A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week Bangkok’s only surf park is set to close This Nov 27, Sukhumvit Soi 26’s urban water park slash live music bar Flow House will close its doors after four years of operations. No more hanging ten on the venue’s FlowRider wave machine while listening to live music from the city’s top rock acts and DJs. The closure is part of a sad trend that’s also seen the likes of Moose, Overground, Hemingway’s and Bangkok Betty shut down in recent months. Guns N’ Roses is happening, for real We were worried there for a moment. After an initial announcement in October that Axl, Slash, Duff and co. would be visiting Bangkok next year, everything went quiet with concert organizers Viji Corp unable to confirm or deny that the concert would take place. Fear not, it’s now official that the gang will be here on Feb 28. Tix are available from B3,500 at Thaiticketmajor. Hua Hin-Pattaya ferry to launch on Jan 1 A privately-run ferry service between the two coastal towns will commence at the start of next year, cutting the travel time from 4+ hours to less than 2 hours. The service, operated by Royal Passenger Liner Co., will initially only offer daily round-trips to a capacity of 150 people. Fare details to follow. Pablo is already yesterday’s news Last week it seemed like all anyone could talk about was Pablo’s arrival at Siam Paragon, but now the name on everyone’s lips is Milch. Taking up its own spot in the same shopping mall, the Japanese-based kase kuchen (cheesecake) shop is already filling up social media with videos of its soft and creamy cakes. The queues are just as long as the cheese tart chain’s, and the other day they completely sold out of their cup-sized treats. The future of fast food is here, and it ain’t pretty

CP just launched a new vending machine selling the same frozen food you get in 7-Eleven but with the addition of a built-in microwave. Photos of the first orange “Foodie” machine at Thammasat University went viral, with social media split on the matter. Some laud the extra convenience, while others question what the spread of such preservative-filled food means for small vendors trying to make an honest living.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Spinning
Not: True Fitness
In a move that will feel all too familiar to those who bought California Wow memberships, True Fitness will slam the door on its CentralWorld branch and all of its members this Nov 30. But that didn’t stop them selling new memberships to people right up until the end of October. If that news makes you angry, go peddle off that rage across the road at new fitness-sensation Tribe, where lycraclad super-humans will beat you into shifting up to 800 calories a session.
INTERVIEW
Hot: International businesses
Not: Your business
Good news everyone! Bangkok’s getting a branch of the New York-born Clinton Street Bakery. Don’t know it? Picture every place we’ve opened ourselves in the past two years—dangly bulbs, exposed red bricks, waffle-based brunches—and you’ll be in the right area. And apparently coffee and baked goods aren’t the only areas where we could do with help from abroad. Kyoto matcha specialist Tsujiri and soap-sensation Lush are also coming over to show us how to do proper green tea milkshakes and soap that looks like food.
Hot: Fall/Winter
Not: Spring/Summer
Chefs across the city are right now ready and waiting with their truffle graters to shave ungodly expensive wisps of fungus over every dish you order. And since this stuff costs something like B30,000 per pound, they’ll happily charge you for the privilege. Other things we’re told you should be eating this season: uni and salmon roe—so basically the cornerstones of any good Thonglor diet. ow.ly/lxgs3064L43
Hot: Nightlife
Not: Staying in
We’d love to be right with you in your outpourings of sympathy for the Overstay, really. Supporting indie venues and urban subcultures is exactly the kind of right-on cause which good liberals like us can get behind. But isn’t smoking pot what your couch is for? So while the rest of Bangkok nightlife reopens and resumes as normal this weekend (see BK Now, page 22), go support those surviving venues doing great music and drinks. They need it.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

S.E.A. Write award writer Prabda Yoon, 43, recently made his directorial debut with Motel Mist, which opened in Bangkok on Nov 17 after touring around film festivals worldwide. Here, he opens up about the reality of Thailand’s independent film scene, the mystery around Thai motels, and the future relevance of Article 112. It has been almost a year since your film debuted at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Why so long to screen in Thailand? International Film Festival Rotterdam needed some world-premiere movies. Then other festivals contacted me to screen with them as well. There are so many steps to getting a movie screened in Thailand, especially money. You have to have budget to rent the cinemas. There is also anxiety about the censorship. Luckily Motel Mist got an 18+ rating here. How challenging are the local censors for you? It’s not as critical as some other countries like Singapore or Indonesia, which are much more restrictive about religion and sex. What frustrates directors and artists here is the unpredictable nature of the censorship board. There are no clear standards. Some movies can make fun of monks but others can’t. It’s all about what the board feels; they follow their own attitudes rather than a set of standards. Many films choose to screen at foreign film festivals before Thailand. Why is this? I can’t speak for everyone but I chose international platforms
because there is no guarantee that I will make money here. Finding funds in Thailand is hard. Sometimes you need to fund projects yourself, and there’s a chance you’ll lose money in renting cinemas for no return. There have been movies that screen in cinemas for three weeks and only get B10,000 back. It’s not worth it. At the same time, international platforms welcome independent filmmakers who are interested in making art rather than mass movies. If their work really stands out, industry insiders will recognize them and bring them credit. Directors can also build revenue and widen their experience at film festivals. Why did you choose to base your directorial debut in a motel? I feel there is something mysterious going on in those spaces. The architecture of motels themselves also really strikes me—these 1970s and 1980s buildings with curtains covering the entrance to each room, which is pretty unique from motels in other countries. The rooms are like boxes stacked next to each other but with different stories going on in each one. Thais ignore them. People who drive past them every day never give them much thought, while those inside don’t want to let anyone know they’re using them. So
there’s a mysterious feeling of isolation around these places. You have been at the center of Article 112 allegations before. How do you feel about the new royal era? I always say that we need to accept the basic human right that people who think differently from others have the same right to exist in society without fear. I don’t ask Thailand to be a Western democracy, but our society hasn’t yet accepted liberal thought. Those who are in power must modernize if we are to reduce conflict. History shows that these people are not that wise and do not care what other people think anyway. It’s possible that the situation will remain as tense and we’ll see more violence. It’s hard to say. We’re in a period where everything is inactive. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan
Motel Mist will screen at SF CentralWorld, House RCA, Bangkok Screening Room in Bangkok, in Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen.

