Open Letter to my Ex
Dear P, When we started to see each other, I’d been in a committed relationship with another woman since 2011 (yeah, I’m sexually fluid that way), but was growing increasingly exasperated with her overbearing brother. Y was hot, fun, laid back. But she wasn’t the smartest gal, and her life was a mess. Her brother had been kicked out of the country and she was trying to get some paperwork done to get him back in. Meanwhile, they had some dodgy rice scam going on. I tried to block it all out, but her every living moment became consumed by these two things: the brother, the rice scheme. Maybe she had other dreams at some point. But they were long gone. And so was our love. At that point, what I needed in my life was a real man. I briefly dated some old dude from Surat, but he was just as nutty (and dodgy) as she was. I’d had enough with the scheming, the lies, the endless squabbles. I didn’t want a lost decade. I wanted a guy who gets stuff done, who knows what he wants. The first time I saw you, P, you were wearing your uniform. “That’s it! A soldier! That’s what I need,” I thought. Sure, you were older—a far-cry from Y—but I needed that, the emotional stability, the authority. And at first, you were charming, witty, like everyone’s favorite uncle. It took me a while to get to know the real you. I’d ask something, and you’d always answer with a question, as if to say my own questions were dumb. You’d get angry easily. You’d have views on women that sounded like the 1960s. You didn’t care much for the environment. I only meant this to be a rebound relationship, something for me to pick myself up off the floor. I didn’t mean to be in this forever. This is 2016 and as far as I’m concerned, serial monogamy is the way to go. But somehow, you moved in and I sleepwalked into the whole thing. We’re married, you say. Really? I don’t even remember saying, “I do.” Now, when I mention divorce, you get so angry, it’s impossible to have a rational conversation. You keep saying I need to adjust my attitude. You say you’ll talk to your lawyers, who will draft something, and that it should be done by December 2017, so that I can review it, but that none of this would really be in effect for another five years. You say it’s for my own good, that you saw me get hurt by Y, that you’re not going to let me throw myself into a new relationship without keeping an eye on me. I’m not a child, P. We had some good times, but you need to pack up your stuff. I’d hate to see that pretty uniform on the sidewalk along with your collection of Suraphol Sombatcharoen records. Not only do I need those divorce papers, but after it’s all said and done, you need to promise you won’t hang out in front of my house. Love? P.T.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: UberMOTO
Not: GrabBike
Just as one motorbike taxi app launches, another gets shut down. While Uber is promising to revolutionize the hassle-free mode of transport with the hassle of booking a driver in advance, the Department of Land Transportation is calling time on GrabTaxi’s own call-a-bike service. Private motorcycles, it says, should not be used to carry passengers. With precisely no people having used GrabTaxi ever, the news was met by a citywide shrug of the shoulders.
INTERVIEW
Hot: Bike booths
Not: Phone booths
TOT’s effort to turn one Bangkok telephone booth into a “Bike Repair Station” is the most awesome thing we’ve seen since Dear Leader rode that motorcycle in an orange cap. For the half dozen people who actually use their bikes to commute and not just park up outside cafes, we’re sure it’ll also be super useful next time they get a flat in that one very specific spot on Chaengwattana Road.
Hot: LV models
Not: Balenciaga bags
Thailand has really been making its presence felt in the world of high fashion. First there was the temple boy turned Louis Vuitton model in Kanchanaburi (see goo.gl/1YlwoL), then the impact our stripy plastic bags had on the runways of Balenciaga, which provided Nation TV with its customary quota of one story that’s total bullshit per week. The channel reported straight-faced about how Georgian designer Demna Gvasalia got the idea from a childhood spent flogging tat on the Myanmar border. Tune in next week to find out all about how Mae Sot has been named the new culture capital of the world.
Hot: Unhealthy health Not: Health food food We’re right on board with healthy food when it’s done like at Broccoli Revolution, where the only revolution going down is transforming broccoli from a superfood into something that’ll stop your heart beating. It gets fried, covered in sweet sauces and slapped between complex carbohydrates for a range of dishes which are all thoroughly delicious and the kind of thing we’d like to see more of from this city’s health cafes. For those into self-punishment, however, we’ve rounded up a more credible list of health-food purveyors on page 20.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Dr. Narumol Sriyanond, 62, recently won five awards including Best Director and Best Story at the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards (Hiida) for her new film Elephants in Motion: Tales of Life Transformation. Telling the story of Thailand’s mahouts and the deep bond they have with their elephants, the documentary is Dr. Narumol’s first film since her 2011 debut Building for Life: Moving AIDS to the Positive Life was selected for the Canne Film Festival. Why did you choose captive Thai elephants as your subject? A good documentary should look for a story or angle which no one has looked at before. I live between New York and Thailand, and see how Thailand is always judged from a Western angle, even by Thais, who see that we torture these animals to work for humans. I wanted to tell another side of the story, about the deep bond between Thai people and elephants and how we exist together. It’s part of our history. The elephant is our true national treasure. Whereabouts did you shoot? My dad used to be one of the heads of Forest Industry Organization (FIO) 40 years ago, which is how I got to know the bond between elephants and mahouts, so I started from there. I also went to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center under Royal Patronage in Lampang to show how we treat wounded and old elephants, as well as to Surin and other provinces in the South where elephants are used for tourism and logging and live with Muslim people harmoniously. Your film gives a very positive look on the relationship between elephants and their handlers. Surely get in the loop
bkmagazine.com
there are many incidents of mistreatment, too? There are good and bad people in every profession, and that goes for mahouts, too. The elephant is a very intelligent animal. There was one case of a ferocious elephant named Arisman who killed at least two mahouts that had treated him badly. If this case happened in the West, they would kill the elephant for sure. But here, we treat elephant with love. We even have the world’s first elephant hospital where conservationists tried to heal Arisman’s mind. Now he lives happily with another mahout who loves and respects him. They now work together in the South. I want to show the world that we have learned to live compassionately with elephants for so long. Which cases touched you the most while filming? In the five years it took me to finish this film I encountered a lot of extraordinary stories. There was one case of an old man named Lung Sui living with a blind and crippled elephant named Boonpradap. They had been together since Uncle Sui was just eight years old. They were never apart. One time, Uncle Sui got so drunk he passed

