EXERCISING ANYWHERE Living in the city is hectic and most of your time is dominated by works with very little for relaxing. Many people in the city grab a chance to exercise anywhere they pass by or anything comes their way to keep their health balanced. We usually see some running up and down the stairs instead of using escalators or cycling to work along the safe street or finding an opportunity to walk further by getting off the bus one stop before the destination or shopping in the market before going home to keep their bodies moving. This is well practiced not only in Bangkok but in the big cities all over the world. CITY OF HEALTHY DRINKS Apart from improving digest system, people in the city realize the benefits of drinking sufficient amount of water will also moisturizing skin, refreshing eyes, and preventing kidney stone. So when getting thirsty, sufficient clean fresh water should be the first thing comes to mind, besides the popular cold pressed vegetable and fruit juice also boost up nutrition for yourself.

CHANGE LUNCH OPTION Many office workers are struggled to have same old lunch menu repeatedly or some start to pay attention to ingredients because they are not certain with the level of MSG food outlet added into each dish or adding too strong flavours. Some city people change their options by preparing their DIY lunchbox from home and choosing the ingredients they prefer and mix the flavour moderately and also sharing the healthy balanced diet to people at work.

PRIVATE SPACE IS WAY TO RELAXING Venting out stress can be done in varied ways such as spending time on your own in the space where you can do whatever you want like listing to favourite music and singing out loud in the bedroom or bathroom. You may feel a bit awkward a first few times but once you try, you will understand why many characters in the movies like to sing out loud in the room as it is the perfect way to release stress.

TIME FOR HEALTH IS AFTER WORK : URBANISTAS Allocate time after work for your own healthcare. Urbanista go out for exercise to their preference such as jogging in the park, practicing yoga, kick boxing, sumba dancing or playing badminton to get refreshed from sweating and best of all, having strong body. NO MUSIC NO LIFE Most urbanistas have their own 2 or 3 hit music playlists to listen to in each moment and to allow the music to heal stress caused by surrounding when stuck in the traffic or underground train queue. RESTING BODY AND MIND IS TOGETHER AS ONE “Foot” could be the body parts city people use heavily. Trainers become buddy for many people because they serve comfort in every steps when walking is big part of lifestyle and travelling to various places is unavoidable. Urbanistas choose pair of trainers to match with their working outfit, or comfortable to wear and easy to go exercise afterward. Other than that, office workers are found walking bare-foot on the grass in public park to allow the coolness revamp their weary feet. FEELING GOOD WITH FRIENDSHIP DURING WORKING DAYS When work is overloaded, city people realize that good relationship at work helps increasing energy and happiness during the day. Smiling to colleagues in the morning is a good option to improve relationship between one another and create lively atmosphere.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU READ Some people rest their eyes from looking at computer screen to reading some novels, short stories, or books by favourite authors and letting the books guide you through the alphabets. Many city people are witnessed with books in their hands whilie travelling on the bus, bts, or at the restaurant. URBAN LIFE COMMUNITY Lately, there are groups of likeminds who enjoy gathering for the same causes to work on their favourite activities such as workshop for art lovers or a gather of people who prefer to grow vegetables and share experiences with seeds to the group or a small volunteer group for social works START A NEW DAY WITH A LOVE ONE… Many workacholics miss having dinner with the family. Some people wake up earlier than normal to have time for breakfast cooked by mum and spend time with love one to start a new day with fulfillment.

Booking systems are here (and we’re not ready) Freebird (see page 18) is doing beautiful food in a beautiful space. It also won’t let you talk to a human being to book a table, steering you to an online system that asks for your credit card number. We’re all for holding diners to task, but this system, a first in Bangkok, may come with a painful learning curve. On a recent visit, we booked the wrong day. Oops. Beam got raided by the cops Thaksin-style nightclub law enforcement returned last Saturday when partygoers at Thonglor electro hot-spot Beam were summarily urine tested for drugs. No positive results mean one of two things: the police need better testing equipment or Thonglor clubbers need to live a little. Removing forest encroachers is easy—when they’re poor Still no news on the fate of luxury resort Kirimaya for standing on Khao Yai forest land. Ditto for Bonanza, the resort and race circuit of multi-millionaire Nittichet Sitthicharoenkun. The forest-dwelling community of the Kaeng Krachan district in Petchaburi didn’t get quite the same leeway when they were burned off their land in 2011 by the Abhisit government—a move which the courts last week deemed entirely legal.

