1. Why did Abhisit call fellow Democrat member and Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand uncontrollable? a. Because Mark didn’t get an invite for Sukhumbhand’s official trip to Portugal. b. Because Sukhumbhand said he’d queue for both of them to be first to try Glico ice cream, then ate it all himself. c. Because winning elections is just not the way things are meant to be done in this party. d. Because Sukhumbhand’s management of Bangkok makes Yingluck’s management of Thailand look pretty normal.

We know the first two weeks of January are basically spent in one drawn-out hangover. That’s why we’re here to test how well you’ve been paying attention to recent current affairs with our monthly news quiz.
2. What do we know so far about serial charter drafter Meechai Ruchupan’s latest effort? a. Income tax evaders will be made to do 20 push-ups before voting. b. Supercar parking gets constitutionally extended to include SLK Mercedes—model year 2545 and above. c. The unelected “crisis committee” will remain in some form to ensure this charter lasts as long as the rest of them (see page 6). d. The state to be given executive powers over Duangrit Bunnag’s hair if he doesn’t do something about it himself. 3. Why might Somdet Phra Maha Ratchamangalacharn be prevented from taking up the top post in the monkhood? a. At 90 years of age, he’s considered too much of a young radical. b. There may be tax discrepancies in his collection of luxury vintage cars, which would make a monk who owns a collection of luxury vintage cars look really bad. c. He can’t speak knowledgeably on spiritual matters affecting modern Thai society, like whether it’s ethical to make Look Thep dolls pay at sushi buffets. d. He actually has zero ties to the hugely successful Tiger Temple, the country’s top earning temple. 4. What did Dear Leader exercise his Section 44 powers for last week? a. Limiting the number of Korean dak galbi cafes in the Chula area to 10 per sq kilometer. b. Raising temperatures in the North by a few degrees. Or else. c. Cutting through unnecessary red tape like environmental studies to build some shiny new coal-fired power plants worthy of the first industrial revolution. d. Declaring a 999-day mourning period for Por Thrisadee.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Phra Arthit
Not: Banglamphu
Khao San is the worst. Right up there with extra-judicial punishments, terrorist atrocities and Bitterman’s Mr. Rapee spaghetti as things this country could really do without. Which is why we need to keep it between us and not let the tourists (who are right now making Banglamphu Airbnb’s second biggest-booming neighborhood worldwide) know that the street just around the corner is one of the coolest in town. For the latest hot-spots worth leaving Sathorn for, see page 18.
✓
Hot: Apathy
Not: Participation
Vote for the charter and you get a fourth power on top of the elected government; don’t vote for the charter and you get Dear Leader and the DPM Gens for the rest of the decade. We’re beginning to see why so many Bangkokians have given up caring about politics so long as their favorite bars get to stay open late again (see page 6). Hot tip: Sugar Club till 4am.
Hot: Judge rage
Not: Media ethics
It wasn’t one week ago that we were wishing for the next incident of someone parking badly or fighting with a taxi driver to give us a news story worth reading in the morning. And our wish came true! Only this time, the road-rage stems from someone who could well be suffering genuine mental health issues—a point about which our media has shown as much restraint as they did with Por’s funeral. If you need us, we’ll be rifling through Nadech’s bins.
Hot: Glico ice cream
Not: Fish-shaped croissants
The Japanification of our diets moved one step forward recently with the arrival to these shores of Glico ice cream. Think of it as Wall’s only in packaging that’s stuck in the same time warp as most of the haircuts on Soi Thaniya—something about as exciting to this town as a free Garrett popcorn giveaway at an H&M x Versace launch. So get out of that Croissant Taiyaki queue head to your nearest Family Mart now!

INTERVIEW The Crown Property Bureau recently announced it would back renovation plans for Sala Chalerm Thani, Thailand’s oldest wooden cinema, which dates back to 1918. While it is still being decided how to best develop the cinema so that it serves the community, BK caught up with its past custodian, Sompong Chotiwan, 74, who was there to witness both the rise and fall of this grand, century-old structure. How did the cinema get started? It was designed by Western architects and engineers around the Rama V period, but we’re not sure who they were. Actually, this area, including the wooden cinema, belongs to the Crown Property Bureau. My father was chosen to operate it under a company called Saha Cinema, and my family took care of it from when I was 15 years old until it closed down 20 years ago. What was it like in its glory days? The cinema was booming during the Elvis Presley period, when Western culture flourished in this country. Cinemas were like a cultural revolution and soon became people’s main source of relaxation and entertainment. Tickets started from B2 and we had 200-300 seats that were always full. Waves of Chinese and Indian movies came through but the megahits were still Thai films like Mon Rak Luktung (1970). We could manage only three show-times a day with the technology back then, and held movies for just 3-4 days as the film reels, which were expensive aback then, needed to be rotated around other

cinemas in Thailand. You know, even the founder of SF Cinema learned about this business from me? When did things start to change? When video came out. At first we thought video and technology might boost the cinema industry, but it wasn’t as we expected. At the same time, the city expanded and with it the number of cinemas. It got to a point where only one or two people were coming to our cinema before it closed. There was little hope for its survival. What have you done for a living since it closed down? I founded the Rain Drop Minisprinkle company, which designs water systems for fruit plantations in Eastern Thailand. Fortunately, my old friends from the cinema industry have helped me to get customers in Rayong and elsewhere. What does the future hold for Sala Charlerm Thani? I am one of the chairmen of the Nang Loeng community, and we are still working with the Crown Property Bureau and others involved on the

