A fifth of Bangkok’s best restaurants are in a single hotel Tourists seem to have a real fetish for any restaurant in the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. You don’t even need to break out of Tripadvisor’s top 15 in Bangkok before you’ve encountered three of their dining venues—so that’s one-fifth of the city’s best restaurants, all in one hotel. Wow. Just wow. 7-Eleven’s new Hershey’s soy milk is not a health food The convenience store’s latest Instragram-baiting item is none other than Soyfresh Hershey’s flavored soy milk. But a closer look at the fine-print reveals this drink is definitely not for people who are lactose intolerant or on a diet. There’s a tiny warning on the package that the drink contains milk solids—a dairy-derived food additive—while the sugar content is between 18.5-23g, which makes for a whopping 140-160kcal total energy per carton. Darn.

72 Courtyard is meant to be viewed from Touche Hombre Have you been wondering why it took Amanda Levete, the architect of the V&A’s extension in London, to design the two big gray boxes called 72 Courtyard? The opening of Touche Hombre may have finally shed some light on this urgent aesthetic issue. You’re meant to look at her handiwork from the Mexican restaurant’s leather banquettes, when suddenly a magical play on perspective defies your perception of space. Not interested? Go anyway, and order Tommy’s Margarita, which costs only B275 and is “the only margarita recipe you’ll ever need,” according to GQ. Triple Pearl and Devanom are officially Bangkok’s best beers Yaksa Brewery (founded by Praset “Geng” Sritaborvornpaiboon of Niche BeerVille) gathered Bangkok’s beer bloggers and brewers last weekend to host the fourth edition of Beer Camp: Fightclub, and to crown Bangkok’s best beers. Over 70 labels joined the competition, with familiar name Triple Pearl taking the wheat title and new-wave brewer Devanom (the guy who started Thailand’s first hops farm) winning the IPA category. So now you know what labels to look for next time you’re at one of these bars: goo.gl/lBTrVx.
Monocle’s Tyler Brule designed a mall in Bangkok That’s what Sansiri is saying about Habito, the retail space amid its behemoth T77 complex. Don’t go just yet, because the shops aren’t open. But if it’s anything like his mag, we can expect a dealership for bulletproof stretch limos and things made by very old Japanese people who live in mountains.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Coffee negronis
Not: Coffee martinis
Can we take back what we said about Bangkok being at peak negroni? The one infused with coffee at Q&A is awesome, and so much less embarrassing than ordering a coffee martini. And they’re not the only cool coffee cocktails that’ll knock you sideways: see “Dusk Till Dawn” at Backstage, “Great Grey” at Owl Society and “Jet Lagged” at Evil Man Blues.
INTERVIEW
Hot: Multiple cards
Not: Mangmoom cards
The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning, or Otutupup, is going back on its promise of a one-card transport system by August. They tried, they failed, and now they won’t tell us if it’ll ever be ready. But hey, at least you can still use your Rabbit Card at McDonald’s.
Hot: MX4D
Not: 4D
Since 4D was lame, chances are MX4D—which is the same but with seats that bump up and down—will be super, super lame. But since the only thing in the cinema right now is Independance Day: Resurgence, at least it might make that experience in some way sufferable.
Hot: Maiiam Art Museum
Not: Artistic censorship
One of Thailand’s most ambitious ever contemporary art museums just opened in Chiang Mai with a retrospective of local artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s work (see page 10). However don’t expect to see his latest, critically acclaimed film, Cemetery of Splendour—that one he’s not even bothering to submit to our local censors.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Mano Laohavanich, 60, once called Phra Mettanando, is a defector from the beleaguered Dhammakaya temple, where the head abbot, Dhammajayo, is wanted for questioning by the DSI in relation to the Klongchan Credit Union scandal. Mano has not only been a vocal critic of Dhammakaya since breaking his connections with the temple in 1995, but has also known Dhammajayo personally since the 1970s. How do you think Dhammajayo’s case will resolve itself? I don’t think that he will survive this time, he will be caught and jailed. There’s no way to escape anymore. His days are numbered.
We have to first and foremost address the issue of money management in temples. It has to be transparent. We can create a system that manages money in transparent way.
There are so many conflicts within Thai Buddhism right now. What do you see as the cause? Monks are too wealthy. We don’t have a supreme patriarch and Somdech Chuang doesn’t deserve the position. He was my preceptor, I know him.
When did your conflict with Dhammakaya begin? In my first year as a monk I had trouble because Dhammajayo told the people that this young monk will replace him. So immediately I became the target of jealousy. I had to move out from Dhammakaya to live at Wat Ratchaorotsaram Temple in Bangkok. I later learned that Dhammajayo was founding a company with his own money, investing in land development. I was not comfortable with this at all. So I wrote him a letter stating that I disagreed with this; that it was wrong for a monk to get into business. One week later he wrote back telling me not to interfere with his personal affairs, just to concentrate on my studies [at Harvard University in England and Hamburg University in Germany].
If Dhammajayo is removed, how do you see the future of the Dhammakaya temple? The temple has to be reorganized. Then the ministry of Buddhism has to make a declaration and the case of Dhammakaya has to be well publicized as a bad interpretation of Buddhism. Many disciples will be charged with many illegal activities, and many monks will be defrocked. I still believe in the ministry of justice as there have been many cases of high profile and powerful people being jailed. Do you feel that the public’s faith in the institution of Buddhism in Thailand has been irreparably eroded?
1991 assassination of the abbot of Wat Pho, a Dhammakaya temple in California, at the hands of a Thai man. I had to travel back and forth between Thailand and the USA a lot and, during my time in Thailand, I found many families crippled from having to donate to the building of the huge Dhammakaya pagoda. I confronted the abbot again to tell him that his donations were breaking down families. Instead of answering my concerns, he just looked into my eyes intensely and asked me slowly, “Do you know who I am?” Have you received any threats? Yes, I’ve had many threats. I was followed by a blacked-out van very closely. I received emails that were not friendly and some that threatened my life if I didn’t stop what I was doing. If the Dhammakaya case eases up, will you go back to the monkhood? No. I will continue my religious work secularly. Interview by BK Staff
So, what made you drop out of Dhammakaya? My last straw came in 1995, while I was managing the case of the