out on a dirt road near where they worked on a logging site. Instead of wandering off, Boonpradap stood over him and used tree leaves to fan insects away for hours until he woke up. Sadly, Boonpradap died last year after drinking polluted water. Is there a chance that your documentary will be shown on Thai television? I created it to air on digital TV as a one-hour documentary, but I really hope executives at Thai TV channels do show interest in this film and buy it to air as they do with Korean and American series. How do you feel about women’s position in the Thai filmmaking industry? It is really dominated by men. Yes, there are many more women working in the industry than in the past, but still we are underrepresented. I want to encourage women to do more, to look for movie projects and documentary topics which interest them; to find the right angle and speak out. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

PEOPLE OF THE OFFICE Meet the characters who everyone working in a Bangkok office will know. By Bonnie Sananvatananont. Illustrations by Panita Thiraphapong
THE ONE WHO EATS REALLY, REALLY SMELLY FOOD
THE PANTIP ADDICT There’s a reason she chose that desk up against the wall so no one can see her computer—and it’s not for peace and quiet while prepping spreadsheets. The hunched shoulders and face inches from the screen are tell-tale signs of an employee lost in the deepest recesses of a Pantip beauty thread.
You know it’s lunchtime when she unclips that tupperware box and releases “the smell.” Don’t expect it to ever be a salad or simple fried rice in there. Nope. It’s som tum pla ra, day-old kao mun gai , laab ped and kanom jeen nam ya or nothing. Pray you don’t have to sit next to her in the next meeting.
THE LUNCH INDULGER Lunch break to this girl doesn’t just mean a quick trip to the khao gaeng shop downstairs. It’s a two-hour event involving an Uber to the other side of town, a Greyhound Cafe, and an old friend she worked with at her last job. Not cool.
THE FARANG He first stepped foot in Thailand for a yolo gap-year and fell in love with beaches, Khao San Road and Leo beer. But things are different now. He dresses well, he has responsibility, he’s happily married to a Thai woman. For the third time. Brownie points among co-workers for every luk-krung baby he brings to the office.
THE ONE WITH ALL THE CONNECTIONS You’d hate him… if you didn’t need to ask him for so many favors. He got you into Wonderfruit, he can get you tix for Kolour in the Park, heck, he even has a drawer stuffed full of free Au Bon Pain vouchers. The office needs people like him (though it’s best not to let him know it that often).

THE WOMAN WHO DRESSES LIKE A NINE YEAR OLD She wears the same clothes as Minnie Mouse, communicates exclusively in Line stickers and sits at a work station which looks like someone from Sylvanian Families puked on it. No one has any clue what she does, but having her round’s too adorable to care.

ADVERTORIAL
ALL PROs. NO Cons
1949
1950s
The iconic PRO-Keds have landed in Bangkok for sporty, retro good looks.
Along with his teammates on the Minneapolis Lakers, George Mikan, one of the original “big men” of basketball, wears the PROKeds’ high-top Royal on his way to the NBA Finals.
Launched in 1949, PRO-Keds was quickly embraced by basketballers in the '50s, and then the New York hip hop underground in the late '70s. Before, you had to order your PRO-Keds online if you wanted a pair in Bangkok. But this March, Ikon Shop is launching a much coveted PROKeds spring collection. Originally, PRO-Keds was aimed squarely at demanding athletes. Today, they’re a favorite from the stadiums to city streets for their simple, sturdy yet stylish look. With a long history and tasteful updates, PRO-Keds are classic kicks with a twist. PRO-Keds will be ready for the streets of Bangkok this March 15th, available exclusively at IKON shops.
1970s PRO-Keds becomes the shoe of choice for ballers in New York, and quickly becomes a style icon of the hip hop community.
PRO-Keds launches. The high- and low-top basketball canvas shoes already feature the distinctive red and blue “powerstripe” on the toe.
1980-1990s While the brand is still popular on basketball courts–and even gets endorsed by the legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard–its rich heritage makes it a must-have with the fashion crowd in Japan.
2000s-Today With limited editions and edgy collaborations, PRO-Keds' cult status just keeps growing. And you can finally get PRO-Keds in Bangkok, at the IKON shop!