best way for it to serve the community. I strongly believe that this cinema should be revived and made useful once again. How would you like to see it used? I wish it could become a cinema-related museum. We have a Thai Film Museum but it’s really far from Bangkok in Nakhon Pathom, so it makes sense to have another one in the city. There are people, especially architect students, who visit here to appreciate this old structure’s unique design and strong build quality—it’s still standing today. So it should act as a great example for the younger generation wishing to study about cinema and architecture. Interview by Thaparit Lomsucka and Monruedee Jansuttipan

cover story
With the second draft of the constitution soon to be put to a public referendum, we took to Bangkok’s streets to ask a cross section of people whether they’re happy with the current government, and whether they’ll be exercising their democratic voice during the upcoming referendum. By Monruedee Jansuttipan
6
Pholpraphai, 56, tuk tuk driver
Charoonwit, 39, quality control expert
I don’t really care about politics. I just need to earn a daily living. Now the economy is bad. My customers have decreased by 50 percent. But I know that when the referendum for the new constitution comes around, I will be placing my vote. I never miss a single election.
I cut politics from my life following the turmoil on the streets caused by both the yellow and red shirts. Those who get in trouble from political unrest are ordinary citizens while the heads of each protest continue to live good, untroubled lives. For the new constitution, I will choose the “no vote.”
Thitipol, 25, communications student
Panya, 33, motorcycle taxi driver
People seem afraid to express their political opinions. The new constitution might seem like it’s moving things forward but I’m not sure it will solve our problems in the long term. I do still want them to finish it quickly so it can be reviewed and approved by the public and we can return to democracy very soon.
I like that the situation in Bangkok is peaceful now with no street mobs. I can’t stand when Thais fight one another as has happened in the past. Though I don’t really follow political news, I am happy that the new constitution is finished and that the public can vote on it.
Zulkeflee, 27, tea vendor
Niwat, 55, T-shirt vendor
I am not interested in politics. I care more about the economy, especially in my hometown of Pattani, where all my family still struggle to make a living with such low rubber prices. I couldn’t make money at home—that’s why I have to sell tea in Bangkok.
Since we’re being forced to move out of our market, I don’t like the situation right now. It’s hard for us to gather more than 10 people as junta law doesn’t allow us to do so. We want to gather to propose our request to stay at the old market. I want Thailand to have an election soon, but I doubt I will approve the new constitution as I don’t like the confusing vote system in which one ballot lets you choose more than one representative at once. I see no improvements from the constitution of 20 years ago. The rich still have more rights than the poor like us.
Karatay, 21, design student
Piyakorn, 27, secretary
I don’t care about politics; I’m just happy that the situation now feels calm. The presence of the junta only annoys me because they close bars too early! My favorite spot on Khao San Road used to open till 6am but now it has to close at midnight. I have no idea about the new constitution but will review it before the referendum.
I want our new constitution to be neutral. It must not favor any one side and must close all loopholes for corruption. I think I would vote for General Prayuth’s party if he had one! He has done so much that the Democrats and Pheu Thai never achieved.

cover story Prasita, 28, flight attendant
Suthida, 24, sales officer
It’s a relief that the junta has brought peace to the country, but their military backgrounds mean they haven’t helped the economy. The process of improving the economy is so slow. I want the new constitution to allow all people to exercise their democratic rights, not just those who have money. I like Prayuth. He’s straightforward. Thaksin I also thought was nice but too corrupt.
I was so fed up with the old style of Thai government. They were campaigning and promoting their policies and nothing ever got better. I want a new constitution that’s truly rigorous and which doesn’t let anyone get away from the law, no matter how rich they are.
Apisara, 27, financial advisor
Anwar, 24, receptionist
I want this new constitution to stand the test of time and live for hundreds of years as in other countries—not to change every 5-10 years! I’m happy that there are no longer any protests since I couldn’t go out anywhere before.
I want the new constitution to improve our notorious education system. We have so many tests but they don’t help our students achieve anything. I also want our justice system to be stricter. Is getting fined B500 really enough to make people afraid of the law? Though I like that Prayuth has cleared the protests, I will review the constitution before I vote in the referendum.
Pathipol , 24, art student
Sahakrit, 28, salesperson
The current political process doesn’t allow people to get involved. It’s good that they fast-track some things, like demolishing Saphan Lek, but soldiers don’t have the communication skills with the people to understand basic human rights.
Democracy might look good in other countries but the most important thing for us is our new constitution— it must be genuinely practical for Thailand. If this constitution has the capacity to solve future problems then democracy can be achieved. I hope it will prevent corruption, too.
Thanawat, 38, textile business owner
Sujitra, 25, business owner
I’m happy with the junta and their efforts to get rid of corruption. But I worry that their military backgrounds mean they cannot handle economic problems. I’m also not happy at the fury they show when people try and express political opinions. They should be more open -minded. We have come further than that.
I have no feelings about the situation right now. Thailand has got in such a mess that I’ve given up worrying about it.
Suriya, 29, taxi driver
Jettana, 30, finance and banking officer
I know nothing about the new constitution—I’m busy making a living. All I hope is that it will bring us peace and that we won’t need to write a new one ever again. It wastes our country’s money! When we get an election, I will vote for Pheu Thai as I always have done.
The new generation wants to express its political opinion and the government should let it. Yes, there must be limits but not so strict as to ban any discussion at all. Let the people be a part of drafting the new constitution. I want to see elections soon.

