), truffle omelet (B720), truffle risotto (B950), pan-fried sea bass (B650) and veal fillet mignon (B3,200). Bangkok is the first location outside of France for the brand, and French chef Monara Pres has created some unique dishes just for us, including a truffled panna cotta with mango sticky rice (B370). 129 Thonglor Soi 9, 02-054-5422. BREAKFAST

Simply Smashing Seven great spots for avocado on toast in Bangkok. By Tessa Domzalski

Honey This very simple avocado and guacamole toast (B250) shows just how delicious this straightforward dish can be. The fresh avocado is served two-ways and topped with salt and pepper. That’s it, avocado toast with no frills. 2/F, Seen Space, Thonglor Soi 13, 02-185-2826

Tribeca The contemporary American restaurant has elevated its light brunch dish with rustic flavors while maintaining the simplicity that makes avocado toast such a trending treat globally. The thin sliced bread is smeared with mashed and sliced avocado, and topped with roughly chopped walnuts and goat cheese, ensuring each bite is a textured sensation. Yours for B260. Nihonmura Mall, Thonglor Soi 13, 02-712-9209

White Shuffle Even at only B250, this is one of the more elaborate dishes on this list. White Shuffle’s combination of ricotta, walnuts, beets and tomato all complement the rich and flavorful avocado, and popping the yolk of the added poached egg takes the dish to whole other level. 1/F, Central Festival Eastville, Praditmanoontham Rd., 02-553-6177

Luka This newly launched open-face sandwich (B240) features creamy smashed avocado with kale pesto on a charcoal-toasted ciabatta topped with parmesan and an organic sunny-side-up egg. Housemade pickles add a little extra zing, while the dish also comes with tapioca crisps and side-salad with light vinaigrette dressing.

Roast

Brekkie Sitting on a dab of balsamic sauce, a slice of whole-wheat toast is topped with smashed avocado, smoked salmon, poached egg and sprinkled with sesame. Here, you get the real taste of healthy food—less-seasoned ingredients with just a touch of saltiness from the smoked salmon, richness from the avocado and grainy wholewheat bread. Delicious at B240. 6/9 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 083-656-6141

Toby’s This brunch spot’s most popular dish is undoubtedly their smashed avocado toast (B290) on sourdough bread. (Though sweet tooths may go straight for the decadent French toast.) The dish is served with cherry tomatoes, chorizo, a poached egg and spinach but you can always add something extra (starting at B40) if you feel the need.

Roast This chic cafe has long been known for its brunchy bites, so it’s no surprise that they’ve made it onto this list with the smashed avocado toast (B420). The perfectly mashed avocado sits on a thick cut of country rye bread and is joined by roasted tomatoes and a salad. On top of all that is feta, sunflower seeds and a balsamic vinaigrette. The flavor combination is perfect. The Commons, 335 Thonglor Soi 17, 02-185-2865

Founded in 1926, Belgium’s Godiva is one of the world’s most iconic chocolate brands. Now it’s opening a store, or two, in Bangkok. An official Facebook post by Godiva Thailand says an outlet will open in CentralWorld, while a billboard spotted at Siam Paragon also claims a December opening. Godiva’s stores, which can already be found in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia, sell not only boxed chocolates but also incredibly rich soft-serve ice creams. www.fb.com/GodivaThailand

Spain’s Llaollao (G/F, Platinum Fashion Mall, 222 Phetchaburi Rd.) is the latest much-hyped frozen yogurt specialist to land in Bangkok. Known for its photogenic froyo (from B50) made with low-fat skimmed milk, the brand caused lengthy waits upon opening in Singapore a couple years back. Llaollao’s star is the “Sanum” sundae (B145), which comes with your choice of three fruits, two crunchy toppings and one sauce. There are also floats and smoothies at B120.

Hot on the heels of Hokkaido’s Bake, there’s a new Japanese cheese tart condender coming to town. Introducing Osaka’s Pablo. Since launching around two years ago, this creamy pudding-like tart in the trademark crispy shell has been lauded as one of its hometown’s must-try treats, causing some pretty lengthy queues. We can also expect a few specially flavored cheese tarts, like matcha, when the store opens at Siam Paragon on Oct 27. www.fb.com/PABLOCheesetartThailand

Fashion food and booze with prime rooftop views.

