Moose will be missed Hot on the heels of Suk 22’s Overground, Bangkok is about to lose yet another live music institution. Moose, known for shows from up-and-coming local acts through to impromptu gigs from Pete Doherty, will go the way of defunct sister venues Sonic Ekkamai and Cosmic Cafe at the end of the month. At least it will go out in style with a party on Jul 31—see goo.gl/BDELGl. Joel Robuchon is about to start selling sandwiches in Central Embassy The French fine-dining powerhouse is set to take on Paul with his own style of casual French lunch fare and desserts. It’s a concept cribbed from Hong Kong, where for some time diners have been enjoying pastas, sandwiches and desserts endorsed by the most Michelin-lauded chef in the world at several mall locations. Expect its doors to open on Embassy’s ground floor any day now. The chef for Gaggan’s new restaurant comes from Noma She’s called Garima Arora and she cooked for Danish foodforager extraordinaire Rene Redzepi for three years before Gaggan Anand caught wind of her. Arora will head the kitchen at Gaggan’s yet-to-be-named new venture opposite the celebrated future-Indian cuisine restaurant on Lang Suan Road. The original restaurant will also be joined by a B20million food research laboratory. Bartenders and chefs are getting creative with mangosteen Move over durian. It’s the queen of fruit’s time to shine! Bangkok bars and restaurants are rolling out tasty seasonal drinks and dishes, like US-hailing tapas bar Toro’s seared foie gras served with roselle sauce and mangosteen (B490) or Rabbit Hole’s Purple Rain (B390), a gin-based cocktail with muddled mangosteen and lemongrass notes. See more of the purple stuff at goo.gl/1TxJvI. You will drown because TVs are really expensive. You heard about the City Hall office renovation that cost B16.5 million? You know, the one where chairs cost B54,500 each and 55” TVs are B79,900. The Office of Attorney General found the money was coming from the Department of Drainage and Sewers. Now you know why our Gubernatorial Graciousness has suggested those who don’t like to get their feet wet during the rainy season go live on a mountain. That drainage money is his!

Hot: Tomorrowland
Not: Fact checking
Post Today spread the completely false rumor that Belgium’s massive Tomorrowland dance music festival might be coming to Thailand. The news was then covered by everyone in Bangkok, us included, thus sending the city’s EDM fans into a frenzy. It was left to the international edition of Billboard to eventually quash the story—though pinning it as a case of mistranslation was way too kind to the original story’s sneaky wording.
INTERVIEW
Hot: Pokemon Go
Not: Niantic Labs
The worldwide release of fantasy animal fighting game Pokemon Go actually made Bangkokians want to step outside this week. Pantip and Facebook exploded with updates of people catching Snorlax snoozing on Ladprao, Bulbasaur hopping around Silom and Magikarp by the Chao Phraya River. That is, until its developers blocked the game everywhere except in Australia and New Zealand and ruined the fun for everyone.
The Island Funeral is a road trip movie about a young Muslim traveling to the Southern conflict zone in Pattani. Directed by veteran director Pimpaka Towira, 49, the movie has been screened at international film festivals around the world, picking up awards from the Tokyo International Film Festival late last year and the 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival this April. Thai audiences will finally get a chance to see the South in a different light on Jul 21 (see BK Now, page 27).
Hot: Chiang Mai
Why make a movie about the conflict in Southern Thailand? I regularly traveled to Pattani with my family when I was young, so I saw how beautiful it was before. When the conflict and violence began, I wondered what was really going on. There aren’t many movies depicting Southern Thailand, but it’s an important region—both its history and strategic location. After I talked with [director and Bangkok Post columnist] Kong Rithdee, who is also a Muslim, about this, we decided to co-write a screenplay together: a young Muslim lady making a road trip to the South and learning about the conflict.
Not: Bangkok
Travel + Leisure’s annual list calling Bangkok one of the best cities in the world is out again. This time though we’ve dropped eight places from 6th to 14th, while Chiang Mai, which wasn’t even in last year’s list, has jumped to no. 2. In the world. We’ll repeat: Chiang Mai is voted the world’s second best city when 12 months ago it didn’t even bother a mention. The opening of Maiiam must have been even more special than we thought.
Hot: Spanish food
Not: Our diet
When it comes to Spanish food in Bangkok, Tapas y Vino and that other Tapas on Suk 11 had it their own way for years. All that changed in 2016, which we’ll forever remember as the year we learned what roast Segovian suckling pig tastes like. Good! See page 18.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
4
Was it important that the Muslim character be played by a Muslim? I wanted the actress to be Muslim, just like the characte so she could understand the complicated issues Muslims face in life. Luckily, I found Sasithorn “Heen” Panichnok. Why use 16mm to shoot the film? I used to shoot with film a lot when I was young; I have an affection for it. Film creates a mood of reflection and memory; it fits the road trip genre, too. But as we took six, seven years to finish the shooting, the film process
grew increasingly painful. Technology changes really fast. As film has disappeared from the movie industry here, it’s really complicated to edit it. We had to digitize everything while trying to keep the look and feel. Any particular difficulties about shooting in the South? Luckily, we had locals helping us with the project, from the research all the way through shooting. I found that people down there were really nice; but officials often kept us in their sights while we were shooting. I know that they were concerned about our safety but actually, they are usually the target of attackers, so we were concerned that their visits were pretty risky for us, too. How do you portray a conflict that is this complex? Honestly, after years of back and forth to the South, I still don’t understand what is going on. But I can clearly say it’s not about religion at all. I can see distrust towards officials. My movie doesn’t really talk about the conflict but I try to say how we should solve the conflict. I believe that before outsiders try to fix the problem, they should listen to insiders. Bangkokians
believe the South is dangerous. When I was shooting the movie, I remember driving from the South back to Bangkok. On that day, CentralWorld was burnt down. It really raised questions in my mind as to which place is more dangerous, the South or Bangkok? It’s about which angle you see the problem from. What is the status of indie cinema in Thailand? The bad world economy really hit the indie film industry. While mass market films are still going strong, indie moviemakers are struggling. Both young and veteran directors all head to festivals to find money which is different from the past, when veteran directors would get support from other channels. The freshness of indie movies from South America or even our neighbors like Myanmar and Cambodia is really a challenge to Thai indie cinema, too. We need to advance ourselves. We can’t just try to make movies. We also need to keep up with a world where people have so many options other than just going to the cinema. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