A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week.

facebook.com/bkmagazine

Every hip Thai restaurant in town has the exact same playlist Whether we’re eating crab meat pad Thai at Baan Phadthai, snacking on the whole chicken skin at Err or washing down our larb with some potent cocktails at Rarb, it’s always the same music playing in the background. Japanese DJ Moola’s Thai-funk playlist has even made it onto the speakers at Bo.lan. You can now go straight to “bread time” at Suhring No, we’re not saying the German twins’ other dishes aren’t good. But it’s the first thing that came to our mind when we heard the modern German restaurant is now serving an a la carte menu, in addition to their B1,800-2,500 sets. That means you can cut straight to the wonderful sourdough with cold cuts and house made spreads at B440. Bronx Liquid Parlour takes cocktails to the next level At the new spot from former Vogue Lounge guy Hideyuki Saito, every drink comes with its own added extra on the side, like yokan jelly dessert to go with your Bacardi-and-umeshu “Sei” (B380) or homemade pear financier and buttered fig to pair with the butter-washed sazerac (B400). We like.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Gold Line

Not: Purple Line

Even a 50-percent fare discount hasn’t been able to coax passengers onto the BTS Purple Line—maybe something to do with it alighting in an area no one needs to go, 1km from the next nearest metro stop. And now, news has broken of another line slated to start running in 2018. Don’t get too excited, though. The Gold Line will initially only ferry people from Thonburi station to Taksin hospital, which is less than 2km.

INTERVIEW

Hot: Graab

Not: Grab

Two recent prostration-based scandals—an Air Asia hostess who looked at someone the wrong way and a student who dared claim she had an allergy—underscored a shift in Bangkokian attitudes. The internets were largely outraged by the outdated practice. As for Grab Bike? Well they now have to contend with a new competitor: Banana Bike.

Hot: Timing

Not: Innovation

That’s it. We’re all switching to bluetooth headsets. Yes, they’ve been around since forever but Apple just made it official, cables are dead. Since the first iPhone’s white earphones became the ultimate status symbol on the BTS, there hasn’t been something quite like it to express one’s socio-economic background on the go. Apple’s new wireless headphones will finally restore a bit of caste system to our daily commute.

Hot: Food festivals

Not: Food markets

Forget winter markets; food festival season is a thing and it starts next month. Courageous Bangkok, Big Food, Bangkok Gourmet Festival, Eat Drink Pink and So Amazing Chefs all kick off in October and November. Courageous Kitchen, for one, features some of Bangkok’s bona-fide best restaurants—Gaggan, Bunker, Bo.lan, you name it. Always been put off by those B4,000 tasting menus? Now’s your chance (and for charity, too). See page 18.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

4

Earlier this year, one of Thailand’s best-known rappers, Thaitanium’s Khan-ngern Nuenual, 40, traded his fast-paced, rebel life for the monkhood. He has also been busy launching his startup venture, Asiola, the new crowdfunding project which focuses on the arts and creative projects. Now, Khan-ngern plans to launch another crowdfunding platform dedicated to Buddhism, Unity, while also continuing his EDM side project, Bang Bang Bang. W hy d i d yo u d e c i d e to g et ordained? It seems to contradict your reputation as a rapper. That’s probably true. Last year, I was thinking to myself in the middle of a party, what do I want to do for my 40th birthday? Should I throw a crazy party? Or should I do something that’s quite unusual and unlike me? From a young age, I’ve been seen as the rebel, with dreadlocks and all, but personally I’ve always believed in Buddhism. I’m not strictly religious, but I don’t even view it as religion—it’s just a way of life. Living the middle path just works and makes sense to me. Initially I was going to get ordained on my birthday, but then I thought, why wait? So I got ordained at a forest temple in Loei in January. We’d wake up surrounded by nature, clean the Buddha image and meditate. Would you do it again? I genuinely felt like I could easily live a simple life like that. But the fact is there’s so much that I’ve created, the businesses, that would go to ruin without me running it. I still pray every day. From what I’ve learnt from the forest monks there, we really don’t need to become monks to feel refreshed and fulfilled. If you can follow the five precepts, that’s great. If not, just meditate and pray, and that’s already enough.

You make it sound so simple, when there are so many complex issues with Buddhism in Thailand. Personally, I don’t want to judge—you practice what you believe in—but I do think that the “extras” are all made up. There are lots of people who make a lot of gains from these special elements, but if you understand the core of the teachings, these other things are completely redundant. And why did you decide to raise money for your Tumboon Dai Boon campaign through this channel? This campaign aims to raise money to build proper housing and bathrooms for the monks at Wat Pa Phutta Wanaram temple, located in the forest of Phu Luang district of Loei. The monks there are exposed to extremely cold weather because of the lack of proper shelter despite the fact that the temple is central to the faith of local villagers. I could do it via donations, but funding is difficult as there’s such a small number of locals that live in the area. Then I thought to myself that we already have a crowdfunding platform, and no one has ever tried to use it for this purpose before. Reception has been great. Over 90 percent has been funded and we still have around 10 days to go.

