A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week. Froyo is the new churro. Ole! Straight out of Spain, Llaollao is the latest much-hyped frozen yogurt specialist to land in Bangkok. Known for its photogenic froyo made with low-fat skimmed milk, plus its crazy array of healthy toppings, the brand caused waits of up to 30 minutes upon opening in Singapore a couple years back Which makes the decision to open here on the sly at Platinum Mall all the more bewildering. Some of the biggest names in Asian art are on show in Bangkok What do Ai Wei Wei and Apichatpong Weerasethakul have in common? Apart from being supremely talented and notoriously outspoken, both artists headline the launch exhibition of Tang Contemporary Art’s new gallery on Ratchadamri Road. Running through Oct 30, it explores Asia’s shift away from regionalism by gathering 14 of its leading artists. After falling two years behind schedule, Park Hyatt is still behind schedule But at least now we have a tentative end in sight for the hotel at Central Embassy which is apparently going to be a “new icon of luxury” for the city. Whatever that means. Prepare yourself for plenty more venues for fine dining and cocktails as of Q1 2017. (Just don’t tell the ultra-nationalists it was designed by a Brit!) Phuket will lead us into a brave new digital future Do you hear that static buzz mixed with the shrill whistle of a landline phone? That’s the sound of Phuket gearing up to become Thailand’s answer to Silicon Valley. With sunny beaches and a glistening new airport terminal, it has everything your average digital nomad needs, apparently, and so Dear Leader is banking his hopes on turning the island into a start-up paradise as part of his vision for Thailand 4.0. Ditch those Bangkok co-working shares now. Panaeng curry should be made with grilled chicken Nope, it’s not from Penang. And no, you don’t have to have it as cardboard chicken boiled in coconut milk (although that’s a genuine recipe as well). Bo.lan is doing an amazing version of this dish according to an 1890 recipe, the oldest one there is, where the chicken is coated with coconut milk and curry paste while roasting. The result? You’ll never want to have it any other way.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Thai directors

Not: Hollywood

Bangkok directors have a ton of films coming up at indie film festivals. As we write, Bangkok Post film critic Kong Rithdee is touting his screenwriting debut with director Pimpaka Towira in Toronto, while renowned literary bigwig Prabda Yoon’s first foray into film, Motel Mist, is also set for release at the end of the year. Until then, take yourself down to Bangkok Screening Room, which just opened, and save yourself from the rest of the dross that’s in the cinema.

Hot: Courtesy

Not: Action

The National Anti-Corruption Commission has written a letter to Bangkok’s chief of police asking nicely if officers involved in the Red Bull heir case could go see them and answer some questions. They have until Oct 3 to take up the NACC’s offer at a time of their leisure. Meanwhile over at the BMA, architects involved in the riverside Norman Foster rip-off scandal will receive no action and their work’s only being scrapped to shut us lot up. How nice.

Hot: Hong Kong

Not: Brooklyn

The new SNP (see page 17) is a retro hipster restaurant by S&P. It could well herald a new wave of diner chic, replacing the ubiquitous white tiles of Brooklyn with the terrazo favored by Chinese diners from Hong Kong to Siam (remember New Light?). We wonder for how long SNP Headquarter will resist the urge to have “table tents,” those obnoxious promos that S&P has turned into veritable libraries of various cards, menus and flyers that sit on every table. Right now it’s just a wonderfully minimal number.