Ari of the East If there’s one place left in Bangkok where we can still almost afford to buy an apartment, it’s here. Phra Khanong has seen a condo development boom over the last couples of years, which has brought a whole lot more to the community. W District and a bunch of quirky new art spaces, restaurants and bars have also changed the game. Here’s what you should know. By Joseph Lam
Dining PPPPP Phra Khanong’s dining scene is still very much in the "up and coming" category, but it's already home to some cool eateries and relatively hard-to-find flavors. With the exception of Lucca and its Tuscan dishes (108/4 Sukhumvit Soi 65), most of the dining spots are more laid-back and sit around W District and the BTS. For authentic Japanese there’s Bangkok Okinawa Restaurant Kinjo (24/1 Sukhumvit Soi 69), which rolls out hard tofu and pickled fish as well as fatty pork legs cooked in thick soy sauce, and hosts live music upstairs. Just down the road from W District you’ll find Sod Sai Fish & Chips (Pridi Banomyong Soi 3), where a veteran Malaysian chef who’s worked in both Thailand and Singapore serves up his own take on fish and chips—lightly crusted in Chang beer batter. For the indecisive, W District is home to tons of of little shops including three of our favorite casual dining spots: tapas specialist Broken Eggs, one of Bangkok’s best banh mi at Banh Mi Crispy, and seriously good nachos at Express Mexican. For street eats, there is Phra Khanong Market, which is home to possibly the city's most authentic Burmese food.
Phra Khanong Market
Lucca
Express Mexican
Community PPPPP With the condo boom and a BTS station in the mix, Phra Khanong is home to a large expat community. It’s also relatively close to Bangkok University’s city campus and with W District market right by the BTS you’ll find many students hanging around the area.

Phra Khanong has seen numerous developers move in. Being on the outskirts of the city center means rental prices are significantly lower than those around Sathorn or Phrom Phong. Prices in the brand-new Rhythm Sukhumvit 44/1 by Asian Property (AP), situated right beside the BTS, start at around B20,000. Just as close to the BTS, The Room Sukhumvit 69 by Land and House is a little steeper at B25,000-72,000. Move one station further and you'll see your money go even further at Sansiri's The Base Sukhumvit 77 (B12,000-20,000/month) and Blocs 77 (B15,00-25,000/month).
Transportation PPPPP Having a BTS nearby is always a plus. And even if your condo isn’t right by the station, many buildings provide shuttle schemes for residents. Bus routes are also in ready supply, with numbers 23, 40, 48, 71, 98, 115, 132, 173, 501, 508 and 545 passing through the area. If you want to escape Bangkok traffic and experience an old-school long-tail boat or speed boat, you can go to the Phra Khanong pier and enjoy a little trip to Iam Sombat Market in On Nut.

This is where living in Phra Khanong falls down. Aside from the new Naiipa Art Complex (see BK Asks), which is a leafy community mall built around the existing trees on the site, there’s not much green happening around here at all. And no, 42 Tee Off and Arsenal Soccer School don’t count.

