Blood Orange is coming to Bangkok Gig organizers Have You Heard? have done a fantastic job this year of bringing us top indie names from across the globe, including Of Montreal, The Radio Dept. and Yo La Tengo. Recently announced on their Facebook page is an event titled “??? Live in Bangkok”, with fans quick to point out that the mysterious pink silhouette in the poster is none other than the popular British singer Dev Hynes, aka Blood Orange. He’s an incredibly talented musician who has written for The Machine and Kylie Minogue and his recent performances are also drawing comparisons to Prince and Michael Jackson. While ticket info is yet to be announced, mark Nov 25 as the date to groove out to his new wave, electronic beats. We have serious plans for disabled persons Every four years, Thailand is forced to briefly acknowledge the existence of disabled persons due to their superlative performance at the Paralympics. This year, they’ve gone and broken their own record, clinching six gold, six silver and six bronze medals. (Their abled colleagues clinched two of each.) As a result, General Prayuth said we would improve our sidewalks according the wonderfully vague “Streets to Stars” project. Good, now let’s all forget that idea until 2020 Some of the best uni in Bangkok is actually from the Philippines Shock horror! At places like Crab and Claw, Tables Grill and Freebird, they don’t use uni (sea urchin) from Japan. Instead, they get their stuff from the Philippines. This, we’re told, is no bad thing, since the produce actually takes less time to get here. Compared to the bright orange stuff you might be used to, it has a duller color. That’s because it’s untreated—bite in and you still get that clean, creamy and oceany yumminess. Section 44 can fix Bangkok’s traffic First, Kasikorn Research Center released a study estimating the cost of traffic jams at 11 billion baht a year (or 60 million a day) based on the wealth people would create if they weren’t stuck in traffic. Then General Prawit gave everyone one month to solve Bangkok’s traffics. We can’t wait for November!

Firehouse’s pickles kill it The good ol’ burger institution not only rolls out reliable burgers (with constantly changing specials: try the krapao right now), but also completes the American dream by making great deep-fried pickles. Bite through the crispy beer batter of the FH Original PickleO’s for a hit of flavorful, juicy pickle. Yum!

HOT OR NOT

Hot: Free nibbles

Not: barrel aging

Well, that spread pretty quickly, didn’t it? From Vesper in 2014 to now literally dozens of places in town where you can get a negroni that’s been left to stew in an old wooden barrel, we officially declare barrel-aging not hot (though admittedly still delicious). Now it’s time to get onboard with the next hot cocktail trend: drinks that come with dessert on the side (see Bronx Liquid Parlour, page 18). The sooner this one spreads the better!

INTERVIEW

Hot: British Chinese

Not: Brooklyn Chinese

If you’ve ever had British Chinese food, you’ll know it’s really not something that the rest of the world needs to know about. But if you are British and therefore blessed with a palate numbed to the saccharine violence of sweet and sour chicken balls, we thoroughly recommend you head over to Golden Bowl (see page 16)—this is Chinese food blissfully free from the influence of David Chang and his bao.

Hot: Ogres

Not: Dreadlocks

Greg Knapp

fotofan1

Never mind Marc Jacobs and his dreadlock-wearing runway models. Bangkok’s been suffering its own war about cultural appropriation. Mythical dancing ogres, according to Ladda Tangsupachai, a former director of the Culture Surveillance Bureau, are not for promoting domestic tourism through go-kart rides and selfies (see bit.ly/2cR1z3H). This is the case of a cheesy video made for the TAT depicting Ramayana characters frolicking around the country—a slap in the face for culture, no question, but not for the reasons Ladda is moaning about.

Hot: Bangkok

Not: London

If the news Bangkok now has British-Chinese food (see above) wasn’t already enough to make you never want to visit London again, now hear this: for the first time ever, we just beat England’s capital to becoming the world’s most popular travel destination, according to MasterCard’s yearly survey. Which goes to prove that military dictatorships just work.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Sakdadech Susaweang, 42, is one of the founders of Trash Heroes, a three-year-old volunteer group from Koh Lipe which has made headlines for cleaning up trash from the island and nearby national parks. Following its Southern success, Trash Heroes has now expanded its network to Bangkok, where it hopes to raise awareness about waste management problems in the capital. Why did you bring Trash Heroes to Bangkok? It started with friends of mine who opened a watersports venue in Samut Prakan. They wanted to create a Trash Heroes network in Bangkok. But I’m careful about allowing people to use the Trash Heroes name. If you can be a Trash Hero easily then it loses value. So any team who wants to be called Trash Heroes must run its operation for some time until it creates a proper community which comes out every day. So how’s it going? The first day that Trash Heroes Bangkok went out, two months ago, we attracted more than 200 volunteers who stood on paddle boards and boats to clean up Bang Phli Canal. We cleared 2.5 tons of trash that day! But that was just the beginning. They might come out because of the fun they get with the paddle board but we need to get volunteers to come out every week in the long-term. Now they will gather every Thursday to clean up the Bang Phli area.