Khao Lam Dam, Sangkhlaburi
Sangkhlaburi Why now: While many tend to stop at Kanchanaburi’s Sai Yok, those seeking a more adventurous hideaway should head to Sangkhlaburi. The sleepy border town near Myanmar is best visited in the rainy season, when a full Khao Lam Dam means lots of fun water-based activities.
Why now: For one, the low season offers massive discounts on rooms. That means you can take a romantic getaway for less and, when it rains, stay in and enjoy the misty mountain views from your room.

Head here: Sip wine and listen to the rain fall at Granmonte Asoke Valley (www.granmonte. com), the multi-award-winning vineyard led by Nikki Lohitnavy, Thailand's first female winemaker and a recent appearance in Forbes's inaugural Asia 30 under 30 list. They offer wine tasting programs and farm tours from B300, but we recommend going for a wine and dine package which starts at B950 at lunch or dinner. This season’s must-tries are 2015 Verdelho, which just won a silver medal from the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2016, and the NV Cremant Extra Brut, which won a consolation prize from the same event. To absorb some culture, visit Khao Yai Art Museum, which exhibits the vast contemporary arts collection of businessman Pongchai Chindasook. Architecture hunters will also want to stop by the quaint cottages and cafe of Birder’s Lodge (044-300-
Stay here: Granmonte Guesthouse (084-9041944, 081-622-6662, www.granmonteguest house.com) is offering 40-percent discounts on weekdays (B3,120 from B5,000), but we also like the look of the weekend Wine & Dine package (B8,680 per couple), which gets you one night in a deluxe room, two bottles of wine plus Thai or Western lunch, dinner and breakfast, from now until Sep 30. Nature lovers may want to book a room at the newly-opened Nhapha Khao Yai Resort (093-636-9999. www.nhaphakhaoyai.com), whose rooms are carved out of a disused quarry. Room rates are B8,000 for a villa and B12,000 for a grand villa. They offer 20-percent discount weekdays.