cover story THE HIPSTER
THE REALLY FIT ONE
His clothes are a perfectly color-coordinated vision of perfect monochrome perfection: trousers cut just above the ankle, pens poised in pocket of Oxford shirt, and B200 thick-rimmed Chatuchak Ray-Ban’s disguising the guilty little secret that he does in fact have perfect vision.
While you can hardly muster the energy to wake up in the morning , he manages an intense Crossfit session before work, eats quinoa at her desk, and even says no when someone comes back from lunch with moo-ping. MOOPING! (Seriously, how do these people live?)
THE PARALLEL YOU FROM ANOTHER DEPARTMENT For all your working lives have to do with each other you might as well work in a different universe, let alone the same office. And yet she’s always... there: changing trains at Siam, walking to the coffee station, enduring pregnant silences from hell in the elevator. You hope that one day you’ll know her name, but this thing’s gone on way too long for you to ever ask.
THE ONE WHO ALWAYS HAS A HANGOVER Her screen is adjusted to the lowest brightness, she’s got a liter bottle of water next to her, she moves slowly and is annoyed at everything. She was at Dark Bar last night. And Parking Toys the night before that. And Dark Bar again the night before that. And Parking Toys the… you get the picture.
THE ONE WHO NEVER HAS A HANGOVER They party just as much as the one who always has a hangover. You know they do! Why? Because you’re the one who always has a hangover. So why can they hold a presentation together and you can’t? This, unfortunately, is the shit-show called life.
THE PERSON WHO IS NEVER AT THEIR DESK. EVER. Quick trips to 7-Eleven and smoke breaks are the only reason she comes to the office at all. You’ve heard rumors that she got in at some point today, but it’s 2pm and her desk still looks as empty as Yodpimarn River Walk.
THE BOY WHO WAS BORN TO WORK IN MARKETING He wears glasses that look like barcode scanners, talks in words which only an ISB kid turned Maryland business grad would understand, and has a Rolex which definitely wasn’t bought on any salary your company pays. After work, find him in Vesper using that same business speak to not get laid.

Cape Plenty Finally, you just might be able to afford a night at Sri Panwa. The luxury resort has just opened 30 pool suites at B17,600/night versus B28,000 for the original villas. In keeping with the resort’s tropical contemporary style, The Habita consists of 30 pool suites and penthouses, each equipped with its own private infinity swimming pool. This part of the resort faces west, so you can expect private views of the sunset against the pristine Andaman Sea. On top of that, Habita also features two casual dining spots. Inspired by the island’s strong Sino-Portuguese heritage, Baba Chino serves up creative Chinese dishes that range from dim sum to Guangdong-style food, (open 11am-2pm and 6pm-10pm). Guests can also enjoy seafood and meaty grilled items on the sunbeds by the new waterfall forest pool, straight from the kitchen of Baba Hot Box (12pm-6pm). At the moment, low season rates (Apr 17-Oct 31) for Thai residents start from B13,400/night for the pool suite, while high season rates (Jan 11-Apr 16 and Nov 1-Dec 19) start at B17,600/night.
HUA HIN
Beach and Town Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa (032-904666, goo.gl/9Mtkx6) is that rare thing: a “Hua Hin” resort that’s actually in Hua Hin. Set right on the beachfront in town, the resort’s 322 rooms blend contemporary design with Thai touches referencing HM Rama VI’s nearby summer palace. If you’re looking for romance, the huge lagoon-shaped swimming pool even features an adults-only zone. Meanwhile, restaurants roll out fresh-baked pastries (Siam Bakery), Thai classics (Amber Kitchen) and seafood (Big Fish). There’s also a beachside bar offering sweeping ocean views. Opening rates range from B4,499 for superior rooms to B19,999 for the presidential suite, which comes with a private whirlpool. Packages that include a 60-minute massage at the onsite spa start at B5,299.

KHON KAEN
We’ve found a shop in Khon Kaen selling tasty local produce—juices, strawberries, and addictive laab-flavor cricket crackers—most of it cute enough to make great souvenirs. And design geeks will be all over its stunning architecture, courtesy of of local architect firm S Pace Studio. Agro Outlet (097-214-1209, www.fb.com/ agrooutletkku) is not your average OTOP or farmers’ outlet. Located right in Khon Kaen University, the store takes its design cues from the university’s logo featuring Phra That Phanom, Isaan’s most revered pagoda. The shop is part of the university’s Faculty of Agriculture and offers lots of local food including low-cholesterol eggs, Gai Si Mok (a mixed breed of black and local chicken) and the university’s famous three-color organic rice. You can also find more products from farmers around Khon Kaen and other Isaan provinces such as herbal soaps.
VIETNAM
In the Pod Don Mueang is not the only airport with its own batch of new “sleeping boxes.” Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport has also just unveiled some pretty fancy SleepPods. They may look like vending machines from the outside but these bright wooden rooms are surprisingly roomy and come with comfy bunk beds and space for luggage. Rates are charged in 1-5 hour slots, starting at VND130,000 (B206) per hour for a single room and VND150,000 (B238) for twin room. For 24-hour stays, it costs VND 650,000 (B1,032) and VND750,000 (B1,191), plus taxes. Book in advance for cheaper prices at goo.gl/KfVFU1. These sleep pods will be offered for free to passengers whose flights are delayed or cancelled. Try it out now with a free onehour stay between 12:30-1:30pm daily, through Dec 31.