The Out Crowd Where to eat and drink outdoors at Bangkok’s best new alfresco restaurants and bars of the year. By BK Staff
Acres of concrete, plants and steel are devoted to communal courtyards and nightlife venues at this community mall. Perhaps best are the potent cocktails at Evil Man Blues and the warehouse-style clubbing experience at Beam. Also check out the cocktails and house-party atmosphere at UNCLE, the Mexican-inspired tapas of Melbourne-born Touche Hombre, the barbecue fare at Lady Brett and the Chinese buns of Little Bao. On Saturday and Sunday, they all team up for 72 Weekend, a brunch party on the terrace (noon-6pm). 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-392-7999. Open daily 7-2am Above Riva
Above Riva is the latest shop-house boutique hotel in Tha Tien, the neighborhood opposite Wat Arun. Head up to its rooftop—stairs only—and you’ll find an alfresco terrace where practically every table gets prime river views. Dishes add a Thai touch to Western classics, from light bites like deep-fried calamari served with a salted egg yolk and shrimp roe sauce (B325), to a take on osso bucco (braised veal) in massaman curry (B720). 392/25-26 Maharaj Rd., 02-221-1188. Open daily 6am-11.30pm
Attitude
This rooftop restaurant-slash-bar sits on the 26th floor of the new riverside Avani hotel. It's all very sharing- and booze-friendly, which translates to artfully presented tapas plates with the odd nod to Asian flavors. Lamb shoulder arrives in the form of lollipops (B340) and smoked duck lacquered in fish sauce with a tea-flavored gel (B220). Also look out for the premium produce like tsarskaya oysters (B140/piece) and Australian wagyu tomahawk (B4,950). French mixologist Alexandre Hersent rolls out refreshing signature cocktails like the Bora Bora Paradise Island (Absolut pear vodka, curacao, Joseph Cartron banana liqueur, apple juice and coconut ice cream, B380). 26/F, Avani Riverside, 257 Charoen Nakorn Rd., 02-431-9100. Open daily 5:30pm-1am
Freebird
Over at the grill at one of the latest rooftop bars in town, they cook up some amazing local beef from French butcher Arnaud Carre (of Arno's)—one of the most respected food names in town. Char takes up the top two stories of the recently opened Hotel Indigo, with a stylish dining room downstairs and the rooftop bar up above to benefit from those amazing views across Bangkok's "Embassy Row." Steaks start at B650 for 180g of 100-day grain-fed Black Angus. 25-26/F, Hotel Indigo, 81 Wireless Rd., 02-2074999. Open daily 6pm-midnight. BTS Phloen Chit
Italian cuisine courtesy of one of Bangkok's most lauded chefs (Norbert Kostner), a riverside terrace and the Mandarin Oriental's iconic Author's Lounge in the background make this one of the river's easiest spots to recommend. It's more casual than the other restaurants at Bangkok's oldest hotel (though they'll still shoo you away if you turn up in shorts), dishing out Italian staples like wood-fired pizzas (starting B340) and beef stew with polenta cream and gorgonzola (B610). Mandarin Oriental, 48 Charoenkrung Soi 40, Oriental Ave., 02-659-9000. Open daily 6-10:30pm
A huge rotisserie oven imported from France dominates this warm, rusticated restaurant, telling you everything you need to know about Cocotte’s food: simple, on the bone, portioned for sharing and heavy on the meat (don’t miss the massive tomahawk, from B3,750/1.4kg). That’s not to say their vegetable dishes aren’t great too, especially the salad made from up to 15 Northern Thailand-grown vegetables (B360). Sit out on the terrace and you avoid the dining room’s weird red lighting. G/F, 39 Boulevard, Sukhumvit Soi 39, 092-6646777. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm; Sun-Thu 6-10:30pm; Fri-Sat 6-11pm
Char
The year’s most anticipated restaurant hides a few outdoor tables up on its top floor, where a brutalist raw concrete balcony overlooks Sathorn Soi 12. Fresh, simple, well-executed, original yet devoid of gimmicks, there's a reason Bunker’s food has people excited. Some of it verges on tapas portions, but the flavors are anything but small: wagyu tartar spiked with daikon radish (B400); cured foie gras paired with candied cashew and chili mango (B550); smoky wagyu short rib glistening with fat (B2,300 for 2-person). Cocktails from Diageo World Class 2015 finalist Natakorn Changrew complete the package.
Designer Alan Barr’s striking reinvention of a house at the quiet end of Sukhumvit Soi 47 puts the backyard to use with some lively and lounge-y garden furniture. The restaurant brings together freshly brewed coffee, modern Australian cuisine and well-paired cocktails. Try our favorite, the slow-roasted ocean trout with wakame butter, caviar and pennywort (B1,600 for a 900g fillet). 28 Sukhumvit Soi 47, 02-662-4936. Open daily 5:30pm-midnight