Head here: For some white-water rafting, choose from either the Songkalia or Ranti rivers which both flow into Khao Laem Dam. The former offers both tubing and inflatable boat rafts with the rapids reaching difficulty levels of 3-4. The latter offers milder bamboo rafting on level 2-3 rapids. Try Samprasob Adventure (034-595-050, www.samprasob. com). Other highlights include visiting submerged temples and walking on Uttama Nusorn Bridge, the longest wooden bridge in Thailand to Mon village. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Wiwekaram Temple, home to the gorgeous golden Buddha Gaya pagoda.
Stay here: Go Beyond Asia (02-630-9371, goo.gl/F5KrBO) offers a five-day tour staying at its lake house for B14,500 per person, which leaves from Bangkok. The two-level floating accommodation is the perfect spot to laze on a tube or kayak through caves and submerged temples. On board there’s a small restaurant and a bar with daily happy hours. Over the five days, the house moves to different parts of the lake offering amazing sunset views plus rafting and trekking tours to nearby villages. For a more budget option, there’s Ponnatee Resort (034-595-134, www.ponnateeresort.com), which offers shorter packages like a three-daytwo-night stay at B4,000 per person including food, room and rafting tour.

Head here: Newly-founded national park Hat Khanom–Mu Ko Thale Tai is home to stunning coral reefs and pink dolphins. Jun-Aug is the best time to catch this rare species due to low rainfall and clear waters. Take a day tour, which starts in the early morning when the dolphins approach fishermen's boats to feed on the small, unwanted fish. Stop by nearby Koh Nui, unique for its natural fresh-water well. Afterwards, check out Khao Puppa, whose curious limestone formations similar to those in Punakaiki, New Zealand, have earned it the nickname Pancake Rocks. Other marine attractions include diving spots at Koh Tan, Koh Rab and Koh Matsum. Try Nakhon Si Grand Tour (080-233-3322, goo.gl/0ZyFSv),
which charges B750 for a dolphin day tour and B1,950 for a diving tour. Now is also good time to visit the area's waterfalls, the best of which are Krungching, Ai Khiao and Promlok. Why now: Located in the westernmost part of the Isaan region, mountainous and relatively cool Petchabun can be visited year-round. It’s just welcomed a new resort that’s like something in the European highlands, while neighboring Phitsanulok province has plenty of rainy season activities to thrill adrenaline junkies. Head here: Phitsanulok is home to some of the finest white-water rafting in Thailand, along the Khek River from Jul-Oct. Flowing through Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, the river consists of 13-18 rapids at a difficulty level of 3-5. The 10km course takes three hours to complete and most resorts in the area offer rafting day trips. Meanwhile in Petchabun, you can go rappelling at the 30-meter-high Wang Tum Waterfall (Khaokho Explorer, 089894-9211, 081-985-2676). Phutubberk, Petchabun’s renowned winter mountain destination, is actually at its most beautiful at this time of year, when it’s surrounded by even
more mist. You don’t need to be religious to admire the unusual beauty of Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew, a golden pagoda surrounded by lush mountains. Stay here: Book a stay at the newly-opened Blue Sky Resort Khao Kho (02-247-7310-11, www.theblueskyresort.com/KhaoKho), an English country-evoking resort whose 30-rai garden features lots of seasonal plants, a giant maze, a vintage coffee shop and an alfresco vintage outdoor area. Rates start from B2,499, (weekday) B2,999 (weekend) for deluxe rooms. In Phitsanulok, try Wanathara Health Resort and Spa (055-293-411-4, www. wanathara.com), which offers rooms right by the Khek River at B1,650 on weekdays and B1,750 on weekend, inclusive of rafting tour. How to get there: Located around 360km from Bangkok, Phetchabun or Phitsanulok make for an easy drive or bus trip from Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2).
Chiang Rai Why now: Though Chiang Mai still gets most of the attention, this neighboring province draws people in with its slower pace of life and manicured farms, which are at their greenest this time of year.