Bite the Bullet The Royal Enfield Bullet is the world’s oldest motorcycle in continuous production since 1932, even if that production shifted from England to India in the ‘60s. And with the opening of a new showroom on Thonglor, it’s finally been made available in Bangkok. At B179,800, it’s not only a rather cheap 500cc bike, it’s also one of the most authentically retro. For an extra B20,000, we’d pick the Classic Chrome model, a debauchery of shiny metal that harks back to motorcycles’ golden age; but cafe racer hipsters will swoon over the Royal Enfield Continental GT (535cc, B219,800)—just don’t expect to outrun any Japanese 500cc bikes. 842 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 02-381-8810

The city’s latest serviced office space has landed right in the middle of Sukhumvit Soi 26. Soho offers private offices to rent for groups of 3-12 people across 500 sq meters of minimally designed white space. Don’t go looking to just drop in for the day and plug into a hot desk, since here space is rented on a monthly or yearly basis, with each office getting access to two meeting rooms and a shared green space for leisure time. The location is also pretty perfect, with BTS Phrom Phong and K Village close at hand. Prices start from B25,500/month for a 3-people room to B85,000/month for 12-people. 100/68 Warehouse 26, Sukhumvit Soi 26, 083-885-8883. www.sohobkk.com
There’s no stopping the prefab housing resurgence sweeping over America, thanks to the revival of modernism and soaring labor costs. Does prefab make sense in Thailand, though? Goodspace Prefab seem to the think so. They’ve rolled out a line of compact glass and steel pavilions that just beg to be plopped onto your dream plot of land in Kanchanaburi. At B550,000, the 27-sq-meter option is beautifully designed and comes with a 10-year warranty—but all the furniture and appliances drives the price up to B890,000 (or B720,000/ B1,190,000 for 38.5 sq meters). Fixie bicycle not included. www.fb.com/GoodspacePrefab, 098-983-0490
Have you spotted any T-Rexes on the back of pickups lately? They were headed to Dinosaur Planet, a theme park taking over the same space where we saw Artbox Market late last year with a whole host of prehistoric-lizard-based family fun. When it opens on Mar 25, the B500-million attraction will offer eight different sections ranging from kids’ dino rides to edutainment to live shows and theme park rides like the Dino Eye (B200). Admission is B600 per adult and B400 for kids. Unless they’re under 90cm, in which case it’s free. 544/1 Sukhumvit Rd., 02 833 2209. Open 10am-10pm. BTS Phrom Phong

CAFE
Grab and Go The fourth branch of the chic Scandinavian brunch and coffee spot Rocket comes in the form of a quick “grab and go” pit-stop at Thonglor’s 72 Courtyard community mall. Alongside the always-quality takeaway coffee, the food menu at Rocket X has been condensed to suit the express style, including salads, sandwiches and various breakfast pastries. On top of the newly-launched bagels, you can choose from sourdough rye bread, baguette, croissant or tortilla wrap to go with fillings like B.L.T (house-cured bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, maple and black pepper creme, B140), salmon x eggs (house-cured gravlax, scrambled eggs, spring onion and sour cream, B175) or PB&J (banana-peanut butter spread and mixed berry jam, B145). There’s an emphasis on healthy bites, too—try the chocolate chia pudding (B135) and berry granola (B135). Coffee starts at B80, while there are plenty more drink options including cold-pressed juices (B125) and water (B35), which comes in the brand’s own stylishly designed tetra-paks. Some inside and open-air seating is also available. G/F, 72 Courtyard, Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-635-0404

This Apr 1-2, chefs Duangporn Songvisava and Dylan Jones of fine Thai restaurant Bo.lan collaborate with Singapore’s Malcolm Lee, the young chef behind Singapore’s Candlenut, the island’s highly-touted Peranakan (straits-Chinese) restaurant. The Exclusive Four Hands Dinner highlights food which blends Chinese and Malay heritage, like pong tauhu soup (semi-clear bisque with a river prawn and crab meat ball), charcoal-grilled seabass with spicy petai beans and wok-fried king tiger prawn with garlic and buah keluak (Indonesian black nut) sambal. At B3,500, you’ll be covered with two sets of Bo.lan’s and Candlenut’s amuse bouche, five mains with rice, and the yummy buah keluak ice cream with chocolate and caramel. Chef Chalee Kader (of Surface, The Beer Bridge and Knock) takes his snacks seriously at this fun-looking pie place. The name Holy Moly (M/F, The Commons, 335 Thonglor Soi 17, 089-000-6659. www.fb.com/holymolybangkok) reflects the eureka moment when you bite into these gourmet pastry parcels and discover fillings as intriguing as Iberico pork char siu (B135), portobello mushroom with parmesan and truffle (B155), beef stew and egg (B155) and even a chunk of camembert with salted caramel (B155). The super-thin and crispy puff pastry is made using the best French flour and butter Chalee can get his hands on, and gets baked on-site all day long.