The Summer House Project
Set in an 80-year-old colonial-style house, this voodoo-themed bar brings a touch of mystery to Bangkok’s nightlife. On top of live jazz, weekends also see visits from a fortune teller. As well as cocktails named after zodiac signs (B290), they also have 12 different mojito flavors (B290). The outdoor area connects with Mahanaga, a Thai-fusion restaurant from the same owner. 2 Sukhumvit Soi 29, 02-662-3060. Open daily 5:30pm-midnight
This grand old villa reborn as a cocktail lounge and Italian grill restaurant boasts some of Bangkok's most incredible cocktails—head bartender Pailin “Milk” Sajjanit just got named Southeast Asia Bartender of the Year at the 2016 Diageo World Class awards. The adjoining restaurant specializes in charcoal-grilled cuts of seriously premium meat (Spain’s dry-aged rubia gallega is the star of the show at B5,400 per kilo), best enjoyed on a seat from the spacious garden terrace. 1098/2 Rama 4 Rd., 02-286-8833. Open daily 6pm-1am
The Commons
The Missing Burro
The chic terrace at this very upmarket take on a Spanish tapas joint is the place to be spotted with Soi Ruamrudee's in-crowd. A former chef de cuisine at El Bulli had a hand in the menu, which dishes out refined versions of tapas staples like Iberico ham croquettes (B480), grilled octopus tentacles served with beans in Castilian stew (B460), baked fish fillet with potatoes and almonds and the highlight Josper-grilled, Segovian-style suckling pig (B680).
The same owners as Ekkamai live music spot Baan Puen dish out a solid menu of signature cocktails (from B260) as well as food worthy of a full-blown restaurant (our favorite: larb omelet, B145). Ignore the space downstairs and head straight up to the open-air terrace, which hosts live music every evening with a focus on '90s retreads amid checkered floors, dangling greenery and sheets billowing from the ceiling.
Athenee Tower, 63 Wireless Rd., 02-1688100. Open daily 11am-2pm, 5pm-midnight
The renovated house on Soi Goethe sits peacefully in grounds that include a cozy outdoor terrace where you can dine outdoors, lounge on a sofa or play a game of petanque. The chef, Nino Scognamillo, takes La Casa Nostra in a comforting direction with creations like grilled Sardinian pecorino cheese with eucalyptus honey and fresh figs (B180), paprika-spiced roasted octopus on potato veloute (B490), and plenty of pasta dishes. Owing to the partnership with Global Vineyards, their wine menu is a peach. Try the 2011 Chateau Gigault Cuvee Viva (B175/75ml, B280/125ml, B1,400/bottle). 22 Sathorn Soi 1 Yaek 2 (Goethe), 02-287-2402. Open daily 11:30am-midnight
Chef Thanunya “Gai” Kaikaew is the only female chef from the Iron Chef Thailand TV show. Her specialty lies in sweets, so it’s no surprise that desserts star at her restaurant. The lovely wooden house and garden it inhabits wouldn’t be packed out on weekends were it only for vanilla souffles (B220), though. Thanunya also has a solid savory menu with plenty of brunchy nods; and she is backed by impeccable service. La Casa Nostra

Top Knot
Starchitect Duangrit Bunnag followed up Never Ending Summer with this Euro bistro with a vast terrace that leads right up to the water. Comfort food like fisherman’s stew (B240), crab cakes (B350) and beer-battered fish and chips (B550) go down as easily as bar manager Dheeradon Dissara's Thai-infused cocktails. Try the Gold Gold Gold (prosecco, mango puree and gold leaves, B350) and Pina Pamila (Malibu, rum and palm juice, B300). Jam Factory, 41/5 Charoen Nakorn Rd., 02-861-0953. Open daily 11am-11pm
Good food takes center stage at the loft-like, open-plan community mall from the siblings behind Roast cafe. The ambitious project works kind of like a food court, only a really, really good one. Diners can order their favorite dishes from the various food kiosks—fusion burgers from Soul Food 555, Mexican from Barrio Bonito, pies from Holy Moly, to name a few— then dine at the central communal area inside or outside. Don’t forget to check out the cocktails at Track 17 (prices hover around B360). 335 Thonglor Soi 17, 089-152-2677. Open daily 8am-1am
This Mexican spot sits in a garden down the surprisingly peaceful Thonglor Soi 7, far from the bustle of the main drag. And the Mexican owners’ traditional corn tortilla tacos are so good you’ll want to keep the place a secret. The carnitas (braised pork, B280) comes with a mind-blowing sauce made with imported Mexican chilies. Other fillings include al pastor (spiced marinated pork with pineapple, B280) and choriqueso (house-made chorizo mixed with melted cheese, B300). Wash your meal down with a Day of the Dead beer (B220) or margarita (B240). 145 Thonglor Soi 7, 090-913-2131. Open Wed-Sun 5-11pm; Mon 5-11pm
Sitting on top of Hotel Once, this multi-level bar and grill offers 360-degree views from its upper level. You come here for quiet, intimate evenings and small gatherings among friends in an area of the city which is only just waking up to nightlife—but which has the authentic atmosphere of old Bangkok. The food menu however is not so Thai, offering a selection of barbecue specials like pork, chicken, beef, salmon and shrimp as well as pastas. To drink, it's cocktails or local and imported beers. 8-9/F, Hotel Once Bangkok, 2074/99 Charoenkrung Soi 72/2, 02-688-2596. Open daily 6pm-midnight
Alfresco 54th-story views complement fresh, Mediterranean decor that feels anything but stuffy. It's a fitting backdrop for an equally laidback menu of authentic tapas: some 40-odd treats like Joselito ham (B790-1,290), live Boston lobster sashimi (B1,200), oysters (B160190), Cochinillo suckling pig (B1,490, serves 2-4 people) and wild porcini mushroom croquettes (B190). Thirsty? There's a whopping 36 wines by the glass here. 54/F, Centara Grand at CentralWorld, 999/99 Rama 1 Rd., 02-100-6255. Open daily 4pm-1am

