We recall a time, not so long ago, when we’d spot a few fun runs happening in town. Being BK Magazine, we thought, “Hey, that’s neat. Let’s do a little roundup: Five Runs to Look Forward to Next Month.” See, our job is pretty dumb that way. We round stuff up. We posted the roundup, you clicked “like” on Facebook, it was all good. Nothing out of the ordinary. No reason for concern. We do roundups all the time. We’ve even had weeks, where, weirdly, you’d have four crafty workshops to make your own crappy little bag with stuff sewn onto it. Fine. “Five Great Workshops to Make Gifts Your Friends Don’t Want.” Easy. But those things don’t last. They go away. You don’t get a barrage of build-a-bear sessions every single weekend. Because if you did, you would go live somewhere else. You would just be like, “This is it. I can take military dictatorship and the worst traffic in the world. But these craft workshops, that’s where I draw the line. I’m moving to Paris, where they have people to make the bags for you.” The runs, though, have not moved on. They’re here to stay. And you know what? Some of us don’t run. In fact, the vast majority of us don’t run. But week after week after week, we get reminded of that fact by events increasingly specific and insistent in their bid to say, “RUN, YOU FAT PIGS!” First it was run with music, then run with color, then run 21km with an extra 7km thrown in (free!), then run with rock, then run as a couple... Have you noticed that even movies at the cinema start with a little film on how we should all exercise now? If moviegoers wanted to exercise, do you really think they would go stuff their face with dehydrated squid and popcorn while in a seated position? Is nowhere safe from exercise? Is nothing sacred? The creeping idea is that non-runners are louche, probably communists, NGO workers or Rohingya—the kind of people who’d read 1984 while eating a sandwich. Maybe that will be the ultimate test, when they come round us up at the Star Wars premiere. “You! Run!,” they’ll shout. “Too slow! It’s off to attitude adjustment for you.” So put down those dystopian novels and get training now. The Great “You Can Run but You Can’t Hide Run” is coming to a park near you—5km, 10km, or 15 years at Bang Kwang.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Buying cars

Not: Preventing traffic

Good news, comrades! The Ministry of Industry reports that output from Thai car factories is going up, up, up. Though the outlook’s bleak for all our other major industries—plastics, electronics, unlicensed Minion merchandise—we continue to put enough new Toyota Fortuners on the road to ensure none of us will ever get anywhere on time. So head to the Motor Expo this weekend to keep our economy in motion—if the traffic around Impact doesn’t stop you.

Hot: Sriracha

Not: Hua Hin

It’s official. The industrial port on Thailand’s eastern seaboard might soon be as cool as its namesake Californian condiment. OK, that might be stretching it, but there is a new shopping complex where branches of Bangkok’s favorite pizzeria (Peppina) and izakaya (Shakariki 432, see page 14) have opened shop, as well as a Japanese mall by the people behind Nihonmura. First news of a Mediterranean-themed Sansiri condo and we’re selling the place in Cha-Am.

INTERVIEW Juck Somsaman, 48, worked at one of America’s most reputed visual effects studios, Rhythm & Hues (involved in films like the Academy Award-winning Babe [1995] and, more recently, The Life of Pi [2012]) for 15 years before returning to Bangkok to open Monk Studios in 2009. While continuing to work on Hollywood films like Rango (2011) and George Lucas’s Strange Magic (2015), Juck has since taken on more jobs from Japan, as well as local projects like Khun Thong Daeng: The Inspiration (in cinemas now, see page 44), an animated movie dedicated to HM the King’s beloved dog. How did you first get involved in the Hollywood animation industry?

Hot: Outdoor jazz

Not: Diplomacy

Thailand and its new US ambassador have really not got off to a good start. As we send back political dissidents and throw around Section 112 charges like confetti, all he can do is stand in front of TV cameras tutting. In light of the fact we’re already pissed off Denmark got the cute, social-media savvy gay guy, he really needs to do better. To make amends, we suggest he open up that lovely lawn on Wireless Road to a second round of concert in the Park—one where French bulldogs and bottles of Prosecco are welcome.

After working as a photographer in Thailand, I wanted to get my master’s in film so I decided I would go to the US. But I didn’t have the portfolio for film. I stumbled on a computer arts program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. The whole thing was very new 25 years ago, so no one really had a portfolio for it. After graduating, I started working at Rhythm & Hues. Why come back to Bangkok? After 15 years, I just wasn’t that excited by great fireballs and explosions anymore. I wanted to delve into storytelling, real human life, so I decided to come back and launch Monk Studios. I chose this name because it reflects Eastern philosophy. Where does most of your work come from?

Hot: Chicken rights

Not: Human rights

Another week, another independent labor investigation making us look bad. Turns out labor practices in Thai chicken farms might be as crooked as an immigration bureau in the Southern provinces, which spells bad news for a country that exports some 270,000 tons of chicken to Europe every year. How was this not spotted sooner? Apparently investigators were too concerned about the welfare of the chickens to notice the condition of the people slaughtering them.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

series, things like Talking Tom [the talking cat app]. I’m also proud that we’re getting more work from Japan. We’ve come so far that the country that gave the world manga is hiring us for their work. No one would have predicted this 4-5 years ago. Our new generation of visual artists are really talented. How did you get involved with Thong Daeng: The Inspiration? I was contacted by Vinij Lertratanachai, the producer and owner of Fresh Air Festival, who wanted to create an animated movie about Khun Thong Daeng, His Majesty’s beloved dog. It’s destiny. When I first came back to Thailand, I wanted to do the same thing. But the whole process was pretty complicated, so I gave up on it. It’s not exactly as I envisioned; we’re not animating the actual Thong Daeng. Instead, we’re animating a dog character inspired by some of Thong Daeng’s traits. Thong Lor is a

puppy who’s extremely loyal but also afraid of thunder. What are your favorite animations? Of my works, apart from Babe , I would say Scooby Doo [2002] and Garfield [2004]. I like that these were made for kids, meaning the dialog and imagery is really simple. These days, I’m more into animation from Japan and France. The latter is really unique; they don’t have big production budgets, but the stories are really unpredictable. What’s next for Monk Studios? We plan to produce more original content, as we’ve tasted success from our award-winning short films Escape of the Gingerbread Man [2011] and Nine [2014, based on Thai illustrator Songsin Tiewsomboon’s book Nine Lives]. I’m now interested in the environment—I want to create a Thai animation for kids to teach them to take care of nature. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