Farmfactory
Seven new spots putting the focus on veggies, superfoods and clean bites. By Natcha Sanguankiattichai Absolute Fit Food Cafe
Farmfactory Silom Complex’s new salad-only joint hails from Phuket. The organic veggies are sourced both locally and from overseas, and matched with the brand’s own range of dressings. Menu highlights include Avocobb (B159/ B239), which features a full bowl of crispy greens, carrot, sun-dried tomatoes, corn, pecan, avocado, quinoa, garlic bread and avocado dressing. You can, of course, also customize your own salad from B119. Freshly made cold-pressed juices are priced at B125. 2/F, Silom Complex, Silom Rd., 063-215-1015. BTS Sala Daeng. www.fb.com/farmfactorythailand
Dressed Following openings in Chidlom, Siam and Sathorn, the fourth branch of the vibrant American salad joint has arrived in the bustling business mecca of Asoke. Dressed at Exchange Tower provides the chain’s specialty salads, wraps, paninis, pastas and smoothies. There are also a few new items on the menu including the vegetarian panini (feta cheese, roasted red peppers, mixed oak, grilled asparagus and honey dijon aioli, B169), breakfast burrito (B149) and superfood smoothies (B99-129). 2/F, Exchange Tower, Sukhumvit Soi 21, 02-2582280. Brekkie Despite the name, Brekkie goes well beyond breakfast to serve healthier options of hearty dishes all day long. Ingredients like quinoa, avocado, spirulina, flaxseed, acai berry and chia seed dominate the menu in dishes like tom yum fried rice with quinoa (B285), avocado toast (B240) and acai smoothie bowl (B260) topped with
house-made granola and chia seed. It’s not a “clean food” joint, though. The menu also includes fries (B150), though these are made from home-cut organic sweet potatoes, and a Reuben sandwich (B340), featuring house-made sauce, sour-caramelized cabbages and rye bread. Don’t miss the whole-wheat pancake (B200), topped with ricotta cheese and coconut butterscotch. 6 / 9 S u k h u mv i t S o i 3 9, 0 8 3 - 6 5 6 - 6 1 4 1 . www.fb.com/brekkiebangkok
Patisserie Potager Seems there’s a new way to get your vitamins and nutrients. This Japanese dessert cafe specializes in cutesy treats made from fruit and veggies, plus all-natural, premium ingredients—resulting in half the calories you’d usually expect. Top picks include the black sesame rocket mousse (B145), yardlong bean cake (B165) and cauliflower tiramisu (B175). Don’t miss the genius red capsicum cheesecake (B165). They also blend no-added-sugar smoothies in combos like zucchini-mint-coconut (B135) and avocado-ginger-kiwifruit (B155). 1 1 1 / 1 T h o n g l o r S o i 5, 0 9 5 - 9 6 2- 0 3 2 4 . www.fb.com/potagerbangkok
Organika Thai spa brand Organika has taken over the top two stories above D’Ark in Sukhumvit Soi 49’s Piman 49 complex and transformed the space into a white-washed, botanical haven. One floor is dedicated to a spa, while the top-floor cafe features health-focused food created by Chalee Kader (of Surface, The Beer Bridge and Knock), including the hearty chicken garden salad (chicken breast, avocado, poached egg, tomato, beetroot and subtle Indian curry powder, B400). The
brand also plays around with scents in its own tea blends (B295/pot).

Absolute Fit Food Cafe One of the pioneers of Bangkok’s clean eating scene is the food arm of the Absolute wellness empire (also known for their yoga and Pilates studios). The low-calorie recipes include the superfood-heavy spicy zucchini quinoa salad and green curry quinoa risotto (both B280) as well as leafy options like Thousand Island salad with salmon (B220). There are also guilt-free desserts like blueberry chocolate tart (B180), made using spelt flour instead of wheat, with cocoa powder, blueberry, almond and coconut oil. On top of freshly squeezed juices (B150), tea from TE is available at B150/pot. 2/F, The Portico, Lang Suan Rd., 081-371-3721. www.fb.com/AbsoluteFitFood
Veganerie Concept
Organika
After debuting as a vegan dessert cafe a little more than a year ago, Veganerie now runs this diner, serving savory dishes that go beyond salads. Offerings include zucchini pasta (B250) with tomato sauce and vegan sausage, pulled pork burger (B290) made with mushrooms, and chicken massaman curry (B230) served with air-fried roti. Veganerie’s signature desserts are all here, too, like the cashew nut paste-based cheese pies (B140) and waffles (B165) as well as smoothies (B140-165). 35/1 Soi Methi Niwes (behind Benjasiri Park), 02-258-8489. BK ASKS Matthew Kenney American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney, 51, specializes in plant-based cuisine. In addition to his four restaurants in the USA, he also owns Matthew Kenney Culinary Academy, which has just branched out to Hua Hin at the Evason resort. There seems to be a real trend for vegetarian food right now. Why do you think that is? The public has started to realize that health all over the world has been deteriorating. It’s more than a trend now. I believe that vegetables will define cooking in a few years. Many restaurants are focusing on veggies as their main offerings with meat and fish as
20
the supplement. For now, if a restaurant has 10 main dishes then 4-5 may be fish, 4-5 meat and maybe just one vegetarian. Ten years from now, I foresee there being eight vegetarian choices. Many restaurants now offer vegetarian tasting menus. And mainstream chefs are also aware of this. Alain Ducasse stopped serving meat in his restaurant in Paris. That’s a big change. How do you convince people to eat plant-based food? For me, as a chef, I just try to feed them. I feel like if the food is beautiful and well-prepared, it’s going to speak for itself. My goal is to show people how good
vegetarian food can be and to let them make up their own minds. Why do you love plant-based food so much? As a chef, I care a lot about the flavor and beauty of food. To me, plant-based food has more flavors as well as beauty—colors and textures. It’s also so much healthier and has less impact on the environment. Meat farming has a lot of impact on the environment, so the plant-based approach is more sustainable. 9 Moo 5 Paknampran Beach, Pranburi, Prachuap Khirikhan, 032632-111. www.matthewkenneycuisine.com/mkc-thailand