CHIANG MAI
Art Capital If you're missing Chiang Mai Design Week (www.chiangmaidesignweek.com) this Dec 3-11, another reason to head north soon is the second annual Galleries Night Chiang Mai (www.fb.com/galleriesnightcm). Taking place on Jan 27-28, the event will see 24 venues across town host special exhibitions, talks and workshops late into the night. On Jan 27 it’s the turn of galleries in the Old Town and eastern side of the city, like Baan Tuek Art Center, while on Jan 28 the party will shift to Nimmanhaemin and Wat Umong roads, home to art strongholds like Gallery Seescape and Baan Khang Wat art village. If you’re looking for a place to stay, check into the art-themed Art Mai Gallery Hotel (www.artmaigalleryhotel.com), which is part of the event. Room rates start B4,717.
Northern Kitchen The luxurious Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai (www.fourseasons.com/ chiangmai) has launched a new cooking school, and it’s an absolute stunner. Designed by Bill Bensley, one the most highly regarded landscape architects in the world, Rim Tai Kitchen features an exquisite, multi-tiered wooden chandelier above a long table. The open kitchen stations boast large mortars and wok stoves where you can try your hand at traditional Lanna dishes, made with lots of Royal Projects produce, in one of the group morning classes (B6,500 per person) or private classes (B8,500 per person). They also have tea and coffee masterclasses, which cover snacks like patongko (Chinese doughnut), kanom dok jok (crispy vanilla dough with sesame) and kanom nam dok mai (coconut and rice pudding). Room rates start at B20,500 for a garden pavilion.
PHUKET
Seaside Sushi Zuma, a global chain of fancy Japanese restaurants, visits Phuket this season for a beachfront pop-up at Anantara Layan Phuket (076-317-200, phuket-layan. anantara.com) on the northwest coast of the island. From Dec 15 until midFeb, members of the Bangkok and Hong Kong Zuma teams will cook up Japanese robata grill dishes like spicy beef tenderloin with sesame, red chili and sweet soy, miso-marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf, and sliced yellowtail with chili relish, ponzu and pickled garlic. Room rates start at B9,988 for a Deluxe Layan Suite, but you don’t need to be a guest at the hotel to eat at Zuma.
MYANMAR
Heritage Updated One of the oldest hotels in Southeast Asia, The Strand Yangon (www.hotelthestrand. com), opens its doors again this November after its first restoration since 1989. Six months in the making, the upgrade remains true to the colonial stalwart’s 1901 origins with the 31 rooms welcoming advanced air-conditioning and in-room technologies. More exciting news comes with Christian Martena, former head chef of Bangkok’s Italian eatery Sensi, taking the helm as executive chef at The Strand Restaurant (open from Dec 1), where he will serve classic Mediterranean fare with local ingredients. Room rates start from US$313 (B10,942) to US$1,030 (B36,008).

Available at Bobbi Brown retailers citywide.

Image resolution is also exceptionally high at 20.1MP with the 24-70mm (equivalent), whose f/1.8 – 2.8 lens lets in plenty of light. Available at all Sony retailers at B38,990.

Mac’s Daddy Lighter, thinner, brighter—the new MacBook Pro delivers everything you’d expect, as well as some game-changing updates. The Touch Bar is a touch-responsive glass strip which replaces the F keys and adapts its function to whichever program you’re working in. The other big change is a much larger touchpad (almost half the size of the screen), as well as P3 colors for the retina screen, a 25-percent wider range of colors than RGB. There is, however, one thing that you’ll either love or hate: it comes with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, and gets rid of almost everything else from USB to HDMI. The new Macbook Pro comes in 13- and 15-inch in either silver or space gray. Prices start at B56,900 (no Touch Bar) and go up to B105,900. Order at www.apple.com.

True Blue These seriously cool fashion brands are reinventing the image of Thai textiles through indigo and other natural dyes. By Earn Saenmuk
SSAP Originally founded a couple years back in New York by Thai designer Mel Sangsomsap, before she relocated to Bangkok, this brand integrates local weaving and dying techniques into versatile streetwear and workwear. SSAP’s special Sakol Project was established especially to promote the natural indigo dying traditions of the Northeastern Sakol Nakorn province. The latest fall/winter collection has caught the attention of international tastemakers like Hypebeast and Highsnobiety for pieces like the patchwork indigo bomber jacket (B8,780) and robe (B6,780). Prices start at around B1,200 for a T-shirt. Available at Cazh (1/F, Siam Discovery), Gin&Milk (3/F, Siam Center), Onion (19/12 Ekamai Soi 12) and through www. ssapnyc.com. W'menswear
Mae Teeta After learning traditional Thai indigo dying techniques from her mother, Praphaiphan Daengchai, a native of Sakol Nakorn province, founded this clothing label back in 1992. More recently a collaboration with leading local design firm Thinkk Studio has resulted in more modern designs for items like dresses, T-shirts and jackets, made from hemp, cotton and denim, as well as accessories like placemats and napkins. Aside from indigo, the brand also derives its colors from locally harvested plants like mango and ebony fruit. Prices start from B800 for the indigo vest and we also dig the indigo hood jacket (B8,500). You can view and purchase the current collection at www.fb.com/Maeteeta.
Seeker x Retriever Originally launched as a pop-up vintage store in Bangkok, this Thai-Australian fashion label specializes in minimalist, gender-neutral designs. The brand’s second collection, This Heat, features garments made from hand-woven and hand-dyed cotton from Lampang province, where the creative director’s mother hails from. Available only in small batches, the versatile shirts, trousers, tunics and dresses come in indigo, natural white and gray (a color derived from local takian tree leaves). The brand’s online store also sells natural skincare products from Isaan startup Nuaynard Handcraft. Available at www.seekerxretriever.com or IG: seekerxretriever— we love the unisex “Poet Shirt”(B2,600) and convertible overall dress (B5,300).

W’menswear Thai-Chinese-Australian fashion blogger Laura Yates, the force behind the internationally-known PonytailJournal.com, recently unveiled this brand which aims to prove cool vintage-style work clothes aren’t only for men. The debut collection combines a World War II military look with Yates’ love of the ocean and fishing. Proudly “made in Thailand,” the pieces mostly feature durable canvas fabric from the locals and are handmade here in Bangkok. Prices start at B4,890 for a navy smock, while a pair of “fisherlady” pants will cost you B5,090. Available at Onion, 19/12 Ekkamai Soi 12, 086388-3303. Open daily 8am-8pm. www.onionbkk.com
Sparks Blue This online shop does everything indigo, and does a really good job. The owner use indigo from Ubon Ratchathani, and started experimenting with tie-dye on totebags before moving on to other designs. The selection includes all kinds of clothing items, from loose tie-dye dresses and comfortable jumpsuits to off-shoulder shirts that give off a beach vibe. Accessories like scarves make great purchases. Available at Sense by SOS (Siam Square Soi 7), on Instagram: Sparksblue and at www.fb.com/sparksblue Sparks Blue