Can crowdfunding in Thailand be successful? We should never underestimate the power of Thai consumers. We get accustomed to new applications very easily. Take Facebook, for instance, we’re the fifth-highest user in the world, which is why Facebook often tests out new functions with us. Asiola is a great platform to get the word out here. It was never meant to be a money-making business. I will die a happy man knowing that I’m helping out so many people. What about your projects in the music scene? I’ve been running Thaitanium Entertainment for over 16 years now, managing groups like Southside and Mindset. But I’m also having a great time working on a brand new project called Bang Bang Bang. People don’t know that I started off as a DJ, not as a rapper. In 1996 I was Thailand DMC Champion and represented our country at the world championships in Italy. I’ve always loved working behind the scenes. Interview by Lily Kittisrikangwan

Revisit Koh Samui to discover cool new restaurants and bars, and some of the hottest resorts in the country. By Monruedee Jansuttipan

CLYDE CAFE These experienced bakers supply pastries to hotels all over the island. Now you can also taste their treats at this cafe located at a new open-air shopping arcade. This sunset dining hot spot in the north of the island is run by the same people as Bangkok’s longstanding Pola Pola Restaurant & Bar. The chic, modern–tropical interior comes from leading Thai product designers Thinkk Studio, who contributed all the chairs, tables and lamps. Thai fusion and Italian dishes dominate the menu with picks like truffle pizza (B480), spicy Australian beef salad (B450) and the whopping mixed seafood box (B1,200). Get there early to claim a daybed on the wooden terrace to enjoy the sunset with a mojito in hand.

Conrad Koh Samui’s modern Thai restaurant has rolled out a tantalizing new set menu, dubbed "Journey of Jahn." The restaurant presents each dish in a way that depicts the journey of the ingredients. “Plaa Pla Bai Bua,” for example, sees seared tuna placed on a lotus leaf drizzled with mineral water to represent fishermen heading out to sea in the early morning. The eight-course set is available for B2,999 and B5,199 with wine pairing.

The Library hotel, a long-time favorite among design-savvy travelers, has expanded its beachfront restaurant, The Page (also see Tapas Bar). You’ll now find not just more seats perfectly poised for beach views, but also a list of 40 new dishes drawn from old Thai recipes. Go for Samrab Thai, an eight-course set dinner (B3,900 for two persons), to get a well-rounded hit of rare flavors like gaeng run juan nua nong lai (beef stewed in shrimp paste soup), beef massaman and ray rai na gaeng krati fuktong (coconut noodle, grilled pork and pumpkin curry).

The Library’s Drink Gallery, one of the island’s most stylish drinking spots, has introduced a new Thai tapas bar right next to it. Boasting surprisingly cheap prices from B99, the menu is packed with famous Thai dishes such as thod man (spicy fish cakes), moo klunk foon (spicy deep-fried pork salad), sue rong hai (grilled beef), satay ruam (mixed grilled meat satay) and moo manao (spicy pork with lime) to go with your killer cocktail from next door.

The successful cafe at Bophut fisherman’s village just launched a new branch on Chaweng Road. The smaller venue opens early in the morning for visitors to enjoy a healthy breakfast, including poached pear in red wine, granola and fresh berries (B250). The coffee station serves a heady brew made from medium-dark beans sourced from Nan in Northern Thailand. Chaweng Rd., Bo Phut, 094-804-1221. Open daily 8am-11:30pm. goo.gl/5Au3xi

The cafe that was once a branch of Bangkok’s beloved Casa Lapin is now Cafe de Pier, which puts a heavy focus on cocktails—try such creations as Fog Garden & Redsun (whiskey, white wine, lime, raspberry puree, cranberry juice, cinnamon syrup, B350) or Crocodile Mango Chili Pepper (aloe vera, passion fruit, spicy mango and gin, B340). The kitchen rolls out international staples—salad, pasta, sandwiches, you name it—and popular Thai dishes such as beef massaman and fried chicken with cashew nuts. 50 Moo1, Fisherman’s Village, Bophut, 077-430-680. CHIANG MAI

Next Station Hot on the heels of Maiiam Contemporary Art Museum comes another must-visit art opening up North. Asian Culture Station (053-222-324, asianculturestation.cac-art.info) is neither a gallery nor an art space, but more of an information center. Run by the same team as the Chiang Mai Art Conversation (CAC) art map, led by local artist Sutthirat Supaparinya, it’s a space dedicated to spreading information about Asian art and culture, particularly from ASEAN countries and Japan. It does this by hosting talks and workshops geared at sharing experiences, ideas and best practices.