After three years of running Trash Heroes, how have things changed? On Lipe and Lanta islands, Trash Heroes has now become a solidly recognized name that people support strongly. We still go out to clean up trash every Monday, but now we’re more focused on spreading our message about how to reduce waste to begin with. We create products from recycled materials, like bags. We also produce aluminum bottles which we sell through our hotel network on the islands and can be refilled for free at local restaurants. Each year we calculate how much water is given to those bottles, and have worked out that we can reduce the number of plastic bottles used on the islands by 300,000. We reach out to youth to tell them to reduce their plastic usage, starting by rejecting bags at 7-Eleven. What do you think is the root cause of all the trash on Thailand’s beaches? People might blame tourists, but in reality, the trash in our sea actually comes from other countries. We spent four months collecting trash on Rawee Island—about 40 tons in total—and most of it came from

other countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh and others. We even found TVs, refrigerators and giant truck tires. So it’s not just tourism. The ugly truth is, we might be familiar with pictures of dead marine mammals like dolphins, whales and sea turtles, but all the fish we eat are actually contaminated. The problem starts in the city, where people still lack a sense of responsibility. And the problem will never go away unless the government makes decisive laws forcing everyone to separate their garbage. So what’s next for Bangkok Trash Heroes? We have been urged to create Bangkok Trash Heroes for so long, but we feel that the city is too big for it to be a success like on an island. So we’ve started doing it by neighborhood. We talk with communities like Bang Kra Chao and Banglamphu to help them form strong Trash Heroes volunteer groups. We plan to clear canals around the Rattanakosin area first. If it’s a success, we may have Trash Heroes of Rattanakosin. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO

RATCHADA

BANGKOK’S NEW CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT

MODERN AND BUSTLING, THE CITY’S NEW HUB HAS A YOUNG ENERGY WE CAN’T RESIST. While much of Bangkok is characterized by narrow winding sois and endless rows of shophouses, Ratchada has always been on another scale altogether. Free from the space constraints of downtown, everything here just feels bigger and more spacious. As such, Ratchada has been able to reinvent itself as a new city within the city, and attracted major corporate headquarters along with a full array of lifestyle options for the ambitious, young office crowd now working and living here. State-of-the-art gyms and trendy cafes, gleaming skyscrapers and active urbanites have transformed this previously overlooked neighborhood into one of the most desirable areas for those new to the property market in Bangkok. With its hyperconnectedness and balance of work and play, Ratchada makes for an ideal homebase.

THE NEW CBD Ratchada recently welcomed some of the country’s most iconic skyscrapers, making it ASEAN’s newest business hub. Among the neighborhood’s rising skyline are impressive projects like the G Land Tower and the upcoming Super Tower, the former being an office building boasting 1.2 million sq meters that looks like something straight out of Tokyo. The latter will reach 615 meters, making it ASEAN’s tallest building. Other contenders are the AIA Capital Center building and EXIM building, futuristic office buildings oozing tangible energy. Unilever has also made Ratchada its home with this gleaming corporate headquarters. In fact, the Stock Exchange of Thailand is moving here, too—a forest of skyscrapers which makes Ratchada officially Bangkok’s Central Business District.

HIGHLY ACTIVE Ratchada is a neighborhood for go-getters, thanks to its young crowd of first-jobbers and ambitious junior executives. You can see it in the entrepreneurial co-working spaces and the many health and fitnessobsessed venues popping up. Asia’s biggest trampoline park—Bounce—is right here, along with Fitfac Muay Thai Academy, a cardio-focused boxing gym. Come lunchtime, healthy menus about in the area’s numerous cafes, such as the farmers’ marketinspired Greenmade Cafe. Recent openings like Phynn Co-Working Space offer a modern and trendy workspace for young entrepreneurs. The minimal decor, strong Wi-Fi and affordable prices mean a guaranteed day of productivity. Many of the office buildings here, being new, are also LEED-certified, so that environmental efficiency isn’t just a buzzword, here.

Visit www.noblehome.com or call us at 02-251-9955

NEVER SLEEP Maintain that work-life balance with a stroll through Ratchada Train Market, a shopping hotspot that sets itself apart with its focus on nightlife, promising cheap yet quality cocktails at bars with plenty of live music. One of our favorites is Speakerbox, which serves rotating craft beers and has hosted live performances from the likes of Degaruda, Stylish Nonsense and more. Hidden in the streets of Ratchada Soi 7, Mustache Bar is where expats and locals merge for a night of danceable techno tunes and affordable cocktails. Not partying tonight? Ratchada is equally equipped for those planning on staying up all night finishing that report. So Asean Cafe is a well-decorated restaurant that opens 24 hours a day, serving only the best dishes from around Asia. Holly’s Cafe, whose coffee is equally as good as its vibe, also stays open round the clock.

