A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week. Osaka’s oozing Pablo cheese tarts are coming to Bangkok Move over Beard Papa’s, there’s a new Japanese treat in town: Pablo. Since launching around two years ago, this bakery’s creamy pudding-like cheese tart has been lauded as one of Osaka’s must-try treats. Brace yourself for some lengthy queues when it lands at Siam Paragon in early October. Criminal suspects have lost their time in the limelight In a bitter blow to Thairath, Dear Leader this week banned the archaic parading of suspects in front of the media as the police congratulate themselves for an unfinished job well done. Could this mark a turning point in our general-politicians’ unique understanding of human rights? Some of Bangkok’s best kitchens are donating pasta profits to Italy earthquake relief Last month’s 6.2-magnitude earthquake in central Italy killed 292 people and caused severe damage to Amatrice, the birthplace of pasta all’amatriciana (tomato sauce, pork jowl, pecorino cheese). You can help out. Following the lead of Italian food blogger Paulo Campana and restaurants all around the world, Bangkok’s Appia, Peppina, Vesper, La Bottega di Luca, Il Fumo, Pizza Massilia, Seven Spoons and Lenzi are pledging to donate B100 from every plate of pasta all’amatriciana sold to the Italian Red Cross. Mahakan Fort has made its final stand Twelve houses gone; 45 more to go. In a triumph for bureaucracy over reasoned thought, the 25-year-old eviction notice for the Mahakan Fort Community on Rattanakosin Island has been put into effect. And for what? A public park which seemingly no one—BMA officials included—really seems to want. Thailand’s mall obsession knows no end Central has announced it will be building new malls in Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Nakhon Ratchasima and Samut Sakhon—all to be completed by 2018. On top of that, Bangkok malls including CentralWorld, CentralPlaza Pinklao and CentralPlaza Bangna will all be getting much needed facelifts, while CentralFestival Phuket gets a massive relaunch as Central Phuket, with the addition—among other things—of an aquarium, indoor floating market and indoor forest. Hooray!

HOT OR NOT

Hot: Toad

Not: Fugu

Could toad be the new fugu fish? The notoriously deadly Japanese delicacy for which diners will pay ¥20,000 (B6,600) has found a rival in the bloated amphibian. Following the deaths of two men in Nan, Thailand’s Disease Control Department put out a memo warning everyone that eating toad has the very real possibility of killing you. Good news for Thailand, then, as locally foraged food can be had a 1,000th of the price of Japanese sushi.

INTERVIEW

Hot: Drugs

Not: Populists

Well this is a bit confusing for us dyed-in-the-wool liberals. Filipino president Rodrigo Duterte is awash in the blood of alleged drug dealers, just like our own democratically-elected populist, Thaksin, was before him. Meanwhile, our military junta is relaxing legislation for drugs like marijuana, yaba and kratom. Less democracy means better drug policies?

Hot: Rubber

Not: Octopus

Rubber Land (see page 9) is a new theme park in Pattaya where kids can go bounce off rubber walls, stick to rubber slides and try on giant rubber flip-flops. It’s all a wonderful mind spin to think that anyone ever came up with the idea, let alone spent B300 million making it. It also sounds like a hell of a lot more fun than chewing through most of the rubbery octopus dishes we’ve been served at Bangkok tapas bars recently.

Hot: Profit

Not: Preservation

Last time the British Embassy sold off a portion of its land we all got the gift of Central Embassy—a name that could pretty quickly become obsolete now that rumors are flying that the embassy itself is up for sale. The asking price for a charming colonial mansion in palatial landscaped grounds: B18 billion. We’re guessing the redecoration will involve a bulldozer.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

4

Comprising teams from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) and Khon Kaen University, the Chao Phraya for All group has been hired by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) at a cost of B126 million to study and design a much-contested 14km riverside promenade. After seven months’ work of study, the group will unveil its findings and design this Sep 9, as part of a greater 140km mega project planned for the riverway. Spokesperson Asst. Prof. Dr. Antika Sawadsri gives us some insight into the project. How has the study gone so far? Our study only takes in the stretch of river between Rama 7 and Phra Pinklao bridges, a total of 14km. We split that distance into 12 separate plans, which have become integrated over time. We’re primarily looking at how to transform riverside areas into recreational spaces, parks and connecting walkways and bicycle lanes. What do you make of the controversy surrounding the original plan? The plan that was made public had a road as wide as 19 meters overhanging the river. This model actually came from a private company that was hired before us. We were pretty concerned by this, too, but when we read the actual terms of reference [TOR], we discovered the reality was totally different. The TOR makes no reference to such a road, just a walkway. Of course, when you do a public project, it’s normal that some people will speak out. You’ve only spent seven months on this study; is that enough for such a large project? How long is long enough? That’s the question. We weren’t the first one