How would you describe the community around Phra Khanong? "Businesses in this area really target foreigners, like Japanese and Korean. W District is modern, chic and has fewer people than Thonglor and Ekkamai. It has its own style and culture—kind of like the Ari of Eastern Bangkok ." 5/38 Pridi
Nightlife PPPPP It’s no secret that Phra Khanong’s bar scene doesn’t hold a candle to the whisky dens of Ekkamai or the hustle and bustle of Thonglor, but there is nightlife to be found. On one end of the street there’s Cielo Rooftop Sky Bar & Restaurant (formerly Zeppelin, 45-46 Flr Le Ruk Condominium, W District), which offers great views of the city from Sukhumvit’s tallest condo and dishes out some quality grill dishes. For those after a quiet evening, the recently opened Koryoriya-te (24 Sukhumvit Soi 69) offers an authentic Japanese-style gentlemen’s bar feel, dimly lit and heavy on the wood. Wine drinkers can head to Casa Teo (W District, Sukhumvit Soi 69-71), which claims to be home to Bangkok’s largest Spanish wine collection and serves tasty jamon platters. Craft beer fans have Wishbeer Home Bar (Sukhumvit Soi 67), which has taps like Brewdog, Bavaria, Evil Twin, Choufffe and Vedett. There’s also Ma-Rum-Ba (Sukhumvit Soi 69/1), where a trio of rum makers serve their own Three Monkey Rum. And, of course, there’s also W Market at W District, which pours a range of beer towers for anyone after a casual night with friends.

Naiipa Art Complex
How have you seen the area change? It used to feel not so much a part of the city, more suburban. Of course the BTS changed all that, and the last couple of years have really been booming.
Work & Play PPPPP
What does Phra Khanong lack? The whole of Bangkok lacks green areas, and certainly I don’t see many around Phra Khanong, except for my place, Naiipa.
Goja Art Gallery
Hubba-To
Have you seen the community change? Before it was quite a poor area. There are now more foreigners—Japanese, Europeans, Americans. I think this changes the dynamic of the area for the better and brings in more new businesses.

Tired of having the same Ikea furniture as your friends? Good news! Bangkok’s brimming with new European furniture labels. Here are our faves. By Earn Saenmuk
Hay Hay makes furniture which looks like it belongs BK PICK! on some designer blog about niche and hideously expensive brands. The truth, though, is quite different. Design blogs; yes. But expensive; no. This cult Danish furniture label turns out a whole lot of items that are perfectly affordable for your average design junky. Get your hands on classic, minimal pieces like the Crinkle blanket in Bordeaux (B5,990), an hour glass in the brand’s signature powdery mint color scheme (B1,550), or even some colorful steel trays in geometric shapes from just B725. Want to make a statement splurge? Seek out the lounge chair with wooden legs—yours for B63,240. 3/F, Home & Living Zone, Siam Discovery, Rama 1 Rd. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Siam. bit.ly/29qIXWz
Fermob Sexy, functional, colorful and tres, tres French, there’s a whole lot to love about Fermob’s fun-yet-elegant garden furniture. You can create your own set of colorful chairs and tables from any of their collections: go retro with aubergine, honey and lagoon blue, or add a contemporary pop of zesty “Verveine” green. Prices range from a Cabanon cushion (B3,240) to the humongous Bellevie table (B75,000). We like! 1/F, Building F, Crystal Design Center, Praditmanoontham Rd. www.fermob.com
Tom Dixon No one does shiny metal statement furniture quite like British industrial designer extraordinaire Tom Dixon. His sleek pendant lamps and roly-poly chairs have been brightening up swanky industrial loft spaces for decades, and now can be found in Bangkok at Motif stores and Siam Discovery. Look away now if you think Habitat’s expensive, though. His elegantly warped “Melt” ceiling lights will cost you anything upward

Habitat Our beloved Habitat has returned to the inner city. It’s been six bleak years since design legend Terence Conran’s furniture label upped sticks from Siam Discovery, taking with it those beautifully chic statement pieces in muted tones and s m o o t h matte woods. Now though, all it takes is a trip to BTS Siam to browse designs as good as the Oakwood extender dining table (B48,519) and matching chairs (B9,180 each), starshape ceiling lamp (B3,528), and white leather daybed (B32,490). Marimekko It’s not as new to Bangkok as some of the brands on this list, but overlooking the beautiful home fabrics and ceramics of Marimekko would be madness for anyone after that soft, Scandinavian look. The Finnish fashion and furnishings label deals in covers, blankets, and bed linens with a colorfully patchy aesthetic. Prices are also a snip, starting at just B690 for a coin bag. Daytime Delight Charoenkrung’s rising-star restaurant 80/20 has expanded its service to brunch on weekends (Sat-Sun,10am-2pm). Made using as many local ingredients as possible, the dishes here aren’t just your average eggy items. The 80/20 Benedict (B220), for example, sees beetroot-cured snapper and wilted local spinach on slices of house baguette, which is then finished with a flavorful, aromatic dill hollandaise. A delicious coconut dressing stars in the classic local greens salad dish (B140), while you can expect some nice, thick house-brined Canadian bacon in the Peameal bacon sandwich (B190), along with runny fried egg, garlic aioli and rich brioche bread. For vegetarians, we highly recommend the experimental local vegetable terrine (B200)—layers of thinly sliced root vegetables, served with charred eggplants, mushrooms, luffa, baby corn and smoky tomato puree. If you decide to go sweet, try the all-house-made soy yogurt parfait (B50) with roselle jam and coconut granola, or buckwheat pancake with Canadian maple syrup. Also try the mung bean drink (B70). 1052-1054 Charoenkrung Rd., 087-593-1936