BRUNCH
Early Bird Sukhumvit's biggest restaurant opening of recent months, Freebird, now wakes up early on the weekend for Australian-style brunch. From 11am-3pm, Sat-Sun, chef Dallas Cuddy draws on Melbourne's cafe culture to create deceptively simple, fresh and flavorful dishes. Prime examples are the eggs Benedict spruced up with blue swimmer crab, sea grapes and yuzu hollandaise (B420), and the lox bagel with house-smoked trout, avocado, soft boiled egg, ricotta foam, shallot and dill salad (B330). Some dishes from the dinner menu reappear with different presentation, too. Our pick is the balanced and flavorful roasted corn salad and chili-lime relish, served with a poached egg, furikake (a Japanese seasoning) and toast (B280). There's also a complicated by-the-glass Duval-Leroy Champange deal. Basically, pay B2,100 and it's free-flow for two hours—that's B1,100 cheaper than buying a bottle. 28 Sukhumvit Soi 47, 02-662-4936

Grand Tour
This Nov 25-26, the chef-owner of Tippling Club in Singapore, Ryan Clift, visits Vertigo to present a taste of his much-praised food and booze. Opened in 2008, the restaurant is known for its modern, avant-garde cuisine and innovative cocktails. Not only was Tippling Club named no. 31 in this year's Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, it also placed no. 12 in the inaugural Asia’s 50 Best Bars list. The British-born chef will present signature dishes like charred and smoked peppers, foie gras with apple, walnut and date, and John Dory with roast cauliflower and masala veloute, plus cocktails said to span sweet, sour, dry, bitter, fruity and smoky flavors. The six-course dinner sets you back B4,900 or B7,700 with wine pairing. Banyan Tree, 21/100 Sathorn Rd., 02-679-1200
Rama 4 Road’s Italian grill restaurant Il Fumo opens its beautiful villa for an afternoon workshop devoted to slabs of delicious steak. Taking place this Nov 26 from 3pm onwards, the Carnivore 101 workshop sees the restaurant’s chef-partner Luca Appino leading sessions covering the world’s best artisanal beef producers, beef cuts, and the art and science of grilling. At B1,300, you’ll get to sample Il Fumo’s four prized types of beef—Australian wagyu, French Limousin, Spanish Rubia Gallega and Italian Chianina—and attend a family-style alfresco dinner following the workshop. A session on meat and wine pairing by the house sommelier will set you back an extra B800 net. Limited to 15 seats. Sign up at 02-286-8833 or choti@ilfumo.co. 1098/2 Rama 4 Rd., 02-286-8833
Chef James Sharman’s One Star House Party project sees a team of ex-chefs from Noma in Copenhagen and The Ledbury in London traveling the world to 20 cities in 20 months to organize a one-week pop-up dinner in each place they visit. Their journey started in September, and so far they’ve cooked in Beijing and Ho Chi Minh City. Their next stop: Bangkok. Right now, the chefs are already searching for ingredients somewhere in Thailand to prepare for a series of dinners from Nov 27-Dec 3 at Banyan Tree Bangkok’s outdoor lounge Latitude. Dinner sets you back US$120 (roughly B4,190) and can be booked at bit. ly/2fgu7CB. 21/100 Sathorn Rd. www.onestarhouseparty.com

West Meets West
Bangkok has recently welcomed two delivery services claiming to offer a taste of Westernized Chinese food. Here, we put the American-style Fortune Cookie head-to-head with the British-inspired Golden Bowl. By BK Staff 2 2 6

VERDICT
1
Hot and sour soup
The weird, reddish soup tastes like someone accidentally dropped a jar of pickled bamboo shoots in the pot. It overpowers just about everything in there. (B120)
More like a soupy version of mapo tofu (Spicy Sichuan-style tofu.) Despite a heavy acidity and sourness, some tasters called this mild and comforting. (B120)
Deep-fried rolls
These look and taste pretty similar to Thai-style spring rolls, filled with glass noodles and bits of pork and vegetables, only the layers of pastry are considerably thicker. (B95)
This chunky, oversized roll is greasy and comes with a weird taste from both the egg-covered, tortilla-like shell and stir-fried veggie filling. One bite and we had to put it down. (B70)
Beef chow mein
The thin noodles come overcooked to the point they’re mushy in your mouth. Despite the visible presence of lots and lots of beef, the taste here is simply salty with only the subtlest hint of beansprout. (B170)
2
3
Fried rice
Good ol’ comforting fried rice with nothing but egg and a few peas. A little boring, yes, but it tastes just as it does in the UK, our resident Brit assures us. It does come at a very friendly price, too. (B60)
Kung Pao chicken
This colorful stir-fry comes spiked with chili, making for one sweat-inducing dish. However, the dry, cubed chicken breast won’t appeal to fans of fattier, more tender meat. (B180)
Sweet and sour chicken
Though the dry chicken breast comes hidden inside a doughy batter, this gooey, red-tinted dish is packed with spices and good stir-fry notes. We only wish it weren’t so teeth-shatteringly sweet. (B170)

BK PICK!
We’d love to tell you about the beef chow mein, but something went NO very wrong with our order. Despite the winning noodles—thicker, perVERDICT! fectly cooked—our box came with no beef whatsoever. Checking the receipt, turns out we got the veggie chow mein. D’oh! (B250)
Skip the soup
No contest
Use your noodle; add some meat
This fried rice features traces of Chinese-style roast pork, onion and those three “mixed vegetables” musketeers: corn, carrot and green peas. The flavors are satisfying, but not enough to see it win this round. (B175)
We’ve got no beef with this meat-free option
BK PICK!
This one features more assorted veggies and nuts. Comparatively mellow, nothing really stands out flavor-wise except for the chicken, which is more tender than its competitor—just a shame about that sauce. (B200)
We like our chicken spicy
BK PICK!
In contrast, this is some very, very tender chicken thigh here. But the whole dish is, well, bland, with neither the sweetness nor the sourness we were promised. (B214)
Life is sweeter in the UK
BK PICK!
Overall Verdict: Looking for authentic Chinese? Steer clear of Golden Bowl and Fortune Cookie. Both have their charm, starting with Fortune Cookie’s classic Chinese takeout boxes (the stuff of American sitcom legend). Whether American or British, there’s enough diversity here to have both delivery services on your speed dial for those nights in when you’re craving all things greasy, sweet and spicy.

