A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week That the BRT will continue to operate, but at an extra cost for commuters The BMA has backtracked on its threat to cut the beleaguered bus service due to annual losses of B200 million and instead will raise its flat fares from B5 to B15. That’s sure to please the 25,000 daily commuters who use the 16km service between Sathorn and Ratchapruek roads. Negotiations on just who will manage the BRT are still ongoing, though. That there’s a massive new burger in town Hawaii-hailing chain Teddy’s Bigger Burger (Gateway Ekamai and Central Pinklao) is currently laying down an almighty challenge: if you and a buddy can put away a 40oz (1.13kg) burger in under 13 minutes, the meal is free and you get a B1,000 voucher. Fail and you’ll be charged B990 for beef and B920 for pork. The fastest duo also stand to win B20,000 in cash. Until Apr 30. www.fb.com/ teddysburgersth That 80/20 is teaming up with some big names for a new bar The Charoenkrung restaurant that claimed #15 in Top Tables 2017 for its modern take on Thai cuisine is back at it again. Set to open right next door by June is Tropic City, a collaboration with Sebastian De La Cruz and Philip Stefanescu (both formerly of Sapporot Group) that will be rum-heavy but not exclusively so. Better yet, 80/20 are prepping a new menu especially for the place. See Bangkok’s other best new bars on page 22. That one of Bangkok’s first bar-slash-galleries is turning 7 From Apr 28-30, WTF Bar and Gallery will be hosting the three-day What the Festival 2017 under the foreboding theme of “Never Never Land.” Artists like Sakarin Krueon and BK ’s own Kathy MacLeod will present their visions of dystopia, joined by poetry reading, a series of film screenings (Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, anyone?) and, of course, a block party on the final day. Bangkok wrote the book on ice-cool, heat-busting food trends long before Seobinggo rolled into town. And it’s once again that time of year when everyone’s favorite, overly elaborate aristocratic dish from the past turns up on menus. If you’ve not had the pleasure of steamed rice in ice-cold jasmine-scented water, you simply must. See page 24.

News of new Bangkok bars has been pouring in so thickly that barely an hour goes by when we don’t hear about some amazing new secret Oahuthemed cocktail laboratory that just popped up. So forgive us if you know anywhere which didn’t make this week’s list of the best openings of 2017 so far. We had to say stop at some point. See page 22.

That library we posted about which was being built in the Old Town: it actually opened. Did you really think Bangkok’s greatest downtown night market was cleared seven years ago to make way for a crappy Chang-branded theme park? Of course you didn’t. Those puny rollercoasters were just space saving while the Bangkok real-estate behemoth that is TCC Group got around to the real announcement of One Bangkok, a mixed-use development which sounds basically the same as the one Central and Dusit are building across the road—hotels, condos, retail and leisure facilities, you know the drill.

INTERVIEW Thida Plitpholkarnpim, 45, founded the Documentary Club in 2014 through the crowdsourcing platform Taejai.com, and since has grown it into a 130,000-strong community of independent film enthusiasts. Now, the club is set to take over two new homes in Bangkok’s upcoming creative spaces of Chang Chui and Warehouse 30, where they plan to host regular screenings. Here, Thida discusses problems with documentary distribution in Thailand, and how they will survive in the era of movie streaming. Currently, the movies which Documentary Club screens have very limited cinema access. Has the audience grown since your efforts began? It’s still something that we have to deal with after three years. We’re fortunate that SF provides us with space. Cinema operators have to look at it from a macro angle. They see that no matter whether you’re screening indie movies or documentary movies, you won’t make that much money, so why do you need more theaters or showtimes? After a week, if no one is coming to watch the movie, then they will reduce showtimes to once a day or once a week. But we look from the micro angle. If a movie isn’t given the chance to create hype and draw people in for longer than a week, then how can it be expected to make money? So we always have to negotiate with each movie from one week to another. We always have to look for new spaces where we can find a different audience, both in Bangkok and other provinces. It could be cafes, bookshops, universities, co-working spaces and even hospitals.
How will your upcoming spaces in Bangkok’s two new creative projects affect our approach to distribution? We’re still thinking about it. As we have been invited to join Chang Chui and Warehouse 30, we can view these spaces as a home for documentary movies which everyone should have the chance to see. We plan to experiment with various events related to movies, as well as to offer plenty of diversity. There might be talks or themed movie nights. We’re still working on ideas. How has the proliferation of movie streaming affected the importance of independent movie distributors? We agree that video on demand [VOD] fits well with people’s lives, while conventional channels like cinemas actually limit choices. So cinemas are only for people who prefer to view films that way; they are not an absolute answer to distribution, but they are still very valuable. That’s why we also embrace streaming. We just began a TVOD [transactional VOD] project with Maxxxstore, based on a payper-view system. We need to work
on the concept and see which movies best fit the cinema, and which can go directly to streaming. We are X [a documentary about a Japanese rock band] needed to be screened in the cinema because the experience is so visual. Do you think Documentary Club has impacted the size of Thailand’s audience for documentary films? We haven’t created this audience. They’ve always been here, they just haven’t had a voice. The Thai audience is painted as only demanding easy-to-watch entertainment, but that’s completely untrue. Documentary movies aren’t just growing in Thailand. Social media has expanded everyone’s global view of the world. We acknowledge events like the war in Syria, so while it might fall from the headlines of mainstream media, documentaries such as Return to Homs, which dares to go inside some of the most dangerous areas of Syria, offer something new to knowledge-hungry audiences. Water Wars Canceled on Khao San Bangkok’s backpacker mecca will not be joining in the full-on water fighting this Songkran (Apr 13-15). With the party strip in such close proximity to the Grand Palace, authorities are urging revelers in the area to toe a conservative line as a show of continued mourning for HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej, meaning no “entertainment activities,” use of powder and water guns, or scanty attire. Only traditional water sprinkling and merit-making will be permitted, along with a Buddha image procession. The entire length of this backpacker haven usually turns into an all-day water-fight zone for the duration of the festival, packed with huge crowds of teenagers and international backpackers. The cancelation of Songkran festivities on Khao San Road leaves Silom Road and RCA as the main party zones for this year's wet and wild celebrations.
Thailand still remains in mourning for HM King Bhumibhol Adulyadej. Therefore, parties have been recommended to tone themselves down and people are asked to keep this in mind.