Australia-hailing Touche Hombre is a trendy blend of Mexican booze, street art and hip-hop tunes. Aside from the serious cocktails (try Tommy’s Margarita, which costs only B275), the place also serves reliable, substantial food that adds twists to traditional fare like guacamole, tacos, Mexican-style salads and meat dishes. They highlight a range of imported chilies as well as house-made essentials like tortillas and chips. The signature elotes callejeros (B120) blends grilled corn on the cob with chipotle mayo, cotija cheese and lime—the tacos (from B225/2 pieces) are delicious, too. bites A Stroll through Provence France's Southeast is home to light fare that's big on flavors. Here's where to try it without leaving town. Salade Nicoise
Bouillabaisse
Filets de Sardine au Citron
F
rench bakery and cafe PAUL is having a festival celebrating Provencal flavors (see box, below). Here, we've rounded up the top Bangkok restaurants to get some of these Southeastern French classics throughout the year, and also the PAUL specials being rolled out for the occasion (through Aug 14, 2016).
Bouillabaisse
Filets de Sardine au Citron
What is it: There are two major cities on the Southeastern coast of France, Nice and Marseilles. Nice lays claim to the salade Nicoise (more on that later), while Marseille owns the bouillabaisse, a thick saffron-flavored seafood soup. Legend has it the soup was invented to use the bony and unsightly rockfish fishermen couldn’t sell at the market.
What is it: Sardines are the most underrated fish in the Mediterranean, full of wonderful flavors that shine through when simply grilled, or when marinated. In France, nothing says summer like sardines on a barbecue.
Get it year-round at: Cafe Parisien, which is home to Herve Frerard, the extraordinary chef of the defunct Beaulieu (another Mediterranean port), and whose bouillabaisse has long been top-dog in Bangkok.130-132, Glasshouse at Sindhorn, Wireless Rd., 02-650-9993. Open Mon-Sat 11:30am-2pm, 6-10pm. BTS Ploen Chit PAUL’s take: Whole pieces of fish in a bouillabaisse soup and a plate of toasted bread accompanied by some saffron-topped rouille (consists of olive oil, garlic and saffron).
Get it year-round at: El Mercado, a market-slash-restaurant operated by Frenchies who know a good sardine when they see one. 490 Soi Phai Singto, Ratchadaphisek Rd., 02-0038922. Open Tue-Thu 9:30am-9:30pm; Fri-Sat 9:30am-10:30pm. MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre
Planche de Crespeou
Salade NiÇoise
Tomates Farcies
What is it: This fresh and colorful salad layers textures and flavors: ripe peppers, salty anchovies, fragrant olives, crunchy greens, tender tuna and more, depending on the chef’s whim. It owes its name to Nice, which is a mere 30 minutes' drive from Italy.
What is it: This beautifully simple dish sees ground meat mixed with herbs and bread (much like sausage meat), baked into a carved-out tomato.
Get it year-round at: The Glass, a Frenchowned restaurant doing bistro classics on Ekamai. Civic Horizon, 8/8 Sukhumvit Soi 63, 02-108-8982. Open Mon-Thu 11:30am-10:30pm; Fri-Sat 11:30am-11pm. BTS Ekkamai PAUL’s take: The tuna is served chopped like a light tartare and topped with rocket salad and boiled potatoes.
PAUL’s take: Filletted and baked with fennel, olives, rosemary and olive oil, this is all of Provence in a single dish.
Get it year-round at: Pizza Massilia, which is named after Marseilles and marries Provencal flavors with those of nearby Italy. 15/1 Soi Ruam Rudi, 02-651-5091. Open daily 5-11:30pm. BTS Phloen Chit
Tapenade What is it: A spread which mixes black olives and anchovy. Have it with toasted baguette and a glass of pastis (an anise-flavored spirit) before dinner, like a true Provencal. PAUL’s take: PAUL’s Assiette apéritive Provençale deconstructs the classic into three dips: one with green and black olives, one with anchovy and one with tuna. It comes with the traditional toasted baguette, though.
PAUL's Provencal Festival To get all these dishes, simply head to a PAUL near you for the Provencal Festival, running from July to 14 August. Beyond the dishes mentioned above, you can also try typical Southeastern pastries like the Tropezienne (a brioche sliced in half and filled with cream) and tartelette à l’orange et fleur d’oranger (orange and orange blossom tart).