to conduct a study into this riverside project. The Ministry of Transport’s Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning [OTP] has already done their job by outlining the 140km riverway. You can see their master plan at www.chaoprayariverrim.com. They spent nine months on this study. The Yannawa Riverwalk by Urban Design and Development Center [UddC] spent a couple years studying their plan from scratch. But we didn’t have to start from zero. We’ve been able to use OTP’s original study as a reference, and our strong design team of architects and engineers have worked hard to get the plan done in seven months. We plan to deliver the study to the BMA by the end of September. The project seems preoccupied with giant infrastructure; what about plans for communities by the river? We have to decide whether individual communities have historical value or not. If not, some will have to relocate. The government will, of course, provide compensation and find them a new home. For communities deemed important, we will need to get their approval to include them in the design. If they clearly state that

they don’t want anything to do with the project, then we will bypass their community. But if the community wants to participate, we can adjust to suit their specific needs. For example, the Wat Devaraja Kunchorn community has said they don’t want us to build a giant pavilion in front of their temple but they still want a walkway. We can adapt to their needs. The original plan stipulated a budget of B14 billion for 14km. Will you require the same amount? We can’t estimate that now. The original plan was designed with a road that cars can drive on but our design is for a walkway, bike lanes and parks. So the budget might be cheaper for the walkway and bike lanes, but building parks may push the price up. When will construction start? The original plan was to start by early next year. Our job is to deliver the design, but the construction and any changes to the design will be totally up to the BMA. But if they change anything, we will have our original study as evidence that we proposed a different design. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

Adorable Ari Your complete guide to living the slow life in Ari. By Earn Saenmuk

T

he leafy sois and quiet village feel of Ari have become the stuff of Bangkok legend. On paper (and on Instagram), these streets lined with food trucks and coffee shops appear to be the perfect place to call home. But with new condos constantly sprouting up, replacing the stately family homes of old and disturbing the peace, what’s it like to live in Ari? Here’s what you should know.

Accommodation PPPP

Sutdrip Cafe

Lay Lao

Although there are still a lot of old houses in Ari, more and more developments and high-rises dominate the neighborhood. (Some locals often complain that Ari's renowned peace and quiet has been replaced by the sound of jackhammers.) At the luxurious end of the scale you have Noble RE:D (goo.gl/V9Cpvo) by Noble development, located only 80 meters from BTS Ari, which rents at B25,000-B55,000/month or sells from B4.8 million, and Rhythm Phahon-Ari (goo.gl/z52Q0K) by Asian Property (AP), which rents for B16,000-60,000/ month, and sells from B4.1 million. Even more high-end is Le Monaco Residences (www.le-monaco.com) by UPMOST, which rents for B45,000-B110,000/month, and sells from B9.4 million. Move further away from the BTS line to discover more economical options, including Pruksa Real Estate’s The Seed Phaholyothin (goo.gl/ UhdKx4, rent for B10,000-B16,000/month; buy from B3 million). Cheaper, older "court" accommodation is available deep down Aree Samphan—try Boonareya Court (www.boonareyacourt.com, from B18,000/month for a studio).