Beef & Shake HHHH Burgers. 93 Narathiwas Rd., 095-949-2646. Open daily 9:30-12:30am. BTS Chong Nonsi. B-BB
This little burger joint below Chong Nonsi station walks the line between fast-food and gourmet burgers. While there are chopping boards as plates, decorative ferns and craft beers, there are also no-nonsense condiments, branded cardboard containers and not a single mention of wagyu in sight. To taste, the standard cheeseburger (B209/B289 with a soft drink and fries) tells a similar story. The beef is tasty, no doubt. They tout that it’s from Australia and ground fresh daily. The result, grilled to your specification of doneness, is a patty which glistens with tangy meat juice and retains a nicely satisfying coarseness, but no crowd-stopper. Our biggest gripe is its size—the flimsy

Nuevo Latino cuisine was born in M i a m i , w h e re a cc l a i m e d Cu b a n American chef Douglas Rodriguez (“the godfather of Nuevo Latino cuisine”) grew up and learned his culinary skills. In short, the cuisine borrows flavors from Cuba and other Spanish-speaking countries. When Azul opened in June with the aim of introducing Bangkok to t h i s f u s i o n c u i s i n e, we we re immediately taken by its courageous menu of grilled meats, sandwiches, ceviches and empanadas (pastries), but feared it would fly under the radar due to its location (ground floor of a small hotel) and uninspiring, u n n e cess a r i l y f l a s hy d e co r. Fa st forward five months and the restaurant h a s g o n e t h ro u g h s o m e s e r i o u s changes. The low-key folded menu of unfamiliar dishes packed with interesting ingredients has been
thickness of each patty makes doubling up (B80 extra) a must. Same deal with the pork burger (B165 single/B235 double/B255 set), which makes a strong case for itself over the beef thanks to a light, barbecue-y smokiness. Not so with the garlic-marinated and deep-fried Japanese mushroom burger (CK burger, B155), which drips with so much oil it would make any katsu master shudder. They do however get the fries right: a no-frills, hungerbusting portion of perfectly crisp and all-too-moreish potato. Pity that on our last visit they were out of cheese to make them cheesy fries. Ditto the Oreo milkshake. The banoffee milkshake (B145) we opted for instead lacks the flavor of both banana and toffee, but does have plenty of straw-cloggingly dense, creamy appeal (we’re told they use ice cream from Creamery). With good burgers seriously lacking around Chong Nonsi, Beef & Shake has what it takes to satisfy any greasy cravings, and does so in a clean, inviting space free from the stench of an over-worked burger griddle. But with Daniel Thaiger’s truck parking up across the street at Sathorn Square every Wednesday lunchtime, we’d rather wait till then.
replaced by a laminated photobook lined with hotel standards like Caesar s alad, pasta, pizza and burgers. Besides these fillers, there are still dishes that impress. The pumpkin seed-crusted, cream cheese-stuffed jalapeno peppers (B220) are served piping hot in contrast with a cold ranch sauce, resulting in a bite that’s a s a t i s f y i n g m i x o f h o t a n d co l d , creaminess and crispiness. The chef’s fun tweaks remain in the crabmeat empanadas (B180), served with a mango salsa that packs a hint of Thai seafood s auce, or the warm and deeply-flavored stewed duck ropa vieja (B260), served with poached egg on a grilled corn cake. The tender and flavorful braised lamb shank (B480) comes with a side of smooth, mashed t a r o t h a t ’ s a l s o a r e a l w i n n e r. Unfortunately, the Cuban sandwich (B240), a pressed sandwich featuring roast pork, ham, cheese and pickles, retains little of its original charm, let down by overly dry pork and bland flavors. It’s served with tasty, if oily, yuca fries. None of the creative desserts that initially studded the menu remain, so you’ll have to make do with a serviceable chocolate lava cake or creme brulee. All in all, there are enough reasons to give Azul’s Nuevo Latino cuisine a try, but it sadly feels like a restaurant going through an identity crisis.

OPEN DOOR
Wild & Co. An old pre-game favorite returns as a meat-centric bar and restaurant. The buzz: The house that used to be music and booze institution Stu-fe is back in operation again with a wild and meaty theme. Though the concept is new, the owners (some of whom are partners in live music bar Loy Shy) still aim to make it a destination for music lovers. The decor: Amid a lush garden sit two glasshouses, one dedicated to the bar and the other to a proper dining space. The bar takes over the original Stu-fe structure, keeping the exact same floor plan but now embracing lots of plants and stuffed animals to follow the forest-y theme. Attached to it is the kitchen, where you can see the chefs at work through the windows.
20
The food: Dusit Thani College graduate Chatphon Thavornvanit (who’s also behind Munchies for Munchies sausages) heads the kitchen, which focuses mainly on hefty meat dishes, especially game. His rabbit comes bacon-wrapped with kidney, liver and greens dressed with rabbit jus (B690), and sits alongside venison tenderloin, as well as smoked meat which he prepares in a big smoker you can see from the dining room. Try the smoked duck salad (B540) and smoked beef rib (B2,490). Be prepared for large sharing portions like the 1.2kg of tomahawk (B3,290), too. And of course, sausage dishes are also available, like the Munchies bangers and mash (beef and smoked pork sausages with mashed potato, B540) and rabbit sausage (B590).
The drinks: The compact menu lists classics like negroni (B320) and whiskey sour (B320). You can also ask for craft local brews, stocked on a rotating basis. Be warned that there’s a golden bell situated not far from the bar—ring it and the entire house is expected to down a shot. Why you should care: Stu-fe fans, this is your chance to bring back good old memories. And if you like big, meaty flavors, you’re in for a treat. NEW AND NOTED
All Natural August Organic Eatery (The Mercury Ville, Phloen Chit Rd.. 02-252-2423) promises ingredients that are 100-percent organic. Most of the food is decidedly Thai, with dishes like rad na with mushroom and fried tofu (B150) and grilled beef with green curry sauce (B250), but you’ll find the occasional Western dish, too. Try the stuffed salmon with crab meat (B365), served with assorted roasted and steamed veg, rice and bearnaise sauce. Head Over Heels Thai roaster Somersault (Sathupradit Rd., 081-655-6698) has finally opened up its own shop in the heart of Yannawa. Hopping on the Southwestern-modern decor bandwagon—think lots of wood, white-washing and succulents—the small space