MINISTRY 2000 Hot: Classicism

Not: Hype

If you were going to launch some new ministry of high-tech stuff, you’d probably go down the obvious path of designing its logo with some ‘80s sci-fi font (think Tron). Not our government! In keeping with other governmental agencies’ unique visual identity, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society’s new emblem is a Buddha-shaped Wi-Fi router, the holy man’s finger acting as an antenna. Internet outrage followed its unveiling, but we love it.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

INTERVIEW While iconic Thai magazines are disappearing from newsstands, best-selling author Sarawut “Aey” Hengsawat, 38, aka Niew Glom (Roundfinger), known for his sharp social commentary, has teamed up with veteran writer, translator and editor Tomorn “Noom” Sookprecha, 47, to release their own publication. Set to launch on Oct 2, Mad About (www.fb.com/madaboutmag) will only last three issues. Here, BK talks to the duo about breathing new life into print media. What spurred you to do a magazine? Tomorn: We want to challenge people who say that print magazines are dead. So many things have impacted the magazine industry since the golden era of the ‘90s. It’s all controlled by advertisements. Nowadays you can also get so much of the same content online. While newspapers have seen the signs coming for decades, magazines have been slow to adapt. It’s not like people have become bored of paper, so what content do they really want? Sarawut: I feel there hasn’t been much that is exciting going on in magazines for a long time. I don’t mean magazine people aren’t doing good things, just that there hasn’t been much that is new. So, we want to redefine what it means to be a magazine. What will the magazine be like? Sarawut: We think of it like a car prototype: what components must come together to make it a magazine we want to read? There will

be only three magazines, and each will be totally different in its own way. There won’t be the same columns and the design will be different. Tomorn: We’re not egomaniac or anything. We’re just madly into the idea. Like making a car, we will provide the structure and then let others install the wheels, steering system or color scheme. What’s the reason for only three issues? Tomorn: We feel we can achieve all we want with this amount. The magazine dying after three issues will mock the reality that magazines are dying anyway. The very concept of making an engaging magazine in the digital era is already enough for us. Do you really believe that magazines are dead? Tomorn: Yes, but not all of them. People always say the young generations, millennials, don’t read magazines, but I feel that this should actually drive the media industry

to create new kinds of magazines. The more young people reject the old styles, the more new styles will come into existence. What does “reading” mean to you in the digital age? Tomorn: Lots of people might think online readers are fickle and quick to burst out with emotional comments. But I think there’s also another side to online features. The Atlantic and The Guardian , for instance, post a lot of analytical, long-form pieces that people actually read much more than the old article format. Reading can also take the form of games, too. Games like Sorcery! encourage kids to read while playing. Reading can be more than words on a page. Sarawut: I also like that online content is giving readers more moving pictures, including, now, the Facebook Live function, which allows more people to pay attention and listen to each other more. That can only be a good thing. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan and Gunchita Pangsalae

“Jirawut has admirable perseverance and a relentless intention to use his art to deliver messages about freedom in Thailand’s current political climate under military rule. He articulates the idea through his artwork in a way that is indirectly about the military, but rather with a focus on the importance of human rights and freedom. I believe good artists and art have the ability to deliver direct messages in indirect ways, such as this.” —Somrak Sila

“Kawita is a video artist who was part of ‘Thailand Eye’ [contemporary art by Thai artists exhibited at Saatchi Gallery in London]. Her video works in that exhibition portrayed images of a woman [herself] doing mundane acts of housekeeping in a funny and sarcastic way, like tying herself upside down with her head swinging back and forth like a broom stick, expressing a message about the domestic roles women are forced into.” —Petch Osathanugrah

He’s been making films since he was in primary school and received lots of exposure to experimental films when he was young. This made him stand out from his generation of fimmakers and artists in Thailand. His works often make references to old Thai cinema, soap operas or famous Thai literature, using amateur actors and actresses to retell the stories.” —Gridthiya Gaweewong

●● “A brilliant young photographer who's confident diversity is worth noting, including abstract photography. Her series 'Any Other (Thai Youth Undercurrent)' takes familiar postcard images of Thailand but renders them differently, more focused and contemplative than fleeting. This is usually the best any artist can do.”—Brian Curtin

“Ram caught my attention with his exhibition ‘Burning Love,’ which captures seemingly ordinary images from the daily lives of a young couple’s relationship. He combines this minimal composition with a very technical color running method that allows the hues to drool into each other, an impressive skill that very much enhances the emotions being captured.” —Manit Sriwanichpoom