CHINA

Shanghai Nights The lowdown on the city’s six newest night spots—with plenty of cocktails, craft beers, outdoor terraces and loose behavior. By Ric Stockfis The Cut

T

o call Shanghai a party town is an understatement. Every week has a new bar or club opening, and about a dozen celebrating anniversaries of some sort. Staying on top of where’s hot is a full-time job. Fortunately, we’ve done it for you.

The Cut From the same group as the infamous Bar Rouge and exceptional dining experience Ultraviolet, this year-old restaurant and bar atop IAPM mall is now the hottest spot in town on a Thursday night (from 5-10pm two drinks go for just 60RMB [B300]). Come for the affordable steak and fries sets, but stay for the split-level rooftop bar with its glammed-up expat crowd, indie-disco soundtrack and views across the city. IAPM, Unit L6-606, 999 Huahai Rd.

Le Baron Local lifestyle mag City Weekend’s Best New Club 2015, this grungy, Parisian-styled nightspot is the one place on everyone’s lips as soon as they’re done with the one they’re currently in. The guys at the door can be strict (dress up or else be born beautiful), but once you make it in it’s a refreshingly unpretentious place, decked out in every shade of red and witness to some pretty loose behavior. 7/F, 20 Donghu Rd., near Huaihai Rd.

The Nest Part of the stalwart MUSE family of clubs, this cocktail and gastro-lounge is a few blocks back from the Bund waterfront. With prime real estate and a Grey Goose partnership, it checks all the right boxes for snobbery, but is in fact refreshingly low-key. It’s got some of the best (and best value) vodka-based cocktails in town and a soundtrack (think The Killers and The Smiths) far removed from your usual table-service spots. While there’s an outdoor terrace, if it’s views you’re after you’ll have more luck at newbie Shen (7/F, 7 Yan’an Dong Rd., +86 21 6316-9119), an upmarket Bund-side offering from the guys behind legendary local bar DADA.

Union Trading Company Speakeasies are, ironically, no longer hard to find in Shanghai, with crowds flocking to the likes of Speak Low (579 Fuxing Middle Rd., near Ruijin No.2 Rd.) and newbie Flask (432 Shaanxi South Rd., near Fuxing Middle Rd.) whose doors are hidden behind bookshelves and vintage Coke vending machines. And while year-old Union has the same Prohibition-era charm, it dispenses with all the pretense: it’s simply a very, very good cocktail bar (with a 100-strong and seasonally refreshed list) in a cozy spot on one of the former French Concession’s leafy lanes. 64 Fenyang Rd., near Fuxing Middle Rd., +86 21 64183077

SPLURGE

Styled like a cooler version of Raffles’ Long Bar in Singapore (there’s even beef rendang on the menu), this cocktail bar is part of the Taixing Road complex, a stack of F&B venues that opened mid-2014 in a restored courtyard amid the old lanes off Nanjing Road, is extremely popular right now (and is much more fun than the better known Xintiandi). The ground-floor, colonial-inspired Starling is a great place to people-watch, before moving on for tapas at Tomatito (from acclaimed Spanish chef and Shanghai kingpin Willy Trullas Moreno) and even more cocktails at el ocho and Logan’s Punch, all of which are right next door.

The PuLi Hotel & Spa

99 Taixing Rd., near Nanjing West Rd.

Zapfler A four-month old dedicated craft beer spot on the infamous Yongkang Lu (a quiet backstreet just five years ago that’s now the Shanghai equivalent of Khao San Road), this simple hole-in-the-wall stocks beer from a German-run brewery out in the small town of Jintan. They’re currently using 10 of their eventual 27 taps and turning out a range of ales, including the flagship Bearded Bear IPA, smoked and honey lagers, and an alcoholic ginger beer.

VISA Thai and foreign nationalities can apply either at the China Visa Application Service Center (5/F, Thanapoom Tower, 1550 Petchaburi Rd., 02-2075999). Visa for Thai is B500.

Le Baron

We stayed at six-year old design hotel The PuLi Hotel and Spa (1 Changde Rd., +86 (0) 21 2216-6973), which is just off central thoroughfare Nanjing Road West and a short walk north of the former French Concession. An icon in the world of hotel design (it was really the first of its kind in China), The PuLi is all hushed-chic (the ground floor in particular evokes the urban oasis feel with a huge teak bar and a view out over a serene reflection pool) and glamorous clientele (especially during the Shanghai International Film Festival, when we happened to be there). Also at ground level: a cozy library stocking more than 2,000 Chinese and Western titles and a pleasant garden terrace, both of which make it easy to escape the bustle of the city. At 26 stories, the PuLi is hardly the tallest building in the city, but the hotel backs onto the small and leafy Jing’an Park, which means great, unobstructed views from many of the stylish (think Nespresso, Bose and rainforest showers) 200-odd rooms and suites, especially from the Grand Studios in the corners. On-site restaurant Jing’an offers seasonal, Asian-influenced international dishes (breakfast is served at the lobby bar or on the outdoor terrace) and the hotel also boasts an indoor infinity pool and is home to Shanghai’s first Anantara Spa. It’s a great base from which to explore the city, starting with the historic Jing’an Temple right nearby, as well as the shops, restaurants and bars of the Shanghai Kerry Centre right across the street. Rooms start from B9,391/night if you book through Design Hotels.