SPANISH
Hola Espana This city’s best Spanish restaurants. By Natcha Sanguankiattichai Uno Mas
Toro
NEW!
The place: Toro’s blend of modern and rustic elements comes straight from the New York branch of this American tapas bar. Hanging greens drape down faux windows and the bar, while wooden floors and furniture break up the bare concrete ceilings and dangling lamps. The chef: Toro’s masterminds are celebrity chefs Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette, both past winners of the James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef, Northeast award—the Oscars of the culinary world. Here in Bangkok, chef Zach Watkins, who has worked alongside them for seven years, mans the kitchen. The food: The US branches’ modern tapas concept adapts itself to suit local ingredients and palates. That means seared foie gras (B490) served with roselle sauce, shimeji mushroom and mangosteen, and hanger steak (filete a la plancha, B420) alongside caramelized red onion and green curry butter. Other standout offerings include asado de huesos (bone marrow and oxtail marmalade with radish citrus salad and cocoa nib, B450), ensalada de sandia (watermelon salad with baby anchovies, pomelo and cotija cheese, B220) and setas y huevo (San Sebastian-style wild mushrooms with wild herbs and farm egg, B250). Also, don’t miss the churros (B220)—perfectly crisp yet moist inside. Pair your dinner with the refreshing watermelon sangria (B310) or Spanish wine poured straight from the porron. 2/F, 72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-392-7790
Tapas y Vino The place: Bangkok’s Spanish institution goes for old-school sophistication—chandeliers, plush upholstery and a private room lined with wine bottles. There’s a big open-plan kitchen with a long counter for diners to watch the cooking. The chef: Madrid-born chef Pedro Carrillo comes entirely from a hotel restaurant background, starting in his hometown before moving to Paris, the US, Cuba, Benin and Myanmar.
Osito
Uno Mas
The place: Osito trades off the contagious, fun vibes of its neighbor, La Monita Mexican restaurant, while also bringing its own dose of informal, after-work style. The casual place features a semiopen kitchen, where you can get a peek of the crew at work as well as a bar counter where they stock a solid lineup of gin.
The place: Nestled up on the 54th floor of Centara Grand, this restaurant offers the best views of the lot. Those panoramic cityscapes are even better thanks to the open windows (nighttime only) and breeze allowed through. The bar stands around a vast, two-story-tall walk-in wine cellar, while for dinner you can choose between more formal seating beside the cold tapas station and a terrace where they grill the meat.
The chef: German chef Daniel Bucher started off his cooking career as a caterer for art and music festivals. He was invited to Plaza Athenee for a pop-up dinner event and not long after became head chef of its French restaurant, Reflexions. He joined the Osito team and led the reopening last year. The food: While sticking to Spanish flavors, the chef plays around with almost-entirely local products. The menu features his takes on traditional pulpo a la gallega (boiled octopus on potato slices, B320), tortilla espanola (Spanish omelet, B75), chicken croqueta (deep-fried balls of pulled chicken confit with pig blood pudding, B140) and a variety of rotating pintxos (pieces of breat with toppings, B320/6 pieces). Our fave: his pressed sandwich with cobra goat cheese and chorizo (B220). Mahatun Plaza, 888/23-24 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-651-4399. BTS Phloen Chit
Islero The place: A modern, geometric mood dominates this space at the foot of Athenee Tower. It’s upscale, luxurious, sexy and pricey-looking, but the whole vibe is more laidback sophistication than stiff fine dining. There’s also a separate bar to one side called Cava, while the wide terrace promises to be one of Wireless’s nicest alfresco spots once temperatures cool down. The chef: Hailing from Extremadura, chef Pedro Luis Rodriguez Serrano heads the kitchen on-site. The chef has worked with both modern and traditional kitchens in star-studded restaurants in Spain like Atrio, Azurmendi and Chaflan.
The food: Tortilla omelet (B120), gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns, B350), gazpacho (chilled Spanish soup, B190) and paella (from B750) highlight the menu, along with creations including tuna tartare, served with Malaga-style almond gazpacho and tuna-stuffed roasted piquillo pepper. Pullman’s Vinoteca wine cellar covers the drink side of the place, stocking a list of Spanish wine and other international bottles.
The food: The restaurant takes on the traditional end of Spanish cuisine and presents it in a contemporary style. The menu features classics like Iberico ham croquettes (B480), grilled octopus tentacles (B460) served with beans in Castilian stew, baked fish fillet with potatoes and almonds (B680) and, the highlight, Josper-grilled, Segovian-style suckling pig (B3,900 for a half pig), imported from Spain. Other dishes go the modern route, like olive spheres (B80) and deconstructed Spanish omelet (B380) served in the form of cream and espuma in a martini glass. Wine by the glass starts at B260.