Sustainability Drive Six ways to save Earth and cut costs during your business events With the launch of the UN’s 17 S u sta i n a b le D eve lo p m e n t G o a l s (SDGs), it has become increasingly crucial for companies to put sustainability at the forefront of all their events. Whether it’s a large-scale international exhibition or a regional conference for your company, here are some top tips to ensure your event ticks off the key sustainability boxes.
The Thailand Sustainable Events Guide
PAPER

ORGANIC
PLAN AHEAD
REDUCE WASTE
KEEP IT LOCAL
One of the first steps in organizing a sustainable event is to make an action plan covering the key implementation points and targets to be met. Better yet, event organizers should keep a full report of post-event results, in order to target key weaknesses and set new goals for upcoming events.
Simply providing separate bins for various forms of waste (paper/plastic/ organic) can make a big difference in recycling and waste management. With food being the top waste creator in the MICE industry, special attention should also be paid to managing food portions, while any organic waste should be separated for composting.
Increase the social benefits of your event by sourcing locally, whether it’s hiring local staff, using local SMEs for services like catering and cleaning, or providing locally grown food on the menu. This way, your event will help to give back to the local community, providing support for a sustainable cycle.
The Thailand Sustainable Events Guide by TCEB is a follow-up to the organization's Green Meetings Guideline: Advancing the Future of MICE from 2012, which sourced tips from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). It consists of six sections of innovative sustainability strategies

for the MICE industry, based on the self-sufficiency philosophy of HM King Bhumibhol Adulyadej, in a determined effort to encourage Thailand’s MICE industry to go
GO ONLINE
VENUE MATTERS
SPREAD THE WORD
Reduce paper use by sharing documents online, as well as using computerized registration systems and digital billing forms. Not only does this save paper, but it makes the process quick and convenient in the growing online world.
Start off by choosing venues that have been certified with a recognized sustainable building management system (BREEM, LEED, ISO 14001, EMAS, BS8901 or equivalent). On top of that, venues that provide easy public transport access can help reduce car use in the area.
Creating a sustainability-forward mindset among staff and participants is already one step in driving its success. A "sustainable participant" guide, gentle reminders in pamphlets and announcements, and useful signage can help everyone keep the sustainability goals in mind.