Rabbit Hole
Black Amber
Rise of Thonglor
A-day-to-night guide on why you should revisit this happening neighborhood right now.
1. Lunch at the new foodie-focused community malls
7th Street
Roof Hideaway
One of the most-awaited community malls this year is The Commons (335 Thong Lor Soi 17, 089-1522677), a loft-like open-plan community mall from the siblings behind Roast cafe. The ambitious project works kind of like a food court, only a really, really good one, where you can choose to dine at hot foodie names like Peppina, Soul Food 555, Meat & Bones and Bao & Buns spin-off Xiao Chi to name just a few. All the food is served up in a shared outdoor space that’s more like a park or public library, under the cooling breeze of huge fans. Just across the street is 72 Courtyard (72 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 02-392-7999), a slick, open-plan mall that features all the coolest names from Sathorn Soi 12—Rocket, Lady Brett, UNCLE— as well as some soon-to-open new bars and clubs. Like The Commons, you’ll find acres of concrete, plants and steel, with as much space devoted to communal courtyards as to the venues themselves. Also joining them further up the street on Thonglor Soi 4 is The Maze. So far just a few dessert cafes have opened here, like Mocking Tales, a new dessert cafe specializing in icecream-based desserts inspired by fairy tales.
2. New independent spots for coffee, brunch and dessert
It’s not all about what’s in the new community malls. The cozy Warm Wood Cafe (137/1 Thonglor Soi 10, 02-714-9974) brings out all the cafe staples from desserts to coffees, while Dandelion (919, Sukhumvit Rd., between soi 49 and 51, 085-145-3181) specializes in hearty dessert and breakfast dishes plus monthly baking workshops. Around the corner, Toby’s (68/1 Sukhumvit Soi 38, 02-712-1774) is a photogenic spot for all-day Australian breakfast staples, specialty coffee and cold-pressed juice. Once Social Bar & Cafe (308 Thonglor Soi 10, 084-777-7322) also serves allday brunch and dessert, plus some outrageous “freakshakes.”

ously good drink. We recommend you kick off your night at Rabbit Hole (125 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 081-8223392), hidden behind an unmarked bar next to Ainu Bar, where you’ll find craft cocktails amid a hip, Thonglor vibe. Try the The Extra Mellow (B320), which uses Chivas Regal Extra, Frangelico, homemade kaffir lime lime syrup, fresh dill, citrus and egg white. Whisky lovers should head down the other side of the road for Black Amber Thonglor Social Club (Thong Lor Soi 6, 092-276-2772), a super-stylish gentleman’s bar with a focus on single malt whisky and rum tasting flights. We recommend the Chivas Regal flight, consisting of Chivas Regal 12 years, Chivas Regal Extra and Chivas Regal 18 years (B540). Or go for The Glenlivet 12 on the rocks (B290).
4. Boozy dinner at restaurants that take food and drink equally seriously
For a restaurant where you can have dinner while still keeping the party going, head over to Thonglor Soi 10 and check out the recently opened 7th Street Bar & Bistro (Thong Lor Soi 10, 02-714-8052), which has a cozy but sizable garden and serves a range of Thai and International “drink-friendly” dishes. As well as a strong list of imported draft beers, 7th Street also offers an equally solid list of cocktail to go with your dinner. Another must-visit spot for dinner carries on the tucked-away speakeasy vibe, this time in a rooftop garden on top of TO-B by Muse Thonglor (see no. 5). The charismatic, open-air Roof Hideaway (159/8 Thonglor Soi 10, 087 888 5599) specializes in dishes where East meets West, all served alongside equally excellent drinks.
5. Party at the reconceptualized TO-B by Muse Thonglor
End the night by checking out long-time Thonglor nightlife institution Muse’s latest addition, TO-B by Muse Thonglor. The massive bar offers live bands performing Thai and international covers daily, but we’d say the highlight has got to be the DJs, who get the night hopping with bass-heavy Billboard hits.
This street is no longer all about the massive drinking and dancing venues when night comes. Instead, you’ll find a surprising choice of speakeasy-style bars to hide yourself away from the crowds and indulge in a seri-