To the North After much hype, Maiiam Contemporary Art Museum (www.maiiam.com) finally throws open its doors this Jul 4. Maiiam, which means “brand new,” sits in a converted 3,000-sq-meter warehouse in the historical craft district Sankhampaeng, a 30-minute drive east from Chiang Mai center. It will feature a mix of rotating and permanent exhibitions from the personal collections of Jean Michel Beurdeley and his late wife Patsri Bunnag, together with their son Eric Bunnag Booth (Jim Thomson’s international marketing director). Think emerging local artists and contemporary masters like the late Montien Boonma, Kamin Lertchaiprasert, Chatchai Puipia, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Navin Rawanchaikul, Natee Utarit, Vasan Sitthiket, Pinaree Sanpitak and Rirkrit Tiravanija. The opening exhibition is “The Serenity of Madness,” a retrospective of Chiang Mai-hailing, Cannes-winning director Apichatpong Weerasethakul called “The Serenity of Madness.” Entry is B150 ticket. It opens Wed-Mon 10am-6pm.
Into the Wild ADVERTORIAL
The newly-opened Pongyang Zipline & Jungle Coaster (092-973-8868, pongyangadventure.com) in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district has probably the best ride of any of Thailand’s zipline parks. The Jungle Coaster is a two-seater beast powered by gravity that snakes around the canopy on steel rails. Right now you can ride it for the promo rate of B150 (usually B300). Also check out the Quick Jump, a bungee-jump-like service where visitors fall to the ground from heights of 14 meters (B150 for ticket). For ziplining, they offer two packages at B2,550 and B2,050, but we recommend you go for the round-up promotion at B800 (normally at B1,550), which combines a 12-station zipline tour plus a Jungle coaster ride.

Nasha Laboratoire
Five Thai Women Designers Making Thailand Proud From fashion to furnishings, meet the kingdom’s female design talents breaking through internationally with local materials and timeless designs. Linda Charoenlab of Lalalove London
Thinkk Studio
Fashion designer and stylist Linda Charoenlab launched Lalalove as a T-shirt brand back in the early 2000s while studying at the London College of Fashion. Her unique designs were quickly picked up by Topshop on Oxford Street, London, which really kicked off her reputation. Since then, her work has developed from T-shirts into a full line of womenswear. Finally in March 2015, Linda opened her first flagship store at Siam Center (which has been followed by retail space in many leading department stores), bringing her international success back to her hometown, Bangkok. Linda’s designs use 100-percent ecofriendly fabrics (sourced both locally and internationally) which she mixes with unique prints in vibrant colors. You’ll love: Her digitally printed tees, jumper and swimwear. Get yours at: 3/F, Siam Center, 979 Rama 1 Rd. BTS Siam. www. fb.com/lalalovelondon
Nasha Mekraksavanich of Nasha Laboratoire Nasha Mekravanish is another designer who gained her reputation internationally before bringing her brand back to Thailand. A graduate of Bangkok’s Silpakorn University Interior Design department, she then moved to Milan where she achieved two more degrees in shoe and jewelry design at Ars Sutoria and Istituto Marangoni before establishing her brand in 2013. Her first collection premiered at Paris Fashion Week before being selected as part of Vogue Italia Talents 2013. Now the brand has arrived in Bangkok at Club 21 Thailand and many department stores. The unique, geometric shapes mix architectural construction with metal details, and are crafted from genuine exotic leathers like snakeskin, crocodile and stingray. You’ll love: Shroom Like a Mushroom, a box leather clutch with agate stones. Get yours at: 1/F, Siam Paragon, 991/1 Rama 1 Rd. BTS Siam. www. fb.com/nasha.accessories.official
Vatanika
Vatanika Patamasingha of Vatanika Vatanika’s new-wave Thai brand picked up immediately after first launching in 2011. Today, the brand’s unique and exotic designs are available in everything from evening gowns to workwear. Representing a strong, workaholic woman who’s also sexy and stylish, the brand joined the annual ELLE Fashion Week for the first time in 2012, and has since collaborated with global brands like L’Oreal and Diageo Moet Hennessey. Now, not only are Vatanika’s clothes available in many department stores in Bangkok, but she recently opened her first showroom in Paris. You’ll love: The cut-out stretch crepe jumpsuit. Pirada Senivongse Na Ayudhya of Found by Trimode Jewelry designer Pirada Senivonge Na Ayudhya has worked with The Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand, traveling around the country to help contemporize traditional products. The result is DeMark Award-winning pieces like Doipui, a modern redesign of a traditional Hmong embroidered hat, and Nakhon Ratchasima, jewelry made with buffalo, ox and yak horns. Seed Lite Water Library’s rusticated casual restaurant Seed has just announced new daylight opening hours (11am-midnight on week days and 10am-midnight on weekends), and head chef Pakapat “Jao” Sakyaso is celebrating with a new brunch and lunch menu. We really like the “Popeye and Olive” (spinach and cheese-stuffed French toast with olives, B210) plus standard picks like the breakfast burrito (B270) and Anytime Eggs (B250)—the restaurant’s take on eggs Benedict, served in a pot with toasted bread. On the sweet side, don’t miss “the Fluffiest Pancake” (B170) served with brown butter whipped cream, or Jao’s granola (B180) with yogurt and fruits. Chef Jao also bakes fresh rotating croissants, financiers and scones to go with a cup of espresso (B80), fruit juice or shake (both from B110). Gluten-free baked items are also available. 104 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 099-283-6363, 094-429-7777