“One of the most groundbreaking and interesting young Thai artists of this generation. People call him the ‘post-internet artist,’ or ‘denim painter,’ but I would call him the ‘boundary rider’ because his works touch upon the space in between many disciplines, media and worlds. He has a unique approach and understanding of what art is in the Thai and Western contexts, as well as the multilayers of reality that we face in today’s society.” —Gridthiya Gaweewong

“Harit has dreamed to be a professional photographer since the young age of 16. In his 2011 exhibition titled ‘Black Rites,’ which portrayed the daily lives of homeless children in Cambodia, he captured the beautifully tragic emotions of the scene in a way that was so filled with empathy and love. Similarly, in his 2012 series ‘Red Dream’ he managed to capture the fear and suspense of simply walking home alone at night during the 2010 military crackdown in Thailand. The emotions depicted in the photographs were so tangible, and not unlike reading a detailed written description of the experience.” —Manit Sriwanichpoom

www.wantaneesiri.com

●● “Historical and cultural context is always very important when creating art. In Wantanee’s work, art is a platform in which she creates social commentary on what’s happening in Thailand’s political scene. The ability, and daringness, to do this with a modern twist is something worth keeping an eye on.”—Eric Booth

“Dhanainun is a photographer who paradoxically captures the essence of Bangkok and Thailand by highlighting the country's lack of distinguishing characteristics. His images imbue very banal scenes of architecture and landscape with a strange sense of enigma.” —Brian Curtin

“Tulapop is a brilliant young Thai conceptual artist who works using a wide variety of media. In some of his works, he uses humor to ambiguously challenge the importance of certain Thai cultural symbols and practices. This humor importantly distinguishes him from his Thai peers, who take themselves too seriously and make heavy-handed work that supports the polarized politics here.” —Brian Curtin

“Sutthirat is a photo and video artist who’s currently having a solo show at Gallery Ver. Although I was not familiar with her work before, this exhibition is very strong. The title of the show is ‘10 Places in Tokyo’—a 10-channel video referencing the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and the more recent tsunami/Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster” —Petch Osathanugrah

“Tada has been exhibiting his work for some time now as a photographer, but it seems he is at an important turning point in his career. He is very multidisciplinary and his work is bound to get very surprising in the coming years. He is getting the attention of very established art events like the Kassel Documenta. I would definitely keep a close eye on what he is doing.” —Myrtille Tibayrenc

KHON KAEN

Mamafaka Memorial Three years after his tragic death, pioneering Thai graffiti artist Mamafaka (real name Pharuephon Mukdasanit) has got a gallery in his memory. Run by his family, Mamafaka Gallery (165/12 Pim Maan Chon 2, Roab Bueng Rd., Khon Kaen, 092-559-6514. www. fb.com/MMFKstudio) features a street-inspired space designed by Studio Mahutsachan— think old-school gray floor tiles and a perforated concrete façade that lets in plenty of light. The center of attention, of course, is Mamafaka’s varied works, from skate decks, figurines and screen prints to a Vespa. There’s also a room that depicts the artist’s old workspace. The plan is to show only Mamafaka’s work for six months before allowing other emerging artists to exhibit in the space. The gallery opens Tue-Sun from 11am6pm.

New-in-town American haircare product Olaplex claims to take a lot of the risk out of coloring your hair. By acting as a “bond multiplier,” the treatment is said to limit the damage and reduce breakage to hair during or after coloring. A stylist will add Olaplex No.1 (Bond Multiplier) directly to your chosen hair color or bleach, and then use No.2 (Bond Perfector) after rinsing the chemicals off. These products are salon use only (as they require proper training), but you also get No.3 to take home and use once a week afterwards. The results? Well, some people in the industry say it’ll restore your hair to its previous luster and volume. We tried it with a color treatment and our hair didn’t feel brittle and dry as with past experiences. Available at salons like CHI salon (Mercury Ville) and Akru (Q House Lumpini)—call 02-105-4335 to find the one nearest you.