Dining

PPPP There once was a time when Ari’s dining scene could be derided as cute coffee shops and fusion Japanese-slash-Italian eateries—not anymore. Classics like Salt (Ari Soi 4) and Pladib (Ari Samphan Soi 7) remain to serve pizza and sashimi to the beautiful people amid raw, modernist settings. But there’s now much more diversity, from the street-style Korean food at Joha (59 Ari Soi 2) and Mexican of Casa Azul (Phahon Yothin Soi 7) to the solid Isaan bites of Lay Lao (65-67 Phahon Yothin Soi 7). Nestled in the backstreets is Rock Restaurant and Bar (7/1 Phahon Yothin Soi 9), whose flavorful Asian fusion has made it a fixture in our annual Top Tables guide. Streetlevel hipster favorites include the grab-and-go grilled sandwiches of Bush by Paper Butter (Ari Soi 1) and the seafood platters of food truck pioneer Summer Street (Phahon Yothin Soi 2), while you’ll also find plenty of delicious street food at the entrance to Soi Ari—we recommend the som tam and guay tiew stalls. Of course, Ari wouldn’t be Ari without the cafes. Aside from a branch of the ever-growing Casa Lapin chain (Noble Reform, Phahon Yothin Soi 7), our top picks are Common Room x Ari (Phahon Yothin Soi 5), which serves top quality beans from local roasters like Ceresia and Brave, and Sutdrip (128/10 Phahon Yothin Soi 2), whose drip coffeespecializing barista just won big at the National Thailand Brewers Cup competition—find her inside bike store-slash-cafe Aran Bicicletta (128/10 Phahon Yothin Soi 2).

6

Community PPPP

With its mix of houses, new condos, and retro “court” accommodation, Ari is home to a real mix of young and old, with lots of families. Some have been here generations, while others have arrived more recently seeking out that elusive Ari lifestyle. As for expats, you can expect a healthy presence of young professionals and ever-rotating NGO crowds.

Transportation PPPP On top of the very convenient BTS station, which can whisk you off to Sukhumvit in no time, Ari is also accessible on over 20 buses such as the A2 (between Don Mueang International Airport and Victory Monument) and the infamous bus number 8 (between Bang Kapi and Memorial Bridge—not recommended if you don’t have great balance). It’s also perfect for biking as there are many shaded residential trails. Traffic generally is not as bad as in Sathorn and Sukhumvit, which can even make taxis a bit more accommodating, too. The nearest high entraces can be accessed through Rama 6 Road and Phahon Yothin Soi 2.

Ari’s streets are certainly leafy, but that doesn’t exactly mean there’s lots of green space. You won’t find too many parks or public spaces here, though there is something of a hidden gem opposite the Revenue Department at the back-end of Soi Ari, where oldies gather to exercise. Elsewhere, Aree Garden mall (Ari Samphan Soi 11) combines classy architecture with a spacious grass lawn. Just don’t be fooled by Banana Family Park’s name— you won’t find any trees or grass here.

Nightlife PPPP

Ari isn’t exactly known for its nightlife, but that’s not to say you can’t enjoy a chill tipple. Much of the action centers on the corner of Ari Soi 4, where Salt offers an elegant outdoor drinking spot complete with a decent selection of wine and cocktails. Across the road, the same crowd of affluent 20-somethings can be found at Aree (Soi Ari), a popular spot for afterwork drinks owned by the same people as Salt. The style here is more throwback Thai—live cover bands and bottles of whiskey. Beer lovers can head to Ari Soi 1 for O’Glee, an Irish bar that feels more like a friend’s house. Props go not only to the craft beer selection, but also the indie soundtrack featuring The Smiths and The Cure.

Work & Play For those looking to live the digital nomad dream, there are many, many cafes and co-working spaces dotted around the neighborhood. Here are a few of our favorites—and more:

How has Ari changed recently? I think it’s more pretentious now. There are so many “hip” restaurants and cafes. When I was younger I used to think of it as a place where my friend’s houses were, but now it’s all “let’s meet at this chic restaurant.”

What do you love about Ari? It’s easy to commute from Ari to other places in Bangkok. There are expressways and the BTS, but it’s not as chaotic as Sukhumvit. Ari is like the capital of northern Bangkok—you don’t have to endure the traffic and still have everything you need. There’s a very low crime rate, too.

Why did you choose to live in Ari? We visited a lot of areas and Ari felt the most home-like to us. It's a convenient location that still feels small and quiet. There are many families living in the area and quiet sois that can feel like you're not in a big city. There are also plenty of great food and coffee places too.