KANCHANABURI
River Life
Kwai Tara Riverside Villas (214 Moo 6 Wangkrajae, Sai Yok, 093-925-8883, www. kwaitara.com) is Kanchanaburi's latest floating paradise. Still in its soft opening, the hotel comprises 20 modern loft-style villas along the River Kwai, located only a short drive from Erawan Waterfall. Rates currently start at B4,000/night. While the Canal Access Villas give you beautiful views of the mountains, we love the spacious 80-meter Floating Villas, which bob over the water complete with their own stylish hammocks, river terrace and upper deck. It doesn't have to be just down-time, though—jungle rafting, elephant riding and kayaking are all on offer, while free rafts leave the resort at 4:30pm everyday if you fancy a tour down Kwai Noi River. There's an on-site Thai restaurant and spa too.
HONG KONG
Drinks with a View Claiming to be the world’s first observation deck cafe, Cafe 100 by The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong has got to have some of the best views in the city. Located at sky100 Hong Kong Observation deck, on the 100th floor of Hong Kong’s tallest building, the cafe comes with a panoramic view of the city skyline and Victoria Harbour. An airy, Parisian-style design with floor-to-ceiling windows is the setting for delicious, treats like sweet and savory French crepes or soft-serve ice cream in seasonal flavors like sakura (for spring) and roasted sweet potato (for winter). We recommend buying a dining package (HK$250/B1,110), which gets you access to the observation deck, along with your choice of savory or sweet crepe, waffle, panini or poffertjies and a drink, saving you about 20 percent on the standard price. There are only 40 seats available, though, so reserve a table in advance at cafe100@ritzcarlton.com. For somewhere to stay, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is running a three-nights-for-the-price-of-two package till Apr 23, 2017. You’ll be saving over B17,000. Book now at bit.ly/2ojpsBQ.
Manufacturing Past Once the manufacturing factory of the Camel vacuum flask brand, The Camlux Hotel (15 Wang Kwang Rd., Kowloon Bay, www.camluxhotel.com) is the first hotel to open in Kowloon Bay, a former industrial district on the east side of Kowloon that's being revitalized as a commercial and residential quarter. Behind the seemingly plain exterior, the six-story hotel incorporates markers from the past in its 185 contemporary guest rooms decorated with vintage houseware products of the old factory. The retro-modern lobby also plays around with materials like brass, copper, stainless steel, glass and colored plastics that were formerly used in the manufacture of vacuum flasks. Don't worry about the slightly out-there location as the hotel is only a few minutes' walk from Kowloon Bay MTR station and also offers a complimentary shuttle bus service to the main shopping districts like Mongkok, Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui. Book now for special soft opening rates from B3,300 (that's a 50% discount on regular prices), available for online bookings through Aug 31.

Situated right beside East Coast Park, mere steps from the beach, it also comes with a large lawn and private pool. The city center and Changi Airport are close by, but more exciting is the nearby presence of Joo Chiat, a colorful Peranankan neighborhood.

The Parisian shoemaker Roger Vivier is pleasing Thai fans with a new collection of limited-edition pieces exclusive to the Emporium boutique. Details like the two-tone square buckle emblem, silver heels (your choice of two or three inches) and Nappa leather in new shades of navy blue, beige, gold and silver all mark these out from Vivier’s other perfectly proportioned creations. Yes, they cost B30,000, but you won’t find them anywhere else in the world. G/F, The Emporium, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-664-8442. BTS Phrom Phong
The whitewashed space formerly belonging to sneaker shopslash-restaurant Knock Thonglor has been taken over by another group of street-fashion addicts. New multi-brand retailer Uncon packs in over 30 fashion names, among them cult local brands like Sneaka Villa, Missile and 9Face as well as Italian leather bag purveyors Solar Milano from Italy. As before, the highlight has to be the sneakers, which sit in a devoted corner: expect special series from Adidas like the Y-3 Lazelle (B7,000) and the highly-sought-after NMD in monochrome white (B9,000), all the way up to the Yeezy Boost 750 (B49,000). San Francisco’s acclaimed men’s hairstyling brand Hanz de Fuko is finally available in Bangkok. Repped by everyone from David Beckham to Bruno Mars, these pomades, shampoos, conditioners, waxes and gels are all apparently 100-percent organic. Top-sellers including the Scheme Cream, a hair cream which offers a lighweight texture and hold, and the more versatile Claymation, a wax-clay hybrid that they say can lock in any style, from rockabilly quiff to bedhead. Beckham supposedly owes his perfectly tamed mane to Quicksand, a powder-clay formula that offers extra volume and high hold with just the right matte finish. All products come in at the same price: B990 (60ml for clays, pastes and creams; 237ml for shampoos and conditioners). Pursuit, M/F, Siam Discovery, Rama 1 Rd., BTS National Stadium/Siam

Elysees Handbag
Candy colors, authentic leather, fine stitching. Elysees’ bags take their inspiration from the glamorous Avenue des Champ-Elysees in Paris, where beautiful handbags are ubiquitous. Taking inspiration from Parisian chic, the brand’s designers created Elysees bags in many shapes,
from a simple flap handbag to the cross-body—mostly made from Saffiano leather. Our pick is their pink flap bag from the Parisian collection (now half price at B3,990). www.fb.com/elyseeshandbag