RESTAURANT

Hipster Grandma The latest opening from grandma favorite S&P sees the chain head in an all-new hipster direction. SNP Headquarter is an industrial-chic space that houses not only a restaurant but also an espresso bar, bakery, cake studio and workshop. Dishes also make use of superfoods du jour as in the quinoa salad with grilled salmon (B280), while playful presentation sees the classic lod chong dessert reinvented as a snow-like icy treat (B120). Drinks are fun and fresh like the tub tab frozen (milk smoothie topped with Thai-style peanut candy, B150) and nitro cold brew coffee (B150). G/F, Italthai Tower, 2034 Petchaburi Rd., 02-723-4442

Food for Thought

Arriving in Bangkok back in February, sleek fine-dining chain Punjab Grill has been this year's biggest Indian restaurant opening. Now there's a reason to visit the restaurant's ornate setting of theatrical Indian curtains and chandeliers during the daytime, with a new brunch taking place every Sunday from noon-3pm, in addition to its daily dinner service. The brunch (B1,300 per person) promises plenty to please both vegetarian and non-vegetarians with live cooking stations and stalls offering chaat (Indian snacks), grilled meats, biryani (spiced rice), egg rolls, lassi (yogurt drink), masala chai (spiced tea) and kulfi (Indian ice cream). Radisson Suites, 23/2-3 Sukhumvit Soi 13, 02-645-4952

French chef Luc Debove has worked as the pastry chef and master glacier (ice-cream maker) at the one-Michelin-star Grand-Hotel Du Cap Ferrat, in France. Back in 2010 he was part of the French team that won the Gelato World Cup. Then in 2011 he was honored as Meilleur Ouvrier de France in the ice cream category, France's highest title in his field. So it's fair to say he knows a bit about dessert. Now Debove is heading to Bangkok to share his tips for innovative desserts. Taking place at Issaya Cooking Studio on Oct 19-22 (10:30am-6pm.), the 2-in-1 ice cream and cake class costs B29,000—which includes four days’ worth of lunches, pastries from Issaya La Patisserie to take home and a signed certificate from chef Debove himself. Limited seats available. Central Embassy, 1031 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-160-5636. BTS Phloen Chit.

October is looming as a huge month for food festivals. In addition to Courageous Bangkok on Oct 9, the following Sunday sees a celebration of World Food Day on the fringes of Chinatown. This Oct 16, from 3-8pm, Big Food takes over Soi Nana promising good food and drinks for a good cause. Aiming to promote sustainable food systems, the event is backed by the likes of sustainable seafood purveyor Fisherfolk. On top of food from names like Seven Spoons, Sloane’s, Err and Mad Moa, you can expect local vendors like Nang Loeng's sweets shop and Yaowarat noodles shop, as well as cold beers from Beervana and Udomsuk Brewing. bit.ly/2cp7CKu

ON THE BAR

Here’s Miky The former barman of J. Boroski and House on Sathorn goes it alone at new cocktail bar Mikys. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj The buzz: Italian mixologist Michele Montauti, previously of J. Boroski and House on Sathorn, is the latest bartender to go it alone with his own bar. Tucked down Silom’s trending Pan Road, Mikys deals in perfectly poured high-end cocktails in a moody lounge setting. The food: Montauti has partnered with next door’s Opus for the food, but that doesn’t mean you’ll only find classic Italian canapes. Instead, expect small bites that complement the drinks like orange juice-marinated salmon cubes (B290), tuna sashimi (B390) and French fries with truffle mayo (B190). For something bigger, opt for beef fajitas (B490) or chicken quesadilla (B390). The bar also stores a selection of cheese and cold cuts, including Iberico ham (B790/80g). The drinks: Cocktails, crafty ones, featuring spirits worth crowing about in the menu. Most of the drinks are pitched at B340, for which you get the likes of “Julie”—a heady mix of Broker’s gin, Mancino Bianco vermouth, Earl Grey tea, jasmine syrup, lime and egg white. Tequila fanciers can go for the “Pan Road” (Don Julio Reposado, elderflower liqueur, pomegranate juice, rosemary