HUA HIN

Good Virus Seenspace Hua Hin has some exciting new tenants, most notably Virus Space and Cafe (081-668-7414, www.fb.com/virusspaceandcafe), run by the reputed contemporary artist, and proud Hua Hin resident, Thaweesak “Lolay” Srithongdee and his artist wife, Prae. This “anything creative” space operates as a gallery, workshop, screening room and music venue. The cafe side of things is all about moka pot coffee, made with beans from Papae, Chiang Mai, roasted by Bangkok’s Brave Roasters—try the affogato (B100) or chocolate milk coffee (B95-100). The first photo exhibition, “Particle of the Universe,” comes from young Thai artist Peduckk, known for her dreamy travel pictures on Instagram (showing until Nov 15). Opposite Virus is Dr. Doon Studio, which sells vinyl records and turntables, plus music and art books. The real-life Dr. Doon, a self-professed music guru, wanders the premises discussing anything music-related with visitors.

PHUKET

Road to Rio Its name may be a reference to anything hailing from the Brazilian city of Rio, but Phuket Town’s Cariocas Bistro and Lounge (Baan Phu Anda Hotel, 371/22-26 Yaowarat Rd., Talat Yai, 076-218-403, www.fb.com/cariocaslounge) serves impressive Mexican bar food along with creative drinks from German mixologist Florian Niessing. The cocktail list spotlights Twining tea home infusions and updated classics like aged negronis. Bites include nachos, quesadillas, pizza and fresh poached prawn ceviche.

PATTAYA

Learn Rubber, Baby Rubber Land (038-413-490 to 5, www.thairubberland.com) is a new edutainment museum dedicated to, you guessed it, Thailand’s rubber production. Located inside Central Pattaya on Sukhumvit Road, the 4,400-sq-meter space consists of four main zones, including The Plantation, a simulation of a rubber forest using 3D projection mapping; The Factory, which documents the creation of latex through various industrial processes; Rubber in Life Zone, where you will find giant-size versions of everyday rubber items; and Rubber Fantasy, whose spiral slide and other attractions add a bit of fun to proceedings. The B300-million museum is currently offering free entrance for Thais until Sep 30. The normal rate is B100 for Thais and B200 for foreigners.

BALI

Carry On Glamping Steer clear of the nefarious nightlife on your next trip to Bali with a stay at the upscale Menjangan Dynasty Resort, Beach Camp and Dive Center (mdr.pphotels.com). Located on an isolated peninsula in the northwest of the island, the resort offers 24 beach camp “safari tents” and four “safari tent villas”—don’t worry, though, you’ll be far from slumming it thanks to mod-cons like flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and aircon. The resort also boasts its own diving center operating trips to Menjangan Island, a national park with the impressive backdrop of active volcano Ijen. They are now offering a four-day-threenight Glamping Adventure package, which involves one night at sister property Bali Dynasty Resort in Denpasar and a day tour of the temples. The package costs you US$639 (B22,134) for two people, while normal rates start from US$450 (B15,587) per night.

Fuji cameras have put arguably the world’s most popular mirrorless camera, the X-A2, to bed, replacing it with the Fuji X-A3. This new model keeps the retro looks while adding special functions for selfies and touch-screen operation instead of the old dial. Now onto the really good stuff: the image resolution jumps from 16.3MP to 24.2MP, there’s Wi-Fi connectivity that allows you to control it with your smartphone, a 16-50mm lens and 10 advanced filters. The debut price is B23,990 or B27,990 with an Instax Share SP-2 printer. Now available at Fuji stores nationwide.

Travlmind sells modestly styled, genuine leather bags that’ve been vegetable-tanned (meaning stained with tree bark, go figure). Prices aren’t cheap—unless you usually shop at YSL— but we’re promised they only use the really top-notch, fullgrain stuff paired with solid brass hardware, while most brands only use zinc. Grab a Berlin Weekender for B10,850, a Melbourne Messenger for B8,550, or a Venice Tote for B4,950. And good news if you live in Thailand, because shipping’s free and your order will arrive the next day. See the full list of products and shop online at www.travlmind.com.

Take a 10-minute walk from BTS Mo Chit and you’ll find Bangkok’s latest co-working temple, Good Space, where an open, industrial room with a hint of modernism greets those in need of a cheap office. There’s a genuinely creative edge here, too, shunning the tech start-up aesthetic in favor of a more makeshift indie vibe, all bathed in natural light and looking out onto plenty of greenery. You still get the regular meeting rooms, hot desks, private studios and even a gallery space (which cometimes hosts live music). Craving an avocado toastie or perfectly poured latte? Head to nextdoor cafe, Seven. Co-working sets you back B250 for a one-day pass, including complimentary drink. 1032/136 Phahon Yothin Soi 18/1, 095-804-4610. Perfect Pairings As part of Mekhong Elite Table, Bangkok’s favorite restaurants are rolling out progressive food and drink pairings.