NAKHON PHANOM

River of Fire

If Ubon Ratchathani is the top destination to ring in the Buddhist Lent festival, Nakhon Phanom is just the place to celebrate the end of the period. This Oct 9-17 it will host the spectacular Lai Ruae Fai (illuminated boat procession) festival, featuring brightly lit boats decorated with flowers, incense sticks, candles and lanterns sailing along the Mekong River. Taking place every evening during the period, the event is held in the belief that bad fortune will be washed away in the water. Get more info at the TAT Nakhon Phanom Office (042-511-287, 042-511-576).

PATTAYA

Make a Splash Hard Rock Pattaya (038-428-755-9, pattaya.hardrockhotels.net) is currently renovating its swimming pool, the site of its regular Saturday foam party. Why is this big news? Because they're offering a very cheap hotel package to make up for it. Rock the Amazone package includes a one-night stay plus entry for two (with transfers) to the giant Cartoon Network Amazone waterpark from B3,059. That’s a good deal considering rooms normally start at B2,549, while day-passes to the park are B1,290 for Thais and B1,590 for foreigners. The package runs until Oct 31, when the new-look pool will be unveiled complete with Jacuzzi and an upgraded light and sound system.

AIRLINES

Raising the Bar Thailand’s budget airline market just got a bit more crowded with Thai Vietjet (www.vietjetair.com) announcing several new routes out of Bangkok. The Thai unit of the Vietnamese low-cost carrier will open routes from Bangkok to Phuket and Chiang Mai starting this Sep 15 and Sep 26, respectively. In addition, they will launch a new international route between Bangkok and Haiphong, Vietnam, with four flights per week starting from Nov 9. This northern port city is home to quaint colonial buildings and a vibrant coffee culture, but is perhaps best known as the gateway to the magical Ha Long Bay. Meanwhile, AirAsia (www.airasia.com) just launched its Premium Red Lounge at the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA2), offering perks like buffet snacks, Wi-Fi, lounge seats, bathrooms and work spaces. Business class passengers can use the lounge for free, while general passengers must pay MYR79 (B650) to get in.

Track Changes Fitbit is rolling out two upgraded fitness trackers at once: the Fitbit Charge 2 and Fitbit Flex 2. The Charge 2 comes with minor, though welcome, updates like a larger screen which makes it easier to view stats and more convenient tap control. The all-new Relax function guides wearers through a series of controlled breathing exercises, while other perks include multi-sport tracking and compatibility with your phone’s GPS. The Flex 2 is an ultra-slim, snazzy looking thing that shouldn’t prove too hard to pair with your outfit. It also comes with a swim tracker (it’s water-resistant up to 50 meters). Sadly, prices don’t get any friendlier—the Fitbit Charge 2 starts from B7,490 and the Fitbit Flex 2 from B4,490. Available at all major IT stores, or at www.fitbit.com.

Bangkok’s latest tattoo studio, All Day Tattoo, shares its home with the newly-opened second branch of Hair of the Dog craft beer bar. Decked out in vivid red, the casual space keeps you preoccupied with upbeat music, an Xbox and internet TV while you wait your turn. The three artists specialize in a variety of tattooing styles—from traditional color, geometric and minimalist work and custom lettering to blacklight (or UV) tattoos. Prices start at B3,000/hour. The squeamish can opt for the “painless” option, which makes use of a “secret” spray—that’s if the beers from next door don’t provide the requisite Dutch courage. 593/27 Sukhumvit Soi 33/1, 098-381-4364. Open daily noon-8pm. www.alldaytattoo.com

Australian-born trampoline park Bounce has opened a second Bangkok branch on the top floor of EmQuartier. This one’s considerably smaller than the original Ratchada park, but no less fun. While there’s no indoor climbing wall, you can still find trampolining options like free-jumping (80 interconnected trampolines on which you can work on your own routine, suited for everyone), the wall (high-rebound trampolines that help you run up the wall), dodgeball (a trampoline “Colosseum” where you avoid balls flung at you) and performance trampolines (Olympic trampolines for highly skilled players). Prices start at B450/hour. 4/F, The Glass Quartier, EmQuartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-014-2446. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Phrom Phong

Bangkok interior design firm Paperspace is behind the sleek new co-working space on Sathorn Soi 9. Rather than just regular office desks, Paper-work offers a larger variety of seating than we’re accustomed to seeing, from high tables to coffee tables. Cool ceiling lamps, slouchy chairs and couches all get the nod, while decorative touches like a retro tricycle, are also strewn about the open, largely black-and-white space. Prices start at B450/day and B4,900/month, both with free-flow drinks like coffee and water. Office spaces are B30,000/month. Freelance designers also get access to a material library with their membership. 2/F, KS Building, Sathorn Soi 9, 063-6422700. Open Mon-Fri 9am-6pm. BTS Chong Nonsi. www.paperworkbkk.com