What do you love about Spanish cuisine?
The chef: Spanish national Joan Tanya Dot was cooking at Pullman Grande’s Tapas Y Vino before here, and draws on vast experience at posts in the UK, Cayman Island and in Spain. The food: Some 40-odd hot and cold tapas dominate the menu, alongside a selection of very fancy cold cuts like Joselito ham (self-described as the best Iberian ham in the world and recipient of some serious foodie praise too, B790-1,290). But the really exciting stuff is the Josper oven-roasted Cochinillo suckling pig (B1,490). There’s also a topdrawer list of Spanish reds and whites, with a total 36 wines offered by the glass in both 9cl and 15cl pours (priced from B170-820). And a menu of fruitheavy cocktails at B390 each.
JOAN TANYA DOT, HEAD CHEF OF UNO MAS “It’s a style of food everybody can enjoy. The overall flavor is not to aggressive in the mouth—not excessively spicy or sweet. And it’s very straightforward. We don’t have a lot of sauces and garnishes. The focus is on the produce.”

Barcelona Gaudi The place: The work of Catalonia’s most famous son, architect Antoni Gaudi, inspires the facade of this two-story restaurant. Its floor-to-ceiling windows are framed by organic, cave-like pillars, while inside you’ll find a space that’s somewhat more ordinary, with little to lighten the mood beyond colorful mosaic tiles and a hand-painted mural of Barcelona on one wall. The chef: Catalan chef Marc Font Garriga (formerly of Hola, the Spanish restaurant at Eight Thonglor) comes from a restaurant family. After cooking in Bangkok for a few years, he decided to partner with friends and open the restaurant. The food: Typical Spanish and French-influenced Catalan-style dishes. The laminated menu placemats include all the Spanish classics like croquettes (B80), Spanish omelet (B100) and garlic prawns (B200). A highlight here is the hearty paella (from B460). Traditional Catalan dishes include the fideua (noodle paella, B460/690) and mandonguilles (pork meatballs with squid, B130). For drinks, house wine starts at just B60 (Australian Shiraz and Chardonnay) while sangria is B200/500 per jar. Le Premier 1 Condominium, Sukhumvit Soi 23, 02-661-7410
ZACH WATKINS, CHEF DE CUISINE OF TORO “There’s no certain format to what can be called tapas. I can be creative with something I see at the market and people will easily order it to share. I enjoy that a lot.”
PEDRO CARRILLO, EXECUTIVE CHEF OF TAPAS Y VINO “The way you share the food. It’s more of a lifestyle than a cuisine. When you go out with friends to a bar and have some tapas with beer. I like that atmosphere.”

La Piazza An established Italian fine dining name turns his attention to pizza. The buzz: Antonio Armenio, the man behind Sukhumvit’s 12-yearold Italian fine-dining stronghold, Antonio’s, has now followed it up with this more casual pizzeria and restaurant. The decor: With its faux brickwork and arched windows, La Piazza has an informal feel that's more trattoria than fancy restaurant—a casual space doing simple food for friends and families to share. From the dining room you can look into the semi-open kitchen to see their giant pizza oven. There's also a second floor where a live band plays Fri-Sat. The food and drinks: In contrast to the fine-dining dishes of Antonio’s, La Piazza aims at something a whole lot simpler. And noth-
20
ing reflects this more than the pizza—thin-based, wood-fired pies available in classic flavors like margarita (B250) prosciutto crudo (Parma ham, tomato and mozzarella, B420) and tartufo (truffle, cheese, porcini mushroom and truffle oil, B450) as well as the La Piazza Speciale, which features rich tomato, mozzarella, capsicum, artichoke, pepperoni and mushroom (B300). Their pasta (regular or gluten free) is also a delight, whether as carbonara (with cream, B280), Bolognese (B280) or their own creations like Fiorentina (B280), which features a perfect combination of spinach, mushroom, garlic and cheese. Other Italian staples chart cold cuts (B350690), mushroom soup (B280), minestrone (B250), caprese salad (B450) and mains like veal Milanese (breaded veal, B750), pan-
seared snowfish (B690) and grilled tenderloin (B1,300 for 180g). For something sweet, try the tiramisu (B220) and their homemade ice cream (B120/scoop). The wine list sees a lot of labels from Italy and France with prices starting at B220 by the glass. Why you should care: It’s casual, priced accessibly and from a reliable name—the kind of place that anyone would welcome in their neighborhood. TABLE TALK
NEW AND NOTED
Hidden Mary The minimalist cafe Lazy Mary (386/57 Soi Phaya Nak, Phetchaburi Rd., 095-661-8272) looks like something out of Tokyo (or Chiang Mai). Alongside light bites like paninis and cakes, they do two blends of coffee (from B75) made from locally-roasted beans. Fancier items include the Doppio Vanilla Iced Coffee (B120), which consists of two shots of espresso and two scoops of vanilla ice-cream, and the Happy Hot Chocolate (B120). We also like the super-refreshing (and photogenic) Passionfruit with Berry Ice Cube (B105).
Shake It Off One of Bangkok's freakshake pioneers has opened another branch. Like the original at Terminal 21, the new David’s Bakery at Habito Mall (T77, Sukhumvit Soi 77) continues to deal in super-thick shakes (try the Chocolate Malt Brownie, B270), while there's even more focus on soft-baked cookies (B60-70/piece)
in flavors ranging from Milo and red velvet Nutella to M&Ms and banoffee. Coffee is sourced from Chiang Mai.
Larb is in the Air The new compact joint by the Escapade duo highlights a wellstocked bar, customized cocktails and Isaan-inspired food. Rarb (49 Phra Athit Rd., 081-406-3773) has a bit of a construction site feel—stickered and sprayed zinc roof sheets and bare, cracked concrete—with nostalgic touches courtesy of Thai thriller comics glued on the ceiling and white-out-strewn tables. Behind the bar, mixologist Karn Liangsrisuk rolls out a rotating list of signature drinks, such as the outrageously named Fag Cavity, a bourbon-based long drink mixed with green apple, Thai basil and caramel (B350). The brief food menu highlights secondary cuts of meat, with dishes like larb (with offal, B140 for pork/ B180 for beef), deep-fried beef skirt (B240), blanched pig palate (B140) and stewed pig cartilage with rotating vegetables (B160). Menya Kouji hails from Ibaraki Prefecture on the outskirts of Tokyo, and comes to Bangkok courtesy of chef Tashiro Koji, who also has restaurants in the US, Canada, Philippines and Singapore, where he founded the Ramen Champion outlets. His place in Bangkok has already become a favorite spot for ramen hunters thanks to its salty, creamy and very earthy broth. Situated in Prom Phong's quiet Boulevard 39 complex, the dark space with its red laminate tables, navy chairs and framed pictures of its f o u n d e r w i t h d i f f e re n t J a p a n e s e celebrities is as plain as it gets. The menu, like at so many solid ramen places, is fully described in three languages—Japanese, English and Thai— and the star dish is undoubtedly the tsukemen (dipping ramen, B250). The