Inspired by his hometown, Miami, Florida, chef Kip Oxman (formerly of Hemingway’s and Monsoon) presents what is called “Nuevo Latino” (New Latin) cuisine at Azul. This new interpretation of Latin food borrows flavors from Cuba and other Spanish-speaking countries. Expect the likes of Peruvian scallop ceviche (B240) and Cuban sandwiches (B240), as well as chili con carne (B360) and hamburgers (B380). The chef adds his own twists to certain dishes, including the use of crabmeat instead of red meat in the empanadas (stuffed pastries, B160) and delicious duck ropa vieja (normally stewed beef, B220) served with poached egg on a grilled corn cake. 16 Sukhumvit Soi 49, 02-662-6117. www. fb.com/azulnuevolatino
Ubiquitious seafood importer Thammachart Seafood zeroes in on lobster at its new kiosk at The Commons. The Lobster Lab serves freshly-caught lobster from either Canada or Maine as lobster rolls (B690) featuring 60g of lobster meat stuffed inside a housemade brioche, topped with a choice of New England-style mayonnaise, tom yum-inspired sauce or Mexican-style sauce and served with a side of fries. Whole steamed lobster costs B1,690 (700-800g) with garlic-butter or spicy seafood sauce. There’s also oak-smoked lobster salad (B690), lobster chowder (B290) and lobster spaghetti (B690). Refresh with a cloudy lemonade (B150). M/F, The Commons, 335 Thonglor Soi 17, 02-712-8197. www.fb.com/thelobsterlab
The photogenic new cafe on Thonglor Soi 14, Thinkin’ Outside the Fox, stands out for its three-story-high window facade and stylish loft-like design (courtesy of Party/Space/Design). Here, amid mid-century furnishings, you can enjoy baked items like flourless dark chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream (B185) made by the baker behind Rain Hill’s defunct Penguin Loves Chocolate, brownies (B185) and waffles (B195) while sipping hot cocoa (B130) served with a cookie on top. You can also shop for designer home, clothing and stationery items, either from the house-brand or from fellow local label Things to Make and Do. 416/3 Thonglor Soi 14, 02-390-2847. www.fb.com/thinkinoutsidethefox

NANDHINI SEHGAL, MANAGEMENT TRAINEE AT NESTLE
“My favorite restaurant is Punjab Grill at Radisson on Sukhumvit Soi 13. It’s a high-end restaurant brand from India. I’ve never tried it over there but the food here is very good. I really like how it’s got traditional flavors mixed with innovative flair. The kebabs are cooked so well and the ingredients taste so fresh. My favorite are the lamb chops and the tandoori prawn. I also go to Saras, which does South Indian, for their dosa [rice crepe]—really good and not too pricey. Southern food is so hard to create at home so that’s what I’ll often eat out in Bangkok.”
“I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the solid standards at Indus: the kebabs, the paneer tikkas and their roti selection, especially the super flakey pudina [mint] paratha. Saras has an epic samosa—generously stuffed, carom-seed flecked, with a great tamarind chutney. All that said, Indian food suffers from the same stuck-in-the-mud-ness that most ancient and well-loved cuisines—including Thai—do. No one wants to challenge diners’ expectations by reinventing the wheel, which is why most Indian restaurants and their menus around the world are so templated. For this reason, I’ll gladly have a fist fight with anyone who doesn’t ‘get’ Gaggan. He’s bringing in more and more global flavors, but I don’t think enough people appreciate how solid and perfect his Indian flavors are, whatever gastro-process they’re being put through.”
“My all-time favorite for authentic North Indian cuisine—where my family is originally from—is Indus. They market themselves as Indian fine dining but it’s the closest you’ll get to authentic flavor outside of India. Whenever I crave Indian ‘street food’ or snacks, I usually go to Saras. You’re not really paying for a nice atmosphere or anything—it’s purely about the food. Maya does amazing tandoori and I really like their biryani, which is kind of like the Indian version of khao phad. You also can’t go wrong in Phahurat. I never bother remembering the names of the eateries cos they all look pretty much the same, selling vegetables and Indian sweets and spices out front. Sometimes you won’t even realize there’s a restaurant out back selling fussfree Indian food from all parts of the country.”
VIKRAM ARUNAGIRI, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF GULPBKK “Indian food in Bangkok, like most countries, falls into three categories: fine dining, casual comfort food and tourist traps. For fine dining, The Great Kabab Factory is my pick. They are possibly the only place to use such a variety of spices and flavors. Almost none of their dishes taste the same. The sheer variety is amazing. For comfort food it has to be Tamil Nadu. Tucked away in Silom Soi 11, this hole-in-the-wall brings me back to my mom’s cooking. Don’t expect any service or ambiance, just good wholesome comfort food. If you want your mind to be blown and transported to another planet then only one man can do it: Gaggan.”
GAGGAN ANAND, CHEF AND OWNER, GAGGAN “I go to Shri Ganesha in Sukhumvit Soi 13 for South Indian food, as well as Sanjha Chulha opposite Indra Hotel. Honestly, all the rest is quite crappy.”