The buzz: Bangkok’s latest prime rooftop spot for dining and drinking sits 26 floors above the Chao Phraya at the new Avani hotel. The decor: The bar-restaurant shares the top floor with a swimming pool, both of which maximize the river view and city scape. A big, well-stocked bar stands up front among outdoor tables, offering booze to both swimmers and diners. The open-plan kitchen to the right of the bar also offers a few counter seats. As for the dining room, it’s all flashy lighting and decor that sits between hotel fine-dining and a fun casual place. Those who just want a drink should grab one of the daybeds primed for river views. The food: It's all very sharing- and booze-friendly, which translates to artfully presented tapas plates with the odd nod to Asian

flavors. Lamb shoulder arrives in the form of lollipops (B340) and smoked duck lacquered in fish sauce with a tea-flavored gel (B220). For something less trying, look out for the premium produce from both land and sea, like tsarskaya oysters (B140/piece), beluga caviar (B18,000) served with crunchy clay potato, and Australian wagyu tomahawk (B4,950). Desserts go down a sculptural route. The “Xtra Virgin” (B260) sees a green apple made from blown apple syrup filled with apple mousse and served with apple sorbet and spiced apple on dehydrated-apple hay. The drinks: French mixologist Alexandre Hersent rolls out refreshing signature cocktails like the Bora Bora Paradise Island (Absolut pear vodka, curacao, Joseph Cartron banana liqueur, apple juice and

coconut ice cream, B380) and Moulin Rouge (Absolut raspberry, passion fruit juice, a touch of grenadine and prosecco (B380). If you’re more into wine, sommelier Cherdchai Tomkaew can help you to pick a good bottle from the list of almost 100, ranging from B1,15063,460. Wine by the glass starts from B360. Why you should care: The stunning view alone is worth the visit. Add in a nice vibe and some not-half-bad food and drink, and you’ve got a cool-season must-visit. Ciao Pizza

NEW AND NOTED

Hello There Water Library’s ever-expanding and diversifying empire branches into pizza with the launch of an Italian restaurant in Silom. Ciao Pizza (Silom Soi 3, 094-754-7777) cooks its thincrust pizzas in a hybrid wood-fire oven, meaning you get both a smoky flavor and consistent cooking. Chef Gerardo Calabrese’s twice-risen pizza dough comes light and crispy, with toppings like margherita (from B140), four cheese (from B250), seafood (B370) and even nutella (B200). Also not-to-be-missed is the focaccia stuffed with truffle paste and cheese (B280), while the menu also spans burrata with cold cuts (B440), strozzapreti pasta with pesto (B260) and truffle ravioli (B350).

Freezer Friends The corner of Sukhumvit Soi 53 and Thonglor Soi 9 has transformed into the house of froyo specialists Frozer & Friends (G/F, 9:53 Art Mall, 124 Thonglor Soi 9, 02-662-5773). The compact white cafe imports its yogurt from New Zealand and

churns it into both natural and Hokkaido melon-flavored frozen yogurt (starting from B89 a small cup). They also offer a selection of combos named after songs and quotes, including “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” featuring sake jelly, and “Let the Chips Fall Where They May,” which comes with an espresso shot (both B189). You can find coffees and cakes here too.

Home of the Brave Run by one of the best coffee roasters in Bangkok, Brave Roasters at Siam Discovery carries on from the success of its sister I+D Style Cafe x Brave Roasters (formerly at Siam Center) to serve specialty coffee alongside easy eats and stunning views over Siam. Coffee starts from B100 while Brave’s signature syrup drinks like Gingerbread Latte are priced at B140. House-blended beans also shine in the latte soft-serve (B110), which you can get with a swirl of vanilla or make an affogato (topped with an espresso shot, B140). The food menu highlights sandwiches and pasta (from B180). Natcha Sanguankiattichai

Mexican head chef Carlos Bravo presents classic Mexican specialties including freshly smashed guacamole, refreshing tuna and sea bass ceviche, fajitas (grilled meat) and tacos. We especially like the thick, six-hour-braised Angus beef rib, which come smothered with pumpkin-seedy, flavorful green mole sauce. Another highlight is the new lamb chop with chocolate mole dish. The bar features a wide selection of tequila with a focus on classic Mexican cocktails. Dinner gets more fun with music from lively Latin band. picks, with meaty dishes proving the highlight. The Sab Bar grilled chicken (B255) spotlights three marinades— turmeric, lemongrass and a subtle “secret” sauce that basically makes the chicken taste like really good gai yang, with meat so tender that our plate didn’t last long. Similarly addictive are the moo grob grib (deep-fried pork with roasted rice powder, B130) and nam tok kha moo tod (deep-fried German pork knuckle with spicy salad, B450), both of which are crispy on the outside but oh-so-tender inside. We especially love the tamarind-heavy jaew dipping sauce. The signature somtam (B150) is sweet-but-not-too-sweet, saved by a zesty hit of lime, the extra crunch of corn, and the freshness of water mimosa. Less well-balanced are the mee ka ched (stir-fried rice noodles, B140) and nachos laab ped kluk klik (spicy duck larb with nachos, B175), though the latter is still worth your time. The tom sab pork ribs and tendons (B210) are a return to spicy form. Sports fans might be disappointed that Sab Bar is not a particularly raucous place to catch the big game (on our visits, most tables have been more interested in the food than the EPL matches), but this bar-slash-restaurant compares favorably to other air-con Isaan establishments in the neighbourhood. More successfully than, say, Thonglor Soi 11’s Tum Thonglor, it combines a fun atmosphere with food that nearly always hits the spot.