Sukhothai’s La Scala epitomizes hotel fine dining. Less stuffy than Le Normandie, it shares the nosebleed prices and veteran staff with a photographic memory of Bangkok’s one percent . The Italian food remains excellent but slip-ups seem to have become more common since late 2015. Sense of occasion remains at its highest, though. The hotel is by Kerry Hills, the interiors by Ed Tuttle and the restaurant itself by Spin, a Japanese Design firm with a string of commissions from the Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton. Bronze and terracotta discreetly reference regional architecture of old while the leather banquettes and glass cubes exude ‘90s Tokyo luxury. Everyone here seems to order the schiacciatina pizza (B790), so you might as well call out for it to the central open kitchen as soon as

broth bursts with flavor from the first bite—a thick, creamy tonkotsu creation that’s tangy and packed with the aroma of miso and dried fish. The noodles are also boiled to soft, springy perfection. Some people might find it too salty, but mix in a spash of the mild, clear soup that’s served alongside it for better balance. We also love the house-favorite Special Ramen (B230), which features molten pork fat, slow-cooked pork-belly chashu and a boiled egg with a perfectly fudgy yolk. This guilty, cholesterol-fueled (but surprisingly palatable) pleasure is something worth trading your monthly fitness regime for. The side dishes are also not to be missed, from the crispy, pan-fried gyoza (B90)—aromatic and stuffed with herbs—to the sweet-soy baigai (Babylon snails, B130)—springy meat packed with the fresh smell of the ocean. We feel slightly let down with the Hokkaido-style fried chicken with spicy sauce (B120): the skin is not as crisp as we’d like for karaage. Still, the meat is tender and, when combined with the dipping sauce, everything falls into place. We’re not surprised that this restaurant constantly pulls in a crowd of Japanese salarymen who add to the lively atmosphere. Thanks to good meals at a very reasonable price and attentive service, this ramen joint is definitely one of the very best in Bangkok.
you wal k in. The thin- crust pizza sandwich stuffed with Parma ham, rocket salad and mascarpone cheese is one of the tastiest things you’ll ever eat. Those watching their carbs can settle for the equally decadent 24-month “Riserva” Parma ham with bufala mozzarella campania (B980), a beautiful globe of gooey, creamy goodness. We wish Scala would dazzle with more than its produce, though. The spaghetti mare (B1,280) uses fresh clams, tiger prawns, mussels and scallops, but the white wine sauce is just good, not weep-worthy. The orecchiette pasta with Italian sausage and broccoli (B980) even verges on stodgy, a flavor combination that neither gels nor contrasts. In pure Italian tradition, you’re meant to top it all off with some gril led meat , like the Australian lamb cutlets (250g, B1,750), a tender rack of meat served with potato mousseline and mushrooms that seem like a bit of an afterthought. Alternatively, there are three fish dishes (B1,900 -2,800) and some highlymarbled Aussie beef (B2,200). To be fair, three courses would be too much food for most of us, meaning the smart way to order here is family-style. It’s been a couple of years since La Scala made it all the way to Top Tables top 10 in Bangkok. The experience feels as luxe as ever, but those in it exclusively for the food can now get more bang for their buck elsewhere.