GET IN NOW With the Stock Exchange of Thailand and the G Land Super Tower on the horizon, Ratchada’s value as a solid property investment keeps on growing. Noble property is one of the developers that has been instrumental in shaping the neighborhood in its new image. Its skyscrapers’ edgy interiors evokes a kind of monochromatic W Hotel, a perfect fit for the neighborhood’s fresh-faced crowd. With its second development, Noble Revolve Ratchada 2, the developer has proven its commitment to the area as one of the best high-potential neighborhoods in Bangkok right now. The 42-story building boasts all the modern amenities including a particularly large saltwater swimming pool and roof gardens on the 6th and 42nd floors. Located right by MRT Thailand Cultural Centre, its fullyfurnished condos start at B3.9 million. More info at www.noblehome.com. Tel. 02-251-9955

SO AMAZING CHEFS

Returning for the fifth time, So Sofitel’s annual So Amazing Chefs gathers 16 pedigreed chefs from around the world for collaborative dinners this Nov 11-18. The event is led by resident chef Paul Smart, who’s joined by returning chefs including Herve Rodriguez from Masa in Paris and Stephane Bonnat of chocolaterie Bonnat in Voiron, France. New faces include Paul Liebrandt, formerly of the two-Michelin-starred Corton in New York, Thierry Drapeau of Thierry Drapeau Logis de Chabotterie in France, and Jean-Baptiste Natali of Natali in France. On top of seven dinners and two weekend brunches, the week-long event also includes six cooking classes and workshops like cheese tastings.

For one night only, the world's best chefs leave their home kitchens to cook an eight-course dinner some place new. And the secret is the fun part. You’ll pay over B6,000 not knowing who’s cooking for you on the night. But it’s likely to be worth the bet as the listed names include the top culinary ranks: Massimo Bottura of Osteria Francescana (three Michelin stars, #1 in World’s 50 Best Restaurants), Rene Redzepi of Noma in Copenhagen (two Michelin stars, #5 in World’s 50 Best Restaurants), Virgilio Martinez of Central in Peru (#4 in World’s 50 Best Restaurants), Dominique Crenn of Atelier Crenn in San Francisco (two Michelin stars) and Yoshihiro Narisawa of Narisawa in Tokyo (two Michelin stars, #8 in World’s 50 Best Restaurants). Last year, it was Noma’s mastermind cooking in Nahm’s kitchen. And this year, three Bangkok kitchens participate. Place your bet on Bo.lan, Nahm or Gaggan and make a wish. Tickets are on sale already and may go fast.

KANCHANABURI

Good For U

Kanchanaburi’s U Inchantree (034-521-584, goo.gl/YWxEOc) has launched something it’s calling the Deluxe Zone. The new set of 30-sq-meter rooms sees you holed up in a brand-new two-story addition to the hotel, decked out with orange daybeds, yellow walls and black-and-white pictures of the iconic River Kwai Bridge. Right now you can book your room for the discounted rate of B2,999 a night (down from B,439)—still a little above the standard rooms, but then you do get plenty more space with these ones. The hotel itself is in a lovely spot; right by the river, shaded by mature trees and with a cool, black-tile swimming pool.

HOTELS

High Life The X2 hotels group (www.crossto. com) is making it possible to see the whole of Thailand in just seven days— if you have pockets deep enough. It just launched the crazy Adventures Across Thailand with X2 itinerary, which will take you across the country by private jet (the Gulfstream G200) and yacht, all the while staying in X2 properties. Head from Bangkok to Kui Buri, Phuket and Kanchanaburi before heading up north to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Your adventure will end with a trip to Pattaya on a private superyacht which will then take you back to Bangkok. The price: B500,000 per person. Millionaires only need apply.

Southern Tongue Raya might have ruled Phuket cuisine for decades, but now there’s a new contender. Mali (090-324-6351, goo. gl/lz6ZK6) sits a bit out of the old town on Chaofah Road and serves dishes under the tagline “traditional Phuket food.” The new spot has plenty of Sino-Portuguese referencing touches, and space for 10 tables indoors and six on the terrace. The menu charts all the Southern hits—crab meat curry with rice noodle (B300), moo hong (braised pork belly, B150), nam prik goong siab (chili shrimp paste with crispy dried shrimp, B140) and kua kling (stir-fried spicy pork/beef, B160)—as well as experimenting with its own dishes like chicken curry spring rolls (B120) and pla long nam (a hot pot of deep-fried seabass or garupa with coconut curry, B420).

AIRLINES

Route Master Thai Airways (www.thaiairways.com) is really upping its game, having just launched two new routes back to back. Along with now operating flights to Tehran, Iran, they’ve also revived flights to Moscow, Russia, a route which was terminated early last year. Moscow flights start Dec 15 and will cost from B23,045 (till Mar 25, 2017). The Bangkok-Tehran route flies four times per week starting from B15,920. If you want an Iran package deal, they’ll sell you one of those, too, starting from B79,200 and taking in Tehran, Shiraz and Esfahan. goo.gl/eAFlpO