This month, you don’t have to travel to the Old Town to try the delicious Thai food at Err as it’s now featured on the menu at Siam Discovery’s Cafe Now. Chef couple Duangporn Songvisava and Dylan Jones of fine-dining institution Bo.lan opened Err last year to serve considerably more casual bites. Throughout September, Err's menu has taken over the light-filled cafe with house-made preserved items like naem (grilled Northern-style cured pork, B250), Chiang Rai-style sai ua (curry sausage, B250) and sai krok Isaan (Isaan-style sausage, B280); as well as crunchy, snacky dishes like toasted watermelon seeds with kaffir lime leaf (B120) and the whole chicken skin (B220). Be warned: prices are slightly higher than the riverside venue. Cafe Now, 3/F, Siam Discovery, Rama 1 Rd., 063-613-8563. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Siam.

Rocket Coffeebar The uber-chic cafe has forged its reputation for comforting eats, quality coffee and chill vibes. Each of Rocket's spaces look wonderfully modern, thanks to an abundance of light and plenty of warm wood tones that are easy on the eyes. The menu highlights light Scandinavian fare like smorrebrod (open-faced sandwiches), while the long list of favorites also includes waffles, salads and brunch-y egg dishes. Also popular are the delicious house-made baked items, like the superstar "cruffin" (croissant dough baked in a muffin tin). The specialty coffee blends and cold brew are not to be missed, while you can also taste Rocket’s decadent take on the affogato (vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso) at its newest venue, located front and center of Thonglor’s 72 Courtyard community mall. Known as one of the best names in town for a barbecue dinner, Lady Brett has just stepped up its game by adding lunch service to its original Sathorn branch and rolling out a weekend brunch at its Thonglor venue. Helmed by German chef Patrick Martens, the focus remains on great meats grilled over charcoal. The concentrated menu zeros in on quality grills, from chicken thigh up to pork, seafood and Australian black Angus beef. Also try Lady Brett’s hearty and comforting penne Bolognese made with minced beef, pork and lamb and shaved Parmesan cheese.

e all know that drinking heavily is bad for us, but we still do it. So if you can’t cut out drinking altogether, then at least try and make it that little bit healthier. On any night out, you can easily take in 1,500 calories—sometimes after just a few drinks. But by knowing what to order or how to adapt your favorite cocktail, you can significantly reduce that amount. We spoke to Stella Ungphongphan, a Bangkok-based Thai nutritionist and certified health coach, and asked her a few questions about how to minimize the calories in our drinking habits. “One cocktail should be about 200 calories, if it’s more than that, it’s considered quite a lot,” says Stella. “One shot of spirit is usually just below 100 calories.” Her first tip for a calorie-light night out is to go for the hard stuff: “Hard alcohol or spirits such as vodka, whiskey, rum, gin and tequila contain literally no carbs and are the healthier drinking options,” says Stella. As for cocktails, she advises drinks that use minimal syrup or fruit juice, both of which contain heaps of sugar. “Martinis, cosmopolitans and mojitos are the guiltless options for those looking to keep the calories down,” says Stella. Her advice on what to avoid is simple. “Long Island iced tea sounds rather innocent and healthy, but don’t be fooled. It has up to 700 calories per glass. That’s like ordering a meal. The combination of rum, vodka, tequila, syrup and soft drink makes this a calorie bomb.” Sangria, she says, is also to be avoided. “It looks healthy, with the fruit floating in the glass and knowing the antioxidant wonders of red wine and all. However the addition of fruit juice, syrup and table sugar can push the calories up to 500.” When in doubt, her advice is simple: choose red wine. “It’s low in calories [approximately 85 calories per 125ml glass] and contains

antioxidants such as procyanidins, known for protecting against heart diseases, and resveratrol, which helps prevent blood clots and damage to blood vessels.” If you must drink cocktails containing fruit juice and syrup, she says speak to the bartender about using half or quarter measures—so we did. Kieren James Jr. is beverage manager at the Park Hyatt hotel, set to open at the start of next year on top of Central Embassy. He has some tips on how to create a delicious, low-sugar cocktail. “I’d use something like orange blossom or rose water, which could give the impression of sweetness. I may even use honey or agave nectar as they are lower on the glycemic index and have fewer calories than refined white sugar. You could also turn to fruit and cut out the syrup altogether, and use citrus sparingly.” Danny Sorum of Sapparot Group (U.N.C.LE., Rocket and Lady Brett) sees it the same way. “Soft drinks, packaged juice, syrup or liqueurs are basically 50 percent sugar. I actually try my best to steer clear of sugar and sweet liquor when I create cocktails, purely because I don’t like taking in too much sugar myself. There’s a balance of knowing how to combine ingredients to minimize the use of sugar.” Milk Pailin of Il Fumo, recently crowned as Southeast Asia’s Best Bartender at the Diageo World Class bartender competition, has her own suggestion. “To lessen the taste of the alcohol, you could turn your cocktail fizzy by adding soda water, sparkling wine or prosecco.” The more you look at how many calories you take in with every drink, the more daunting it can get. But it’s good to know we can still enjoy ourselves without having to turn completely teetotal. And if all this scares you, just keep drinking until all those calories become as blurry as the night itself. Another glass (or bottle) of red wine, please.