HUA HIN

Old School Loligo Resort Hua Hin (www.loligoresort.com, 032-536-777) is next door to—and managed by the same team as—Let’s Sea Hua Hin. It only opened on Dec 1, 2015, but here’s what we know so far. The rooms are pretty big given the prices (40-58-sq-meter and starting from B2,588/night). The style is refreshingly old-school, with nods to Rama 7’s adorable summer palace. It’s not on the beach but it’s a one-minute walk away. And it’s got its very own prohibition-era-style bar. Plus the mini-suites aren’t all that pricier than the starting rate, at B2,888-3,222/night. These are opening rates and management tells us they won’t last given the resort’s positioning, which borders on four stars.

Join the Club Since the sudden recent closure of Nikki Beach, Northern Phuket has looked a little light on modern beach clubs. But that’s changed with the arrival of Skye Beach Club (www.skyebeachclub.com), a sleek semi-alfresco beachside lounge situated on the rising Nai Yang Beach. Decked out with crisp white furniture (what else?), the lounge plays host to a daily lineup of electronic DJs. There’s no swimming pool, but also no entry fee—though you’re demanded to at least order some food or a round of drinks. The head chef, who formerly spent time working at Gaggan, rolls out a menu that goes beyond poolside snacks to dishes like snow fish kebabs served with crusted herbs and parmesan (B690) and slow-cooked lamb shank (B890). Formerly an isolated beach hidden away by farmlands, rubber plantations and pineapple fields, Nai Yang may not be quite as booming as its touristy counterparts but has recently welcomed a spate of nearby swanky drinking and dining venues like Hotel Indigo’s Rivet.

CHIANG RAI

Full Bloom Chiang Rai is home to some of Thailand’s most beautiful cherry blossoms, and the best time to catch them in full bloom is during the Doi Mae Salong Tea & Sakura Festival this Dec 28-Jan 2. Situated around an hour-andhalf outside the provincial center, Doi Mae Salong has been dubbed a miniature Yunnanese Shangri-La and is famous for its lush green valleys, tea plantations and strong ties to Southern Chinese culture. Apart from row upon mountainous row of budding sakura flowers, you’ll also get to watch cultural performances led by the district’s various ethnic groups, taste some of the country’s best teas and buy special OTOP products made by the hilltribes. Just be sure to pack warm clothes, though, as temperatures in December are predicted to be between 10-12 degrees Celsius.

SRIRACHA

Izakaya Expansion It must be all the Japanese investment. One of Bangkok’s late-night izakaya favorites, the Osaka-hailing Shakariki 432 (165/133 Moo 10, Surasak, 038-312-049, www. shakariki432.com), has opened a branch in Sriracha. The new spot boasts the same warm, down-to-earth ambience as its Bangkok counterpart, with plain wooden tables and walls filled with laminated printouts of their food. The menu is the same, too, with decently priced dishes such as curry katsu udon (deepfried beef intestine udon with curry soup, B230) and okonomiyaki (Japanese-style pizza, B230)—not to mention its hilariously inappropriate dessert known as Men’s Parfait. The best news? They’re open till 3am, which means no more midnight McDonald’s runs. The restaurant actually sits downstairs from another recent Bangkok arrival, pizza specialists Peppina. Now Sriracha just needs a couple burger trucks and we promise to do a full travel story about it.

Space Chic In case you’ve been living under a rock (or in a galaxy far, far away), Star Wars is back! The forthcoming Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens (in cinemas Dec 17) serves as the inspiration for a new holiday collection from Thai readyto-wear brand Jaspal. Apart some Stormtrooper motifs, “May the Force Be With You” quotes and neon-like glow-in-the-dark color coating, the men’s collection (dubbed Sports Futuristic) actually doesn’t stray too far from the brand’s dapper style in items like metallic jackets, black polo shirts and sporty jumpers. For ladies, the Glamorous Galactic range sees more glitter, as in the black and gold striped long-sleeve top and blue metallic pleated skirt. Available at Jaspal stores nationwide. Eye Tint, Giorgio Armani

Highlight: Tint is normally used for lips or cheeks; this is one of the first times we’ve seen it used as eyeshadow. Price: B1,225 at Giorgio Armani counter at King Power, Suvarnabhumi Airport

Double Wear Makeup To Go Liquid Compact, Estee Lauder 2

Highlight: This double-wear foundation comes with packaging that should have been invented a long time ago: it looks like a compact powder case, but it’s filled with liquid foundation which you pump to activate. A perfect fit for your cosmetic bag, it also comes with a puff. Available in eight shades.

Great for a touch-up during the day that won’t take your make-up off. It’s washable, can be used for up to 60 days, and comes with a small mirror.

Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette, Urban Decay 5

Street Side The latest opening from chef Thitid Tassanakajorn (Le Du, Taper, Baan), Baa Ga Din, offers the city’s most modern interpretation of Thai street food yet. Working with American chef Chandler Schultz, Thithid’s small plates are deceptively simple. Humble deep-fried chicken wings are partly deboned, pressure-cooked before frying, and served with a fermented green chili sauce and basil mayo (B160). Crispy oysters (hoy tod, B280) are battered-fried with egg mousse then served with oyster mayo and chili puree. These little purees which appear in nearly every dish are just amazing concentrates of flavor, such as the one served with the moo krob (crispy pork belly, B200), which involves hours of jus reduction. In fact, there’s a feeling you’re getting Le Du-levels of fine-dining, molecular sophistication at much more casual prices. The setting, too, has the feel of a large bistro that references rusticity and nostalgia through numerous symbolic decorations: fighting cocks and fish, lottery numbers, utilitarian tables fit for a schoolyard. Its owner, entrepreneur-slash-tea connoisseur Han Mei, uses products from his family’s brand in London, China Life. Priced at B150-180 per pot with free water refill, the loose-leaf tea selection covers it all, from hand-picked white and green teas to pu-erhs and matcha, sourced from China, Taiwan and Japan. Easy options like iced tea (made in-house with fresh fruits) and unsweetened milk teas are available at B90-B95, while Mei also plays around with funkier options like the matcha, raspberry and lime shot (B80) and fresh avocado soya milk (B95). 1/F, Parklane, Sukhumvit Soi 63 (Ekkamai), 085-664-2616. This Dec 4-13, restaurants along the Chao Phraya River are rolling out special menus, food tastings and even a farmers’ market at Anantara Riverside. The Bangkok River group’s 10-day River on a Plate festival puts particular focus on wine-pairing dinner deals. The B2,888 three-course menus offered at Shangri-la’s Angelini, The Peninsula’s Mei Jiang and Asiatique’s Brasserie 9 come with one bottle of Whale’s Tale Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough) 2013, Pinot Noir (Central Otago) 2013 or Malvolti Prosecco Cuvee Brut 75cl. White. Meanwhile, a B1,888 net tasting menu is available at more casual outlets like Chatrium’s Lobby Lounge, Royal Orchid Sheraton’s Sambal and Anantara Riverside’s Trader Vic’s, to name a few, which comes with Canepa Classico Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 or Chardonnay 2015.www.bangkokriverexperience.com.

French luxury chocolate brand Hugo & Victor has opened a Bangkok pop-up shop, at Emquartier’s deli-slash-decor store Another Story. Running through Feb 14, 2016 (yep, Valentine’s!), the kiosk’s highlights are Hugues Pouget’s delicious half-sphere chocolate bonbons, presented in stylish, black hardcover notebook boxes and packed with luscious fillings like lime and orange and caramel. Other offerings include chocolate bars, vanilla marshmallows, lemon pound cake, chestnut pavlova and financiers. Innovative patissier and chocolatier Pouget formerly worked as executive pastry chef at the three-Michelin-star restaurant Guy Savoy, where he won the French Dessert Championship in 2003. He opened his own pastry shop in 2010. Another Story, 4/F, Emquartier, Sukhumvit Rd. BTS Phrom Phong

23 Bar & Gallery

The guy formerly behind the legendary dive bar Bar 23, on Sukhumvit Soi 16, shifted over to Soi Nana with this similarly-titled, similarly-barebones affair. Expect the same focus on cold local beers, basic house pours, a soundtrack that flits between ‘90s Britpop and more Rastafarian sounds, and the odd exhibition.

Hiding behind an ominous, heavy wooden door is a small, moody bar belonging to a who’s-who of Bangkok’s art and nightlife scene, from fashion photographers and party organizers to mixologists and musicians. The highlight is the vast collection of gin, from the must-try Hanami (the house pour) to the locally distilled Iron Balls. The decor is basic, mixing old shop-house charm with racy photography exhibitions. The menu changes every day, so do check with the barman for that latest arrival.

A hop, skip and a jump from Soi Nana is this new beer bar. Here, architect-turnedbrewer Pieak Pipattanaphon, who founded Golden Coins brewery, and Avi Yashaya, the guy behind the Brewtopia beer meetups, serve a small selection of Thai-made craft brews on tap (starting from a pretty appealing B160, too). There’s also regular live music and a short list of classic pub grub.

Located just across the street from Soy Sauce, this straightforward but stylish bar does just what you’d hope for. Live soul and funk bands fill the tiny front room every Tue-Sat, often continuing the party after the shutters come down, and the bar specializes in beer laced with Kombucha tea. Good news: they’ve just added food trucks to the mix. See Facebook for the schedule.

One of a handful of recent openings citywide looking to infuse traditional Thainess into its drinks and music, this restored shophouse has plenty of raw appeal. A good line of home-infused ya dong (Thai herbal whiskey) is available by the shot or in refreshing cocktails mixed with Thai fruits, herbs and spices. The kitchen specializes in Thai tapas (as well as a few classics like pad Thai). Come nightfall musicians take the stage to play traditional music from the Central region.

And the best bit: they come with unlimited French fries and soft drinks. Meat options for the burger include king tiger prawn, salmon, chicken teriyaki, Kurobuta pork and wagyu beef with bacon, all fried up right in front of you on the teppanyaki grill. Want something more Japanese? Then ask for tonkotsu ramen instead of a burger, served with either salmon, Kurobuta pork or wagyu beef. Available every Mon-Sat from 11:30am-2:30pm only. The Bacon, Egg and Cheese set at Flour Shoppe (B229) This popular dessert cafe expanded its menu with a savory side earlier this year. Thai-Irish head chef Brian Hill says he’s taken inspiration from classic American diners, though the focus remains on house-made ingredients. We can’t go past the breakfast set to start the day, with its soft English muffin or buttermilk biscuit comprising bacon, egg and cheese, plus side of crunchy “tater tots,” coffee and orange juice. G/F, Central Chidlom, Phloen Chit Rd., 081-826-8530. BTS Phloen Chit