RESTAURANT
Gaggan 2.0 The shop-house opposite Gaggan is now Gaa, where chef Gaggan Anand invests in the talents of his former sous-chef, Garima Arora. The Thai-Indian chef and her team champion ingredients found on the coastal region between Thailand and India, which they serve exclusively in tasting menus (B1,800 for eight courses/B2,400 for 12 courses). Modern techniques meet traditional cooking methods in a sandwich of translucent dehydrated cabbage with roasted bell pepper paste, while the kitchen’s devotion to made-from-scratch produce is showcased in the house-made split-pea miso in which they marinate the grilled pork ribs. Simpler-looking items pack no less flavor, like the grilled seasoned baby corn husks with corn milk dip. The plate of Indian-inspired petit fours on which the meal ends is a real highlight. 68/4 Soi Lang Sua. www.fb.com/gaabangkok

Sicilian Connection
Turkish Delights
Hidden Gem
Following the departure of chef Luca Cesarini, Sicilian chef Gaetano Palumbo has taken over as executive chef at Sheraton Grande. He also takes care of its Italian restaurant Rossini's, and has just launched a new menu. While still focusing on classic flavors, Palumbo plays around with more modern techniques and presentation in dishes like rosemary-smoked salmon, served in a smoking dome with parmesan cream, baby onions and onion powder (B680), and wagyu beef tartare with a liquid nitrogen-frozen burrata cheese dome and truffle (B650). Old fans can still enjoy Rossini’s signature dishes like seared Hokkaido scallops with green apple and sweet pea coulis (B750) and mushroom risotto (B630). Three-course set menus start at B1,350 while four-courses cost from B1,600. 1/F, Sheraton Grande, 250 Sukhumvit Rd., 02-6498364. BTS Asok
The Dining Room has launched its first revamped menu after placing no. 36 on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants. With this new ninecourse tasting menu (B3,800), chef Fatih Tutak retains the nods to his Turkish roots (and what for us have always been two of the restaurant's star dishes): the eggplant dumpling inspired by his mom’s home-cooked manti (Turkish dumplings), and the olive oil-marinated tomato with ezine cheese, pomegranate jelly and parsley granita. Other courses see evolution of previous dishes. His latest version of “Tsukiji Market” now uses kampachi (almaco jack) instead of tuna, paired with avocado puree, fresh wasabi and plum sauce, all served on a shiso leaf. Tutak is a name you should stay tuned to, he's also working on a new Turkish food project. The House on Sathorn, 108 Sathorn Rd., 02-344-4025. BTS Chong Nonsi
Hidden far from sight in the Old Town, Ku Bar carries an alluring air of mystery. A dusty concrete staircase leads the way to a marble counter amid a decrepit room where Anupas "Kong" Premanuwat, who worked as a mixologist at New York's acclaimed Angel's Share speakeasy (home to the current Bacardi Legacy global champion, Gn Chan), pours a monthly rotating cocktail menu (starting at B350) that spotlights local ingredients plucked from the fresh market. Kong shows off Japanese-like attention to detail in the "10 Herb" (B360), which mixes jub liang herbal tea with gin, honey, egg white, lime and burnt sugar. Thanks to Kong’s wine-loving wife, Elaine Sun, they also have some standout “orange wine” (white wine made using the same method as red wine) like Matias Michelini "Via Revolucionaria" Torrentes (B370/glass, B1,750/bottle) from Argentina. 3/F, 469 Prasumen Rd., 02-067-6731