Prim Nurture Retreats also offers salt baths and thermal compresses, as well as waxing services (from B800). Mobile application developer AppSolute (Thailand) rolls out a new app that covers all things nightlife. Shop for your favorite drinks online—from a B100 bottle of beer to a B20,000 bottle of red wine—and get them delivered to your doorstep on Go Get Drink. The wine collection covers a lot of ground, from some neatly priced moscato from B400, along with a cool B4,000 rose from Chateau d’Esclans. Need something stronger? A single-malt Scotch from Glen Scotia (from B2,630) might be just what you’re looking for. Available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Pleated bag maker A Pale Petal joins hands with Issue to create a new special collection, Issue X A Pale Petal. Kaleidoscopic and ethnic, Issue’s bold designs are not an obvious match for the single-color bags from A Pale Petal. The result is that the latter’s signature pleated fabric is here molested with embroidery, beads and tassels. The wildest design has a flash of white on black in the shape of a zig-zag and a colorful bee embroidered on its side. The other three models are resolutely more tame: one all-black, one pink and one in black and white (pictured here). B3,800-4,200. Try Issue, 1/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., Open daily 10am-10pm. On the third floor of a building that also houses the co-working area Good Space and the health spot Seven, you’ll find the brand new yoga studio Rocket Station. The simple square space offers morning and evening classes, with the occasional workshop every few weeks (like Ricardo Martin’s handstand seminar this month). Classes cost B550 if you drop in, but buy in bulk and you can get their starter package of 10 classes for B3,500. You’ll find classes specializing in various parts of the body, and all abilities are welcome. Good Space, 1032/136 Paholyothin Soi 18/1, 094-4980978. Veganerie

Veg Out

With the Jay Festival coming up on Oct 4-14, here are five top tips every Bangkok vegetarian should know.

THERE’S A VEGAN HEAVEN THAT SERVES UP REALLY HEARTY DISHES Veganerie made its name as a vegan dessert cafe, but it now runs a stylish diner dubbed Veganerie Concept, which serves savory dishes that go well beyond salads. Top offerings include zucchini pasta (B250) with tomato sauce and vegan sausage, and the pulled “pork” burger (B290) made with mushrooms instead. Veganerie’s signature desserts are all here, too, like the cashew nut paste-based cheese pies (B140) and waffles (B165) as well as flavorful smoothies (B140-165). 35/1 Soi Methi Niwes (behind Benjasiri Park), 02-258-8489. BTS Phrom Phong. www.fb.com/ VeganBakeryBangkok

YOU CAN EASILY GET YOUR DOSE OF ALMOND MILK AND GRANOLA MerryMild is a delivery service that focuses on homemade health products including almond milk, white kidney bean milk, low sugar juices, natural butter paste granola and other flourless healthy snacks. You can get a set of three bottles of almond milk sent straight to your door for only B90, whether it is the original, dark cocoa or matcha green tea flavors. Otherwise, look out for 137 Degrees, a brand of nut milks available at Tops and MaxValu. www.fb.com/merrymildd.thailand, www.fb.com/137degrees

PORRIDGE IS THE KING OF BREAKFASTS A graduate of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition runs Vara’s, a brand new delivery service dedicated to fresh porridge and muesli bowls made from natural ingredients and packaged in eco-friendly boxes. Take the chance to get a longer lie-in every morning with delicious veggie-friendly porridge flavor combos like coconut matcha or banana coconut, starting from B180. On top of carrot-orange muesli, you can also order gluten-free “paleo” granola. 062-609-7787, www.varasporridge.com

Vara’s

YOU CAN GET VEGETARIAN-FRIENDLY HEALTHY THAI DISHES DELIVERED STRAIGHT TO YOUR DOOR While lunch box delivery services are nothing new, Foxbox is one of the few that offers healthy Asian dishes rather than Western-style food. The menu is at once nutritious and affordable with plenty of vegetarian options, so take your pick from the likes of stir-fried basil mushroom with brown rice (B85), vegetarian pad Thai (B130), and many more. Better yet, the boxes come labeled with levels of calories, carbs, fats and proteins for the dish to guarantee you don’t surpass the day’s calorie count. 919/5 Sukhumvit Soi 49-51, 094-559-0566. www.fb.com/foxboxdiet

Lilou

THERE’S A BRAND NEW VEGETARIAN CAFE IN ARI TO KICK-START YOUR MORNINGS The team behind chic bike cafe Tokyo Bike has unveiled a new health cafe that’s all about delicious vegetarian food. Set in a high-ceilinged shop-house, Lilou Cafe is a cozy, 10seat venue decorated with farmer’s market-style baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables, placed alongside Japanesestyle decor touches. The menu is a seasonally rotating list of brunch dishes including the highlight Avocado Brunch Set (B200), which stars organic avocado alongside mushroom sauce, scrambled eggs, grilled mushrooms, and salad with peanut butter sauce and avocado mayo. The space also holds frequent chef’s tables and cooking workshops for those who want to take their love of vegetarian food to the next level. HEALTH TIP A vegan diet is often associated with heart health, and prevention of lifestyle-related chronic health conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and even some types of cancer. Diets rich in vegetables, fruits and plant-based proteins often contain higher percentages of nutrients such as iron, fiber, magnesium, vitamins C and E, as well as certain phytochemicals. So, even if you’re not vegan all yearround, it can be in your best interest to incorporate more plant-based nutrition into your daily diet.’