syrup, lime and celery bitters), while the “Meticulous” puts a refreshing spin on bourbon whiskey with fresh watermelon juice, cinnamon syrup, lime and chocolate bitters. The decor: The large open space is flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to a leafy small front garden. One black wall bears the colorful painting of a fantastical tiger-deer creature created by street artist Mauy, while a lengthy backlit bar is where you’ll find Montauti whipping up his signature cocktails. The music: Bangkok-based Australian DJ George Patsan plays soul, funk and disco house, while the plan is to let other guest DJs take over two nights per week. The crowd: Young professionals and a smattering of their older colleagues. Why you should care: As the Sathorn Soi 10-12 buzz gradually spills over to Pan Road, the street is poised to be one of the coolest areas of the city. Mikys is a welcome, largely-pretentionfree addition to the neighborhood. Mikys Cocktail Bar, 64 Pan Rd., 02-6378368

Super Spreads Step up your weekend with the new brunch menus at these favorite restaurants. By BK Staff 80/20

Lady Brett

80/20 The essentials: A la carte, every Sat and Sun 10am-2pm Charoenkrung’s rising-star restaurant sticks to its concept of using as many local ingredients as possible in dishes that go beyong your average eggy fare. The 80/20 Benedict (B220) sees beetroot-cured snapper and wilted local spinach on slices of house baguette, which is then finished with a flavorful, aromatic dill hollandaise. A unique coconut dressing stars in the classic local greens salad dish (B140), while you can expect some nice, thick house-brined Canadian bacon, runny fried egg, garlic aioli and rich brioche in the Peameal bacon sandwich (B190). If you decide to go sweet, try the all-house-made soy yogurt parfait (B50) with roselle jam and coconut granola, or buckwheat pancake with Canadian maple syrup. Also try the mung bean drink (B70). 1052-1054 Charoenkrung Rd., 087-593-1936

Fillets The essentials: All-you-can-eat sushi, every first Sunday of the month (next is Oct 2, 11:30am-3pm) Langsuan’s premium Japanese restaurant has marked its second anniversary by rolling out two all-you-can-eat deals. On weekdays a 90-minute all-you-can-eat sushi deal (B2,559 per person) runs from 11:30am-2:30pm. But we recommend you live out your sushi dreams with the Sunday brunch deal (B4,500 per person). The 90-minute brunch features a bigger selection of nigiri sushi, including otoro (fatty tuna), salmon belly, scallop, wagyu and uni, as well as dishes like baked half lobster, grilled yellowtail collar, fresh oysters and wagyu donburi (fillet steak rice

bowl). Prices include soft drinks but an extra B799 will get you free-flow booze. Seats are limited. Reservations required. 3/F, Portico, 31 Langsuan Rd., 02-041-6056. BTS Chit Lom

Lady Brett The essentials: A la carte, every Saturday and Sunday 11am-3pm The barbecue specialist’s Thonglor venue now offers up a weekend menu that combines familiar appetizers and salads with some superb new eggy and sweet dishes. Expect hearty items like Uber Eggs (B495), three scrambled eggs with Parmesan, truffle and black garlic sauce, sauteed mushrooms and baby asparagus, topped with pulled braised beef cheek and served with sourdough; and the bacon and pate pancakes (B435), three pancakes with chicken liver pate, grainy mustard, crispy bacon, fried egg, rocket salad and house-made duck rillettes. Top it all off with vanilla pancakes (B275), vanilla-whipped mascarpone, caramelized bananas, maple syrup and crushed pistachios. 2/F, 72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor) , 02-392-7626