HUA HIN
So Fresh The Accor Hotel group’s grandiose Hotel de la Paix Hua Hin, designed by renowned Bangkok architect Duangrit Bunnag, has been revamped and rebranded as SO Sofitel Hua Hin. Set to reopen this Sunday (Jan 31), the hotel’s rooms are now themed as either SO Arty or SO Nature, with the latter coming with a four-poster wooden bed. There are three new F&B venues, too: White Oven, a restaurant serving Thai and international dishes; Hi-SO, a rooftop bar boasting panoramic views of Hua Hin’s coastline; and Beach Society, a beach club that will host monthly parties. Room rates start at B7,500. For bookings, visit goo.gl/BUwvhQ.
CHONBURI
Beach Burger Chonburi’s Bangsaen district is getting in on the food truck action. Parked right next to the beach, The Junk Food Club (093-2362624, www.fb.com/thejunkfoodclub) is a spin-off of the popular Betta Cafe x Beach. Under the slogan “Who cares about fat?” the truck rolls out hotdogs (B60) and burgers (B180) with an emphasis on black buns and oozing cheese. You’ll have to check their Facebook before heading to the water, though—after recent appearances at Wonderfruit festival and MBK in Bangkok, the truck will move to Rimpha Festival in Saraburi this Feb 6.
AIRLINES
“Philip B. Hollywoods most trusted botanical brand.”
The New Euro Lufthansa’s long-haul low-cost airline Eurowings (www.eurowings.com) has finally re-launched to connect travelers between Thailand and Germany. The no-frills carrier’s Airbus A330 offers twice-weekly non-stop flights from the airline’s Cologne base to Bangkok and Phuket. There are three travel classes: Best, Smart and Basic, the latter of which doesn’t include any checked-in luggage or inflight meals. One-way tickets start at 199 euros for Basic (B7,800)—pretty impressive. After testing out some bookings, we actually did find this rate, though some prices can go as high as those from major airlines. From Cologne, you can connect with destinations all around Europe.
INDONESIA
Tree Tops We’re pretty excited to report that Sumba’s Nihiwatu Resort (www.nihiwatu. com) has three new drool-worthy treehouse villas. And they aren’t haphazard, simple-living treehouses, but super glam, not-cheap Mamole Treehouses, designed by German architect Walter Wagner (founder of the firm Habitat5), with interiors by big-deal names like Marco Scarani and Susan Colley. Each house has de rigueur carvings, antiques and Ikat prints. As for space, there are three bedrooms with beach views. Two of these circular villas have two-stories, with a lounge area on the ground floor. Even cooler? For a double-date group vacay, a bamboo bridge connects all of the treehouses together. And there’s an infinity pool and a lounging deck to share. The cost to stay in a three-bedroom villa is about B21,000, for two, with a minimum stay of three nights. Bear in mind this price includes all meals, non-alcoholic beverages and, thank god, Wi-Fi.

Race Ready Five upcoming runs and tips on how to prepare for them. HELLO KITTY RUN Jan 31, 8am. Makkasan Airport Link Station It’s all about Japan’s iconic cartoon character at this 5km run that promises fans both a healthy morning of exercise as well as plenty of limited edition merchandise. Registration comes with a Hello Kitty shirt, bag and medal. B790-1,000. Register at Thaiticketmajor. Bumrungrad Tip: Warming up properly but lightly before a run is crucial—start with a light jog and dynamic stretches for no more than 10 minutes. This gets your heart pumping and increases the blood flow to your muscles and tendons, making them more elastic and less prone to injuries.
CARE FOR CANCER 2016 Feb 6, 8:30am. Lumphini Park, Rama 4 Rd. Organized by Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel and the Thai Red Cross Society, this run aims to raise funds for the Genetic Cancer Research Center at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, offering 5km and 10km distances. B350-500. Registration takes place on the day. Bumrungrad Tip: Remember to also incorporate lowimpact workouts into your marathon training, such as yoga, swimming, pilates and weight-training, to make sure your bones and joints get a rest while still keeping your fitness level up.
RUN WITH ME Feb 14, 4am. Lumphini Park, Rama 4 Rd.
THE GREAT RELAY Feb 20, 5am. Suan Luang Rama 9 Park
Returning for its second year, this fun run focuses on bringing all the lovebirds out there together for a healthy Valentine’s Day. Couples can take their pick between 3km, 10km or 20km runs to take on together. B400-1,500. Register at bit.ly/1NMCqfP. Bumrungrad Tip: The best foods to eat while preparing for a race are lean proteins like chicken, beans, eggs and fish. A couple of days before the race, though, you’ll want to fuel yourself with pasta, potatoes, bread and fruit. Avoid processed foods, fats or anything fried altogether.
Gather your gang for this brand new team running event that challenges groups of two, four or six runners in a relay format. Each member of the team finishes a lap and passes on the baton to the next person until the group collectively completes a total distance of either 50km or 100km. B800-1,050. Register at bit. ly/1Rp2vZ8 Bumrungrad Tip: Training with friends keeps motivation levels up and makes getting out of bed to run less of a daunting activity. Keeping spirits up before and during a marathon makes a huge impact on energy levels.
RUN HERO RUN Feb 28, 6am. King Rama V Monument on Rachadamnoen Nok Rd. Throw on your best superhero costumes and join the Batmans and Spidermans taking over this fancy-dress run that offers 3, 5, 10.5 and 21km distances. It’s all for a good cause too— proceeds go to the Peace of Life Foundation. B500-600. Register at www.peaceoflife. or.th. Bumrungrad Tip: The majority of marathon injuries happen from pushing your body beyond its limit. It’s important to plan out the training for your marathon properly—a full marathon ideally needs 18 weeks of preparation with a gradual increase of distance as you get closer to the race date.