The poor Maze. Opening its doors at almost exactly the same time as The Commons and 72 Courtyard, this food-focused Thonglor community mall of the old-school variety never really set the neigborhood on fire. Sendo Sushi on its second floor is an equally non-boundary-pushing entry to Bangkok’s sushi scene. Taking it to the deal-toting fusion-sushi bigwigs like Sushi Mori, Nippon Kai and Sushi Shin, this spot features a menu literally spilling with laminated discount cards offering up to 50-percent off a big portion of the dishes. Make good use of them and dinner at Sendo can just about add up. The restaurant has its fundamentals right, for one thing, meaning basic sushi

comes plentifully sliced and tastes perfectly fresh. During lunch hours, you can get a B450 set complete with seven lovely pieces of sushi just the right size to take down in one bite, along with some tuna maki and tamago (omelet). Order the same thing at peak times and you’d pay double that. Excusing the rubbery omelet and a piece of eel that tastes like leftovers from the week before, it’s a satisfying effort. But everything else we try comes up severely short. An omelet stuffed with that same past-its-prime eel tastes all of its B120 price tag—oily and covered in a sweet soy sauce that makes for a sickly combination with the overly sweetened egg. Their signature Dynamite Roll (B300, currently discounted to B150) is a salmon-topped assault to the stomach thanks to a buttery cheese filling so weak it’s like biting into lard. We also have nothing good to say about the negitoro don rice bowl’s slimy mix of tuna offcuts and ikura pearls—avoid, whether at the B1,350 RRP or B675 discount price. If you want good sushi, then head across the road to Endo at The Taste Thonglor. If you want cheap sushi, then turn up here (just don’t let the rest of the menu distract you).

Bangkok in Mourning

Bangkok Street Show (Dec 12)

Thailand is in mourning, and the government has called for people to acknowledge a 30-day period without entertainment. As a result, many events in Bangkok have been canceled for the coming weeks. We’ve been calling around venues and organizers to keep you updated on what changes have occurred. While for now many future events cannot confirm whether they are canceled or not, we have compiled a list (right) of what we know so far. For many restaurants and bars, the situation is business as usual. At Mandarin Oriental’s Bamboo Bar, for example, they remain open throughout the weekend, though there will be no live music as a mark of respect. Studio Lam will also be canceling all events until Nov 13 though the bar will be open as usual from this weekend onwards. Nightclubs are less likely to be open, with Ce La Vi, Demo, Sing Sing, Beam and Live RCA all closed until further notice. As for Halloween, almost everywhere we spoke to has canceled, and the rest were unable to confirm. For restaurants, you can expect most places to remain open, though we highly recommend calling ahead to check with the venue before you head out.

Set on the ground floor of the recently renovated mall, the space is designed to pay homage to the style of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and his signature pattern of intertwining white and colored grids which spread across the floor and walls of the gallery. The art itself is displayed across a series of rooms connected by tunnels in a minimalistic style. In collaboration with its sister branch in Paris, the gallery selects highlight pieces from artists, rather than entire series, and presents them all in the same space to create a dynamic and engaging gallery.

Sathorn’s latest contemporary art gallery comes in the form of a large, open space with airy high ceilings perfect for welcoming large-scale artworks. The gallery dedicates itself to exhibiting conceptual, often confronting, artworks in an attempt to promote more experimental art in Bangkok. Also attached to the building is Tentacles, an art space-slash-cafe that frequently hosts art workshops, exhibitions and activities while serving up coffee and snacks.

The long-standing art gallery and institution that was previously at Silom Galleria finds itself a new home. In keeping with the mission of its branches in Beijing and Hong Kong, the new space focuses on showcasing the modern works of contemporary art heavyweights from China and Southeast Asia. Its upcoming exhibition, dubbed “Angel’s Exodus,” running from Nov 19-Dec 31, showcases the latest works from Indonesian visual artist Heri Dono whose work often explores political and social problems in Indonesia.

Founded by Nigel Power and Mat Trusler, two visual art professors from King Mongkut's University of Technology, this art space sits in a four-story renovated shop-house in Chinatown. On the ground floor, visitors will find an open-access print studio for hands-on learning about letterpress printing and other creative workshops. Meanwhile, the upstairs floors are dedicated to small-scale art exhibitions, screenings and seminars.