Chocolate God Belgium’s 90-year-old luxury chocolate brand Godiva (2/F, CentralWorld, 999/9 Rama 1 Rd.) finally brings its trademark truffles, biscuits and chocolate drinks to Bangkok. But while the rest of the world is currently enjoying the brand’s silky smooth softserve ice cream and chocolate-coated strawberries, we’ll have to wait just a little longer for such treats, which are expected to arrive by the end of the year. The current star of the menu is the “Chocelixir” (B230), a small range of dense chocolate milkshakes topped with whipped cream and yet more chocolate. The place has a definite grab-and-go vibe with only a handful of roundtop tables tucked at the back where you can enjoy Ronnefeldt tea (B245) and coffee (from B120 for an espresso). The prices of truffles vary, but expect around B970 for 100g. Tessa Domzalski

The blue and white sport stadium-themed venue provides a friendly space for all-day casual dining with Western dishes like mac and cheese with ground Angus beef, grilled chicken salad, seared-tuna pasta and burgers. Aside from those pancakes, fans of Muteki’s desserts may also want to order the croissant and butter pudding with an espresso shot and soft serve. Epoch Collection
Khan Kluay
VUUDH
Be Leaf
VUUDH Aromatic Diffuser Star Fruit Why it’s great: Dramatic and sculptural, this vase-like object channels aromatic oils into branch-like reeds. Entirely made of glass, it combines a minimal tube surrounding a star-fruit-shaped vessel at its heart, suspended as if in levitation. Designer: Suchaya Chuchart (Vuudh) Price: B1,400, 1/F, Groove @ CentralWorld, Rama 1 Rd. www.vuudh.com
Khan Kluay Why it’s great: Inspired by how Thai children used to make rifles from banana leaves, this hat stand and coat hanger is made from solid oakwood. We like that the pegs can be folded back, creating a single pole when not in use, a neat feature for tiny spaces. Designer: Chayanin Sakdikul and Nutdanai Siribongkot (Hari Ora) Price: B3,900, www.hariora.com
Cuddle Collection Why it’s great: This dog bed comes with a few tricks of its own. You can adjust its size and shape so that it matches your door, or leave one side open if your pooch is really lazy. The pillows are removable and everything is washable. Designer: Anchana Thongpaitoon (Mha Dog And Living)
Epoch Collection Why it’s great: These handmade ceramic items are available in pastel colors and streamlined shapes with a resolutely contemporary feel. Still, their handmade quality and timeless shapes hark back to ancient times. Available as plates, bowls, a teapot, water bottle and even shampoo and soap dispensers. Designer: Decha Archjananun (Prempracha's Collection) Price: from B250, www.prempracha.com
Lanna Factory Why it’s great: These pendant lamps are woven on a wooden work station that looks like a loom and allows one to pick their desired thread size and color, before the lamp is spun into being under their very eyes. Gimmicks aside, the result is pleasingly organic and colorful. Designer: Decha Archjananun (Thinkk Studio) Price: B4,500, www.fb.com/thinkkstudio
Price: B4,000, www.fb.com/saltandpepper.designstudio
Be Leaf Why it’s great: These ceramic coasters not only look cool on your coffee table, but their leaf pattern actually helps absorb water droplets from your glass. No more getting annoyed at your glass sticking to the coaster—we like.
Cuddle Collection
Designer: Mr. Prakobsuk Yudee (Dhanabadee Art Ceramic) Price: B90, available at Talad Eathai, Central Embassy, Phloen Chit Rd. www.dhanabadee.com
Bugbeat Why it’s great: These stones made of glass waste are like a sponge that absorbs aromatic oils and then slowly diffused them in the air. Conveniently, they are here kept together in a woven bamboo case. Bugbeat also makes its own oils, such as citronella, clove or sweet basil, all of which are known for their mosquito repellent properties. Nature Made Eco Eraser Packaging
ANU Collection
Eco Flooring Deesawat
Go Green
Thai designers unveil products that are stylish and sustainable. Nature Made Eco Eraser Packaging Why it’s great: This fairly minimal eraser is made of scallop shells (100-percent nontoxic and natural). What won it an award is the box in which it is delivered to retailers, which transforms into a product stand and comes with beautifully designed symbols to tout the product’s all-natural cred. Designer: Chanchalad Khanjanawong (Grey Ray) Price: B75, available at any B2S, BeTrend and at www.gray-ray.com
ANU Collection Why it’s great: This lamp pendant is 100-percent natural. But the material used to make this lamp isn’t just reusable or recyclable, it is biodegradable as each piece of the compressed material is put together using pressure and water—no chemicals added. Designer: Anon Pairot (Eqologist) Price: B18,880, available at Anyroom, The Jam Factory. www.eqologist.com
Many Go Round Collection Why it’s great: Inspired by plastic trays used in industrial freezers, which are narrow and stackable, these trays made from woodplastic composites are eco-friendly and versatile. Use them as a serving tray, a storage box and a table—perfect for Bangkok's cramped condos.
Eco Flooring Deesawat Why it’s great: Better known for its outdoor teak furniture, Deesawat has branched out into flooring. By using the byproducts of their furniture factory, such as wood and aluminum, they’ve created tiles with alluring mosaic patterns. All the wood waste comes from tropical hardwoods like teakwood and rosewood, making the eco board highly durable even in tropical weather.
ROOM CONCEPT STORE This is one of Bangkok's longest-standing multi-label stores for local home decor (though they stock international brands, too). The recently reopened Siam Discovery branch reveals a fresh look and greater variety of products, especially from Thai designers. Highlights are mostly mediumto small-size furniture and chic decorative knick-knacks. 3/F, Siam Discovery, Rama1 Rd. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Siam
Designer: Jirachai Tangkijngamwong (Deesawat Design) Price: from B1,500 per sq meter, available at Deesawat showroom, 11 Sukhumvit Soi 24, 02-204-0547. www.deesawat.com
Husk Collection Why it’s great: Also under a waste recycling theme, these cork-colored tiles are made of discarded rice husks, a byproduct of polishing rice. Lightweight, thin and durable, they have a tiny carbon footprint and come in muted earth tones and various mosaic styles. Designer: Duangporn Ruangsaeng (Sonite Innovative Surfaces) Price: from B3,000 per sq meter, Sonite at Crystal Design Center. www.sonitesurface. com
“The core of design is sustainability. We aim to better our lives, so if we want it to stay that way, being eco-friendly is key. All of us realize that we have an environmental problem, but not everyone acts on it. Using materials like wood-plastic composite we knew would be good for the environment. No one was using it but we did.” —Kanin Chuenmeechow, designer at Many Go Round
ANYROOM Owned by local starchitect Duangrit Bunnag, this trendy furniture and design store finds its home in the leafy grounds of a riverside compound that also consists of restaurants, a bookshop, a gallery and a cafe. The furniture follows a minimal, sleek style using natural materials including old wood and stone, carved into one-of-akind pieces that range from sofas to chandeliers to candleholders. The Jam Factory, 41/4 Charoen Nakorn Rd., 02-861-0955. Open daily 11am-8pm