Le Meridien The essentials: “Healthy Sunday Brunch” buffet, every last Sunday of the month (next is Sep 25, 10am-2:30pm) Forget bacon, full-fat fry-ups or even an egg station; this brunch at Le Meridien’s Latest Recipe restaurant is big on sashimi and other fresh seafood, awesome detox juices and lean meats. (Don’t worry, there’s still pan-fried foie gras—if you don’t mind the judgmental stares.) Desserts highlight wholewheat waffles, vegan avocado chocolate tarts and fruit-

Party House One The essentials: All-you-can-eat lobster and more, every Sun noon-12:30pm. Munch on as many claws as you want at this new brunch featuring an array of seafood, salads, sushi and a selection of lobster dishes. The resident chef uses Canadian-born Boston lobsters and cooks them up at live stations as lobster thermidor or even pizza and tom yum noodles. You’ll even get to taste lobster ice cream and lobster creme brulee, too. B1,800 (food only) per person. Free-flow wine and beer cost an extra B499. Siam@Siam, 865 Rama 1 Rd., 02-217-3000. Touche Hombre The essentials: A la carte, every Saturday and Sunday 11am-3pm This Melbourne-born Mexican bar-slashrestaurant is the latest spot at 72 Courtyard to now open in the light of day. The weekend brunch menu features full-flavored eggy dishes like frittata Mexicana (baked eggs with peppers, onions, oregano, chipotle mayo and cactus salad, B250) and huevos rancheros (grilled wagyu rump steak

Uno Mas The essentials: “Sunday Bubbly Brunch” buffet, every first Sunday of the month (next is Oct 2 11:30am-2:30pm) This B3,555 spread doesn’t just feature the usual bounty of lobster, oysters and foie gras, but also some touches we’ve never seen at a hotel brunch before: tomahawk steak and Cochinillo suckling pig, both charcoal-grilled on a Josper oven. OK, you don’t get the whole plate of either, but servers come around with both regularly, along with plenty of other little Spanish-leaning nibbles like jamon croquettes. You also get free-flow proper Champagne—G.H. Mumm, no less. On top of that, there’s free-flow Spanish Rioja, sangria, cava, Bloody Mary, daiquiri and margarita. Other highlights include 36-monthcured Joselito ham—self-described as the best Iberian ham in the world and usually B790 a plate—as well as a selection of ceviche, squidink paella, charcoal-grilled tenderloin steak and proper pasteurized cheeses. This 54th-floor restaurant at Centara Grand hotel also runs a weekly Saturday tapas brunch at B999. 54/F, Centara Grand at CentralWorld, 999 Rama 1 Rd., 02-100-6255. BTS Chid Lom.

OPEN DOOR

Freebird A spectacular house introduces Bangkok to modern Australian flavors. The buzz: This restaurant is powered by a group of partners with long histories in the Singapore dining scene: Alan Barr of design agency Greymatters, Benjamin Lee of coffee brand Sarnies and Australian chef Dallas Cuddy. At Freebird, they bring together freshly brewed coffee, modern Australian cuisine and well-paired drinks in a mid-century modern house with garden. The decor: This wood-dominated, Dwell magazine-worthy house down the peaceful end of Sukhumvit Soi 47 comes from Greymatters. Up front a grab-and-go coffee booth offers Sarnies’ coffee (from B100) while windows offer a glimpse right into the kitchen. Inside is warm and welcoming without adhering too close to any trend. Pull up a stool at the bar in front of the kitchen or get even closer to the action at the chef’s table. Outdoor seating offers views of the garden, where the chef grows herbs and vegetables.