Pop Your Collar The red carpet doesn’t lie: choker necklaces are back! Here’s how to relive the ‘90s in style. By Vasachol Quadri
Style 3: Button it
Style 1: Go Bold Chokers dominated the runway as part of Dior’s spring/summer 2016 womenswear collection, only thicker and more bejeweled than the flimsy elastic things you may have worn back in high school.
If you’re not convinced by the above two styles, why not pair a plain smart shirt with a collar chain to add a little attitude to your look. Button done up or undone—both looks work.

CAFE
Hidden Treasure Nestled in a century-old Rama 5-era house, Farm to Table, Hideout’s new and bigger space may require some effort to find, but the end result is well worth it. Duck behind an old fresh market and you’ll find a cozy, contemporary-yet-rustic cafe that preserves the charm of the original building while playing up to the market location with vegetable baskets and metal food carts. The menu spans simple European dishes like roast chicken salad with housemade dressing (B112) as well as Asian desserts such as coconut rice dumpling paired with coconut-butterfly pea ice cream (B112). There’s also a slow coffee bar which serves French press and pour over (both B88-98) using beans from Chiang Mai. 15 Soi Tha Klang, 02-004-9771. Phra Athit’s new kid on the block takes pride in two things: fried chicken wings and gin. The kitchen at Wing N’ Thing rolls out sets of crispy fried wings (starting at B160 for six pieces) with a choice of eight dipping sauces, from Jack Daniel’s barbecue sauce and cheese to Thai-inspired basil caramel, tom yum mayo and “chili from hell” spicy sauce. Pay an extra B40 for sides like hash browns, onion rings or mashed potato. Other menu items include New Orleans wings (B160), bacon grilled cheese (B190) and tom yum kung thin-crust pizza (B300). The bar’s focus on gin results in refreshing cocktails like the Master Peach (B200), a blend of gin with peach schnapps, syrup, lime juice and a dash of bitters, served with popcorn. They also serve imported beer. Phra Athit Rd., 086-605-0158. on.fb.me/1QkeGVX
Though Little Sunshine Cafe’s food presentation, dishware and general vibe might lead you to believe it comes straight from Tokyo, the dishes at this new spot replacing Tiny Cup and Pastale Cafe are mostly comfort food with Thai twists. Ex-nutritionist and food columnist owner Utchima Sriprachya-anunt rolls out dishes like the not-so-creamy Norwegian salmon pasta (B195) and salmon fried rice (B175) accompanied by jaew spicy sauce. Coffee is sourced from Laliart while some of the baked items (croissants and muffins) are from Le Blanc. Don’t miss the housemade sea salt butterscotch blondie (B85), either. G/F, Suthavongs Place, 83/4 Wireless Soi 1, 081-725-7897. Open Mon-Sat 9am-4pm. BTS Phloen Chit. on.fb.me/1RQxy0L
Kukkuuk Yakiniku, the Japanese restaurant known for its grill-ityourself stoves at Do Not Disturb nightlife complex, has expanded to DND’s second floor with a new space offering shabu shabu sets. Easily big enough to share between two, each set features your choice of wagyu beef or kurobuta pork accompanied by a sweet aromatic soup made from stewed crab meat and pork bones, and served with Enoki mushroom and shredded cabbage. Customers also have a choice of soba noodles, Japanese glass noodles or rice to complete the meal. When combined with the original recipe sauce, consisting of soy sauce, yuzu citrus fruit and freshly grated wasabi, the tender taste of the boiled meat makes for one of the most authentic shabu experiences in town. 217/8 Ekkamai Soi 7, 094-446-6269. Raising the Bar Seven amazing new Bangkok bars you need to visit. By Vasachol Quadri Bricks & Bone
Rabbit Hole
Bon Bon Seenspace has had a little makeover. The front spot that used to be Mr. Jones’ Orphanage has been transformed into a sci-fi concept bar by the same old Fico Group—now shorn of mad genius Ashley Sutton. Bon Bon’s moody 19th-century steampunk design sure looks familiar, though. In contrast with the stark surrounds, the menu goes for vibrant Mexican cuisine with twists, such as kimchi pulled pork tacos (B140) and grilled Australian steak served with Thai nam jim jeaw (B460), plus frozen cocktails with lots of liquid nitrogen. The real fun can be had in the ice bar, where the temperature plummets to -13 degrees Celsius. Gather a group of five and enjoy unlimited free-flow herb-infused vodka for 10 freezing minutes (B300). There’s also a ping pong table. Seenspace, 251/1 Thonglor Soi 13, 02-185-2378. www.fb.com/ BonBonBarAsia
Chi Ultralounge After closing down in October 2013, the legendary Bed Supperclub is back. Or at least the building is. The avant-garde spaceship building has been relocated to Sukhumvit Soi 13, just a few steps away from the original spot, and reborn as Chi Ultralounge by designer Daryl Scott (Mystique and The Tunnel). No longer white and futuristic, the good old building is now decked out in trending Chinoiserie style with a big dragon head inside the clubbing room and the shape of the bar now representing its body. The layout inside keeps pretty much the same format as before, with a lounge room with seats on the second floor for the not-yet-launched restaurant and a clubbing room on the other side. Expect Soi 11 resident DJs like DJ Octo and electro house on the sound system. 32/8 Sukhumvit Soi 13, 02-102-0013. BTS Nana. Open daily 9pm-2am. www. fb.com/ChiUltralounge
Rong Lao Phra Arthit Khao San’s sister street Phra Arthit Road has changed a lot this year as more of the abandoned shop-houses have been transformed into bars. This latest space called Rong Lao (an old Thai world for bar) looks like the area’s classic zero-attitude bar where you can open a square bottle of Sangsom (B240) or Blend 285 (B450) and share it with your friend while listening to live acoustic music. Local beers like Singha (B100/750ml), Leo (B110), Chang (B100) and Heineken (B140) are available in large bottles. The twist here is that they have an izakaya theme, with Japanese drinking dishes on offer like edamame (B40), takoyaki (wheat-flour dumplings, B70) and hiyashi wakame (seaweed salad, B60) as well as mains like tonkatsu (B110) and chicken teriyaki (B90). Phra Sumen Rd., 083-544-6364. Open daily 5pm-2am
Beam Thonglor’s nightlife scene welcomes its first club worth getting excited about in years this Jan 29, when Beam becomes one of the first venues to open in the hotly anticipated new 72 Courtyard complex. Joining late-night neighbors Badmotel (across the street) and Mellow (next door), the club offers a more minimal, warehouse style experience that keeps things raw, casual and loud, with state of the art sound and visual equipment. The lounge area, dubbed the Dalmatian Room, promises easy-going electronic beats (think Flume, Disclosure, Jamie XX and James Blake), while the main room upstairs brings qual-