Ma Maison Comforting Thai dishes in a heritage setting that's hard to top. The buzz: Ma Maison is the new Thai restaurant at Nai Lert Park Heritage Home, a grand old estate in Nai Lert Park which opened to the public this year to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The decor: Despite the heritage setting, Ma Maison goes down a very modern route. It’s not actually in the house itself, but sits in a glass pavilion in the middle of the lawn. Inside, herringbone parquet floors meet with smooth mid-century-style dining chairs and artfully chosen bric-a-brac like stuffed birds and butterfly display cases. It’s all quite on-trend (if you block out the intense purple and leopard print wingbacks over at the bar) while not detracting from the heritage building nearby.
22
The food and drinks: The simple dishes come from the aristocratic Bodiratnangkura family’s favorite home cooking. Comforting Thai staples like deep-fried fish cakes (B180), massaman curry (B280), river prawns in red curry sauce (B1,200) and pad Thai (B350) are the kind of thing everyone wants to see on a menu, while you’ll also find a few more esoteric dishes. Their version of hor-mok (steamed fish curry pudding wrapped in banana leaf, B160) comes served in two wraps—one featuring the fish pudding and another with curry-paste steamed rice— while the mee nam Park Nai Lert (B240) sees crispy vermicelli soup with shredded pork and shrimp. A short list of Western dishes is also available, including stewed ox tongue with spa-
ghetti (B680), roasted chicken with butter rice (B450) and lamb shank stew (B850). Do ask for the young coconut sorbet (B120) to cleanse your palate. Cocktails are priced at B350 while wine starts at B300 by the glass. Why you should care: Finding a location for lunch as charming as Nai Lert Park is really hard in this city. At Ma Maison you have a kind of modern Thai, ladies-who-lunch atmosphere as well as tasty, comforting food. Natcha Sanguankiattichai Soi Somkid, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-655-4775. NEW AND NOTED
Doppel Dates Twin chefs Thomas and Mathias Suhring (previously of Mezzaluna at LeBua) have gone back to their German roots at this eponymous restaurant. Like Mezzaluna, meals are spread over a cacophony of courses, but the prices here are a whole lot more down to earth. The menu will set you back just B1,800/person for 9 plates or B2,500 for the full 12 courses—pretty tasty for fine dining on this level. They’re still in their early days and the menu is evolving, but we can say that the superb small plates include dishes which draw well beyond your typical German staples. Set in a beautiful modernist house on Yen Akart Road, it goes without saying this is one of the hottest new openings in town. Yen Akart Soi 3, 02-287-1799. www.fb.com/SuhringsHome
Safe Bet The menu at new food player Alphabet (198 Narathiwas Soi 3, 083-074-7403. BTS Chong Nonsi) reads like an A-Z of all Bangkok's favorite cafe dishes. Serving customers from 8am right through till
TABLE TALK 2am, it dishes out Western and Thai food as well as some booze offerings. Expect things like spaghetti aglio e olio with bacon and shrimp roe (B170), salmon steak (B280), ribeye steak with jaew sauce (B280) and pad krapao moo (stir fry of basil and minced pork, B160). Stay tuned, as the owner is adding a morning cafe menu and evening grill bar soon.
South of Ari Sanam Pao’s decrepit shop-houses seem like unlikely candidates for gentrification, but Older (212/5 Phahonyothin Rd., 087-5114466) is now serving Negronis and fusion food just beneath the BTS station. In warm decor that combines gentlemen’s club accents and the place’s crumbling concrete backbone, Salt’s original chef is back in town (Site, in Bangna, is closed) doing sun-dried kurobuta pork (B180), Thai-style salmon pate (B280) and pasta with cod roe (B280). Given the nightly live band, the place looks more suited to whiskey (B2,200 for JW Black) and soda than classic cocktails, but they can definitely mix a Vieux Carre or a Boulevardier (B280).
Plearnwan Panich Thonglor Soi 13, 084-541-4565. Open daily 8am-9pm. www.fb.com/plearnwanpanich The popular Hua Hin shopping center Plearwan arrived here in Bangkok under the name Plearnwan Panich, where it serves up old-school Thai snacks and breakfast bites. The decor adds to the vintage feel through lots of galvanized steel and reclaimed wood. Highlights from the menu include khai luak (half-boiled egg, B40), steamed bread with sangkaya (egg custard, B60) and sunny side up in pan (B80). Exclusive privileges for Citi credit cardmembers. Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen at Ippudo (B220-260)
Looks so wrong; tastes so right. The intimidating, heavy appearance disguises a flavor that’s actually quite refined, with unusual tastes of aniseed and chamomile poking through the salty broth. Order the “zenburi” bowl (B360), which comes loaded with great big chunks of braised pork, a boiled egg and a dollop of salty, marinated cod roe.
It comes in three variations—the traditional and delicate shiromaru motoaji (B220), the intense miso-and-garlicflavored akamaru shinaji (B220) and the spicy karaka-men (B260)—which allow you to choose the level of doneness of your noodles. Both the shiromaru (ultrathin straight noodles, pork loin and tamago) and karaka-men (curly noodles and tender pork cubes simmered in Ippudo’s special soy sauce) are less greasy than the offerings at Bankara and Kio, but still contain enough fat to deter anyone dieting.