Clothing and accessories that make the world a better place.
Fingerjoint
Holder Folder Cutting Mat #A4
The Barcode: T&T Metal Comb
Why it’s great: Created by a group of architect turned-designers, this clutch bag is made from the rubber cutting mats you’ll see in every architecture studio. The natural rubber is not only strong enough to resist a box cutter, but it is also waterproof, UV-resistant and non-toxic.
Why it’s great: Each comb is produced to represent a barcode of your birth date. Not only does it make each comb unique, but the irregular teeth will make your impeccably parted hair look a little less stiff. Plus, it’s metal and will probably outlast you.
Designer: Teerapol Akaratiwa and Warunya Nuntasunti (Least Studio) Price: B1,490, www.leaststudio.com Changeable Color T-shirt
Designer: Ittidej Lirapirom (The Sleeveless Garden) The Barcode: T&T Metal Comb
Price: B4,300, available at Chatuchak Weekend Market, Section 4, Soi 47/1, Room 018. www.thesleevelessgarden.com
Envelope Clutch Why it’s great: These clutch bags don’t just look metallic from flaked-painted or foil-covered textile. Instead they are woven from copper and stainless steel threads, giving them a deep shimmer—beautiful and durable. Designer: Jarupatcha Achavasmit
Envelope Clutch
Surf 2 (By Sign of Siam)
Price: B900, www.toughandtumble.com
Surf 2 (By Sign of Siam)
Fingerjoint Why it’s great: This elegant black, vegetable-tanned leather tote bag is made without any stitching or glue. Instead the straps are held on by a traditional Thai binding method while the bag’s bottom is held in place using a technique taken from wood joinery. Added benefit: the strap can be removed and comes in three sizes.
Holder Folder #A4
Designer: Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen (Tough & Tumble)
Price: B7,500, Siam Discovery. www.craftedskin.com
Why it’s great: These clutches are inspired by traditional Thai basket weaving techniques but the gradient, tie-dye color scheme, which represents waves hitting the shore, gives the hand-woven sea pandanus a contemporary feel. Sea pandanus is cheap, durable, lightweight and doesn’t get moldy. Designer: Sarinee Klinsuwan (Sign of Siam) Price: B355, www.fb.com/signofsiam
Changeable Color T-shirt (Don't Let Me Cry, Bear Love Sunshine) Why it’s great: These T-shirts printed with the face of a crying polar bear will guilt-trip all your friends as the bears tears become more apparent the colder it gets. Want to keep the bear happy? Turn down that air-con and stop global warming. Designer: Yanakan Hlongsawas (Abearable) www.abearable.com Price: B790, www.abearable.com
COOL PACKAGING
ERB NATURAL BAR SOAP
MINNAMAME
BOONBOON LITTLE BULB
The soap (B360) comes in a paper box with a pattern that mixes motifs from the King Rama V era and modern art. The paper is thick, smooth and adorned with gold emblems—a very beautiful, luxurious package.
The name derives from the words minna (everyone in Japanese) and edamame (Japanese soybean). Not only does the package mix Thai and Japanese identities, but it can be frozen and microwaved, so that your beans can go from freezer to plate effortlessly.
Because natural coconut oil solidifies at temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius, this bottle is a solution to using the oil in colder countries. It’s squeezable and has two openings so you can squeeze it out or open it up and scoop out the oil when it’s cold.

Industrial Era
Although it looks like paper, it most certainly isn’t. The material is called natural cellulose fiber, which is water-resistant, tear-proof and lightweight, and it is strong enough to hold your things safely. The notebook is put together with just folds and thread, so it is recyclable and biodegradable.
Furniture that's chic yet practical. Raya
Easy Wing
Why it’s great: Made of solid wood like walnut, ash and teak, this bench takes its name for the Thai word for distance. That’s because its unique design tapers at its ends, allowing friends to huddle in the middle, or strangers to sit at each end.
Why it’s great: This black steel and oakwood coffee table is inspired by a dragonfly’s wing. The craftsmanship, in particular the ironwork, is stunning. Use them as end tables or get two to form a complete dragonfly.

Why it’s great: The chair’s structure is made of galvanized steel, an industrial material used outdoors for its highly durable nature. This chair should last 50 years even in outdoor conditions, but its rough industrial look will look right at home in your exposed-brick interior, too.
Why it’s great: The collection of wooden tableware is made in Northern Thailand and its design evokes the traditional striped furoshiki bags in Japan. The items even come in their own cotton bag, a nice packaging touch. Designer: Anchana Thongpaitoon (Salt and Pepper) Price: B360, O.D.S., 3/F, Siam Discovery
Feather Why it’s great: The Addams Family would approve of these Gothic sidetables where an intricate steel mesh in the shape of black wings supports the tabletop.

“To me, good design is about achieving the intended objective. Some designs meet our needs in terms of usage, making them easy and convenient, while some designs are just meant to look different—with unique shapes that stand out from other things. Both of these design approaches are valid depending on the context.” —Apiwat Chitapanya, designer of Feather and Easy Wing