ity, energetic, deep house and techno tracks from live DJs. Here, you’ll also find Asia’s first “body-kinetic” dance floor that shakes vibrations into dancers’ feet—meaning you’ll literally be able to feel the rhythm inside you as you dance. After two teaser nights in December featuring Jacques Greene and Alex From Tokyo, the club is now set for their official soft launch party this Jan 29 (Friday), when it welcomes Dutch DJ and label owner Tom Trago to take over the stage with the best of his house and techno tracks. He’ll be supported by Marmosets, Mendy Indigo, NT66 and Nudsko. 1/F, 72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-392-7750. www. fb.com/beamclubbkk
Bricks & Bone
Bon Bon
The Rama 9 area has welcomed a new bar for serious cocktail drinkers, run mainly by bartenders from Vice Versa and the Drinks Academy family. The American-themed Bricks & Bone specializes in bourbon-bassed craft cocktails influenced by US history, such as the Texas (B285), in which bourbon is mixed with rum, vanilla, butterscotch, Amaretto and ginger ale, and served in a beer glass covered by a leather patch for that cowboy touch. To eat, try the hot and spicy barbecue ribs (B350), wings (B125) or pulled pork burger (B200). 2 Muban Seri 1 Soi 10, Rama 9 Soi 41, 091-040-5174. www.fb.com/ Bricksandbone
Rabbit Hole Thonglor’s latest speakeasy bar sits between Soi 5 and 7. There’s no proper sign out front so look out for the wooden door between Ainu Japanese bar and Ramen Ajisai. Step inside and you’ll find a charming red-lit narrow bar with a huge rose gold booze rack behind a marble bar serving a solid mix of drinks that breaks the monotony of Thonglor’s typical bars. Two veteran bartenders from the Diageo World Class stage man the space, focusing on classic drinks with technical twists and infusions. There’s plenty of variation on the spirit shelves, with a good number of Scotch, American and Japanese whiskeys available by the glass or bottle. Don’t miss their White Truffle Martini (B450), which they make using a process called “fat wash.” White truffle oil-infused Tanqueray Gin is chilled to -18 degres Celsius then served straight into a martini glass washed with dry vermouth. The oil is skimmed from the top before the drink is garnished with an olive. They don’t serve any food, so be prepared before coming for a drink. 125 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (between Thonglor Soi 5 and 7), 081-822-3392. Open Tue-Sun 7pm-2am. www.fb.com/rabbitholebkk