Kakuni ramen at Bankara Ramen (B250) This one comes with a massive chunk of three-day-braised pork belly that literally melts on your palate. The restaurant is known for its fatty tonkotsu broth, served with perfectly al dente noodles and various forms of intense slow-cooked chashu. Delicious. Try The Manor, 32/1 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-6625162/3
Tonkotsu ramen at Chabuton (B245) The 2002 TV Champion -winning Chef Yasuji Morizumi’s tonkotsu chashu men has a slightly greasy broth that is packed with flavor, and the slender in-house noodles have that perfectly springy quality, served alongside three slithers of tender rolled-up chashu.

Special ramen at Menya Kouji (B230) Hailing from Sanuki prefecture in Ibaraki, Menya Kouji’s tonkotsu ramen is creamy and very earthy. The house-favorite Special Ramen features molten pork fat, slow-cooked pork-belly chashu and a boiled egg with a perfectly fudgy yolk. This guilty, cholesterol-fueled (but surprisingly palatable) pleasure is just too good to miss out on. G/F, 39 Boulevard Bldg., Sukhumvit Soi 33, 02-160-0112

SPOTLIGHT
Wittamon Niwattichai, artist
My favorite Thai artists are… some of the long-term veterand in the Thai art scene, such as Hem Vejakorn, Joompol Karnjonnintu, Kumnuan Chanunto and Jumrut Kiertkong. My favorite art gallery in Bangkok right now is… Bangkok City City Gallery. It’s the most innovative one that I’ve seen so far. But actually, I usually prefer to see art displayed outside a gallery. One thing I love about the Thai art scene is… the recent rise of the market-meets-art combination that is everywhere right now. It shows that things are on the way up and art is reaching more people. One thing I don’t like about the Thai art scene is… it’s still very limited in terms of style. There’s not much experimentation going on. In the future, I want to see Thai artists… be able to afford their own studio spaces, or for there to be more galleries and venues that want to support budding artists. This would help to foster more of an experimental art scene if artists have more support.
Wittamon Niwattichai’s latest exhibition, We Have Just One World But We Live in Different Ones, is a collection of prints, drawings and embroidery exploring the moments people share in their daily lives that confirm similarities among strangers. It runs at Rikyu by Boy Tokyo (45 Soi Sukhumvit 24, 02-115-5778) from Mar 24-Apr 29.

NIGHT BIKE MARKET
For the second year in a row, the creative Chula kids are hosting an arty street fair that spans across the university’s Architecture, Fine Arts and Arts faculties, featuring exhibitions, live art, independent food stalls and handmade crafts as well as live music performances by Bangkok indie acts. Don’t be put off by the fact that it’s hosted by students—it’s open to the public, and the turnout last year was impressive.
Our favorite riverside community mall plays host to the third edition of the Night Bike Market, which features organized nighttime cycling trips around the Old Town (Phra Nakhon Wonder Trip on Mar 26 and Zog Zag trip No. 2 on Mar 27), on top of a small selection of vendors. Even if you’re not a cycling enthusiast, you can still use this opportunity to return to this awesome part of town, which has been blessed with some interesting openings lately.

THE GREAT OUTDOOR POP UP EXPERIMENT
The team that turned Bangkok Docklands into hipster haven is experimenting in a new location. In line with the crew’s love for abandoned spaces, the next market is set to take place at Tha Din Daeng East Pier, featuring a river bar and terrace and an outdoor theater screening experimental films. The six-meter-tall “Rustic Warehouse” made of bamboo and iron steel will see food courtesy of The Kitchen Mess, Guss Damn Good, Blue Dye Cafe and more. They’re also promising live music performances on the “Experimental” stage, featuring Gym & Swim (Mar 26), Inspirative Band (Mar 27), X0809 (Apr 2) and Marathon (Apr 3). They’re introducing a “Neon Club” with live DJs when the clock strikes midnight—but we’ll probably just bring a few friends to chill under the stars. Mar 26-27, Apr 2-3. Expect live performances by mainstream acts Lipta, Lula, Jetset'er, Atom and many more. Food, DIY arty products, a HOBS’ pop-up bar, and plenty of parking space are also plusses. ZAAP ON SALE #6: ALOHA SUMMER
A shopping trip at Zaap on Sale is never that cheap (especially at the stalls in the VIP zone in the outer hall), but the organizers always manage to bring in pretty much all the online fashion shops that we know and love (which add up to around 400 in total), as well as a very fashionable crowd (they even have a lookbook of their customers). You’re not gonna go there for the food (but you don’t really need to). The fact that the space is massive means that it will be a much more comfortable shopping sesh, especially now that the summer heat has arrived. Apr 2-3. Royal Paragon Hall, 5/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd. BTS Siam.