18

The food: The Australian-inspired food is a produce-driven mix of Western and Asian cooking methods and ingredients. Chef Cuddy peppers the shared dishes with umami-packed ingredients like seaweed and mushrooms. First-time visitors are encouraged to try “A Taste of Freebird,” a tasting menu of about 10 dishes at B1,750 (or B1,500 without dessert). Expect delicate combinations like organic sea urchin and sea grapes with whipped parmesan on house-made dehydrated flaxseed cracker (B230) or warm sweet potato and chilled shaved fennel topped with smoked walnut and honey (B270). The slow-roasted ocean trout with wakame butter, caviar and pennyworth (B1,600 for a 900g fillet) is elevated by the accompanying mussel escabeche. Dessert is just as complex—the sweet-and-sour lime leaf posset with whipped coconut cream, honeydew melon, basil seed and elderflower (B300) is a real work of art.

The drinks: General manager Marcus Boyle is also a sommelier who will help with drink pairing suggestions. Try his “Sommakase” flight (from B850/three drinks) to see how he picks wine, sake and even cider to match your dishes. The big wine menu starts from B350/glass highlighting Australian bottles and other wines of similar profiles. Cocktails were created by Liam Baer (previously of Evil Man Blues)—try Mexican Sunset (tequila, mezcal, dill and salted grapefruit, B350). Why you should care: Freebird is doing beautiful food in a beautiful space. The high attention to detail in the kitchen is reflected in everything from the service to the sophisticated online booking system (have your credit card details handy). The original Touche Hombre in Australia transports the Latino street culture of LA to a Melbourne shophouse brimming with ‘80s pop-culture references. Compared to its streetwise sister, this follow-up feels almost like fine dining. While the two-story, semialfresco Mexican restaurant swaps the usual gaudily painted walls, sombreros and pinatas for black-and-white collages, maroon banquettes and a pinball machine, the food lays to bed any fears about legitimacy. Chilis and other fancy ingredients are flown in from Mexico, but it’s the house-made tortillas that almost steal the show, whether wheat or corn, soft or hard shell. The tacos (from B225/2 pieces) don’t only stand out for the perfectly soft corn tortillas but also fillings that go beyond carnitas and refried beans

Brekkie HHHH Cafe. 6/9 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 083- 6566141. Open daily 9am-6pm. BB-BBB F

Brekkie ticks all the boxes for a hipster hit. The white-dominated house features plenty of natural light, photogenic nooks and stylish breakfast dishes with a sprinkling of superfoods. No surprise, then, that upon opening in January it was packed with avid cafe-hoppers clutching the latest iPhones and mirrorless cameras. Our last visit on a Saturday afternoon, however, showed a slight shift in demographic. Still packed, with only a few tables available on the second and third floors, the place was filled mostly with older foreigners and stylish Sukhumvit types visiting for a low-key and drawn-out weekend brunch. While the menu doesn’t read like the work of your usual healthfood-proselytizing restaurant, and Brekkie isn’t marketed as a “clean food” joint as such, it still makes a good place to start for people who want to eat healthier. Among the expected sandwiches, pasta and the

likes, you’ll find lighter versions of hearty dishes like home-cut sweet potato fries (B150) and the Skinny Royale (B260), a take on eggs royale with smoked salmon, a poached egg, rye toast and a less-fatty version of hollandaise sauce. Still, some dishes don’t look too healthy at all, like the capellini with mushroom sauce (B300), which still manages to be not too rich yet not too watery, and comes with a comforting taste if not an aroma to match the promised truffle paste. For something hearty, we’d rather go for the flavorful baked eggs with chorizo (B290), served hot on a skillet with two eggs and a whole bunch of chickpeas mixed with chorizo and corn. Back on the healthy tip, they also substitute quinoa for fried rice in Thai staples like fried quinoa with holy basil and pork shoulder steak (B280) and tom yum (B285), which features diced salmon, coconut heart and a heady aroma of galangal, kaffir lime leaf and lemongrass. Nice, but shame about the oil. Most surprising is the wholewheat pancake (B200)—an almost grease-free stack of pancakes topped with ricotta cheese, fruits and coconut butterscotch. It’s delicious. Another clean-eating pick is the green spirulina-spinach bowl (B250), thanks to a combination of passion fruit, banana and an abundance of grains. A meal at Brekkie doesn’t come cheap. However, we’d keep it near the top of our list for a comforting, but not-tooheavy lunch.