Top View Bangkok's latest rooftop restaurant-slash-bar, Attitude, sits on the 26th floor of the new riverside Avani hotel. The big, well-stocked bar stands up front among outdoor tables, offering both classic and refreshing signature drinks like the Moulin Rouge (Absolut raspberry, passion fruit, a touch of grenadine and topped with prosecco, B380). The food menu offers a list of playful Asian-inspired tapas like smoked duck with a fish sauce lacquer and tea gel (B220) and lamb shoulder (B340) in the form of a lollipop. The chefs in the open kitchen also make filling dishes like grilled yellowfin tuna (B750) and Aussie wagyu beef tomahawk steak (B4,950 for 880g). Don’t miss creative desserts like the Xtra Virgin (B260), which features apple in five forms. 26/F, Avani Riverside, 257 Charoennakorn Rd., 02-431-9100

Saeb Lai brings Isaan soul food to Habito Mall. Run by a Vietnam-born Laotian, Thien Duc Dao, and a kitchen team of Thais and Laotians, the restaurant turns out the comforting flavors of good ol’ somtam (from B65), tom saeb (B130) and larb (from B90). The decor blends in Thai elements with contemporary style, like Andy Warhol-inspired pop-art pictures of kratib (sticky rice boxes) mixed with Thai tartan patterns. But there’s nothing fancy about the food here. Highlights are the flavorful grilled chicken (B270 for a whole bird) and 20 varieties of somtam, which sit on the menu alongside other full-on Isaan restaurant offerings. 2/F, Habito, Sukhumvit Soi 77, 02-062-1775

4 NEW NON-DAIRY MILKS YOU NEED TO TRY RIGHT NOW From pistachio to walnut, these nut milks are super healthy and delicious. 1. PISTACHIO MILK ORIGINAL The health factor: With fewer calories and more vitamin K than most nuts, pistachios are sure to become the guilt-free snack of the future. A member of the cashew family, this green nut has been found to help with weight management and digestion according to recent studies. Pistachios also have higher amounts of protein when compared to other nuts, making them better substitutes for dairy milk. The drink: Similar to ordinary almond milk in consistency, but with a light flavor that can easily be identified as pistachio. Even without its green hue it’s almost impossible to miss the obvious flavor of this healthy nut.

3. WALNUT MILK ORIGINAL The health factor: According to some studies, walnuts are believed to reduce unhealthy levels of cholesterol and improve your body’s metabolism. Their anti-inflammatory properties are also helpful for those with sensitive stomachs and indigestion. Sweetened with organic coconut flower nectar instead of cane or processed sugar, this drink remains healthy even though it tastes like a treat. The drink: The walnut taste is completely obvious and results in a roasted flavor that makes the drink decadent and rich. While flavorful on its own, this could also make for a nice addition to your ordinary cup of coffee.

659_Sep30_2016_2.indd 9

2. PISTACHIO MILK WITH DOUBLE BELGIAN CHOCOLATE The health factor: Mixed with dark Belgian chocolate, this pistachio drink is loaded with potassium and makes for a nutritious beverage. The dark chocolate and pistachios are both believed to assist with cardiovascular health making them the perfect pairing for those looking to keep their hearts happy and healthy. The drink: The unmistakable flavor of dark chocolate is the first thing to hit you when you sip on this drink. It tastes like a healthier version of your favorite childhood snack but with less sugar. This is absolutely the drink for chocolate lovers.

4. WALNUT MILK WITH MATCHA GREEN TEA LATTE The health factor: Loaded with healthy fatty acids from walnuts and antioxidants from matcha, this drink is good for both your heart and your mind. Walnuts are also shown to help with stress relief while matcha has relaxing properties without the downside of drowsiness. Certain studies have also shown both of these ingredients have anti-cancer properties. The drink: This drink has a light sweetness that isn’t present in the rest of the lot. The rich matcha flavor shines through the taste of the walnuts. It lives up to its name of being a matcha latte but it’s better for you.

3 REASONS YOU SHOULD START DRINKING NUT MILK

Perfect for those who are lactoseintolerant, nut milk lets you enjoy the things you thought you’d have to give up. Almond milk and cookies, anyone? Unlike soy or dairy milk, nut milks have no added hormones or high levels of estrogen. In fact, nut milks are mostly made up of healthy fats and vitamins. As long as the added sugar is low, nut milks are lower in calories than their dairy counterparts.

STILL THIRSTY?

Almond milk, the more traditional dairy alternative, is also a part of 137 Degrees' lineup of healthy beverages. The original almond milk is lightly sweetened with their signature organic coconut flower nectar, while their unsweetened version showcases the nutty flavor of the almonds. Their coffee latte is made with dark roasted beans and makes for a good low-cal alternative to other grab-n-go caffeine drinks. Drink it fresh or put a new spin on your favorite dishes like tom yum kung or creamy pumpkin soup—it's a great substitute for dairy and coconut milk. Almonds have some of the most extensive health benefits in the nut family. Packed with protein, magnesium and Vitamin E, they can reduce blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure.