The ox tongue stew at Minibar Cafe (B320) Minibar Cafe doesn’t limit itself to one cuisine. Spicy Thai salads sit alongside tres tres French dishes. The common thread, however, is that it’s all simple and comforting. And they don’t get more comforting than the ox tongue stew, which comes with a big scoop of mashed potatoes and gravy. 5/F, Central Embassy, 1031 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-1605610. BTS Phloen Chit

One of Rayong’s, and indeed Thailand’s, bestknown seafood sources has brought its signature mantis shrimp to town. The accessible eatery offers a wide range of seafood dishes at affordable prices starting from just B85. The highlight has to be the tom yam noodles, complete with juicy mantis shrimp, available in dry or soup form—sheer seafood indulgence. 20-20/1 Ruamrudee Village, Soi Ruam Rudi, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-019-0588. BTS Phloen Chit

The salmon with spicy cream at Jubei Izakaya (B270) This minimal-looking izakaya in Mahatun Plaza does all the usual drinking food, like karaage, tempura, bao buns, gyoza, various styles of ramen and yakitori, but our favorite is this salmon dish featuring a big fillet sitting on top of a bed of veggies topped with a surprisingly balanced spicy cream sauce. Pair it with one (or three) of the interesting sake- and shochu-based drinks. G/F, Mahutan Plaza, Ploen Chit Rd., 02-651-5020. BTS Phloen Chit

The glazed pork bun at Ippudo (B80) Having spread its empire to more than 130 branches around the world, this mega-chain is renowned for its Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen, bursting with intense pork flavor and umami goodness. But there’s more to the restaurant than noodles. We’re also particularly fond of its twist on the Taiwanese street burger, gua bao, which contains the ramen brand’s renowned melt-in your mouth chashu. 3/F, Central Embassy, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-160-5672. Reopened as Osito, the new kitchen is helmed by German chef Daniel Bucher, who offers a more serious take on Spanish food, using as much local and organic produce as possible. The froyo at Pinkberry (starting at B99 for small, 100g) Offering a taste of upscale, Hollywood froyo, this chain from California lives up to the hype, with its melt-in-your-mouth softness and refreshing sourness that isn’t too overpowering. This is what frozen yogurt is all about—silky smooth soft-serve without being fatty and creamy. There’s a reason why it came out on top in our frozen yogurt taste test.

The cheese toasties at Siwilai Rocket Coffeebar (B195) Even this wholesome, feel-good coffee shop is getting in on the grilled cheese action. You can stop pretending with the rocket salads and open-face affairs of pickled fish and rye bread now they’re offering an indulgent cheese toastie made using fontina (a mild Italian cow’s milk cheese perfect for melting) and truffle paste. It’s served alongside a mini tomato-watermelon gazpacho soup— so it’s not all bad.

OPEN DOOR

Luka Flat whites and smashed avocados amid hip rustic decor. The buzz: Chong Nonsi really is the new Phrom Phong. After a slew of cool new bars and cafes opening on Sathorn Soi 10-12 (plus a couple ultra-luxe offerings at the intersection), the area's revival has made it all the way to Thanon Pan, a leafy soi running from the Hindu temple on Silom to the Myanmar Embassy on Sathorn. It's close to that end that you'll find Luka, a cafe within the newest branch of Casa Pagoda. With a focus on light fare (salads, sandwiches) and coffee, Luka is fast becoming a favorite lunch spot for Sathorn's busy professionals. The decor: Just like the other Casa Pagoda shops, this location's decor is meant to look like the edgy Provence villa of a couple of urban weekenders: a mix of 1900s bistro paraphernalia, distressed tufted leather couches, and vintage-looking seats upholstered in

28

salvaged fabrics. It all basks in plenty of light, befitting Luka's menu. The food: Chef Sirote Udomthongsuk, who boasts stints at fancy kitchens like Savelberg, Gaggan and Water Library, serves up downto-earth comfort food that's ideal for breakfast, lunch and brunch: breakfast burrito (B170) with quinoa, scrambled egg, cheese, sausage, tomato salsa, avocado and "Thai chipotle" salsa; grilled cheese sandwich (B150) served with a thick tomato soup; "sloppy meatball sandwich" with fresh mozzarella, roasted garlic, sweet marinara and a brioche bun (B290); and, on weekends only, sweet or savory French toast (both B160). Sauces, juices and pickles are homemade, while the produce comes from reputable names like Adams Organic, the Royal Project Foundation and Sloane's.

The drinks: Proper coffee by a barista who'll go out of his way to make useful recommendations (from B70 for an espresso) and a solid list of teas, including single origin and blend options made with leaves from China, Sri Lanka, Japan and Israel. Try the white tea silver tips (B160) or green tea spearmint (B120), both made with organic tea leaves from Israel. Why you should care: For all its newfound hipster cred, Chong Nonsi is no Sala Daeng it comes to lunchtime. Luka isn't just a welcome addition to the neighborhood for nearby office workers, though. Come Saturday and Sunday, it's a proper brunch destination in its own right. Gregoire Glachant Casa Pagoda, 64/1 Pan Rd., 02-637-8558. Open Mon-Fri 10am-7pm; Sat-Sun 8:30-7pm. BTS Surasak

NEW AND NOTED

Best Beef There’s a new beef jerky specialist in town. Bangkok Biltong (www.fb.com/BkkBiltong) has just introduced the South African delicacy biltong (spiced air-dried cured meat) to Bangkok. Putting the emphasis on health, the brand makes its eponymous product using grass-fed, free-range imported and local beef with no additives or preservatives. Choose from original (starting at B150/100g) or peri-peri (B190/100g). You can also state your preference for wet or dry and lean or fatty meat when placing an order through Facebook.