ROSHNI CHUGANI, SALES & MARKETING EXECUTIVE OF THEASIANPARENT.COM “My favorite would have to be Charcoal for its galauti kebab, mutton biryani and dum ki raan [whole leg of spiced mutton]. An all-time classic is Rang Mahal for its chicken malai kebab, butter chicken, dahl makhni and variety of naans. It also has this chocolate ball with ice cream in it that I always get for dessert! It’s making me hungry thinking of them.”

Soho Hospitality Group’s high-end contemporary Indian contender offers a tight menu focusing almost exclusively on tandoor-cooked kebabs. Like all Charcoal’s food, these are wonderfully spiced and flavorful, be it the classic lamb sheekh kebab (B380 for three pieces) or chicken murgh malai kebab (B400 for five pieces). You won’t find any curries beyond the buttery dal Charcoal (urad lentils, tomatoes, ginger and garlic, B220). Wash it all down with cocktails by Joseph Boroski.
Tucked in an old-school setting with white tablecloths, folded cloth napkins and butler-esque service, this longstanding Indian restaurant packs heaps of flavor into its dishes. The food here is more than just curries and kebabs, though both are delicious and well-executed. Stick with the simplest stuff: butter chicken (B295), dahl tadka (B195) and aloo matter (B225).
Rather than the heavy curries of the North which most casual Indian eaters are familiar with, Akshaya does Southern vegetarian food, most notably dosa—giant, crepelike wraps with various curried fillings. B116 gets you either one full-size masala dosa (filled with potatoes and lentils) or a masala dosa set, which includes a mini masala dosa with one idly (rice cake) and vada (India’s richly spiced, donut-shaped, savory batter snack).

OPEN DOOR
Char Wireless Road gets a rooftop steakhouse and bar. The buzz: The latest rooftop restaurant and bar in town sits on the top two stories of Hotel Indigo. The name Char comes from the hotel group’s Shanghai property, as does the bar-and-grill concept spread over two stories. The decor: The duplex venue comprises a rooftop bar on top of a stylish dining room. Char is definitely not a solemn steakhouse lined with wood panels and thick leather chairs, going instead for a more open and modern approach. High ceilings, comfortable table seating, warm touches of brass and an eclectic mix of chairs create a casual, welcoming space. Upstairs is an openair rooftop bar.
18
The food: French chef Lionel Vinatier (previously of Maxim and Maverick) presides over a classic steakhouse menu, featuring imported beef like Darling Down wagyu from Australia and Kobe wagyu from Japan, as well as local beef by butcher Arnaud Carre (of Arno’s). Steak starts at B650 for 180g of 100-day grain-fed Black Angus. The chef’s mastery of French cuisine is showcased through dishes like the four-day-simmered French onion soup (B280), lobster bisque (B350) and duck confit (B590). We also like their seafood dishes, particularly the tuna tartar (B200) and flavorful black cod steak (B680). Shanghai’s best-selling banana cheesecake (B310) is also on the menu here, along with new creations, including a deconstructed tiramisu (B280), which sees coffee sponge cake smothered in mascarpone foam, and Thai-
style lemongrass-infused panna cotta (B265), served with mango compote and passion fruit-mango caviar. The drinks: French bartender Francesco Moretti, who’s also behind the drink list at Revolucion Cocktail, created a list of signature cocktails, all with pretty presentation. Served in a ceramic tea cup, Kanagawa (B300) stands out with its tea hints from sencha-infused Absolut vodka, which blends well with rose syrup, lime, brown sugar and plum. Red and white wines are priced at B160-520 by the glass. Why you should care: French bistro favorites, an elegant space and some of the best views in the area. Wine Connection bistros have now spread so much across Bangkok that we can’t keep up with them. But this latest one, The Grill, is different. The go-to brand for a cheap steak and platter of antipasti has this time attempted to go slightly upscale, buying in on the dry-aged meat, grillspecialist trend. Prices, though, remain firmly down to earth: a bone-in, near1kg rib-eye tomahawk will cost you just B1,890, while wines that start at B599 a bottle remain practically unbeatable. Visit on a Friday night and you will also find the restaurant heaving. During our last visit, four tables worth of people stood outside, serenaded by an acoustic jazz trio playing bossanova Bob Marley as they awaited entry into the restaurant’s temple of dangling bulbs, orange brickwork and riveted black steel. And we don’t blame them. A ravioli of spinach and mozzarella (B210) sums up this place well:

Taking over the former spot belonging to Carl’s Jr. in Silom salaryman haven Soi Thaniya, this izakaya chain with over 60 branches worldwide specializes in mountains of golden tebasaki, or Nagoya-style fried chicken wings. The decor remains fairly nondescript, with the addition of sake bottles, some paper screen walls and banners bearing the chain’s mascot, a cheery half-man, half-chicken, failing to add too much character. But there’s plenty of fun to be had, here. Aside from the star attraction, the menu packs all sorts of comfort dishes like yakisoba, sashimi and stir-fries, though arguably the real emphasis is on booze. While the bar is a pretty solitary space, the lowceilinged room at the back gets boisterous with a mix of Japanese expats and Thai office workers pounding back ice-cold draft Asahi (from B119) or making the most of the
all-you-can-drink beer, sake and shochu deal (B499/90 minutes). There are two types of deep-fried wings on offer—the original maboroshino tebasaki (B130/5 pieces) and the kuro tebasaki (B95/3 pieces)—both of which look fried to the point of no return. That’s misleading and the flavors are extremely addictive. The former are peppery and salty with just a hint of spiciness, while the latter taste like they’ve been doused in Worcestershire sauce. For us, the crispy, crunchy skin is so delicious it outweighs the slightly dry meat. Elsewhere portions are kept small, in keeping with the drinking atmosphere. The zuri kara negi sio ponzu (fried chicken knuckles in ponzu sauce, B130) are another moreish snack, benefiting from a liberal squeeze of lime, while the Yamachan miso kyu-ri (cucumber with miso soup, B105) is a refreshingly simple side of greens. In fact, we found most dishes delicious, whether the omelet-like nira tama itame (egg with garlic chives, B140) or zesty buta pon (stir-fried pork in a sour sauce, B170). Again, portions are quite tiny, but priced accordingly, so you navigate the great big menu without too much fear of a crazy bill— or you just order another pile of wings. Sekai No Yamachan is no place for a civilized sit-down dinner—there are a ton of those in this neighborhood—but if it’s fast food and beer-fueled cheer you want, it hits the spot. Note: There’s another branch at The Manor on Sukhumvit Soi 39.

efficient, global bistro food designed to attract bums on seats rather than critical plaudits. The tomato-based sauce tastes sharp and moreish, the pasta well-cooked, the stuffing plentiful enough—a definite step up from the usual Wine Connection offering. It’s a similar story with the special of Spanish mussels (B260). Of course you don’t get the taste-of-the-seaside hit of a mussel scraped from the rock not five hours before, but they’re plump and sweet and swimming in a salty, paprika-rich broth that makes you want to dunk things in it. Dessert, again, is no let-down: the lime pie (B90) might have sweaty pastry, but the taste is nonetheless a sharp, sweet hit of sugar. We’d be happy to take back any a bad word said about Wine Connection and call The Grill a triumph. Sadly, though, their big-ticket item—the steak—is a disappointment. Sure, we went for the cheap cut—a 280g Australian grain-fed sirloin for B790—but it didn’t need to be shorn of the lovely rind of flavordispensing fat which the word sirloin promises. Without it, there’s not much happening in this one-dimensional hunk of meat. We also don’t taste any benefit from the restaurant’s muchtalked-about in-house dry-aging treatment. The Grill can deliver a great meal—tasty, friendly on the wallet, filling and served to your table by fawning staff with beaming smiles. But you’re after the tangy, well-matured, mineral-rich juicy hit of a good steak, you might be disappointed.