Jim Thompson

The dish: Southern Thai green curry with roasted Australian beef tenderloin and bird’s eye chili. The drink: Mekhong Mantra (Mekhong with ginger ale finished off with a squeeze of fresh lime and garnished with a slice of ginger), whose light and clear body, and dash of ginger, makes it the ideal accompaniment for a rich and flavorful curry dish. Jim Thompson, 6/1 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama 1 Road, Bangkok, 02 612 3601

Osha Thai restaurant and bar

The dish: Osha Ocean Floral Salad which comprises flower petals topped with marinated Hokkaido scallops dressed with two Thai-style spicy sauces. The drink: Mekhong Hanuman (Mekhong and coconut water, garnished with eatable gold leaf and served with dry-baked coconut), whose aromatic coconut character helps soften the spicy flavor of the salad. Osha Thai restaurant and bar, 99 Wireless Rd., 02-256-6555 Osha Osha Cafe, Warehouse 10, Asiatique, 02-046-9441

Vivarium by Chefs Ministry Blue Elephant cooking school and restaurant The dish: Crispy-fried snow fish topped with sweet and spicy sauce, served with Thai riceberry rice cooked in coconut water. The drink: Mekhong Thai Sabai (Mekhong, lime juice, sugar syrup, 4-5 Thai sweet basil leaves and a splash of soda water), a refreshing summer cocktail whose sour profile goes perfectly with the dish’s spicy sauce. Blue Elephant Cooking School & Restaurant, 233 Sathorn Rd., 02-673-9353. BTS Surasak

The dish: Thai-style lobster fishcakes served on lobster shells with lemon wedge. The drink: Mekhong Sparkling (Mekhong, lemon bitters, lychee syrup, prosecco and one sugar cube), whose blend of bubbles and hint of herbs go wonderfully with the lobster and make this a smooth and classy combo. Vivarium by Chefs Ministry, 3675 Rama 4 Rd., 02-267-9508

The Art of Food and Cocktail Pairing The perfect pairing requires a chef and mixologist to work closely together to ensure the flavors of a dish blend beautifully with those of a drink. Thai dishes are renowned for using lots of herbs, and what makes Mekhong Premium stand out as a real Thai spirit is its hint of herb in the taste. The perfect pairing is an unforgettable experience that gives diners a heightened appreciation of both the food and cocktail.

Sushi Surprise If you’re not paying attention, you’ll walk straight past Japanese restaurant Sushi Misaki. The blank wooden facade hides an equally minimal interior, with only one sushi counter and 10 attached seats. Behind the counter, Shizuoka-born chef Masahiro Misaki (formerly of Nippon Tei) serves an omakase (chef’s selection) meal of about 20 items, including appetizers, 12 nigiri sushi selections, a sushi roll, tamago (baked egg), miso soup and a dessert, for B4,000 per head. The chef makes his sushi Edomae style, meaning the fish has been through a process of aging, curing or fermenting before being put together with either white- or red-vinegar sushi rice. Expect both seasonal fish and classic offerings like fresh Ishigeki clam, plum vinegar-marinated iwashi (sardine), melt-in-your-mouth otoro (fatty tuna) served on flavorful red sushi rice, and the chef's signature toro-taku (chopped tuna and pickled radish) roll. You'll then cleanse your palate with the custard pudding-like sweet tamago, which is crisp like a brulee on top, before ending the meal with mizu shingen mochi (water mochi). Two seatings per day. G/F, Rain Hill, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-258-1783. Open Tue-Sun 6-11:30pm. BTS Phrom Phong

Girl Power

Health First

The Peninsula welcomes Shanghai-based, Peruvian celebrity chef Eduardo Vargas from Sep 29-Oct 2. The chef first tasted success at Singapore’s Coco Caribe and Brewerks, before venturing to Shanghai, where he's become something of a celeb for his work at a long list of restaurants including his own Latin-specializing Azul Tapas Lounge. From Sep 29-30, he'll offer a five-course set dinner at Jesters (B3,600 per person, B1,200 extra for beverage pairing). Some of the dishes to expect include lobster ceviche with citrus “tiger’s milk,” corn and sweet potato; red snapper with chupe sauce and Peruvian ravioli; and beef tenderloin anticucho (meat kebab). Or go for either the dinner buffet (B1,800) at River Cafe & Terrace on Oct 1 or the Sundays at The Pen brunch on Oct 2 (B2,200), both of which will serve his food. 333 Charoennakorn Rd., 02-861-2888. Free ferry from BTS Saphan Taksin