3 Bears
Cru Champagne
Following in the footsteps of Golden Coins Taproom, 3 Bears is the latest Thai craft beer brand to open its own bar. This space ticks all the beer bar cliches (from dangling bulbs to raw concrete) and only pours beers from the namesake brewery, all priced at B240: Goldilocks Blonde, Hunter’s IPA, Gorilla Stout, Jackal Pale Ale and Summer Snow Champagne Ale. You’ll also find tapas like crab cakes (B140) and nachos (B140). 1154 Sukhumvit Soi 22, 095-456-8298. Open Mon-Fri 4pm-midnight; Sat-Sun 11am-midnight
From the hotel’s 59th floor, where you get full 360-degree views over Bangkok, this bar specializes in G.H. Mumm Champagne (from B5,400 for a bottle of G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge Brut) as well as fruity and flamboyant cocktails perfect for sunset hour. Pull up a cool, pebble-shaped sofa and enjoy drinks with over-the-top presentation like The Swallow’s Nest (B488), a shocking-pink glass of Absolut Elyx vodka, Cointreau and five fruit juices. Also be sure to order the kurobuta pork belly steamed buns with Korean chili paste (B285).
Ba Hao
59/F, Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld, 999/99 Rama 1 Rd., 02-100-1234. Open daily 5pm-1am
Bangkok’s current fetish for Chinese-themed bars reaches its zenith at this latest spot for the Soi Nana neighborhood. Neon Chinese letters signs and a do-nothing approach to shop-house restoration give it the requisite look of old Hong Kong cool, complete with open frontage that spills onto the Yoawarat streets. The place is super new so no words on pricing just yet, but they look set to offer a pretty sharp selection of craft beers, along with Chinese bar snacks like dumplings. With Pijiu (see below) and Foojohn also both now open for business, the second coming of Chinatown bars is in full swing. 8 Soi Nana, Maitri Chit Rd., 081-454-4959. Open TueSun 6pm-midnight
Brewski This beer bar sits 30 stories above the center of Sukhumvit. But just as good as the views are the drink prices, starting at just B70. Brewski feels kind of like going to the rooftop of your condo for a beer. Kick back on the big, lounge-y sofas with an ice-cold La Chouffe (B280/pint, B100/100ml), a Belgian blond beer that despite the eight-percent ABV tastes smooth, easy to drink and fruity. 30/F, Radisson Blu Plaza, 486 Sukhumvit Soi 27, 02-302-3333. Open daily 5pm-1am
Dim Dim This candlelit, Chinese-themed cocktail bar exudes oriental cool through vintage tea boxes and rows of waving lucky cats. Bartenders whip up drinks with Chinese twists like the Oolong Tea & Orange Sour (B280), a twist on the whiskey sour made with oolong tea and orange peel-infused Wild Turkey 81 bourbon. Just as exciting is the house-infused chrysanthemum vodka—try it in a shot (B280). Hungry? There are crispy Chinese pork platters and Hong Kongstyle congee. 27/1 Sukhumvit Soi 33, 02-085-2788. Open Mon-Sat 6:30pm-1:30am
Duke Bangkok’s latest whiskey and cigar lounge is also a serious art gallery. Tucked away in the fittingly swanky Gaysorn shopping center, Duke from the Water Library group welcomes you with a variety of colorful contemporary Thai art pieces before you reach the beautiful, dark wooden bar. The huge list of whiskey charts all the big Scottish and Japanese must-try labels, and even such delicacies as Michel Couvreur’s Clearach French single malt (B690/shot; B8,600/bottle). Smokers will
find cigars from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and other prominent producers, with prices starting from B280. 1/F, Gaysorn Village, 999 Phloen Chit Rd., 080-5879520. Open daily 11am-midnight
Golden Coins Following the closure of much-loved beer bar Let the Boy Die, one of its founders, Pipatnapon “Piek” Pumpo, is back with a new project. The six-tap craft beer bar exclusively serves strains of Piek’s own Golden Coins beer, priced at B180 per glass or B100 during 5-7pm happy hours. The food comes from The Commons’ barbecue specialist Meat and Bones spotlighting flavorful pork (B360) and beef ribs (B550). Ekamai Mall, Ekkamai Soi 10, 082-675-9673. Open daily 5pm-midnight
Pijiu Bar Following the closure of much-loved beer bar Let the Boy Die, one of its founders, Pipatnapon “Piek” Pumpo, is back with a new project. The six-tap craft beer bar exclusively serves strains of Piek’s own Golden Coins beer, priced at B180 per glass or B100 during 5-7pm happy hours. The food comes from The Commons’ barbecue specialist Meat and Bones spotlighting flavorful pork (B360) and beef ribs (B550). Ekamai Mall, Ekkamai Soi 10, 082-675-9673. Open daily 5pm-midnight

Weiz Guy Hefeweizen is some of the best pricing in town, while the fridge features new local names like Happy New Beer (from B220). Drinking snacks are in the works—think Chinese cold cut platters, Sichuan chicken knuckles and perhaps even some dried goat meat. 16 Soi Nana, Charoenkrung Rd. Open Tue-Sun 5pm-midnight
Sky on 20 This 26th-floor rooftop bar offers laidback garden vibes and views of both Sirikit Lake and Benjasiri Park. The fruity but not-too-sweet cocktails come courtesy of Portuguese bar manager Joao Dos Santos and start from as cheap as B250, while to eat you have tapas like spicy Spanish chorizo with squid (B340) and pizzas (from B430). It’s not as flashy as most Sukhumvit rooftop bars, but that makes it a relaxed place for cheap drinks and actual conversation among friends. 26/F, Novotel Bangkok Hotel, 19/9 Sukhumvit Soi 20, 02-009-4999. Open daily 5pm-2am
Vanilla Sky Rooftop Decked out with LED lights, Vanilla Sky gives off a fancy sky bar atmosphere, but still remains easy-going. Gin and tonics take a starring role in the cocktail menu, all priced at B320 and with some unusual flavors the mix (think peppermint and passionfruit or chestnut and chamomile). Some stuff to keep in mind: they don’t do proper food, only light bar snacks like salted beans, nuts, popcorn and Dorito chips, while a lack of elevator directly to the roof means clambering up a long flight of stairs from the 35th floor. 35/F, Compass SkyView Hotel 12, Sukhumvit Soi 24, 02-011-1111. Open daily 5pm-2am
All dark woods, vintage signage and spare lighting, this Chinatown beer bar swings to the sounds of upbeat piano jazz while pouring craft beers courtesy of Beervana. B260-290 for 500ml doses of stuff like Los Locos Mexican lager and Tuatara