Bronx to Bangkok

Thonglor’s craft beer bar with its own street-food stalls out front takes peanuts to a new level, serving them in a very Thai-tasting blend of kaffir lime leaves and dried chilis—all home-cooked on the third floor. Sukhumvit Soi 34, 02-040-0473. BTS Thonglor

The former Vogue Lounge bartender goes it alone with new cocktail bar Bronx Liquid Parlour. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj The buzz: One of a string of new bars opening from some of Bangkok’s top bartenders, this one comes from Hideyuki Saito, who previously manned the (always on-point) drinks at the swanky Vogue Lounge. The decor: Enter through a set of industrial, steel-rimmed glass doors, slide back a rich velvet curtain a la Twin Peaks’ creepiest scenes, and be greeted by a sultry den of high-class cocktail cliches. Think Hanakaruta meets WTF—a booze rack of whiskies stretching up to the ceiling, cool cats smoking and drinking out on the quiet little soi, intimate high tables for gatherings of well-heeled professionals. The drinks: Hide used to head Sathorn’s most fashionable rooftop bar, but the drinks here are far from a replica of what he was doing over at Vogue. The menu is broken into three sections: signature, classics with twists, and house gin and tonic. From the first section, we’re head over heels for his “Sei” (B380)—a deliciously rich blend of Bacardi Ocho, umeshu (plum wine), cacao, port wine, molasses and matcha, with a side treat of housemade rum yokan (Japanese dessert jelly). In fact, every drink here comes with its own little creative nibble

on the side. We also love his butter-washed take on the Sazerac, called The Butter (B400), which sees the classic mix of absinthe, cognac and American whiskey infused with melted butter (don’t worry, all the fat gets removed before pouring to leave just the flavor). On the side you’ll also find a pear financier made with burnt butter and buttered fig. From the classics with twists section, try Hide’s version of a pina colada. Called “The Other Coco” (B360), it features eau de vie (colorless brandy) aged with plum, Thai rum, coconut water, lemon and sugar, with chewy dried pineapple on the side. Note that the only proper food they serve is a munching-meat platter and foie gras pate (both B390), so don’t stumble in here too hungry. The music: New Orleans jazz, funk, soul and blues set the playlist. Why you should care: The cocktails here take detail to another level. Good music and an intimate atmosphere also make this a perfect spot for high-class after-work shenanigans. 8 Thonglor Soi 25, 02 036 6071. Open Tue-Sun 7pm-2am. www.fb.com/BronxBkk

VOGUE LOUNGE Mahanakhon Cube’s rooftop bar serves its chef-made mixed nuts (hazelnut with black sesame, peanut with wasabi, almond with salt, cashew nut with smoked paprika, black and gold raisin) and marinated black and green olives from Greece. SOULBAR The partners behind this Charoenkrung live music bar will proudly tell you the complimentary banana chips are seasonal (go now!) and made by only one local lady who hides away behind the Portuguese church in Talad Noi. By mid-Oct, they’ll welcome a full kitchen serving “soul food” like fried chicken and waffles. 945 Charoenkrung Rd., 093-220-0441

NEW BAR Hair of the Dog Phrom Phong After great success at their first home in Ploen Chit, this asylum-themed bar has opened its second spot in Phrom Phong (inside Villa Market parking lot). It stays true to the original’s dark, mysterious atmosphere like something from a horror film, offering a huge range of craft beers from all over the world across two floors. Beers are available both on tap (rotating) and in bottles. Check out Founders KBS Imperial stout (B580/ bottle), an impressive 11.2-percent strength brew that’s aged in bourbon barrels, as well as BrewDog’s Elvis Juice Grapefruit IPA (B220/bottle). Tuesday is ladies’ night with 50-percent off on all taps for women. 593/27 Soi Villa, Sukhumvit Soi 33/1, 02-258-1461. Open daily 5pm-midnight. BTS Phrom Phong

Thai Spirit Cocktails Five top Sukhumvit bars serving up real Thai cocktails.

Supanniga Eating Room

Baa Ga Din The bar: Aiming to redefine Thai street food, Baa Ga Din serves a menu that’s at once familiar but full of surprises. Alongside superb small plates like the golden, partially deboned chicken wings, you’ll find a fully functioning bar whose cocktails add all sorts of Thai ingredients and twists. The drinks: Served in a mug that resembles a Thai-style woven palm-leaf box, Mekhong Jasmine is a smooth and aromatic mix of Mekhong, jasmine liqueur, rice water syrup and honey, garnished with jasmine flowers. We also recommend the Mekhong Thai Sabai, a fun take on the mojito, which uses Mekhong and Thai sweet basil to spice things up a notch. 26 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-662-3813