Women take the lead at Bo.lan's latest wine-pairing event on Sep 8-11, when three big players in the food and beverages field join forces to pair the best of Thai cuisine and wine. Duangporn “Bo” Songvisava, Bo.lan’s resident chef, recognized as Asia’s Best Female chef by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2013, takes care of the traditional Thai food, while Visootha “Nikki” Lohitnavy, Thailand’s first female winemaker, provides selected bottles from GranMonte winery. To top things off, Benjawan Wisootsat, of Fin wine importer and distributor, demonstrates the art of pairing local wine with Thai cuisine. A set dinner with wine pairing will cost you B3,980 per person. 24 Sukhumvit Soi 53, 02-260-2961. BTS Thong Lo

Le Meridien Surawong has just unveiled what it's calling a Healthy Sunday Brunch. Forget bacon, full-fat fry-ups or even an egg station; this one’s big on sashimi, detox juices and lean meats. (Don't worry, there’s still pan-fried foie gras—if you don't mind the judgmental stares.) In between return trips to the "shake-it-yourself" salad bar, you can get a BMI test and consultation with BNH Hospital nutritionists or get workout tips from the swole dudes in True Fitness uniforms. Diners are also given a diet roadmap that suggests dishes based on conditions like high blood pressure or stress. Taking place every last Sunday of the month, the next brunch is on Sep 25 (10am-2.30pm) at B1,350 per person (including one Boston lobster per table). Latest Recipe, 40/5 Surawong Rd., 02-232-8888

COCKTAILS

Fast Train Ratchada Train Market’s best bars for a cheap night out far from Sathorn or Thonglor.. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj Speakerbox

Sorry I’m Gay

B

angkok is home to some of the world’s coolest night markets, but what sets Rod Fai Market 2 in Ratchada (Esplanade Complex, next to MRT Thai Cultural Center) apart is its selection of bars promising cheap yet quality cocktails, live music and top DJs. Here are our four top picks.

Speakerbox

Sorry I’m Gay

The buzz: This might look like your regular cruddy NEW! Train Market dive pumping out live music in a space way too small for live music, but the roster of bands is worth giving a damn about. The music: Like what you used to find at the dearly departed Cosmic Cafe—the Speakerbox series of gigs has already welcomed top bands like Stylish Nonsense and Degaruda, with plenty more to come. The food and drinks: The rotating international craft beers will set you back B220, while the local stuff is sold at B150 per bottle. Brothers cider is B240. Good news is Rama 9 hangout Fatty’s Bar and Diner has just opened its burger kitchen here, serving up awesome burgers and hotdogs. The crowd: Thais and plenty of expats with a thirst for underground music and craft beer.

The buzz: This quirkily named, miniscule cocktail bar plays host to nightly live DJs. The actual bar is made from old Volkswagen parts while a small covered dancefloor offers a place to cut loose. The music: These DJs aren’t guys pressing play on their Apple Music playlist, but some of the top names in town taking a night off from Sukhumvit. Think all-vinyl sets from Moola, techno and house from Jamie James or Sammy. The drinks: The fruity cocktails are all priced at B200 and we’ll vouch for the Sorry I’m Gay (vodka, cream de banana, Sangsom, red grenadine, lemon juice, syrup), Ocean Gay (vodka, blue Curacao, guava juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice, syrup) and Sawatdee I’m Gay (dark rum, lemon juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, red grenadine). The crowd: Mostly Thais who have a taste for good electronic music, but aren’t in the mood for full-on clubbing.