What’s Khao Chae?
KHAO CHAE MAE SIRI
A set of khao chae features rice soaked in cold, flower-scented water with a few delicate side dishes. Usually consumed in summer, this royal Thai specialty requires great attention to detail: preparing the rice to a just-cooked level and rinsing the additional starch out before soaking it in flower and candle-scented cold water. Traditional side dishes include look kapi (shrimp paste balls), caramelized salted daikon radish, stuffed shallots, pork or beef floss, sweet seasoned fish meat and stuffed green chili wrapped in egg net. Carved vegetables also accompany the set.
Banglamphu’s khao chae specialist offers the refreshing rice set all year long at a very humble B30. Serving khao chae since Rama 5 era, Mae Siri strictly sticks to the traditional recipes. The sweet-sauteed spotted eagle ray, for example, takes eight hours to make. 360/20 Trok Krai Si, Sumen Rd., 02-281-7996

Arno’s Burgers and BeersHHHH Burgers. Narathiwas Soi 15, 02- 087-5087. Open daily 11am-10pm BB
You should know the Arno’s story by now. Arnaud Carre’s butcher-slasheatery opened at the end of 2015 sparking a weeks-long waiting list for its dry-aged local beef grilled up in a boisterous setting not unlike a Ladprao beer pub. That was followed in Dec 2016 by this oh-so-tiny venture all about burgers. Set on the corner of Narathiwas Soi 18/1, not too far from the office mecca of Chong Nonsi, the cube-like brick building is a no-frills diner set-up with both counter and table seating. From an open kitchen a half-dozen staff buzz about taking orders and flipping patties. Here, you’ll find the same beef used at the butcher shop ground fresh daily. Stuffed inside a house-made fluffy bun, the patty of the classic American-style burger (200g/B220, 300g/B330 or double/ B390) comes juicy at rare or medium rare and topped with either sharp American or blue cheese. Misho
HHHH
Japanese. Glasshouse at Sindhorn, 130 Wireless Rd., 02-253- 9552. Open daily 11am-11pm. BTS Phloen Chit. BB-BBB F
Comfortably the most popular restaurant in Wireless Road’s Glasshouse complex, Misho draws in business even when Starbucks is empty. Given that it dishes out sushi deals the likes of which would normally only be found during a Soi Thaniya lunch hour, we can see why. Want a perfectly crisp katsu cutlet atop rice? That’ll be B220 (minus 10% at lunch time), complete with a proper miso soup swimming with thick lumps of fatty salmon. Spend B380 on a nigiri set here and you’ll get six pieces of fish so generously cut you’d think the Japanese chefs who man the kitchen were trying to get rid of the stuff (not to mention the omelet, maki, soup, dashi custard and salad that also come with). It’s a similar story with the
genuinely good produce, these are some straight-up solid burgers you’d be loath to leave off a list of Bangkok’s best. Better yet, those prices also include your choice of mixed salad, French fries or curly fries (you’re a fool not to plump for the latter—just look at all the tables around you!). There are other proteins like pork, portobello mushroom and chicken teriyaki, as well as more “creative” specialties like “The French” (B350), where the patty is mixed with steak tartare ingredients. The Philadelphia cheesesteak (B220), however, is a dry and disappointing mix of sliced beef with only the slightest smear of blue cheese and scattering of confit onion. You can also sample some steak from Arno’s Eatery here, just don’t expect the same selection. At B400 for a 200g strip loin and B450 a tenderloin, you can’t really fault this beef except for perhaps a slight lack of seasoning. This only highlights Arno’s secret weapon, a trio of flavor-packed sauces: pepper, jim jaew and a Thousand Islands-indebted offering. With great beef, the burger quality here isn’t in doubt. But it’s the other half of Arno’s name we take issue with: beer—or the lack of it. Our last couple of visits were met with a fridge of soft drinks (despite Duvell and Verdett signs plastered everywhere) and a suggestion to BYOB. That may put a dent in your Friday night plans, but there are still some nice lunch deals to be had (from B220 for a burger, side and soft drink).
sashimi. Order the standard take plate (B700) for tuna, salmon, hamachi (flatfish) and hirame (flounder), each cut into two gloriously thick steak-like chunks, along with a duo of sweet red prawns and scallops. Freshness is never in doubt , whether with the sweetly mouth-coating prawns or decadently slippery yellowfin. No wonder the Tripadvisor mantra for this place seems to be “reasonable prices.” We did the math on some of their sake—B280 for a carafe of Born Junmai 55 Fukui means you’re basically paying retail. To go with it you have a setting that’s upscale and relaxed in an offthe-shelf modern-Japanese-chic kind of way, plus a clientele who look wise to t h e p r i ces — yo u ’ l l b e f i g ht i n g salarymen for the kitchen counter bar stools. You don’t get much atmosphere. Alright , you don’t really get any atmosphere. To that end, it’s to Saladaeng Soi 1’s nearby Touka which we’d turn for some properly raucous, Izakaya-style action. (As well as smoky yakitori that gives Misho’s humdrum grilled chicken a kicking). But if what your evening demands is good-quality, ample fish, a couple of drinks (Asahi B90/bottle) and change from a grand, then come here. Misho more than meets those simple expectations.