Leave it to Beaver After two years as an online store, dessert specialist Fat Beaver (2/F, The Seasons, 899 Phahon Yothin Soi 1, 088-5770502) has settled on a permanent outlet. Expect to find delicious coconut cake (B80), molten chocolate cake (B135), passion fruit cake with raspberry jam (B80), Eton Mess-inspired meringue cake (B135) and granola with house-made mixed

berry sauce (B89). Espresso starts at B50 and hot chocolate B95. Stay tuned for breakfast dishes.

Korea Opportunities Banjoo BBQ (2/F, Mille Malle, 66/4 Sukhumvit Soi 20, 081-9494851) aims to be a younger, more modern Korean restaurant than Bangkok is typically accustomed to. Le Cordon Bleu graduate Injin "Lauren" Kim serves up East-meets-West fare such as white-cream bulgogi (Korean-style grilled pork) spaghetti (B260), Korean-seasoned beef burger (B350) and kimchi pancakes (B280). More traditional options include tteokbokki (glutinous rice cake stir-fried with vegetables and sauces, B250) and kimchi soup (B250), while the barbecue menu highlights Australian grain-fed Black Angus, priced from B350 for 160g chuck roll to B590 for 200g rib eye, with refillable veggies and side dishes. To drink, there are cold-pressed juices (B120) and coffee made from Ceresia beans (starting at B80), as well as Korean whiskey (B150-190). Natcha Sanguankiattichai

This popular diner describes itself as a Tokyo Cafe Style doing Japanese and Western food. Its delicate interior design, with marble tables, streamlined overhead lamps and homely wooden furniture, is matched by the food, presented daintily on cute tableware—no wonder most diners can’t resist taking photos. The menu is composed of chirashi, maki and salad to pasta and pizza. Try their festive "Scrumptious Circus" menu which comprises items like Nagoya-style Chicken Wings (B195), Chef Camel’s Spare Ribs (B550) and Circus Chocolate Tart (B240). Tim Ho Wan HHHH Chinese. 3/F, Terminal 21, Sukhumvit Soi 21, 02-006-5288. No alcohol. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Asoke. BB-BBB. F

Tim Ho Wan, the Hong Kong hole-in-thewall that wowed the world by winning a Michelin star in 2010, arrived in Bangkok in August to much fanfare. However, it didn’t take long for murmurings of discontent, in particular complaints about lax service and dim sum sweetened for the Thai palate. We’re not really buying the claims of inauthenticity, though. While a far cry from the original 19-seater venue, the Terminal 21 branch mimics many of the brand’s larger, open canteen-like spaces all around Australasia. Though the crowds have diluted somewhat, don’t expect a fine-dining ambience; Tim Ho Wan is more akin to a high-volume tourist site: your order is taken before you’re shepherded to your seat, dishes come flying at breakneck pace, and then you’re outta there. We’ve

Kati HHHH Thai. 46/7 Piman 49, Sukhumvit Soi 49, 092-6260011. Open daily 10:30am-9pm. Corkage B300. B-BB. F

With its homey wooden table sets, hanging light bulbs and floor-to-ceiling windows, this may look like just another cute Japanese dessert cafe. But the reality is a bit more exciting. Kati is the first model restaurant from Thai Delicious, a government-supported project that has vowed to use specially-created tasting robots to banish the world of bad and inauthentic Thai food. Developed at a cost of B3 million, the so-called e-Delicious machine comprises nine sensors to measure the correct balance of six flavors: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, savory and spicy. But the results here are no great leap forward. While we’re pleased at the project’s pledge to use only high-quality and organic ingredients with strictly no MSG, we’re not convinced Kati is a great representative of real Thai food. The problem is the overwhelming sweetness of most dishes. To be fair, sometimes it Ratings

no complaints. The wait-staff may swarm around you in comically large numbers, but they’re efficient and informative. For us, the food comes close to the original, too, with prices that compare favorably. The one-sided placemat menu features 25 dim sum dishes. Some of it is superb, like the soft, mildly tangy pan-fried radish cake (B100) and the fluffy steamed egg cake (B80). We can’t say the same of the shrimp vermicelli roll (B150), which is doughy and all-but-flavorless, or the glutinous rice cooked in lotus leaf (B150) and beef rice and fried egg (B120), which represent all that’s gloopy and stodgy about Hong Kong cuisine. But most of the classics are done right, like the delicious pork and shrimp shumai (B120), har gow (shrimp dumpling, B130) and mango sago dessert (B90), which is thicker and fresher than those we’ve tasted at other branches, bursting with pomelo tartness. The only time we feel cheated is with the famous pork bun (B120/3 pieces): supposed to come oozing with barbecue sauce and chunks of roast pork, it here comes puffed full of hot air. The immense flavor is still there, as is the trademark crisp, sweet bun. It’s good, but frequent travelers to HK know it can be so much better. Peel away the Michelin-star back-story and you’re left with affordable, mall dim sum that mostly hits the mark. But if it’s ceremony and delicacy you want, just visit the incredible Chef Man. works; but other times it’s an outright disaster, starting with the complimentary steamed egg, which comes piled with unnecessarily sugary crispy garlic. The yam woon sen (vermicelli salad with seafood, B280), too, is like eating a bowl of sweet noodles. The nam prik kapi (shrimp paste with vegetables and fried mackerel, B260) is an improvement, thanks to the aromatic shrimp paste, but it’s a shame that any hint of saltiness is all but extinguished. In the reincarnated street food staple krapao nua toon (stir-fried braised beef with hot basil, B260), we enjoy the tenderness of the beef, but it’s let down by what tastes like a pre-cooked sauce. On the other hand, the sour-yet-saccharine tom yam goong (spicy tiger prawn soup, B320) is saved by the addition of shrimp-head paste for a richer texture. The best dishes are indeed the ones that are meant to be sweet, as in the moist gai gorlae (barbecue chicken, B180) with satay-style sauce, or the addictive gaeng massamun gai (chicken coconut curry with tomato, B280) with its creamy and well-rounded curry. It’s unsurprising, then, that their desserts are killer, whether it’s the well-crafted mango ice cream with sticky rice (B120) or the aromatic coconut granita with kluay chuem (syrupy banana, B80). While presentation is nice and the flavors here may appeal to Bangkokians’ notorious sweet tooth, we’re not entirely sold. In attempting to standardize Thai flavors, Kati doesn’t quite get the balance right.