WINE Jacob’s Creek’s whiskey barrel-aged red arrives in Bangkok Would you pay B1,700 for a bottle of Jacob’s Creek? That’s what the mass Australian winemaker is banking on you doing for its latest premium red, the Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon, which launches in Bangkok at the end of this month. Double barrel means that the wine gets to mature in two different types of barrel. First, it’s aged in a traditional wine barrel, after which it gets transferred to an Irish whiskey barrel which, according to brand ambassador Liepa Olsauskaite, “softens the strong tannins and adds additional

20

layers of smokiness and caramel.” It’s basically the opposite of how some whiskies are made, which are often allowed to age in old wine barrels to gain flavor. Our verdict: the process really does give this wine a more complex taste, while the original flavors of cabernet sauvignon (blackcurrant, blueberries, mint) still remain. This is one original and delicious drink. Available at Foodland, Villa Market and The Mall from late-Sep onwards, priced B1,700.

OPEN DOOR

Crying Thaiger Food truck pioneer Daniel Thaiger graduates to a familiar space. The buzz: The people behind Bangkok’s favorite burger truck, Daniel Thaiger, have opened a proper sit-down spin-off. Taking over the intimate wedge of space formerly belonging to Opposite Mess Hall on Sukhumvit Soi 51, the restaurant’s menu goes beyond burgers to include more protein-packed comfort food—the hint is in the name, which is a reference to the famous Thai dish of grilled steak and jim jaew. The decor: Fans of Opposite will be familiar with the bare-bones second-floor setup that’s little more than hard wooden communal seating and a long bar in front of the narrow kitchen. Co-founders Honey and Mark Falcioni have added more color with a large wall mural that tells Crying Thaiger’s backstory, while upstairs is a lowkey rooftop space where they plan to host barbecues and Taco Tuesday nights.

24

The food: Kitted out with a big flat-top griddle and a charcoal grill, the open kitchen serves up burgers, hotdogs and steaks. While Daniel Thaiger set the bar high for burgers, you won't find the familiar beefy, buttery flavors of the Mr Steve here. Instead you can expect some all-new exciting combos starring mostly pork and lamb. The Mediterranean Lamb burger (B420 with fries) is firming as our new favorite, comprising a heavily seasoned lamb patty (black pepper, cumin, coriander seed) with tzatziki, feta cheese, mint and roast tomatoes stuffed between a soft Conkey’s bun. As for hotdogs, lamb also features in the spicy merguez (12-inch sausage with caramelized onion and dijon mustard, B290). The real highlight looms as the tomahawk steak (B250/100g, pre-order only): a juicy slab of Australian grilled beef served with spicy jim jaew sauce. Aside from a pared-back Caesar salad (B190), side dishes go for full-on com-

forting flavors: cheesy garlic bread (B120), mac and cheese (B180), and the glorious truffle fries (B195). The drinks: Eventually there will be a full selection of craft beers and wine, but for now you can content yourself with house cocktails like the potent Thaiger’s Mezgroni (a twist on the negroni featuring mezcal) or the refreshing Thaiger’s Michelada (chilled sangrita with beer plus a shot of mezcal). Why you should care: Arguably Bangkok’s best burgers, along with some killer steaks and cocktails, all in a proven party-friendly space—what’s not to love? NEW AND NOTED

Keep Grilling The brainchild of Kenichi Nagata, the man behind Sukhumvit Soi 26’s Jidori-ya Ken (previously Jidori-ya Kenzou), Gen (Acmen Complex, 267/31 Sukhumvit Soi 63 [Ekkamai], 02-048-0008) stands out as the only Japanese-style house in Ekkamai’s Acmen complex. Gen goes well beyond its grilled chicken-specializing sister to serve up a wider variety of meat grilled on binchotan charcoal. While the free-range chicken still stands as one of the stars (try the slightly-roasted breast with yuzu kosho paste, B160), Nagata also does some fine Japanese wagyu, pork and seafood in addition to sashimi and other appetizers. Don’t miss the dashi rolled egg (B180) and matcha white chocolate fondue (B290).