OPEN DOOR
Sri Trat
A beautiful house devoted to rare Eastern Thai cuisine.
The buzz: This restaurant specializes in one of the lesser-known regions of Thai cuisine: the eastern provinces, especially Trat, where the owner’s family comes from. That means Bangkok foodies are already drawing comparisons with Supanniga, one of the city’s most reliable Thai kitchens. The decor: Aiming to contemporize a countryside house, the wood-heavy restaurant has a luxurious edge (those richly azure, button-backed leather sofas), but still remains casual and down-atheel. Moody, marine-washed walls and louvered wooden panels meet with pop-art murals of the owner’s beauty-queen mother and King Rama 9. Out the back you have a grocery store selling Trat products.
The food: The fish sauce, salted fish, sun-dried squid, chamuang leaves and shrimp paste all come from Trat province. Here you’ll find the Eastern staple of moo chamuang (stewed pork belly with chamuang leaves, B220) and crab roe chili dip (B250), as well as creative takes on the cuisine, like a chili dip version of moo chamuang (B220) in which the pork belly is replaced with minced pork. Beautiful seafood also features in dishes like the barracuda spicy salad (B220), which is made like a lime ceviche and served with peanut-brittle dressing and lon pu kai (B540), a creamy chili dip with whole mud crab and coconut milk, served with fresh vegetables. The desserts menu is filled with very regional treats, rare and unfamiliar in Bangkok, including the soft brown sugar crepe with mung beans and coconut filling (B100).
The drinks: Chennarong “Jan” Bhumichitr, the senior brand ambassador at Diageo Moet Hennessy (Thailand), and Paradee “Bell” Sahathanasomboon, previously of Vesper, ensure that cocktails live up to the regional integrity of the food. The purple-tinged Salacca Fizz (B360) features the pungent, sour taste of salak (aka snake fruit), along with butterfly pea-infused gin, while The Garden (B340) is a mix of Pimm’s No. 1 Cup, lychee liqueur, lime juice, elderflower and rambutan syrup. Bursting with freshness, the results are a full-on and aromatic experience. Why you should care: For a cuisine that’s not very easy to find in Bangkok, Sri Trat does a beautiful job spreading it to our plates, in a friendly and stylish way. TABLE TALK
Thyme NEW AND NOTED
Melon Mellow The compact Melon Story cafe (G/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd. bit.ly/2ofn8yZ. BTS Siam) presents drinks and desserts that revolve around Japanese melon. On top of the now-ubiquitous melon bingsu (shaved ice, B180 or in the fruit, B239) and soft serve, available in melon yogurt and charcoal milk melon flavors (B140), they also have melon juice (B140), cold-pressed a la minute when you order. There are also some watermelon offerings, including cold-pressed juice (B99) and bingsu (B140).
Flakey Cakes Kouign Amann Bangkok (www.fb.com/kouignamannbkk) specializes in the namesake French pastry. Hailing from Brittany, France, kouign-amann features puff pastry, layered with butter and sugar, and baked in a ring like a cake. Causing an online stir among in-the-know foodies, this online delivery shop makes its pastry with French butter, French flour and unbleached caster sugar, which results in the flakey texture and pleasantly buttery
aroma. Available in three flavors: plain (B70), chocolate sea salt (B85) and lemon cheese cake (B85). Orders can be made online via their Line account (@kouignamannbkk).