Another weekend, another market… except this one might be the most picturesque of the lot. The Great Outdoor Market takes over the Bangkok Docklands (Charoenkrung Rd., BTS Saphan Taksin) this Dec 10-13, presenting pop-up cafes, art installations and designers' stores amid a chilledout riverside atmosphere. There will even be live bands on a boat! Here’s hoping they’ve got the safety issues completely sorted out this time.

TUE Cause a Scene Seattle-native Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, is known for his confrontational and emotionally raw brand of indie-pop that tackles weighty gender politics. He’s even been reported as saying the drag-queen-packed video for his single "Queen" was intended to scare heterosexuals. Find out what all the hype is all about when he performs at Bangkok’s hottest new live venue, which happens to be a gallery, Bangkok City City Gallery (13/3 Sathorn Soi 1, 083-087-2725) this Dec 8. Tickets are B1,400 at the door.

In celebration of His Majesty the King’s 88th birthday this Dec 5, Lumphini Park (Rama 9 Rd., MRT Lumpini) will be overrun with pavement pounders of all shapes and sizes. Run for the King 2015 will challenge runners to tackle distances of either 10.5km or 2km, with all funds raised going towards HM the King’s Hua Hin Dog Shelter, assisting injured and abused dogs around the country. Visit www. runfortheking.com for details.

THU 808 State Last week’s Waterzonic was only the start. This Dec 9, Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Armin Van Buuren headlines the huge EDM-focused 808 Festival, where he’ll be joined by other huge names like Axwell & Ingrosso, Jack U, Oliver Heldens, Porter Robinson, Jamie Jones, Sharam and Claude Vonstroke, plus local talents Dan Buri, Coran, Sunju Hargun and Borys Rubin. Tickets are B2,600 at www.808festival.com.

WED Tit for Tat The Tourism Authority of Thailand has joined up with Area 5 collective and Green Vintage (JJ Green) for what looks to be another mammoth winter market. Area Five Art & Market Fair puts the focus on artworks and design products from young Thai artisans, spread across some 550 shops. Of course, it wouldn’t be a market without live performances from the likes of Slot Machine and Gene Kasidit. It all goes down at familiar stomping ground Makkasan Airport Link Station this Dec 4-13.

If you’re looking for a reason to escape the city, head over to the Jim Thompson Farm (Tambol Takob, Amphur Pak Thong Chai, Nakhon Ratchasima) this Dec 5-Jan 10 for a culturally enriching and healthy day out in the countryside. Aside from that, the farm is also a great place to get hold of fresh, organic produce–visitors can mill and winnow their own rice to take home, as well as take their pick from the variety of organic fruit and vegetables freshly grown in the “U-Pick Garden.”

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): “Like all explorers, we are drawn to discover what’s out there without knowing yet if we have the courage to face it.” Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön said that, and now I’m telling you. According to my divinations, a new frontier is calling to you. The urge to leave your familiar circle is increasingly tempting. I don’t know if you will be able to gather the resources you would require to carry out your quest. Will you be able to summon the necessary audacity? Maybe the better inquiry is this: Do you vow to use all your soulful ingenuity to summon the necessary audacity?

FATHERS AND DAUGHTERS (USA)

Drama. A young woman (Amanda Seyfried) struggles with commitment issues as a result of growing up with a widowed father (Russel Crowe) who battled mental illness throughout her childhood. Dec 3

KHUN THONG DAENG: THE INSPIRATIONS (THAI)

Animation. A lighthearted telling of three separate adventure stories featuring three Thai dogs—John, Thonglor and Copper—as inspired His Majesty the King’s own dogs. Dec 3

SUFFRAGETTE (UK)

KRAMPUS (USA)

Drama. The inspirational story of three women (Meryl Streep, Helena Botham Carter, Carey Mulligan) fighting for equality during the early feminist movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leading to crucial changes in British history. Dec 3

Comedy/Fantasy. When the problems of his dysfunctional family ruin any trace of holiday spirit in the household, a young boy accidentally summons a Christmas demon in the midst of his anger. Dec 3

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA (USA)

Action/Adventure. After a massive sperm whale violently attacks an American whaling ship, the 21 shipwrecked crewmen must resort to desperate measures on their fight for survival. Based on the true events that inspired Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick. Dec 3

Upcoming POINT BREAK (USA)

SECRET IN THEIR EYES (USA)

Action/Thriller. Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey), a young FBI agent, goes undercover and joins a team of extreme sports athletes who are suspected of being behind a string of unusual crimes. Dec 10

Action/Crime. After Jess’ (Julia Roberts) daughter is brutally murdered, she seeks help from her fellow FBI investigator (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and supervisor (Nicole Kidman) to search for the killer. Dec 10

VETERAN (SOUTH KOREA)