The bar: Located right in the heart of Thonglor’s nightlife strip, this petite three-story shop-house serves up some of the best Thai food in town in a cozy setting of earthy tones and vibrant splashes of yellow. Their cocktails also compete with the best in the neighborhood. The drinks: Samui Sangria is a refreshing mix of Mekhong, cinnamon syrup, orange juice and red wine finished with a squeeze of lime. For something fizzy to go with your Thai dish, try Siam Sparkling—lychee floating in a glass of Mekhong and sparkling wine. Another authentic pick-me-up is Mekhong Thai Sabai, which mixes the namesake spirit with fresh lime juice, sugar syrup, Thai sweet basil leaves and a splash of soda. 160/11 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-714-7508

Patara Fine Thai Cuisine The bar: Patara offers artfully presented Thai dishes using quality ingredients, all inside an exquisite mansion just off Thonglor. And the drinks are no after-thought! The drinks: P-19 is a shot combining three different spirits: Kahlua, Baileys Irish Cream and Mekhong, the spirit of Thailand. The sweetness of the Kahlua and Baileys complement the strong yet smooth profile of the Mekhong, making for one powerful drink. Patara also serves another six Mekhong-based cocktails, from Thai Mojito to the wonderfully named Thonglor Punch. 375 Thonglor Soi 19, 02-185-2960

Osito Unique Spanish The bar: Sukhumvit’s trustiest Spanish kitchen may be best known for its paella and line of tasty sandwiches, but the bar gets even more creative with cocktails bearing lots of Thai touches. The drinks: The ‘O’ Whiskey Sour is a fun twist on the classic, comprising Mekhong, lime juice, butter caramel flavored syrup and egg white. Another standout is the Red Sangria, a tall glass made with red wine and Mekhong that’s swimming with plenty of fresh fruit. Prefer sparkling? Order the White Sangria. The bar: This three-level retro hangout sits in the center of Ekkamai, surrounded by big trees and lots of greenery, with an outdoor area where they host barbecues on Sunday afternoons. The drinks: The Mai Pen Rai Julep is a freshly-flavored blend of Mekhong, lime juice, syrup, Thai sweet basil leaves and a splash of soda—the perfect Thai-style cocktail to get your night started. The beautiful wooden bar also serves the likes of Mekhong Old Fashioned, a twist on the classic drink that replaces whiskey with the true Thai spirit. 23 Sukhumvit Soi 61, 02-714-1998

Gaggan Anand’s Meatlicious sees the 2015 and 2016 winner of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants steering away from the delicate and high-tech cuisine of his Langsuan restaurant in favor of a beef-heavy menu cooked using only wood and coal. Tucked down a quiet soi, the cozy house is best enjoyed seated at the kitchen bar, where Gaggan’s pirate crew slice, roast and sear while swapping banter in four different languages. If so prompted, they can just as easily deliver a master class on wet-aging or maintaining ideal oven temperatures when burning wood. That dichotomy—a laidback appearance that hides a lot of substance—applies to the food too. The tomahawk (300B/100g, expect 1.5kg) puts its now ubiquitous competition to shame thanks to a crisp, pepperencrusted char and a heart that is deep red, yet warm, the blood trapped in the meat. After serving, the rotisseur takes the fatty part of the cut back to the kitchen for some extra grilling, so that

Though hidden on the second floor of Mille Malle (a quiet Sukhumvit Soi 20 community mall frequented by expats), Banjoo BBQ aims for a trendier audience than your typical Korean restaurant. Le Cordon Bleu graduate owner Injin “Lauren” Kim doesn’t just serve up Korean barbecue, but also East-meets-West fare that takes influence from her experience at various international restaurants. Passing through the giant wooden door, you enter a gray-hued, lofty dining room dotted with plain, darkwood tables and cooker hoods surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows. In the middle of it all stands a life-size cow sculpture telling customers which part of the animal each cut of meat comes from—handy once you’re confronted with their long beef menu. Alongside the usual rib-eye

Credit card/Debit card payment accepted

(B590/200g) and tongue (B390/100g), you also have some lesser-used cuts like chuck roll (B370/160g) and intercostal muscle (140g, B380), a particularly tasty option thanks to the fat lurking between the ribs. The meat comes all the way from Australia, and unlike other Korean restaurants, they serve their rib-eye whole rather than in slices—it’s juicer that way. The attentive staff are always willing to help with your grilling or replenish the three traditional sauces (we like the fermented soybean paste, which delivers a really well-rounded punch of saltiness). Some of their fusion stuff is better than it sounds, including the white-cream spaghetti with Koreanstyle beef bulgogi (B260): the beef adds real depth to the sauce for a very well-rounded dish. Still, it’s not all fireworks here. The pizza-like kimchi pancakes (B280) came with the smell of stale oil on our last visit, while the kimchi soup was also watery. That doesn’t seem to be putting off the crowds of Koreans and Japanese who drop by for a laidback evening and plenty of Korean-Hite beer (B160) and Korean whiskey (B150-190). You can even get new-world wines and coffee from Ceresia. Overall, Banjoo’s a nice spot for a relaxed barbecue, but unlike older players we can think of (Doorae and Arirang), it can’t quite satisfy all your Korean-food cravings.