to the likes of octopus and chorizo (B325), and roast duck and seared foie gras (B350). The latter is a delicious coming together of textures and flavors, elevated by a touch of orange and rich mole (a thick , chocolate-tinged sauce). Seafood dishes tend to let the fresh produce speak for itself, as in the the tuna tostada (B310/3 pieces), a powerful hit of semi-raw fish, avocado, mango and a vicious habanero salsa atop a crisp, fried corn tortilla. Heck, even glorified grilled corn on the cob (elotes callejeros, B150) comes coated in the mind-blowing salty-sharpness of cotija (a dry Mexican cheese not unlike feta). Desserts play around with the familiar, such as the tres leches (“three milk cake,” B195), whose cinnamon-dusted horchata ice cream disguises the slight dryness of the cake. Claiming to stock Thailand’s largest collection of agave spirits, the bar’s tequila and mezcal cocktails often mirror the complexity of the food. A twist on the Manhattan, La Condesa (B295) is a spirit-forward mix of mezcal with oak barrel-aged tequila, Mancino vermouth, Cynar artichoke liqueur and grenadine that goes down far too easily. Thanks to its slick, cocktail-bar atmosphere, refined food and the best views in 72 Courtyard, Touche Hombre is hipster appropriation done right.

Here, BK talks to Tanaphon about the inspiration behind the project and how he wishes to use art as a tool to tackle social stugma. What inspired you to start the Teenage Pregnancy project? This is ongoing project started as part of my university course on documentary photography. I chose this subject because it hits close to home—I am still a young adult and during my school years, I had several friends who suddenly got pregnant. I saw them leave school and take a 360-degree turn in their normal life. What was the process of selecting the families and photographing them? In total, I photographed three families. The first one was a slightly more welloff family and someone I knew personally through school. After that, I wanted to explore the situation from a different angle and searched for families in less fortunate circumstances. From asking around, I managed to find people and contact them about the project. I spent time photographing their daily lives with an intention to capture how it differs from that of other families. What struck you the most while photographing these families? The one that struck me the most was a very poor family from Pathum. The girl got pregnant at 17 with no money from her family to support her. Both teens had to give up their education and start work. The guy, who is even younger than I am now, was forced to work at a dangerous oil rig just to make ends meet. The two now have three kids and they live in very bad housing in Rayong. It really struck a chord in me to see the situation they are in.

Prapoj Kumjinda presents his latest collection of nude paintings that capture the natural beauty of the human body. Through Sep 30. Midnice Gallery, Chok Chai Soi 8, 086-282-0282.

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

How have the families reacted to seeing the work? Two out of the three families showed up to the exhibition’s opening event. They seemed very happy and touched that their stories were getting shared to hopefully help raise awareness about the issue. What message do you hope to convey through this photography series? In Thailand, there is a huge stigma around teenage pregnancy. These people are teenagers who simply made one mistake at one moment in their life, but it has left them to be judged as bad people forever. I’m sure no one wants to intentionally get pregnant before they are ready. In my opinion, they are not bad or stupid people—merely teenagers who couldn’t resist their hormones and had a slip in judgement. Society needs to focus less on mistreating them and more on educating young teenagers about contraception and sex education in general. In a country where teen pregnancy is high, what is the role of art in changing social problems? I believe art can offer a different perspective on social issues than what is dared to be discussed verbally. Despite the fact that Thailand has the second highest rate in ASEAN for teenage pregnancy, it is hardly talked about. Perhaps offering a glimpse into the lives of these families, and opening up the chance for empathy, can help urge society to pay more attention to this issue. Interview by Bonnie Sananvatananont