Daily Fix Casual Old Town eatery Chomp has launched a nearby sister project not far from the original spot. At the homey Chomp

Deli (133 Samsen Rd., 064-228-6220), owner-chef Gili Back is still all about comforting food, with a focus on housemade and local community products. On top of deli items like roast beef, bread from Konnichipan and meat products from Uncle Cameron’s, Back also puts together ham and pea soup (B150), old-fashioned potato salad (B25/B50) and sandwiches like BLT+Feta (smoked bacon and herb-infused feta cheese on French baguette). There are also plenty of vegetarian and vegan offerings.

Hard Cheese Another contender in the trending cheese tart ring comes from nowhere else but Japan. The Sendai-hailing Me & Cheese (2/F, Siam Discovery, Rama 1 Rd., 02-260-1055. BTS Siam) serves boat-shaped tarts filled with a secret mix of three cheeses. Now available for B80 per piece at Siam Discovery’s Sweet Lab zone before they open a proper cafe.

Ogu Ogu G/F, Park Ventures Ecoplex, 57 Phloen Chit Rd., 02108-2255. Open Mon-Sat 11am-10pm. BTS Phloen Chit Ogu Ogu dishes out all the Japanese basics from tempura and sushi to katsu curry alongside slightly more Westernleaning salads. Get there during 5-7pm for the daily happy hour specials. The setting takes no little inspiration from New York, filled with hanging wires, lamps and wooden furnishings. Ogu actually dubs itself a sake bar rather than a restaurant, and those who'd like to raise a glass in a polished atmosphere will find much to love. Exclusively for Citi credit cardmembers. Veganerie made its name as a bakery dishing out desserts that look anything but dairy-free. At this larger, altogether more photogenic, restaurant they add plant-based savory dishes to the menu. Tucked behind Benjasiri Park, the space is a modern-rustic delight (concrete and wood meet dangling lamps and ferns) flooded with natural light. If it wasn’t for the heaving club soundtrack, we’d be happy to while away an afternoon here. The food and drink selection is huge and keeps growing judging by the extra pages sticking out of the thick menu: all-day breakfast, salads, sandwiches, curries, pastas, smoothies, juices, you name it. Dishes feature a variety meat substitutes. The zucchini noodles with tomato and basil sauce (B230) features imported soy sausage that convincingly replicates the texture of frankfurt (for better or worse), while the pulled “pork” burger

At Baa Ga Din, Thitid Tassanakajohn (Le Du, Baan), teams up with American chef Chandler Schultz with the aim of redefining Thai street food. The outcome is a menu that’s familiar but full of surprises. Simple yet sophisticated touches are everywhere, starting with the restaurant’s design by Party / Space / Design (Too Fast To Sleep, Thinking Outside the Fox, Shugaa), whose mix of wood, brick and terrazzo also references rusticity and nostalgia through fighting cocks and fish, and lottery numbers. On paper, the menu is jam-packed with familiar favorites like satay, yam (spicy salad), chicken wings and hoy tod (crispy oysters), but not all are as they appear. Take the deep-fried chicken wings (served with fermented green chili sauce and basil mayo, B160), which are partly deboned and pressurecooked before frying, so the meat just slides off the bone. A platter of rice crackers served with herbs and pickled

vegetables (B200) shows off the depth and complexity of Thai food through the sheer variety of herbs on offer and the crackers’ slightly spicy kick. Another ambitious pick is the tom yam kung “ceviche” (B290)—which is zesty and pungent like the Latin American dish it takes its name from, with a puree that adds a creamy, intense dimension. Only occasionally are flavors slightly mismatched, as in the prettily plated grilled pork shoulder with red curry (B550). The big chunks of tender meat come doused in a well-rounded curry, only to be muddled somewhat by the overly sweet pickled bamboo shoot. The short list of desserts goes heavy on nostalgia with treats like ice cream sandwiches and black sesame cake. The classic mango sticky rice (B220) comes in pudding form with a smoky coconut cream. It’s rich and comforting, though the rice may be a little mushy for purists. Baa Ga Din aspires to be more than a restaurant, though, with a full bar targeting the after-work drinks crowd. Chef Thitid, a certified sommelier, selects some 80 wines starting at B240/ glass as well as a short list of sake starting at B380/glass. As for cocktails— we recommend knocking back a fruity Silom Cha Cha Cha (B350), which mixes Scotch whiskey with red dragonfruit and lychee liqueur. Cool and casual Baa Ga Din is not quite the molecular spectacle of Le Du, but there’s no lack of sophistication on show.