every slice is perfect, a level of detail more commonly seen at omakase restaurants. Not every dish is quite as minimal. The “foie gras breakfast” (B450) is a luscious creme brulee where fatty liver replaces the traditional creme. Served with brioche and cherry compote, it straddles comfort food and the kind of challenging, inventive creations you’d find at Gaggan. Similarly, the Meatlicious raw burger (B550) is a sophisticated tartare in disguise. At night, garlic and onions sit in the oven, turning into a charcoal powder that is then sprinkled onto a mix of raw Miyazaki and Angus beef to balance the meat’s fatty, almost creamy texture. These playful recipes don’t represent the bulk of the menu, which is mostly as straightforward as it looks. The spaghetti with spicy meat sauce and porcini wine sauce (B450) isn’t tweaked or deconstructed in any way. Still, it is much more than the sum of its parts, a burst of umami with a rich intensity. Likewise, the jalapeno relleno is “only” a pepper stuffed with ricotta (B270), and yet it tastes amazing. Desserts also make good use of the oven, so that even the freshly baked meringue atop a raspberry, vanilla and strawberry ice-cream bomb (B390) exudes wood-fired notes. The place’s only drawback was that it opened without a wine list. That’s been fixed, leaving us with nothing but praise for Meatlicious’s combination of friendly atmosphere and deceptively simple dishes bursting with flavor.

OPEN DOOR

SNP Headquarter Thai comfort food chain S&P goes retro-hipster in a large, light-filled space. The buzz: The latest opening from grandma favorite S&P sees the chain head in an all-new hipster direction. The vast multi-purpose space (restaurant, espresso bar, bakery, cake studio and workshop) sits on the ground floor of the building that houses S&P’s headquarters, hence the name. The decor: Very open, very bright and very industrial-chic. The minimalist, black-and-white diner vibe is occasionally interrupted by the sort of things hipsters are meant to enjoy, like big shelves lined with jars and sans-serif typography. The separate espresso, bakery and cake studio zones mean you can also grab your freshly-baked pies and bread, while waiting for your grab-and-go coffee. There are some pretty beautiful cakes on display, too. The food: The setting isn’t the only thing given a makeover.

22

While the focus remains mostly Thai comfort food, the ingredients, execution and presentation have been spruced up. Stylish breakfast dishes are served from 7-11am, like kai krata (sunny-side-up eggs on a skillet, B195) topped with stir-fried chicken with holy basi, sauteed pork with garlic and pepper, or quinoa congee with fried minced pork with Chinese olives (B180). Superfoods and microgreens also figure in dishes like rad na (thick noodles in pork gravy) with sunflower greens (B180) and the quinoa salad with grilled salmon (B280). Do try the tasty eggplant fries (B120). The Thai-inspired desserts are a hit, too, namely the soy milk chia pudding parfait (B160) and lod chong (pandan sweet dumpling) with Thai melon and puffed rice, served with finely-grated snow ice (B120). There are also lunch sets (from B165) to suit the office crowds.

The drinks: A large espresso counter stands in the middle of the space serving the usual cups of coffee (from B100) alongside tea and juices. Most exciting are the nitro cold brew taps (B150), which spurt out smooth and creamy coffees. There are also a bunch of fun smoothies and shakes—try the Tub Tab Frozen (milk smoothie topped with Thai-style peanut candy, B150). Why you should care: All the old-school comfort of S&P given a trendy, more photogenic update. Even with the obvious hipster touches, it manages to feel more soulful than your usual branch. While there is space to eat, delivery is recommended (fee starting at B50).

Running through Oct 30, the exhibition dubbed "Northern Land, Southern Seas" will showcase works from the likes of Entang Wiharso (Indonesia), Geraldine Javier (Philippines), Huang Yongping (China), I Nyoman Masriadi (Indonesia), Sopheap Pich (Cambodia), Xia Xing (China), Xie Nanxing (China), Zeng Fanzhi (China), and Zhao Zhao (China). The highlight, however, is arguably two pieces from Chinese contemporary artist and outspoken activist Ai Wei Wei, who was named the "world's most powerful artist" back in 2011 by ArtReview. Some of Thailand's very best will be represented, too, including filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whose retrospective exhibition at Chiang Mai's Maiiam Contemporary Art Museum recently came to a close, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Udomsak Krisanamis. The works of these 14 artists will be gathered in one exhibition that explores Asia's shift away from regionalism. The name of the exhibition is derived from “Southern Seas,” China’s name for Southeast Asia in the Ming and Qing dynasties, reflecting a China-centric view of the world, and “Northern Land,” how Southeast Asian countries viewed China. Known for promoting the development of experimental art across Asia, Tang Contemporary Art is a longstanding institution that started in Beijing in 1997 and also has a branch in Hong Kong. Its Bangkok gallery was previously located at Silom Galleria. 3/F, The Golden Place Plaza, Rajdamri Rd., 02-652-2732. Open Tue-Sat 11am-7pm. BTS Ratchadamri