Rong Lao Phra Arthit
Wing N’ Thing This other new space on Phra Athit Road offers a solid drinks list for those who want to move on from frozen kamikaze. Gin and rum dominate the bar, resulting in a refreshing drinks list including highlights such as the Master Peach (gin, peach schnapps, syrup, lime juice and bitter served with popcorn, B200). We also like the savory Bacon Blah Blah (B230), which uses bourbon mixed with lime juice, syrup, egg white and bacon oil, topped with grilled bacon and lemon peel. There’s also a neat list of classic gin tonics made using syrup twists, like the Gin Rose (B180), in which rose syrup is added to the gin and tonic and garnished with rose petals. As you probably guessed by the name, trhey sell some incredible fried chicken wings, too. Phra Sumen Rd., 086-605-0158. Open Tue-Sun 4pm-midnight. on.fb. me/1Va1rGL

Amantee (B55)
To our surprise, the croissants at Amantee, one of the city’s most devout baguette barons, don’t deliver the delicate pastry work we were expecting. The dense interior hiding below a thick dark crust seems more like brioche than pastry, with no discernible layers in the dough. Nevertheless, it packs a wonderfully buttery flavor. Verdict: A bread master’s croissant 2240/12-13 Chan Kao Rd., 081-814-0920. Open Tue-Sun 7am-7pm. www. fb.com/amanteebkk

Amatissimo (B65)
The thickest and shortest of the lot might look a bit weird but the taste is there. It ticks every box for the kind of decent if unremarkable croissant—a bit buttery, a little flakey, not too dry—you find at hotel breakfasts. Verdict: Your average croissant, done right 127, Srinagarindra Soi 55, 085-482-9977, 081-898-0070. Open Tue-Sun 9am-6pm. www.fb.com/AmatissimoCaffe

Big C Extra (B49 for 4 pieces)
What surprisingly won our last croissant taste test back in 2013 has gone seriously downhill. One taster marked it out straight away as pre-frozen supermarket fodder—soft, sad looking and a long way from fresh, with a taste as lackluster as its appearance Verdict: We assume the Carrefour people played no hand in this one
E
Calin Cafe (B70)
The most airy of the lot has nice layers that break apart and flake as a good croissant should. Sadly nothing much stands out about the taste. Verdict: A passable mess-maker G/F, Eight Thonglor, Sukhumvit Soi 55, 081-586-7305. Open daily 8am-11pm. www.fb.com/calincafe

There’s a lot going on with this one. Some smell seaweed, others even mushroom in this unusually heavy and oily croissant. Though far from traditional, there’s still something plenty satisfying about the heavy-set, moist pastry with its caramelized underbelly. Maison Chatenet (B40)
We generally love chef Chatenet’s pastries, but his croissant underperformed in this test. The undercooked appearance lacks any eatme-now appeal and the oily aroma is a far-cry from the buttery notes we expect. Verdict: We’ll stick to the chouquettes and gallettes Le Rich Condominium, 557 Sathu Pradit Soi 41, 092-408-0308. Open TueSat 8am-5pm; Sun 8am-1pm. www.fb.com/MaisonChatenet

The weird looks give way to an even weirder, unpleasant taste. We think there’s something up with the fat they’re using, with one group of tasters saying lard and another group rancid butter. Yikes. Verdict: Stick to the bread

Maison Jean Philippe (B60)
Nicely puffed up and perfectly layered, this traditional crescent-shaped offering contains unexpected sweet notes—even a cinnamon quality. Verdict: Sweet surprise

We like this croissant for its delicate feel. It delivers on the flaky crust and layered interior which breathes out with a buttery aroma. Best of all, it leaves no trace of fat on the palate despite the rich, buttery taste. Verdict: The underdog

bites FOOD REVIEWS
Kyushu Jangara Ramen HHHH Japanese. 2/F, J Avenue, Thonglor Soi 15, 02-7129678. Open daily 11am-11pm. BB. F
One of Bangkok’s latest ramen chains imported from Japan comes from the Southern island of Kyushu, but most people know it from its wildly popular Tokyo branches where near-permanent queues snake outside. At its first Bangkok opening, you won’t find quite the same hoards of people—during our last visit there were just four tables taken, though half of those were by Japanese natives. The apparent lack of popularity however shouldn’t detract from what’s some darn fine tonkotsu ramen. In a space that feels more like a children’s play pen than a serious salaryman’s noodle haunt (think child-like crayon graphics and rainbow murals instead of bar stools and vaguely smutty comic collections), the kitchen dishes out a choice of four variations of different porkbone broths: original, miso, Thai spiced and “black” (flavored with mayu garlic oil).
Shio Yoshoku HHHH Japanese. 8/F, Emquartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-0036287. Open daily 11am-10pm. BB-BBB. Corkage B300. BTS Phrom Phong. F
This Emquartier opening specializes in yoshoku cuisine, or Japanese takes on Western dishes. Of its neighbors in the Helix Quartier, including Bella Rocca and Signor Sassi’s Nova Tearoom, Shio is the smallest and yet it gets the highest traffic. The young groups come mainly for the signature cheesecake, which is served in two Instagram-baiting forms: an individual serving-size of circular rare cheesecake (B160) filled with runny caramel, and the fancier frozen sphere, dubbed Snowball (B290), which is topped with caramel sauce and liquid nitrogen. The latter, frozen to an almost ice cream texture, is delicious. The mellow cheesecake is complemented perfectly by the biscuit and the salty-sweet caramel sauce. To our joy, it turns out most savory dishes are no less impressive. The Ratings