SAT Radio Waves This year, indie concert promoters Have You Heard? have already brought us special visitors in the form of Ratatat and Last Dinosaurs. Now they’re turning to a familiar name this July 4. Swedish dream-pop band The Radio Dept. were last here in 2013, when they performed tracks like “Heaven’s on Fire” and “Pulling Our Weight” to a jam-packed Sonic Ekamai. This time they’ll be taking over Voice Space (BBD Building, 197 Viphavadi Rangsit) with teaser songs from their forthcoming album, along with support from local acts Hariguem Zaboy and Yena.
FRI Fun Bar Karaoke Photographer Taweewit Kijtanasoonthonr’s latest solo exhibition, Karaoke Twilight, takes a peek inside the neon-lit windows of Bangkok’s late-night karaoke bars. Running at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (939 Rama 1 Rd.) from Jul 2-31, the series goes beyond the garish façades of these institutions and delves into the loneliness of the people living within.
FRI Zine Scene If you’re a budding zine maker, creative writer or just an oldfashioned bookworm, head over to Museum Siam (Phra Nang Klao Rd.) this Jul 2 for Make a Zine 2: the Love Zine Edition. Back by popular demand, this event consists of a zine-making workshop, an exhibition of noteworthy independent zines with 18+ content, and a free-for-all zine library for kicking back and reading, a zine swap zone for makers to exchange works, a zine shop for readers to get their hands on freshly printed zines, and, finally, a refreshments area filled with food and drinks.
FRI Molam Mania We were thrilled by the news Paradise Bangkok International Molam Band would be taking their 21st century spin on Isaan funk on tour throughout Europe, including a date at Glastonbury. Good news is the band have lived to tell the tale and now they’ll be performing a special set at their spiritual home, Studio Lam (Sukhumvit Soi 51), this July 6.

Bangkok's coolest underground electro label, Comet Records, celebrates its fourth birthday this July with four gigs spread across four venues. Launched by Jakchai Panchanon back in 2012, Comet Records' roster reads like a who's who of the city's most forward-thinking electronic acts, from the trip-hop sounds of Naked Astronaught and funkified offerings of Jakchai's solo project Casinotone to the soaring dream-pop of Vivid Dream and hazy r'n'b of UNDA. Good news is you'll be able to catch most of these bands live in action throughout July, when the Comet Records anniversary hits the road:
and Naked Astronaught. Jul 9 at Jam (41 Charoen Rat Soi 1, BTS Surasak) with Vivid Dream, Casinotone and UNDA. Jul 16 at Moose (24 Ekkamai Soi 21) with Yanin x Casinotone, Astro302 and Orbital XX. Q&A
Comet Records founder Jakchai Panchanon Congratulations, Comet Records is turning four! How has Bangkok’s music scene changed in that time? Bangkok indie has become mainstream. Solo artists have disappeared. Local electronic music artists have declined while lots of international artists are booming. There are less indie gigs. Synthpop is more popular than postrock. Social media has become more powerful. New artists can publish their works much more easily. The underground electronic music scene still receives minimal support. Catchy pop melodies are as much a part of Thai culture as soap operas. Name four record labels that inspired you growing up? Back five years ago I was inspired mainly from a variety of electronic music labels who had a singularly strong direction, like Ed Bangers Records [France], DFA Records [US], Future Classic [Australia] and Warp Records [UK]. Which Comet Records releases are you most proud of? Comet Comic Compilation Vol.1 and 2. What new releases are coming up for Comet Records this year? A lot of new singles from existing artists and new artists: Vivid Dream, Nymph Hutakom, Astro302 and Lobofunk. Some collaboration singles with new social media artists under the project "Underground Scouted.” And some EP and LP releases, such as Morg, Minus88, Casinotone and Vivid Dream. Maybe Comet Comic Compilation Vol. 3. Where do you see Comet Records in four years’ time? Somewhere on this planet. Interview by Carl Dixon