The buzz: This is another no-frills bar with a retro edge. The grimy brick walls are lined with old-school advertisements and other brica-brac, while mismatched wooden tables and chairs offer a space to chat with friends—if you can hear each other over the music. The music: Nineties and ‘00s rock like Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, Oasis and Red Hot Chili Peppers blares over the stereo. The food and drinks: The signature cocktails are cheap and cheerful, like the Barbados Surprise (rum, blue Curacao, orange juice and red grenadine, B150), super-strong strawberry mojitos (B150) or the pina colada made with whipped cream instead of coconut cream (B150). Wednesday ladies night offers buy-one-get-one-free from 7-9pm. Snacks have a Japanese theme with picks like karaage chicken (B90) and edamame (B50). The crowd: Very Thai, very loose. Open Tue-Sun 6pm till late. 085-244-3232, www.fb.com/ thebartrainmarket

Ratchada Train Market

Dot Box The buzz: A classic shipping container bar that puts the focus on cheap booze and pumping electro music. The music: Live DJs spin electronic pop on Fri and Sat nights, with EDM to liven things up late in the night. The rest of the week is your regular mix of lively pop music. The food and drinks: The jasmine margarita (tequila, vodka, triple sec, lemon juice and jasmine flavored syrup garnished with jasmine flowers, B159) is a must-try cocktail, while JW Black on the rocks (available with apricot or almond flavored liqueur) will appeal to cheapskates at just B159. They’ll also let you bring in food from elsewhere around the market, so no need to fill up on needless bar snacks. The crowd: Electro-loving party people.

Chunky Thailand's national culinary team fries up burgers and breakfast-y favorites. The buzz: Did you know Thailand has a national culinary team? This casual new restaurant comes from a group of its former members, headed by the Dusit Thani College-trained Eakkachai Saengkardsanee. The decor: A good recap of the trending cafe-culture decor: floorto-ceiling windows, wood-heavy furnishings, minimal white space with tweaked Edison light bulbs. Everything points to a warm and welcoming vibe. Step inside and you’ll see the coffee and bakery counter on your right, where the chefs bake their own bread and pastries fresh on-site. There’s also a mezzanine, which you can book for a private party. The food and drinks: The house-made brioche buns take center

stage, accompanied by equally comforting burgers and breakfast dishes. The all-American Chunky beef burger (B295) slaps together an Australian beef patty, a house-made mayo-based “secret” sauce, cheddar cheese, sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, tomato, shallots and some greens. There’s also a pork option available at B265. Other specialty burgers include the sliced beef burger (B310), which features sliced New Zealand sirloin with "three-day simmer" brown sauce, mushroom and caramelized onions, and the crispy chicken and Caesar burger (B245), featuring romaine lettuce, bacon, crispy-fried chicken and Caesar dressing. Brunch dishes, served daily from 11am-4pm, also play with the burger concept, like the croque madame-derived “holy cheese burger” (B295) and Benedict burger (B260). Order up Caesar chips (B170) and poutine (B225) or choose

a healthier option like the dieter’s salad (B190). Also don’t miss chef Eakkachai’s capellini pasta with a creamy bisque sauce and battered prawn (B285), which won him a competition in Malaysia. To drink, try hot chocolate truffle (B130), which sees housemade chocolate truffles and hot milk served separately. Why you should care: The young chefs get creative with their burgers and brunch dishes here, in addition to a wide variety of other cuisines. TABLE TALK

NEW AND NOTED

As Always With its bright white walls, sun-dappled lighting and dangling greenery, Wie Immer (416/10 Thonglor Soi 14) makes for a peaceful retreat in the center of Thonglor. Its menu comprises traditional Thai treats alongside Western pastries. One particular highlight is the purple sweet potato waffle with mushrooms (B125)—salty yet sweet. Cafe lattes (B70) served in classic blue and white ceramics add to the homey picture.

Round and Round With a whopping four floors, new cafe-slash-working space Round About (192/4 Sukhumvit Soi 63, 089-038-7860) is as comfortable as it is functional. Workspaces are rented out at B180 a day or B100 for less than three hours, with customers also given access to free legal services. While the coffee comes from Chiang Mai, the food is Western, albeit with a

few Thai influences. Their signature dessert is a vanilla pancake with orange sauce (B180) that is served with a giant scoop of ice cream. On the weekends the cafe hosts a book club and coffee workshops.