SWAY (THAI)

Action. While investigating a high-profile case, detective Seo Do-chul finds out that a young millionaire is pulling strings behind the scenes to ensure he fails. Dec 10

Drama. Follows the lives of three couples living in three cities around the world at three different points in time, all of whom are struggling to make their relationships work. Dec 10

SPECIAL SCREENING

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): “Once I witnessed a windstorm so severe that two 100-year-old trees were uprooted on the spot,” Mary Ruefle wrote in her book Madness, Rack, and Honey. “The next day, walking among the wreckage, I found the friable nests of birds, completely intact and unharmed on the ground.” I think that’s a paradox you’d be wise to keep in mind, Capricorn. In the coming weeks, what’s most delicate and vulnerable about you will have more staying power than what’s massive and fixed. Trust your grace and tenderness more than your fierceness and forcefulness. They will make you as smart as you need to be. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Aztec king Montezuma II quenched his daily thirst with one specific beverage. It was ground cocoa beans mixed with chili peppers, water, vanilla and annatto. Spiced chocolate? You could call it that. The frothy brew was often served to him in golden goblets, each of which he used once and then hurled from his royal balcony into the lake below. He regarded this an aphrodisiac, and liked to quaff a few flagons before heading off to his harem. The coming weeks will be one of those exceptional times when you have a poetic license to be almost Montezuma-like. What’s your personal equivalent of his primal chocolate, golden goblets and harem? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): “Unfortunately, I’m pretty lucky,” my friend Rico said to me recently. He meant that his relentless good fortune threatens to undermine his ambition. How can he be motivated to try harder and grow smarter and get stronger if life is always showering him with blessings? He almost wishes he could suffer more so that he would have more angst to push against. I hope you won’t fall under the spell of that twisted logic, Pisces. This is a phase of your cycle when you’re likely to be the beneficiary of an extra-strong flow of help and serendipity. Please say this affirmation as often as necessary: “Fortunately, I’m pretty lucky.” ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): “Charm is a way of getting the answer ‘yes’ without having asked any clear question,” wrote French author Albert Camus. I have rarely seen you better poised than you are now to embody this definition of “charm,” Aries. But there are two caveats. First, wield your mojo as responsibly as you can. Infuse your bewitching allure with integrity. Second, be precise about what it is you want to achieve—even if you don’t come right out and tell everyone what it is. Resist the temptation to throw your charm around haphazardly. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): I suspect that in the coming days you will have an uncanny power to make at least one of your resurrection fantasies come true. Here are some of the possibilities. 1. If you’re brave enough to change your mind and shed some pride, you could retrieve an expired dream from limbo. 2. By stirring up a bit more chutzpah than usually at your disposal, you might be able to revive a forsaken promise. 3. Through an act of grace, it’s possible you will reanimate an ideal that was damaged or abandoned.

Fack Ju Gohte

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): To the other eleven signs of the zodiac, the Way of the Gemini sometimes seems rife with paradox and contradiction. Many non-Geminis

would feel paralyzed if they had to live in the midst of so much hubbub. But when you are at your best, you thrive in the web of riddles. In fact, your willingness to abide there is often what generates your special magic. Your breakthroughs are made possible by your high tolerance for uncertainty. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): In Sep of 1715, a band of Jacobite rebels gathered for a guerrilla attack on Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. Their plan was to scale the walls with rope ladders, aided by a double agent who was disguised as a castle sentry. But the scheme failed before it began. The rope ladders turned out to be too short to serve their intended purpose. The rebels retreated in disarray. Please make sure you’re not like them in the coming weeks, Cancerian. If you want to engage in a strenuous action, an innovative experiment, or a bold stroke, be meticulous in your preparations. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): If you give children the option of choosing between food that’s mushy and food that’s crunchy, a majority will choose the crunchy stuff. It’s more exciting to their mouths. This has nothing to do with nutritional value, of course. Soggy oatmeal may foster a kid’s well-being better than crispy potato chips. Let’s apply this lesson to the way you feed your inner child in the coming weeks. Metaphorically speaking, I suggest you serve that precious part of you the kind of sustenance that’s both crunchy and healthy. Make sure that what’s wholesome is also fun, and vice versa. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your mascot is a famous white oak in Athens, Georgia. It’s called the Tree That Owns Itself. According to legend, it belongs to no person or institution, but only to itself. The earth in which it’s planted and the land around it are also its sole possession. With this icon as your inspiration, I invite you to enhance and celebrate your sovereignty during the next seven months. What actions will enable you to own yourself more thoroughly? How can you boost your autonomy and become, more than ever before, the boss of you? It’s prime time to expedite this effort. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Police in Los Angeles conducted an experiment on a ten-mile span of freeway. Drivers in three unmarked cars raced along as fast as they could while remaining in the same lane. The driver of the fourth car not only moved at top speed, but also changed lanes and jockeyed for position. The car that weaved in and out of the traffic flow arrived just slightly ahead of the other three. Apply this lesson to your activities in the coming week, please. There will be virtually no advantage to indulging in frenetic, erratic, breakneck exertion. Be steady, smooth and straightforward. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): You will generate lucky anomalies and helpful flukes if you use shortcuts, and work smarter rather than harder. On the other hand, you’ll drum up wearisome weirdness and fruitless flukes if you meander all over the place. Be brisk and concise, Scorpio. Avoid loafing. Associate with bubbly activators who make you laugh and loosen your iron grip. It’s a favorable time to polish off a lot of practical details with a light touch.

From today through Feb 16, the Goethe Institut of Thailand hosts its annual German Open Air Cinema series of weekly film screenings in a relaxed, garden environment.