A portion of ramen starts at B180 for the original soup, but for that you don’t get many goodies hidden in your noodles. What you want is the “zenburi” bowl, which comes loaded with great big chunks of braised pork, a boiled egg and a dollop of salty, marinated cod roe. At B360, it’s a pretty pricey bowl of noodles, but those wobbling lumps of fatty meat make all the difference compared to your standard slithers of chashu. While the original stock is smooth and richly flavored, we also favor the garlicky black ramen, whose intimidating, heavy appearance disguises a flavor that’s actually quite refined, with unusual tastes of aniseed and chamomile poking through the salty broth. Kyushu Jangara also gets some of the basics right, from the delicate, wispish noodles to the strongly wheaty strain of green tea (B40 with unlimited refill). But outside of the ramen you won’t find anything remarkable, whether it’s the limply filled and rather chewy gyoza (B89) or the slightly-toogreasy chicken karaage (B110). Dessert, too, is a single option of red bean paste atop a mound of dangerously artificialtasting shaved ice (B60)—sweet and refreshing after a heavy bowl of noodles, but no culinary masterpiece. Is Kyushu Jangara better than Thonglor tonkotsu mainstays like Yamagoya and Misoya? Probably not, but it definitely offers something different if you go for that black garlic sauce.
TASTE THE DIFFERENCE AT ELEMENTS, AT THE OKURA PRESTIGE BANGKOK Executive Chef Antony Scholtmeyer invites you to experience a new menu of French cuisine with Japanese influences. Elements also offers a special ‘Rossini’ menu featuring Yakitori of Australian Wagyu beef and foie gras with black truffle sauce. menu covers hot and cold appetizers, salads, rice dishes, pizza, pasta, risotto and meat and seafood mains—all with apparent Japanese touches. The tofu teriyaki (fried tofu with crispy skin topped with mushroom, B170), for example, boasts a bold and creamy teriyaki sauce with an inviting sesame aroma. Likewise, the salmon tartare (B380), served in a sardine can with salmon roe, comes with a light and fresh character thanks to a touch of wasabi. Instead of arborio rice, Shio makes all its risottos using Japanese rice for softer and stickier results. The Green Risotto (B550) is so named because the rice is cooked with spinach. Topped with a piece of miso-marinated salmon, a 62.5 degree egg and a dash of yuzu seaweed sauce, the dish offers an intriguingly complex mix of flavors. Their take on the trending duck and waffles (B490) sees tender duck confit and buttery, crisp waffle come served with a rewardingly large plate of cheese-baked mushroom, sauteed onion, marmalade and yuzu hollandaise. There’s one major problem here, though: the pizza. While they’re generous with toppings—including lots and lots of cheese—the likes of the creamy spicy prawn pizza (B320) are a real mish-mash of flavors upon a thin crust that’s soggy in the middle. Take out the pizza, however, and Shio is a delightful journey into slightly weird territory, with nice service to boot.

OPEN DOOR
D’Ark at EmQuartier Thonglor’s coffee shop slash brunch hangout slash refined restaurant opens at EmQuartier. The buzz: Now half a year old, Piman 49’s stylish cafe has made a name for its quality coffee sourced from Australian roaster Di Bella and a kitchen helmed by two French chefs with Michelin star chops. This new outpost at EmQuartier reaches a wider crowd with its mall location while offering them a more backto-basics menu. The decor: D’Ark’s second spot feels more grown up with its dark wood furniture paired with the brand’s leaf-embossed steel motifs. The signature coffee cart is again present, as is the long communal table in the center of the room. Alternatively, pull up a seat outdoors facing the mall’s central courtyard and waterfall. (Pets welcome.)
24
The food and drinks: Executive chef Jeriko Van Der Wolf and pastry chef Joffrey Jacob’s new menu leaves behind some of the more out-there touches of the original menu while still capturing some of its creativity. The brunch section (available till 6pm) features eggy dishes like the Mornay eggs (slow-cooked duck eggs with in-house smoked duck, crispy potato galette and parmesan crisp, smothered in truffle Mornay sauce, B280) and breakfast burrito (with scrambled eggs, spicy chicken, tomato, avocado, bell pepper, lettuce and sour cream, B320). As for mains, the grilled blue river prawn (B430) gets its flavor from Eastern spices, while the duck breast Rossini (B790) sticks to classic French cooking. Some old-menu favorites include the smoked beef and burrata (B360) and duck-patty Jeriko’s sliders (B380), as well as the signature espresso tiramisu (B180) and D’Ark Opera
(deconstructed Opera cake with coffee ice cream, B220). Other dessert highlights include the simple apple tart (B360), baked a la minute. They also sell rotating wines (starting at B270 per glass) and craft beer. Why you should care: Pet-friendly, close to the BTS, creativity that doesn’t get in the way of good flavors—in many ways we’d take it over the original. Natcha Sanguankiattichai G/F, EmQuartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-003-6013. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Phrom Phong. www.darkoffee.com