Coffee Antics Suwapol “Gong” Phanpakorn of Ebisu Sushi has taken a new direction with this inviting cafe located only a few steps away from BTS Ekkamai. Crazy About Cafe (Ekkamai Bus Terminal, Sukhumvit Rd., 099-424-2664) serves international brunch and dessert all day long with highlights like bacon cheese croissant (B125), omu-rice with hamburg and demiglace (B195) and fruity waffle with ice cream (B185). T h i s m a t t e r- o f- f a c t l y n a m e d restaurant, owned by two American restaurateurs, one from Texas, carries a serious bar mood despite its daylong operating hours. The decor plays around with a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) theme, with a painting of a skull-faced lady greeting you at the door—a rather more macabre picture than the usual brightly-colored walls. The owners boast about the use of imported Mexican chilies as well as some specific breeds of corn and tomatoes grown on their own farm in Saraburi. The placemat menu features Tex-Mex favorites like nachos (B365), chili con carne (spicy minced pork stew, B400) and fajitas (B440-570), along with some more traditional Mexican fare. The kitchen nails the recommended wet burrito (B430): hearty and flavorful seasoned ground beef smothered in chili con carne,

Endo Sushi HHHH J a p a n e s e. 2 / F, T h e Ta s te T h o n g l o r, Thonglor Soi 11, 02-712-5211. Open TueSun 11:30am-2:30pm, 5:30 -10:30pm. BBB-BBBB F

The glass elevator shafts, jazzy soundtrack and twinkling lights of The Taste Thonglor community mall are a million miles from the brisk trading atmosphere of Japan’s Osaka Fish Market. That’s where Endo Sushi first started out four generations ago, and today exists as the market’s tourist hot-spot. Here in Bangkok, Endo Sushi Thonglor belongs to that league of sushi restaurants which follow a pre-aburi-volcano-crispy-roll model. You have nigiri, sashimi, yaki, tempura and that’s your lot, all served from an austere counter manned by four sushi chefs and delivered by shuffling, kimono-clad wait staff. The result is classy but not stuffy; hushed but not somber. It’s a lovely little spot, more upscale than its mother branch, serving food which not so long ago would have been considered up there with Bangkok’s sushi finest. Sets of five nigiri cost B450, each piece featuring

cheese and sour cream. Another hit is the tender chicken breast fajitas (B440), served on a hot plate with flour tortillas and side guacamole, cheese and sour cream. We really rate this guacamole (B250 for a full serving), which is light and fresh, while the sopa de lima (Mexican lime soup, B150), a slightly sour chicken soup, also helps to cut through what is otherwise a very rich meal. On our last visit, though, the chicken mole (B350) was a letdown. The brown mole sauce did feature the expected deep and complex flavors, with some chocolate notes standing out, but it came with lean chicken meat that was rather too dry and difficult to enjoy. On the plus side, dessert spotlights a nice mostachon (Mexican meringue cake, B220) that’s sweet, nutty and dense, balanced out by cream cheese and strawberries on top. What this spot lacks in atmosphere (our last visit on a Saturday night was a super-sad, super-quiet affair), it makes up for with a lengthy drinks list—try Catrina’s Kiss of Death cocktail (habaneroinfused tequila, grapefruit juice, grenadine, soda, B270). In a town increasingly swamped with Mexican restaurants, The Mexican is a solid enough Tex-Mex contender, though the higher-than-usual prices don’t translate to the liveliest of atmospheres. a generously sliced chunk of fresh fish atop malty rice, just the right temperature and so softly pushed together the grains part in your mouth. The hamachi (amberjack) tastes sweet, the toro (tuna) metallic, the engawa (halibut muscle) rich and the uni (sea urchin) decadent and custardy (if a little too slimy for the uni big leagues). The tempura prawns (B400 for five) are lightly battered and cooked to such a soft degree that you still get that fresh-prawn, mouthcoating texture. In all, a sushi restaurant with little to nitpick about beyond a salmon shioyaki (B350) so salty it dehydrates your mouth. In style and quality Endo is very close to Sakuragawa Sushi at Asoke. There, a 10-piece nigiri set will cost you B1,500, and once you’ve had your fill at Endo the bill will probably come out around the same (or more if you’re drinking). You don’t get any dessert list, but you do get a short and rather pricey selection of wine. Junmai daiginjo sake starts at B800 (Dassai 50), while the lesser stuff begins at B380 (Karakuchi Namacho). If you want your sushi blowtorched and topped with Matsuzaka beef then forget Endo and stick with Nippon Kai; if you want to experience something close to the low-key sushi counters of Japan, go with Endo—the sound of those shuffling waitresses will soon make you forget the community mall outside.