ART "Dance" by Henri Mattise Buffalo
"Eye Love" by Takashi Murakami Buffalo
Maitree Siriboon, 33, is a Thai artist best known for his contemporary photography that merges elements of local countryside life with cosmopolitan concepts like fashion. For his latest project, dubbed Save Thai Buffalo and New Mosaic Series, the artist paints replica works by famous artists, including Picasso and Warhol, on rescued buffaloes in an attempt to reverse the low image kwai have of being stupid. Here, we speak to him about the inspiration for the project, which runs through Aug 15 at Yenakart Villa (69 Soi Prasat Suk, Yen Akat Rd, 02-235-9800). BATTLE
CAPTURING THE INTANGIBLE
Artists Gumsak Atipiboonsin and Taweesak Ujugatanond use the gallery space as a battleground for their own set of abstract paintings, which will all be displayed in opposition with one another. Through Aug 14. The Adler Subhashok Gallery, 160/3 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-662-0299. Free.
Sanitas Pradittasnee presents 10 sculptures and art installations that explore forms of belief and assigned meanings in life. Through Aug 13. The Art Center, 7/F, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University, Phaya Thai Rd., 02-2182-965.
How did you come up with the idea for this project? It started in 2010 during another project, titled Dream of Beyond, which featured me modeling with buffaloes to explore how the relationship between us and them has changed in recent times. Then in 2013 I saw an art project by Chiang Mai Zoo where they painted an elephant to look like a panda. I found it extremely funny and loved the idea of using animals as a canvas for art. What sparked your love for buffaloes? My family had a lot of buffaloes when I was a kid growing up in Isaan. It sparked my strong affection for them and all animals. They are very intelligent animals that deserve more respect from Thai people. Right now, Thais consider buffaloes to be stupid—the word “buffalo” is equivalent to a swear word. This art project hopes to change that stigma. How did you rescue these animals from the slaughterhouse? I managed to save three buffaloes, one of which is still a baby. I used my own money to pay farmers in Ubon to provide proper care for them and not kill them. In the future, I plan to do art projects to raise money specifically for this cause.
KID WITHIN BY SUNDAE KIDS
LIFELINES
The Bangkok illustrator hosts his first exhibition, taken from his "Kid Within" series that captures fun, nostalgic moments from childhood. The opening exhibition features live music from emerging rock band Marathon, as well as a live illustration drawing session. Through Sep 16. Pullman Bangkok Hotel G, 188 Silom Rd., 02-238-1991.
Artist Kamol Tamseewan presents a series of abstract black and white portraits capturing people's strong facial lines as they experience strong emotions. Through Aug 31. Koi Art Gallery, 245 Sukhumvit Soi 31 (Soi Sawasdee), 02-662-3218.
What made you choose to paint the works of Picasso, Warhol, Klimt and Murakami? They are artists that I have admired for a long time—particularly Andy Warhol, to the point where I gave myself the pen name “Andy Warhol of the Mekong.” Aside from that, I wanted to select pieces that are simple and not too complex to understand, because I wanted the project to be easy for people of all ages to relate to. Actually, that’s one of the most important techniques of creating art which you hope will make an impact. It needs to reach people of all ages, classes and backgrounds.
SOLO SHOW BY PATIPAT CHAIWITESH
THE WAY OF QUALITY LIVING

American photographer Christopher Wise, owner of WTF, presents an exhibition documenting Bangkok's architectural fabric, from decaying '70s buildings to air-conditioned skyscrapers reminiscent of Singapore and Dubai's buildings. Through Aug 14, 6pm. WTF Gallery & Café, 7 Sukhumvit Soi 51, 02-662-6246.

What was it like working with the buffaloes? How did they react to getting painted? It was quite difficult because these aren’t trained animals; they are used to doing their own thing on a farm. I had to be careful with them and let them have their way sometimes. But having lived with buffaloes before, I’m quite familiar with how to interact with them. I made sure they got to know me and my smell, so that they could feel comfortable around me. The most difficult bit was the actual painting process, since they often got ticklish due to the paintbrush. Also, it took them some time to get used to the flash from the camera.
What impact do you hope this project will have? I want to change the idea that Thais have of buffaloes as being dumb, inferior animals. If you’ve never interacted with one before, you may not realize that they are complex animals with plenty of uses and can be beautiful enough to feature in artworks like my own. At the same time, this project aims to make a much bigger statement about Thai society. Thai people have a tendency to be quite classist, for instance we look down on the working class or service people in restaurants. It’s something that has become a normal part of our society. Therefore, this project aims to change perspectives not just about how we treat buffaloes, but how we treat each other. Interview by Bonnie Sananvatananont