NEW AND NOTED
Bao Down Rangsit's Hotto Bun (086-327-0271, www.fb.com/HottoBunThailand) has branched out to Tha Maharaj riverside mall as a permanently parked food truck. The owners are the chefs behind Spicy Shallot, a Thai and Japanese restaurant in New York, and here they add a few fusion twists to their selection of bao (Taiwanese buns, from B65). The crispy battered chicken option comes dashed with spicy mayo and seaweed flakes for a fusion Japanese touch. There's also a tasty tempura fish choice, while fries set you back B55. For dessert, they serve those same bao with either soy milk or green tea ice cream (B95).
Square Feast Jona Waffle's (2/F, The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17. www. fb.com/jonawaffle) Le Cordon Bleu grad owner specializes in overnight yeast-raised waffles. The result: a crispier crust, lighter
interior, and little trace of yeasty flavor. The plain waffle at B120 is just a starting off point for you to add ice cream (B55/scoop), fresh fruit (B20-50) and sauces (B40-60). Or go for one of their pre-prepared treats like the Lady in Red (original waffle with fresh strawberries, blueberries, yogurt honey, berry sauce and strawberry ice cream, B230). The drinks list features soda (B120), iced tea (B100) and virgin sangria as well as coffee from Roots (starting at B80).
Hotel Home With both standalone and mall branches, Water Library’s Chinese restaurant has now moved into a hotel with the opening of Hong Bao at Amari Watergate (847 Petchburi Rd., 02-6539000). This latest branch offers up all the same menu items only in a setting that feels a bit fancier. Don’t miss the oozing salted egg lava buns (B90) or the crispy Peking duck (B1,300). Aside from lots of homemade pastas, highlights from the dinner menu also include the Uovo asparagi e asiago (White and green asparagus, slow cooked egg, asiago cheese foam, B590) Carpaccio di gamberi (Red prawn carpaccio, prawn mayonnaise, orange gel, B830), Fegatini di pollo (Chicken liver pate on brioche bread, zibibbo wine gelatin, fresh leaves, B590) and Linguini ai gamberi di porto santo spirit (Linguine, bisque, deep sea south Italian red prawn, B 550). After its successful debut last year, S20 Songkran Music Festival will again take place this Apr 13-15. In big news for EDM fans, this year's festival will be headlined by Nicky Romero, the Dutch progressive house DJ responsible for global hits like "Toulouse" and "I Could be the One," a collaboration with Avicii. This will be his official debut in Bangkok. We're not particularly surprised at the scale of the announcement, though, as last year's S2O Songkran Music Festival saw awesome performances from the likes of Krewella, deadmau5 and Afrojack, on top of kickass water effects and blasting visuals. Early bird tickets will go on sale this Jan 29 at www.s2ofestival. com, where a full list of ticket types and prices will be announced. So far, we have heard that there will be single-day tickets available. Last year's VVIP packages went up to B100,000 per villa per day, so it will be interesting to see what's in store this year. SPOTLIGHT Peeraawayt Krasaesom, artist
My favorite Thai artist is… Chatchai Puipia, who focuses on fine art. His work is always fresh and impactful, with a clear sense of his unique style. My favorite art galleries in Bangkok right now are… BACC and Numthong Gallery. BACC is such a convenient one to travel to—I’ve visited it regularly ever since I was at university. I also like Numthong Gallery on Ari Soi 5. It’s a quality gallery that combines both international and Thai art, and the owner is both friendly and professional. These two galleries are always showcasing work with new ideas and techniques that capture contemporary art very well. One thing I love most about the Thai art scene is… it doesn’t have a very strict framework. Thai art has always taken inspiration from surrounding cultures like India, China and, more recently, Western countries. This makes it so interesting and easily adaptable to new ideas. Also, nowadays there are more and more Thai art lovers—both artists and art collectors—which is a hopeful sign for the future. One thing that bugs me about the Thai art scene is… many of us still believe that art has to be superior, technical, traditional, and carry a thought-provoking message. But we were all drawing and painting as kids and we called that art, didn’t we? I believe any expression that comes from natural imagination and creativity should be counted as art. Art doesn’t have to be difficult to understand—approach it with an open mind and ultimately you’ll learn that art is just something fun. In the future, I want to see Thai artists… be passionate enough to choose art as a sustainable career option. Or even if they are only interested in art as a hobby, I hope the passion is strong enough to last a lifetime.
Peeraawayt Krasaesom’s latest exhibition, Classroom, runs at the People’s Gallery (Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre) through the end of January. His collection of acrylic paintings on canvas capture portraits of iconic cultural figures including David Bowie, Madonna, Brad Pitt, King Tut, Ai Wei Wei, Lucien Freud and many more in an impressionist style.
BE GOOD Protect the Forest
This Jan 31, support sustainable activities to protect forest areas with People and Forests Fair, a day-long market plus workshop and discussion forum. The fair will host various booths selling arts, crafts, forest foods and local creations from forest communities around the country. At 1pm, Zcongklod Bangyikhan, editor-in-chief of A Day magazine, will lead a discussion forum titled “Forest protection begins with me” alongside a panel including green space campaigners, forest management experts and rural forest dwellers, who will explore how individuals can support forest communities. At 3pm, students can participate in an interactive workshop where teams will compete to come up with marketing ideas for targeting sustainable products to urban markets. The winning team gets an all-expenses paid bicycle trip to Bangkhao where they will learn about life in one of the last remaining forest areas close to Bangkok. 11am-7pm. Free entry.