Out of Towner Hailing from Hong Kong, Townhouse (G/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 02-129-4559. BTS Siam) presents Asian fusion cuisine in a contemporary setting. Architect Hugh Zimmern contributes to the stylish interior here, headlined by a big neon sign, continuous mustard-colored sofa and colorful plates. Inspired by various Asian cuisines, the menu spans Hong Kong egg waffles with Serrano ham (B140), Singaporean-style stir-fried noodles with lobster meat, Serrano ham and foie gras (B580) and robata-grilled pork neck with sambal sauce (B90). Also try cocktails like the Golden Triangle (curry leaf-infused rum, peach liqueur, apricot brandy and ginger foam, B350) and Welcome to Town (chamomile-infused gin, triple sec, vanilla syrup, lemon, grapefruit and orange juice, B350). More ambitious items on the menu include wagyu beef carpaccio (B550) and rack of lamb (B9001,500). Don’t miss dipping the crispy churros (B220) in the accompanying dark chocolate and dulce de leche. Sugar Ray
Newly opened craft beer bar Golden Coins Taproom (Ekamai Mall, Ekkamai Soi 10, 082-675-9673) is just the place to kickstart an Ekkamai bar crawl owing to daily happy hours from 5-7pm, where all beers are just B100/glass. Following the closure of the Old Town's much-loved beer bar Let the Boy Die, one of its founders, Pipatnapon “Piek” Pumpo, returns with this new project taking its name from his own brewery, launched in 2011. The six-tap craft beer bar exclusively serves strains of Golden Coins beer, priced at B180 per glass (except for the pilsner, with 4.7% ABV, that’s only B150). Enjoy it all with pork or beef ribs (B360/B550) courtesy of The Commons' barbecue specialist Meat and Bones. While you're in the neighborhood, consider stopping by these other recent arrivals and old classics on Sukhumvit Soi 63 (Soi Ekkamai) and slightly beyond. Situated in the same community mall as Golden Coins, Malt & Salt (G/F, Ekamai Mall, Ekkamai Soi 10, 02-714-4249) is a Scotch whiskey bar that’s not just limited to enthusiasts. Best-sellers include the Glenfiddich 12 year old (B280/35ml glass) and the owner-recommended Ardbeg 10 year old (B250). For the uninitiated there are several tasting flights to try, like Value for Money (Monkey Shoulder, Black Label, Gentleman Jack, Chivas 12 year old, B790). Heading further down Ekkamai Soi 10, you'll find another craft beer bar, Mikkeller (26 Ekkamai Soi 10), hidden away from the hubbub of the main drag. Set in a modern-meets-rustic house, this is the first ever bar in Asia from the Danish "gypsy" microbrewer and you're guaranteed to find some unique brews on tap while enjoying the lush garden. (Visit on Thu-Fri and you might want to book for Upstairs at Mikkeller, the second-floor restaurant that offers a 10-course tasting menu of "progressive American" cuisine paired with beers from downstairs.) Heading deeper down Soi Ekkamai, Sugar Ray (Ekkamai Soi 21, 094417-9898) has returned, offering a secluded speakeasy-like vibe and quality cocktails from the same people behind Asoke's Q&A (#26 is last year's Asia's 50 Best Bars list). Expect all the classics but with twists in ingredients and techniques, whether it's infused syrups or handcrafted ice-balls. Back towards Sukhumvit Road you'll find Orihara Shoten (18 Park Lane Sukhumvit Soi 63, 02-382-0131), Bangkok's newest sake bar. Part bottle shop, part izakaya, this is a collaboration between Japanese sake exporters Orihara and local booze distributors BB&B, so you can rest assured you're getting the good stuff. The 100-plus-bottle selection of both chilled and hot sake starts from as little as B180 per glass. You can get some sustenance from the adjoining Tori Tama, a Tokyo-hailing yakitori restaurant run by the same people. For your final stop for the night, drop by The Owl Society Whiskey Saloon (Sukhumvit Soi 61, 02-046-3798), a hidden whiskey bar on Sukhumvit Soi 61. Over 100 bottles from all over the world are on offered, categorized by country and region. Behind the bar you'll find Suchada “Fahbeer” Sopajaree, one of 12 finalists for Diageo World Class Thailand Competition 2016, who whips up vintage classics as well as ever-changing signature drinks. Still thirsty? Try beers with an awesome soundtrack at Happy Monday, the breezy rooftop at Baan Puen, the massive cocktails and retro decor at Tuba or the EDM and club vibes at Do Not Disturb.