(with fries, B290) is made with deliciously smoky mushrooms. Both boast enjoyable flavors, but our complaints are about the finer details. On our last visit, both were served lukewarm; the former featuring overly watery “zoodles,” the latter coming with bland, store-bought sauces. The perfectly crisp fried spring rolls (B190), though, put many of their meaty counterparts to shame, stuffed with tasty glass noodles, tofu and greens, and coming with a house-made sweet and sour sauce that’s thick and swimming with veggies. Aromatic and nicely textured, the sweet potato and chickpea coconut curry rice bowl (B200) suffers only from the accompanying dry rice. Non-vegans might argue these dishes play things a bit safe, but at least they’re reliable. Outsiders can expect more fireworks with the shop’s muchloved desserts like vegan waffles (from B165), ice cream (from B55) and frappes—try the spectacular Nutella option (B165), a straw-clogging blend of peanut butter, cashews, banana, organic soy milk and vegan chocolate ice cream. Veganerie Concept is part of a new brigade of restaurants taking “healthy” eating in a mainstream direction. Like at Broccoli Revolution, you have to pay a bit more for the pleasure; unlike at Broccoli Revolution, there’s sadly no booze. Ultimately this is a solid balance between substance and style that should appease vegans, if not all their meat-loving buddies.

Metamorphosis of Japan after the War

Nowadays Japan is an advanced country at the leading-edge of education, technology and transportation. But 50 years ago things were very different. After World War II, much of the country lay in ruins. A new exhibition opening in Bangkok this month provides a visual account of the rapid changes Japan experienced throughout the post-war period on the road to prosperity. Organized by the Japan Foundation and curated by Tsuguo Tada and Marc Feustel, Metamorphosis of Japan after the War runs from Sep 17-Oct 14 at Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center (RCAC). The collection presents 123 images by 11 Japanest artists which cap-

ture the rampant social changes in post-war Japan from 1945-1964. Split into three sections—The Aftermath of War, Between Tradition and Modernity, and Towards a New Japan—the exhibition charts the significant social and political changes that occurred throughout Japan after WWII through to its hosting of the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.

This Sep 24, the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos makes its first ever Bangkok appearance, inviting people to gather and march on the grounds of Lumpini Park. On this day, similar marches will take place in various cities across the world in a fight to protect elephants and rhinos everywhere and raise awareness about the situation. Every year, more than 35,000 elephants are killed for their tusks while a rhino is slaughtered once every eight hours for its horn. The event is organized by the non-profit ISF Foundation, which is owned by Hollywood actor Ian Somerhalder and works on projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures.

now INTERVIEW Chayapong Naviroj, founder of Bangkok Swing

Bangkok Swing is a community dedicated to sharing the joy of swing dancing. This Sep 24, one of their main events, Diga Diga Doo, returns to Chinatown for a night of live music, social dancing and elegant performances. Here, BK talks to the founder about what’s in store for the future. How did Bangkok Swing come about? I started swing dancing during my freshman year in Philadelphia. I saw a guy throwing a girl up in the air and I just really wanted to do it too. I have always been into sports and music, and Lindy Hop is a perfect blend of the two. When I came back to Bangkok, there wasn’t a swing dancing community yet, so I decided to start one. How would you describe the Bangkok Swing community? It’s a combination of expats and Thais. For the Thais that come, some think of it as just a hobby, while others want to take it more seriously. But this takes time. Some people think “Oh, it’s my passion!” really quickly, but easy come easy go. Some who have been dancing for a year or two start traveling abroad and then they realize the world of swing is so big. After that they might contribute more to the community by becoming a DJ or a teacher.

What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve come across since starting Bangkok Swing? The talent of people was a big surprise. Also, how quickly people absorb what swing dancing is. It can be hard introducing a new artform in Thailand, but I think our community is very clear on what we do: the type of music, people, fashion. It’s caught on so fast. Last year we only had enough people to fill the rooftop of Cho Why. This year we couldn’t fit everyone into three floors. What’s next? Dancing used to be massive in Thailand. People went ballroom dancing at Amphorn and Lumpini parks all the time. My next goal is to recreate this vintage culture of social dancing. It’s not like solo dancing you can do in the club. This is social dancing, which you do in pairs. There’s tension between preserving what’s already great and growing it into something bigger. In other countries they have several communities for swing dancing, but we are special because we are all together. Interview by Earn Saenmuk

My brain is suddenly shut down and forget everything I would like to say. I feel pressured for not being able to do my best and my tear is falling down. My experience from giving speech in front of the classroom has been haunting me until I grow up. Every time I am in front of other people, I feel very pressured. After graduated, I was think to do something so I decided to join the volunteer work to teach in Romania where the trainer was very strict. Inspecting me from body language to what I teach and also insulting me that “if you can’t handle it, just go home (Thailand)” As my intention is to help them teaching and improve myself, I have to overcome those fears and transform the fears to the power and courage to defeat all the pressures. Although I am still nervous, I am better at speaking in front of the public now. “I have already conquered past pressures and change bad experiences to be a teacher nowadays. I believe that everyone have been through good and bad moments. If we don’t run away from it, those weaknesses will be disappeared. Thank you bad days for making me a better person.”
